• Abusive Parents: Her birth father is emotionally abusive and neglectful to her, and he constantly blames her for his problems. And it's coming from her fifth foster father who wasn't kind to Laurel, he's physically, sexually, and emotionally abused her, also it's implied that he raped her multiple times.
• All of the Other Reindeer: In her background when she was in elementary school, all of the kids with upper and middle class income made fun of her for living a poor environment at her house and doesn't know who her mother is, and her teachers scolded her for wearing the same clothes everyday. Even when she attends Lake Hills High, which is a affluent school in her first day of sophomore year, people knew who Laurel is, so everyone looked down on her, made fun of her for being different and living in the different foster homes, and she was ignored and bullied by the student body, even Rebecca.
• Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Averted. She's a Nice Girl, but has some occasional traits on her with dark brown hair.
• Brainy Brunette: Even when she has dyslexia, has dark brown hair and has good grades at her school.
• Butch Lesbian: Wears grunge, aloof, punk and dark clothing, and pretty much a lesbian.
• Cool Big Sis: She has no conflict with Genova and her younger foster siblings at all.
• Dark and Troubled Past: Her mother died, and her father is criminal and a neglectful father. Social services took Laurel away into a foster care system, she was swap into several foster homes and some foster parents are too difficult to be with. She was raped multiple times by her fifth foster father after she was accused of throwing his liqour away, and she was sent to juvenile hall for the attempted murder of her foster father.
• Extracurricular Enthusiast: In the later episodes, she joins the LGBQT Alliance club, Student Council and has determined to be in a feminist club.
• Foster Kid: Has been one her whole life
• Go-Getter Girl: Has good grades, always keep up the work, tutors them and tries to keep up with the effort in student council and to be class president.
• Happily Adopted: Unlike any other fosters families, she's in good hands with the Holmes.
• Hollywood Atheist: Has shown to have a no faith in god, and she would rather dig in instead of saying grace at dinner time.
• Junkie Parent: Has one of these, which is her mother.
• Long-Lost Relative: She doesn't know Genova too, until she came into the Holmes family and realized Genova is her younger half sister.
• Missing Mom: Her mother died of childbirth, so Laurel blamed herself for her death.
• Nice Girl: From what we seen of her, she has a aloof attitude, despite her sad background, she's pretty friendly, oftenly kind, a sweetheart and the definitely the most nicest girls in the holmes family and on the book.
• Parental Abandonment: Her father had committed any crimes and left her in house for 24/7. But this time, he got arrested and sent to the prison for life, and he had never see Laurel Again.
• Missing Mom: Her mother died when Laurel was born.
• Rape as Drama: She was sexually assaulted by her foster father at 12.
• Single Girl Seeks Most Popular Guy: Subverted. At first, she seems to take a liking of him, but when Mike tries to make a move on her, she didn't reciprocate his feelings and told him she's a lesbian.

• Expy: Just like Kim. She's like Lena Adams Fosters from ''The Fosters, she's a mixed race, fully lesbian, a part time lawyer, full time as a staff member at Lake Hills High school, and loves her foster kids so much.
• Lipstick Lesbian: Is pretty feminine, stylish, and a beautiful lesbian lawyer.
• Sassy Black Women: Has her sassy and badass moments, but don't piss her off.

• Dumb Blonde: Inverted. She's not dumb as everyone think she is, she's way too level-headed and mentioned that she has a soccer scholarship back in college.
• Expy: Played with. She's like a younger verison of Stef Adams Fosters from The Fosters , she has blonde hair, loving her foster kids, used to have ex-husband and she's pretty bisexual.
• Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She's obsessed with makeup and fashion, but she enjoys soccer and other sports too.

• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She could be mean, bossy, rude and blunt at times, but she's still a good person who cares about her friends, family and her twin sister.
• Lovable Alpha Bitch: Karolina is the most popular girl in Lake Hills High School, and a president of the fashion club. She's also in the dance team, and dated some of the guys in school. She could be judgmental, rude, self-absorbed and plain shallow, but she's actually fun, considerate, kind and always welcoming to everyone in school, including to Laurel.
• Really Gets Around: Has been sleeping around with guys, and Karen was grossed out by this.
• Sibling Yin-Yang: She's a popular fun girl contrast to her twin sister, Karen.

• Beware the Nice Ones: Alanna is a good person, she does this to both Maddy and Rebecca when they're bullying Laurel and Eve.
• Brainy Brunette: Is a smart girl with dark brown hair, and is a stereotypical Go-Getter Girl.
• Go-Getter Girl: She excels of all of her studies, she engages in school plays, the debate team, feminist club, was part of the student council, and was quite popular.
• Nice Girl: She's good, sweet, kind and loyal girls in the friend group.
• Token Good Teammate: Of the friend group, who has a heart.
• Twofer Token Minority: Alanna is hispanic and she's a trans-female.

• Popular Is Evil: Rebecca and Madeline, they're two nasty Alpha Bitches who took a control of this school and makes the unpopular kids miserable.
• School Idol: The most popular kids are referred to and see them as this.
• Teens Are Monsters: Except for Mike, most of the popular kids are getting their ways of making the unpopular kids a living hell.

• Absurdly Powerful Student Council: This girl took over the school, it's no wonder most of the student body finds her controlling.
• Alpha Bitch: Rebecca Hitchens is beautiful, mean, wealthy, vain and the most popular girls in Lake Hills High School. She's the cheer captain of the Lake Hills, a member of the student council, class president, has her Girl Posse follow her around and order things for her. Yup, she's the antagonist popular student who depicted on bullying poor people and other students especially Eve and Laurel, and rules the school with her iron fist. Even Nessa states, "Most people love her because she's rich and all that, and most people hate her because she's a bully and likes to abuse the school's power."
• All Guys Want Cheerleaders: Oh yeah, numerous male students had a crush on her because she is described as a gorgeous and desirable cheerleader at Lake Hills High.
• Brainy Brunette: Averted. She's a brunette, she is just plain dumb and has several moments to share her brain.
• The Bully: Occasionally to the outcasts, and to Eve. Rebecca is to Laurel, she is the first target of the queen bee.
• Childhood Friend: with Madeline
• Control Freak: Bosses people around in her cheer squad, make her friends order things for her and takes a control of the school.
• Cruel Cheerleader: She's the cheer captain of the Lake Hills, she nasty, vapid and bosses people around in her own cheerleading squad. It all starts from episode one, when she rejected two girls at the cheer tryouts and said they were too bland and has no spirit.
• Daddy's Girl: Her and her friend had a great relationship.
• The Ditz: Oh God, she's the stupidest side character of the show.
• Even Evil Has Standards: She claims that Madeline is even worse than her.
  • Despite being a bully to Laurel, she wouldn't want to make fun of her father for being in jail and her dead mother, so she thinks it's not funny anymore. And she wouldn't want to make fun of her rape backstory, like Madeline Does.
• Expy: She's a mixed of Paige Michalchuk from Degrassi: The Next Generation, Sadie Saxton from Awkward., and Cheryl Blossom from Riverdale. She's a popular girl who is wealthy, spoiled, snobby, is head cheerleader, has a Girl Posse and but she's not much of a bad person.
• Girl Posse: Has three girls in her popular clique, they called themselves the "The Beckys."
• Freudian Excuse: was raised by an nasty, cold-hearted and snobby mother who raised her to be classist and perfect.
• Hate Sink: She's a classist, manipulative and privileged bitch who think she's owns the world, she's the only antagonist who picks on Laurel for her poor social status and has no redeeming qualities at all. Despite her Pet the Dog Moments, she's still a bitch. Subverted in the fourth season.
• Hypocrite: Rebecca slut shames Laurel for having sex with a man and accuses her for flirting with her boyfriend, she does a lot promiscuity.
  • She being totally homophobic to Laurel, when she shows some support to gay men.
• Jerkass: She's mean, vain, vapid, manipulative, nasty, and a selfish fuck who makes Laurel's life miserable and demeans her every single time.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rebecca is such a bitch and a bullying Alpha Bitch, but she does care about her boyfriend and her friends as well, Unlike Madeline, she could be moral and does have soft moments to people. Well in Season four, she grew kind of better and starts becoming a little kinder to Rebecca.
• Lack of Empathy: She doesn't care if Rebecca has a shitty background and life, she's enjoys making her suffer. Although it died down after three seasons.
• Minor Major Character: Her role is just a high school mean popular girl, but has an action to make lower income students and the outcasts feel like crap. So yeah.
• Politically Incorrect Villain: Not only she's a classist, she's also homophobic to lesbians. But she does have support for gay men.
• Privileged Rival: Yup, she's a classist Alpha Bitch who is the worst rival to Laurel.
• Put on a Bus: Leaves at the end of season four, and her final appearance when she shows up on graduation.
• Really Gets Around: Before she met Vincent, she hooks up with a lot guys even even college guys.
• Rich Bitch: She's pretty wealthy and looks down people who are poor and has jobs, well thanks to her father that he is a mayor of the town of Lake Hills.
• School Idol: And God knows what, she's the most popular of all students in Lake Hills High.
• Spoiled Brat: Oh my god, this is what she do all the time.
• Student Council President: Damn right, people thinks she's controlling the school.
• Took a Level in Kindness: In season 4, While being an Resident's Alpha Bitch, she became less spoiled, classist and bitchy.
• Token Evil Teammate: To the Lake Hills Cheerleaders, and the student council that she took a lead in.

Madeline Lopez

• Alpha Bitch: Madeline is waaay worse than Rebecca, she's popular, stupid, nasty, hateful and was spoiled by her rich parents. Bullying other students and put all of them down, she makes fun of Laurel of her dead mother, her rape backstory and her father being in prison. She's also bribed her teachers to raise a grade, and she's a co captain of the Lake Hills Cheer Squad. Even she ruthlessly calls Laurel "charity case" because she thinks the foster parents only used her for money.
• Arch-Enemy: To Laurel, she treats her like a loser.
• The Bully: Along with Rebecca, she joins make Laurel's life so miserable, so cruel.
• Childhood Friends: with Rebecca.
• Cruel Cheerleader: Is Co-Captain of the Lake Hills Cheer squuad, and is very bitchy.
• The Ditz: Just like her friend, Rebecca.
• Dumb Blonde: Has platinum blonde, and is a stupid human being.
• The Friend Nobody Likes: Madeline is to the popular clique, Rebecca finds her horrible, and the whole girl posse secretly disliked her.
• Girl Posse: She hangs out with Rebecca and her friends.
• Green-Eyed Monster: She is jealous of Ximena when she has more votes than her on election day, and also jealous of her because she's dating Damon.
• Hate Sink: Even worse than Rebecca, she's nothing spoiled rotten teenager who think she's better than anyone else in this school, and likes making Rebecca feel like she's nothing.
• Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: There's nothing reliable about her, she's still an awful human being with no redeeming qualities and has bad traits of herself.
• Lack of Empathy: She's unremorse and shows no sympathy to Laurel at all, and makes her life a living hell.
• Kick the Dog: Sends nude photos of Ximena to the whole school and publicly humiliates her.
• Popular Is Dumb: She's popular, but does poorly in her schoolwork and also bribed her teachers to raise a grade. And the worst part is, she even bought her grades.
• Rich Bitch: Along with Rebecca, she's wealthy, ruthless and classist.
• Spicy Latina: Is very badass, cold-blodded and pretty to boot.
• White Hair, Black Heart: Blonde and very a nasty human.
• Valley Girl: It wouldn't have this character without it, so she's blonde, stupid and rich.

• Beta Bitch: Mostly Sadie and Olivia, although they back it up with Rebecca and Madeline.
• Everyone Has Standards: They wouldn't make fun of Laurel's dead mom and her father being a criminal, they were disturbed by Madeline's antics.
• Girl Posse: They were part of Rebecca's mean girl group, and followed her command.
• Pom-Pom Girl: Sadie and Olivia, they have some bitchy traits but they seem to be good in the cheer squad.
• The Quiet One: Paige, she turns out to be the Innocent Beta Bitch at all.
• Those Three Girls: They almost never separated from each other most of the scenes with Rebecca.

• Big Man on Campus: Mike is an athlete, is in the football team along with his mates, he's the most popular guy in school, dating the most popular girl in Lake Hills High, he seems to be respected by everyone in school, he's quite honest and a benevolent person
• Lovable Jock: He's in the football team, and he's absolute sweetheart.
• Nice Guy: Unlike his girlfriend and his friends from the popular clique, he's pretty kind, mature, polite and he evens averts with Jerk Jock type when him and his friends were bullying someone. Although, even Laurel doesn't reciprocate his feelings, he still wishes her the best.
• Token Good Teammate: In his friend group.

Francesa Lakefield

• Academic Alpha Bitch: Francesa is the smartest girl in school and excels all of her classes, is part of a student council member and in a debate team, she's also sneaky, mean and competitive towards Laurel. She has some Alpha Bitch traits when it comes to her rival, Laurel. But it's also revealed that isn't popular at all.
• Evil Redhead: Is a ginger girl, and she's really mean.
• Go-Getter Girl: Is hard-working girl, likes to create stuff for the campaign, running for class president as her mother encourage her to be, making her parents proud and loves decorating stuff for school events.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She could be pretty competitive, rude and selfish, but she tries to do right thing for everything and wants everyone for the best, although she loses some things, but still accepts her defeat.
• No Social Skills: She doesn't have many friends, and she's caught up of her studies because of it.
• Obsessed with Perfect Attendance: Can't this girl miss one school day already!

Ximena Rojas

• All of the Other Reindeer: A year before a prior of the book, the whole school seems to dislike Ximena only after her nude photo was leaked by the entire school, all thanks to Madeline. After her nude photos were leaked during her student council speech, she lost her friends, the parents started to resent her, and everyone in school were laughing, shunning and looking down at her.
• Class Princess: before her popularity ended, she was beautiful, popular, very sweet person who is helpful, caring, and everyone respected her.
• Fallen Princess: She used to have everything, her popularity, being in a relationship with Damon, is respected by everyone in the dance team and having her hopes up to become president. Until Madeline sent her nude photos to the entire, she lost her friends, the parents hated her, gotten kicked off the dance team, and became a depressed social pariah.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She could be aloof, cold, disdain and blunt. At times, she could be friendly, kind and warm to others around, especially with Laurel.
• Loners Are Freaks: She was considered a loser in school because of it.
• Go-Getter Girl: She was this before the events had happened to her.
• Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She went from lovely, fun popular Genki Girl before the nudes were sent to the school, she became sad, depressed introverted loner.

• Jerkass: Is rude and a snobby person. Also, She puts Genova down a lot.

• Small Role, Big Impact: Melodie is portrayed as a basic rich spoiled white teenager, but has a big impact when it comes to Genova and couldn't give a shit about her pain.

• Valley Girl: She is a spoiled wealthy white girl in the Swensons's House, but she's not very smart.

• Black Sheep: Hates the Swenson family, she's more into poverty and saving lives than being in a beautiful elite, also she's doesn't fit in here and even her sister treats her differently.
• Long-Lost Relative: She doesn't know Laurel until she came into Holmes family and realizes that Laurel is her half older sister.
• The Unfavorite: Harper and Steven were this to Genova, they couldn't stand her gloominess and being unmotivated, so that's why they chose their daughter, Melodie.

Otis Blaine

• Abusive Parents: Is emotionally abusive and neglectful to his daughter Laurel, and blames it on Laurel for everything.
• Alcoholic Parent: Yeah well this man drinks a lot.
• Freudian Excuse: His wife died because of childbirth and blamed Laurel for her death, so he starting doing bad things to make his pain go away.
• Hate Sink: Blaming your daughter for your wife's death? Committing crimes? Abandoned your younger daughter? There's nothing sympathetic about him when he gets arrested, so he's unlikable ass.
• Lower-Class Lout: He's poor and a entitled asshole.
• Maternal Death? Blame the Child!: Yup, he's only doing this out of a rage.
• Parental Neglect: He spends too much time committing crimes, does a lot drinking and did drugs than looking out for his daughter and spending a lot time with her.
• Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He used to be a good guy and a good husband until his wife's death.

• Death By Child Birth: She died after giving birth to her baby daughter Laurel.
• Missing Mom: To Laurel.
