Alter Ego: Phage

Host To: Phage

First Appearance: Absolute Carnage: Speration Axiety

A young boy taken over by the Phage symbiote after it was corrupted by Knull.

  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His full name was never revealed.
  • Spider Limbs: One of the hallmarks of his Phage form was that the symbiote's customary back-spikes extended into blade-tipped arachnoid limbs.

    Buck Cashman

Buck Cashman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/222470_17560_bullet.jpg

Alter Ego: Bullet, Phage

Host To: Phage

First Appearance: Daredevil Vol. 1 #250 (January 1988)

    Cal Henriksen

Alter Ego: Agent Venom

Host To: Venom

First Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #654

The first soldier recruited by Project Rebirth 2.0 to become Agent Venom, Cal Henriksen quickly lost control of the symbiote, forcing his superiors to terminate him.

  • Betrayal Insurance: He was surgically implanted with a bomb in case he ever lost control of the Venom symbiote, to keep him from going on a feeding frenzy. He almost immediately lost control of the symbiote, forcing his superiors to flip the switch to blow him up and retrieve the symbiote from his remains.
  • The Ghost: He is never seen — not even in flashbacks — but General Brad Dodge and Captain Katherine Glover repeatedly remind Flash Thompson of his fate and threaten to do the same to him if he doesn't toe the line.
  • Heroic Host: He was intended to be one as the supersoldier host of the Venom symbiote... but very quickly lost control of it.
  • Military Superhero: Like Flash Thompson after him, he was a soldier recruited by the government into a black-ops supersoldier program intending to weaponize the Venom symbiote.

    Carl Mach

Carl Mach

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3403901_phage_venom_separation_anxiety1.jpg

Alter Ego: Phage

Host To: Phage

First Appearance: Venom: Lethal Protector #4

A mercenary hired as private security by the Life Foundation, Carl Mach was bonded to the Phage symbiote — one of five offspring forcibly extracted from the Venom symbiote. Ostensibly the leader of the group, after the Life Foundation's plots were foiled, Carl and the others — Lasher, Riot, Agony, and Scream — attempted to solicit Eddie Brock's help in learning to use their symbiotes for good. When Donna Diego (Scream) succumbed to her schizophrenia and had a psychotic breakdown, Carl was murdered alongside the other Life Foundation symbiotes' hosts.

  • Avenging the Villain: It was implied that Carl had a crush on Leslie, and when all signs pointed to Eddie being her killer, Carl decided to stop negotiating, and start killing.
Carl: She's dead. He killed Leslie. Brock is a psychopath and he's got to die... TONIGHT!
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: Carl's weapon, contrasted with Lasher's primary weapon being tentacles.
  • Conjoined Eyes: The symbiote's eyes were conjoined when bonded to Carl.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Eddie Brock's, to be precise.
  • In the Back: How Scream killed Carl.
  • Leader Wannabe: Carl thought he was the leader of the Life Foundation Symbiotes, but the real boss was Scream.
  • No Mouth: Rico follows the Heroic Host=No Mouth trend, making his pseudonym (which more or less means "devour") an Ironic Nickname.

    Changmire

Changmire

Host To: Emperor N'Jadaka's symbiote

First Appearance: Black Panther Vol. 6 #2

    Claire Dixon

Claire Dixon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dixonraze.jpg

Alter Ego: Raze, Special Agent Claire Dixon

Host To: Raze

First Appearance: Carnage Vol. 2 #1

"No one controls me, Brock. I get it now — the symbiote is a tool. It makes us who we truly are. That's why I never trusted you. The symbiote exposed you as the killer you were born to be. Me? I'm a weapon!"

An FBI Agent assigned to hunt down Carnage as the leader of the Anti-Symbiote Task Force, and Eddie Brock's handler as Agent Toxin. She was infected with the Carnage symbiote's Darkhold-spawned offspring and became Raze, but was freed from his control and sacrificed herself to save her team from him. She was later resurrected by the Darkhold's eldritch magic, and returned to leading the Anti-Symbiote Task Force after Eddie went AWOL.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Victoria Montesi cuts off her right arm to free Toxin when she and Carnage grab him. Claire regenerates it thanks to her symbiote.
  • Back from the Dead: She died in Eddie Brock's arms, but the power of the Darkhold resurrected her and is implied to be influencing her behavior.
  • Bad Boss: She is condescending and downright hateful towards Eddie Brock, and was more than happy to kill him if it meant Carnage would die as well. She also had Mac Gargan outfitted with a taser powerful enough to knock him out, in case he went AWOL like he'd done with the Thunderbolts and Dark Avengers.
  • Badass Back: A Broodling of Chthon tries to attack her from behind while she's preoccupied with reading a journal left behind by 19th century whalers. The Raze symbiote promptly impales it on a dozen-odd tendrils without Claire even reacting.
  • Depower: She's stripped of her symbiote by Jubulile, but she retains a measure of eldritch power courtesy of the Darkhold.
  • Face–Monster Turn: She starts out as a but well-intentioned but prejudiced FBI agent, but is transformed into one of the very monsters she loathes... and outwardly embraces it. Inwardly, however, she suffers an existential crises as she tries to figure out where Claire Dixon ends and where Raze begins.
  • Fantastic Racism: She thinks Eddie Brock is just as much a monster as Cletus Kasady because of his actions as Venom, and because she thinks he willingly bonded to the Toxin symbiote.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When facing off against Spider-Woman, her eyes glow yellow as she draws on the Darkhold's power.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When Carnage attempts to impale the task force members with a flurry of tendrils, Claire shields her former team with her body and refuses to be healed afterwards.
  • Jagged Mouth: As Raze, she has black teeth that blend into the rest of her face, to the point where it appears she has No Mouth.
  • Just Following Orders: After returning from the dead she bears no ill-will to Eddie himself, capturing him because she was ordered to obtain his symbiote's latest offspring. Despite having a concussion, she saves Eddie from being killed by the Scorpion, and when told Venom's spawn was stillborn she sincerely apologized to him for his loss.
  • Living Weapon: She describes herself as being one after bonding to the Raze symbiote.
  • Only a Flesh Wound:
    • She's injured in a cave-in, but prioritizes putting a stop to Carnage over receiving medical treatment.
    • Despite suffering from a major concussion, she makes her way to Alchemax's xenobiology lab in order to stop the Scorpion from killing Eddie before passing out from her injuries.
  • Phrase Catcher: "Shut up, Brock." It's also her last words until her resurrection.
  • Reforged into a Minion: She's captured by Carnage, who uses her as a guinea pig to test his eldritch symbiote powers, turning her into Raze.
  • Start X to Stop X: The FBI's plan was to use monsters (Man-Wolf and Toxin) to stop a monster (Carnage). Dixon isn't very gung-ho about it, especially viewing using Toxin as an absolute last resort.
  • Transhuman Treachery: After becoming Raze, she declares herself to be a weapon. Her true thoughts on the matter are more complex, as she suffers an existential crisis due to Carnage's influence over her.
  • Unexplained Recovery: Claire pops back up in NYC helping the FBI recapture Eddie, who had since returned to being Venom. After she captures him, Eddie speculates that her exposure to the Darkhold's eldritch power through the Raze symbiote had something to do with it, and that she's not entirely who or what she was prior to her death.
Eddie: You died. On that island. You died in my arms.
Claire: Think about your lifestyle, Brock. Who do you know who hasn't died and turned up again? Didn't you die once?
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Eddie helped save her from being trapped in the mine, and she repays him by trying to bury him.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: She develops an interest in Jubulile van Scotter, who is also bonded to one of the Carnage symbiote's Darkhold-altered spawn.

    Cortland Kasady

Cortland Kasady

Click here to see as Plague

Alter Ego: Plague

Host To: Plague

First Appearance: Ruins of Ravencroft: Carnage #1

The ancestor of Cletus Kasady, Cortland was a 17th century English settler whose lover — Mary Ravencroft — was captured by a symbiote-worshipping cult. While attempting to rescue her, note  Cortland was captured and bonded to a symbiote, turning him into a bloodthirsty serial killer.

  • Beard of Evil: A full red beard and after becoming a symbiote worshipper, very evil.
  • Evil Redhead: Just like his distant descendant Cletus.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Prior to his run-in with the Others, he was an all-around decent person who dearly loved Molly Ravencroft. Afterwards, he became a bloodthirsty symbiote-worshipping cannibal.
  • In the Blood: Cortland being forcibly recruited into the symbiote-worshipping cult is implied to be the reason why his descendants Roscoe and Cletus were a violent abuser and a serial killer of unprecedented bloodlust respectively.
  • Life Drinker: As Plague, Cortland is able to drain the life-force from others.
  • Revenant Zombie: During Planet of the Symbiotes, Knull reanimates Cortland in the same way he did Cletus, bringing him back as symbiote-possessed corpse capable of absorbing the life-force of others.
  • Serial Killer: Cortland became the first American serial killer after being corrupted by the symbiote-worshipping cult.
  • Wingding Eyes: After being forcibly recruited by the symbiote-worshipping cult, he's shown with red spirals for irises.

    Corwin Jones

Corwin Jones

Alter Ego: Madness

Host To: Madness

First Appearance: Misery: Cult of Carnage #1 (May, 2023)

A terminally-ill former member of Alchemex's Guardsmen who betrays them to work for the Life Foundation.

  • Blessed with Suck: Corwin Jones gets a combination of both third and fourth flavors of this trope when he bonds with six different symbiotes. At first glance, having multiple symbiotes bonded to you should make you much more powerful. And it does... but it turns out that having multiple symbiotes bonded to you risks the side effect of creating a Mind Hive that the host has to struggle to keep under control, as opposed to if he had just bonded with just one or even two symbiotes. Because of the six different symbiotes messing with him and—unlike the Hybrid symbiote or Liz's own Misery symbiote—refusing to play nice, Corwin has to constantly fight their combined wills for control of his body, and Liz adding the Misery symbiote to his Madness symbiote is enough to completely overload him.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The final issue reveals that Corwin Jones, who happily backstabbed his coworkers at Alchemax and killed several of them, and maimed Liz Allan and spat in her face when she offered to help cure his terminal illness... has a daughter who he cares deeply about, the Madness symbiote using this to blackmail him into doing what they want.
  • From Camouflage to Criminal: Corwin was a soldier in the US Army until an undisclosed incident saw him dishonorably discharged and afflicted with a terminal illness. He was able to apply his military training and expertise to work for Alchemax as one of their Guardsmen, but double-crossed them to work for the Life Foundation before finally going AWOL under threat of the Madness symbiote harming his daughter.
  • Happy Fun Ball: Corwin Jones has an affinity for disguising bombs and drones as stuffed animals and dolls. Liz notes how creepy his vast collection of toys is even before they start attacking her.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gemma_shin_earth_616_and_agony_symbiote_earth_616_from_extreme_carnage_agony_vol_1_1.jpg
As Agony

Alter Ego: Agony

Host To: Agony

First Appearance: Extreme Carnage Alpha #1 (July, 2021)

Gemma Shin was the Deputy Communications Director of Senator Peter Krane who bonded to the Agony symbiote at some point following King in Black. She later joined Wilson Fisk's Thunderbolts as a liaison for the Friends of Humanity.

  • Boxed Crook: Daredevil (2022) reveals that Gemma and Agony were imprisoned in the Myrmidon supermax prison, at least until Daredevil and Doc Sasquatch break them out to help fight against the Punisher-led Hand, with the intention of rehabilitating them.
  • Breath Weapon: As Agony, she has corrosive saliva that she can spit gobs and jets of in order to melt the flesh off her opponents.
  • Collector of the Strange: She has taken to using the remains of her victims to create grotesque decorations for her apartment.
  • Dark Mistress: Gemma is framed as a romantic interest for Arthur Krane prior to the reveal that Arthur is the host of the Carnage symbiote. After Arthur is divested of the symbiote, Carnage sends Gemma to keep an eye on him — though she makes it clear that she's the one who's in-charge.
  • The Dragon: For Carnage due to being the only member of his hive that serves him willingly.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: When she was the Deputy Communications Director of Peter Krane's office, he and his staff treated her as the coffee girl. Even as the senior Communications Director she's not treated much better by her coworkers, who subject her to sexist remarks and backtalk.
  • Evil Hero: Despite symbiotes being public enemy #1, the Friends of Humanity's vocal condemnation of them, and being shown on camera melting and/or eating people during Carnage's assassination of Peter Krane, Agony is sent by Arthur Krane to join Wilson Fisk's Thunderbolts in Devil's Reign.
  • Mugging the Monster: She invokes it, killing a bunch of hoodlums who tried to mug her in Extreme Carnage: Agony.
  • Not Brainwashed: Unlike the other hosts of the Life Foundation symbiotes, she willingly embraced Agony and became Carnage's helper.
  • The Quisling: Unlike the other symbiote hosts, she willingly works with Agony and Carnage in their evil designs.
  • Serial Killer: Much like Carnage, she embraced killing people and taking their remains as trophies.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • Gemma hated having to put up with the sexism of Peter Krane's office, which is indicated to be one reason why she willingly joined Carnage's coup, but she nevertheless did so well enough to be made the Communications Director.
    • As a member of the Thunderbolts, Agony develops a particular dislike for her teammate Anton Vanko, aka Whiplash, and tries to eat him in Devil's Reign: Villains for Hire #1.

    Gorr

Gorr

Alter Ego: God Butcher; God of God Butchers

    Grace

Grace

Host To: Carnage

First Appearance: Misery: Cult of Carnage #1 (May, 2023)

A chimpanzee bonded to a strain of the Carnage symbiote.

  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Once Grace masters the ability to speak, she berates Dr. Steven and Liz Allan for performing inhumane experiments on her—culminating in bonding her to a sample of the Carnage symbiote and then adding Anti-Venom to the mix—and vengefully attempts to kill them. Liz protests that the experiments were meant to find cures for human illnesses, but this only makes Grace angrier.

    Hank Hensley

Hank Hensley

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/venom_vol_5_11_textless.jpg
As Sleeper Agent

Alter Ego: Sleeper Agent

Host To: Sleeper

First Appearance: Extreme Carnage Alpha #1 (July, 2021)

Hank was a veteran whom Flash Thompson befriended after his resurrection.

  • Bio-Armor: As the Sleeper Agent in Venom (2021), Hank sports a distinctly armored look, with a gas mask-looking face and pods of chemicals protruding from his arms and back.
  • In the Back: Carnage impales him from behind and leaves him for dead, only for the Sleeper symbiote to save his life.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Flash chooses not to tell him he's a symbiote host after the whole fiasco with Carnage. Though Sleeper goes back with the Brocks by Venom (2021), it secretly leaves a piece of itself in Hank that influences his actions.
  • The Mole:
    • He was giving Flash updates on the situation with Krane's campaign. Unfortunately, Carnage and Agony were already aware of it and try to kill him as soon as they no longer need him around.
    • In Venom (2021) he's compelled to join the Life Foundation as a Manchurian Agent by Sleeper, who activates him to help rescue Dylan.
  • Not Quite Dead: Impaled and left for dead by Carnage, he's saved from death by the Sleeper symbiote.

Alter Ego: Jubulile van Scotter

Host To: Unnamed symbiote, Toxin, Raze

First Appearance: Carnage Vol. 2 #6

A teenager from South Africa who had a chance encounter with Carnage while trying to circumnavigate the globe in her late father's boat, and was infected with an offshoot of his symbiote. Joining the Anti-Symbiote Task Force, Jubulile used her new psychic link to Carnage to help them track him. Absorbing the Toxin and Raze symbiotes into her own, Jubulile battled and defeated the eldritch god Chthon, returning to South Africa once the ordeal was over.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Cletus calls her Jujubee, initially by accident and later just to annoy her.
  • Attack Backfire: Cletus bonds her to a part of the Carnage symbiote to turn her into a minion. Instead it empowers her and enables her to escape him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When she's attacked by a Broodling of Chthon, she easily defeats it using her symbiote-augmented strength.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Jubulile almost literally does so, blasting the evil Elder God Chthon with a massive beam of light magic.
  • Failed a Spot Check: She failed to notice that Cletus's body had fully healed and his legs reappeared a few hours after she discovered him badly burned and legless.
  • Light 'em Up: After her symbiote manifests, one of its powers is firing beams of light energy.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jubulile is understandably terrified when the man she rescued turns into a monster right in front of her.
  • Protectorate: Eddie Brock seems surprisingly protective of her, considering she's bonded to a symbiote.
  • Psychic Link: As a result of having been bonded to the Carnage symbiote's Darkhold-corrupted spawn, she can sense Cletus's emotions and presence, view his memories, and shares his pain when he's hurt.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: After she's infected by the Darkhold-altered spawn of Carnage symbiote, her eyes turn solid red when she taps into its power.
  • Super Mode: When empowered by the Darkhold, her symbiote takes on the form of an angelic knight.
  • The Symbiote: Jubulile is infected with a Darkhold-augmented spawn of the Carnage symbiote, which she amalgamates Hybrid-style with the Toxin and Raze symbiotes to create a pink flight-capable symbiote. When further empowered by the Darkhold, it transforms into a white angelic knight, but disperses into wisps of pink and gold smoke after Chthon is vanquished, leaving the Toxin symbiote's status up in the air.
  • Tagalong Kid: She's a sixteen year-old girl with no combat experience, accompanying a team comprised of a Badass Normal soldier, a soldier-turned-alien werewolf, a symbiote-augmented former serial killer, and the half-human child of an Eldritch Abomination. Her navigational skills and ability to sense Carnage keep her from being The Load.

Alter Ego: Lasher, Hybrid

Host To: Lasher, Hybrid

First Appearance: Carnage, U.S.A. #2 (January, 2012)

A comatose German Shepherd war-dog, made the host of the Lasher symbiote. The sole surviving member of the Mercury Team after Carnage butchered them, she became the host of the Hybrid symbiote amalgam. With her symbiote corrupted by Knull, she was seemingly killed when they abandoned her to bond to a dysfunctional suburban family.

  • Ambiguous Gender: The dog has been referred to as male and female.
  • Handicapped Badass: The German Shepherd that serves as the symbiote's second host was in a coma, but that didn't stop her from putting the run on the Doppelgänger. As of Deadpool vs. Carnage, she's fully awake and active.
  • Heroic Dog: The German Shepherd, especially now that she's become the new Hybrid.
  • Jagged Mouth: In her first appearance, the Lasher Hound's mouth was lined by green fangs that blend into her snout.
  • Sole Survivor: The dog was the sole survivor of Carnage's massacre of Mercury Team, at least until Absolute Carnage: Seperation Anxiety.
  • Stock Animal Diet: After taking a chunk out of the Doppelgänger, Lasher settled down to finish off a half-eaten cow and was seen chomping down a huge bone.
  • Super-Senses: The symbiote-augmented German Shepherd could scent any target in a five-hundred mile radius.
  • Team Pet: The Lasher hound, even though it's the actual host of the symbiote.
  • Third Eye: The Lasher hound has an eye in the middle of her forehead.
  • Uncertain Doom: It's implied the Hybrid symbiote killed her in Absolute Carnage: Seperation Anxiety, as she isn't seen after they separate from her.

First Appearance: Venom #1; Venom #10 (as Venom); Absolute Carnage: Scream #1 (as Scream II)

"I was only Venom for a short time. But long enough. Long enough to do some damage. Long enough to earn some debt. Long enough to miss it."

Patricia Robinson was a communications specialist for the US Army, stationed in Antarctica. When a clone of the Venom symbiote was unleashed, it killed all of the personnel at her base, but Patricia fended it off, leaving her the sole survivor of the incident. She escaped with the aid of a nanorobotic alien known as the Suit, who, after implanting her with cybernetic augmentations, tricked the symbiote into bonding with her, the cybernetic implants allowing her to control it. Patricia was tricked into travelling to New York, many assuming her to be Venom, where her cybernetics malfunctioned and she lost control of the symbiote and fought Spider-Man and the real Venom before her cloned symbiote re-merged with the original Venom symbiote.

Years later, Patricia resurfaced, having trained to hunt down symbiotes using a small arsenal of anti-symbiote weaponry. Coming across the resurrected Scream symbiote, Patricia was taken over by it, and was sent to hunt Andi Benton before wrestling control back from the symbiote. Calling herself Scream, she attempted to save innocents while Carnage and his symbiote forces attempted to resurrect the symbiote god, Knull.

  • Body Horror: Patricia is knocked out, and wakes up bald, collared, and with a tube sticking out of the back of her skull. She is understandably upset.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She keeps her hair cut short in the "Shiver" arc of Venom Vol. 1 and Absolute Carnage: Scream.
  • Cyborg: The Suit turned Patricia into one to enable her to control the symbiote.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Absolute Carnage: Scream focuses on her for its first two issues before shifting to Andi Benton in its last, the Scream symbiote bonding to Andi after Patricia's death.
  • Evil Is Bigger: As Venom, she is depicted to be at a very large size.
  • Expy: In the "Shiver" arc of the Venom series, the Venom clone was a carbon copy of the Thing, to go with the Whole-Plot Reference.
  • Fan Disservice: There are a lot of creepy scenes involving Patricia and the Venom clone, which get so much worse after Patricia loses her hair and has metal things stuck in the back of her head.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Dies while trying to protect the injured Andi Benton.
  • Legacy Character:
    • Patricia was one of many hosts of the Venom symbiote's clone, Mania — and Absolute Carnage: Scream #1 reveals that she has a grudge against Andi Benton for "stealing" the symbiote and then losing it to Lee Price.
    • After stripping the Scream symbiote from Donna Diego's skeleton in Absolute Carnage: Scream #1, Patricia is taken over by it and has a brief mental dialogue with the symbiote — which had imprinted Donna's psyche into itself — before they're taken over by Knull.
  • Most Common Superpower: As revealed in Venom Vol. 1 #15, she's very busty, though it didn't show under her arctic gear.
  • Ms. Fanservice:
  • Out with a Bang: Patricia seduces Agent Whitaker, kills him, and impersonates him the following day. Whether they had sex is left ambiguous.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: When a rowdy, drunk Shield Agent groped her at a dive bar, she knocked him out by flicking a golf ball into his face, then hit another lecher with a pool cue.
  • Purple Is the New Black: Her Venom form is coloured as being purple-black in comparison to Eddie's blue-black Venom form.
  • Put on a Bus: Patricia hasn't been seen since the ending of the series, aside from a brief pseudo-cameo.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Spider-Man mistook Patricia for Eddie due to their Venom forms being nigh-identical.
  • Scary Teeth: While struggling to control the symbiote through sheer force of will, she undergoes a Partial Transformation that turns her teeth into fangs.
  • Traumatic Haircut: Patricia's head was completely shaved to give her the implants necessary to control the clone.
  • Ten Little Murder Victims: The Shiver arc has the symbiote's clone infiltrate the Christmastown military base, taking over and killing the inhabitants one by one with Patricia and the Suit trying to stop it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Pat disappeared for a good decade-and-a-half after the miniseries ended in 2004. Up until her return in Absolute Carnage, the only reference to her subsequent to the series has been in the rundown of all the pre-Mac Gargan Venoms given in Mighty Avengers #8.

    Patrick Mulligan

Patrick "Pat" Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toxin_7016.png

Alter Ego: Toxin

First Appearance: Venom Vs. Carnage #1; Venom Vs. Carnage #2 (as Toxin I)

Patrick "Pat" Mulligan was an NYPD police officer who had the misfortune of running across the supervillain Carnage, who had just spawned a baby symbiote. Too weak to kill them, Carnage bonded the infant symbiote to Patrick and left, intending to kill them once he regained his strength. When the symbiote matured, Venom named it Toxin, but when he realized that not only was it more powerful than both himself and Carnage combined but that it was unlikely to aid him in his crusade against Spider-Man, he joined with Carnage in trying to kill it. Pat accepted his bond with the symbiote and joined forces with Spider-Man and Black Cat in defeating them, and on a number of other occasions, leaving his family behind in order to tame the symbiote, eventually succeeding after stopping himself from killing Razorfist, who had killed Pat's father. Pat made a deal with the infantile symbiote: in exchange for complete control of its powers, it could take over his body for two hours a day, provided it didn't commit crimes. Pat was listed as one of the Civil War Initiative's potential recruits, but was ultimately beaten to death in a gutter by Blackheart, who stole the symbiote.

  • Angel Face, Demon Face: When Pat is calm he has No Mouth, but when angry he manifests More Teeth than the Osmond Family.
  • Arch-Enemy: Razor Fist, despite the hilarious power difference.note  He killed Pat's father, and tortured one of his friends nearly to death.
  • By-the-Book Cop: Pat's strict law-abiding nature has led to some friction with Black Cat and his symbiote.
  • Chain Pain: His "web lines" look like chains.
  • Costume Copycat: When the symbiote was calm, Pat looked a lot like Spider-Man sans the webbing motif.
  • Consulting a Convicted Killer: When Patrick decides to help bring in the villains that Electro broke out of the Raft, he visits the imprisoned Mr. Hyde to get information on Hyde's ex-partner King Cobra.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Dished these out regularly, victims including a Venom and Carnage tag team, and half of the Wrecking Crew. He was later on the receiving end of one from Blackheart, who killed him and took the symbiote.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Patrick really didn't want to become host to what was the most powerful symbiote ever at the time.
  • Disappeared Dad: Patrick abandoned his family to take care of the infant symbiote.
  • Driven to Suicide: Pat tried to kill himself by jumping in front of a subway train, but the symbiote saved him.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Pat was beaten to death in an alley by Blackheart, who took his symbiote and ate his family - all off-panel to boot.
  • Expy: Patrick is comparable to Hybrid.
  • Fast Tunnelling: Stopped a bank robbery by burrowing into the building.
  • Heroic Build: As Toxin, Patrick was given an athletically muscular figure somewhere between Spider-Man's and Venom's.
Meadows: S-so this is your infamous symbiote. N-nice six-pack, pal. Not that six-packs turn me on or anything.
  • I Have a Family: Patrick tried this on Carnage after first meeting him. It didn't work.
Pat: If you can understand me... please, please don't kill me! I-I've got a young wife—with a baby on the way.
Carnage: Correction. Ya got a young widow—with an orphan on the way!
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Pat left his wife and newborn to protect them from Venom, Carnage, and himself.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: Patrick would go with this whenever he or the symbiote came close to eating someone.
  • Killed Offscreen: Patrick disappeared for some time, and the symbiote resurfaced sans host in 2012. It was eventually revealed Blackheart had beaten him to death in a gutter to get his symbiote. And then there's what supposedly happened to his wife and baby.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Was faster and stronger than Venom and Carnage combined.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: Can spawn Combat Tentacles and shapeshift his limbs into weapons.
  • Odd Friendship: Patrick's main confidante was Black Cat, a thief.
  • One-Steve Limit: Patrick's son's name? Edward.
  • Painful Transformation: Patrick turning into Toxin rarely looked comfortable, what with all the wincing and grimacing and him exclaiming, "Aaghh!"
  • Phlegmings: Patrick's drool was black.
  • Scarily Competent Tracker: As long as he had something to go off of, like an article of clothing, he can track it.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: Patrick arranged with the symbiote that they could alternate control of his body for two hours as long as it didn't kill anyone or commit any crimes.
  • Super-Reflexes: While still in human form, Patrick blocks all of Black Cat's attempts to knock him out, without even intending to.
  • Symbiotic Possession: Toxin had a unique relationship with Patrick where they alternated control over his body.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Patrick gave one to Razor Fist, claiming that he uses blades instead of prosthetic hands because it makes him feel disassociated from his crimes, and because he wants others to tend to his every menial need like a helpless child.
  • To the Pain: In his first superhero outing, he nearly loses it on a gang of bank robbers who have surrendered.
Toxin: You are heartless killers. You killed a cop. Who no doubt had a family. Who'll be heartbroken. You deserve to die. In the most painful and heartless way imaginable. Your brains, maybe. Soft and eggy, no doubt. Evolved over thousands of years so you can waste them. I'll suck them out through your eye sockets.
  • You Killed My Father: Patrick's father was murdered by Razor Fist. When Toxin goes after him, he tells Spider-Man that if he were to cross the line and kill Razor Fist, Spidey should "put me in Ryker's along with the other bad guys".
  • Whole Costume Reference: When under control, Patrick as Toxin looks almost identical to Spider-Man, but without a webbing motif or spider emblems.

  • Combat Tentacles: Ramon usually had a half-dozen of these sprouting from his back.
  • Covered in Gunge: Ramon's tentacles could secrete a heavy slime.
  • Dashing Hispanic: Ramon was a villainous example.
  • No Mouth: Unlike the others Ramon didn't manifest a mouth when bonded to the symbiote.
  • The Smart Guy: Ramon was the most levelheaded of the quintet, and tried to act as the voice of reason.
  • Tentacle Rope: If he didn't whip his enemies with his tentacles, Ramon would ensnare them.

Alter Ego: Tyrannosaurus

Host To: Tyrannosaurus

First Appearance: Venom Vol. 4 #1

A 19-year-old soldier in the Vietnam War, Rex Strickland was critically wounded by the Việt Cộng. Selected for the Sym-Soldier Program by Nick Fury, Rex was bonded to an offshoot of the ancient Grendel symbiote dragon's living abyss and codenamed Tyrannosaurus. Not long after deployment Rex and his comrades lost control of their symbiotes, which went on a feeding frenzy. Teaming up with Nick Fury and Logan to put a stop to the Sym-Soldiers, Rex was killed by Fury to cover up S.H.I.E.L.D.'s dark secret - though his symbiote assumed his identity and impersonated him for decades afterwards.
  • Dead All Along: Venom Vol. 4 #5 reveals that the real Rex Strickland died during the Vietnam War, and was being impersonated by his former symbiote.
  • He Knows Too Much: Rex was killed by Nick Fury in order to cover up S.H.I.E.L.D.'s involvement in the disastrous Sym-Soldier program.
  • Punny Name: Rex Strickland was given the codename Tyrannosaurus... as in Tyrannosaurus rex.
  • Precursor Heroes: He is one of a team of symbiote-augmented supersoldiers who preceded Flash Thompson.
  • Sole Survivor: He is seemingly one to the the Sym-Soldier Project, the other recruits having lost control of their symbiotes, been cryogenically frozen, and killed by the Symbiote God. It turns out that Rex was killed by Nick Fury and impersonated by his symbiote, though after Knull reabsorbs the other Sym-Soldier symbiotes into Grendel he's the only one to retain his individuality.
  • Super-Soldier: He was a member of a team of symbiote-augmented supersoldiers recruited by the Sym-Soldier Project — the precursor to Project Rebirth 2.0 — decades before Flash became Agent Venom.
  • To Serve Man: Under the control of their berserk symbiotes, Rex and his comrades ate countless Việt Cộng and American soldiers.

Bonded to the Lasher symbiote, Sadie was sent after Normie Osborn but separated from the symbiote by the Maker.

    Scott Washington

Scott Washington

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/venom_vol_4_18_codex_variant_textless.jpg

Alter Ego: Hybrid

Host To: Hybrid

First Appearance: Venom: Along Came a Spider #2 (February, 1996)

Working to help himself and his brother escape the dangers of the ghetto, Scott Washington caught a break when he became a Guardsman at the Vault and was assigned to guard the Agony, Riot, Lasher, and Phage symbiotes. Developing compassion for them, in the wake of the Planet of the Symbiotes he let them escape when they merged together and broke containment. Losing his job, he returned to the ghetto and was crippled by thugs from the Easy X gang, who murdered his brother. Scott became consumed by vengeful anger, and when the gestalt symbiote sought out and bonded to him he tried to use it to seek revenge as Hybrid. The symbiote tempered his desire for vengeance, and Scott became an antihero working to clean up the crime-infested neighborhood. Years later, Scott was lured into a trap by Eddie Brock, who murdered him despite admitting he'd been doing good as Hybrid.

  • Anti-Hero: As much as Scott wanted to be a Sociopathic Hero, the symbiotes wouldn't let him, so he settled for being The Cowl.
  • Back for the Dead: After a 16-year hiatus was brought back to be killed by Eddie Brock.
  • Badass Cape: He has one made of Combat Tentacles.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason the Hybrid symbiote bonded to him.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He viewed it as his duty to keep his little brother Derek on the straight and narrow.
  • Cool Mask: His looks a lot like Wolverine's.
  • Expy: As Hybrid he is one of Spawn.
  • Guilt by Association Gag: An overzealous ally of the Jury wanted to hold him accountable for everything that occurred during Planet of the Symbiotes.
  • Handicapped Badass: Was confined to a wheelchair after being beaten by a thug.
  • Hero of Another Story: Scott's tale was told through backup stories featured in The Hunted and Along Came a Spider.
  • If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: The symbiotes use this argument to keep Scott from committing murder.
  • I Work Alone: Scott was offered the chance to join the New Warriors, but turned it down in favor of being a solo act. He also turned down joining Mercury Team for this reason, but the military appropriated the symbiotes after his death.
  • Let Off by the Detective: He helped the newly formed Hybrid symbiote escape and didn't tell his colleagues, which cost him his job.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After experiencing the pain and suffering the Life Foundation symbiotes endured, much of which was at the hands of the experimentation he oversaw, Scott tries to defend them and loses his job.
  • Only in It for the Money: The reason he agreed to oversee the experiments on Life Foundation symbiotes was because the bonus it offered would help him get his family out of the ghetto.
  • Powered Armor: He wore a suit of green armor derived from Iron Man's as a Guardsman at the Vault.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When his brother was murdered and he was crippled, Scott went from being a Nice Guy to an angry black man bent on vengeance. The Hybrid symbiote was quite put off by this, and tried to act as his voice of reason, a stark contrast to the other symbiotes.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: The symbiote enforced this policy on Scott, as when he tried to kill a gang member it left him until he was endangered.
Symbiotes: cannot allow murder Scott. we are permanently bonded with you Scott. but we are not Venom. we are not Carnage. we will not kill.
  • Tracking Chip: By inserting a part of the symbiote's biomass into someone, Scott could track their location.
  • Twofer Token Minority: A black paraplegic.
  • You Are Number 6: As a Guardsman his designation actually was Number 6.

    Tanis Nieves

Tanis Nieves

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scorn_9041.jpg

Alter Ego: Doctor Tanis Nieves

Host To: Carnage, Scorn

First Appearance: Carnage #1; Carnage #2 (as Carnage); Carnage #5 (as Scorn)

Tanis Nieves was a psychologist working to rehabilitate Frances "Shriek" Barrison, "wife" of the presumed-dead serial killer Cletus Kasady. When the Doppelganger attempted to free its mother from captivity, Tanis lost her right arm due to a stray blast, and was given a prosthetic courtesy of Hall Industries. However, it turned out that the prosthetic had been engineered from the Carnage symbiote, which Hall Industries had been experimenting on. The symbiote remotely seized control of Tanis' arm, forcing her to break it free and bonding to her in an effort to relocate its original host, who was still alive even after being torn in half and spending a year in orbit. After the Carnage symbiote had returned to Cletus, Tanis discovered it had left a spawn that had merged with her prosthetic. Initially terrified, she ultimately embraced it, dubbing it "Scorn", and used it to help Spider-Man and Iron Man repel Carnage. Under the direction of the military, Scorn joined the Mercury Team and trained her symbiote's unique ability to assimilate any technological object. When Carnage resurfaced in Doverton, Scorn was dispatched alongside the other members of Team Mercury, and with the help of Agent Venom succeeded in capturing her "father".

Years later, Tanis became a member of the Church of the New Darkness — a cult worshiping the symbiotes and the dark god Knull — and facilitated Cletus Kasady's resurrection as Dark Carnage, for which he repaid her by ripping out her spine and eating it to absorb her symbiote codex.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Tanis lost her right arm during a shootout between the Iron Rangers and the Doppelgänger. She later cut off the replacement upon realizing it was "infected" by Carnage's spawn, though she allowed it to return to her.
  • Arm Cannon: Can fuse her arms to guns to give herself these.
  • Back for the Dead: Scorn reappears for the first time since Carnage USA as the head of the apocalypse cult worshipping Carnage. Carnage's first action upon his resurrection is to rip out her spine and devour it.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Engaged in one with the Carnage symbiote.
  • Brainy Brunette: When not in symbiote form. Otherwise, there's no way to tell.
  • Children Are Innocent: Implied with the symbiote, as it left Shriek because she frightened it, and it actually asked Tanis's permission to return to her.
  • Chrome Champion: The symbiote has a silver-colored right arm and constantly shifting metallic silver markings.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Easily thrashed Shriek and Doppelganger in her debut appearance.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The events of the Carnage miniseries were this for her.
  • The Engineer: While the Mercury Team scours Doverton, Scorn stays behind to work on a machine that will separate the Carnage symbiote from Cletus and the residents of the town.
  • Evil Hand: The Carnage symbiote escaped captivity by taking control of Tanis's prosthetic arm.
  • Face–Heel Turn: In Web of Venom: Carnage Born, Scorn makes her return for the first time since 2011's Carnage USA having become the leader of a cult worshipping the dark god Knull. She uses the stolen sample of the Grendel symbiote to resurrect Cletus Kasady... and promptly gets her spine ripped out and eaten.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Due to the symbiote being able to interface with technology.
  • Genetic Memory: The Scorn symbiote instinctively dislikes Spider-Man, despite having had no extended interaction with him.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: The symbiote was initially red-orange, but became purple and silver after bonding with Tanis.
  • Military Superhero: Was drafted into being one, and is currently categorized as still in-training.
  • Most Common Superpower: As Scorn, Tanis' bust is emphasized more than in her human form.
  • No Mouth: The Scorn symbiote has yet to manifest its species' trademark More Teeth than the Osmond Family while bonded to Tanis.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Looks quite different from the other symbiotes, due to the smaller eyes, and not yet displaying fangs or Lovecraftian Superpowers.
  • Organic Technology: Her right arm was a prosthetic formed from the Carnage symbiote.
  • Psycho Psychologist: As She-Carnage.
  • Purple Is Powerful: The Scorn symbiote is purple, and even stronger than its "father" Carnage.
  • Sarcasm Mode:
General Duggan: Doctor Tanis Nieves, I'm General Brandon Duggan. You were the victim of a prolonged psychic assault by the Carnage symbiote, resulting in a permanent bond with its alien progeny.
Scorn: Oh yeah, thanks. It totally slipped my mind.
  • Shoot the Dog: She explicitly compared putting Shriek in a coma to this.
  • Sixth Ranger: For the Mercury Team, being the only one of the group to not have a military background or Life Foundation symbiote.
  • The Smart Guy: For the Mercury Team.
  • Spock Speak: While building the anti-symbiote sonic weapon, the symbiote speaks using a sophisticated manner that comes across as a Machine Monotone bordering on Robo Speak.
  • Technopath: Because it spawned from Tanis' symbiote prosthetic, the Scorn symbiote doesn't distinguish between itself and technology, allowing it to merge with anything composed of metal.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: When Tanis rejected the symbiote, it joined with Shriek, but it soon left her and returned to Tanis because Shriek terrified it.
  • Tron Lines: The symbiote has silvery vein-like markings on it.
  • Warrior Therapist: Before her encounter with Carnage, she was The Shrink. Whether the army is continuing to let her practice is left unstated. Probably not.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Originally was one to the point where she almost got herself killed saving the Doppelgänger.
  • Winged Humanoid: Due to being augmented by her prosthetic the Carnage symbiote could form wings.

When Donna Diego (Scream) succumbed to her schizophrenia and had a psychotic breakdown, Carl was murdered alongside the other Life Foundation symbiotes' hosts.

  • Ax-Crazy: Trevor was almost as bad as Carnage.
