Characters / The Dark Age New Resistance

Go To

After Bloods' ascension to "god" status, Matthew Schueren was able to knock him into a coma. It was at this time that the Resistance was reformed by best friends Boss and Ryu. Dubbed the New Resistance, their first task was to take out Alias Aokawa.

After the deaths of Boss and Ryu, Logan became the New Resistance's leader.

    New Resistance Leader and Officers

Boss Stevens and Hotaru "Ryu" Fukuda

The two founders of the New Resistance. Boss is a lax, weird, and easygoing guy, while Ryu is a little more serious and business-like.

  • Baleful Polymorph: Boss can transform his enemies into...pinecone trees.
  • Berserk Button: For Ryu - do NOT hurt Boss. And vice versa.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Boss. He walks around in red pajamas, wears pinecone hats, plays "Space Land" Mario Party music in their "Space Base" (which, by the way, needs to be capitalized according to him). It's hard for him to become serious, really. Ryu as well, to a lesser extent.
  • Embarrassing First Name: "Hotaru" is usually a girls' name.
  • Enhanced Punch: Ryu's magic-powered explosion punches and kicks.
  • Green Thumb: Boss.
  • Ki Attacks: Ryu's main powers revolve around him compressing his magical energy into his punches and kicks; thus creating a magical explosion when he hits someone.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: Ryu the Straight Man, Boss the Wise Guy.
  • Sticky Situation: Boss can create this by throwing sap-soaked pinecones onto the ground. When the pinecones sense movement, they will rotate around, sending the sap all over the ground and onto the enemy.
  • Those Two Guys
  • Useless Superpowers: Initially, Boss's pinecone tree powers seem like this...until you find out that he can transform people permanently into pinecone trees.

The tactical strategist, widely considered by many as the New Resistance's best operative. Thunwave is cool, calm, and ruthless, similar to Dark. He prefers working by himself, however; he is antisocial and doesn't talk much.

  • The Ace: Considered to be this due to his skill in battle.
    • Broken Ace: Gets really angsty after Boss and Ryu push him a little too far, which leads to NeoChaos giving him some psychological help.
  • Aloof Ally
  • The Comically Serious
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: After finally mustering up the self-esteem and courage to realize that he's actually competent, he decides to confess to Aquila. She rejects him harshly; right after that, Rai rips open his back and tears his chest apart. It's specifically stated that Aquila can see Rai's claws poking out of Thunwave's chest.
  • Elemental Punch: His lightning punches are one of the most useful tools in his arsenal.
  • Heroic Safe Mode: During the Cult's attack on the supermarket, he charges off blindly into the legions of Cultists because he's so distraught by the possibility that someone would die. Dauteru has to retrieve him and is heavily wounded in the process.
  • I Work Alone: There are multiple instances of him abandoning his group and charging off alone; this is mostly thanks to Boss and Ryu's teasing affecting him psychologically.
  • The Lancer: To Ryu's and Boss' Leader.
  • Number Two
  • Shock and Awe: His main set of powers.
  • The Stoic
  • Tsundere: Has an enormous crush on Aquila, and acts like this whenever it's brought up. Set with Suspiciously Specific Denial and all.
  • You Are in Command Now: When Boss and Ryu get kidnapped by Caelus.

The head of the technology department of the New Resistance (and the old Resistance, for that matter). NeoChaos is a tall, tanned human with a knack for technology.

  • All-Loving Hero: Tried to be kind to everyone, and wanted to change the world and make it a happy place.
  • Bash Brothers: With Credul and Tasar, apparently.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Appears to become this, which makes Credul very unstable. In reality, he was sorely missed by everyone; they just hid it behind all of their stupid antics.
  • Hidden Depths: Apparently rescued the child Ganato from death, and nursed him back to health. Remember that both of them were street urchins at the time. Likewise, he later took Credul under his wing to show him the world.
  • Minor Major Impact
  • Posthumous Character: His death leads to Credul's turn to darkness and cynicism, which later leads to him founding Project Rebirth and attempting to completely wipe the world of life and restart from zero.
  • Red Shirt: His first appearance consists of him healing the weary Aero and sending him out with an Eye robot. Then, at 3:00 AM the next day, Dark (Drake) busts into the Space Base and murders him. His only purpose was to show how threatening Alias Aokawa was, despite only having a couple people by his side.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Due to Credul's attachment to him...
  • The Smart Guy: A technological genius; it is noted that he created Geno and the regenerative vats.
  • Squishy Wizard: He is killed quite easily, but he had a lot of neat abilities at his disposal. Like his smartwatch.
  • Technopath: His fighting style revolved around hiding behind robots and using technology.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye

Atlas Aokawa

Alias Aokawa's brother; a physically-powerful energy manipulator, and the leader of the New Resistance's Demolition Corps. Basically, a clone of Edwin.

Gabriel "The Doctor" Sante

Felix's replacement after he quit. Gabriel is a younger, immature guy who insists on being called "The Doctor". Despite this, he's actually a competent medic.

Charlotte "Aquila" Harukaze

The leader of the Gun Corps; an air-headed girl whose mind is always on croissants.

  • Action Girl
  • Break the Cutie: Credul does this by questioning her priorities and telling her to open her eyes and push her fantasies away. It's too much for her, and she commits suicide.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She acts like the war isn't really happening when off duty, and can often be found goofing off. Her cheerful attitude never leaves her until Thunwave's death.
  • Clueless Dude Magnet: Thunwave. Dante. Even Dondre from The New Age. Countless other soldiers. Hell, even Credul said that he once loved Aquila. Possibly because she's one of the few women to have a prominent part in the Resistance.
    • And yet she has no idea.
  • Cold Sniper: In her "serious face" mode, she has a couple moments of this.
  • Curtains Match the Window
  • The Ditz
  • Driven to Suicide: By Credul's cynical words.
  • The Gunslinger: Uses a plethora of gun weapons.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Has a "serious mode" which she uses in missions. It's a very drastic change from her usually airheaded nature.
  • Swiss Army Weapon: Her two lightning pistols can transform into tonfas.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Croissants...croissants...croissants...

Credul Valadon

Credul is an initially-naive Resistance soldier who harnesses dark energy. He is one of Thunwave's lieutenants.

Ricky Terr

Ardan's second in command; a young, inexperienced guy who often panics under pressure.

Dauteru Izayoi

Dauteru is one of the Resistance's commanders; he specializes in heavy defense and mobile combat.

  • Emergency Services: He's the head of the "Protection and Evacuation" squadrons, which is basically the New Resistance's equivalent of a rescue and recovery team. Basically, he flies over to whoever's in trouble, tanks a bunch of hits with his armor, and flies away with the soldiers that need to be rescued.
  • Feather Flechettes
  • Four Is Death: The feathers on his four wings are enchanted; they can hypnotize anyone too close.
  • Fragile Speedster: Without his armor, it's fairly easy to take him down - if you can hit him, that is.
  • Instant Armor: Can be summoned to provide defense, but it slows him down considerably.
  • Master of Illusion: His hypnotic feathers allow him to do this. He's also had some training under Ardan.
  • Mighty Glacier: His armor is almost indestructible and very, very resilient. But it considerably slows him down.
  • Powered Armor
  • Shed Armor, Gain Speed
  • Vacuum Mouth: One of his aeromancy powers.

Thomas is a light-hearted field commander who often works with Vince. He has a blue cape that he consistently keeps clean and shiny.

Vince , aka "Red Tiger"

Vince is a no-nonsense, serious field commander who often works with Thomas.

Jarek Twardowski

Jarek is the resident interrogation specialist. He first appears during the supermarket's assault, where he imprisons Valence.

SRJ is the commanding officer in charge of the third Resistance group. He shows up at the very end of the book, during the confrontation with Bloods.

    New Resistance Soldiers

A young dragon. He accidentally falls into a vat of radioactive material while trying to escape the Cult of Jorian, and is mutated into a dark green alien-like thing.

Norman Chang

A simple-minded aeromancer. There's not really much else.

  • The Big Guy
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: This happens to him when he tries to single-handedly take down the Cult.
  • Dumb Blonde
  • Living Prop: He tags along with Logan; during this time, he doesn't really succeed in anything.
  • Too Dumb to Live: When Rai accuses him of killing a police officer (and prepares to give him the death penalty), Norman begins to debate with him and complains that Typhoon was neither a police officer nor dead. That was exactly as much time Rai needed to kill him.

Jutsu McCloud and Kuro

A duo of mercenaries hired by the New Resistance to fortify Norman's team. They are captured alongside him. Jutsu sticks with Logan after the escape, but Kuro is unwillingly thrown elsewhere thanks to randomly appearing portals.

Aaron Reggardo

A wise, gray-haired young man and Resistance soldier. Analytical and quiet. He mainly uses swords modified for throwing. (basically, large throwing knives).

  • Hidden Depths: He's actually an old friend of Neptuna's, who she talked into joining Sky.
  • No Body Left Behind: He gets disintegrated by an enormous energy beam while trying to protect his stunned friends.
  • Red Shirt: Travels with Logan for a while, but is then killed by Krimzon Fist X. Unfortunately, he was never a talker, so we don't get to learn much about him.
  • Storm of Blades
  • Summon to Hand: He can do this with his swords.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye

Voron / Darkness

Originally a Cultist, but rebelled after he was forced to kill civilians. As his name suggests, he controls shadows.

     New Resistance Allies

Shan is the young owner of the hugely successful Kobayashi Robotics company; he was supporting the Cult for some time, but eventually switched to the Resistance. Strangely enough, he has Felix's body hopping powers.

It turns out that Felix had tried to steal Shan's body, but Shan's willpower overcame Felix's. Thus, Shan stole all of Felix's abilities and powers, including the body-hopping.

Shan is quirky and a little immature. He occasionally will change names if he finds someone with a "cooler" name than he; thus, he changes his name to Tason in the middle of the series.

  • Abnormal Ammo: His main ranged weapon is throwing needles.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Averted. He actually is trying to do what is best for the people and his company.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has moments.
  • Didn'tSeeThatComing: When Darkness fights his robots. Initially, it was supposed to be a way to easily dispose of the dark warrior; however, Darkness destroyed the robots and came after Shan once he realized that Shan was dealing with the Cult.
  • Grand Theft Me
  • Karma Houdini: Never gets punished for what he does.

The Coalition of Intellectuals

The group that NeoChaos is sponsored by; the last batch of scientists on Earth. They live in the last science lab on Earth, which is on one of the Marshall Islands.

The Coalition only has one relevant member: its leader Caelus.
