Main Characters

     Simon
The protagonist of Traveler's Gate. Simon is a traveler of Valinhall, the House of Blades.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Simon wields a huge sword that's only usable with super strength. It's also hard to use in close combat. His gifted Nye cloak looks cool, but he's frustrated with it when he first gets it. He does eventually get use to the Nye cloak and he even finds it useful with Nye essence.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Valinhall in general is overspecialized in fighting, but Simon specifically is overspecialized in killing. He's absolutely terrible at everything else, but he's one of the few people who can fight Incarnations at an even level. In one short story, Indirial's daughter thinks she's a better fighter than him because she's beating him in a spar... until she sees him fight for real and realizes he's just terrible at holding back.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He can be pretty sardonic at times.
  • Screw Destiny: Simon is told that he has no great destiny and that he should just leave everything to Alin. Despite this, Simon resolves to find power on his own and forge a new path.
  • The Unchosen One: Simon is explicitly told that he isn't meant for anything, as apposed to Alin, who has a whole prophecy about him.

     Alin
Alin is a member of Simon's village. He is a traveler of Elysia, the City of Light.
  • The Chosen One: Him being a traveler of Elysia makes him part of a prophecy.
  • Fatal Flaw: He's got a few, making it hard to pick out his worst, but the one that most often bites him in the back is his tunnel vision. Once he gets set on something, he goes at it full bore without stopping and without asking questions. It doesn't help when everyone around him is praising him as a hero.
  • Large Ham: Simon describes Alin as talking like he's narrating a story. He can be talking about literally anything and still try to make it sound grand.
  • Only Friend: Although Simon doesn't seem to really realize it, Alin is the only person in the village he's actually close to. Alin, likewise, is friendly with everyone but only (rarely) lets his guard down around Simon.
  • Training the Gift of Magic: He's the first natural-born Elysian Traveler in three hundred years, letting him fight a trained Endross Traveler within five minutes of awakening his powers. He still has to train to get better, though.

     Leah
Leah is from Simon's village and is heiress of Damascas. She is a traveler of Liriel, the Crystal Fields, and Ragnarus, the Crimson Vault.
  • Compelling Voice: Her Ragnarus crown allows her to give an order that must be obeyed. The price is that she is struck mute and has her Ragnarus abilities disabled; the stronger the order, the longer the duration of the price.
  • Damsel in Distress: What she is to Simon and Alin in the first book. They are both rather confused when they arrive to rescue her and find her in a much better state than expected.
