Main Characters
Minoru Utsugi / Isolator
The main male protagonist of the series, a sixteen-year-old high school student who lives with his adopted sister Norie Yoshimizu. Since a tragic childhood incident he has wished for only one thing: solitude. His wish is granted when an alien gives him the power of isolation- granting him a powerful shell around his body, cutting him off from the rest of world.
- Anti-Hero: He is never outright malicious, but he does wish for absolute solitude, meaning that for all his good intentions he is ultimately apathetic to the lives of those around him and when strangers die he often can’t muster feelings of grief.
- Barrier Warrior: Minoru's abilities grants him an unbreakable barrier that surrounds his body and rejects everything but visible light. Even nuclear radiation!
- Dark and Troubled Past: When he was eight years old, his parents and older sister were killed during a home invasion. During the incident he and his older sister were hiding in the pantry when she put him in a small storage space and left to call the police. While out of the pantry, his sister was also killed, and Minoru feels that it was somehow his fault as he sat in the dark and did nothing.
- Death Seeker: A bit early on. He received his Third Eye when he was considering throwing himself in the river and rejoining his dead family and by the end of Volume 1 when he joins the S.F.D. he wonders if his family would forgive him if he were to die nobly in battle protecting someone and rejoin them.
- Happily Adopted: By his cousin Norie Yoshimizu, one of the few people he still cares for. Technically by her father, who died pre-series; however Norie was always his main caregiver, and the adoption was definitely her idea.
- Heroic BSoD: If you read the first couple of books carefully, Minoru goes through minute-long versions of this on a daily basis, and has for years. They only start to ease after he joins the Jet Eyes organization.
- Leave Me Alone!: What he wants because of Survivor Guilt. Or so he thinks.
- My Greatest Failure: As a result of his Survivor Guilt he has constantly blamed himself for the death of his family.
- Nice Guy: For all his psychological hangups, he’s a sweet and kindhearted boy who doesn't wish to cause others trouble.
- Personality Powers: Minoru believes his shield power comes from his own craving for isolation from other people. In book 3 he realizes that his shield is actually the personification of his older sister's dying wish: for Minoru to be safe and shielded from harm. This is why Minoru can bring people he wants to protect inside his shield.
- Prematurely Grey-Haired: His hair has lost the color that he was born with since the night he lost his family.
- Real Men Cook: A capable cook in his own right, though he's usually more concerned with recipes that can be made quickly and have enough volume.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, his senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
- Survivor Guilt: His main issue.
- Terrible Artist: He's not exactly a talented artist at least with humans.
- Oli-V: "You call that a human?! It looks a hobgoblin or something to me!"
Yumiko Azu / Accelerator
A girl who belongs to an organization known as Specialized Forces Division that specializes in dealing with Ruby Eyes. She first meets Minoru when she was hunting the Biter who Minoru who was fighting to protect Tomomi. Her code name, Accelerator, comes from her ability to accelerate her body (and anything her body is connected to, like her clothing or motorbike) allowing her to move faster than the speed of the sound.
- Always Second Best: Has often felt this way in comparison with Suu, who is considered more powerful.
- Badass Biker: Owns and rides a MV Agusta F3 800 motorcycle that boasts 148 horsepower. She can also use her Accelerator power on the bike while she's driving it.
- Dark and Troubled Past: When she was in middle school a group of upperclassmen from her track team used wooden swords and metal pipes to beat her until they shattered her knee, simply because she was faster than them and apparently had 'a bad attitude'. Given Yumiko's competitive and unapologetic nature, that might just mean she wasn't sorry about being better than them, or properly deferential about it.
- Hair Color Dissonance: In text her hair is generally described as being black while the novel's colored illustrations render it blue.
- Personality Powers: Her powers are obviously connected to her longing to be able to run again.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, her senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
- Super-Speed: In a sense, Yumiko's ability allows her to amplify her ability to accelerate and whatever she’s in contact with.
Specialized Forces Division / SFD
Officially known as the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare's Industrial Safety and Health Department's Specialized Forces Division. The Specialized Forces Division, or SFD, is an organization dedicated to hunting down and subduing or neutralizing Ruby Eyes.
Denjirou “DD” Daimon / Searcher
Code named Searcher, Denjirou “DD” Daimon is a member of the SFD.
- Everything Sensor: His Third eye abilities are primarily sensory in nature. He can detect any Ruby or Jet Eye Host within a certain radius.
- Irony: DD is such a good cook that his parents think he's studying at a culinary school. However, Yumiko and Riri treat Minoru as the Supreme Chef, not him, because DD takes so long to cook anything that they usually gave up and got something else to satisfy their hunger.
- Team Chef: Served this role himself and had the SFD headquarters kitchen well fitted out prior to Minoru's joining.
Riri Isa / Speculator
Code named Speculator, Riri Isa is the deputy chief and strategic commander of the SFD. She is also currently a fourth-year elementary school student. Her Third Eye ability grants her the ability to answer any question asked that has a concrete answer (no one's actually tried to ask her something like 'what's the meaning of life' on-page, though, so philosophical questions might not be off the table, either).
- Brainy Brunette: A very bright young girl with brown hair.
- The Nicknamer: Gives all the members of SFD cute nicknames like Mikkun for Minoru and Yukko for Yumiko.
- The Professor: Her nickname, given her ability to solve any question that has an answer.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, her senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
- Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: literally knowing all the answers robbed her of any wonder looking at the world, and gave her low-grade depression. Riri credits Minoru for showing her their are still questions she can't answer in the world, and there are still things to wonder about.
- Wise Beyond Their Years: In spite of her age, her ability to solve almost any question that has an answer has given her quite a bit perspective on life.
Oliver Saito / Divider
Code named Divider, Oliver "Oli-V" Saito is a male high school student and member of the SFD.
- Absurdly Sharp Blade: His Division ability allows him to nullify the inter-molecular forces within an object along a certain plane thus allowing him to be able to cut through anything as long as he uses a sharp object like a sword or even an ice pick.
- But Not Too Foreign: Half Japanese and half French.
- Flaming Sword: In order to help combat Trancer, one of his swords was modified to allow it to catch flame after coating itself in Trioxane while its sheath could be used to reapply the combustion agent.
- Most Gamers Are Male: Oli-V is passionate about video games, and it's his main past time outside school or the SFD's work.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, his senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
Suu Komura / Refractor
Code named Refractor and called the strongest Jet Eye user. Suu is a young woman with the psychic ability to see the sight lines of other people, and whose Jet Eye allows her to become invisible.
- Aura Vision: Her ESP works like this.
- Blessed with Suck: She considers both her looks and ESP as this. Suu is uncommonly lovely (Yumiko refers to her as 'ridiculously pretty'), and ever since puberty it's inspired hurtful jealousy from women and unwelcome lust from men even her own parents. Which her ESP forces her to see excruciatingly clearly.
- Commonality Connection: Like Minoru, she's quite shy and the two of them develop a mutual understanding as a result.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Ever since she was young she has had the ability to see the sight lines of other people, this allowed her to see how people perceive her through their sight lines. Unfortunately as she grew older she began to see that this ability wasn't all that pleasant as she watched as the perception of those around changed, and she watched as her mother's perception went from a platonic love (yellow) to jealousy and her father's sight line changed from "yellow" (affectionate in a platonic way) to "red" (lustful). This left her traumatized and afraid of other people’s gazes.
- Driven to Suicide: Tells Minoru matter-of-factly that she was seriously contemplating suicide when her Jet Eye ability kicked in.
- Invisibility: Her Jet Eye allows her to become invisible by refracting visible light in all directions.
- Living Emotional Crutch: Suu's older brother, who gave her pure love and unconditional support, was the only thing that kept her from going over the edge years ago.
- Personality Powers: Suu hated her looks, and how other people felt towards her when they saw her, thanks to her ESP. Now no one can see her, she doesn't have to suffer from their perceptions of her.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, her senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
- Shrinking Violet: She has a shy and retiring personality.
Ruby Eyes
Hikaru Takaesu / The Biter
The first Ruby Eye encountered in the series. A famous food critic turned cannibal whose abilities gave him teeth that could bite through anything.- Adaptational Name Change: His original name in the web novel was Koutaro Arita.
- Abusive Parents: See Freudian Excuse.
- Arc Villain: The central antagonist and secondary focus character of the first volume of the series.
- Starter Villain: Making him this, as he is the first Ruby Eye seen.
- Freudian Excuse: In spades. His mother was a famous food educator and critic, as well as a very controlling and abusive parent who placed high standards on him as a child, often parading him around with her as living proof of how great her theories and parenting were. Even going so far as to blame him for absorbing his twin while she was still pregnant. All the while she used her celebrity, wealth and influence to cover up her abuse of him (and quite possibly prevent his father from seeing him after their divorce). Eventually the stress she placed on Hikaru caused him to develop a habit of grinding his teeth to the point he developed dental attrition, causing great pain that ultimately lead to his grades slipping, and when she found out about this, she (falsely) accused him of sneaking candy behind her back and in a rage she pulled out all his teeth with pliers. Ultimately leading to him killing her once he graduated from college.
- Gratuitous Italian: Occasionally uses Italian words in his speech like referring to Minoru as ragazzo.
- I'm a Humanitarian: Since his contact with his Third Eye he went from being a simple food critic to a vicious cannibal who preys on human flesh and bone seeing himself as a predator above humanity.
- Kick the Dog: Years before the series started, Hikaru murdered his mother. It's very hard to argue that she didn't have it coming. Or that he hadn't earned the right to do so from his pain and suffering.
- Personality Powers: His ability to bite through anything comes not only from being a food critic, but possessing false teeth since early adolescence thanks to his mother's abuse, which he feels constantly humiliated by. He's also a huge fan of sharks (see Shark Man below).
- Pride: He wants to prove that his jaws can chew through anything and that he's the apex predator, which is why he attempts to bite Minoru while the latter has his barrier up rather than waiting out the barrier. In their final confrontation, he converts his entire body into muscle, including his brain, in a failed attempt to break the barrier, getting him killed.
- Sharp-Dressed Man: In his regular life, usually wearing designer labels and/or bespoke. He considers wearing department store sports clothing on his hunts to be a disguise.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, his senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human. His sense of smell in particular enables him to detect a potential victim's health and therefore quality as food.
- Shark Man: His ability is used to convert parts of and even his entire head into those of several types of sharks including a Megalodon.
- Your Head A-Splode: At the end of Volume 1. His ability converts every ounce of his body into extra muscle, but it still fails to get through Minoru's barrier no matter how hard The Biter tries until it gets this trope as a result.
Yousuke Nakakubo / Igniter
A Ruby Eye and former owner of a landscaping business whose Ruby Eye granted him the ability to manipulate oxygen.- Bungled Suicide: He attempted collective suicide by driving his car with his family still inside after his landscaping company was faced with insolvency. But he failed as he could not bear the thought of drowning and dying, and escaped leaving his wife and child, who had already died, behind at the bottom of the sea.
- Dead Person Impersonation: He took on the name of Ayato Suka,a former employee who he sought out and killed for betraying him and bringing his company to ruin.
- Having a Blast: One application of his ability. He can cause oxyhydrogen explosions by concentrating oxygen and hydrogen around a certain point, which explodes when in contact with a fuel source and how he earned his code name.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, his senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
Stinger
A Ruby Eye who hunts both Jet Eyes and Ruby Eyes. His identity and motives are unknown.- Animal-Themed Superbeing: His abilities revolve around insects, from spinebugs which can bore into a person's head and kill to bugs capable of tracking.
- The Faceless: Wears a red hooded coat that completely obscures their identity shrouding their face in total darkness.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, his senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
The Syndicate
An organization created by a group of Ruby Eyes about ten days after the Third Eyes first appeared in Tokyo. It is the main organization of Ruby Eyes that the SFD faces off against and aims to wipe out the entire human race.Liquidizer
A Ruby Eye and high ranking member of the Syndicate with the ability to manipulate any solid material and turn it into a liquid.- The Dragon: seems to be the main liaison between the command structure of the Syndicate and the various free-floating Ruby Eyes in the field, and the main agent sent to assess and recruit Ruby Eyes not yet a part of the Syndicate.
- Hidden Depths: apparently is the one who realized that the reason why all the Ruby Eyes are bad guys is because the Ruby Eyes were drawn only to people who already wanted to destroy the world, at least on some level.
- Master of Disguise: While under observation by Minoru and Suu, capably transforms herself from a mid-twenties office lady to a high school student, simply by a change of clothes, hairstyle, and makeup.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, her senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
Ryuu Mikawa / Trancer
A young Ruby Eye who use to be Liquidizer's apprentice. His Ruby Eye grants him the ability to manipulate the vibration of water molecules.- An Ice Person: An application of his ability allowing him to freeze water instantly.
- Super-Senses: As with all Third eye users, his senses are enhanced beyond that of a normal human.
Other
Tomomi Minowa
A girl that once attended the same middle school as Minoru and currently in the same class in high school. She is a member of the track club and started to get to know him when the met on a morning jog.
- Boyish Short Hair: A member of the Yoshiki High track team and has short hair befitting her athletics.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Her memory of her encounter with the Biter and related events is erased.
- Passionate Sports Girl: She's been a track runner since middle school even making nationals during her last year in middle school and very much loves running.
Norie Yoshimizu
Minoru's stepsister who adopted him following the death of his family.
- Adoptive Peer Parent: Began taking care of the then eight year old Minoru when she was 21 years old.
- Cool Big Sis: While she is Minoru's adoptive guardian, she's very much this.
- Nice Girl: She's a genuinely sweet, bright and cheerful woman.
- Promotion to Parent: Became Minoru's primary caregiver shortly after the loss of his family.
