Narrator

    Karl
Played by: KarlJacobs
A time traveller who jumps around the timeline in order to document events as they happen. He plays various roles throughout his travels. For general tropes about Karl, see here.

The Village That Went Mad

"And now, time to discuss who you think might be the murderer."
The narrator of the story and a witness to the events that unfolded. His role was the Gamemaster, who doesn't participate in the episode as a character, though from a meta perspective, he is the one who conducts the murders in place of the Killers.
  • Bait-and-Switch: He is prone to using these comments to announce who is chosen to be executed at the end of each day.

The Masquerade

"Nothing is going to go wrong in this ballroom!"
A Minecraft streamer who was allowed to attend the Masquerade for having a "profitable" profession.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: He shows disdain towards the poor while attending the Masquerade, though it is heavily implied that it was all an act.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite showing distasteful opinions on poor people, Karl is disgusted by the murders, even the one of Drew P. Wiener, who was considered too poor to matter.

The Wild West

"There's a new sheriff in town!"
A new arrival to the town in the West.
  • Boots of Toughness: He gets a pair of iron Yeezys from the store, and wears them for the rest of the episode, including while shooting badnits.
  • But Now I Must Go: After saving the town from the "Democrat Haters", he leaves it.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He has shades of this, with his tendency to stand still and stare off into the distance for minutes at a time, and claiming that "72% of his brain" decided on having Crops participate in a duel against one of the bandits.
  • The Drifter: Being a time traveller, he stops by the town long enough to save it from the bandits, and leaves afterward.
  • Due to the Dead: Before leaving the town, Karl brings all the remaining residents of the town to the Church of Prime to hold a brief memorial service for John John.
  • Embarrassing Middle Name: After announcing his full name of "twitch.tv/karljacobs", he puts his head in his hands.
  • Honor Before Reason: When the Sheriff asks if they can just jump and Zerg Rush the remaining two bandits at the time and drive them out of the town, Karl says that it's "not the cowboy way" and would rather the one-on-one duels be carried out as agreed before.
  • Motive Misidentification: He never intended to replace Sheriff Sherman Thompson. He only claimed that he was going to do so, because he wanted to threaten the bandits into leaving John John alone and act as a leader figure against them.
  • Nice Guy: He's a polite, friendly and helpful guy who helps the town defeat the bandits.
  • Pun: On his way to the shooting range, Karl tells a cow in the road to "move over", with an emphasis on the first word.
  • Shout-Out: He asks who let the cows out of the ranch in a way that is oddly reminiscent of the song "Who Let the Dogs Out" by Baha Men.
  • The Social Expert: He's very charismatic and polite, and able to recruit all the residents to fight against the bandits.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Mason the bandit comments on Karl having "pretty, pretty eyes" before their Duel to the Death. This may, in retrospect, refer to him having Supernatural Gold Eyes.

The Pit

The cameraman of Porkius VII.
  • All-Loving Hero: He cares about appeasing people he believe are kind-hearted and shows no favor to those who he believe have terrible traits.
  • Epic Fail: The reason he gets executed at the end of his journey is because he left the cap on the camera lens, meaning he only managed to record the audio but not any actual footage.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After speaking to Jackie about the friendship they had developed throughout his short-lived career as Porkius' cameraman, he accepts his execution.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He wears a pair of purple-tinted goggles on his head, but naturally, never puts them on. Enforced as it's a Minecraft skin.
  • Medium Awareness: He makes several references to video games throughout the episode.
Karl: It saved a few! If I was speedrunning life, as if it were a video game...
  • NaĂŻve Newcomer: He is not familiar with the customs and culture of the Subben Empire and says that he is not from around there. Justified in that he is a time traveller who had just arrived in the empire.

The Inbetween

The many mysterious incarnations of Karl found to be wandering the Courtyard of the Inbetween.
  • Alternate Universe: They are all representations of Karl from various alternate timelines.
The Other Side: These versions of yourself have lost themselves.
The Other Side: They have stayed in the inbetween for far too long and have lost who they are, doomed to traverse this castle forever.
  • Chekhov's Army: They first appear in The Stinger of "The Wild West". The reason they are there in the first place is revealed in "The Pit", which convinces Karl to flee to the Other Side.
  • Ethereal White Dress: Gender Inverted. They all wear the white and gray version of Karl's outfit characteristic of being of the Inbetween, and have lost their identities to suffer a Fate Worse than Death.
  • Fate Worse than Death: They are unable to communicate and seemed to be able to walk right through living entities, having lost their identities wandering the Inbetween. It is also implied that their loved ones were still waiting for their respective Karls to come home, only that they never would.
  • Loss of Identity: One thing they have in common is that they have lost who they were, and doomed themselves to wander the Inbetween forever.

Historical Characters

Residents of "Not A Very Good Town" Town
A group of 8 people who lived hundreds of years before the main events of the SMP in a small village. Their tragic fates were the subject of the second episode of Tales from the SMP, "The Village That Went Mad".

Miles Memington

Played by: GeorgeNotFound
"I'm... Miles Memington, [...] steak connoisseur. I would never do such atrocities."
A somewhat stuffy resident of the village, and a connoisseur of steak. His role was an Innocent.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: He has noticeably thick eyebrows. It's exceptional because it contrasts the much smaller size of his eyes, when compared to other characters with eyebrows on their Minecraft skins.
  • Burn the Witch!: According to Ponk's findings, Miles was once burnt by the villagers for being a witch.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He apparently knows a lot about steak, and is usually seen munching on it during the game.

Catboy

Played by: Corpse Husband
"Calm down, wench. The boy did nothing."
A technically unnamed resident of the village who works in the fields. His role was the Doctor.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Implied. He lived with Cornelius before his passing and referred to him as his "partner"; yet after Cornelius's death, he asks Helga to stay with him the following night, though this never comes to pass as he gets executed at the end of the day.
  • Bury Your Disabled: It's revealed during the first round of questioning that he's completely blind, which he tries to use to his defense. It doesn't save him.
  • Cat Boy: Obviously. He's an unusual example in that he doesn't actually have cat ears, just a tail.
  • Like a Son to Me: He's a surrogate father figure to Robin.
  • Little Bit Beastly: He has a long, dark grey cat tail.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • When Robin gets executed, Catboy can be heard saying, "Straight to Hell, buddy." This is the very thing Corpse had previously said right before killing Tubbo and winning the game as an Impostor during a fateful game of Among Us.
    • He says on several occasions that the Killer could possibly be him, which is likely a reference to Corpse's fellow content creator Sykkuno, who often says during rounds of Among Us that the Impostor could be him.
  • No Name Given: He's never actually given a name, and is usually referred to as 'Cat' or 'Catboy' for the sake of calling him something.
  • Papa Wolf: He speaks in defense of Robin, who was his surrogate son figure, when Helga raises suspicion on him.

Helga

Played by: Quackity
"Everyone goes to hell along with me, motherfuckers!"
The promiscuous wife of the village's mayor. Her role was an Innocent.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: Inverted. Helga wears a modern-day bikini hundreds of years before it was invented, if the names of the election campaigns are any indication of when the Dream SMP as we know it takes place.
  • Child Hater: She seems to find children annoying because all they did was "cry and shit".
  • Dying Alone: She's murdered by the killers while stargazing alone on the roof of her house.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: She's very blatant about her sexual life, but she was also described to be highly respected by others and rich, and is said to have many connections.
  • Really Gets Around: Despite being married, she's been with almost every other person in the village.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: She curses an awful lot for a woman from hundreds of years ago in the past, to her husband's dismay.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's the only woman living in the town.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Possibly. Throughout his findings about the Village That Went Mad, Ponk finds a picture of Helga and speculates that Quackity could be descended from her, based on the two's similar appearances. However, whether or not the two are actually related is still unknown and unconfirmed.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Implied. The reason for her adultery and promiscuity is unknown, but she is regularly mistreated by her husband and even tells him publicly that she wished he were dead.

Bob

Played by: LazarBeam
"Bob the Builder, they call me."
A construction worker who lives in the village and a distant ancestor of LazarBeam's. His role was a Killer.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: He and his partner get away with murdering the rest of the town in the end.
  • The Generic Guy: He doesn't say much during the discussions and doesn't have a lot of other standout character traits... probably because he's secretly a murderer.
  • In-Series Nickname: Helga nicknamed him "Shrimpy" in the practice round. It would imply that this nickname was non-canonical... until it's revealed in Jack's old journals that he calls Bob "Shrimpy" (or "Shrimpdick") as well.
  • Karma Houdini: Neither of the murderers is ever under suspicion of being a killer by the rest of the town.
  • Sanity Slippage: Though it is only revealed after the events of the episode, Jack's journals imply that Foolish was behind this, which caused him and Jack to go on a killing spree.
  • Shout-Out: His name is a very obvious reference to Bob the Builder.

Robin

Played by: Tubbo
"No, no, no, no..."
A young orphan boy whose parents were killed in the Red-Eyes Villager Wars, who was taken in by the village. His role was the Jester.
  • Death of a Child: Robin is very young, but he's ruthlessly executed by his fellow townspeople all the same.
  • Death Seeker: His role was the Jester, which means doing the best you can to get yourself executed. It's implied that the in-universe explanation is that he wants to be Together in Death with his parents.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: He lost both of his parents, then his surrogate father figure, before finally being executed by the town.
  • Parental Substitute: Catboy was this to him after the deaths of his biological parents.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": He gives one of these when Catboy gets put on the chopping block.

Jimmy

Played by: BadBoyHalo
"You've got to be kidding me."
The mayor of Not A Very Good Town Town, and Helga's husband. His role was the Investigator.

Jack

Played by: Ponk
"Day 790: The Strange man is back, his body made of straw but eyes of emrald."
A farmer who lives in the town and a distant ancestor of Ponk's, who has a fondness for potatoes. His role was a Killer.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: He's one of the killers, and gets away with his crime in the end.
  • Karma Houdini: Neither he nor his partner ever come under suspicion as the murders.
  • Sanity Slippage: Though it is only revealed after the events of the episode, Jack's journals imply that Foolish was behind this, which caused him and Bob to go on a killing spree.

Cornelius

Played by: Dream
A fairly ordinary resident of the village. His role was an Innocent.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Like Catboy, it's implied. He lived with Catboy, who refers to him as his "partner", but Helga claims that he wanted her services before he died.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: Inverted. He claims to be wearing a green bodysuit, which wouldn't be popularized until the 1950s and likely wouldn't exist hundreds of years before the Dream SMP's main storyline.
  • Identical Stranger: A weird, sort of meta example. While everyone else participating in the game changed their skin to fit their character, Dream didn't, which means Cornelius looks exactly like Dream will a century later.
  • The Magnificent: Karl's narration describes him to be "Cornelius the Wise".
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He's murdered at the very beginning of the game, and never gets to participate in any discussions.

    Residents of the Wild West

John John

Played by: Ranboo
The bartender and owner of the saloon. He was a man that was slowly going poor, having bandits loot and rob his store. He was also in debt to Percy, the banker. John later died in a duel, leaving his bar abandoned.
  • Anachronism Stew: His saloon has a karaoke corner. Karaoke was invented in Japan... in the 1970s.
  • First Friend: He was Karl's first friend that was a resident of the town, and Karl quickly gets into a duel against his murderer to avenge him.
  • Improbable Age: Implied; he owns a saloon and sells alcohol, but is repeatedly implied to not be old enough to legally do so. This is likely a joke on the fact that Ranboo the streamer, who plays him, was a teenager at the time the episode was streamed. invoked

Jack Kanoff

Played by: Quackity
"You're sounding like a democrat right now..."
The leader of the Democrat Haters, a group of bandits. He was shot by Crops in a duel, albeit unfairly.
  • Affably Evil: Downplayed. He calmly and politely introduces himself (or at least, as politely as he can be, with a name like his) and his fellow bandits to Karl before yelling at him to get out of the saloon they were raiding.
  • Aggressive Categorism: He'd name anything and everything that annoys him a Democrat.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Despite claiming he had a wife, Jack checks Crops out and claims he has a "nice ass", and has a couple of homoerotic moments with Mason.
  • Awful Wedded Life: According to him, Jack was furious when he found out his "wife" was a Democrat and thus had opposing political opinions with him. However, the Sheriff is quick to point out that women couldn't vote during the time period this was set in, meaning that either his "wife" supported Democrat policies of the time in private and he just found out, or he's lying.
  • Boots of Toughness: He wears brown cowboy boots and is a bandit leader.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: He tells Crops a joke before their duel. No one other than the bandits laugh at it.
"How do you confuse a Democrat? [...] You don't, they're born that way!"
  • Girlfriend in Canada: He claims that he has a wife, and is upset that she's a Democrat, even though the Sheriff later points out that women couldn't vote at the time. However, he himself is a bandit, seemingly without a set home, who roams the land with his fellow bandits called the "Democrat Haters" to raid towns in the desert, and has the odd homoerotic moment with either his fellow bandit Mason, or one of the townspeople.
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: He uses a glass bottle as a weapon several times.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: When Karl suggests to do an "old-fashioned Texan standoff" instead of having each of the townspeople killed one by one, Jack's exaggerated Southern accent slips as he confronts Karl on whether he's manipulating him.
  • Punny Name: His name is a play on 'jacking off'.
  • The Sheriff: Subverted. Although he wears the outfit of a stereotypical sheriff, he's actually a bandit.
  • Villain Cred: He's quite impressed by Crops for his cannibalism.

Mason

Played by: Sapnap
"We'll be back with our guns!"
One of the bandits, along with Jack and Connor. He shot John John in a duel and was later killed by Karl as revenge.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: He wears a green bandana and is a prominent bandit.
  • Crusading Widower: Implied. While the exact nature of Jack and Mason's relationship outside of being close with each other and fellow bandits is never explicitly stated, after Jack dies, Mason kills John John in their duel and said that it was revenge against the townspeople for killing Jack.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He felt a strong companionship with his fellow bandits, and was determined to avenge them after their deaths.
  • Gay Cowboy: Implied. Mason's an outlaw of the Old West, and has had several homoerotic moments with his fellow bandit Jack, and also thinks Karl has "pretty, pretty eyes".
  • Guns Akimbo: Implied, as he has two gun holsters, one on each side of his body.
  • Morality Pet: He hated most people and especially Democrats, but he cared about his fellow bandits greatly.
  • Only One Name: He doesn't have a given surname.
    Karl: Yeah, no last name?
Mason: No la– you don't needa know it.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Before his duel, Mason puts on Connor's boots and picks up Jack's head, and promises to kick the townspeople's asses.
  • Villainous Crush: Before the duel that would end his life, he says this:
"I can't wait to see the life leave your pretty, pretty eyes, Karl."

Flint "Connor" Michigan

Played by ConnorEatsPants
"Boys, I'm gonna do this for you, for the boys, y'all been good friends to me, and I'm gonna represent ya here."
One of the bandits. He was shot in a duel with Sheriff Sherman Thompson.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: He was often left behind by his fellow bandits because he preferred to be on his feet rather than riding a horse.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: Inverted. Like ConnorEatsPants, he wears a Sonic onesie.
  • Boots of Toughness: He wears a pair of bright red boots and is a prominent bandit.
  • Identical Stranger: Similar to Cornelius from "The Village that Went Mad", Connor hadn't changed his skin like everyone else, and in the opening scene introduces himself as Connor. His name is later revealed to be Flint Michigan. Given Connor's implied time travel abilities, this may be justified with them actually being the same individual.
  • Red Is Violent: His boots are bright red, and he's an antagonistic bandit who robs hapless townspeople.

Percy

Played by: Tubbo
"For the right price, money can buy anything."
The banker of the town.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite claiming he cannot do so, he's a crack shot with a gun.
  • Large Ham: He can get rather dramatic and is prone to exaggeration.
Percy: (about the gold in the bank vault) A little bit bigger? It was PILED TO THE ROOFTOPS, JOHN!
  • Morally Bankrupt Banker: He's pessimistic and heavily implied to be involved in illegal activities.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite being an unpleasant person, he loves his pets, and holds a grudge against the bandits for killing his cat.

Sheriff Sherman Thompson

Played by: Technoblade
"There are two kinds of folks, the bad and the worse."
The sheriff of the town who's one week away from retirement.
  • Badass Boast: In response to Jack and Mason lamenting that Connor's death meant one less vote for the Republican Party.
Sheriff Sherman Thompson: You guys got another thing comin' if you think death will stop me from votin'!
  • Bad Cop/Incompetent Cop: The only person he has ever managed to catch is Crops, who he lets out of jail on a regular basis, and he also easily accepts bribes.
  • Black Comedy Animal Cruelty: He shoots a horse before Karl and Mason's duel.
  • Combat Pragmatist: After Connor gets killed in a duel, the Sheriff asks if the townspeople can just jump and Zerg Rush the remaining two bandits and drive them out of the town. However, Karl doesn't let him, claiming it's "not the cowboy way", even if the two were criminals.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: He is very nonchalant about the consequences of letting Crops the cannibal, who is arrested and jailed, roam the streets of the town at night.
Sheriff Sherman Thompson: We don't got enough money to feed him, so we kind of just let him out and hope he like–
    Percy: Really?
Sheriff Sherman Thompson: He is like, a free-range criminal.
Percy: Oh, is that where that orphan child went?
Crops: I clean up the town.
Sheriff Sherman Thompson: Oh, that's where the orphan went.
  • Cool Horse: He rides a dark grey horse, and is the only person in town that owns one other than the bandits. Percy then remarks that he had stolen the horse from him, to which the Sheriff denies the allegation.
Sheriff Sherman Thompson: No worries, I already got horsepower. (Beat) One, to be exact.
  • Cool Old Guy: He is a week away from retirement, but that doesn't stop him from killing one of the bandits with no trouble.
  • Dirty Cop: He is a sheriff who easily accepts bribes.
  • Eye Scream: He is blind in his left eye and has a scar over it.
  • The Gunslinger: Being the only man in town with a gun, he's naturally this.
  • Handicapped Badass: He is blind in one eye but is still a capable fighter.
  • I Call It "Vera": He named his gun "Old Faithful".
  • Pig Man: His skin is based on an anthropomorphic pig.
  • Police Brutality: He claims that the residents of the town were all regulars in his jail, and held a gun to William's face as he tried to steal a muffin, who agreed that violence was the #1 form of currency around the surrounding areas.

Crops

Played by: Corpse Husband
"For now, I am satiated."
An infamous criminal and cannibal who had killed at least 13 people.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: He wears a blue bandana around his neck and is a ruthless killer.
  • Beyond Redemption: Karl calls him "irredeemably bad" to his face, but nonetheless wishes him good luck in his duel.
  • Black Comedy Cannibalism: He's an unrepentant cannibal, but it's mostly Played for Laughs.
  • Curtains Match the Window: His hair and eyes are both dark reddish brown.
  • The Dreaded: Crops is mainly intimidating for his cannibalism, and even the Sheriff doesn't want to die in the duel, claiming he doesn't want his dead body to be consumed by him.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In the prison, Crops is seen holding the head of the reverend/priest of the town, indicating his... particular taste for human flesh.
  • Evil Redhead: Downplayed. His hair is a dark, slightly reddish brown and is a cannibalistic criminal who gets Villain Cred from one of the Arc Villains of the episode.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: Despite liking Prime, Crops doesn't believe in the afterlife.
  • Hollywood Atheist: Since he doesn't believe in the afterlife, the Sheriff speculates that Crops is an atheist and this could be the reason why he eats people, implying that the Sheriff, at the very least, believes atheists are immoral/evil.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Is jailed for being a cannibal.
  • Nominal Hero: Crops fights alongside the townspeople, but very few of them seem to actually like him due to his rampant cannibalism, and the 'evil' bandits seem to respect him more than the townspeople do.
  • The Quiet One: He doesn't speak much, and when he does, it's either in a cryptic or threatening tone.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He's always seen eating his victims' heads, and not other body parts.
  • Villain Cred: When Jack tells Crops that he likes him and is impressed by him, Crops tells Jack back that he likes him too.

Ron "Michael" Ronson

Played by: Fundy
"GREAT SHOT!"
The owner of the post office.
  • Ambiguously Human: He looks like a normal human, but speaks in a monotone and robotic voice, and often repeats phrases like a robot.
  • A-Team Firing: He can barely fire a few blocks in front of him.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: When encountering a pair of leads arranged to look like the number "69" in William's shop, Michael claims that he does "that" with his wife a lot. Considering that the aforementioned wife is a chicken...
  • Cannon Fodder: The Sheriff decides to recruit him for this purpose, against the bandits. Karl and John John later agree that he's just there to be a "meat shield", as the latter puts it.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He has a chicken as his "wife", sets off fireworks at random intervals, wears a salmon on his head as a hat, and eats Japanese lanterns.
  • Dead Guy Junior: He is named after his father, who was in turn named after his father, who was also named after his father, meaning there have been at least three generations of Ron Ronsons in this family.
  • Domestic Abuse: When Karl hits Michael's chicken "wife" to try and get her to move (as per Minecraft logic), Michael has this to say:
Michael: Please do not hit my wife, only I can.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He first appears to be ducking behind the counter of the post office, with a salmon on top of his hat, establishing that he's... a bit of a weirdo.
  • Fatal Fireworks: The fireworks that he sets off randomly end up killing Percy's pet Banking Bee. The townspeople later lie about it and claim that the bandits did it, despite them not being anywhere near at the time.
  • Paste Eater: Apparently, he eats Japanese lanterns.
  • Repetitive Name: Type 3, though he prefers to be called "Michael".
Michael: My name is Ron Ronson, son of Ron, obviously son of my dad Ron Ronson, who, yet again, is the son of Ron Ronson, but you can call me Michael.

William Williamson

Played by: BadBoyHalo
The clerk of the town, who sells goods to the townspeople.
  • Berserk Button: People, especially the bandits, entering his shop to touch everything, but never buy anything.
  • Hidden Depths: William might seem like just a good-hearted shopkeeper on the surface, but he's a surprisingly good shot with a gun.
  • Nice Guy: He is usually nice to everyone. The one exception are the bandits, since he did not appreciate them touching the items from his store without purchasing them.
  • Repetitive Name: Type 3; William Williamson.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Muffins. He often eats them and offers them to anybody he met.

    Attendees of the Masquerade Party
In the episode "The Masquerade", a group of rich people come together to party, but it devolved into a nightmare as people started dying one by one.

Sir Billiam III

Played by: Technoblade
"Names are for people, and this man is poor!"
The owner of the mansion where the Masquerade takes place, who looks down on the lower class and calls them "commoners".
  • Ambiguously Related: The brothers Hamilton and George Billiam from "The Maze" claim descent from the "legendary" Sir Billiam, but it's not stated whether they're descended from Sir Billiam III specifically or another bearer of the name and title.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He apparently possesses the title "Sir" and is the Big Bad of the episode.
  • Bad Boss: He treats the Butler very poorly and considers poisoning him several times, to the point that it is offhandedly mentioned that his other butler, Hubert, ran off.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: He, along with his butler, are the only two left alive in the mansion, and he orders Karl to be killed in order to feed The Egg.
  • Bank Robbery: In the "Wild West" episode, Sheriff Sherman Thompson claims that he walked into the bank, claiming to be an investor, and made off with all the money in the town three months before the episode took place.
  • Cold Ham: Though he is quite dramatic at times, especially when showing off his wealth and disdain towards the poor, he is also very prone to snarking at the situation at hand.
  • Dehumanization: He considers "poor" people to be subhuman, if human at all, and doesn't consider them to be even worthy of names.
  • Gluttonous Pig: Of the greedy variety, in that he's a Pig Man with so much disdain for anyone short of upper class that he teamed up with a parasitic, mind-controlling Alien Kudzu to have them murdered.
  • Kill the Poor: He believes that poor people are subhuman and justifies the attendees' deaths by calling them only "upper middle class", explaining that The Egg fed on poor people, which implies he believes that death is an effective way to deal with the poor. He then ordered Karl's death, explaining that January means Karl's revenue as a Minecraft streamer is very low, despite previously allowing his attendance because he considered streaming a profitable career.
Billiam: (in a Stage Whisper) Psst! Butler! Feed the poor man poison!
  • Lack of Empathy: He showed little emotion towards the murders that took place; he only worried about them decreasing his property value. After the group found Drew P. Wiener's dead body, Sir Billiam was more concerned about the man's blood staining his bookshelves and valuables than, well, the fact that one of his guests, if an unwanted one, was just found dead in his house.
  • Pig Man: His skin is based on one.
  • Take That!: His very existence is a satirical parody of the ultra-rich who exploited the poor and only cared for their own interests.
  • Visual Pun: He's a billionaire pig in a fancy outfit who demeans and mocks the poor... in other words, a capitalist pig.
  • "Wanted!" Poster: He appears on one in the town in the Wild West.

Butler/Servant

Played by: Ranboo
"I'm going to have to ask you to go back inside there, Karl."
The butler of Sir Billiam. He apparently worked in very poor conditions and was not allowed to speak or make contact/interact with the attendees of the Masquerade. At the end of the episode, the Butler revealed that he had known about the murders all along.
  • Battle Butler: It would make sense for him to be one, being the culprit being the murders of Oliver and Karl.
  • The Butler Did It: Under Sir Billiam's command, he kills Karl, the last remaining guest at the party, in order to feed him to The Egg.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: According to his actor, Ranboo, Sir Billiam III had kidnapped the Butler as a small child from the town in The Wild West whilst stealing money from the bank. The episode "The Wild West" also reveals that he was an orphan who was forced to work at the saloon's karaoke bar by reading some cards, and wasn't paid well for his work.
  • Denied Food as Punishment: Sir Billiam does this to him for days at a time whenever he does so, as punishment for minor infractions such as taking seconds too long to answer to him. This goes to the point that not letting him eat for a week or two is considered common practice for Billiam.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Whether he doesn't have a name or he just was never allowed to give it by Sir Billiam, everyone just called him variations of the "Butler" or "Servant".
  • The Quiet One: Sir Billiam forbids him from speaking more than a few words at a time, and when he does speak, he has to ask permission first. He is later given a thirty minute grace period where he can talk freely... until he asks what a union is.

Oliver Cumbucket

Played by: Fundy
"That never happened in London before..."
A 63-year-old attendee of the Masquerade supposedly from London, and an old friend of Sir Billiam's. He was the fifth person murdered, and the Butler disguised his murder as a "heart attack".
  • Overly Long Name: His full name is Oliver Arechtenshire Smitselist Cumbucket.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: He speaks with an overly exaggerated frail Cockney accent, often having to declare that he really is, in fact from London.

Lord Sebastian

Played by: BadBoyHalo
"Excuse me, it's Lord Sebastian."
An attendee of the Masquerade. He was the third person murdered, and died while hiding next to Karl.

James

Played by: Sapnap
A businessman and an attendee of the Masquerade. He was the fourth person murdered and died next to Oliver, which made the other attendees suspect Oliver.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Implied, as he had apparently never been complimented on his looks before the Masquerade.
  • Despair Event Horizon: There are implications that he is going through this during the course of the Masquerade, after his divorce which caused him to be split from his family.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: When Sir Billiam III asked about his family life, James answered in short sentences and revealed that he had been divorced and lost the custody of his children. He then asked for a drink.

Lyaria

Played by: Nihachu
"What a... particular name."
A close friend of Sir Billiam III who attended the Masquerade. She was the second person to get murdered.

Drew P. Wiener

Played by: Quackity
"What does the 'B' in Vitamin B stand for?"
A poor farmer who had intended to attend a nudist party, but ended up at the wrong place. He was the first person to get murdered.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He has bronze skin, and if we were to take his Real Joke Name seriously, his surname is derived from German and may indicate one of his ancestors is from Vienna. However, other than this, not much about his family background or his race/ethnicity is known.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: He seems to like Red Bull, as a contrast to everyone's preferred drinks of wine and juices.
  • Euphemistic Names: His name is based around a rather lewd pun on 'droopy wiener'.
  • Everything is Big in Texas: He speaks with a very strong Texan accent and is open about his heritage.
  • Half-Witted Hillbilly: He is implied to be from a rural Texan farm and apparently doesn't even know how to spell the word 'economy'.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is extremely passionate and takes offense to anything that could be taken as a jab towards him.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: At the beginning of the Masquerade ball, Drew coughs on the guests, who scatter and flee at this, with Sir Billiam screaming that he might have tuberculosis. Drew also ends up being the first casualty of the night.
  • Lower-Class Lout: He's a crude, loud person who had no sense of personal space or boundaries.
  • Naked People Are Funny: He spends his screen time wearing only his red mask and a lime green speedo, in contrast to the wealthier attendees who are more dressed up for the occasion.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: He takes offense to "Lord" Sebastian addressing himself as a lord, claiming that the only Lord he knew was "Jesus H. Christ". As for the badass part, he has claimed that he had to kill crocodiles to get the dye for his... clothing, or lack thereof.

Future Characters

    Visitors of the Haunted Mansion

Joey

Played by: Punz
"Oh yeah. I used to do this all the time in gym class. This is so easy."

Schlatt

Played by: Jschlatt

Connor's business partner and the lonely landlord of the Mansion.

Greg

Played by: GeorgeNotFound
One of Connor's friends who helped with the three trials Schlatt set up along the way.

Zachary

Played by: Ranboo
"It's fine, we're all unstable sometimes."
Ash's identical twin and a good friend of Connor's.
  • Those Two Guys: With his twin, Ash; they are never seen without the other.

Porkums

Played by: Technoblade
"NONE OF YOU ARE FREE OF SIN. GET OUT."
A good friend of Connor who is often made fun of by Schlatt.
  • Butt-Monkey: Although not as extreme as Gump, Porkums gets targeted for his hat, which Glatt finds funny.
  • Nice Guy: He's nice to everyone.
  • Pig Man: He is an anthropomorphic pig.

Francis

Played by: Dream
"I'm up for the task!"

  • Identical Stranger: Another meta example. While everyone else in the episode changed their skin to fit their character, Dream barely did, only changing his signature smile to what looks like a mustache. Karl lampshades this, saying that he recognized Francis because he resembled Dream.
  • Leitmotif: When Francis volunteers for a task which, according to Schlatt, had a 7.5 trillion chance of being completed, Dream's signature speedrun music starts playing.
  • Jerkass to One: Type 1. He's only mean to Gump, and is nice to everyone else.

Ash

Played by: Tubbo
"I reckon they're dating or something."
Zachary's identical twin and a good friend of Connor's.
  • Those Two Guys: With his twin, Zachary; they are never seen without the other.

Played by: Sapnap
"I have a very weird feeling like I want to smooch you right now."
A good friend of Connor.
  • Ambiguously Gay: He flirts with Karl a bit, however Karl rejects his advances.

Gump/Spud

Played by: BadBoyHalo

Connor

Played by: ConnorEatsPants
"Get the soundbar!"
Schlatt's business partner. For more information about this character, see here.

    Residents of the Subben Empire
A militaristic, authoritarian, and advanced empire, set many years into the future — specifically, a year before the exploration of the Lost City of Mizu.

Porkius VII

Played by: Technoblade
"Let the fight begin!"
The Emperor/King of the Subben Empire.
  • Disproportionate Retribution:
    • He hires Karl as his cameraman during the episode. The reason he lost his previous cameraman? He filmed the gladiatorial duels in portrait, so Porkius had him executed.
Porkius: Where are we gonna post our gladiator fights, TikTok? I think not!
    • The reason he has Jackie execute Karl is because Karl left the lens cap on the camera.
  • Eye Scream: Implied. He utilizes a red prosthetic eye on his right side, next to his normal black "pig" eye on his left side. What happened to his previous right eye is never stated.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Upon learning Bartholomew's name, he asks Karl why everyone in his Empire had cringe names, despite the fact that he was named Porkius of all things. This is possibly subverted in that Porcius (pronounced the same, but note the spelling) was a nomen (clan/family name) used in Ancient Roman times... but by modern standards, it's definitely a "cringe" name.
  • Large Ham: He has a very loud personality and speaks with a loud and hearty voice.
  • Pig Man: Once again, the character Technoblade plays takes on the appearance of an anthropomorphic pig.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Porkius regards John poorly for having a bland name, so much that he uses a royal decree to rename the guy several times throughout the episode.

Jackie

Played by: Tubbo
An unwilling gladiator who was plucked off the streets.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: At first glance, Jackie seems to be a kind-hearted, enthusiastic, and naĂŻve kid. In reality, he is also quite vicious and eager to kill, which allows him to win the gladiator duels in the end. This is foreshadowed by the fact that he was once arrested for getting into a knife fight.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His father used to work in an inn, so Jackie had to deal with many drunk people. Then someone stabbed his father while he was manning the counter late at night, and thus Jackie turned to a life of stabbing people.
  • Evil Orphan: Downplayed. He is a presumably orphaned teenager with a history of violence, but is also genuinely quite friendly.
  • Identical Stranger: He looks like Tubbo's normal skin but wears a different outfit.
  • Missing Mom: When asked about his upbringing, his mother is never mentioned.

Laggius Maximus

Played by: Fundy
A gladiator known for "lagging".
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He wears a pair of red-tinted goggles, but is never seen wearing them. Enforced in that it's a Minecraft skin.
  • Meaningful Name: His name 'translates' to "maximum lag", and he is known for "lagging", thus his inability to comprehend what is really happening around him and a tendency to lose fights.

Bartholomew

Played by: Jack Manifold
"I'd like a mead, please!"
A gladiator who easily got drunk.

Watson

Played by: Philza
"So you're saying there's a chance I can destroy this fool?"
A skilled archer and gladiator.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He shows signs of being one.
Bartholomew: Aw, fuck! Aw, it's bright. Aw– aw, shit, aw... oh my God...
Watson: Yes, welcome to the land of the living, Bartholomew.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: After losing in the first round to Bartholomew, who was so drunk he barely knew where he was, Watson spends the rest of the story at the table with Bartholomew, drinking heavily.
  • Epic Fail: He's a Master Archer who was beat out of the running to become General by a drunk man. To be fair, Porkius VII switched on the low gravitation setting for the fight, i.e. Executive Meddling, which made it much more difficult for him to aim well. invoked
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He wears a pair of white-tinted goggles, but is never seen wearing them. Enforced in that it's a Minecraft skin.
  • Icy Grey Eyes: He's a snarky, proud Aloof Archer with grey eyes.
  • Master Archer: He's a very skilled archer.
  • No Gravity for You: While the low gravitation setting for his gladiator fight is meant to be a gimmick for that fight alone, Watson ends up losing his fight because of this as he can no longer aim well with the gravity being messed up.

Levi

Played by: Punz
"I like puns!"
A gladiator.
  • Training from Hell: When he was younger, he had to fight his brothers and sisters for food and clothes, which allowed him to become a very proficient fighter.
  • Third-Person Person: He likes repeating his name, as shown by him talking in the third person at times.

Genevieve

Played by: Hannahxxrose
"I have to say that I've been training my whole life for this, and I think there's far too many men around here, and I think a woman has to come up on top."
A gladiator who is confident in her abilities.

John

Played by: Sapnap
A gladiator who is treated poorly due to not having a "cool" name, but is a fierce fighter nonetheless.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets renamed to 'Ugly' and 'Grievous' by Porkius, and throughout his entire preliminary duel, Porkius actively attempts to sabotage him by shooting arrows at him.
  • In-Series Nickname: He is called "Old Sap" several times throughout the episode, especially before everyone knew what his name was.
  • Special Person, Normal Name: He is among the people who had a shot at becoming the General of the Empire's armed forces... and is named John.
  • Unfortunate Names: He is regarded to have one, being named something as bland as 'John', to the point that Porkius uses a royal decree to name him something more distinctive.

Edward

Played by: BadBoyHalo

  • Ambition Is Evil: He cares only for himself and craves the position of Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces and will stop at nothing to achieve it.
  • Graceful Loser: Despite losing his fight against John/Ugly/Grievous, Edward gives encouragement to him before the final duel, believing that Grievous could win after besting him.

Ran

Played by: Ranboo
A mysterious gladiator.
  • Awesome Mc Cool Name: He is regarded to have this In-Universe, to the point that this is the reason he is allowed into the semi-finals of the gladiator duels without going through a preliminary match.
  • Mysterious Past: He refuses to talk about his background.
  • The Quiet One: He usually likes to sum up sentences in few words or leave the sentence on a cliffhanger.
  • The Stoic: He doesn't express his emotions much.

Visitors of the Lost City of Mizu
A terrible place from many years in the future. It was told that 4 brave fishermen went in, looking for stories to tell for themselves, but ended up only meeting the same fate as the many residents of this once happy city.

Isaac

Played by: KarlJacobs
One of the four fishermen who discovered the eponymous lost city following a note left by a mysterious stranger. He was killed by Ranbob in Dream's room.
  • Blue Is Heroic: He wears a blue shirt and is the leader of the fishermen who went exploring.
  • Dope Slap: He delivers one to Cletus whenever he is acting weirdly.
  • Only Sane Man: He is more aware of his surroundings than his peers, and focuses on the mission at hand.

Benjamin

Played by: BadBoyHalo
One of the four fishermen who discovered the eponymous lost city. He was killed after failing to complete the parkour he was selected to do in the secret room.
  • Badass Longcoat: He wears a double-breasted brown one with golden buttons, and explores a long-lost underwater city with his friends.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: He seemed to have an appreciation for 'classy'-styled things, stating that he liked Ranbob's shoes and that he appeared "dapper".
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He dons a pair of dark brown goggles that have dark blue-tinted lenses.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He is often referred to as "Benji".
  • Profanity Police: Like the man who plays him, he often interjects "language" whenever someone curses.

Cletus

Played by: Quackity
One of the four fishermen who discovered the eponymous lost city. He burned to death while retrieving a book from the tree in the city's dome, but successfully passed the book to Isaac before dying.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: His first instinct upon meeting Ranbob is to start sniffing him, earning him a Dope Slap from Isaac.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He wears a pair of green-tinted goggles, but is never seen wearing them. Enforced as it's a Minecraft skin.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's loud, rambunctious, and seemingly always looking for a fight.

Charles

Played by: Ranboo
One of the four fishermen who discovered the eponymous lost city. He was killed by Ranbob in Dream's room.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He sports copper googles with orange tinted lenses, but is never seen wearing them. Enforced as it's a Minecraft skin.
  • The Quiet One: He's not the most talkative person in the group.

Ranbob

Played by: Dream
"Nobody leaves here."
A distant descendant of Ranboo and the keeper of the lost city.
  • Affably Evil: Though he is a very polite individual, he ends up being the Big Bad of the episode, killing Charles and Isaac in Dream's secret room.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: He idolizes Dream and kills the adventurers in the Secret Room near the end of the stream.
  • Forgetful Jones: Like his ancestor, he appears to have some memory issues.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Possibly. Ranbob says that Mizu had been abandoned for many years other than himself, and it is implied that he lured many other visitors to the city to slaughter them, as evident by the bloodstains in the floor of the underwater city, and Ranbob's claim that nobody leaves the City of Mizu. However, the reason for the other residents of Mizu leaving the place behind is never stated, though it's also possible that Ranbob killed the other citizens of Mizu at one point before the fishers' arrival.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: He wears a pair of gold-framed goggles, but is never seen wearing them. Enforced as it's a Minecraft skin.
  • Hero Killer: He kills both Charles and Isaac at the end of their adventure.
  • Mysterious Past: He claims descent from Ranboo, but he wasn't around when the city was built. However, he also has some memory issues and is indicated to have almost forgotten his own name, which means what he tells the fishermen about himself might not even be the truth, and this isn't even going into other speculations about his identity.
  • Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid: Due to being descended from Ranboo, it would be impossible for him to be fully human anyway, which makes him at least part-Enderman.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He wears a black and white suit.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: Ranbob bore a strikingly resemblance to Ranboo, his distant ancestor.

Participants of the Labyrinth of Ceaseless Agony
The Labyrinth of Ceaseless Agony is set a few generations in the future of "The Pit" and "The Lost City of Mizu", where the participants must finish the Maze by sundown.

Frodo Haggins

Played by: Foolish

George Billiam

Played by: Tubbo
The brother of Hamilton, and a descendant of Sir Billiam.
  • Ambiguously Related: Hamilton and George Billiam claim descent from the "legendary" Sir Billiam, but it's not stated whether they're descended from Sir Billiam III from "The Masquerade" specifically, or another bearer of the name and title.
  • Pig Man: He is an anthropomorphic pig like his brother.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He looks a lot alike to his brother.

Hamilton

Played by: Technoblade
The brother of George Billiam, and a descendant of Sir Billiam.
  • Ambiguously Related: Hamilton and George Billiam claim descent from the "legendary" Sir Billiam, but it's not stated whether they're descended from Sir Billiam III from "The Masquerade" specifically, or another bearer of the name and title.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Downplayed. While Hamilton doesn't show this side of him much, he expresses annoyance at how every other person who died in the Labyrinth other than his brother keeps coming Back from the Dead.
  • Only Sane Man: Half the time, Hamilton acts as the voice of reason who's trying to actually find a way through the Labyrinth rather than pettily squabbling with each other, and is the one to complete the required challenges or find the way through them half the time.
  • Pig Man: As usual with all the other characters played by Technoblade, he's this.
  • A Pig Named "Porkchop": What else do you expect from a Pig Man named Hamilton?
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He looks a lot alike to his brother.

Mike Hunt

Played by: Sapnap

Orion

Played by: BadBoyHalo

Parker

Played by: Punz

  • In-Series Nickname: Parker is only really called this in his introduction; everyone else calls him "Blondie".
  • The Reveal: From the characters' introductions, everyone else had been wondering what was in Parker's holster. After completing the second puzzle (a parkour challenge), Parker reveals what's been in it the whole time — Pills' medicine.

"Qock Pills"

Played by: Quackity
"I HAVE A FLACCID PENIS, I NEED VIAGRA!"
An highly confused old man who claims to have a flaccid penis, and spends most of his appearance relentlessly searching for his pills.

Toby

Played by: GeorgeNotFound

  • Colorblind Confusion: Implied. Upon entering a room with four sections which have different-coloured walls, Toby observes that the colours of the walls were white, green, red, and "blue or purple", which indicates he struggles to tell the difference between the latter two (the section was purple, for the record).
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Downplayed. In the final puzzle, Toby announces to the group that he has found the "penultimate"note  wither rose required to complete the puzzle.

Mr. Cicle

Played by: Slimecicle
"This maze is full of puzzles and challenges the likes of which that none of us has ever seen and it's your job to get through them all and become champion, but of course if any of you are still in the labyrinth when the sun sets... Don't be in the labyrinth when the sun sets. Welp! Good luck out there, I'm really rootin' for ya."
The host of the Labyrinth of Ceaseless Agony.
  • Affably Evil: Relatively speaking, Mr. Cicle is quite amicable towards the participants.
  • Anti-Villain: In spite of being the main antagonist of the episode, Mr. Cicle is a very likeable fella, in part due to his humorous personality and as the ending implies, that he's just as much of a victim of the Labyrinth as the participants within the maze.
  • Forced into Evil: The ending implies that Mr. Cicle is just as trapped in the Labyrinth as the participants.
  • Meaningful Name: As his name foreshadows, the Labyrinth creates an endless cycle.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Mr. Cicle wears a suit with green and white stripes.
  • The Television Talks Back: Although his video messages initially seem as if they're pre-recorded, it's revealed during the final challenges that the feed is actually live when he directly addresses the participants' progress.

Others

    The Inbetween
Overseer Played by: Jack Manifold
"Don't stray from the path."
The Inbetween is a massive white castle created by DreamXD that Karl visits after his trips in time. It presents itself as a friend, wanting to help Karl hone his time traveling abilities. It is ruled by a demigod Overseer.
  • Another Dimension: It served as a hub world of sorts for Karl's time travelling adventures.
  • Arc Words:
    • "Don't stray from the path."
    • "Fear not. This is not a place to provoke harm, but a place to feel at ease."
  • Arc Symbol:
    • Wither roses, which accompany all of its messages to Karl.
    • The Inbetween signs all its messages with ":]".
  • Berserk Button: Karl straying from the path (i.e. exploring in places the Inbetween doesn't want him to) really makes it mad. When he does it repeatedly, it starts to openly threaten him, prompting him to run away to the Other Side.
  • Color Motif: White. Almost the entire Inbetween is white, symbolizing purity... and indirectly, oblivion.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: The Inbetween is entirely white, and its books are attached to potted wither roses. The Other Side is entirely black, and its books are attached to potted white tulips.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The Overseer of the Inbetween has No Name Given and is addressed as that.
  • Faux Affably Evil: It initially sounds very cordial when speaking to Karl, but when Karl starts to "stray from the path" more and more, it goes as far as to openly threaten him.
  • Flower Motifs: Wither roses. While roses traditionally carry the meaning of love, they can also refer to secrecy, and black roses in particular mean 'death', implying the hidden ominousness of the location. It doesn't help that wither roses in Minecraft give the wither effect to those who touch them.
  • Foil: To the Other Side. The Inbetween is bright white, almost sterile-looking, the weather is always sunny, and while talking to Karl, it's patronizing and uses a lot of flowery language. The Other Side is black, with gothic decorations and otherworldly plant life, the weather is always rainy and foggy, and while talking to Karl, it's blunt and brutally honest, treating him like a peer instead of a child.
  • Gaslighting: After Karl finds the secret room he found one trip earlier completely covered in blood, the Inbetween tries to convince him he's just hallucinating, and that his deteriorating mind can't be trusted.
The Inbetween: I can tell you aren't yourself as much lately... Must be having some crazy terrible and skewed imagination! I assure you, this is not a place to provoke harm, but a place to feel at ease. Don't trust the illusions, they are only your mind deteriorating. Don't trust anything except for the path. Just stick to the path, and read the books :]
  • Genius Loci: The castle of the Inbetween is revealed to be alive and sentient.
  • Light Is Not Good: The Inbetween's color palette consists entirely of whites and light greys, and it's revealed it has some rather unsettling plans for Karl, punctuated by its gaslighting tendencies.
  • Order Is Not Good: The Inbetween might be trying to keep the 'status quo' and make sure Karl doesn't "stray from the path", but when the aforementioned 'status quo' involves the guy in question being forced to undergo Loss of Identity to the point of a Fate Worse than Death, it's no wonder Karl ran for the portal the moment he found out the Inbetween's intentions.
  • Order Versus Chaos: The Inbetween represents Order and stagnation, with its insistence on Karl "not straying from the path" and being willing to gaslight and threaten him into staying in the Inbetween and lose his identity wandering it.

    The Other Side
Overseer Played by: Jack Manifold
"You're home now."
The Other Side is a massive black castle created by DreamXD that Karl finds after escaping the Inbetween. It's later revealed to store Karl's memories from his travels, and the longer he stays there, the more he can bring back the people he's met. It is ruled by a demigod Overseer.
  • Another Dimension: It appears to be a mirror version of the Inbetween and is connected to it via portal.
  • Arc Symbol: White tulips, which accompany all of its messages to Karl.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: The Inbetween is white, and its books are attached to potted wither roses. The Other Side is black, and its books are attached to potted white tulips.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The Other Side's color palette consists entirely of blacks and dark reds, and it seems to be genuinely trying to help Karl keep his memories intact.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The Overseer of the Other Side has No Name Given and is addressed as that.
  • Flower Motifs: White tulips. They mean 'I'm sorry' or 'my condolences', and also carry meanings of purity, honor, holiness, worthiness, and forgiveness.
  • Foil: To the Inbetween. While the Inbetween's most recognizable phrase is "don't stray from the path", The Other Side's first message to Karl when he enters shows us how much more benevolent it is by instead saying "let's explore more later". A message less controlling, and one that shows that the Other Side has no secrets it wants to be kept hidden, no unknown dangers, and truly wants to share itself with Karl.
  • Order Versus Chaos: The Other Side represents Chaos and freedom, encouraging Karl to go through the portal to access it and break away from the Inbetween's control.
  • Spirit Advisor: It serves as one to Karl while he is in the Inbetween during the end of The Haunted Mansion and The Pit, warning Karl that the Inbetween has more sinister intentions than what it presents in the former, and directing him to the portal which would help him escape from the Inbetween in the latter.
The Other Side: Follow the torches
The Other Side: It can't follow you through the portal
The Other Side: You'll be home soon
The Other Side: Keep going! Hurry!
The Other Side: For your friends
The Other Side: Protect your stories
