Espoir de Vie

    Augustine

Augustine Sycamore

Partner: Sandre

A 32-years old man living in Lumiose City and the main protagonist. He suddenly woke up in front of the Lumiose Station where he learned that he was trapped here and was forced to play the Reapers’ Game.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Augustine ends up in Neku's shoes as he found himself trapped in the Reapers' Game with no way out of Lumiose City and witnessing several people like him erased from existence by the Noise. It didn't make any better when he learned that he already died by the time the story started.
  • Ascended Extra: Being the author’s favorite character, Augustine is the main focus of Espoir de Vie.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Normally a laidback, good-natured guy. But he will lose it if anyone tries to mess with him. That includes keeping secrets from him.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Augustine's Color Motif thanks to his shirt and is in contrast to Sandre's red.
  • Death by Adaptation: Augustine mysteriously died prior to the story, which became one of the main mysteries of it.
  • Elemental Powers: His Psychs relies mostly on elemental manipulation.
    • Playing with Fire: Lets him manipulate fire through his Pyrokinesis pin. Unlike Sandre however, he can manipulate them into whatever he likes with the said pin like a makeshift thruster.
    • Shock and Awe: Lets him fire several bolts of electricity through his Thunderbolt pin.
    • Making a Splash: Allows him to fire water projectiles through a new pin Sandre gave him.
    • Dishing Out Dirt: Allows him to create earthquakes with the Earthshake pin that Kazuki gave him.
  • Friend to All Children: This is one of the few traits Augustine still retains even after he woke up in the Reapers' Game. Heck, his first instinct when seeing Hayate and Kazuki for the first time being surrounded by Noise is to save them. He also befriends them after the mission.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Seemingly averts this, but it turns out to Played Straight when he learns he did lose some memories when he was a Pokemon Professor.
  • Nice Guy: Like in the canon, Augustine still remains as the nicest guy in the Pokemon world as he risks his life to save a bunch of kids from the Noise.
  • Rage Breaking Point: He finally reaches this point in Day 3 after he feels that he's Locked Out of the Loop from Sandre and being relegated to listening to his orders rather than making one himself. Unfortunately, this attracts some Noise onto him along with his suspicions that he's Lysandre, the Team Flare leader. It even made worse after his suspicions were true, which he succumbs to the Noise's influence and followed on Dezz's mission to erase Lysandre.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Does this twice once he's finally had enough of Sandre's secrecy in Day 3.
  • Superpower Lottery: Played with. Like Neku, Augustine is able to use more than 2 pins. However, he can only use element-based pins as he wasn’t able to use Psychokinesis and Shockwave. He can also use some non-elemental ones along with the Psychs that the Player Pin gave him.
  • Trick Bullet: Can summon energy bullets and control the trajectory and quantity of them. While it’s not an elemental Psych, it allows him to let them take form of several elemental projectiles based on the pins he used.
  • The Watson: Because of how he jumped into the game without any knowledge of its rules and mechanics, he acts this trope as he asks questions about them to Sandre.

    Sandre (Unmarked Spoilers)

Sandre/Lysandre

Partner: Augustine

A mysterious man and the first player Augustine met. He made a pact with him to save him from the Noise. He seems to knows everything about the Reapers' Game than everyone else and is willing to teach his partner to help him survive against the missions and Noise thrown against them.

His true identity is Lysandre Flueri, a former leader of Team Flare who played the Reapers' Game for three weeks.

  • Big Damn Heroes: He first appears by saving Augustine from the Noise before forging a Pact with him.
  • Color Motif: Red, which contrasts Augustine's blue.
  • Ex-Big Bad: He was formerly the leader of Team Flare and the former Big Bad of Pokemon Xand Y.
  • Experienced Protagonist: As revealed in Day 4, his experiences from playing the Game for 3 weeks have made him aware of how the UG and the Reapers' Game work.
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: As part of his Fusion attack with Augustine, Sandre summons fireballs while Augustine summons water balls for them to throw to the Noise.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Seemingly does this to Augustine by delaying his answers about his personal life and disallowing him to enter the laboratory on Day 3. Unfortunately, this affects their teamwork and Augustine's trust after he begins to suspect that he's partnered with a genocidal terrorist.
  • Mr. Exposition: He acts as a mentor to Augustine due to his lack of knowledge of the game.
  • Mysterious Stranger: He initially appears in a hood and a face mask before he revealed his face and name to Augustine.
  • Playing with Fire: Sandre's main Psych.
  • The Reveal: He's actually Lysandre, former leader of Team Flare.
  • The Stoic: He remains aloof for the most part. Yet, he does show a bit of vulnerability on some occasions.

    Kazuki

Kazuki

Partner: Hayate

An 11-years-old player participating in the game alongside his partner, Hayate.

  • Alternate Self: He's this to Kazuki from Artificial Fantasy, an original story from the same author.
  • Cheerful Child: Despite their current situation, Kazuki remains excitable and is willing to enjoy some of the local delicacies of Lumiose City during their free time.
  • Fire Ball: His main Psych, though it seemed to be outclassed by Augustine and Sandre's Pyrokinesis as it was a bit slower despite he has better control and accuracy at it.

A player Augustine and Sandre met.

  • Aloof Ally: Unlike his partner, he's not interested in making friends with other players. However, he is willing to work with them to clear missions.

  • Mind over Matter: His main Psych.
  • The Stoic: He's mostly focused more on the missions and prefers to finish them as soon as possible.

    Leo

Partner: Ronald

A player Augustine and Sandre met. A former firefighter, he befriended Hayate and Kazuki during Day 1 and forged a small alliance between their pacts.

Reapers

    In General
A mysterious group of beings who run the Reapers' Game.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: As with most Reapers, they possess black, featherless, and angular wings.
  • In the Hood: The low-ranked Reapers mostly wear hoodie jackets and served as guards to a wall as they give out small tasks to players to let them through.
  • Musical Theme Naming: Most of the Reapers are named after musical terminology while the Reaper Officers are named after music genres.

    Motif

Motif

Rank: Harrier

One of the first two Reapers Augustine meets. While he prefers sketching more than anything, he is no slouch when it comes to his job. He partners with Allegro.

  • Musical Theme Naming: "Motif" is a short succession of notes producing a single impression. In visual arts, it also means an element of an image, befitting Motif's habit of sketching.
  • Tranquil Fury: He may be quiet and aloof, but there are times that his aloofness will break if something pisses him off.

    Allegro

Allegro

Rank: Harrier

One of the first two Reapers Augustine meets. A total opposite to his partner, Allegro often grabs any opportunity to erase players just to get ahead of their competition. However, he is more laid-back than the introverted Motif.

  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even if he loves erasing Players, he finds Dezz's manipulations against Augustine and Sandre appalling.
  • Musical Theme Naming: "Allegro" is a type of tempo that indicates playing fast, quickly, and bright. It is also an Italian word for "cheerful", befitting his cheerful attitude that hides his love of erasing players.

    Vivace

Vivace Announce

Rank: Unknown

A young mysterious Reaper who hosts "Montre Reaper: Jeu", a web show currently airing in the RNS that gives out updates of the Reapers' Game and announces new features for the app itself.

    Dezz

Desmond "Dezz" Soniet

Rank: Harrier

A mysterious Reaper. It seems he likes to mess with players like Augustine and Sandre with his Noises and twisted games.

  • For the Evulz: He manipulates Augustine into killing Sandre/ Lysandre just to "spice things up".
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Suffice to say that neither Motif and Allegro like him thanks to a Noodle Incident that they were involved in a week prior to the story.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Loves to play with the Players like puppets to satisfy his enjoyment.
  • Musical Theme Naming: His whole name is can be pronounced as "dissonance", which is a lack of harmony among musical notes. This represents well with his reputation within his peers and how he sows chaos by lying and psychological manipulation.

Realground (RG)

    Cadenza

Cadenza Abre

A fashion designer and the owner of the fashion brand, Lotus Rouge. Unknown to the public, she has an uncanny ability to see the UG, which she uses it to enforce the rules of Reapers' Game. She seems to have a connection to Sandre.

  • Brutal Honesty: She does not filter her words when it comes to her criticisms. Even Augustine and Sandre are not safe from her What the Hell, Hero? speech after the events of Day 3.
  • Classy Cane: Carries a cane with an X-shaped handle, which she often uses to smack others (especially on Sandre's head) to their senses.
  • Establishing Character Moment: She spends her first appearance chastising Augustine for succumbing to his desires to bring himself back to life thanks to Dezz's manipulations and Sandre for hiding everything from his partner despite her insistence on the opposite.
  • Shout-Out: Cadenza is the proprietor of a fashion brand called Lotus Rouge.
