     The Original Trio

Callum

  • Ambiguously Related: There is circumstantial evidence to suggest that Callum might – might – be descended from Aaravos. Aaravos himself isn’t entirely sure, but it’s enough to motivate him to try and get Callum on his side, rather than kill him.

  • Chick Magnet: Chapter twenty reveals that Callum has apparently become this at seventeen, catching the eyes of many young women (and Ellis) in the village. Fortunately, the girls respect his relationship with Rayla and don’t seem eager to break the couple up. Claudia has also developed an attraction to him as well, and she’s not so nice about it.

  • IncorruptiblePurePureness: When warned of how easily achmages are corrupted under their own power, Callum, and everyone around him, seems to assume he is this and it’ll be fine. Averted around his third arcanum in which he starts to lose his temper more frequently.

  • Wrath: After his third arcanum, Callum is shown getting angry more often. This is implied to be linked to the dangers of being an archmage.

  • Uneven Hybrid: Possibly, but nothing is confirmed. It is revealed that human mages such as Callum might have existed once, but they were so rare, they were thought to have elven ancestry. Aaravos has also insinuated that Callum is his own descendant, via his half-elf son Aarush. If this is true, it would make Callum only mostly human with a sliver of Startouch elf blood in him.

Ezran

  • Abdicate the Throne: When Katolis is destroyed, he takes the opportunity to abolish the monarchy altogether, opting instead to create a village with a council that no longer involves him.

  • Big Brother Worship: Ezran was king for a little over a year, and he says that whenever he doubted his abilities, he’d remind himself that Callum was in Xadia learning to do magic. That was his inspiration for sticking with it so long; just to make his brother proud.

  • Demoted to Extra: For much of the first part of the fic, in which he has a kingdom to rule and can’t very well join his bother on adventures.

  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Ezran, having had to take up the throne of a huge kingdom at ten years old and having been acting king for over a year, is quite happy to do away with the monarchy, appoint a council of experienced adults in place of a child king, and go back to being a normal kid in his aunts care.

  • Sibling Triangle: Develops a crush on Ellis, who herself has a Precocious Crush on Callum despite his committed relationship and total disinterest in her.

  • Wise Beyond Their Years: His time as king had left Ezran wiser than he’d been before, at least for a time. He shows this when he does away with the monarchy, saying that he was responsible for all of them as king, and a part of responsibility is admitting when something isn’t working. He was eleven years old when he said that. Averted a couple of years later when he makes a foolish, life-threatening choice for his family.

Rayla

  • Break the Cutie: In chapter thirteen, Rayla is faced with the decaying body of a long-dead elf who has been butchered in the name of dark magic. She goes into shock and is easy pickings for Viren and Claudia to take down, even with Amaya protecting her. When she awakens in a hospital bed, she breaks down crying over the cruelty.

  • You Can't Go Home Again: This is sealed in chapter four, in which the rest of her people discover her relationship with Callum. As of chapter twelve, she seems to have found a new home in Novus with Callum and his family.

  • Gaining the Will to Kill: In chapter twenty-two, Rayla makes her first kill when an old friend of hers threatens Callum’s life. Although they were never especially close, she’s still torn up about it afterward and doesn’t want to kill again.

  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Rayla is still shunned by her people in the Silvergrove even in light of what she’s done. She may have saved the Dragon Prince and returned him to his mother, but even that can’t erase the shame of befriending humans and fighting alongside them as equals. It gets worse when word gets out about her romantic relationship with one, at which point she seems to become public enemy number one until the Dragon Queen herself steps in.

  • Mama Bear: Becomes as protective of Mira as she had been of Zym years before.

  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Revealed to be this when interacting with Mira, who she frequently carries as if she were the girl’s mother. She might be an excellent fighter and occasional prankster who can snark with the best of them, but she’s also surprisingly maternal.

     Antagonists

Claudia

  • Break the Cutie: Is implied to have happened as a result of the happenings in season three, with Claudia starting the fic out being much less quirky and fun-spirited. Intensified when Viren is killed, when she seems to plunge into full villainy.

  • Green-Eyed Monster: A decent chunk of her ill will towards Rayla comes from the latter’s relationship with Callum.

  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: The first chapter closes off with Claudia saying that Rayla is her kill; Aaravos and her father can kill whoever else they want, but she’s going to be the one to kill Rayla.

  • Unrequited Love Switcheroo: She’s become attracted to Callum, who is now older, taller and more confident then when they knew each other as kids. Whether this attraction is purely physical or if she has actual feelings for him is unknown. Meanwhile Callum, who used to trip over himself to even talk to Claudia, has moved on and is blissfully happy with another girl.

Viren

  • Moral Myopia: He is shown to genuinely love his daughter but seems to have no trouble manipulating the parent-child bond between Rayla and her parents. His reasoning when called out on this was that they are elves and apparently don’t have the same emotional capacity to love as humans, meaning the bond isn’t worth as much.

  • Living Battery: It’s implied that having been brought back from the dead by dark magic, Viren needs to periodically use dark magic to absorb another’s life force and rejuvenate his constantly deteriorating body.

  • Morality Pet: Claudia, his only wholly positive relationship left, is the only thing keeping him in check, so it seems. This eventually leads to his death.

  • Papa Wolf: Viren dies (for good this time) by Aaravos’s hand when he protects Claudia from a disintegration spell, this time leaving no trace so he can’t be resurrected. His final words are “Not my baby girl!”

  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Aaravos praises Viren for returning him to the corporeal plain, but he really has no true use beyond that. It should be noted that the spell that killed Viren was originally meant for Claudia, who had been putting Aaravos’s plans at risk with her impulsiveness, and which Viren intercepted.

Aaravos

  • Luke, I Might Be Your Father: Aaravos sired a half-elf son with a human before he even became a Dragonguard, who joined the humans in their exile to the west. While nothing is confirmed, Aaravos notes that Callum reminds him of his son in many ways.

  • Love Is a Weakness: He calls the love between Callum and Rayla ‘useful’ to his and Viren’s goals. This is likely a newer philosophy of his, as he did have a child with a human woman.

  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Or something to its effect. According to the Dragon Queen, Aaravos used to be a peaceful soul who held genuine fondness for humans and truly loved his family. It was becoming an archmage, which is established as dangerous, that led him down a dark path.

     Allies

General Amaya

  • Anger Born of Worry: In the short time they believe Callum is dead, she is determined to keep Ezran safe because he’s now the only family she has left. This leads to arguments between them and her being furious when she finds she’s run away.

  • Like A Daughter To Me: Is implied to care a great deal about Rayla, allowing her to live with her and the boys with apparently little question and following her on a self-appointed quest to make sure she doesn’t get hurt. Played straight with Mira, an orphaned child found by Callum and Rayla and brought back to Novus, who Amaya immediately adores.

  • Mama Bear: Has become protective of Rayla. During the first confrontation with Viren, in which Callum was speaking with Aaravos, Amaya does everything in her power to protect the elf.

Soren

  • The Atoner: When Katolis is destroyed, Ezran takes the opportunity to abolish the monarchy, opting instead to create a village with a council. This means Soren and the other crown guard are technically released from their duties. Soren, however, chooses to continue protecting Ezran out of guilt over what his father and sister almost did to him.

  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Soren vows to be a better parent than Viren and is determined to love whatever children he sires with all his heart.

  • Calling Parents by Their Name: He’s gotten into the habit of referring to Viren by name, showing his disownment of the relationship.

  • Interspecies Romance: Develops an interest in Ibis’s daughter, Zephyr. They get together eventually.

  • Shipper on Deck: During a timeskip, Soren, along with Ezran and Amaya, caught Callum and Rayla sleeping together, as in having fallen asleep in the same bed. Soren’s response was apparently to whistle at this.

Lain and Tiadrin

  • Let's Have Another Baby: Tiadrin makes this request of a surprised but oh-so willing Lain. Seeing as their only current child is now nearly grown and they never even got a chance to watch her grow up, it’s understandable.

  • Mama Bear and Papawolf: It is revealed early on that their own daughter was their inspiration for the lengths they went to protecting the egg. Later, seeing her being hurt by Viren is apparently what allowed them to break out of the coins on their own.

  • Openminded Parent: At least in comparison to Runaan. Tiadrin tries to keep an open mind in the interest of her daughter’s happiness, but she is clearly uncomfortable with her only child being romantically pursued by a human. Lain is a bit more suspicious of Callum, but not as furious as Runaan. Ethari is in the same camp as Tiadrin, knowing that it would be useless to try and change Rayla’s mind.

  • So Proud of You: If Queen Zubeia is to be believed, Rayla’s parents often talked about her on the guard before Viren showed up. Lian in particular is said to have become annoying to his fellow guards with his bragging.

Queen Zubeia

  • Do with Him as You Will: Queen Zubeia has learned her lesson about revenge (see Vengeance Feels Empty below), so her reaction to Amer getting thousands of people killed though his stupidity and bigotry is to promptly dismiss him from the Dragonguard and release him in the custody of his very, very angry sister and let her deal with him.

  • Mama Bear: Is protective of Rayla, likely as a debt of gratitude to her parents, who are the sole reason her own child is still alive.

  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Zubeia is not afraid to take action herself, such as when she battled Sol Regem because he was about to lay waste to Katolis.

  • Vengeance Feels Empty: Queen Zubeia remembers ordering king Harrow and his son killed in revenge for her husband and child, and she received word of the king’s death. The next morning, she woke up with her heart more hallow then before because her revenge didn’t change anything. Her husband and egg were still gone and would never come back.

     New Characters

Aarush

A half-startouch elf, the son of Aaravos and an unnamed human woman. Long dead by the time the series would be to start.

  • Ambiguous Situation: There is circumstantial evidence to suggest that he might have been an ancestor, of Callum’s, having taken a human wife and so on and so forth leading eventually to his birth. As far as hard evidence goes, there’s nothing proving there is any blood relation at all.

  • Archnemesis Dad: Grew to hate his father for his crimes against Xadia, and apparently died to trap him in the mirror.

  • Luke, I Might Be Your Father: Callum is said to have the same green eyes as him and it is made clear that centuries of breeding with humans would have naturally striped any physical evidence of elven blood away even that of such a powerful being as Aaravos. Even when Callum meets him face to face, Aarush himself doesn’t know because of his half-life barring him from the afterlife, so he was unable to keep an eye on his descendants.

  • Posthumous Character: Has been dead for some centuries before the show starts.

  • Soul Jar: Actually referred to as a Soul Jar, Aarush preserved a piece of his spirit in the Key of Aaravos, to be summoned should his father ever escape his imprisonment. Once he is summoned, his spirit is finally allowed to ascend to the spirit world, which thankfully doesn’t seem to hinder the key’s abilities.

The Splinter Elves

A band of ten, later down to three, young elves who have rebelled against the Silvergrove by pursuing Rayla against Queen Zubeia’s wishes.

  • Casanova Wannabe: Sirus, the ringleader, has romantic feelings for, or at least is physically attracted to Rayla. He used to follow her around like a puppy, to her slight annoyance. He seems to now be under the impression that he’s rescuing her from Callum’s corruption of her.

  • Honor Before Reason: They seem to be operating under this logic, going after Rayla because she’s a disgrace to their race, even after the Dragon Queen herself has forbidden it.

  • Shipper on Deck: Overlaps with Fantastic Racism. Seeing Callum and Rayla interact, Kiara says that, if only he wasn’t a human, they would be so cute.

  • Unknown Rival: Played with. Callum knows that Sirus wants to take Rayla from him, but he doesn’t seem to take him seriously given how she seems totally disinterested. They even joke about it once.

  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Half of them are killed at the Storm Spire (whether from the guards or the thinning air is unknown) before we are properly introduced to them. Two others apparently parish during a timeskip by unknown means. The only names with know are Sirus, Kiara and Latis.

  • We Used to Be Friends: Kiara, the sweetest of them, used to be Rayla’s best friend when they were little, but they apparently grew apart as they got older.

Mira

An orphaned Earthblood elf child who Callum and Rayla save and take back home. Is currently living with them, though they have plans to place her with a new family.

  • Children Are Innocent: Averted. Coming from a village of human-hating elves, Mira distrusts Callum despite his attempts to be kind to her. Of course, with her being so young (implied about four years old), this doesn’t last long.

  • Dumb Struck: Seems to be unable to speak due to the trauma she endured at such a young age.

  • Is That Cute Kid Yours?: When meeting Soren, he is stunned and confused to see the child, apparently thinking that Callum and Rayla somehow produced a child who apparently was concieved, carried to term, born and aged four years all in the span of two months. Justified with her green eyes, brown hair and elven features, making it so she can easily pass as their biological daughter.

  • Orphan's Ordeal: Has gone through a lot for such a little thing.

  • Meaningful Rename: She is given the name Mira, which is an old elven name for ‘a little miracle’ which seems fitting that she’s the sole survivor of a village-wide massacre. She is noted as having forgotten her birth name and seems perfectly happy as Mira.
