Flash’s Family

Flash Sentry’s adopted and biological family.

    Scootaloo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scootaloo_castle_creator.png
One of the Cutie Mark Crusaders and later revealed to be Flash Sentry's sister.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the canon show, she never fought any serious threats head-on, given that she was only a filly. In the season 7 premiere, she shows that she is capable of providing valuable aid in a fight, as shown when she helps Flash destroy Mecha-Heather.
  • Ascended Extra: In canon Scootaloo was just one of the Cutie Mark Crusaders, a group of supporting characters, and she was the one that took the longest to have a focus episode or have her backstory explored. Here, she is revealed to be Flash’s long-lost little sister and thus has much more focus than she originally did in canon, moreso than the other Crusaders.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The season 7 premiere gives her a focus role. She is revealed to harbor some jealousy towards her big brother Flash Sentry, thinking his accomplishments and celebrity status overshadow anything she could do and make it impossible for her to live up to him. She later plays a major role during the battle with Mecha-Heather, discovering its weakness and stabbing it in the chest to save her family. She later reconciles with Flash after the battle.
  • Easily Forgiven: When she reunited with her birth parents, Trail Blazer and Misty Veil, she holds no grudge against them for leaving her and Flash at separate orphanages and for being out of their lives for several years, unlike Flash who tears into them for what they did to him and everyone else they meet who always bring up how they essentially abandoned their kids. She is just happy to have them in her life and quickly bonds with both of them.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: While her family is struggling against Mecha-Heather, she realizes that Mecha-Heather's claws are the only thing that can damage it.
Scootaloo: They can't stop it. The only thing strong enough to penetrate it is... (sees the decapitated claw and remembers how Flash cut it off) Itself.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • Played for Laughs; when she first sees Flurry Heart she is upset at how much larger Flurry's wings are compared to hers and asks if it is bad she is getting jealous of somepony "that isn't even potty trained".
    • During the season 7 premiere, she's revealed to harbor some jealousy towards Flash Sentry, thinking that his celebrity status constantly overshadows her. The two reconcile after they take down Mecha-Heather and Flash reaffirms his appreciation for her.
  • Hide Your Children: Like the other Crusaders, she wants to witness the Royal Knights and Mane Seven in battle, but she's usually taken away somewhere else for her own safety to be supervised by another adult.
  • Related in the Adaptation: She and Flash are revealed to be siblings, while in canon no connection between them is ever established.

    Misty Veil and Trail Blazer

Flash Sentry's biological parents.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: They explore lost and hidden ruins, searching for the origins of life in the world.
  • Badass Normal: Trail Blazer is just a normal pegasus, unlike his son, and he can’t use magic like Misty Veil. But that won’t stop him from taking on timber wolves to protect his wife and daughter.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Everyone who meets them are not particularly happy to see them. When they first met them, the Mane Six all called them out on their abandonment of Flash and Scootaloo.
  • Interspecies Romance: Misty Veil is a unicorn, while Trail Blazer is a pegasus.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: They had lost their memories on the circumstances of Flash and Scootaloo’s births. The Knight of Friendship reveals that whatever was causing it was removed when Tirek stole their magic.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: They reveal themselves to Flash and Scootaloo in season 4 when Misty Veil stops having visions. While Scootaloo was excited to see them, Flash... Was not.
  • Original Character: At least for Scootaloo, they replace Snap Shutter and Mane Allgood as her parents. According to Word of God, Snap and Mane still exist in this universe, but were close friends with Trail and Misty, so they were asked to adopt Scootaloo. They didn't adopt Flash Sentry because it was still believed that he died in the orphanage fire.
  • Seers: Misty Veil was born with the ability to see into the future. She was only able to see up to a certain point however, and she was somehow unable to see King Sombra in her visions.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: Misty Veil’s final vision involves an armored stallion with wings and a horn.

    Princess Celestia and Princess Luna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c7109338_5a38_4421_ab41_c84d556de5af.jpeg
The two alicorn sisters who lead Equestria together.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Princess Luna was close friends with Sharp Paw and the other Jakhowls, so she was devastated when they were all wiped out by Dark Mist.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Downplayed. While Starswirl still found Celestia and Luna when they were younger, they were found in the Lost City of Faust, which seems to be the origin of all natural-born alicorns.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Luna is not happy when she finds out that Trixie was studying and practicing dream magic. She explains that the dream realm is too dangerous for anyone but her to explore and that Trixie could accidentally trap herself there forever. She calms down when Trixie explains she was learning it to try to help her with her duties and help ease the load off her, as thanks for all she has done for her.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Luna won't tolerated any pony who insults or hurts Trixie. Such as when Regal Burst came to visit Trixie.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Luna takes on this role when she first meets Sharp Paw to help him train for three months to defeat Strong Strike. She put him through Training from Hell, but it ultimately paid off.
  • Foreshadowing: Two moments with Luna in "Princess Twilight Sparkle" and "The Tree of Harmony" foreshadow the fate of Jakhowls and Springer's origins.
    • In the former, when Twilight sees the flashback of when Luna first became Nightmare Moon, Luna angrily screams at Celestia how "they're all gone" and "she doesn't know who they are" when accusing Celestia she doesn't care about them. This alludes to the near genocide the Jakhowls suffered that wiped out all but one egg, and how Luna had her memories locked away of them to try to cope with the loss.
    • In the latter, after the Tree of Harmony produces the mysterious box and everyone else leaves, Luna stays behind for a moment and notices a small groove in the Tree of Harmony that wasn't originally there when she and Celestia first took the Elements of Harmony from it. This alludes to Springer's birth, since his egg was put inside the Tree of Harmony long ago to hatch when it was safe, and he only recently hatched following Nightmare Moon's defeat.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Princess Luna is implied to be this. She likes to take Ruby Scarlet (and later Trixie) to "go out for drinks" and, given Trixie's fearful reactions to these occasions, the results are not pretty. It doesn't help that many new drinks were invented in the thousand years that she was gone, making her more eager to drink.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: In the final chapter of The Forgotten Darkness, Luna reveals she can't actually remember anything about the Jakhowls, and she is only barely able to remember Sharp Paw because he was her partner. Celestia quickly realizes that there is a magical lock on Luna's brain preventing her from remembering, and once it is undone all the memories come back to her at once. She also remembers she agreed to have it put on her in the first place by a mysterious golden figure to help her cope with her grief of losing them all.
  • Like a Daughter to Me: Similar to Celestia's relationship with Twilight Sparkle, Luna has a very affectionate relationship with both Ruby Scarlet and Trixie, in which she is worried about how they'll be when they leave to the Lost City of Faust and she even states that she's come to view Trixie like a daughter.
  • The Mentor:
    • Celestia serves as a secondary mentor to Flash.
    • Luna is Ruby and Trixie's mentor.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Princess Celestia, as usual. When Shining Armor catches Flash Sentry when he was a thief, Celestia is sympathetic to Flash since he's a homeless orphan who had to do whatever he could to survive and offers to find him a new home, which Twilight's family accepts.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: When Celestia surrounds Bomber in a magical shield to contain his own self-explosion, she gives an expression of pity and sorrow over sentencing him to death, but realizes that it's the only way to save even more lives from his detonation.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Princess Luna constantly supports Trixie while teaching her and helps her overcome her Inferiority Superiority Complex. This is best shown in "Kamen Pony", where she tells Trixie she is never going to give up on her and that the two of them can unearth her greatness.

    Princess Cadance and Shining Armor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eb6bf7b5_0b90_4224_a6ac_c66d9bfbe1a4.jpeg
The Princess of Love and Captain of the Royal Guard respectively, in which the former is an honorary family member (later sister-in-law) and the latter is a sibling to Flash and Twilight.
  • Accidental Truth: When Hiveena is being transported to the new prison north of the Crystal Empire and she warns she will find a way out, Shining Armor mockingly says that when she does she can come have dinner with him and Cadance in the Crystal Empire. Once Hiveena is released from prison under terms for a truce thanks to Thorax, she actually does end up having dinner with Shining Armor and Cadance, with Hiveena even lampshading that Shining Armor "kept his promise".
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In canon, they did not appear until the season 2 finale. Here, they appear in the very beginning of the series, The Element of Courage.
  • Broken Pedestal: They (especially Cadance) suffered this after the Crystal Ponies learns they kept Sombra's survival from them and felt betrayed by them in "The Quest of Redemption" when Sombra returned to the Crystal Empire.
  • Everyone Can See It: Everyone, but Twilight, knew that they were dating because of how they made goo-goo eyes at each other.
  • Genki Girl: Cadance becomes ecstatic when she meets Springer, the first Jakhowl she's ever seen.
  • Henpecked Husband: Played for Laughs at the end of The Knight Of Friendship. After Shining Armor learns that Flash and Twilight are now dating, he claims he had no idea they felt that way about each other mirroring the same attitude they both had for most of the series up to that point, while everyone else figured it out a long time ago. Cadance responds to his obliviousness by pulling him by the ear with her magic and telling him they need to have a talk about “how ignorant he is”.
  • It's All About Me: Played for Laughs with Cadance. During The Knight of Friendship there are times when it seems like she wants to help Twilight and Flash get together more for herself than for them. Such as wanting to finally "fix her greatest failure" by finally getting them together. Later when Flash and Twilight return to the Crystal Empire, now a couple, she ends up crying and clarifies that they are Tears of Remorse rather than Tears of Joy, because she is upset that after all the hard work she put in to get them together, she wasn't actually there to see it happen for herself. She eventually relents, but says that as payback she wants photos of their first date together, she gets to officiate their wedding, and they need to name their first born daughter "Cadance".
  • My Greatest Failure: Cadance spent years trying to get Twilight Sparkle and Flash Sentry to realize their feelings for one another, but she eventually gave up on them. Later on in The Knight Of Friendship, she considers not being there when Twilight and Flash finally realized their feelings for each other to be her new greatest failure.
  • Oblivious to Love: Downplayed with Shining Armor. He had no issue discovering with his feeling for Cadance or understanding that she felt the same way about him, but he was completely clueless about how his sister Twilight and adopted brother Flash felt about each other. He is the last one to discover they have feelings for each other and that they finally started dating in The Knight Of Friendship and is completely shocked by it.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Cadance was willing to trust Thorax when he arrived at the Crystal Empire, as well as releasing Hiveena from prison. Shining Armor, not so much.
  • Secret Relationship: Defied. They were barely even trying to keep their relationship a secret, but everyone, sans Twilight, could tell because of how they made goo-goo eyes at each other.
  • Shared Family Quirks: When Shining Armor finds out at the last second that Flash and Twilight are now in a relationship and admits he had no clue they felt that way about each other, Cadance angrily uses her magic to pull him by the ear and drag him away while calling him a "Meathead", the same way Twilight constantly did to Flash throughout the series. Everyone else is left to think that it runs in Twilight’s family.
  • Ship Tease: In the beginning of the series, both aren't married yet, but they do share these moments, spending a lot of time together and occasionally blushing at each other. They become an Official Couple when Shining proposes to Cadance at the end of season one, which she happily accepts.
  • Shipper on Deck: Cadnace spent years trying to get Twilight and Flash to hook up, but their Oblivious to Love made it outright impossible. With some help from Twilight’s friends, she was finally able to get Twilight to realize that she romantically loved Flash.
  • Tears of Joy: Defied. After learning that Twilight and Flash are finally romantically involved, Cadance starts sobbing, but claims she isn't crying because she is happy. She feels cheated that after all the work she went through to get them to see how they feel about each other that she wasn't there when they finally confessed.

    Princess Flurry Heart
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fc75b1ab_8b87_4f00_9b7b_2b02d0f78d80.png
Shining Armor and Princess Cadance’s alicorn daughter.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Played with since she is still a Brainy Baby like in canon, but she shows a few signs of being slightly smarter than her canon counterpart. When she sees Pound and Pumpkin fighting over a toy at Sugarcube Corner, instead of trying to solve the problem by breaking the toy in two so they can share it, she puts them both in a soundproof bubble to stop their crying until Springer finds another toy for them, though this is also supported by Flash and Springer helping better than Twilight and Spike did in the same scenario. Also, while in canon she communicated entirely through gurgling and giggling until she was Suddenly Speaking in the Season 9 premiere, here she is shown attempting to speak much sooner, when she tries to say Flash and Springer's names several times, calling them "Fla" and "Spree".
  • Baby See, Baby Do: When Flash and Springer grin deviously at each other when deciding what punishment to give the kids for abandoning them to take care of Flurry alone, Flurry Heart giggles at their faces before copying it herself.
  • Badass Adorable: She physically struggles against several ponies that try to drag her back to Twilight's castle, so she can go help Flash and Springer fight Trial-T. When she finally arrives and sees Flash knocked out she blasts Trial-T in anger dealing it massive damage, only calming down when she sees Flash is okay.
  • Brainy Baby: Her family boasts how she is surprisingly smart for a foal her age. Shining Armor shows them an example of this by saying colors to Flurry Heart and she points to someone that is that color, like pointing to Thorax when she hears "Black" and to Shining Armor and Fancy Pant's manes when she hears "Blue". She shows more of her intelligence in "A Flurry of Emotions", when she helps to stop the Cake twins from fighting over a toy and comes close to saying Flash and Springer's names several times.
  • Damsel in Distress: She is almost kidnapped in "The Bug and the Knight" by an unnamed thug, but Thorax and Hiveena manage to save her. Hard Sell later attempts to assassinate her in her sleep, only to be captured by Ruby and Hiveena.
  • Lifesaving Misfortune: Flurry Heart is absent during The Movie because she caught a sudden cold and needed to stay in the Crystal Empire. This turns out to be a blessing in disguise since it means she avoided being turned to stone like the other alicorns in Canterlot, and Tempest didn't bother trying to track her down.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Cadance says her favorite toy, a stuffed snail she named Whammy, calms her down whenever she gets fussy, as demonstrated a few times in "A Flurry of Emotions". But, when Trial-T is attacking Flash and Springer in Ponyville, Flurry Heart is so determined to help them fight it that she outright ignores Whammy when Fire Heart offers it to her to get her to calm down and follow them back to the castle.
  • Pint-Size Powerhouse: She might just be a baby, but she still has powerful alicorn magic. When everyone else was struggling against Trial-T, Flurry practically one-shots it with a blast of magic when she sees how it hurt Flash.
  • Super-Strength: Although it isn't commented on in canon, it is explained here that since she is an alicorn she also has earth pony strength along with flight and magic. This lets her lift and drag fully grown ponies.

    Twilight Velvet and Night Light
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a4aecd2c_9976_456d_9760_f43707df0d40.png
Flash Sentry's adoptive parents.
  • Death Glare: Twilight Velvet gives one to Misty Veil and Trail Blazer when she first meets them in The Knight of Friendship.
  • Interspecies Adoption: They are two unicorns who accept Flash Sentry, a pegasus, into their family and love him as if he were their own son.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Unlike the canon, they are more remorse in "Once Upon A Zeppelin" after Twilight was unable to have her own fun and leaving her to do more works.
  • Parental Substitute: They acted as Flash's parents for him growing up after he joins their family.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Twilight Velvet is not happy to meet Misty Veil and Trail Blazer in The Knight of Friendship. She calls them out for abandoning their children, and does not accept their reasonings for doing so.

    Fire Heart and Shining Soul

Two young ponies whom Flash and his friends encounter in the Lost City of Faust.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Fire Heart and Shining Soul wear a hoodie and turtle-neck jumper respectively.
  • Affection-Hating Kid: Fire Heart shows he is one in "The Break Up Breakdown". When Twilight is teaching her class about the magic of love, he sticks his tongue out and makes gagging noises to Ace, and expresses annoyance at being given an assignment where he needs to write an essay about love after observing some couples around town, not being excited about watching ponies "be all gross and smoochie". When he is talking about Hearts and Hooves Day and the assignment to Cozy, he expresses his hate for the holiday, gagging at how Cozy talks about how romantic it is, and states that he is "a a tough colt, doing tough things" who doesn't need love. He slowly grows out of this as the chapter goes on, realizing that every couple has their own idea for romance and doesn't necessarily need to do common romantic gestures and activities, as well as recognizing other forms of love, like love for family, friends, and yourself.
  • Announcer Chatter: Shining Soul gains this role for the War for the Lost City arc after "Soul's Destiny" when she's taken out of the game.
  • The Apprentice: After the war is over, Fire Heart accepts Flash's offer to come back to Equestria with him and become his squire, so he can receive the same training Flash did, learning to use his new powers to protect others and become a Royal Knight someday. Shining Soul also becomes Twilight's apprentice to learn to control her alicorn magic better, sharing the position with Starlight Glimmer.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Heart delivers one to Starlight by asking her if she knows Grand and Script continues to fall out once the spell wears off.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: In The Movie, Heart wanted to get out from undersea as fast as he could since his powers doesn't work underwater. He got his wish, but not in a way he expected, being kicked out of Seaquestria by Queen Novo along with everyone else after Twilight attempted theft.
  • Beneath the Mask: Underneath his exterior as a slacker, Heart is revealed to be deeply aware and insecure of how many ponies see him as the "dumb musclehead" to the intelligent Soul.
  • Big Eater: Once Heart tastes pizza for the first time, he stuffs himself with several slices while thinking about how good the modern day foods are and wanting to try all of them.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Fire Heart is ultimately the one to defeat Void during The Movie, using the Link Gems and Master Gem that Solid Script created to combine their powers with his own and defeat Void's superpowered state. But he ends up using so much power that he accidentally destroys the Master Gem, and leaves his right leg horribly injured with all the fur from his hoof to his knee burnt away. First and Heather later tell him while bandaging him up that he needs to hold off on using his fire magic for awhile, or else his wounds might never fully heal. His wound is fully healed by the end of School's in Session, but he now has a scar on his right hoof that matches the one his adult Future Badass self had.
  • Butt-Monkey: Ever since he got his fire powers and won his first match, Fire Heart has lost practically every battle he's participated in afterwards during War of the Lost City, usually being one of the first to be eliminated. The one fight he did end up winning on his own afterwards still left him momentarily de-powered afterwards due to falling in water in the process.
  • Care-Bear Stare: When Shining Soul unleashes her magic during her second battle in the city, her magic spreads throughout the city and damages the cultists but heals Trixie and Ruby.
  • Child Hater: Downplayed and Played for Laughs with both of them. Due to the two of them helping to take care of Flurry Heart while her magic was out of control, and getting just as battered as everyone else during it, they both began to grow a dislike for babies. Soul even wonders how her old home wasn't destroyed everyday if the average alicorn baby was as destructive as Flurry, and is worried that she may end up giving birth to one herself in a few decades.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Soul claims she became an alicorn "about two weeks ago", and Flash's team realizes that must have been the same day that Flash (and Shadow) had the vision telling him to come to the city and who to bring with him. Though Soarin is quick to dismiss it, since they don't know for sure it was the same day, others like Cold are sure there is no way it is just a pure coincidence and that there is some kind of connection. "Genesis" reveals that it was indeed not a coincidence, as Faust had turned Shining Soul into an alicorn to use as a vessel to try to communicate with Flash and Shadow.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Shining Soul accidentally knocks out Salix, Wingill, and Armalum after its revealed that she’s an alicorn. Because of this, the sphere that the two teams were supposed to search for automatically flies to her and Ruby.
  • Foreshadowing: Some of the Defenders stated they wish they had someone on the Royal Knights who could use fire magic, so they wouldn't need to always rely on Spike. After Fire Heart gains his fire powers, Flash invites him to become his apprentice and eventually become a Royal Knight.
  • Future Badass: An adult Fire Heart, now a Royal Knight with the title "Ig-Knighter", travels back in time to stop Tragus, a rogue changeling, from changing history.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Heart's Future Badass had a long scar on his right hoof. When Flash asks him how he got it, he avoids answering it to avoid potentially changing the timeline. The kid version of Heart eventually gains the same scar himself by the end of School's in Session, revealing that it was from the injury he received from when he defeated Void with the Link Gems and Master Gem, with only Flash, Twilight, and Spike realizing it is the same scar as his future self.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Fire Heart taunts Salix in battle, making fun of his intelligence (or lack thereof), and taunting his temper and the reason he was kicked out of his old home. This is to get Salix mad enough to shoot fire at him, so he can dodge out of the way and get it to melt the prison Flash was trapped in.
  • Idiot Ball: Heart's actions in Dragon's Awakening cause him to hold this a lot. He disobeys direct orders from Flash a lot and rushes into battle without a plan.
  • Immune to Fire: After Fire Heart gained his fire powers, he is no longer affected by fire himself. He doesn't even flinch when Spike angrily breathes fire in his face.
  • I'm Okay!: Fire Heart says this after he jumps in front of and absorbs one of Ember's fireballs she accidentally sneezes to protect an ice sculpture.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Heart offers Soul to be his partner during "A Matter of Principals", Soul makes a joke if he's only asking her because she's smarter than him which hurt his feeling as he doesn't like to be treated as the dumb one and was tired of her making jokes about him. She was ashamed when he told her and she apologized.
  • Instant Expert:
    • Once Fire Heart gets his fire magic, he shows to have enough control over it to help Flash and the rest of his team fight the cultists. This is downplayed later when he needs to learn proper control to stop from causing damage to anything around him.
    • When hanging out with Button Mash and Rumble, Heart also shows to be very good at playing video games. Enough to beat both of them in a racing game despite having never heard of video games until that day. He claims it is simply a matter of having good hoof-eye coordination.
  • Kid Has a Point: Heart calls out Script for not accepting apologies from Grand by calling him a brat. Script doesn't deny it.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Neither can remember how they arrived in the Lost City of Faust, and just know they woke up there one day. It is eventually revealed that the city suffered a pandemic that only children were immune to and they were put to sleep with a spell to one day live without fear of the plague. This implies that they were both two of the children from that time, and that their memory loss is a side effect of the spell that was used on them.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Heart loves this trope, since he always ran into battles without listening to Flash and Twilight. This causes him to get into trouble a lot, especially in Dragon's Awakening.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: During The Last Problem when Fire Heart returns from his mission to capture Tragus, it is revealed that he actually lied to Flash's past self about him being dead in the future, having been told to do so by Flash's future self. Fire Heart asks him why he had him pretend he died, noting how torn up his past self was about it and not knowing about the struggle Flash went through over getting that warning, and Flash just says he'll explain later.
  • Love Hurts: Fire Heart gets hit with this pretty bad, maybe even worse than Spike did. After developing a crush on his fellow student Cozy Glow and slowly bonding with her and hanging out with her throughout Season 8, he is devastated when she betrays him and all his friends in the season finale. He is left in such a heartbroken state that he declares he is never letting himself get that close to anyone ever again.
  • Missing Child: They explain that they never found the city, only that they woke up one day, and found themselves in it. And they’ve been in it for three years.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Heart attacks Garble with his Fire Force attack to save Twilight and Rarity from him. Except that since Garble is a dragon he is Immune to Fire, and all he did was get Garble's attention.
  • No-Sell: Thanks to his fire powers, Fire Heart is now completely Immune to Fire. When Spike angrily breathes fire in his face he is completely unfazed by it.
  • One-Steve Limit: Zig-zagged and lampshaded with Fire Heart. He quickly notices that the "Heart" part of his name is starting to become more common than he thought, since first Shining Armor and Cadance's alicorn baby is named "Flurry Heart" and then he meets Button Mash's mom and learns her name is "Cream Heart".
  • Playing with Fire: Fire Heart is given the ability to use fire magic in "Courageous Burning Heart" thanks to his sister.
  • Power Incontinence:
    • Shining Soul can't control her alicorn magic. She is afraid of using it since she accidentally hurt her brother Fire Heart with it once, but it is powerful enough to one-shot three cultists at once.
    • Fire Heart needs to work to control his fire powers after he becomes Flash's apprentice. This includes learning to control his anger so he doesn't accidentally activate his powers and destroy something around him.
  • Puppy Love: He seems to develop a crush on Cozy Glow shortly after bumping into her. When the school is shut down, he is noticeably very sad when Cozy leaves town, and happily reunites with her when it is reopened.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Heart wasn't in a good mood during "Forest Therapy", but when Raisins and Jaden kept asking him if there's something wrong with him, he just snapped at them, ranting about not wanting to lower his guard down again due the actions of Cozy Glow, Razor Fang, and Shroudheart.
  • Really 700 Years Old: After Flash translates a journal that Trixie finds in the middle of the city, it is discovered that the city suffered from a mysterious plague that only the children were immune to for unknown reasons. The children were sealed away and put to sleep in the hopes they could live after the plague dies. This implies that Heart and Soul were two of the children from that time and recently awoke, and they can't remember their past due to a side effect of the spell.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Heart has this dynamic with Ace with him being the Blue Oni to Ace's Red Oni.
  • The Reveal: The chapter "Ruby’s Rage" reveals that Shining Soul is an alicorn.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Shining Soul being an alicorn catches Team Shadow off guard, and she accidentally ends up allowing Team Flash to win.
    • Fire Heart become this when Shining Soul gives him a power boost in "Courageous Burning Heart", allowing him to use fire magic.
  • Smug Super: Fire Heart begins to believe he is invincible with his new fire magic. Though he quickly gets a slice of Humble Pie when Tempera outsmarts him in a fight and sends him into a river, and his powers become useless once he is wet.
  • Tag Along Kid: Flash's team discovers them immediately after they arrive in the city and befriend them. They end up sticking with them once the Cult of Shadow attacks the city and are transported to Team Flash's castle. The game itself also considers them members of Flash's team, and thus they can be selected for battles just like the others can.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Zig-zagged with Shining Soul. She started as just a pegasus like her brother, but about two weeks before the start of War of the Lost City she suddenly became an alicorn. She doesn't understand how it happened or why though, and she has trouble controlling her new magic. Trixie and Ruby try to help her control it better after finding out she is an alicorn.
    • In the chapter "Courageous Burning Heart", Shining Soul is able to give Fire Heart a power boost, allowing him to use fire magic and together with Flash and Cold, they defeat Storm Blade and Salix. It also give him his cutie mark.
    • Shining Soul initially started out with some generic alicorn powers, but she eventually develops some of the most advanced healing powers in the series, using them to cure Ponyville of the virus that wiped out the alicorns. This earns her the title "Princess of Life."
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Heart is a lot moodier in Jakhowls Rising, due to still being heartbroken over Cozy Glow's betrayal. He increasingly got worse to the point of snapping at his friends in "Forest Therapy". Fortunately, he got better at the end.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: The plague that ravaged the Lost City of Faust is revealed to still be alive in Shining Soul’s body. When everyone else is nearing their ends, Shining Soul pleads and begs for a miracle to happen. This causes her ‘true magic’ to awaken, which is healing magic on a level that not even First Aid had ever seen before, as she not only cured everyone of the plague, she also healed some ponies who had injuries from before they got the plague.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Downplayed with Shining Soul. It is eventually revealed in "Genesis" that Faust made her an alicorn so that she could use her to communicate with Flash and Shadow's teams when they first arrived in the city, intending to explain the rules to them and the reason they were all there from the start. However, because Soul was scared of her new alicorn powers due to accidentally hurting her brother, she didn't accept them by the time both teams arrived in the city, preventing Faust from properly communicating with everyone. Soul finally accepted her powers when she beat Shadow, but by then it was too late for Faust to explain anything to everyone.
  • Youthful Freckles: Fire Heart has six freckles total and he's about the same age as Scootaloo.

    Ace and Miracle "Mira"

The jakhowls hatched from the eggs Springer was given by Faust while at the Lost City of Faust.
  • Beneath the Mask: Despite his slacker attitude, Ace is insecure about himself and believes he won't be able to live to up Springer's legacy, as he considered Mira to be better than him.
  • Can't Catch Up: This is Mira's fear in "What Lies Beneath", as she's worried she's weaker than Ace and Springer and even admitted Ace produces stronger Aura Blasts than her.
  • Constantly Curious: Being two newborns, they are always interested by the world around them and want to see and learn about it. Springer points out this isn't always a good thing, since they are much more carefree than he was at their age and don't understand how dangerous some things can be.
  • Genocide Survivor: Like Springer, they survived the apparent extinction of the Jakhowls, with Faust protecting their eggs in the Lost City of Faust before eventually passing them on to Springer. When Shade learns of their existence, he is not happy to learn their are even more Jakhowls now.
  • In-Series Nickname: Miracle is called "Mira" for short as a nickname, since she liked how both names sounded.
  • Innocent Means Naïve: When they're first born, they run off to the Everfree Forest, unaware of the many dangers there and wanting to escape the obstructive parenting of Springer. Luckily for them, Springer saves them from a cragadile attack and they learn their lesson on how dangerous the world really is without supervision or proper training.
  • It's All My Fault: Ace blames himself for the state Springer ends up in after Shade tortures him.
  • Ironic Name: "Ace" is ironically the more incompetent Aura user compared to his sister Mira, though he is training to be better.
  • Kid Hero: They've only just hatched and are being trained by Springer to wield their Aura and carry on the legacy of the Jakhowls.
  • Meaningful Name: They decided on their names due to what Heart and Soul told them before they hatched from their eggs. Heart described the world as being "ace" and Soul said the two of them were a "miracle".
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Ace has this dynamic with Heart with him being the Red Oni to Heart's Blue Oni.
  • The Slacker: Ace prefers to sleep in, eat snacks, and read comics rather than train with Springer and learn how to use aura, insisting that he doesn't need it. After a near fatal encounter with Shade though, he realizes he was wrong and starts taking things more seriously, wanting to get stronger.
  • Suddenly Speaking: At the end of "To Where and Back Again Part 2", when they return after their camping trip with Springer they are both suddenly able to talk, with everyone understanding them now.

    Flash Magnus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flash_magnus_by_cloudyglow_dblqp2n.png
The Pillar of Bravery and an ancestor to Flash Sentry.
  • Adaptational Job Change: In canon, Flash Magnus took a job as a drill sergeant training Celestia's Royal Guards. Here, after he joins Flash on a mission to save a small village from Banshee and Electra, he decides to stay in the village and act as its defender.
  • Ambiguously Related: When Flash Sentry shares with him how his father's side of the family claims they can trace their family roots all the way back to Flash Magnus, Magnus initially believes this to be impossible since he claims he never had kids. However, Magnus does remember he had a special somepony named Sparkling Effervescence, and confirms he slept with her the day before he and the others faced the Pony of Shadows and were trapped in Limbo. He and Flash Sentry both theorize that Sparkling could have gotten pregnant from this and had a kid, who then continued the bloodline. Magnus starts to think after this that maybe he and Flash are related after all.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He serves as the deuteragonist in the first chapter of season 8, helping Flash Sentry save a village from Banshee and Electra.
  • Disappeared Dad: It seems likely that he was one himself. He confirms that he slept with his girlfriend Sparkling Effervescence the day before he and the others were trapped in Limbo, and if she really did get pregnant from this event, it means he wasn't around for the birth or life of their child.
  • Famous Ancestor: Magnus is a distant ancestor to Sentry and both are heroic knights.
  • Good is Not Nice: When he hears of Banshee and Electra's criminal antics, Magnus turns surprisingly dark and wants them to be taken down with extreme prejudice. Flash does calm him down before he does anything crazy.
  • Heroic BSoD: After he loses to Electra in their first encounter, due to not understanding how water conducts electricity, he begins to think maybe he isn't cut out to be a soldier anymore, since he lacks what is common knowledge in this new time period and sees how many powerful ponies are now around when in the past they would be considered a rarity. Thankfully though, Flash convinces him not to give up on himself and to learn from his mistakes and try again, with Magnus taking what he has learned and using it against Electra in a Heroic Rematch.
  • I Choose to Stay: Once the Pony of Shadows is defeated, Magnus finds himself lost on how to integrate into Equestria after disappearing for over a millennia. However, after helping Flash save a village, he decides to stay there and act as their new protector, finally finding a new purpose in life.
  • Ironic Echo: When Electra zaps him unconscious during their first battle by zapping the water puddle he was standing in, she taunts him saying "Don't you know water conducts electricity?" before leaving. When he faces her in a Heroic Rematch, he tricks her into blasting a hole in a nearby aqueduct and blasts her with the water that shoots out, causing her to zap herself with her own powers. Once she is so injured she can't move, Magnus flies down to her and repeats her earlier line "Don't you know water conducts electricity?" before knocking her out.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: His Iconic Item is a shield known as Netitus. It is famous for being a fire-proof shield, but he discovers in his battle with Electra that it is also good at deflecting lightning.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Magnus lived over a thousand years before the main cast, when Equestria needed to fight foreign races. When he's brought back to the present, times have changed and these races, once considered enemies, are trying to integrate to Equestria, which Magnus finds a little difficult to adjust to. Fortunately, he does drop the attitude pretty quickly.
  • Pre-Climax Climax: Before he joins the other Pillars to fight the Pony of Shadows, Magnus consummates an affair with his lover, Sparkling Effervescence, which explains how Sentry was descended from Magnus over a thousand years later.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In canon there was never any confirmation that Flash Magnus was related to Flash Sentry despite the similarities the two seemed to share. Here, it is very likely that Flash Magnus is Flash Sentry's ancient ancestor.

Ponyville

Major characters who reside in Ponyville and support Flash and his friends.

    Apple Bloom
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/apple_bloom_castle_creator.png
Applejack's little sister and one of the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: She's more explicitly impulsive here. While her decision to consume Zecora's brew in "Cutie Pox" was reckless, she never received any warnings about consuming it, so it could be argued that she was just unaware of the consequences of her actions. In this series, she receives numerous warnings from Springer about how it could be dangerous and how it could have side effects due to being incomplete, yet Apple Bloom still consumes the brew anyways.
  • The Atoner: Despite being sent away by Flash during his search for Zecora, she disobeys him and follows along because she feels that her earlier trailing of Zecora caused the rest of the Mane Seven to come into contact with the Poison Joke flowers and thus she blames herself for their conditions, so she's dedicated to reversing her mistake.
  • Hide Your Children: Although she wants to witness the Royal Knights and the Mane Seven in action, she's sent away someplace safer, usually supervised by another non-action adult like Trail Blazer and Misty Veil.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the other Cutie Mark Crusaders. This is best demonstrated when Scootaloo is attacked and stung by a Scorpentine, but while Cheerilee and the other foals flee, Apple Bloom stays by Scootaloo's side with Sweetie Belle, even though Scootaloo is too heavy for them to carry.

    Big Macintosh
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/big_mac_vector_8957.png
Applejack's older brother.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Whenever he defeats someone in Lightning Blitz's battle royale game, he apologizes to them, only fighting them so that he can save his sister.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: He gives one to Sugar Belle, kicking her in the shin to stop her from telling Lightning Blitz where Rarity is, since she didn't want him seeing her with her ruined mane, before misleading him away from her to the orchard.
  • Big Brother Instinct: During Lightning's Blitz's takeover of Canterlot, Big Mac only pariticpates in his royale "game" to save Applejack, who's been petrified.
  • Tranquil Fury: When meeting Lightning Blitz for the first time since his banishment, it's clear that he hasn't quite forgiven him yet for his crimes, but he still maintains a quiet and stoic tone for the most part.
  • Wingding Eyes: Like in canon, his eyes turn into hearts when he thinks about his crush on Sugar Belle, which gets Lampshaded by Sugar when she talks about him with Rogue.

    Sweetie Belle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sweetie_belle_castle_creator.png
Rarity's little sister and one of the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
  • Adaptational Wimp: In canon, she was able to singlehandedly carry Rarity on her sofa during their camping trip in "Sleepless in Ponyville." Here, Springer helps her carry Rarity and her sofa and both aren't making much more progress than Sweetie Belle did in canon.
  • Hide Your Children: Like the other Crusaders, she often gets taken someplace safe whenever the Royal Knights and Mane Seven go on a dangerous adventure, much to Sweetie Belle's ire.
  • Kid Has a Point: Before Flash's trial to become a Royal Knight, most of his friends express excitement with Flash becoming a knight, but Sweetie Belle raises the possibility that he might not achieve that rank if he fails the test. Although her point is largely dismissed, it later gets proven right when Flash is beaten by Cold Steel and thus can't be promoted to a Royal Knight.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the other Cutie Mark Crusaders. This is best demonstrated when Scootaloo is attacked and stung by a Scorpentine, but while Cheerilee and the other foals flee, Sweetie Belle stays by Scootaloo's side with Apple Bloom, putting herself in danger for Scootaloo.

    Zecora
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zecora_9590.jpg
A zebra who lives in the Everfree Forest and engages in alchemy.
  • Berserk Button: A minor one with others questioning her rhyming behavior, which is shown when Springer asks whether her rhyming is natural behavior for Zebras or if Zecore practices her rhyming.
    Trixie Lulamoon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/52ee0aa0_d936_42b1_8610_0fba203824f6.png
An emotionally vulnerable pony that put on a boastful veneer, until she meets Flash Sentry and later becomes Princess Luna's apprentice.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Trixie's father sent her to the Manehatten Institute for Magical Learning, but Trixie's magical abilities were so advanced that the school had nothing left to teach her. Or at least that is what she claims at first. In reality, she couldn't meet the high expectations of the school. As a result, she was forced to drop out and disappoint her father, so she traveled around Equestria in the hopes of receiving the praise she never got from her father.
  • Adaptational Badass: In canon she was only a traveling magician who relied entirely on her own tricks. She resorted to cheating using the Alicorn Amulet to stand a chance against Twilight, and didn’t improve on actual magic until she started getting magic lessons from Starlight in season seven but still regularly struggled with more advanced spells. Here, she becomes Princesses Luna’s personal student in season one and quickly learns other forms of magic much quicker, including ice magic and dream magic.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In canon, she remained a minor antagonist for her first few appearances and didn’t become better until becoming friends with Starlight. Here, she changes much quicker thanks to her friendship with Flash, and ends up becoming Princess Luna’s student. Thanks to her early Character Development she ends up becoming real friends with Starlight right away, as opposed to canon where she initial only made friends with her to indirectly get back at Twilight before eventually bonding with her and becoming friends for real.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Springer calls her out for focusing so much on her father that it caused her to forget the whole experience from her time at Lost City of Faust.
  • Ascended Extra: In canon, she didn’t become a regular occurring character until season six. Here, she becomes a regular occurring character in season one.
  • Believing Their Own Lies: She admits that when she was a traveling showmare that when she resorted to telling lies about herself to get others to admire her she eventually started to believe these lies herself. It wasn’t until Flash saw the real her when he saved her from Big Score and his gang, and then called her out on her lies, that she eventually realized her mistake and started to change for the better thanks to Flash and Twilight.
  • Beyond the Impossible: In order to prepare for meeting with her father, she tries to learn an age spell since it is only for the highest level of unicorn. The problem is it is so advanced they are impossible to do, even for Celestia and Luna. She does eventually succeed in performing one, making a flower younger, and although it is downplayed due to only making it a day younger, it was still a successful attempt, and proves that she has surpassed her father.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: When she eventually reunited with her father, Regal Burst, she tells him she doesn’t need his approval anymore, and she knows he only came to see her to try to take credit for her becoming Luna’s student for himself. She finally proves to him and herself that she has surpassed him by performing an age spell on a flower, making it one day younger.
  • Can't Catch Up: She views herself as a rival to Twilight Sparkle, and when she became an alicorn, she saw this as a sign that she will never be on Twilight’s level.
  • Demoted to Extra: She wasn't part of the rescue group in "To Where and Back Again" like she was in canon because she was kidnapped by Changelings. Banshee531 states it would have been a bigger insult from Queen Chrysalis if she didn't kidnapped Trixie.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: In Season 9, after her mentor Princess Luna decides to retire soon and claims there is nothing left for her to teach Trixie, Trixie begins to wonder what she is supposed to do with her life now since she doesn't have a straightforward path like Twilight and Starlight did when they finished their studies, wanting to do something she'll be remembered for. She ultimately finds it when she decides to become the new student counselor at the School of Friendship.
  • Dream Walker: Its revealed in “Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep”, that she started teaching herself dream magic in order to help Luna out with her duties of looking over dreams.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: She manages to use a few small clues she noticed while fighting Terror Card, such as the glow in her eyes, the way she reaches for one card before stopping and grabbing another, how she is so difficult to hit, and the way Terror says she “sees everything”, to figure out that Terror can see the future. She also realizes this ability has limits, since Soarin and Cold managed to beat her previously.
  • Freudian Excuse: She initially puts on a boastful veneer because she dropped out of the Manehatten Institute for Magical Learning, which disappointed her father, so Trixie tries to show off during her shows to receive some form of praise elsewhere.
  • Friend to All Children: Acts extremely friendly to Shining Soul and Fire Heart, using her skills as a performer to impress them and easily win them over. They later happily tackle her in hugs when she visits them in "Trixie's Trial".
  • From Zero to Hero: Despite coming from a long line of successful unicorns, capable of being traced back to Starswirl the Bearded himself, she started out very unremarkable. She ended up dropping out of the Manehatten School of Magic, which her father was a teacher at, because she couldn't meet their expectations. She became a showmare and traveled from city to city, boasting about her great "abilities", or outright lying in some cases, in order to get the praise her father never gave her. Her life eventually changed for the better when she met and befriended Flash, which eventually led to her becoming Princess Luna's personal student.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: When she meets up with Starlight for lunch in "A Horse-Shoe In" and sees Starlight starting to have a panic attack at running the School of Friendship permanently and what might go wrong such as accidnetally poisoning someone, Trixie slaps her across the face before telling her to get ahold of herself.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: During “Kamen Pony”, she reveals to Springer and Flash that she always saw herself as a rival to Twilight, and Luna helped her to become better at magic. But when Twilight became an Alicorn, she saw it as a sign that she will never match Twilight, and it lead to her falling behind on her studies.
  • An Ice Person: She started learning ice magic after she had an adventure in an enchanted comic in “Kamen Pony”.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She became a showmare because she wanted to be praised by other ponies, when she dropped out of the Manehatten School of Magic, because she couldn’t meet their expectations.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Forms one with Ruby. They both get along well since they were both students of Princess Luna.
  • Like a Daughter to Me: Similar to Twilight's relationship with Celestia, Trixie eventually develops this with her mentor Princess Luna. Before Trixie leaves on an important mission to the Lost City of Faust with Flash and a few others, Luna tells her she has come to see her as a daughter.
  • Love Triangle: She briefly partakes in one between herself and Twilight for Flash. She tells Twilight she has plans to ask out Flash on a date during "Magic Duel", which causes Twilight to become jealous of her. Though Trixie bows out when she and Twilight realize Flash is clueless about both of their feelings for him and she decides to wait a bit longer before asking him out. Though she gives Twilight a friendly warning that she better ask Flash out herself eventually, because she won’t wait forever. Twilight and Flash do eventually become a couple, dropping this plot point.
  • Me's a Crowd: War of the Lost City shows that she can create illusions of herself to make a small army of herself.
  • Nice Girl: Unlike her canon self, this version of Trixie is extremely friendly and her boastful attitude was just a veneer that she drops after "Boast Busters."
  • Oh, Crap!: Unlike Princess Luna and Ruby Scarlet, she does not particularly enjoy when the three of them "go out for drinks" together. She has very terrified memories of the occasion, and when Luna and Ruby agree to do it again once Trixie and Ruby come back from the Lost City of Faust, Trixie can only mutter a horrified "not again" and her eyes shrink at the news.
  • Related in the Adaptation: She claims her family tree can be traced all the way back to Starswirl The Bearded.
  • Teleportation Spam: She is seen capable of performing multiple teleportation spells in quick succession when battling the cultists in War of the Lost City. She frequently uses it to either get herself out of danger or teleport her teammates to help them fight their enemies. She at one point managed to pull back to back teleportation spells on Soarin to perform a Hit-and-Run Tactics against Terror Card and Searing Salix.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Her father was one of the teachers at the Manehatten School of Magic, but when she couldn’t meet their expectations, she dropped out and became a showmare to get the praise that her father never gave her.
  • Woman Scorned: Played for Laughs; in "Magic Duel" she makes plans to ask Flash out on a date after learning that he and Twilight are not dating. However, when Flash talks to Twilight about her jealousy towards Trixie, he ends up revealing that he has no clue about either of their feelings and attraction towards him and only thinks Twilight is jealous that Trixie is endangering her status as the princess's number one student. Trixie is so enraged over his cluelessness that she and Twilight viciously attack him and beat him offscreen. She also decides to hold off on her plans to ask him out after that. Though ultimately downplayed since she warns Twilight she better make a move on Flash soon, because she won't wait forever, implying she still has a crush on Flash despite the incident, and she still remains good friends with Flash afterwards, even when he and Twilight officially become a couple.

    Doctor Time Turner
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doctor_whooves_hourglass_8568.png
Ponyville's eccentric scientist.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Zig-zagged. When Springer's stuck in a time loop, Turner believes that he's going through a time loop and tells him to meet him again in the next loop. However, when Springer does, Turner dismisses the idea of a time loop, believing that such an idea is crazy, even for him.
  • Moving the Goalposts: When Springer tries to get his help about being stuck in a time loop, he tells Springer to tell him what number he is thinking of. When the loop resets, Springer repeats the number to him, but he keeps making Springer tell him what number he is thinking of after that, forcing Springer to go through the loop several more times and remember each number each time.
  • Nice Guy: He's one of the few ponies to forgive Lightning with no transgressions whatsoever. In fact, when Lightning visits him, he offers him some advice to learn from his mistakes and move on from the past.
  • Noodle Incident: His current Mag-U-Lator is model three-thousand and one. When Lightning asks why, Time Turner claims to have had a three-thousand model and all he could find was a silver feather quill.
  • Super-Empowering: His Mag-U-Later can give ponies abilities that are exclusive to other races. To demonstrate, he uses it to temporarily give him the unicorn ability of levitating things with magic, despite being an earth pony.

    Rogue

A Batpony who was searching for golden apples. He ends up living on Sweet Apple Acres with the Apple family.
  • Appropriated Appellation: When he leads everyone to where his golden apple tree is so they can help him get it back, Applejack stops him from running off, telling him "going rogue and attackin' ain't gonna do a thing." Later, when they agree to let him stay on the farm and try to decide what to call him besides "the bat pony" or "the thestral", he tells them to call him "Rogue", remembering how Applejack used the word before and liked the sound of it.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Applejack shows him and her friends how she feeds the pigs and then explains each step to them, he says right to her face that it is stupid, actually making her flinch.
  • Cool Shades: Due to being a nocturnal creature, he needs to wear sunglasses when outside during the day, since the sunlight is harsh to his sensitive eyes.
  • Expy: He is based on Nightscream from Beast Machines, sharing the same color scheme, the same attitude, and scream ability.
  • Family of Choice: Rogue gets really close to the Apple family, appreciating that they gave him a home and a new life when he was found in Ponyville.
  • First Kiss: He has one with Applejack at the end of "Nightmare Night". When he finally gives her a Love Confession, he surprises her by stealing a quick kiss from her, lunging his head forward and planting his lips against hers. This is quickly followed by them sharing a few more when Applejack returns the favor and pulls him back into another kiss.
  • Given Name Reveal: His real name is Nightscreech.
  • Interspecies Romance: Rogue is a bat pony who eventually starts a relationship with Applejack, an earth pony.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: He doesn’t remember who he is, only that he woke up one day, and found himself in a cave with a tree of golden apples.
  • Mundane Utility: He can use his screaming to breakdown apples into mush, allowing the Apple family to use them to make more applesauce, apple pie and apple crumble filling much easier.
  • Official Couple: He and Applejack become lovers at the end of "Nightmare Night".
  • Poisonous Person: Like all other Batponies, he has a naturally occurring poison. However, due to a birth defect, he ends up poisoning himself, which was why he tried to steal Applejack’s apples to try to cure himself. By "Nightmare Night", he seems to have developed a greater immunity to his poison, no longer needing a golden apple for twenty-four hours.
  • Secret-Keeper: He actually sees the real Great Seedling at the end of "Going to Seed", proving that it is real. He briefly considers telling Applejack and Apple Bloom, but realizes the two of them will have more fun trying to catch the Great Seedling if they aren't sure if it's real or not, and decides to take it to his grave instead.
  • Ship Tease: He gets a few moments with Applejack.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: On the receiving end from Applejack. After he confesses his love to Applejack, including kissing her quickly on the lips, he tries to assure her it is okay with him if she doesn't feel the same way about him, only for her to cut him off by pulling him into another kiss. Though Rogue's eyes go wide with shock from this, he quickly closes them and kisses her back, with the two staying like that for a minute before pulling apart.
  • Sonic Scream: He can use his echolocation as a weapon. Something that no other Batpony has been known to use. It is eventually revealed that This is an ability that runs in his family.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He and Discord don't get along with each other at all. During the event of "To Where and Back Again", both of them insult and argue with each other.
  • Tempting Fate: When Spike asks if they should be worried about Discord using his "scary voice", Rogue shrugs it off by asking what's the worst he could do. This is immediately followed by them being attacked by the Squizard and his army.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Golden Apples.

Wonderbolts

A famed squadron of Pegasus acrobatics who are idolized by Rainbow Dash.

    Soarin Skies
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b77e41af_7689_46a2_9f6c_396ce378bb41.png
A member of the Wonderbolts and Flash Sentry's best friend.
  • Adaptational Context Change: Him clipping his wing in "Rainbow Falls" is changed slightly. Instead of being distracted by a pair of Cloudsdale cheerleaders, some sun just happens to get in his eyes while his goggles are off, making it more a case of bad luck than inattentiveness. This was also likely changed due to him and Rainbow Dash already being in a relationship by this point.
  • Alliterative Name: Soarin Skies
  • Ascended Extra: He was just a supporting Wonderbolt in canon, receiving a few speaking lines in a few episodes but never really being the main focus of any episode. Here, he is best friends with Flash Sentry, introduces the Theta State, and he and Rainbow Dash have plenty of Ship Tease moments together to the point they become a couple and later get married.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Rainbow. Both are skilled flyers, a part of the Wonderbolts, and loud snorers.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: He borrows Rainbow's "20% cooler" phrase to describe himself when showing off his Theta Mode to her.
  • Broken Pedestal: Wind Rider was the pegasus who inspired him to become a Wonderbolt when he was a colt, and saw him as his hero. After finding out that he framed Rainbow Dash to protect his record, he stopped looking up to him, and had him punished for his actions.
  • Butt-Monkey: Downplayed in War of the Lost City. Most members of the Cult of Shadow belittle and underestimate him, thinking that he's the weakest member of Flash's team. Even Cold Steel tends to disrespect him, believing that he's more of a stunt pony than a fighter. However, Soarin is able to handle his own throughout the story and puts his agility to good use against the Cult of Shadow.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Soarin, thanks to getting more focus than in canon gets a few chapters with him as the main focus.
    • "The Skies the Limit" has him come to Ponyville during a week long vacation to meet with Flash and have a chance to get closer to his crush Rainbow. He also introduces the Theta State, which becomes an important Chekhov's Gun for the remainder of the season.
    • "Wonderbolts Academy" has him present during Rainbow's training at the academy, and he convinces Spitfire to make Rainbow the lead pony instead of Lightning Dust.
    • "Rarity Investigates" primarily follows his point of view, where he defends Rainbow Dash from the accusations that she sent Spitfire away to take her spot while arguing with his former idol and mentor Wind Rider, and reflecting on his past with Wind Rider.
    • He is one of the ones chosen to go to The Lost City of Faust as part of Flash's team for War of the Lost City. Later in "A Thief's Tale", he finally manages to win a fight by himself, gaining the Theta Mode and using it to defeat Wingill and force Terror Card to retreat.
    • "Viva Las Pegasus" focuses on him taking Rainbow on a date to Las Pegasus over the weekend so she can be the last Wonderbolt to ride the Wild Blue Yonder, with him planning to propose to her while on the trip, and conquering his fear of being rejected by her after some help from his parents. The final scene of the chapter has the two of them getting married.
  • First Kiss: He and Rainbow share their first kiss together at the end of "Wonderbolt Academy, after he encourages Rainbow when she starts to feel stressed about being a lead-pony.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • His presence during the events of "Wonderbolt Academy", leads to Rainbow Dash being made a lead-pony instead of Lightning Dust.
    • Thanks to being in a relationship with Rainbow Dash, he’s not as harsh towards her in "Rarity Investigates" when she gets framed by Wind Rider, and he makes sure that the rest of the Wonderbolts don’t jump to conclusions like they did in canon.
  • From Zero to Hero: He started out as a very weak flyer, but dreamed of joining the Wonderbolts once he saw them perform. Nobody supported his dream though, not even his own parents, but he never stopped training. He eventually entered and won the Best Young Flyers Competition and got to meet his personal hero, Wind Rider, who encouraged his dream, and he got his cutie mark from it. In the Present he is now second-in-command of the Wonderbolts and one of the best flyers in all of Equestria.
  • Happily Married: He finally marries Rainbow Dash at the end of "Viva Las Pegasus", after spending the whole chapter trying to bring himself to propose to her.
  • In-Universe Catharsis: When Storm Blade resurfaces in "A Returning Storm", Soarin agrees to join the team in going after him, looking to settle the score for all the times Storm beat him during the war in the Lost City. He does just that when he is the one to land the finishing hit on Storm, knocking him out as he attempts to kill Cold Steel. Soarin even comments it was satisfying since he finally got to even the score.
  • It's All My Fault: He realized that if he had waited for Rainbow Dash to become an official Wonderbolt before entering a relationship with her, the board of directors wouldn't have tried to reject her.
  • Like a Son to Me: After Rainbow's parents found out he was dating their daughter they both became thrilled and welcomed him with open wings as if he were their own son. Then he officially becomes their son-in-law when he marries Rainbow Dash.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Soarin has no last name in canon, here his full name is Soarin Skies.
  • Official Couple: It is revealed in "Jakhowl-Day" that he and Rainbow have been dating since Rainbow's time at the Wonderbolt Academy, but have kept it a Scret Relationship due to not wanting anyone to think Rainbow is getting special treatment. They go public at the end of the chapter after Springer discovers them and encourages them to come clean. They finally get married at the end of "Viva Las Pegasus" after he proposed to her, which Rainbow gladly accepted.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: He is afraid he will end up being this for the team selected to travel to the Lost City of Faust, since out of all six of them he is the only one that isn't a Royal Knight, a Defender of the Peace, or a student of the princess. He feels he is just "fast".
  • Poor Communication Kills: Soarin just assumed that Rainbow Dash would want to have kids with him one day, and didn't discuss it with her before their wedding, or even months after they got married. When the topic eventually comes up the two have an awkward conversation where Rainbow sadly admits she doesn't think she wants to ever have kids. Though Soarin tries to be understanding of her decision, and is okay with her suggested compromise of adopting, it still saddens him. Spitfire and Fleetfoot even call him out on how he didn't have such an important conversation with her until now. Fortunately for him though Rainbow starts to come around to the idea of having kids of her own later.
  • Rage Against the Mentor: When Wind Rider, his former mentor when he was training at the academy, accuses his girlfriend Rainbow Dash of sending Spitfire away to take her spot and threatens her with expulsion from the Wonderbolts forever, Soarin calls him out on his bad attitude and attacking her without any evidence. When Wind Rider begins insulting Soarin's relationship with Rainbow and implies she only got as far as she has already due to sleeping with Soarin, Soarin nearly punches him in the teeth. After Rarity discovers Wind Rider framed Rainbow and tried to get her expelled to protect his record, Soarin loses all the respect he had for his former mentor.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • He is the second-in-command of the Wonderbolts and often has his head on straight when it comes to making decisions. Not only is he friendly to just about everyone, he is willingly to call out Spitfire when he feels she is making a mistake.
    • He sides with Rainbow Dash when Wind Rider frames her for giving Spitfire a fake letter saying that her mother was sick. He also makes sure that the rest of the Wonderbolts do not automatically side with Wind Rider without any evidence that Rainbow Dash may be guilty.
  • Rescue Romance: He gets a crush on Rainbow Dash after she saves him and his teammates during Sonic Rainboom.
  • Secret Relationship: He and Rainbow Dash became a couple during her time at the Wonderbolt Academy, but kept it a secret from everyone, including Rainbow's friends and Soarin's teammates, since they didn't want anyone to think Rainbow was getting special privileges. They eventually go public with their relationship after Springer discovers it and encourages them to come clean with everyone, saying it isn't good to build their relationship through lies and secrets.
  • Strong and Skilled: He explains that after he joined the Wonderbolts he eventually reached his physical limits, which stopped him from getting any better. He eventually trained his mind through meditation and achieved the Theta State, allowing him to enhance his information and senses for a few seconds. This makes him one of the best flyers in the Wonderbolts, and he proves he is skilled enough to beat Rainbow Dash in their first race.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: When he has to work with Cold Steel in War of the Lost City. Cold Steel hardly respects Soarin and constantly belittles him as a mere stunt pony, which creates a tense relationship between the two. Eventually, both are chosen to fight in "The Trials of Teamwork", in which both are in conflict with each other, until both work together to defeat Terror Card and Storm Blade.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • In "A Thief's Tale", he unlocks the Theta Mode, and uses it to singlehandedly defeat both Wingill and Terror Card, eliminating the former and forcing the ladder to retreat.
    • "Newbie Dash" reveals that ever since he returned from the war, Soarin has been at the top of his game, with his flying skills improved and having won the last seven races he has competed in "by a mile" according to Rainbow. It is also noted he didn't use his Theta Mode for any of this, only using it for shows instead of races.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Just like it was implied in canon, his favorite food is pie. It is always his first choice for a meal whenever he is hungry. He's not even upset when Rainbow Dash, his crush, tells him that she actually hates pies since that just means more pie for him instead.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: "Viva Las Pegasus" has him plan to finally ask Rainbow Dash to marry him, but he is unsure on how to ask her exactly. He nearly asks her while the two of them are watching a romantic rainbow fountain display, but chickens out at the last moment. After getting some encouragement from his parents, he sets up a successful attempt where he lures Rainbow Dash to a mountain with the prospect of racing her to a picnic there, only to secretly setoff a firework show that explode in the colors of her mane, then skywriting "RAINBOW DASH, WILL YOU MARRY ME?" for her to see. She happily accepts his proposal and the two have their wedding at the end of the chapter.
  • Was It All a Lie?: After he learns how his former idol and mentor, Wind Rider, tried to frame Rainbow Dash and have her expelled from the Wonderbolts, he wonders if he was always like that and if everything he ever told him, the advice that inspired him and helped make him who he is, was all a lie.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • He argues with Spitfire when he sees that she is planning to make Lightning Dust the lead-pony instead of Rainbow Dash. Spitfire thinks that Soarin is only arguing in Rainbow's favor because he is in love with her, but Soarin convinces her that she is playing favorites with Lightning Dust because she reminded Spitfire of herself when she started out, and makes her realize that being made a wing pony instead of a lead-pony was the best for her, just like it should be for Lightning.
    • He is a bit upset with Rainbow Dash when she confesses that she faked her injuries to avoid picking between flying for either Ponyville or Cloudsdale. Though in this case he just seems more disappointed than anything and quickly goes along with her when she resolves to fix everything.
  • Willfully Weak: After he gains the Theta Mode it is explained he has chosen not to use it in any of his Wonderbolt races, since he feels like it would be cheating due to him gaining it from a magical power-up instead of his own training. He is fine with using it for shows and when in actual fights though.
  • Would Hit a Girl:
    • Downplayed; when he and Rainbow are comforting each other over what happened with Wind Rider and assuring themselves they won't let themselves fall from grace like he did, Soarin promises Rainbow he will be sure to kick her flank for her until she gets back in line if he sees her start slipping like Wind Rider did, right after she made the promise to do the same thing to him. Though Rainbow claims that he wouldn't stand a chance against her in a fight, which they both share a laugh over.
    • Played Straight later. He has no trouble fighting female enemies, like Terror Card and Tempera, who are both part of the Cult of Shadow.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: He tells Rainbow Dash this when she says she is starting to feel stressed about being a lead-pony at the academy. He says he felt the exact same way when he was a lead-pony and he turned out just fine, and he already can tell she is ten times the leader he ever was. This reassurance also leads to them sharing a kiss and becoming a couple.

    Spitfire
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/large_5_8.png
The captain of the Wonderbolts.
  • Awesome by Analysis: During her race with Rainbow Dash in "Newbie Dash" when they need to navigate to the center of a maze made of storm clouds, she is shown to get to the center much easier than Rainbow by carefully checking which path has the most static electricity.
  • Demoted to Extra: Although she is still important as the captain of the Wonderbolts, Soarin replaces her as the most prominent member of the team, appearing more often than her and in some cases even replacing her in minor roles.
  • Double Entendre: She says that the reason she asked for her and Rainbow to have private quarters in "Rarity Investigates" is because she doesn't want for Rainbow and Soarin "exhausting themselves" before the show.
  • For Want Of A Nail: It is essentially thanks to her that Flash and Soarin met and became best friends. During Flash's training, Grand Hoof requested a few Wonderbolts come to the castle to help with his aerial combat. However, Spitfire only sent one Wonderbolt due to not wanting to spare any hooves, and she chose to send Soarin since he was the newest member at the time. Thus, that was how Soarin and Flash met and eventually became best friends.
  • Get Out!: When she finally has enough of Lightning Dust's lack of teamwork and the tornado incident that almost killed Rainbow's friends, Spitfire kicks her out of the academy and yells at her to leave immediately.
Spitfire: I SAID DISMISSED! GET OFF OF MY RUNWAY AND LEAVE THIS ACADEMY NOW!
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: When she gets injured during her race with Rainbow, Rainbow starts to carry her out of a collapsing mountain while being attacked by Quarry Eels. Spitfire just mumbles out for Rainbow to drop her, or she'll never make it. But Rainbow refuses to leave her behind and manages to get them both out with a Sonic Rainboom.
  • Rage Breaking Point: She explodes into a fit of rage at Lightning Dust after she shows no remorse or regret for nearly killing ponies with a tornado, and tried to pin the blame on her.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She vouches for Rainbow Dash in "Newbie Dash" when the Board of Directors try to prevent her from officially joining, due to their belief that Rainbow didn’t earn her way into the Wonderbolts.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She and all Wonderbolts tell off the board of directors for rejecting Rainbow Dash and putting a pointless race that injures her and Rainbow, and threatens to quit if they don't accepts Rainbow Dash.
  • You Remind Me of X: Lightning Dust reminded her of herself, which was why she was going to make her lead-pony instead of Rainbow Dash. Soarin talked her out of it, and convinced her to make Rainbow Dash lead-pony instead.

Other Equestrians

Other friendly ponies who live outside of Ponyville, but still reside in Equestria.

    Sugar Belle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_8204.png
A baker from Our Town and Big Mac's crush.
  • Hypocrite: A light example. As she and Rogue are conversing, Sugar Belle encourages Rogue to open up about his crush on Applejack, telling him that it's best to put all of their sexual tension to rest. However, Rogue comments that Sugar Belle herself doesn't follow the same advice she gives, as she has a crush on Big Mac, but is also too afraid about revealing it.
  • Shipper on Deck: When she learns of Rogue's friendship with Applejack, she teases about him having a crush on her, which he denies, but his blushing gives away his true feelings.

    Sunburst
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/645252f3_6247_4d39_b1b5_053605a2359b.png
Starlight Glimmer’s childhood friend.
  • Constantly Curious: He's constantly sending invites to Hiveena and Thorax to discuss the nature of Changelings like how they're born or how they extract love.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It was mentioned in Part 1 of "To Where and Back Again" that he was captured by the Changelings at the Crystal Empire, but he is completely absent in Part 2 when everyone is saved.

    Starswirl the Bearded
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_swirl.png
A unicorn who serves as Twilight's idol and came into close contact with dragon culture. He, along with the other Pillars of Equestria, eventually return to the present day when they are released from limbo.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: He appeared during the two-part finale for season 7 of the official show, but this version of him first appears during the interim between seasons 6 and 7.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: When he encounters the dragons, he's quite curious and laidback compared to his canon appearance. Though this is Justified because his appearance in Dragon's Awakening takes place when he was younger and more idealistic than in the future. This also gives him more understandable reasons for why he's so callous in the present, namely about how the loss of Silverbolt and Fira by Malafear led him to fear losing any more loved ones and become paranoid that Stygian might become another villain.
  • Affectionate Nickname: When they first met, Silverbolt called him "Chops" after Starswirl's muttonchops, in which it's stuck throughout their friendship, even after Starswirl tries shaving it in favor of a beard.
  • It's All My Fault: After hearing about Fira's death, he blames himself for not saving her, in which Silverbolt reassures him that he has nothing to be sorry for and that Malafear is solely responsible for the tragedy.
  • Parental Substitute: With Fira dead and his own plans to take Malafear down with him, Silverbolt blesses Starswirl to look after Spike's egg when he's gone.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In the season 7 finale, he's just as much of a condescending jerk as his canon self, but his present day personality is uniquely contrasted with his more curious, kind self in Dragon's Awakening to show how deeply the loss of Silverbolt and Fira affected him. Fortunately, he also lightens up by the end too.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He and Silverbolt frequently snark and make fun of each other, but they're friends nonetheless.

    Jaden Chalice

A young Crystal Pony and Ruby's apprentice.
  • Ascended Fanboy: He was a big fan of Ruby's for sometime before officially becoming her apprentice.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Jaden follows after Sombra and Ruby in "The Quest of Redemption" to help them find the last piece of Amore's statue, mainly because he doesn't want to leave his mentor alone with Sombra. But he didn't properly prepare for the cold outside the Crystal Empire like they did. When they pull out their rations to eat, he pulls out a chocolate bar only to find it frozen solid when he tries to bite it due to his bag not being insulated. The same thing happened to his water bottle, with it now being frozen solid and as heavy as a brick.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: His archery is very impressive and Fire thinks that he would impress Ruby by showing it off, but Jaden disagrees, too afraid that he'll mess up and embarrass himself before his idol.
  • Jerkass to One: He's uncharacteristically hostile toward Sombra and like the other Crystal Ponies, Jaden treats him like a monster for his actions to Crystal Empire.
  • Master Archer: He manages to get seven bullseyes in a row, and is later able to strike Trial-R from the castle with a crossbow. Ruby even says he is already a master markspony, an impressive feat for someone his age.
  • Stalker without a Crush: He spies on Ruby Scarlet out of admiration for her fighting prowess, but he didn't openly meet her because he was too shy.

Non-Equestrian Allies

Supporting characters who live outside of Equestria.

    Thorax
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_thorax.png
Click here to see Thorax's original form
A rogue changeling who Flash meets during the Canterlot Wedding. His later appearance sees Hiveena released from prison.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Thorax went through a process all Changelings do that make them loyal to the queen of the hive. But when Thorax went through it, he unknowingly ended up pleading his loyalty to Hiveena instead of Chrysalis, because in his subconscious he knew that Hiveena was the better leader.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In canon, he did not appear until season 6. Here, he appears during the season 2 finale, and joins the heroes in season 5.
  • Berserk Button: Insulting Hivena. He is shocked when he hears in "Time for A Changeling" that she is in prison for the crimes she committed while working for Doom Raizer, and he quickly becomes angered when everyone keeps saying she is pure evil.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Thorax saves Spike when they first meet, like in canon. But instead of just saving him from falling off a cliff he also saves him from a cragadile.
  • The Bus Came Back: After "A Canterlot Wedding", he appears in a flashback in "Copycat Fight" and a full-blown return in "Time for a Changeling".
  • Friend to All Children: While celebrating Heartswarming in the Crystal Empire, Thorax keeps all of the young crystal ponies entertained by dancing with them and changing into several cute animals for them to pet and ride on. He also helps keep Flurry Heart entertained by transforming into various animals for her.
  • Morality Pet: He acts as one for Hiveena. She was always nice to him when they were growing up in the hive, and so when he hears she is in prison he vouches for her to help get her out. When Hiveena sees him again, she agrees to the terms the ponies offer her, that she will be released if she helps them stop Chrysalis when she returns and in exchange they will help make her ruler of the Changeling.
  • Rogue Drone: Its explained that he didn’t feel as loyal to Chrysalis as the other Changelings, because he felt deep down that Hiveena was a better leader than Chrysalis, and thus the magical pledge all Changelings give to the queen was overridden and he ended up pledging to Hiveena instead of Chrysalis.
  • Ship Tease: He gets this with Hiveena in "Time for A Changeling", where his first sight of Hiveena is framed like Love at First Sight.

    Dragon Lord Ember
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ember.png
Daughter of former Dragon Lord Torch, who Spike befriends and grants the title of Dragon Lord to.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The mind-controlled Flicker uses the Bloodstone Scepter and a book to control her and the rest of the dragons. Fortunately, Spike manages to snap her back to normal.
  • Fighting from the Inside: While she is being controlled like the rest of the dragons, she manages to break free when Spike calls out to her with his "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight.
  • Insistent Terminology: She reminds everyone she is the former Dragon Lord, since she was beaten by Malafear and lost the Bloodstone Scepter to him.
  • Pet the Dog: Even though she still briefly ditches Spike like in canon, the last thing she tells him before leaving, instead of just "dragons don't do friendship", is that she hopes he finds his friends when they go missing, and tells him most of the caves are one-way, so they should eventually meet back up with them.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: After the Malafear incident, her "punishment" for Flicker accidentally unleashing Malafear is to assign him to be the Dragon Lands Chronicler for the rest of his life. She realizes that part of the problem was how the dragons didn't bother to keep records of their history, which was why nobody knew about Malafear and Flicker accidentally unleashed him, so she wants for Flicker to do help ensure nothing like that happens again.
  • The Worf Effect: She was beaten easily by Mind-Controlled Flicker.

    Flicker

A friendly dragon that meets Spike and the ponies during the Gauntlet of Fire competition.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: He explains he is something of an archaeologist, fascinated with learning more about the past of dragons.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Implied. When being introduced, Garble mockingly asks if he should be "digging up some old rock" instead of attending Torch's summons, indicating that his interest in archaeology has made him unpopular in dragon society, where brute strength is valued over intellect.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: He's controlled by Malafear as his host for most of Dragon's Awakening.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He easily puts Garble in his place with a few quick remarks. He also bluntly states he was able to see through the disguises that Twilight, Rarity, and the twins used because "he's not an idiot".
  • Establishing Character Moment: His introduction scene has him stand up to Garble to get him to leave Spike alone, and later helping him when Torch speaks to him about wanting to leave and revealing he knows about his pony friends in disguise. This all shows that Flicker is nicer than the other dragons seen so far and is a lot smarter too.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • He isn't a big fan of Garble due to his bad attitude, and would gladly leave him trapped under a boulder if given the choice, but he chooses to at least be kind enough to him to not share his secrets with others, simply saying Garble is scared to be himself and has a layer he keeps hidden, but not giving anything specific away.
    • He also calls out Torch for forcing baby dragons like Spike to compete in Gauntlet of Fire and feels Spike is too young to take the responsibility of Dragon Lord.
  • Nice Guy: Unlike most of his fellow dragons, Flicker is completely non-hostile to ponies and actually tries helping Spike in the Gauntlet of Fire.
  • Self-Imposed Exile: He briefly goes into one in "A Dragon's Place", due to believing he doesn't deserve to go back to the Dragon Lands after he accidentally unleashed Malafear due to digging up the past. He tries living in Ponyville with Spike teaching him a few things, until Ember shows up and assigns him to be the Dragon Lands Chronicler as his "punishment".

    Echo

A Batpony and Rogue's mother.
  • Breeding Slave: Downplayed. She was pressured by Fangpire to mate again to produce thestrals with the sonic blast, but she did get to choose her partner and she only had to give birth to one child. Still doesn't make it any less revolting though.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Fangpire ordered her son Rogue to be killed when he believed he became a burden. So she snuck out to drop him off in Canterlot where she belived he would be safe, but after finding the Golden Apple Tree underground when they were chased by several other thestrals she left him there to be safe and gave him a potion to wipe his memories.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After being mistreated from Fangpire, she finally stand up to him and uses her Sonic Blast on him.
  • Mama Bear: She and her sons use their Sonic Blast on Fangpire when he was about to kill Rogue.

    Banshee
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dfjle82_387f8a0b_1114_48f6_aafd_a8e54b7ded61_9.jpg

Rogue's younger half-brother.
  • Author Avatar: Banshee shares the name and appearance of the author's own O.C.
  • Big Brother Worship: Despite having never met his older half-brother Rogue before, he was told stories about him by his mom and once he does meet him he is nothing but loving to him.
  • Breeding Slave: Fangpire intends to pressure Banshee into becoming this, as he wants him to pass down the rare sonic blast trait to his offspring and, unlike Echo, he can mate several times.
  • Cheerful Child: He is the younger brother of Rogue and has nothing but positive interactions with the rest of the cast.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted in that he shares the same name as the criminal of the same name. Flash even taunts the criminal Banshee over how the kid Banshee also has the same kind of powers as her but was already stronger than her.

    Sirius
The leader and eldest of the Jakhowls living in Aurarora.
  • Big Good: He is part of the council of elders that govern Aurarora and, as their most senior member, is treated as the leader of the kingdom as a whole.
  • Cool Old Guy: He is an elder Jakhowl, part of the high elders and their leader. He also displays the rare ability Aura-scaping, allowing himself and others to view the memories of others through connecting their aura.
  • Exposition Beam: He has a rare ability called Aura-scraping that functions as this. By connecting his aura to others, he can view their memories, and he can show those memories to anyone else he connects to as well, or even show them their own memories. He uses this ability on Springer, Ace, and Mira to see their lives up to this point, confirming what they have told them about how the world has changed, and shows these memories to Mirage, Razor Fang, and the rest of the elders. Despite apparently seeing these memories for hours, only a minute passes in real time before they all return to normal.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Razor Fang impales him through the stomach from behind.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He and his kingdom never learned that the rest of the Jakhowl race went extinct thousands of years ago, only being informed of this when Equestria makes contact with them.
  • Morality Chain Beyond the Grave: After his daughter Mirage discovers that Razor Fang was the one who actually killed him, Mirage would like nothing more than to walk right up to Razor and use a Steel Paw on his throat. But she knows that her father wouldn't want that, and instead frees the elders and regroups with Springer and his friends to think of a proper way to take Razor down.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Sirius doesn't share in the xenophobia that younger Jakhowls espouse, making peace with Springer's companions when they first meet and civilly welcoming them to his kingdom.
  • Tempting Fate: As peaceful negotiations between the Jakhowls of Aurarora and the ponies of Equestria are going along smoothly, Sirius thinks to himself he is glad he got to live to see this happen and is excited to see the outside world, saying that he hopes he can go see the Crystal Empire. But as soon as he says this, he is abruptly murdered by Razor Fang.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He dies within the first five chapters of the story he debuts in.
  • You Are in Command Now: As he slowly succumbs to his fatal wounds, he turns to Springer and tells him to take care of their tribe, assuring him that if he does what he believes is right, he won't regret it. This essentially means he was passing on leadership to Springer with his last breath before he died.

    Mirage
Sirius' daughter and one of the first Jakhowls encountered by Springer when Aurarora's presence is revealed.
  • Action Girl: She is shown to be one of the main fighters of Aurarora, with her and her friends attacking the group when they first approach Aurarora and fighting Springer evenly until he uses his Mega Mode. She later helps with Ace and Mira's training.
  • The Chief's Daughter: She is the daughter of Sirius, the chief of Aurarora and eldest member. In similar fashion to this trope, she forms a close relationship with an outsider, Springer, and teaches him about their customs and traditions. Although being the chief's daughter does not automatically grant her leadership after him, as seen when she is not even considered for the next leader after Razor Fang murders her father, but she still remains close to Springer after he becomes the new chief after her father's death and helps him with his position, but they don't become an Official Couple until the end of "Jakhowls in Equestria".
  • Easily Forgiven: Springer and the others don't hold anything against her for attacking them unprovoked. To be fair, after she views the memories of Springer and the pups and realizes her mistake, she apologizes for her "rough" first meeting.
  • Improperly Paranoid: When Springer and his friends arrive near Aurarora's vicinty, Mirage and her fellow Jakhowls attack them out of paranoia that they are invaders. Even when they try to explain themselves, Mirage doesn't listen and only ceases when Sirius arrives to the scene.
  • Love at First Punch: Downplayed between her and Springer. When she first met Springer, she attacked him due to believing he was a traitor for siding with ponies. Eventually though, when Springer had enough of her, he went into his Mega Mode and defeated her by sending her and her friends crashing into the mountain. Mirage doesn't develop romantic feelings for Springer from this exactly, but is impressed by him and his form enough that she wonders if he is the one the prophecy spoke of instead of Razor Fang, and the two do slowly have Ship Tease moments with each other afterwards.
  • Me's a Crowd: She has an ability to create fakes of herself by combining her aura with her speed, making her afterimages solid. She admits this technique doesn't have a name, until Mira decides to call them "Aura Mirages".
  • Missing Mom: Her mother died when she was young, being one of the victims of a sickness that infected the village.
  • Pink Means Feminine: She's a female Jakhowl and her chest and stomach are hot pink.
  • Ship Tease: She shares a few moments with Springer throughout the story after their initial encounter, with both taking an interest in each other.
  • With Us or Against Us: She considers all ponies to be the mortal enemies of Jakhowls. If any member of her race that befriends a pony, she deduces that they've been brainwashed and thus an enemy to the Jakhowls.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: While she has no problem attacking Flash, Twilight, Spike, or Springer, who she views as enemies due to the former three being non-Jakhowls and seeing the latter as a Category Traitor, she believes that Ace and Mira are simply "brainwashed" and tells the others to try not to hurt them so they can try to "undo their brainwashing".

Student Six

School of Friendship's Students

    Sandbar
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sandbar.png
A pony student attending the School of Friendship.

    Gallus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gallus_character.png
A griffon student attending the School of Friendship.
  • Adaptational Badass: In canon, he eventually becomes a Royal Guard, but in this continuity, he's a potential Royal Knight.
  • Blatant Lies: He claims that he's not afraid of Skybreaker, even though it's clear that he's intimidated by his past victory against a bunch of invading griffons in Cloudsdale.
  • Commonality Connection: He starts to bond with Iron Core over both of them being orphans. Both of them lost their parents at a young age and were taken in by someone else, but unlike Gallus Iron was old enough to remember his parents. Iron also recognizes this as why Gallus has an attitude, and gets him to open up to him.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He gets a solo focus chapter in "The Griffon and the Knight" about becoming a potential apprentice to Iron.
  • Dude, Where's My Reward?: In "The Griffon and the Knight", after he and Iron Core help the Apple Family pull their cart through town after Big Mac twists his ankle and Granny Smith gives them both an apple each for their help, Gallus expresses annoyance to Iron that the two of them "broke their backs" moving a heavy cart and only get an apple to show for it. Iron tells him they aren't doing the job to get something out of it themselves but to help others.
  • Fire-Forged Friendship: An almost literal example with Iron Core. Gallus is paired with Iron to follow him for a day as part of an assignment, but initially finds him to be very boring. After he starts opening up to him a bit thanks to their Commonality Connection of being orphans, the two end up working together to stop a massive fire that erupted in the Everfree Forest, with Gallus being impressed by Iron battling the fire. In turn, Gallus also impresses Iron when he risks his life to save a nest of baby birds from the fire, and Iron later decides to take on Gallus as his apprentice after Gallus graduates.
  • I Can't Dance: He admits he can't dance in "She's All Yak" to Ace, which is why he declined Silverstream asking him to be her date to the dance. After he confesses this to Silverstream she decides to teach him.
  • Interspecies Romance: A future adult version of Fire Heart states that Gallus eventually marries Silverstream.
  • The Load: He was the most useless member of the Student Six during Flash's exercise to rescue a burning building's occupants, barely doing anything to help his teammates and putting in the bare minimum effort to the few tasks he actually did.
  • Teasing the Substitute Teacher: When Wild Smile substitutes for Pinkie Pie while she is away getting yovidaphone lessons, Gallus is the first student to start messing with him, and the other students follow his example by pulling pranks on Wild too. Once Wild gets confidence in his teaching though, he manages to put a stop to Gallus and his attempts to cause trouble by threatening to not let him take part in their fun activities.

    Smolder
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smolder_2.png
A dragon student attending the school of Friendship.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: She is much ruder and less willing to work with the other students than she was in canon. Though this is somewhat justified since it was still the beginning of the school year before she had begun to learn anything about friendship.
  • Berserk Button: She doesn't like being reminded of the time she was brainwashed by Malafear. When Fire Heart recognizes her from that event, she just glares at him for mentioning it.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Smolder made an unnamed cameo appearance during Dragon's Awakening, as one of the numerous dragons being controlled by Malafear.
  • Ineffectual Loner: During the exercise in Flash's first class, Smolder decides that since she is fireproof she can just fly into the burning house and save the trapped pony without worrying about putting out the fire. But while inside she gets trapped under some rubble that collapses on top of her, and refuses help from Ocellus when she comes in to help her.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She was unaware that her brother Garble competed in the Gauntlet of Fire to try to become the next Dragon Lord, or that he tried to kill Spike and Ember to win or how he planned to start a war with the ponies if he won. She initially doesn't believe this when Flicker tells her, thinking he's just joking, until it is confirmed by Fire Heart and Garble himself.
  • One of the Boys: Thanks to her tomboy nature she tends to have more in common with the guys in her group of friends than her fellow girls. Notably, when the Student Six and jakhowl twins get into a food fight with each other in "What Lies Beneath", Smolder joins Gallus, Sandbar, and Ace's team against the rest of the girls.
  • Poor Communication Kills: She informs Spike of The Molt and the "molt effect" dragons go through during it, but she forgets to tell him that the molt effect is only temporary and that dragons can return home once it is done, making him panic he's going to get kicked out forever. She also fails to mention that Spike will get his wings after his molt is done, which would have made him a bit less anxious and nervous. When Flicker ends up explaining this to everyone, he expresses surprise that Smolder didn't explain any of this herself.

    Yona
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yona_by_digimonlover101_dc372bz.png
A yak student attending the school of Friendship.
  • The Load: During Flash's first class, when the students need to work together to put out a house that's on fire and save the pony trapped inside, Yona trips over her own braids and smashes into the unstable building, causing it to collapse.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, Yona is given a bigger room than the others because there were "mishaps" when she was given a normal-sized room.

    Silverstream
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/silverstream_by_digimonlover101_dc4kwvi.png
A hippogriff student attending the school of Friendship.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In canon she makes her first appearance at the start of Season 8, while here she makes a brief appearance during The Movie, where she and her brother Terramar meet Fire Heart and Shining Soul when they visit Seaquestria.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: During the Student Six's first training exercise with Flash, Silverstream tries to get buckets of water to put out a flaming house and save the occupants. Instead, she gets distracted when she jumps in the lake and plays in the water, wasting time.
  • Epic Fail: When she sees Fire Heart training to use a chain mace with a rope and tennis ball, she asks if she can try. She almost instantly ends up tying herself up with it.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Fire Heart explains to her how he got so good at using a practice chain mace, just taking it one step at a time to eventually get a great outcome, Silverstream realizes with that line of logic, they can figure out why they failed the exercise by looking for answers "at the beginning instead of the end".
  • Interspecies Romance: A future adult version of Fire Heart states that Silverstream eventually marries Gallus.

    Ocellus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ocellus.png
A changeling student attending the school of Friendship.
  • Corpsing: This happens to her in-universe while helping with a film production in "Lights, Camera, Infraction". While having shape-shifted into a dragon she falls to the ground while acting like she was stabbed and stays still, pretending to be dead. But while the other actors are proceeding with the scene she feels an itch, being forced to stay as still as possible until the director yells cut. Then she immediately changes back to normal and scratches like crazy.
  • Forgot About Her Powers: During Flash's first class during an exercise when the students need to put out a fire and save a trapped pony, Ocellus never tries to use her shapeshifting abilities to her advantage. It isn't until after they have failed the exercise and Flash makes the suggestion that she realizes she could have done something like turn into an elephant to help put out the fire.
  • Freudian Excuse: Ocellus was never able to read anything when Chrysalis was in charge of the hive, since all she and anyone else did was learn how to infiltrate other races and steal love from them. So now she has become a major bookworm to make up for all the time she lost.
  • Mundane Utility: Ocellus helps a film crew finish their movie by using her Shapeshifting abilities to fill in for several animatronic monsters.
  • Smart Girl: She is the smartest academically of the students, with the first day of class showing she already knows all of the Elements of Harmony.
  • Troll: When the Student Six are all discussing how their cultures celebrate love, Ocellus makes up a fake story of how when a female sees a male she likes she tackles him to the ground and forcibly lays eggs in his stomach, which then hatch out of him like a piñata. As everyone else is reacting in horror at this, she laughs for a moment before saying she was just kidding.

Deities (Spoilers)

Powerful entities that are responsible for the creation of Equestria.

    Sacred Light
An entity that is the source of Flash Sentry's powers.
  • Creator's Favorite: An In-Universe example. Of all of the beings it created, it favored the Jakhowls the most.
  • God in Human Form: Like the Corrupted Shadow, it wished to experience the world it helped create and made a physical form for itself, abandoning most of its power. Thus, it became the first alicorn.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Faust mentions that it was the more aggressive one between it and the Corrupted Shadow.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: It's the light that juxtaposes with the Corrupted Shadow's darkness.
  • Light Is Good: Downplayed. Although it does serve as the source of Flash Sentry's powers and is composed of light energy, Faust also mentions that it was usually the more aggressive one between it and the Corrupted Shadow.
  • The Maker: It helped create life in Equestria, which started with single-celled organisms to more complex beings.

    Corrupted Shadow
An entity that serves as the antithesis to the Sacred Light and the source of Shadow Corrupter's power.
  • Dark Is Evil: Downplayed. Although it is the source of Shadow Corrupter's power and is composed of dark energy, Faust also mentions that it is the gentler one between it and the Sacred Light.
  • God in Human Form: Like the Sacred Light, it wished to experience the world it helped create and made a physical form for itself, abandoning most of its power. Thus, it became the first umbrum.
  • God of Evil: Surprisingly subverted. Even though it is composed of dark energy, it isn't actively malicious and only really serves as a balance to the light energy of the Sacred Light.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Could be considered this for the entire series. For all the good the Sacred Light does, the Corrupted Shadow needs to balance it, which led to the creation of species like the umbrum and Tricksters, whom would become antagonists throughout the series. Not that the Corrupted Shadow is actively malicious, though.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: It's the dark that juxtaposes with the Sacred Light.
  • The Maker: Like the Sacred Light, it helped create life in Equestria.
  • Necessarily Evil: While the Corrupted Shadow itself is not actively malicious, many of its creations are to ensure that it balances out the Sacred Light.
  • Old Shame: An In-Universe example. To balance the Sacred Light's creation of the Jakhowls, the Corrupted Shadow created the Tricksters, which were supposed to be jakhowls that could use magic. However, the Tricksters became malicious creatures and the Corrupter Shadow always deemed them to be a failure.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: It created the umbrum, whom slowly fell to evil and waged a conflict to conquer the world, until they were defeated by the alicorns.

    Faust
The god of creation.
  • Above Good and Evil: Discussed. Due to being an outer god, she didn’t see her actions as evil, but necessary to ensure the survival of the universe.
  • Above the Gods: She was the one who created the universe in the first place and on a higher league than both the Sacred Light and Corrupted Shadow.
  • Balance Between Good and Evil: She needs to do this or else the universe would collapse in on itself. Hence, she created the Sacred Light and Corrupted Shadow to balance each other.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She took steps to make sure Flash and Shadow wouldn't fight in her "game", but several instances occur that she didn't anticipate end up causing them to clash several times, like Flash and Shadow battling each other in Sombra's mind, the two of them being chosen for the same battle in "A Picture of One's Life", and both of them defeating all six members of the opposing team in "Seven on One: The War's End".
  • God: She's the literal creator of the universe.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Her rationale on some of the morally questionable things that she has done to ensure the survival of the universe.
  • I Warned You: She tried to warn Shadow Corrupter of the consequences of trying to steal her power.
  • Mrs. Exposition: She explains the entire creation of Equestria to Flash Sentry, Shadow Corrupter, and King Sombra in "Genesis."
  • My Greatest Failure: She views failing to save the Jackhowls, and failing to prevent Luna from becoming Nightmare Moon as this.
  • Underestimating Badassery: After Flash and Shadow's teams tied with seven orbs each, she tried to decide a winner by putting Flash and Shadow into a battle royale against all of the opposing team. She thought that despite how powerful they were, there was no way they could defeat six skilled fighters all by themselves, and that the winner would be whoever managed to defeat more foes and recover the most orbs before being defeated. But to her shock, Flash and Shadow managed to defeat all their opponents, forcing her to once again separate them before they could fight and think of a new plan.
