     Jack Sullivan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jack_sullivan.png
Voiced By: Nick Wolfhard

  • Action Hero: Armed with his chipped baseball bat, he’s more than capable of handling himself in a fight, like with the giant monster Blarg.
  • Alone Among Families: In a quick montage, it's revealed that he's lived with a ton of foster families. None of them, however, have ever made him feel part of an actual one.
  • Amazon Chaser: Jack was already infatuated with June before the apocalypse happened. When he sees how good of a fighter and strategist she is, he falls for her even harder.
  • Break the Cutie: Thrull's betrayal causes him to go through this until he gains the trust of the worm monster he injured in the first episode of Season 2.
  • Camera Fiend: One of Jack's few possessions is his camera; he uses it to create a video log, partially to help him cope and partially to help him help gather info about the monsters.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: Jack never knew his parents and has been shunted from one foster home to another his whole life, while his current one left town without him. Jack doesn't have the same kind of baggage his friends have about missing their families because as far as he's concerned the only family he's ever had is them.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Jack, a 13-year-old, drives an SUV at crazy speeds while shouting through a megaphone. That said, he is seen to be good at it, avoiding zombies and near collisions. The others manage well enough when they need to.
    • Inverted in the books. Jack is a terrible driver, knocking into street lamps, fire hydrants, and other cars. It bothers Quint so much that he makes Jack stop driving and gives him a driving lesson.
  • Enmity with an Object: A subplot in season 3 is Jack's hatred towards the radio that the others are trying to fix, since he fears they will abandon him once they contact other human survivors.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Wears a fingerless glove on only his left hand.
  • Foster Kid: Jack grew up in the foster care system.
  • Hates Being Alone: It's shown multiple times that once Jack's part of a group he cares for, he'll desperately do what he can to make sure they still want him around, it's also because of this reason that Rezzoch was able to infect Jack in season 3, making his hallucination of his friends threaten to leave him forever if he didn't touch the 'crown'.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: He wields a broken baseball bat like it's a sword. By the way, it's broken, it also looks like one.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: It's downplayed, but being a kid who's spent most of his life bouncing from foster home to foster home has clearly instilled a deep longing for a real family in Jack.
    • While scavenging for fuel in Season 1, he sobers up immediately when he finds a family photo in one of the abandoned cars.
Jack: Oh, man. Those people in the picture... I envy them-even though they're probably zombies by now. At least they had a chance to be a family. A real family. I never had that.
    • In season 3 while the others are elated at the idea of finding their families Jack is not so keen. As the only thing closest to a real family he's ever had are the friends he's made during the apocalypse and if they find their birth families again the group will break up and he'll probably be shoved back into the foster system.
  • Imagine Spot: He frequently has these, mostly involving himself as a powerful hero or reflecting his current state of mind.
  • Only Sane Man: Has this in shades on occasion.
  • Improvisational Ingenuity: Has this in spades. Common recurring theme with the rest of the kids, but Jack can be described as an improvisational fighter.
  • Improvised Weapon: The Louisville Slicer.
  • Indy Ploy: Unlike Quint or June, he often jumps into encounters without proper planning or forethought. He has the tendency to enter into random or surprise encounters during solo missions and as a result has to improvise his fighting strategy out of necessity.
  • The Leader: Whether intentional or not, Jack often ends up taking the leadership role of the group.
  • Moment Killer: Practically every single tender moment with June is cut short with this.
  • Parental Neglect: After things go south, his current foster family just ups and leaves him behind.
  • Red Is Heroic: Jack is always seen in a three-fourths shirt with red sleeves. His sneakers are also light red.
  • Stepford Smiler: When June scolds him about his blasé approach to the apocalypse, he shrinks in on himself and says that it's his way of coping with all the sad and scary things that have been happening to them.
    • He also makes a note to edit out his emotional family moment in the gas station.
Jack: (visibly trying to perk himself up) Oh, uh, note to self: edit out all this emotional stuff later. Gotta maintain my cool action hero exterior. Boom!
  • Took a Level in Badass: He becomes much more capable after Thrull puts him through a Training from Hell montage.
  • Twice Shy: With June in the Netflix series as the season progresses.

     June Del Toro
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/june_del_toro.png

  • Action Girl: She's pretty capable of defending herself during the zombie apocalypse.
  • Blue Is Heroic: June dresses in blue. But she also owns a red sweatshirt.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Using String Theory, June becomes one while trying to figure out why the zombies are disappearing.
  • Damsel in Distress: Averted. Despite Jack's fantasy about saving the girl he has a crush on she is perfectly capable of defending herself.
    • Save for that ONE time after getting surprised by an unseen zombie while investigating the undead’s disappearance in Season 2.
  • Intrepid Reporter: June was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and she continues her journalism through the apocalypse, investigating the reason behind the missing zombies.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's cynical and snarky, but is still a good person.
  • Not So Above It All: She's pretty serious and tends to have a no-nonsense approach towards most things, yet shows a cuter, more adorable side when acting like a real kid.
  • Only Sane Woman: June has shades of this, especially at the end of “The Zombie Parade.”
  • Passionate Sports Girl: June plays lacrosse competitively and she takes the game very seriously.
  • The Smurfette Principle: While she's not the only female character to appear, June is the only female member in Jack's group of friends.
  • Tomboyish Pony Tail: June wears her hair in a ponytail.
  • Twice Shy: Same way with Jack as the series progresses.
  • Waif-Fu: June fights with a lot of acrobatics and sweeping weapon flourishes for great effect.
  • Youthful Freckles: June has these across her nose.

     Quint Baker
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/quint_baker.png
Voiced By Garland Whitt

  • Black and Nerdy: He's African-American and The Smart Guy of the group.
  • Bully and Wimp Pairing: Dirk and Quint initially have this dynamic, when the former is still pretty hostile towards Jack and Quint, and the latter is still easily intimidated by him. As the series progresses, this trope is progressively downplayed as Dirk softens up towards Quint, while Quint becomes increasingly willing to stand up for himself.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: In "The Zombie Parade", Quint secretly follows Jack in the middle of the night when he goes to collect some monster essence. When the bathrobe Quint was wearing gets destroyed, it's revealed that he was wearing nothing except purple boxers and a tank top underneath.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Quint is the most mechanically-inclined among all four protagonists, and he's the one that gives Big Mama all the extra bells and whistles. He also created several of the more advanced monster-fighting weapons that the team uses.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents were on a cruise and left him with a sitter when the Apocalypse happened, and he's holding onto the hope that they're still alive and somewhere safe out of hope that he can reunite with them eventually.
  • Shipper on Deck: Appears to be one for Jack and June in “Stay on Target.”
  • The Smart Guy: Checks everything on the list.
  • Smelly Feet Gag: In Season 3, that purple goo that's so stinky it repels zombies. That stuff is so putrid, the kids describe as even worse than Quint's socks.

     Dirk Savage
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dirk_savage.png
Voiced By Charles Demers

  • The Big Guy: His strength is a major asset for him and his friends to survive the zombie-and-monster-infested town. In fact, it's the reason Jack invites him to live with them, but only at first.
  • Book Dumb: He admits this himself, specifically stating that he hates books. He more than makes up for it with his strength and is intelligent in his own way.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: He's a hulking teen and formerly a feared bully, but in Season 2 we learn that he can sew and has enough knowledge to have set up a vegetable garden.
  • The Bully: In a flashback, Dirk is one towards Quint. In the present, he's willing to put it aside because being lonely sucks, though he's not above mocking both Quint and Jack whenever they act like dorks.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: He bullied Jack and Quint in school but after the apocalypse happens, Jack offers him a place on the team.
  • Delinquent Hair: Dirk sports a mohawk.
  • Handwraps of Awesome: A must-have for Dirk, seeing as he mostly uses his fists as a weapon.
  • Hidden Depths: He enjoys cooking, gardening, and sewing.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Dirk grows into one as he gradually matures. He softens up towards Jack and Quint pretty quickly and shows his new friends some emotional support, he starts to feel remorse over his past actions before the apocalypse, and he becomes very protective of his three best friends. Dirk will always be brash and rough around the edges, but he becomes a true friend.
  • Missing Mom: Dirk mentions that when his mom was "still around," she would tell him stories about alleged alien encounters that happened when she was a kid herself. It's not stated what happened to her.
  • Reformed Bully: As a result of him growing friendlier over time, he's given up pushing around the other kids, and the most he'll do to Jack and Quint these days is tease them about being overly nerdy.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The brash and blunt manly man to Quint's thoughtful, tentative sensitive guy.
  • Shipper on Deck: He, along with Quint, appears to be this for Jack and June in “Stay on Target.”
  • Super-Strength: He is frequently shown to be much stronger than your average kid. In the first episode, he grabs a flying monster that's several times his size by the tail and throws it through a window.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Dirk was Jack and Quint's antagonistic school bully before the start of the show. In the series proper, he still doesn't have a lot of respect for their nerdier interests, but he's learned where to draw the line and has grown to become a close friend of theirs who they can always rely on in a pinch.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: Dirk, being the muscle of the group, is this.

     Rover
Voiced By Brian Drummond (vocal effects)

  • Big Friendly Dog: He's a large dog-like monster that befriends Jack and his friends.
  • Canis Major: He's a large monster that resembles a dog in appearance and behavior.
  • Hellhound: Of a sort. He's a large dog-like inhabitant of the monster world.
  • Horse of a Different Color: He's very fast and large enough to ride so the kids put a saddle on him to do this.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's very quick and can climb and leap buildings with ease, but he's also strong enough to smash a concrete tube and can easily fight off monsters his size.
  • Team Pet: He immediately becomes loyal to to the protagonists and acts as a companion to them.

     Thrull
Voiced By Keith David

  • Evil Mentor: While initially helping the protagonists, it turns out he serves Rezzoch.
  • Fusion Dance: He merges with the Tree of Entry to attack the kids and get the key.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Downplayed; when he loses his leg in the first episode of season 2, he says it's no big deal since it will eventually grow back. However, it's not instantaneous and he's left hobbled for most of the season, and when he finally regains his foot, it's because Rezzoch uses her energy to instantly regrow the rest of it.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Thrull was using the kids the entire time to collect ingredients to summon Rezzoch. He manipulated them by feeding their egos and telling them what they needed, or wanted to hear, such as giving Jack an "ultimate quest", knowing Jack loves quests. Ironically, this comes back to bite him hard as his manipulations made them better warriors. For example, him helping Quint improved his confidence and turned him into a more capable fighter.
  • Plant Person: He becomes one after his Fusion Dance with the Tree of Entry.
  • Skeletons in the Coat Closet: His outfit has some skulls and other bones on it as decoration; something Jack points out the first time they meet Thrull.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: He acts concerned with the kids and does help them, but it was all for his own ends to summon Rezzoch. He plans on using them to feed Rezzoch after she emerges on Earth.

     Bardle
Voiced By Mark Hamill

  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's fairly sinister looking and has a raspy voice but he's actually the one to come to the kids' aid after they're trapped by Thrull.
  • Magic Knight: He's skilled with a sword but he's also able to use magic. In season 3, he abandons his sword and uses magic in fights.
  • Mysterious Watcher: He starts out as this, watching the protagonists and only appearing in the background of pictures they've taken.
  • The Stoic: Compared to the other monsters, he is much more reserved; however he is shown to be Not So Above It All and has his moments, as even he was surprised that Wormongulus had decided to help the kids.

     Skaelka

  • Ax-Crazy: A toned down example. She is fond of battle and constantly mentions her liking of decapitating enemies, but she is rational.
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: Fittingly with her Ax-Crazy tendencies, she wields a giant axe.
  • Lizard Folk: She appears to be a humanoid lizard person, as she has a lizard like tail, mixed with dragon-like features.

     Rezzoch
Voiced By Rosario Dawson

  • Big Bad: Rezzoch is this. Her awakening caused the rifts to open and the monsters, zombie virus, and killer plants to appear.
  • Body Horror: Has this when inhabiting the body of the King Wretch. Not only is the body decaying from the inside out, to communicate it literally opens the creature's rib cage.
  • Demonic Possession: In season 3, she spends the entire season possessing a Wretch, and plans for Jack to become her next host.
  • Planet Eater: She consumes the inhabitants of the worlds that she visits.
  • You Have Failed Me: She says this word for word to Thrull.
