Characters / The Order: 1886

Go To

Sir Galahad / Grayson

The protagonist of The Order: 1886 and respected knight. His former Undying Loyalty gets progressively shaken and with the onset of the industrial revolution, he starts to slowly question The Order and his own allegiance to it. Tutored by sir Perceval and mentor to Igraine.

Voiced by: Steve West

  • Badass Creed: Never outright said in game, but Galahad's motto present woven into his sleeve reads Post Tenebras Veritasnote
  • Broken Pedestal: Ends up on both ends of this trope, with Lucan and Chancellor shaking his faith in the Knight fellowship, and breaking his own in letting Igraine believe he turned traitor.
  • Defector from Decadence: Lets say Malory's teaching rubs off on him.
  • Fate Worse than Death: In-Universe consideration. He takes death sentence far better than being forced to sever all ties to Isabeau and the rest of the Order.
  • Heroic BSoD: Thrice. First after he discovers his mentor's body, second when Igraine names him guilty, and finally third at the very end, when Lord Chancellor casts him out of the Order for being the Only Sane Man.
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: Being in the middle of the fight for centuries, Galahad ended up rather cynical and overall impervious to emotional investment, with few notable exceptions.
  • Legacy Character: Third person to bear the title of Sir Galahad.
  • One Name Only: While every other team member has a known full name, Galahad is only known as Grayson.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After Sebastien Malory's death, until he finds out that the Rebels are not the real enemy.
  • Secular Hero: He appears to be an atheist, based on this line of dialogue, in response to Lafayette praying over a dead police officer:
Galahad: Save your prayers Lafayette, there is no God to help him.

Sir Perceval / Sebastien Malory

Former mentor of Grayson and oldest member of the main cast, Perceval is an experienced knight who spent a few hundred years fighting the Half-Breed threat. He's one of the oldest knights present at the Round Table and a respected presence for many. Said to be somehow related to Thomas Malory, the author of Le Morte d'Arthur.

Voiced by: Graham McTavish

Lady Igraine / Isabeau D'Argyll

Youngest person to ever be inducted into the Order, fiercely loyal to the Round Table. Formerly trained by Galahad.

Voiced by: Alice Coulthard

  • Action Girl: As a knight, she's just as fearless, headstrong and dedicated as any other.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Galahad quite often slips into calling her Isi.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Zig-zagged. She's sporting quite a nasty scar spanning one side of her throat with fashion of the Victorian era covering most of it. But when she ends up with a life-threatening injury, the Lycan snaps her spine rather than maul her.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Competes with Grayson, usually playfully snarking at him for his age.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Heavily hinted that at least part of her Inspector Javert hunt and hatred towards the Rebels later in the game is because she thinks Galahad was personally involved with the Rebel Leader.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers one when she's led to believe Galahad is guilty of treason.
  • Inspector Javert: Becomes one to Galahad when she swears to hunt down the Rebels to the very last one.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Her uniforms resemble high Victorian women's fashion, heavily modified for combat, of course.
  • Legacy Character: Took the name of king Arthur's mother.

Marquis de Lafayette / Sir Perceval

Newest member of Galahad's group. Seeing several and travelling the world gave him a whimsical demeanor. As knight-in-training, he's yet to adopt the name of a true knight.

Voiced by: Frederik Hamel

  • The Charmer: There's not a woman in London he won't try to seduce. It's debatable whether he actually follows in on it or just enjoys the flirting.
  • Gratuitous French: There's barely any sentence he says that doesn't run on this trope.
  • The Heart: Being much younger than his colleagues and therefore much less hardened towards the world around him, he often serves as a walking conscience and foil to Galahad's cynism.
  • Historical Domain Character: Yes, he is the Lafayette, as in the veteran of French and American revolutions. And he's the youngest of the team. Nonetheless, he's quite different from the historical figure, namely that Marquis de La Fayette wasn't a seductive Casanova type but a Happily Married man, secondly, LaFayette joined the American Revolution because his father died fighting the English during the Seven Years' War and he wanted revenge, he also remained a French patriot. As such, its quite a stretch for him to be joining an English Order of Knights, needless to say.note
  • Legacy Character: He inherits the title of Sir Perceval and the seat at the Round Table that goes with it after his mentor's death.
  • Older Than They Look: Order standard, with Lafayette ticking somewhere close to his 130s.
  • Old Soldier: Despite his appearance, being the veteran of not one, but two wars for independence that took place a century ago qualifies him as one.
  • Only Sane Man: He's the only Order member to avert My Country, Right or Wrong, because his participation in 2 revolutions has taught him to recognize that there can be dangerous extremists or opportunists on both sides of any conflict.
  • Overly Long Name: His full name of Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, is actually said in-game. All but this one example stick to "Marquis" or "Lafayette" for obvious reasons.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Downplayed but present. He inherits his mentor's coat of arms and ceremonial parts of his armor to wear.

Sir Lucan / Alastair D'Argyll

A Knight-Commander of the Order, sir Lucan claims quite the high-ranking position and his voice has solid weight with the council. Isabeau's brother and son to Lord Chancelor, he tries to be a voice of reason for many of the plans hatched up by the main cast.

Voiced by: Matthew Waterson

  • Animal Motifs: His coat of arms features a wolf in statant attitude.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: His dialogue with Lord Hastings suggests he's working with the Master Vampire rather than for him. Alastair seems to have authority over the Lycans while Hastings has authority over the vampires.
  • Big Brother Instinct: His sister's wellbeing seems to be quite high on his list of priorities.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He claims his love for his sister and adopted father are genuine and his actions earlier seem to confirm it.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Averted. Alastair appears to be aware of Galahad and Igraine's mutual affections and seems to be just fine with it.
  • Only Sane Man: Subverted. His interests in keeping the status quo seem equally shared between keeping his secret and at least partially caring for his fellow knights' fate.
  • Putting on the Reich: From all the knights of the Order, his appearance is by far the most in sync with this trope.
  • Undying Loyalty: Except that his loyalty towards his kind proved to be more undying than that towards the Order.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Being on the receiving end of this saved his life as a child.

Nikola Tesla

Genius inventor from the late 19th century and pioneer in the field of electrical devices, Tesla serves as The Order version of Q, supplying the knights with various useful tool and gadgets. Preferably in a fine leather carrying case.

Voiced by: Yuri Lowenthal

  • Defector from Decadence: Works with the Rebels, even though he's officially employed by the Order.
  • Foreshadowing: Galahad can discover that one of his schematics was written on the back of an advertisement for a brothel in Whitechapel, which he laughs off as meaning that Tesla is a patron of their services. In actuality, the brothel is a rebel headquarters, and Tesla was working with them the entire time.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He can whip up an arc rifle from a discarded rifle stock and a few wires.
  • Historical Domain Character: And one of the only people actually hailing from the time period the game takes place in.
  • Historical In-Joke: His rivalry with Edison is still as strong as ever.
Galahad: Nikola, how fares your friend Edison these days?
Nikola: Thomas and I...are not on speaking terms. (Beat) The man is an idiot!

Lord Chancellor

Leader of the Order and Isabeau and Alastair's adopted father.

Voiced by Paul Gregory

  • Big Good: As leader of the Order.
  • Old Soldier: In addition to his physical age, he is centuries old, is the leader of the Order of Knights and has fought alongside King Arthur himself. An official art book for the Order, titled Blackwater Archives, confirms the Lord Chancellor's identity as being Lancelot himself.
  • Papa Wolf: Towards Alastair. He clearly loves his son despite him being a Half Breed and demands the secret be kept for the Order's sake. Even when he knows Alastair must die, he refuses to be the one who kills him. He also states the secret must be kept for Isabeau's sake.
  • Pet the Dog: His strict and rough demeanor throughout the game aside, there's his relationship with his adopted children. Namely, raising and protecting Alastair despite knowing his true heritage as a Lycan. He demands Grayson not the reveal the truth to anyone, especially Isabeau for her sake and that of the Order, and demands that Grayson to finish what he started with Alastair and leave as opposed to killing him on the spot.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite his apparent disinterest in the Whitechappel killings, he does leave the decision to look into it up to a vote. Also at the end of the game, rather than have Grayson killed on the spot, despite everything (fatally wounding his son, killing a large number of the Order's soldiers, and apparently being a traitor) has him ousted from the Order and demands he vanishes as London falls under martial law to hunt Grayson, so long as the truth about Alastair isn't revealed.

Lord Hastings/ Jacob Van Neck

A respected aristocrat and head of the United India Company, who frequents the Order's council meetings and assassination target of the rebels. Is in fact a Master Vampire behind the Half Breed army and its attacks.

Voiced by David Shaughnessy

  • Ax-Crazy: Comes with being Jack the Ripper.
  • Big Bad: Is the true mastermind behind the Half Breed and vampire scourge in London and plans to expand the scourge beyond England.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Seems like a calm, charming and respectful man, and keeps up the front as he's revealed to be a monster.
  • Man Behind the Man: To the Half Breeds and Alastair.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Subverted, he has personally been killing people as Jack the Ripper and attempts to attack Lady Lakshmi as a vampire, but the player never fights him.
  • Serial Killer: Jack the Ripper no less.
  • The Sociopath: Committed all these atrocities for power and his own enjoyment
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Disappears shortly after being exposed to Grayson, who instead fights with Alastair, with no final confrontation, leaving him open as a potential sequel hook.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: As far as the public knows, he is the respected head of United India and an ally of the Order.

Lakshmibai / Rani of Jhansi

A deposed Queen turned rebel leader after faking her own death at the end of the Indian Rebellion. After losing her kingdom to the United India Companies machinations and their invading force of vampires & lycans, she took the fight to England instead.

Voiced by Tehmina Sunny

  • Bilingual Bonus: Lakshmi and Devi talk in Hindi between themselves whenever they don't want anyone else to know what they're saying.
  • Faking the Dead: She did this to throw the British off her trail. Rightly assuming that their arrogance meant that they wouldn't look too hard.
Galahad: Our Generals reported you dead in Gwalior.
Lakshmi: I have always benefited from the underestimation of fools.
  • Historical Domain Character: Lakshmibai is one of the key figures of the Indian Rebellion in 1857. Trained as a warrior from childhood, she married the Raj of Jhansi when she was just sixteen. She was so loved by her people, that when the Raj died, her subjects were more than happy to have her as regent and continue to rule over them. The East India Company however objected to this... They thought it was going to be an easy take over, and she would just roll over and accept it. They were wrong.
    • When she died, the British let out a collective sigh of relief. She invoked such loyalty, that they weren't sure they could keep the fighting going against her.
  • Government in Exile: Unclear if she wants her kingdom back though, since the rebels shout down with the queen, down with empire as a cheer. Seems these days she just wants to save others from what happened to her.
  • King Incognito / Rags to Royalty : Mostly to the Order Knights, as they have no idea who exactly they're facing and she keeps it that way. Devi calls her by title though, so the Rebels probably know who she is. Galahad is... suitably impressed when he finds out.
Galahad: The Rani of Jhansi? The famous warrior queen who took up arms against our forces in India?
Lakshmi: I surprise you again, Knight?
  • Mama Bear: She is shades of this towards Devi. From Devi's grit teeth, she's a little sick of this treatment.
  • Older Than They Look: As with everyone that has access to the Blackwater.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Both in history, and in the game. Lakshmibai was famous for riding into battle alongside her men, and fell on the fields outside Gwalior doing so. Apparently that habit hasn't changed since she went to London, she's right there in the thick of it with them...
  • You Rebel Scum!: On the receiving end of one of these from Galahad after the airship her rebel forces explode in an attempt to kill Lord Hastings, crash lands into THE Crystal Palace, killing Sir Perceval.
  • Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters: Comes into discussion more than once. To the Order, what she's doing is complete anarchy, not just destruction to London, but if she accomplishes her goals, it'll send the entire Empire crashing down. To the impoverished of Whitechapel however, who are being preyed upon by monstrous creatures, and the people who are supposed to be defending them are only seeing to the rich, she's giving them hope and protecting them when no one else will.

Devi Nayar

First lieutenant to Lakshmi in the rebel forces, as well as bodyguard and something of a decoy.

Voiced by Nishi Munshi

  • Badass Normal: She might not have the blackwater, but she's more than capable of handling her own in a fight.
Lakshmi [watching Devi walk away]: You do not want to get on the wrong side of that one.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Devi insists its her place to guard Lakshmi, but...
  • Decoy Leader: The player and Galahad are lead to believe / assume Devi is the rebel leader for a good while, given she does command and is seen leading much every major fight with the Rebels up until Lakshmi reveals herself.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Slightly with Galahad, she really really doesn't like him to start with, since he and the knights are a singular pain in the butt to the rebels. They nearly shoot each other. But once he proves his loyalty, she doesn't mind him so much...
  • Truth in Television: Lakshmi actually kept an all female guard around her when she ruled. The British noted them as being highly skilled and fearless in a fight.
  • Undying Loyalty: She has this to Lakshmi.
