Main Characters

    Kageko Tadokoro

  • Ahoge: A big ol' strand of it too.
  • Animal-Eared Headband: A gift from Nikaidou. Once she wears it, Nikaidou nearly suffers Cuteness Overload.
  • Beautiful All Along: All it takes is a hairstyle change for a group of students to take notice of her cuteness. Kageko herself isn't quite comfortable with the hairstyle or the attention, but is willing to show Sakurako.
  • Bully Magnet: Has had many bullies in Middle School; Male and female.
  • Bullied into Depression: Early in the manga, it's made clear that bullying she's dealt with from her former and current classmates has left her withdrawn and sullen with her only outlet being her artwork, which is why Nikaidou's words of encouragement moved her to Tears of Joy.
  • Character Title: She's the Tadokoro-san.
  • Creepy Loner Girl: Her classmates' impression of her through Middle School and High School.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Downplayed example. She does sport these from time to time, adding to her perceived gloomy appearance.
  • Cuddle Bug: Nikaidou never misses the opportunity to hug her whether or not they're alone or in public, many times to her embarrassment if it's the latter.
  • Damsel in Distress: In two separate occasions. First, she finds herself the target of Kirigaya, a past bully, who plans on doing it again. And later on, another gang of male bullies surround her in an alley with less than wholesome intentions for her. Luckily, Kageko has a Knight in Shining Armor Action Girlfriend there to take out the trash.
  • Endearingly Dorky: The first thing that draws Nikaidou to her is the fact that she runs off blushing when her classmates notice her drawing manga.
  • Gamer Girl: A big fan of the Survival/Horror video games.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Her interests in seinen manga, action films and First-Person Shooter/Horror-themed video games come in stark contrast with her personality. She gives Sakurako a DVD of her favorite movie; Day Hard, an action film.
  • Heroic BSoD: After her manuscript is rejected in a rather belittling manner by an editor, she finds herself unable to draw.
  • I Can't Believe A Girl Like You Would Notice Me: Prior to their Relationship Upgrade, Kageko finds it strange that someone like Sakurako would take an interest in her and states that it would be best if they didn't hang out with each other. Sakurako rebuffs this immediately.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: After watching Sakurako lay a savage beatdown on her would-be attackers, she stares at her as if enchanted, with little hearts in her eyes. In ensuing chapters, her heart races in the presence of Sakurako.
  • Meaningful Name: Kage (shadow) and ko (child). Befitting a reserved (at first) girl with dark hair.
  • Pen Name: In her works, she goes by the name of inko-sensei, which is rather close to her actual name.
  • Prone to Tears: Kageko is a rather sensitive girl. More often than not, any heartfelt talk with Sakurako will leave her in tears.
  • Sequential Artist: She's an aspiring manga artist.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's not comfortable with being seen as she indulges in her hobbies. When she is seen drawing, she has a tendency to run off.
  • Supreme Chef: Unlike her mom, who's a Lethal Chef.
  • The Tease: She knows, to a certain extent, how much Sakurako is into her and from time to time uses it to her advantage. In Chapter 20, she makes Sakurako melt by blowing in her ear after she begs her for a kiss.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Since her relationship with Sakurako began, she's noted as smiling more. Later on, more of her classmates begin approaching her on friendlier terms.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Kageko tends to hide her face and body through unflattering clothes and hairstyles. It's shown that she gets a lot of attention when she lets hair down and wears fashionable clothes.
  • What Is This Feeling?: After Sakurako lowers the boom on her would-be attackers, Kageko is confused as to why her heart is pounding out of her chest when in Sakurako's presence.
  • When She Smiles: Starts out as being very sullen, but when she smiles for the first time in chapter 5, Nikaidou finds it adorable. From that point on, she smiles more frequently.

    Sakurako Nikaidou

  • The Ace: There are very few things that she has an equal. She's considered beautiful by all of her peers, she's a rich young lady, and she has the skills to protect her love interest from projectiles and people who wish her harm.
  • Action Girlfriend: To Kageko. She will absolutely not let anyone or anything hurt her girlfriend.
  • Allergic to Love: She breaks out into High-Pressure Emotion and then faints as she models for Kageko's portrait of her in Chapter 4. She's particularly anxious at both the idea of Tadokoro drawing her and that it's the first time that they're alone together in an empty room. In Chapter 66 where she finds herself alone with an unusually sexually assertive Kageko, she blacks out after being kissed on her ear.
  • Ass-Kicking Pose: Several throughout the webcomic, but particularly in Chapter 61 where she prepares to face off against a trio of bullies/rapists.
  • Attractiveness Isolation: Her classmates seem to be afraid of approaching her, despite their admiration for her.
  • Badass Adorable: A beautiful, refined Ojou who kicks a lot of ass and is still goofy and awkward around her girlfriend.
  • Battle Aura: Releases one in the form of a dragon in Chapter 108 as her Unknown Rival Mirei pushes her Berserk Button by restraining Kageko.
  • Bishie Sparkle: From time to time.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: She would really like to get into Tadokoro's pants and has an active imagination about doing so, but restrains herself according to her girlfriend's wishes.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: In Chapter 26, whilst Tadokoro is giving Kirigaya a Cooldown Hug while forgiving her for her misdeeds, Nikaidou forcibly removes the two of them while stating she is the only one who's allowed to cling to Tadokoro.
  • The Champion: If it's for Kageko, Sakurako will do anything. She's Kageko's girlfriend, protector, muse, and moral support all in one.
  • Covert Pervert: When she, Kageko and Rui visit a manga shop in Chapters 93-96, she picks up a doujinshi that happens to be of the Yuri R-18 variety. At first, she recoils in horror, but later asks Rui in confidence how she can order them while being underage. In Chapter 111, said R-18 yuri manga arrives at her residence.
  • Dissonant Serenity: After discovering that Kirigaya used to bully Tadokoro and may start doing so again, she tells Kirigaya (who has a crush on her) to never speak to either one of them again and that she hates her guts, all with a smile on her face.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Though she is a dignified, upstanding young lady on the surface, when she's in the presence of her girlfriend she becomes an awkward, fawning goofball. Kageko finds the contrast adorable about her.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: She has no shortage of admirers, male and particularly female. To wit, Valentine's Day in Japan is a holiday where girls usually give chocolates to boys. Sakurako finds her shoe locker overflowing with chocolate during said day.
  • Fan of Underdog: For her girlfriend. Whereas most of the students in her class find her to be creepy or gloomy, she happens to love everything about Kageko.
  • The Glomp: Has a tendency to do this to Kageko.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: At the end of the second volume, she becomes jealous of Kageko getting approached by more of their classmates. She snaps out of it when Kageko reassures her that no matter how many new friends she makes, Sakurako will always be her love.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: On school grounds, she has admirers lined up to gaze at her from a reasonable distance.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Whenever Kageko is in danger, Sakurako will be there in seconds to save her.
  • Instant Expert: Two examples.
    • She had no prior experience at playing FPS Games, but she agrees to play on Kageko's behest. When Kageko eventually loses, she asks Sakurako to avenge her. Sakurako finishes the game with a perfect score.
    • Kageko asks her to draw backgrounds in a rush to complete her manga manuscript. The backgrounds are in... stark contrast at first, but Sakurako picks up screentones and flashes rather quickly.
  • Lecherous Licking: Sakurako and Kageko spend Valentine's Day feeding each other chocolate. Sakurako licks Kageko's finger and she eats the chocolate. She apologizes as she spaced out and didn't do it intentionally… probably.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: As Sakurako comes into closer proximity with Kageko, her brain seems to malfunction more often.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: A downplayed example. She makes it her mission to break the withdrawn Kageko out of her shell and inspire confidence within her. In response to Kageko's initial manuscript being rejected and being down about it, Sakurako whisks her away on a date to the largest arcade in Japan. Some time later, Kageko is inspired by her enough to make her the inspiration of a character she created for a new manga.
  • Meaningful Name: Contrasting with Kageko above, Sakura (cherry blossoms) are generally seen as pleasant and beautiful, which fits since she is the bright, popular girl at school.
  • The Muse: Implied in an earlier chapter, where Kageko offhandedly sketched a likeness of her in her manga. Played straight later; After taking on three would-be rapists and utterly crushing them, Kageko found her inspiration to continue drawing manga… with her badass girlfriend as the lead character.
  • No Girl Wants An Amazon: After taking out Kageko's would-be assailants in Chapter 62, an affection-starved Sakurako notices that Kageko has been avoiding her. She tearfully comes to this conclusion that seeing her fight has made her afraid. She couldn't be further from the truth.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Once more, in regards to Kageko. She sticks to her girlfriend like glue.
  • Ojou: To wit, for her date with Kageko, she shows up in a stretch limousine. Several maids are also present at her house in Chapter 57.
  • Only Friend: To Kageko at first. Sakurako wanted more than that, and she got it.
  • Perverted Drooling: As she has awakened from several fantasies of what an intimate scenario with Kageko may look like, she's shown with drool running down her lips and at the corners of her mouth.
  • Perverted Sniffing: She can't seem to get enough of Tadokoro's scent. During their sleepover, she has to stop herself from sniffing Kageko's bed and Kageko's nightclothes that she borrows.
  • Rebellious Princess: Downplayed example. Her upbringing involved her adhering to all of her father's wishes, but came to hate it. Therefore, she started doing things the way she wants to, which started with enrolling in a regular High School as opposed to an elite school where her Unknown Rival Mirei attends.
  • Rich Boredom: Suffered from a minor case of this, hence why she decided to enroll in a public high school rather than a private one.
  • School Idol: Though she really wishes she weren't.
  • Single Girl Seeks Most Popular Guy: Inverted. She is the idol of the school who pursues a relationship with the otherwise plain artist Kageko.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: She regularly fawns over Kageko, be it privately or in Kageko's presence. It appears that she's been infatuated with Kageko well before the events of the manga/webcomic.
  • Stalker with a Crush: The first few chapters depict her watching Tadokoro from a distance while gushing over her. She lampshades this in a manga-exclusive mini chapter.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Very tall and very gorgeous. When she arrives for their date, Kageko likens her to a goddess.
  • Tranquil Fury: In contrast to her personality when in the presence of her girlfriend, she's very cool and calm when it comes to protecting said girlfriend. She tells off Kirigaya and her ways with a smiling face and crushes Kageko's male assailants in seconds without breaking a sweat.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Aside from bluntly telling off Kirigaya in regards to her bullying her girlfriend, she also displays feats of superhuman strength from time-to-time in lieu of protecting Kageko.
    • Offhandedly catching a thrown baseball that was making a beeline for Tadokoro's head, barehanded.
    • Saves Tadokoro from an oncoming truck by sprinting across the street, taking Tadokoro is a Bridal Carry, and dashing to safety before the truck hits her.
    • Kicks away a flying juice box meant for Tadokoro's head. She does this without noticing and manages to directly strike the assailant with said juice box.
    • Laid waste to Tadokoro's former male bullies who had less than savory intentions for her girlfriend in an alleyway in 5 seconds.
    • Springs into action when Mirei restrains Kageko and has no trouble defeating her in Chapters 108-109.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: In Nikaidou's case, spiders and insects.

    Kirigaya

  • Affectionate Nickname: Her unnamed friend calls her 'Kiri-chan'.
  • The Bully: The first of Tadokoro's bullies introduced in the manga.
  • Crush Blush: Chapter 42. After Kageko thanks her for defending her against bullies, she sports a blush and is momentarily rendered speechless.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: As she secretly recorded Kageko being bullied by her two classmates in Chapter 41, she had every intention of posting it online, leading to widespread harassment for the bullies and their probable expulsion from school. The bullies quickly apologize for their treatment.
  • Expressive Accessory: As she's plotting to ruin the lives of Tadokoro's latest bullies, her hairclips turn upward, making them appear like devil horns.
  • For the Evulz: Was intent on bullying Kageko once again because she had nothing better to do at the time.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: At first, she has a crush on Nikaidou and is intensely jealous of Kageko's newfound closeness to her.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Goes through one after an encounter with Sakurako makes her realize how disgusting her actions have been.
  • I Hate Past Me: As she defends Kageko from bullies, she derisively notes that she used to engage in lame stuff like that.
  • Tears of Remorse: Tearfully apologizes to Tadokoro after Nikaidou tells her off.
  • Tomboy: With her short hair and boyish attitude, she's definitely one of these.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: In the Adaptation Expansion of Chapter 25, Kirigaya in Middle School wanted to make as many friends as possible and get along with everyone.
  • Victim-Blaming: Attempts to justify her past actions by stating that if Tadokoro didn't like her treatment, she should've just spoken up about it. Understandably, Nikaidou rejects this line of thinking.

    Ms. Tadokoro

    Kyouji Toraiwa

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Manages to destroy Kageko's confidence about her manga with a smile on his face.
  • Break Them by Talking: His preferred method of discouraging aspiring manga authors. By the accounts of his co-workers, Kageko is not the first victim of his.
  • Hate Sink: His sharp criticisms of Kageko's work earn him scorn from other characters and readers alike. Let's just say that readers wouldn't have a problem if Sakurako got to him.
  • Humiliation Conga: After Rui admits to not accepting the Rookie manga award on account of her not writing the story, he gets exposed for being a plagiarist. He's then fired as an editor in short order. Attempting to save his job, he tries to get Kageko on his side, only for Sakurako to forcefully remove him from her by just about breaking his arm. Continuing his frenzy, he bumps into a delivery guy and is scalded by hot coffee and finally trips on his way out of the door, falling down a flight of stairs.
  • Slasher Smile: Displays this as his co-workers try to figure out why he would go out of his way to destroy the confidence of the artists who work with him.
  • Smug Snake: Gloats on about having better artists under his watch than Ooyama.

    Hitomi Ooyama

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: She appears in the manga version of Chapter 44 to call out Toraiwa after he chews up Kageko's work. She doesn't appear in the webcomic until Chapter 70.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Sports a large pair of glasses which she wears at all times.
  • Fangirl: Of Kageko's work.
  • Hot-Blooded: When it comes to competition with Toraiwa, whom she strongly dislikes.
  • Squee: She's delighted with Kageko's reaction to her complimenting her work.

    Rui Ranbara

  • Alliterative Name: Her name is Rui Ranbara.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Her clothing features a lot of frills and ribbons. Kageko notes to herself that Rui looks like a doll.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Wears an eyepatch with a skull over her right eye. Whether it's a Chuunibyou thing or a power thing remains to be seen.
    • The fact that she takes it off during the Shopping Arc proves it to be purely for looks.
  • Nice Girl: Despite winning the rookie manga award she and Tadokoro were competing for, she throws it away on account of not having actually written the manga she submitted, the manuscript was stolen by Toraiwa.
  • Ojou Ringlets: Her hair consists of Girlish Pigtails that end with not two, but 4 curls of these, varying in size from the outside in.
  • Older Than They Look: She looks about Kageko's age, but is actually 24 years old.
  • The Rival: Introduced as one to Kageko, though she quickly becomes friends with her after she reveals that her manga was written by someone else.
    • Friendly Rival: Kageko and her are after the same rookie manga artist award. The first thing she does is ask to exchange Line accounts with Kageko, and then upon observing Kageko's work, spreads the word of her work among her Social Media followers to help her get closer to Kageko. Toraiwa has to pull her away from Kageko during their first meeting to keep her from attempting to connect with her even further.
    • Privileged Rival: She has the distinction of being a well-known video game and Light Novel illustrator with 200,000 followers on social media making her foray into manga whereas Kageko has very little followers and is just starting out as a manga artist.

    Mirei Kotomori

  • Always Someone Better: Sakurako is this to her. Mirei was disappointed in Sakurako not attending the same high school as she does. Attempting to best Sakurako was a motivation for her.
  • Blood Knight: Confronted Sakurako with the purpose of fighting her in hand-to-hand combat and even after being outmaneuvered, seeks to continue fighting her.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Sakurako has no intention to fight her—until she takes Kageko as a hostage.
  • Modesty Shorts: As she relies on lots of strikes and kicks during combat, she wears a pair of shorts underneath her school uniform.
  • Ojou: Goes to an elite school that she expected Sakurako to also enroll in. After she's defeated by Sakurako, she's picked up in an expensive-looking car. Her exclusive chapter reveals that she has her own fangirls at the school she attends.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Pops up occasionally at Futsuu High School to challenge Sakurako to a fight. Kageko seems to be used to it. Sakurako is annoyed by it.
  • Unknown Rival: To Sakurako. They went to the same Middle School together and she is frustrated with the fact that Sakurako doesn't remember her.
