Main Characters

    In General
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: As a whole, the main characters consist of three males (Genji, Luan, and Kalsang) and three females (Aiko, Nami, and Maya).
  • Kid Hero: Mostly played straight. Genji, Luan, and Aiko are all seventeen years old, Maya is sixteen, and Nami is fifteen. Kalsang is an exception to this trope, being eighteen years old.
  • Party of Representatives: We have Genji from the Si Wong Tribes, Luan from the mainland Earth Federation, Aiko from the Fire Nation, Nami from the Water Tribes, Kalsang from the Air Nation, and Maya from the Ocean Folk.

    Genji

Avatar Genji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_14_5052137018.jpg

The titular protagonist of the webcomic and, unbeknownst to himself, the true reincarnation of Avatar Korra. He's a sandbender from the Hami Tribe who lives in the city of Jinsha with his mother and sister after his family was forcibly relocated there by the Earth Federation.

  • Adaptational Job Change: In the original iteration of the webcomic, Genji was an employee at a convenience store. When the comic was rewritten, it was changed so that Genji worked as a part-time mechanic at an auto repair shop.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: He is noticeably more moody, sulky, and cynical compared to how he was originally portrayed in the 2017 Tapas webcomic.
  • Adaptational Wimp: In terms of sandbending ability, Genji from the 2022 Webtoon comic is a lot less impressive compared to his depiction in the discontinued 2017 Tapas comic. In the original version, there's a scene where Genji bends a pair of sand roller skates around his feet for him to zip around town on. In the rewritten version, there is no such scene. When Genji wanted to play with Shai in the Tapas comic, he created a flying carpet made of sand for her to ride on. In the Webtoon comic, the same scene plays out with Genji instead generating a whirlwind to lift Shai off the ground.
  • Ambiguous Criminal History: We know that he used to hang around with sand raiders like Malik and did all sorts of "jobs" for them, though it's not clarified what exactly he did. At the start of the webcomic, he's trying to go straight and wants to put his criminal past behind him.
  • Ancestral Name: He shares the same name as his paternal grandmother.
  • Anti-Hero: Genji's a cynical hothead but he is devoted to those he cares about.
  • Battle Strip: In "The Avatar Returns: Part IV", Genji removes most of his clothing barring his pants and arm wraps before his match with Quicksand in the Sandbox.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He is very protective of his little sister Shai, who is the only person he really opens up to. When Genji's apartment is bombed, he can be seen protectively hugging Shai after the smoke clears.
  • Book Dumb: For a chronic truant who dropped out of school, he is surprisingly talented when it comes to fixing automobiles and is praised by Lao as "the best sandbendin' mechanic" he knows. Rather impressive given how he has no formal training and likely had to learn on the job.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character:
    • Aang and Korra were child prodigies when it came to bending. At the time, Aang was the youngest airbending master in history and achieved mastery over the other three elements in less than a year. Korra, meanwhile, could already bend water, earth, and fire at the tender age of 4. Genji, although a capable sandbender, doesn't have an innate skill or talent for bending like his predecessors.
    • Aang and Korra started out their respective series already knowing they were the Avatar and having found out before the usual Dangerous 16th Birthday. Genji, by contrast, begins the story at the age of seventeen and is still completely unaware of his destiny as the next Avatar.
    • Both Aang and Korra were single children whereas Genji has a younger sibling.
    • At the start of her series, Korra was a Country Mouse who grew up sheltered in a White Lotus compound and thus was somewhat naive about what life in Republic City was like. Genji contrasts her by having a much more jaded view of city life as a result of spending his teenage years in an urban slum.
  • Cool Big Bro: To his little sister Shai. He often uses his sandbending to play with her and lets her watch pro-bending matches with him on their TV. According to this Tumblr post, Shai loves visiting Genji while he's working at Lao's repair shop and he enjoys showing her how to fix automobiles.
  • The Cynic: He doesn't trust anyone, firmly believes that Life Isn't Fair, and scoffs at the notion of a privileged celebrity like Luan ever having to work hard for anything.
  • Delinquent: He used to be one before Book 1. When Genji was younger, he often skipped school, made friends with sand raiders, and got into all sorts of trouble.
  • Don't Tell Mama: He tries to keep his legally-questionable activities like participating in the Sandbox and doing various "jobs" for Malik a secret from his mom and sister.
  • Fan of Underdog: He is an obsessed fan of the Fire Ferrets despite the fact that the team hasn't won a pro-bending match for the last 17 years.
  • Justified Criminal: Genji only reluctantly agrees to smuggle for Malik because he needs money for rent (and Malik could tell this because Genji was participating in a match against an opponent above his level for the prize money in the Sandbox) with the mention of a Noodle Incident implying that Genji has done other "jobs" in the past for Malik. He even asks what he's transporting only for Malik to tell him it's better he doesn't know.
  • Loser Protagonist: Genji at the beginning of the story. He comes from a financially poor family, wears clothing that is ragged and worn out, dropped out of school after doing poorly in his classes, has an antisocial and moody personality, is a former deliquent, participates in street fights, is regularly strapped for cash, is a mediocre sandbender compared to his peers, and gets steamrolled in the first two fights scenes that he's in.
  • Made of Iron: During his brawl with Quicksand in the Sandbox, Genji is on the receiving end of a sand blast so powerful that it sends him flying into a stone ring post with enough force to crack it. This merely leaves him bruised and winded rather than dead or critically injured.
  • Missed the Call: Genji was born as a sandbender who moves a lot which is why the White Lotus were unable to find him.
  • Promotion to Parent: Downplayed. Genji's mom spends the entire day away at work and only returns home late in the evening, so it's up to him to be "the man of the house" and take care of his kid sister Shai.
  • Really 17 Years Old: A Tumblr post by one of the project's creators states that Genji lied about his age to snag a part-time job as a mechanic at an automobile repair shop.
  • Reincarnation: He's the true reincarnation of Avatar Korra.
  • Reincarnation-Identifying Trait: He is a huge fan of the Fire Ferrets, the same pro-bending team that his past self Korra used to be a member of.
  • Sand Blaster: He's a sandbender, having been taught how to sandbend by his father at a young age.
  • Troubled Teen: Genji is a moody and distrustful teenager who dropped out of school and involves himself in risky activities like Fight Clubbing and hanging out with gangs. This likely stems from his father abandoning his family when Genji was 13, leaving his mother as the primary breadwinner of the family. Because of this, Genji's mother spent nearly all her time away at work, leaving Genji feeling neglected as he was forced to deal with many of the household affairs such as taking care of his little sister and making sure the rent is always paid.
  • Tsurime Eyes: He is drawn with eyes that slant upward which convey how he has a more serious and cynical personality compared to the other main characters.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Based on this artwork made for Mother's Day, Genji used to be a Cheerful Child who appears to have had a loving relationship with his mother. This is a far cry from the Troubled Teen with Parental Issues that we're introduced to at the start of Book 1.
  • Working-Class Hero: He is the main protagonist of the story and comes from a lower-class background. At the start of the comic, his family lives in a small apartment and Genji's main motivation is making sure that they keep it despite their economic situation.

    Luan

Luan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_11_9849530997.jpg

A young earthbender from Gaoling who was mistakenly identified as the Avatar by the White Lotus and Earth Federation. Over the years, Luan has developed the charisma, intelligence, and physical prowess necessary to become a great Avatar. Despite this, he is frustrated by the extremely slow pace of his Avatar training and is eager to finally learn how to firebend.

  • The Ace: While he may not be the true Avatar, Luan is a genuine earthbending prodigy. Part of this is justified since he had an elite education practically handed to him on a silver platter from a young age. He also has many of the traits one would expect from an ideal Avatar, being described as a natural leader, kind-hearted, altruistic, and charismatic.
  • Closet Geek: It's mentioned on Luan's character bio that he has a geeky side which he likes to keep to himself. Specifically, he's a big enough fan of the Starbenders TV series that he's personally met the show's cast.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: As the supposed Avatar, Luan was naturally afforded with the best earthbending teachers in the world and thus is an incredibly skilled earthbender for his age.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: He's a gifted metalbender, having mastered it faster than even Avatar Korra after spending three months training in Zaofu. Bao Jun claims that the Beifong family was left impressed by how quickly Luan got the hang of metalbending.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Is this as the false Avatar, though he isn't aware of this and genuinely wants to be the best Avatar he can be.
  • Famed In-Story: Being the supposed Avatar has made Luan the most famous teenager in the world with tabloids obsessing over every detail of his life. When he returns to Ba Sing Se after spending three months learning how to metalbend in Zaofu, the entire city erupts into celebration and he is met by cheering crowds and nosy reporters.
  • Groupie Brigade: The comic's website mentions that Luan has his own fangirl army due to his fame as the Avatar.
  • Hates the Job, Loves the Limelight: Inverted. Luan eagerly accepts the duties and responsibilities of being the Avatar like learning how to bend all four elements and serving as a diplomat for all five nations. However, it's implied more than once that he is not so fond of all the fame and celebrity that comes with being the Avatar. He openly admits that he would rather train for his earthbending exam than socialize at a party and complains about how the tabloids misrepresent aspects of his private life.
  • Jumped at the Call: Similar to Korra, Luan spent the last eleven years of his life being told that he was the Avatar and is extremely enthusiastic about mastering all four elements. According to his character bio, he begged Bao Jun to allow him to learn metalbending when he was 16. Upon returning to Ba Sing Se in the first chapter, he excitedly tells Bao Jun that he can't wait to begin his firebending training.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He wholeheartedly believes that he is the real Avatar and doesn't know that everything about his fame is based on a lie.

    Aiko Hibana

Aiko Hibana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_10_3564426951.jpg

The adopted daughter of a successful Fire Nation diplomat, Aiko attends the Royal Fire Nation Academy for Girls while her mother works, but often wishes her mother had more time for her. At the start of Book 1, she is spending her spring break visiting her mother in Ba Sing Se.

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: She excels in her academic courses and consistently ranks at the top of her class, but her constant strive for perfection makes her seem bossy and opinionated to the other girls at her school.
  • Character Tics: Aiko seems to have a habit of blowing and popping bubbles with gum whenever she is being idle.
  • Classy Cravat: The outfit she wears when she goes shopping in "The Avatar Returns: Part V" includes what can best be described as a pink cravat. Fittingly, she comes from the Fire Nation's upper class.
  • Cool Shades: "The Avatar Returns: Part V" has Aiko sporting a pair of fashionable pint-tinted sunglasses as part of the outfit that she wears while going shopping.
  • Happily Adopted: Downplayed. Aiko knows that she's adopted but isn't bothered by it. However, her relationship with her mother has become somewhat strained as of late due to them rarely being able to spend time together.
  • Hidden Depths: She loves listening to rock music and collects vinyl records in her spare time.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Aiko is the adopted daughter of a Fire Nation ambassador and thus, had a very wealthy upbringing. She comes off as a bossy perfectionist at first glance but if you can bear through that, she'll open up.
  • Magic Skirt: Her first scene has her sitting upside down on a sofa with her legs hanging off the headrest while listening to music through a pair of headphones. She does this all while wearing a skirt that somehow manages to keep itself up to protect her modesty.
  • Off to Boarding School: When she was younger, her mother would often leave her at prestigious boarding schools while she worked as an ambassador.
  • Playing with Fire: She is a firebender.
  • Rule-Abiding Rebel: Justified. Aiko isn't a Rebellious Spirit by nature and just wants her emotionally distant mother to pay attention to her, so she limits herself to petty acts of rebellion that will grate on her mother's nerves but go unnoticed by everyone else. For example, when Aiko shows up to a formal party that her mother was forcing her to attend, she deliberately arrives hours late in a pink gown clearly different from the one her mother picked out for her, while sporting extremely high-heeled slippers in defiance of her mother's previous instructions to not bring shoes that would make her seem tall.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: So far, every scene featuring her has her wearing a different outfit.

    Nami

Nami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_43_4381496629.jpg

A 15-year-old nonbender from the Northern Water Tribe who possesses the unique ability to see and interact with spirits. At the start of Book 1, she moves to Air Temple Island to train as an Air Acolyte under Master Jinora in hopes of learning how to control her spiritual powers.

  • Achievement In Ignorance: Her character bio states that her Power Incontinence would sometimes cause her to accidentally transport herself into the Spirit World, something that normally requires either very deep meditation or the use of spirit portals.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In the Tapas comic, Nami was excited upon discovering she was an airbender and had plenty of friends in the Northern Water Tribe who supported her. In the Webtoon comic, Nami grew up being ostracized for her powers, had a Friendless Background, and isn't as happy about leaving her home to become an Air Acolyte.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: In the 2017 version, Nami's backstory was that she was an ordinary girl from the Northern Water Tribe who left her home and joined the Air Nation in order to learn how to master her airbending, which has only recently manifested. This version is given a completely different backstory of having growing up as a social outcast in her hometown due to her ability to sense spirits, and her reason for becoming an Air Acolyte is learning how to control her chaotic spiritual abilities.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: In the Tapas version, Nami was an airbender born in the Northern Water Tribe. In the Webtoon version, she's a nonbender with very powerful spiritual abilities.
  • Age Lift: In the original 2017 fan comic, Nami is mentioned to be 16 years old by her father. In the rewritten 2022 webcomic, she is aged down to 15.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Because of her chaotic spiritual powers, Nami was seen as the weird kid in her hometown and grew up with no friends. Her inability to waterbend also made her a target for bullying at the private waterbending school she attended. She moved to Air Temple Island in hopes of learning how to control her powers, but still feels isolated from the other Air Acolytes and struggles to adapt to their culture.
  • The Apprentice: She moves into Air Temple Island at the start of the story to train as Jinora's protégé in hopes of learning how to control her spiritual powers.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Nami is the youngest of the main characters, being fifteen whereas most of them are around the age of seventeen. She's also the shortest, standing at 5'1".
  • Better with Non-Human Company: Ever since she was very little, Nami could see spirits and became close to them. This, combined with being treated as an outcast by her human peers, has made her greatly prefer the company of spirits over people.
  • Does Not Like Spam: According to her character bio, she hates vegetables, which becomes a challenge for her when she moves in with the Air Acolytes.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: She is from the Northern Water Tribe and came to Republic City to study as an Air Acolyte at Air Temple Island. A source of drama for her is learning to adjust to the culture of the Air Nation.
  • Friendless Background: Growing up, Nami had no close friends aside from a spirit named Po because her ability to see spirits weirded out the other kids in her hometown.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in pigtails, highlighting how she is the youngest out of the protagonists.
  • Mage Born of Muggles: Played with. Nami was born a nonbender like her mother and father, but possesses unusual spiritual powers that neither of her parents ever had.
  • Magnetic Medium: Ever since Nami was a little girl, spirits would often be drawn to her presence due to her heightened spiritual sensitivity. This led to Nami's home in the Northern Water Tribe getting frequent visits from spirits, which led to her house getting a reputation for being haunted.
  • Nervous Tics: She pulls down on her pigtails whenever she's stressed.
  • Power Incontinence: Because she was born during a winter solstice, Nami grew up with extraordinary spiritual abilities that she couldn't control.
  • The Quiet One: During her first appearance, she hardly says a word and shows discomfort interacting with other people.
  • Shrinking Violet: As a result of her Friendless Background and past experience with bullying, she starts out in the story as a quiet and withdrawn girl who clearly feels uncomfortable being around other people and shies away from social interaction.
  • Significant Birth Date: Nami was born in the Northern Water Tribe on a winter solstice. In-universe, a solstice is when spirits can exert the most influence over the physical world. Because of this, Nami has powerful spiritual abilities which are difficult for her to control.
  • Sweet Tooth: According to her website bio, she enjoys snacking on junk food.
  • The Team Normal: Played with. She is the only main character who is a non-bender. However, she has a natural affinity for spirits that is rather unique for the setting.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Nami is a meat lover, which is another reason she doesn't feel like she fits in with the mostly vegan Air Nation.
  • True Sight: Like Jinora, Nami is able to perceive and interact with spirits that are normally invisible to everyone else.
  • When She Smiles: Throughout her first appearance in the story, Nami is a Perpetual Frowner with the exception of a single scene. While being shown around Air Temple Island by Kalsang, she briefly breaks out of her shell upon noticing all the friendly spirits living on the island and smiles while asking Kalsang whether he is familiar with any of them. This moment doesn't last and Nami's smile quickly disappears from her face after Kalsang's confused reaction makes her realize that he doesn't share her True Sight.

    Kalsang

Kalsang

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_23_9876814302.jpg

The 18-year-old son of Jinora and Kai. He's a curious and idealistic airbender who loves learning about the world around him and grew up practicing a traditional Air Nomad lifestyle.

  • Best Friend: He is best friends with his cousin Songtai, who even delayed his own graduation ceremony so they could get their airbending tattoos together.
  • Blow You Away: Being one of Aang's descendants, Kalsang is naturally a prodigy when it comes to airbending.
  • Fanboy: Of Starbenders. He's seen every episode, named his sky bison after one of the show's characters, and constantly pesters his family and friends with his Starbenders fan theories.
  • Heroic Lineage: Kalsang is the son of Jinora and thus the grandson of Tenzin and great-grandson of Aang and Katara.
  • No Social Skills: In his first appearance, he comes across as an extroverted dork who doesn't know how to read the room. He casually refers to Nami as "the haunted girl" while she and her father were standing right in front of him, and failed to notice everyone around him wince at his words (Songtai did the same thing, but he was at least smart enough to hide it behind sign language). He also makes his uncle Rohan facepalm with his attempts to impress Nami by acting cool. Later, while giving Nami a tour of Air Temple Island, he loudly interrupts a group of meditating monks just to say hi, then goes on to boast to Nami about how popular he is; all while completely oblivious to the irritated looks on the monks' faces, Nami's mortified Blank White Eyes, and Songtai looking away while clenching his teeth in embarrassment.
  • Skilled, but Naive: He's considered a prodigy among the next generation of airbenders and earned the rank of master at the age of fifteen. However, he lacks anything even resembling street smarts since he spent his entire life being sheltered in various Air Temples by his overprotective mother, who felt he wasn't ready to face the real world.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Thinks he's the Big Man on Campus at Air Temple Island and boasts about his popularity to Nami during her tour. If the reactions of his fellow Air Nomads are anything to go by, he's really seen more as The Friend Nobody Likes.
  • Spin-Offspring: He's one of the main characters and is the son of Jinora and Kai.
  • Teen Genius: Kalsang is described as an airbending prodigy who earned his airbending master tattoos at the age of fifteen.

    Maya

Maya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maya_profile_pic.png
A teenage Dai Li agent handpicked by President Bao Jun to be part of Avatar Luan's security detail. She originally came from the Ocean Folk and was recruited by the Dai Li for her unique bending abilities. She is set to appear in Book 1.
  • Child Soldier: Maya was only ten when she was recruited by the Dai Li and taken from her family to be trained as one of their agents. At the age of sixteen, she is already treated as a full-fledged agent within their ranks.
  • Closet Geek: She is secretly a fan of the same sci-fi series as Kalsang, even writing fanfiction about it.
  • Early Personality Signs: During her early childhood with the Ocean Folk, she was the prankster of her family, foreshadowing her mischievous side as a teen.
  • Hero Secret Service: She's assigned to be the Avatar's bodyguard.
  • Heroes Gone Fishing: Outside of her work as a Dai Li agent, Maya enjoys reading comicals in her spare time.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: She grew up surrounded by five siblings prior to her recruitment by the Dai Li.
  • Overly Long Name: Her full name given to her by her Ocean Folk family is "Maya of the Clay and Boat Clans."
  • Rebellious Spirit: Downplayed. Maya likes to throw little rebellions in defiance of the Dai Li's strict rules like keeping forbidden snacks under her bunk, taking longer showers than necessary, and being lazy about doing her laundry.
  • Strict Parents Make Sneaky Kids: Her parental figures for the last five years were the Dai Li, who unsurprisingly gave her a strict upbringing. All this did was teach her how to hide her Rebellious Spirit from them.
  • Teen Superspy: She is a sixteen-year-old girl who works as a government agent for the Dai Li, which is basically the Earth Federation's Sinister Spy Agency.

Pets

    Po

Po

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_5_5953123940.jpg
A sarcastic spirit who Nami befriended as a toddler.
  • Color-Coded Speech: The outline and text of his speech bubbles are colored purple to show how he's a spirit as opposed to the speech bubbles used by human characters, which have regular black outlines and texts.
  • Invisible to Normals: He can only be perceived by humans who are spiritually sensitive like Nami. Otherwise, he's invisible to even airbending masters like Kalsang and Songtai.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: He is Nami's pet spirit who accompanies her everywhere she goes.
  • Only Friend: At the beginning of the comic, he's the only real friend Nami has.
  • Parrot Pet Position: He is shown resting on Nami's right shoulder at the end of "The Avatar Returns: Part III".
  • Sapient Pet: He's Nami's pet spirit and is perfectly capable of human speech.

    Yin Cheng

Yin Cheng

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yin_cheng_log_c1p2.png
A sassy, expressive peacat chosen by Avatar Luan to be his animal guide.
  • Animal Gender-Bender: Yin Cheng is described as being part peacock, despite being a female. "Peacocks" are what male peafowl are known as while female peafowl are called "peahens". She also has the characteristics of a male Indian peafowl like their long, colorful tail feathers and blue fur clearly meant to resemble the Indian peacock's plumage. In real-life, Indian peahens typically have brown plumage with a bit of green coloring around their necks and very short tails with dull-colored feathers.
  • Animal Stereotypes: She is part cat and is shown to be aloof, pampered, attention-seeking, and enjoy knocking fragile objects off tables.
  • Bond Creatures: Is meant to be Luan's animal guide, much like how Aang had the sky bison Appa and Korra had the polar bear dog Naga.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: She is a fusion between a cat and an Indian peafowl.
  • Wealth's in a Name: Her name is spelled with the Chinese characters "silver" and "castle," which fit well with her extravagant, pampered lifestyle.

    Aimee

Aimee

Kalsang's sky bison.

Families of Main Characters

    Genji's Family

Shai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shai_fire_ferrets_legend_of_genji.png
Genji's younger sister.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: In the old 2017 iteration of the comic, Shai wasn't a fan of the Fire Ferrets like her older brother, teased him over the team's losing streak, and changed which pro-bending team was her favorite based on whoever was performing the best in the scoreboards. In the rewritten 2022 version, Shai is just as much of a diehard Fire Ferrets fan as Genji.
  • Break the Cutie: Her family's apartment getting bombed, combined with having just eavesdropped on her mother and brother's heated argument, reduces her to tears.
  • Children Are Innocent: Downplayed. She seems slightly oblivious to the Fantastic Racism that sandbenders like her family face from the rest of the Earth Federation. In "The Avatar Returns: Part II", she notices that Genji's public display of sandbending earned him glares from passersby and is confused at why.
  • Fan of Underdog: Like Genji, Shai is a huge fan of the Fire Ferrets despite the team having not won a single pro-bending match in the last 17 years.
  • Girlish Pigtails: A ten-year-old girl who has her short hair styled in two low pigtails.
  • Muggle: A nonbender like her mother.
  • Oblivious Younger Sibling: Like her mother, Shai is unaware of her older brother's less-than-legal activities like participating in underground street fights and associating with sand raider gangs.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Downplayed. She isn't a pro-bender herself, but is nevertheless a diehard sports fan who loves watching televised pro-bending matches featuring the Fire Ferrets and even has a t-shirt featuring the team's mascot.

Zahra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zahra_log_c1p2_0.png
Genji and Shai's mother.
  • Muggle: Unlike her husband and son, she's a nonbender.
  • Muggle–Mage Romance: She's a nonbender married to the sandbender Khotan.
  • Parental Obliviousness: She doesn't seem to know about her son's habit of participating in the Sandbox nor his dealings with sand raiders like Malik.
  • Struggling Single Mother: Zahra had to raise her two children alone in an urban slum while also working double shifts everyday just to make ends meet. Her teenage son even had to drop out of school and accept work as a part-time mechanic in order to help her pay her bills. By the start of the story, she is on the verge of being evicted from her apartment for being late with her rent while a newly-placed government curfew prevents her from working at her night job.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: According to this Tumblr post by MackyDraws, Zahra was a traditional weaver for her tribe back before the Sandbenders were forcibly relocated to large cities by the Bao Jun administration. The tapestries in her apartment were all hand woven by her.

Khotan

Genji's missing father. Four years ago, he left his family in Jinsha and disappeared into the Si Wong Desert to reclaim his tribe's traditions.
  • All There in the Manual: Most of the information known about him is taken from Tumblr posts or the project's website.
  • Disappeared Dad: He abandoned his family about a year after they moved into Jinsha.
  • Muggle–Mage Romance: He's a sandbender who married the nonbender Zahra and had two children with her.
  • Sand Blaster: He is a sandbender and taught Genji how to sandbend when he was little.

"Gramma" Genji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gramma_genji_macky_2.png
The feisty and fearless clan matriarch of the Hami Tribe. She is Genji's namesake and paternal grandmother.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Her eyebrows are so thick that they resemble enlarged white parallelograms.
  • Eyes Always Shut: The way she's drawn makes both of her eyelids always seem closed.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Her name is also Genji despite it typically being a boy's name.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: She is much shorter than her teenage grandson with her head only reaching up to his abdomen.

    Kalsang's Family

Master Jinora

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_2_4853528126.png
The current leader of the Air Nation, caretaker of the Eastern Air Temple, and the mother of Kalsang.
  • Babies Ever After: She married Kai and had a son with him.
  • The Leader: Of the Eastern Air Temple and the Air Nation as a whole.
  • Mentor Archetype: To Nami, who she invited to come to Air Temple Island to train as her student.
  • My Beloved Smother: She is overprotective towards her son, giving him a sheltered upbringing and believing that he wasn't ready to face the real world. She still has this attitude even though Kalsang is now 18 and an airbending master in his own right.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: According to this Tumblr post, Jinora is "ridiculously cute" with her husband Kai, much to the chagrin of her son Kalsang.

Ikki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grown_up_ikki_macky.png
The caretaker of the Southern Air Temple, the aunt of Kalsang, and the mother of Songtai, Rei, Ling Ling, and Kaleo.
  • Babies Ever After: She married a man named Dae-Sung and gave birth to four children.
  • Make Some Noise: During her time in the Republic City Orchestra, she invented soundbending, a subset of airbending which involves manipulating air currents to amplify soundwaves.

Meelo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_30_8876436283_2.png
Jinora's younger brother and Kalsang's uncle. He is supposedly responsible for the Western Air Temple, but no one has seen him in a while.
  • Generation Xerox: Subverted. He tried enlisting in the United Forces like his uncle Bumi, but left in the end after deciding that life as a soldier just wasn't for him.
  • Unfit for Greatness: Before passing away, Tenzin placed Meelo in charge of the Western Air Temple where he is supposed to mentor the next generation of airbenders. Unlike his siblings, it's clear that he wasn't cut out for the job as he cared more about partying up the place than actually teaching. He rarely even stays at the temple and was quick to neglect his duties so he could go Walking the Earth.
  • Walking the Earth: According to the timeline posted on social media, Meelo journeyed around the world with his uncle Bumi about nine years after the events of The Legend of Korra. By the start of the comic, he's left the Western Air Temple to go on another globetrotting adventure.

Master Rohan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rohan_log_c1p3.png
Kalsang's uncle, an airbending master, and the caretaker of Air Temple Island.
  • Adaptational Badass: Downplayed. In canon, Katara predicted that he would become a strong airbender, but it's never revealed whether her prediction came true since his only canonical appearances were as an infant or toddler. Here, it's shown that Rohan indeed grew up to become an airbending master like his siblings.
  • Bald Mystic: He is a skilled airbender and the master of Air Temple Island who had his head shaven bald in accordance with Air Nomad tradition.
  • Blow You Away: He's a skilled airbender just like the rest of Tenzin's children.
  • O.C. Stand-in: This was inevitable given that Rohan only appeared in canon as an baby, making him a blank slate for fan writers. This webcomic's version of Rohan is described as a calm man who deeply respects Air Nomad culture and earned his arrow tattoos at a rather young age.

Songtai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/songtai_log_c1p3.png
Kalsang's cousin and best friend. Songtai was born hard of hearing, but was taught by his mother Ikki how to use soundbending to assist in his communication with others.
  • Best Friend: At the start of the story, he is Kalsang's closest friend. When he earned his airbending mastery tattoos, he actually delayed his ceremony until Kalsang also became a master so they could receive their tattoos together.
  • Blow You Away: He's an airbending prodigy like his cousin Kalsang.
  • Disability Superpower: He compensates for his auditory disability by airbending soundwaves to artificially amplify his ability to hear. This gets played with because Songtai still prefers communicating with sign language even though his powers largely negate the need for it.
  • Elective Mute: He doesn't speak and communicates using sign language even though his mastery over soundbending allows him to hear just fine and he isn't mute.
  • Make Some Noise: He has the ability to soundbend, having been taught how by his mother in order to make it easier for him to communicate with others.
  • Teen Genius: He became an airbending master at the age of fourteen. He also achieved mastery before his cousin Kalsang, even though Kalsang is a year older and was considered a prodigy.

Ling Ling and Rei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_11_2979208041.png
Ling Ling (left) and Rei (right).
Songtai's younger twin sisters and Kalsang's cousins. They're the daughters of Ikki and a man named Dae-Sung.
  • Blow You Away: Ling Ling is an airbender.
  • Coordinated Clothes: Ling Ling wears yellow shoes, light blue pants, and a red vest over a yellow-orange shirt. Her twin Rei wears red shoes, light blue pants, and a yellow-orange jacket over a red shirt.
  • Girlish Pigtails: The twelve-year-old Ling Ling has her hair tied into twin tails.
  • Making a Splash: Unlike her mother and siblings, Rei is a waterbender.
  • Master-Apprentice Chain: Rei was trained in waterbending by her great aunt Kya, who in turn was mentored by her mother Katara.
  • Recessive Super Genes: Rei inherited her waterbending from her maternal great-grandmother (Katara) despite both her mother (Ikki) and maternal grandfather (Tenzin) being airbenders.
  • Repetitive Name: One of the twins is named Ling Ling.

    Hitomi Hibana

Ambassador Hitomi Hibana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_9_3300947269.png
The Fire Nation's ambassador to the Earth Federation and Aiko's adopted mother.
  • Alliterative Name: Hitomi Hibana.
  • Blue Blood: She is a member of the Fire Nation's traditional upper-class, and has enough social standing to personally know and work with the Fire Nation royal family.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: When Hitomi sees how upset Aiko is at the news that their planned shopping trip was cancelled, she hands her a wad of cash and gives her permission to go shopping alone, not understanding that Aiko just wanted to spend time with her and didn't actually care about the shopping trip itself.
  • Family Versus Career: Averted. While she does love Aiko, Hitomi chose to prioritize her career over her family. When Aiko was younger, Hitomi regularly left her with other family members or at boarding schools because she couldn't juggle being a single mother with being an ambassador.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: Subverted. As a Fire Nation noblewoman, Hitomi has more than enough money to support her daughter's needs and ensure that she grew up surrounded by luxury. However, they still have a strained relationship because Hitomi is often too busy to spend any time with her.

    Tomkin

Tomkin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_26_9057193843.jpg
Nami's father. He's an excitable man from the Northern Water Tribe who accompanies his daughter during her first visit to Air Temple Island.
  • Big "YES!": Has this reaction when Rohan offers to introduce him to the herd of flying bison that live on Air Temple Island.
  • Muggle: He and his wife Sessi are nonbenders.
  • Palm on Cheek Pose: In "The Avatar Returns: Part III", Tomkin does the "shock and awe" variation of this pose when he sees Kalsang and Songtai gliding down from the sky in their wingsuits.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: When Nami arrives at Air Temple Island, she's quiet and withdrawn. Her father Tomkin...is not, behaving more like an energetic youngster than his teenage daughter.

    Cheng Li & Minyu

Cheng Li and Minyu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luan_s_parents_juan_and_macky_5.png
Luan's father and mother. They're an upper-middle class couple from Gaoling. After Luan was announced as the Avatar on television, Bao Jun had them moved into the Upper Ring of Ba Sing Se for their own protection. Minyu loves all the attention she gets from having her son identified as the Avatar; Cheng Li... not so much.

Earth Federation Government

    Bao Jun

President Bao Jun

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_3_6252976811.jpg
The third and current President of the Earth Federation. He is a Dai Li leader who was elected into office only a few months before Korra's death and is credited with modernizing the Earth Federation at the cost of displacing indigenous groups like the sandbenders. Bao Jun seeks to unify the huge diversity of cultures in his country into a monolithic identity. He was also the one who supposedly discovered Luan was the Avatar and is responsible for overseeing Luan's training.
  • Antagonist in Mourning: In the prologue, he appears sincerely saddened by Avatar Korra's death. On the day of Korra's funeral, he arranged for a large Memorial Statue of her to paraded in front of his palace and broadcasted Jinora's eulogy throughout Ba Sing Se. This was mere months after the Foggy Swamp Rebellion, which saw the Earth Federation's army handed a humiliating defeat by Korra and the swampbenders.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Jianzhu from The Rise of Kyoshi. Both were powerful men who ruled the Earth Kingdom and sought to use the Avatar to control the world, but wound up misidentifying the Earth Avatar. What sets these two apart is that while Jianzhu made an honest mistake, Bao Jun knew full well that the boy he found wasn't really the Avatar. Whereas Jianzhu was a Evil Mentor who put Yun through Training from Hell to make him firebend, Bao Jun made sure to train Luan at a slow pace and did his best to deter Luan from trying to practice bending the other elements. Finally, Jianzhu was a de facto ruler rather than the actual Earth King, while Bao Jun is the official leader of the Earth Federation in both practice and title.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: A younger Bao Jun appears in the prologue where he's listening to Jinora's eulogy over the radio. He would be properly introduced in the first chapter as the Earth Federation's president.
  • Earned Stripes: According to this Tumblr post, all four of the ribbons on Bao Jun's uniform were earned over the course of his military career. The green ribbon indicates that he served in the Earth Queen's army, the metal band indicates that he also served in Kuvira's army, the black-and-gold ribbon indicates that he has served in the Earth Federation's intelligence division, and the teal ribbon shows that he fought in the Foggy Swamp Rebellion.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He is one of the comic's villains and is seen proudly holding up his baby grandson in this Tumblr post. The post also states that Bao Jun is motivated by the desire to create a safer Earth Federation for his grandchildren to grow up in.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In a sharp contrast to Kuvira, he is unwilling to work with or recruit criminals.
  • Former Regime Personnel: Twice. Bao Jun was a soldier in the Earth Kingdom Army during Hou-Ting's tyrannical reign and Kuvira's army during her campaign to reunite the fractured Earth Kingdom. Following Kuvira's surrender and the dissolution of the Earth Empire, he joined the Dai Li where he eventually climbed his way to the presidency.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: He has the same man bun that he had at the start of his presidency seventeen years ago.
  • Muggle: The (admittedly outdated) concept art notes for him on Macky's Tumblr account state that he is a nonbender.
  • President Evil: He is the democratically elected leader of the Earth Federation and a ruthless expansionist responsible for the mass displacement of the sandbender tribes.
  • The Spymaster: Prior to becoming president, Bao Jun was the leader of the Dai Li, which had transitioned from a Secret Police to a Sinister Spy Agency by that point.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He is characterized as this based on the Tumblr post, being someone who is absolutely certain that his every action is for the greater good of the Earth Federation.

    Jianwu

General / President Jianwu

A military general and the second President of the Earth Federation.
  • The Ghost: Doesn't appear in the webcomic itself and is only mentioned on the comic's website.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: The whole reason that he invaded the Si Wong Desert and Foggy Swamp in the first place was because he wanted their natural resources to boost the Earth Federation's struggling economy. Re-election was also coming up and he probably assumed that being a wartime president with two victories under his belt would sway the voters. This trope gets played with since his Foggy Swamp campaign ended in a Shocking Defeat Legacy due to the intervention of Avatar Korra. Nevertheless, the Si Wong campaign was a major success and gave the Federation access to vast deposits of oil. Despite this, he ended up losing re-election to Bao Jun and his actions did little to alleviate his country's economic problems in the long run.
  • Predecessor Villain: He's Bao Jun's predecessor and is the one who started the Earth Federation's invasion of the Si Wong Desert in hopes of acquiring the desert's oil deposits.
  • President Evil: During his time as the Earth Federation's president, he used his presidential powers to wage a Resource War on the Si Wong Desert and Foggy Swamp, thereby marking the beginning of the Federation's policy of aggressive expansionism.
  • Spell My Name With An S: On the project's website, his name is spelled as "Jianwu". On the comic's timeline released on social media, his name is spelled as "Jian Wu."
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He only invaded the Si Wong Desert and Foggy Swamp because his country desperately needed access to the oil, ore, and wood on these lands in order to create more jobs and boost the economy.

    The Dai Li

The Dai Li

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/15a0e511_968b_4cc4_b0c1_668edbcd74b6.jpeg
Ba Sing Se's infamous Secret Police and cultural authority, now reformed into a Sinister Spy Agency that doubles as bodyguards for the Earth Federation president.
  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: The Dai Li agents standing in the background during the first chapter are drawn so that their wide-brimmed hats are tilted over their face and cast a shadow that covers their eyes.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: It's practically a tradition for them at this point. During the Hundred Year War, the Dai Li went from helping an Evil Chancellor run a conspiracy behind the Earth King's back to carrying out a coup engineered by the Fire Nation's princess. During Korra's era, they went back to serving the Earth Kingdom... which had fallen under the rule of a tyrannical queen. Now, the Dai Li are no longer in service to the Earth Kingdom monarchy and have switched their allegiances to the Ambiguously Evil president of the Earth Federation.
  • Hero Secret Service: They appear to have largely supplanted the White Lotus as the Avatar's protectors. Luan is escorted by the Dai Li upon his return to Ba Sing Se at the start of the comic and is even assigned a squad of Dai Li agents as his protection detail.
  • Karma Houdini: Even disregarding the mass enforced disappearances of civilian airbenders in the Earth Kingdom under Hou-Ting's regime (which, by the way, constitutes a crime against humanity according to modern-day international law), the Dai Li were nowhere to be seen when the peasantry of Ba Sing Se stormed the royal palace following Hou-Ting's assassination (which the Dai Li also failed to prevent) and threw the entire Earth Kingdom into a state of anarchy — which was exactly what the Dai Li were originally created to stop in the first place. Instead of being prosecuted for their human rights abuses or disbanded for failing their organization's foundational purpose, it seems that they just laid low for a couple of years before eventually resurfacing as one of the Earth Federation's most powerful intelligence agencies.
  • Mutant Draft Board: As part of an ancient treaty, the Dai Li can legally conscript any talented benders they find among the Ocean Folk.
  • Praetorian Guard: One of their new duties is to serve as an elite unit of bodyguards dedicated to protecting the Earth Federation President and the Avatar.

    Kah Ren

Kah Ren

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_22_4718424852.jpg
Avatar Luan's personal publicist and public relations manager. Wherever Luan goes, Kah Ren is sure to be at his side.
  • Expy: Of Effie Trinket from The Hunger Games, being a Bunny-Ears Lawyer with a flamboyant sense of fashion whose role as Luan's publicist is similar to Effie's role as Katniss's escort.
  • No Hero to His Valet: Luan is the most famous person in the world due to everyone thinking that he's the Avatar. As Luan's personal assistant, Kah Ren is one of the few people in his life that doesn't get starstruck with him and cares more about coaching him on his public image.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: She looks a lot like Marilyn Monroe, which the creators admit was intentional on their half.
  • Punny Name: Luan's publicist is a bossy blonde-haired woman named Kah Ren, which sounds a lot like Karen.

Jinsha

Lao's brother (left) and Old Man Lao (right).
A pair of mechanics who run an auto repair shop in Jinsha that Genji works at part-time.

    Quicksand

Quicksand

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/quicksand_log_c1p4.png
Quicksand is the Stage Name of a sandbender who participates in the Sandbox as one of its fighters.
  • Cheeky Mouth: During his Early-Bird Cameo, he is drawn in a way that makes it look like his mouth is coming out of his right cheek.
  • Combat Compliment: After trash talking Genji for most of their brawl, Quicksand acknowledges him as a decent sandbender before knocking him out of the ring with his Finishing Move.
Quicksand: Well then. Maybe you are ready to play with the big kids.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He can be seen amongst the disapproving crowd when Genji sandbends for Shai in "The Avatar Returns: Part II".
  • Rebel Relaxation: He is seen taking up this pose while leaning against the entrance to an alleyway during his Early-Bird Cameo.
  • Sand Blaster: He's a sandbender just everyone else who fights in the Sandbox. His specialty is in creating elongated arms made of sand which can be used to restrain his opponents or punch them from afar.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: During their brawl in the Sandbox, Quicksand sandbends elongated arms with large fists (similar to Ming-Hua's water limbs) that he uses to punch Genji out of the ring.
  • Trash Talk: Does this several times during his fight with Genji in the Sandbox, insulting him as a runt and suggesting that he go crying back to his mother.

    Malik

Malik

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_28_9189801730.jpg
A sand raider with ties to the Red Lotus. He's a friend of Genji who's always getting him into trouble.
  • Beard of Evil: He's a criminal with a goatee.
  • Delinquent Hair: Malik is a sand raider who does business with rebel groups like the Red Sands and has his hair styled in a mohawk.
  • Expy: Of Shady Shin, being a former criminal associate of a protagonist who is able to convince said protagonist to accept a job from their old gang by taking advantage of their poor financial situation.
  • Friend in the Black Market: He serves as a contact for the Red Sands and supplies them with illegal goods such as explosives and spirit-powered weaponry.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has a visible scar on his left eyebrow, as well on his left shoulder and right bicep. These indicate that he's been in his fair share of scuffles and only highlights his untrustworthy nature.
  • Sarashi: He wears a sarashi covering his waist and stomach under a sleeveless vest.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Is this for Genji. At the start of the story, Genji had distanced himself from Malik and was trying to put his sand raider days behind him. The moment Malik enters the picture, he's able to convince Genji to help him out with One Last Job by offering him extra money to pay off his rent.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Malik has bright amber eyes and is introduced as a shady person from Genji's past that Genji is hesitant to get involved with. In his first scene, he talks Genji into helping him out with a "job" that later turns out be smuggling illegal goods for a terrorist group.

    The Red Sands

Red Sand Rebels

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_52_3293972612.png
A group of rebel sandbenders who are disgruntled with the Earth Federation's unfair treatment of their people and have joined the Red Lotus in hopes driving the Federation out of the Si Wong Desert. Genji delivers some briefcases to them on behalf of Malik in "The Avatar Returns: Part IV".
  • Custom Uniform of Sexy: The female members of the Red Sands that Genji meets with in "The Avatar Returns" all wear outfits that leave their stomachs exposed.
  • Color Character: The Red Sands.
  • Delinquent Hair: Their leader is a young woman with a green mohawk.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The Red Sands leader from "The Avatar Returns" is displeased when she finds out that Malik used a teenager as a courier for his bombs and is reluctant to harm Genji despite believing that He Knows Too Much.
  • Handwraps of Awesome: The Red Sands leader that Genji delivers Malik's briefcases to in "The Avatar Returns: Part IV" has her hands and lower arms wrapped in bandages.
  • Red Is Violent: A group of Bomb-Throwing Anarchists who have "Red" in their name and are visually distinguished by their red-colored pieces of clothing.
  • Sand Blaster: All of their members are sandbenders.
  • Sarashi: The Red Sands leader that Genji meets in "The Avatar Returns" has her chest wrapped with red bandages that she wears under a sleeveless vest.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: In the first chapter, it's implied that the Red Sands were originally going to "disappear" Genji for having seen their spirit bombs, but their leader changes her mind upon discovering how young he is, remarking that he's just "a kid" and instead letting him off with a warning not to tell anyone what he saw. This is downplayed since Genji is a teenager instead of a child, and the Red Sands' leader still roughed him up a bit.

Order of the White Lotus

    Lakshmi

Grand Lotus Lakshmi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_24_6904150952.jpg
A Grand Lotus of the White Lotus. She's a bold and stubborn woman who has proudly watched over Luan ever since he was first announced as the new Avatar.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Whether or not she is aware that Avatar Luan is a phony. On one hand, it's extremely unlikely that the conspiracy would've been successful in passing Luan off as the next Avatar without the knowledge and collaboration of the White Lotus' leaders, which Lakshmi is one of. On the other hand, her character bio paints her as someone who is truly devoted to the Avatar and considers Luan a worthy successor to Korra's legacy, neither of which would be in-character for someone in on the charade.
  • Ascended Fangirl: She is a former Air Acolyte who held a deep respect for the Avatar ever since she was a child and personally admired Avatar Korra. Now she's the senior leader of the White Lotus, an organization charged with guiding and protecting Korra's successor.
  • Badass Normal: She is a nonbender who Macky Neal has described as a "total martial arts boss".
  • Large and in Charge: She stands nearly six feet tall and is the leader of the White Lotus.
  • Never Mess with Granny: A gray-haired, visibly old woman who is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat. She is even referred to as a "badass grandma" in the concept art notes.

Onyx Incorporated

    Jin Gao

Jin Gao

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meet_jin_gao.png
The founder of Onyx Incorporated, and one of Varrick's major business rivals. She is set to appear in Book 1.
  • Always Someone Better: To Varrick, much to the latter's ire. Varrick Global Industries was Always Second Best compared to Onyx Incorporated. In magazines listing the richest people in the world, Jin Gao would get the top spot while Varrick (and later his daughter Minli) would be ranked just below her.
  • The Rival: To Varrick and Asami, being their biggest corporate rival.
  • Self-Made Woman: Like Hiroshi Sato and Varrick, she comes from a humble background, having started out as an employee for Future Industries before quitting so she could build her own business empire from the ground up. From there, she used her sharp acumen for business and ingenuity to transform her fledgling Onyx Inc. into the premier energy provider of the world.
  • Start My Own: She was originally a Future Industries innovator who left to start her own energy company which quickly grew into a powerful MegaCorp rivaling her former employers.

Avatar Korra and her Companions

    In General
  • Breaking the Fellowship: According to Mako's "What Happened To" post, most of the Krew went their separate ways during the 35-year time skip. After Korra's Heroic Sacrifice, they reunited to share in their grief and provide emotional support for one another.
  • The Cameo: Asami, Bolin, Mako, and Naga all appear during the prologue mourning Korra's death at her funeral.
  • Legendary in the Sequel: All of them have achieved international recognition for the various adventures they've had with Korra alongside their own impressive individual accomplishments.
  • True Companions: Reaffirm their status as true companions when Korra's death only brings them closer together and allows them to reconnect after years of drifting apart.

    Avatar Korra

Avatar Korra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7bcfd6fc_6516_4cf2_bdb4_7c5ac0cc8f95.jpeg
Genji's immediate predecessor as the Avatar. She is a citizen of the Southern Water Tribe who led the world into an age of prosperity, justice, and reform. After defeating the Earth Empire, she helped set up the Earth Federation and later founded the Global Assembly. Her life was tragically cut short at the age of 39, resulting in a massive breakdown in global stability as people searched for her successor.
  • 100% Heroism Rating:
    • At the time of her death, she was beloved by the entire world for her accomplishments as the Avatar. Her funeral in Air Temple Island was broadcasted across all five nations with vigils being held in the capital of each nation. Even the Earth Federation, who Korra had fought against during the Foggy Swamp Rebellion just a few months before her death, showed their respects by parading a giant Memorial Statue of her throughout Ba Sing Se.
    • The swampbenders view her as a mythical hero for coming to their aid when the Earth Federation attacked and declaring the entire Foggy Swamp to be protected lands.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: Despite being a fully-trained Avatar in her prime, Korra did nothing to help the sandbender tribes when their lands were invaded and occupied by the Earth Federation. To be fair, she couldn't be there to stop the invasion as it was happening because she already had her hands full dealing with the Federation's simultaneous invasion of the Foggy Swamp. That being said, there were still a few months following the Foggy Swamp Rebellion until her death where Korra apparently made no effort to put an end to the Si Wong occupation despite having both the means (she already drove the Federation's armies out of the Foggy Swamp) and motivation (the fact that choosing between helping the sandbenders or the swampbenders was even a choice for her means she was at least sympathetic to the sandbenders' plight) to do so.
  • Big Good: Prior to her death, she was responsible for keeping the nations of the world at peace and convincing humans and spirits to peacefully coexist. The Book 1 trailer explicitly states that her death sparked a period of rising global tensions, threats of war, and a deterioration in human-spirit relations.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Just as Ba Sing Se was about to be vaporized by a spirit-powered Fantastic Nuke at least ten times as powerful as Kuvira's spirit energy cannon, Korra used her energybending to absorb the entire explosion and redirect all of it upwards into a massive Pillar of Light that could be seen from miles away. She then died on the scene from her self-inflicted Phlebotinum Overload.
  • Foil: To Kuruk, the previous Water Avatar. Like Kuruk, Korra unexpectedly died at an early age (Kuruk at age 33, Korra at age 39), plunging the world into chaos as people desperately searched for her successor, only to pick the wrong person. However, there are notable differences between the two:
    • Korra was a bisexual woman from the Southern Water Tribe while Kuruk was a straight man from the Northern Water Tribe.
    • Korra was extremely involved in international affairs with her Rogues Gallery consisting of violent revolutionaries, corrupt politicians, and various dictators and monarchs. She also helped the Earth Kingdom transition to a democracy and founded the in-universe equivalent of the U.N. By contrast, Kuruk rarely intervened in politics since he was too busy battling dark spirits.
    • When Korra died, she was viewed as The Paragon and was universally loved for her legendary accomplishments. Kuruk, on the other hand, died as a Hero with Bad Publicity who never received the proper recognition for his heroism due to playing himself up as The Hedonist in order to protect his predecessor's legacy and the Avatar's reputation as a mediator between humans and spirits.
    • Kuruk's death led to his team falling apart and ultimately turning on each other, with one teammate (Jianzhu) killing another in cold blood before becoming the Arch-Enemy of Kuruk's successor. Korra's death had the exact opposite effect on her friends, bringing them closer together than they had been in years through their shared grief.
  • Posthumous Character: Obviously she would have to be dead or Genji wouldn't be the Avatar.
  • Sadistic Choice: When the Earth Federation attacked the Si Wong Desert and Foggy Swamp at the same time, Korra only had enough time to defend one and had to choose whether to aid the sandbenders or the swampbenders. Due to the importance of the ancient World Tree at the center of the Foggy Swamp, Korra went to help the swampbenders and successfully drove the Earth Federation out of their lands. This left the sandbender tribes vulnerable and they were unable to stop the Earth Federation's military from occupying their homeland.

    Asami Sato

Asami Sato

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/older_asami_concept_art.png
The CEO of Future Industries and wife of Avatar Korra.
  • Honorary Aunt: Mako's daughter Rin considers Asami to be her favorite "aunt".
  • Tragic Keepsake: She still wears her betrothal necklace even after her wife's death.
  • Wealthy Philanthropist: She uses her wealth to support philanthropic causes around the world. When Korra was still alive, the two worked together to promote global peace and foster positive human-spirit relations.
  • Widow's Weeds: Downplayed. She wears a black dress but no veil while mourning at Korra's funeral in the prologue.

    Mako

Police Chief Mako

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_8_7964000862.png
Republic City's chief of police, the father of Rin, and one of Avatar Korra's closest friends.
  • Babies Ever After: Mako married a woman named Miri and had a daughter with her. This is downplayed by the start of the webcomic, as Mako has been divorced from his wife for sixteen years and currently maintains a shaky relationship with his daughter.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: According to Macky Neal, Mako has had a lot of late-night drinking/complaining sessions with Asami after divorcing Miri and alienating Rin.
  • Married to the Job: After Korra's death, Mako coped with his grief by burying himself in his work to the point where it destroyed his marriage and estranged his daughter. He's gotten better thanks to Asami and Bolin, and has started dating again while also actively trying to reconcile with his daughter.
  • Muggle–Mage Romance: He was married to a nonbender named Miri. Sadly, their marriage didn't last due to his workaholic nature.
  • Rank Up: In the decades following Kuvira's defeat, Mako was promoted from detective to chief of police by Lin after she retired.
  • Seriously Scruffy: He's seen better days with his hair starting to show signs of untidiness and Permastubble covering his lower jaw. This is meant to indicate that Mako is stressed and exhausted from overworking himself.
  • Workaholic: He has workaholic tendencies when it comes to his job as a police chief, which only grew worse after Korra died and ultimately fractured his marriage with Miri.

    Bolin

Bolin Beifong

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/older_bolin_revamped_concept_artwork.png
One of Avatar Korra's former companions and Mako's younger brother. Nowadays, he's a TV and mover producer for Varrick Productions Inc. He's married to Opal Beifong and is the proud father of four children with a wide variety of bending skills.
  • Alliterative Name: Bolin Beifong.
  • Ascended Fanboy: As a young man, he idolized Toph Beifong and called her his hero. Now he's married to her granddaughter and is officially part of the Beifong family.
  • Babies Ever After: Bolin married Opal and fathered four children with her.
  • Big Fun: A portly fellow who goes out of his way to visit his friends and find ways to make them smile.
  • Chubby Chef: He's a heavyset man and his character bio mentions that he spent some time exploring a career as a chef, even attending culinary school.
  • Formerly Fit: He's definitely put on some weight after settling down with Opal and no longer has the same slightly bulky Heroic Build that he had in his youth.
  • Good Parents: He's a fantastic—if not a bit too lenient—dad to his four kids and loves them all very dearly.
  • Happily Married: He seems happily married with Opal. So far, they've had four children and their marriage is still going strong after 30 years.
  • Rags to Riches: Hard to imagine that Bolin was once a penniless Street Urchin from Republic City. Now he's a successful mover producer who's married into the highly-influential and aristocratic Beifong family.
  • Renaissance Man: Bolin's tendency to have a New Job as the Plot Demands followed him into adulthood as his character bio mentions that he's had several different careers including being a politician, comedian, cook, florist, real estate developer, and, most recently, a TV producer.
  • Retired Badass: He's still a formidable earthbender who possesses the rare ability to create and control magma. However, he's put his days of going on adventures with the Krew behind him and isn't as physically active as he was in his youth.
  • Took the Wife's Name: After marrying Opal, he took on her family name and became Bolin Beifong. This was because he didn't have a surname prior to his marriage. Well that and he was really happy he could finally call Toph "grandma".

Beifong Family

    In General
  • Demoted to Extra: Unlike in ATLA and TLoK, none of the Beifong family are major characters in the webcomic.
  • Famed In-Story: The entire family is famous throughout the world for their metalbending prowess and close association with two Avatars.

    Toph Beifong

Toph Beifong

The former matriarch of the Beifong family, inventor of metalbending, and Avatar Aang's earthbending teacher.
  • But Now I Must Go: After spending a few more years reconnecting with her daughters and grandchildren in Zaofu, Toph left her family once again and disappeared into the Foggy Swamp in search of solitude and enlightenment.
  • Uncertain Doom: According to Toph's "What Happened To" post, no one has seen her since she returned to her swamp to continue living out her life in isolation. Unlike the rest of the Gaang, her death hasn't been confirmed by the webcomic's creators. However, given that she was already in her nineties when she left and Book 1 begins over twenty years after her disappearance, it's very likely that she died of old age in some forgotten area of the Foggy Swamp and they just Never Found the Body.

    Lin Beifong

Lin Beifong

The daughter of the original Toph Beifong and Republic City's former chief of police. She currently lives in Zaofu as a senior metalbending instructor.
  • Career-Ending Injury: She stubbornly held off on retiring from the Republic City police force for as long as she could, but was eventually left with no choice after receiving a bad injury during a case that left her wheelchair bound.
  • Job Mindset Inertia: Despite officially stepping down as police chief, Lin still insists that her successor Mako send her updates about the crime in Republic City.
  • Mundane Utility: Her "What Happened To" post mentions that she speeds around in her wheelchair via metalbending.
  • Personality Powers: She is an earthbender and is described as being "as stubborn as the element she bends" by her "What Happened To" profile.
  • Retired Badass: For many years, Lin tried to defy this trope and stubbornly refused to retire until a Career-Ending Injury forced her to leave the police force and accept Suyin's offer to come live with her in Zaofu. Downplayed since she refuses to be idle and helps out as a metalbending instructor for the Metal Clan, while also keeping tabs on Republic City's crime rate.

Toph's Grandchildren

    Baatar Jr.

Baatar Jr.

Suyin's eldest son and Kuvira's ex-fiancé. Prior to his defection, he was the second-in-command of the Earth Empire. For his crimes, he was sentenced to house arrest in Zaofu. After serving out his sentence, he became a university lecturer.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: He has rather bushy eyebrows compared to his siblings.
  • The First Cut Is the Deepest: It's mentioned on his "What Happened To" post that he never forgave Kuvira for nearly killing him and still has romantic commitment issues stemming from their failed engagement.
  • Former Regime Personnel: He used to be Kuvira's Number Two in the Earth Empire before becoming a college lecturer.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He's made a genuine effort to turn over a new leaf and has managed to reconcile with his family. He now gives speeches at universities around the world about the benefits and dangers of new technologies like spirit energy.

  • Babies Ever After: Had four children with Bolin after marrying him.
  • Happily Married: To Bolin. They've had four kids together and their marriage is still going strong after 30 years.
  • Mundane Utility: Opal sometimes helps out her husband Bolin with his movies by using her airbending for special effects.
  • Rock Theme Naming: She and her eldest daughter Jade are both named after gemstones.

  • Hairstyle Inertia: Wei and Wing still have the same hairstyle that they had over three decades ago with Wei's hair being parted to the left and Wing's hair being parted to the right.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Wei and Wing look nearly identical with the only real difference being that Wei has a Fu Manchu mustache while Wing has a long goatee.

Bolin's Children

    Jade

Jade Beifong

The eldest daughter of Bolin and Opal. She's rumored by various tabloids to be Avatar Luan's sweetheart.
  • The Cameo: A picture of her is featured on the front cover of the Benderteen magazine that Aiko is reading at the start of "The Avatar Returns: Part III".
  • Dishing Out Dirt: She is an earthbender.
  • Famed In-Story: She's implied to be something of a celebrity herself given her appearance on the front cover of a popular tabloid and her supposed relationship with Luan being well-known to the public.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: She has the same pale green eyes as her father.
  • The Ghost: She has yet to appear in the webcomic herself and has only been mentioned in a conversation between Aiko and Luan.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Like her father, she's also one of the few earthbenders who possess the ability to bend lava.
  • Magma Man: She is a lavabender, having inherited the ability from Bolin.
  • Odd Name Out: Like her mother, Jade is the only one out of her siblings to have a Westernized name.
  • Rock Theme Naming: Jade and her mother Opal are both named after gemstones.

    San & Samir

The youngest daughter of Bolin and Opal.
  • Ancestral Name: She is named after her great-grandmother, the original Toph Beifong.
  • Blow You Away: She's an airbender.
  • Ironic Name: Bolin named her after his idol and grandmother-in-law, Toph Beifong. Despite her namesake being a legendary earthbender and the inventor of metalbending, Toph II herself is actually an airbender.
  • Irony: Toph Beifong II is an airbender, even though she comes from a family of famous metalbenders and is directly descended from (and named after) one of history's greatest earthbenders. In-universe, air is regarded as the element opposite to earth.

Fire Nation Royal Family

    Shizuka

Fire Lord Shizuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_10_9544851524.jpg
The daughter of Izumi, the younger sister of Iroh II, and the current Fire Lord. Under her rule, the Fire Nation has worked to modernize and keep up with social changes going on in the world, but it has proven difficult with the traditional social structure of Fire Nation society.
  • Family Theme Naming: Follows her family's trend of having a "Z" sound in their names.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Izumi does indeed have a daughter in canon, though she is never named. Here, she's given the name Shizuka.
  • O.C. Stand-in: She has never made a physical appearance in canon and the only thing known about her is that she looks a lot like Izumi without her glasses. The creators of The Legend of Korra were planning to have her show up in Book 4 as Mako's new Love Interest, but the idea got scrapped to condense the season's plot. In The Legend of Genji, she appears as the new Fire Lord, doesn't seem to have any sort of romantic relationship with Mako, and is described as being a strict leader.
  • She Is the King: Her title is "Fire Lord", which is established in canon to be gender-neutral.
  • Unexpected Successor: For a long time, it was assumed that Shizuka's older brother Iroh II would become the new Fire Lord when Izumi retired. When the time finally came for Izumi to hand down the crown, Iroh II shocked everyone by dramatically rejecting his claim to the throne so he could marry his boyfriend. This left Shizuka to unexpectedly be crowned Fire Lord instead.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Shizuka is as strict with her country as she is with her family. She married Riku, a nobleman who loved parties and booze more than politics.
  • Youngest Child Wins: She becomes the new Fire Lord instead of her older brother due to the latter abdicating at the last moment.

    Kazuo

Crown Prince Kazuo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_1_2092036689.jpg
The Crown Prince of the Fire Nation and son of Fire Lord Shizuka. He's married to a woman named Natsumi and is the father of three children.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: He has very thick eyebrows that are as large as his eyes. They are especially noticeable given that he's the only member of the royal family to have these.
  • Family Theme Naming: Like most members of the Fire Nation royal family, his name has the letter "Z" in it.
  • Idle Rich: He shows little interest in his princely duties and would rather spend his time sipping tea and feeding the turtleducks in the royal garden.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Like his father before him, Kazuo doesn't care much for politics.
  • Solid Cartoon Facial Stubble: He has stubble covering the lower half of his face which is drawn as a brownish-gray shade surrounding his lips and reaching from his lower jaw to his ears.
  • Tea Is Classy: He is a prince who enjoys drinking foreign tea.

    Iroh II

Prince / General Iroh II

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_13_7523531077.jpg
The older brother of Fire Lord Shizuka, former Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, and a retired general in the United Forces. After refusing the position as Fire Lord, he married a man named Haruki and retired to a private residence on Ember Island. In the prologue, he briefly comes out of retirement to lead a vigil being held in Korra's honor in the wake of her death.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Iroh II had no known canon relationships. Here, he's gay. It's actually rather important since he abdicated his right as Izumi's heir to marry his boyfriend and left the throne to his sister, the current Fire Lord.
  • The Cameo: He appears in the prologue where he's leading a group of Fire Nation military officers in a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of the late Avatar Korra.
  • Quitting to Get Married: A rare male example. Iroh II retired from active service in the United Forces shortly before marrying his boyfriend.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Mai is his grandmother, something that was never explicitly confirmed in canon.
  • Retired Badass: He's stepped down from his position as a Four-Star Badass in the United Forces in favor of quietly retiring to Ember Island with his husband.
  • Secret Relationship: Shortly after the end of The Legend of Korra, Iroh II began dating a man named Haruki, which he hid from the public due to the stigma same-sex couples faced in the Fire Nation as a consequence of Sozin's lingering anti-LGBT laws. Also, as the crown prince of his nation, Iroh was facing increasing pressure to settle down with a wife and continue the royal bloodline. He kept his relationship with Haruki a secret for well over a decade until the time finally came for Izumi to Abdicate the Throne, at which point Iroh publicly turned down the crown and came out as gay so he could officially marry Haruki.

    Izumi

Fire Lord Izumi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/imageedit_4_4203806929.png
The daughter of Zuko and Mai, mother of Iroh II and Shizuka, and the previous Fire Lord.
  • Abdicate the Throne: Like her father, she peacefully abdicated the throne at the age of 82 and passed down the crown to her youngest daughter Shizuka. Originally, she was going to make Iroh II the next Fire Lord, but he rejected his claim to the throne in order to be with the man he loved.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: It's mentioned on the "What Happened To" posts for Zuko's family that Izumi was taught nonbending fighting techniques by her mother Mai just in case she ever needed to defend herself and couldn't use her firebending.
  • The Cameo: She has a cameo in the prologue where she is seen attending the vigil Iroh II is staging in the Fire Nation capital to mourn Avatar Korra's passing.
  • The High Queen: Izumi was a benevolent ruler who continued her father's legacy of peace for the Fire Nation throughout her rein as Fire Lord.
  • Posthumous Character: She died of old age about one year before the start of the comic.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Mai is her mother, which was something that was never explicitly confirmed in canon.

    Mai

Lady Mai

The mother of Fire Lord Izumi and grandmother of Iroh and Shizuka.
  • Action Mom: She taught Izumi how to fight in hand-to-hand combat as a precaution just in case Izumi found herself in a situation where she had to defend herself and couldn't use her firebending.
  • Posthumous Character: She is dead by the start of Book 1, having passed away during the intervening 35 years.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In canon, it's not explicitly confirmed whether or not Mai is Izumi's mother. Here, Izumi is the daughter that Mai had with Zuko after she married him.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: After marrying Zuko, Mai gained the title of Lady and helped her husband lead the Fire Nation into an era of peace while undoing a century of Sozin's propaganda.
  • Together in Death: After her death, she was buried next to Zuko underneath the Fire Nation capital.

  • Ancestral Name: He's named Iknik II after his father.
  • Books vs. Screens: He has always preferred reading books over watching his father's movers. Part of Varrick's inspiration for creating comic books (which he calls "comicals") came from wanting to get his bookworm of a son more interested in movers.
  • Bookworm: He is an avid reader who has always preferred books over movers. So far, the only image of him released by the webcomic's artists depicts him reading a book.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Varrick originally expected Iknik II to take over his company. Much to his frustration, Iknik II showed little interest in business and instead became a writer. His sister Minli on the other hand...
  • Happily Married: His character bio states that he is happily married to an unnamed partner and has a son with them.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Varrick is a flamboyant Eccentric Millionaire who thrives in the spotlight. His son Iknik II is the opposite, being a private writer who enjoys reading and drinking tea in solitude.

She was eventually handed control of Varrick Global Industries and became a successful business magnate like her father.
  • Youngest Child Wins: She is the one who inherits the family business instead of her older brother.
