Strike Witches

Formed by Lieutenant Colonel Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke in 1942, the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, also known as the Strike Witches, is a specialist unit composed entirely of witches originally stationed in Britannia and later in Romagna. Their primary duty is defending the area where they are stationed from Neuroi. After liberating Gallia from the Neuroi in 1944, they were disbanded, however they were reformed in Romagna six months later to help defend the area after the disastrous Operation Trajanus. During the liberation of Gallia, they were one of the squadrons under the command of Trevor Maloney; after they were reformed to defend Romagna, they were placed under the command of Adolfine Galland.

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/501st_icon.png

  • Amplifier Artifact: Their striker units function as magical amplifiers as well strengthening their spells.
  • Child Soldiers: They range in age form twelve to twenty (meaning the older ones don't count for this trope). Given the generally optimistic tone of the show, the darker side of this trope is never explored.
  • Five Rounds Rapid: The vast majority of their firepower accomplishes exactly nothing. Only when the core is exposed or when the Neuroi deploys drones does their firepower actually do something.
    • This has little to do with the guns the girls are using and a lot to do with the structure of the Neuroi themselves. Pretty much everyone can inflict significant damage on the shell of a Neuroi, the problem is that said shells can completely regenerate from having whole wings cleaved off of them in just a few seconds, so nothing short of a direct hit on the core will put them down.
    • Zig-Zagged: More accurately: for most Heavy and Capital-class Neuroi, while damage can be done easier with a Witch's magically enhanced weapons; a Neuroi's regeneration, and at times shell durability, can render any damage repaired and thus moot at best unless the core is destroyed. With smaller Neuroi units and drones; Witches can destroy them with impressive ease, although exceptions are known to exist in either direction.
  • Flying Brick: In addition to a nifty unique power, all witches have increased strength, endurance, and durability. They also have access to basic magics like shields and flight, meaning they are essentially all flying bricks.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Anyone who's watched the film before Operation Victory Arrow will catch on that the team will reunite at the end of the film.
  • Improbably Female Cast: The overwhelmingly female demographics of the witches is hardly unique since magic is pretty much an all girl party.
  • Instant Runes: These are created whenever the girls raise a shield and whenever they take off.
  • Little Bit Beastly: The girls grow animal features when they use magic.
  • Little Miss Badass: The girls may be teenagers but they can kick major ass when they need to.
  • More Dakka: The standard issue gun is a heavy machine gun.
  • Multinational Team: Since witches are so rare, talent is pulled from everywhere.
  • Power Glows: Whenever the girls of the 501st call upon their magic they glow in addition to growing animal features.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: For the same reason that witches are pulled from everywhere, they are also pulled from all walks of life. Also before the Neuroi invasion the military appears to be composed of mostly men so there was a scramble to recruit witches who are almost exclusively female from the civilian populations. This coupled with the seeming lack of formal training means that the Strike Witches are mildly military to put it lightly.

    Master Sergeant Yoshika Miyafuji
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yoshika_miyafuji_clear.png
Voiced by: Misato Fukuen (Japanese), Cherami Leigh (English)Foreign VAs
"Her latent ability is impressive indeed. Not only with regards to her magic, but she also has perseverance and determination. It's my mission and duty to guide her on her path to becoming a full-fledged Witch, for the sake of my, no, the world's benefactor, Dr. Miyafuji." —Mio

The daughter of nurse Sayaka Miyafuji and the late engineer Ichiro Miyafuji and granddaughter of nurse Yoshiko Akimoto, Yoshika comes from a family of magical doctors on the island nation of Fuso. Ichiro was responsible for the creation of the Striker Unit, magically powered engines that amplify magic, to counter the Neuroi. However, Ichiro was killed in the war tainting Yoshika's perception of it. She was initially reluctant when Mio Sakamoto came to recruit her, but after helping to defend the Fuso fleet from a Neuroi attack, she agreed to join the 501st as a sergeant. Yoshika's striker unit is based on the Mitsubishi Zero A6M3a and she carries around a Type 99 13mm machine gun. She's named after the WWII ace Kaneyoshi Muto.

  • 10-Minute Retirement: Yoshika quits the military in the finale of Strike Witches 2, but it doesn't stick and She's Back in action when the 501st JFW reunites and help her fight the Neuroi towards the end of Strike Witches: The Movie.
  • Accidental Pervert: She has a habit of staring and grabbing onto the breasts of the well endowed members of the unit, though Lynette's the usual target. She even unconsciously does it in her sleep!
  • All-Loving Heroine: On top of just being a really pleasant person who doesn't bear grudges, she's the only one willing to negotiate with the Neuroi. This is exaggerated in Strike Witches: The Movie, despite or (perhaps because of) her lack of power.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Yoshika normally shows an incredibly obvious attraction to girls, but one episode also shows her getting a love letter from an enlisted man and she does appear to entertain the idea or at least play along with it with Lynette encouraging it. Minna breaks it off before anything can come of it, however.
  • Badass Adorable: Takes several levels in badass over the course of the series. Remains cute as ever.
  • Badass Normal: In the film, even without her Witch Powers she destroyed a huge Neuroi tower with a machine-gun she can barely carry and a Jeep all by herself.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her shields are noted to be far stronger than average and she seems to have a higher magical capacity than most.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's very nearly a pacifist. The first time she really seems to want the Neuroi to die right now is after it almost kills Lynne. She even goes on a short Roaring Rampage of Revenge to do it. After a Dungeon Bypass straight through its center of motion, firing her machine gun all the way.
  • Birthday Hater: Yoshika ignores her birthday, August 18, since it's also the anniversary of the day her father Ichiro Miyafuji died in a laboratory accident in 1939. Fortunately, she gets better by the end of "We're the Same", since Sanya also shares her birthday.
  • Bridal Carry: She carries Shizuka this way after her magic reactivates in the finale of Road to Berlin.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She first appears in a photograph on a newspaper featuring Mio that Hikari finds in the first episode of the Brave Witches series. She makes a surprise appearance herself later on as the Witch who ends up healing and helping Takami recover from her coma at the end of Episode 9. Though brief in the anime, Yoshika's interactions with Takami in that episode are expanded upon in a Drama CD, where we learn that Yoshika helping Takami fully recover removes the dishonorable discharge she received at the end of the first season.
  • Cowboy Cop: She frequently goes on her own independent investigations whenever she gets stonewalled by her superiors.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: In the film, it seems that Yoshika must stop and help others whenever there is an "opportunity" to help, even though that means facing up against a Neuroi with nothing but a machine gun that she can barely lift.
  • Combat Medic: She possesses strong healing magic yet still mixes it up in combat.
  • Demoted to Extra: While Yoshika is a major character in the Strike Witches TV series and film, she gets minor appearances in Brave Witches and Luminous Witches.
  • Disappeared Dad: She initially only joined the war to learn more about what happened to her missing father, Ichiro. It later turns out that he died in an accidental lab explosion.
  • Determinator: She refuses to lose to the Neuroi, no matter how bleak the situation gets.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Yoshika is blissfully unaware of her growing magical prowess in season two.
  • Doesn't Like Guns: At first. She refuses to even touch her standard issue sidearm when she first joins the 501st due to moral objections. Soon she is forced to deal with the reality of the Neuroi and relents.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Since Shirley is the one who taught her how to drive and she picked up the same bad habits.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma:
    • At the end of the Strike Witches episode "Fast, Big, Soft", Yoshika grabs the boobs of Shirley while she is unconscious due to fatigue. And butt naked.
    • Narrowly averted, in a Running Gag in the 501st Joint Fighter Wing Takeoff! Movie involves Yoshika coming across seemingly unconscious girls and thinking about using it as an opportunity to grope their breasts under the guise of performing CPR. She always ends up deciding against it.
  • Experienced Protagonist: After the events of the first season, her experiences as a veteran soldier really shows. Despite being depowered during the Movie and handicapped during Road To Berlin, Yoshika is still abled and competent enough to serve in the front lines and save people in her own way.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Well, not to Neuroi. But taming the bears in The Movie has to count for something.
  • From Zero to Hero: She goes from being a simple medical student to a capable member of the 501st JFW.
  • Generation Xerox: She wanted to become a doctor like her mother and grandmother before her and plans to inherit their family clinic someday.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: She's kept the same short haircut she's had since her childhood based on flashbacks.
  • Have We Met Yet?: The Yoshika who appears in the mobile game, World Witches: United Front is the novice fledgling who just joined the 501st from 1944, ie, from season 1. So when she meets characters she would eventually interact with after the first season like Takami (who Yoshika meets and helps in the interim between seasons 1 and 2 of the original series) and Shizuka (who she meets in 1945 in The Movie), she ends up being confused because of their familiarity with her even though she has yet to meet them from the time she's from.
  • Healing Hands: She tends to channel her healing magic through her hands.
  • Heroic Resolve: Mio has noted that Yoshika's magical abilities seem to increase under stress.
    • This is exaggerated at Strike Witches 2, when, after exhausting all her magical power, she musters up some more through sheer determination. The rest of the squadron follows suit.
    • And once more in the film, while bleeding out on the ground, the collective call of everyone in the 501st lets her get her magic back.
    • Another example from The Movie: She doesn't let the little difficulty of having no magic keep her from lugging a gun into a nearby Jeep in order to protect a village There's never ever a good time to get on her bad side.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: At the end of Strike Witches 2, she uses up all her magical power in order to save Mio and destroy the Neuroi core.
  • Hero on Hiatus: Invoked. Due to using up all of her magic after defending Kiel from the Neuroi's Suicide Attack in Road to Berlin, she can't use it again until she gets enough rest for the next ten days but this does nothing to stop her from treating the wounded by requesting the Ratte crew to take her with them.
  • Honor Before Reason: The last few episodes of Strike Witches are almost a direct cause of her honorable nature trumping observational evidence. Then again...
  • The Idealist Was Right: The 501st admitted that Yoshika's ultimately correct about her attempts to communicate with the Neuroi, if only that the Warlock incident didn't occur.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: She is willing to break military rules for the safety of the 501st and everyone else if she needs to.
  • Idiots Cannot Catch Colds: According to episode 8 of Strike Witches 2, she's never caught a cold in her life.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She takes on the features of a Shiba Inu when she uses magic.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Older than most examples, but she looks the part.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: She seems pretty innocent, but shows an inordinate interest in other girls' busts, including Lynne's. Eventually, the entire squadron becomes well aware of her perverted nature.
  • The Medic: This is pretty much Yoshika's specialty and she makes good use of her skills as a surgeon to patch up injuries whenever she can't use her magic (usually due to non-fatal Heroic Sacrifices) as shown in The Movie and Road to Berlin. Since she comes from a family of doctors, it does makes sense.
  • Military Maverick: Throughout the course of her story arc, Yoshika gains fame for disregarding orders — whether it be from Minna or the higher-ranking leadership — and still bring out positive results. Even with her unstable magical power, she doesn't have second thoughts about breaking the rules.
  • Naïve Newcomer: The newest one into the squadron, and due to Japan's relative isolation from the war she has very little idea of what has been going on.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Yoshika was unable to say goodbye to her beloved father Ichiro Miyafuji before his untimely death.
  • Nice Girl: She is one of the nicest girls in the 501st and doesn't resent anyone, including Perrine.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Towards the end of episode 4 in Strike Witches, Yoshika tells Barkhorn that she can't leave her behind.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: In Strike Witches Yoshika's striker unit is a memento left by her dead father. She later uses it to blow up a gigantic Neuroi core and liberate Gallia. Likewise the Shinden Striker Unit in Strike Witches 2, which is based on her father's research.
  • Power Incontinence: In Road to Berlin, Yoshika's magical power becomes unstable due to a drop in her magical pressure, possibly as a side effect of regaining it during the events of The Movie.
  • Ramming Always Works:
    • Towards the end of The Movie, Yoshika rams into the burrowing battleship Neuroi to destroy it for good.
    • She also rams into the escaping Bell Neuroi in the finale of Road of Berlin, giving Minna the chance to finish it off.
  • Rank Up: In Strike Witches, Yoshika attains the rank of Sergeant. By the end of Strike Witches 2, she is promoted to Ensign. In Road to Berlin, she's promoted to Master Sergeant.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: At the end of The Movie, Yoshika regains Shizuka's respect after the latter realizes what how the 501st works.
  • Sailor Fuku: Her signature outfit is this over a school swimsuit.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Yoshika's modus operandi is to bend military rules that she doesn't agree to where necessary.
  • She's Back:
    • Yoshika's role in The Movie is this in a nutshell: she regains her magical powers while fighting off a battleship Neuroi.
    • Her magic hasn't been fully recovered throughout the course of Road to Berlin even after she controls her magical pressure but this is completely removed in the finale after Shizuka is shot down trying to protect her and things are going south quickly for the Neuroi.
  • Stone Wall: Her shields are very good, but she seems to have a far lower kill rate than everybody else in the squadron.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She gets most of her features from her mother and is all but virtually a younger version of her grandmother with darker hair.
  • Supreme Chef: She's the 501st's primary chef and a dang good one at that.
  • Tagalong Kid: She requested the Ratte crew to bring her along as their field medic in Road to Berlin.
  • Team Chef: She's pressed into this role after joining because nobody else can cook, although Lynette is often seen helping her.
    • Even after the other members start showing off their culinary skills, Yoshika and Lynette are often the default chefs of the unit.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She goes from a medical officer to a witch capable of taking down Neuroi. Come season 2 onwards, her magic also continues to grow until she becomes powerful enough to cast area-wide shields by Road to Berlin. A huge leap from the same inexperienced Witch who used to collapse after trying to heal her friend in the first episode of the original season.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Or reawakening in this case, but her magic went from being completely spent to fully charged in an instant near the end of Road to Berlin after Shizuka is seriously injured protecting her from the Neuroi swarm.
  • You Remind Me of X: Yoshika reminds both Trude and Takami of their own little sisters, Chris and Hikari respectively, which is a big part of why they're so fond of her.

    Master Sergeant Lynette Bishop ("Lynne")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lynne_bishop_clear.png
Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka (Japanese), Kate Bristol (English)Foreign VAs
"Other members of the unit? Lynne was the first friend I made after coming here to Britannia. She showed me around in the base and was very kind! That made me happy... And... that big bosom.... wah! Nothing! It's nothing!" — Yoshika

Lynette is a very personable if a bit shaky, sniper from Britannia. She's the middle child of eight siblings and was sometimes overlooked. Because of this, she's domestic and painfully shy. She joined the Strike Witches shortly before Yoshika to help protect her homeland. Lynette is assigned to be Yoshika's roommate, where the two quickly become friends. Her striker unit is based on the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX and she lugs around a Boys Anti-Tank Rifle in battle. Her sister, Wilma Bishop, is named after the WWI Ace William Avery Bishop.

    Major Mio Sakamoto
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mio_sakamoto_clear.png
Voiced by: Saeko Chiba (Japanese, 2007–2008), Saori Seto (Japanese, 2010–onwards), Kira Vincent-Davis (English)Foreign VAs
"Sakamoto-san? She's kind, but can be pretty strict sometimes. She told me about the work my father had done, and I'm very grateful for that. Although it surprised me when we met for the first time and she told me that “I would come to her sooner or later”!" —Yoshika

Mio, the second in command of the Strike Witches, worked with Ichiro Miyafuji on the Striker Units and is, therefore, the oldest witch. As a veteran of the initial fights against the Neuroi, she is far tougher and more disciplined than most of the Strike Witches. Her primary job is to train new recruits and takes a no-nonsense "tough love" approach to her duties. As the second in command of the Strike Witches, she supports Minna and maintains discipline when out of battle and locates the weak point of Neuroi with her magic eye in battle. Her striker is based on the Mitsubishi Zero A6M3a in season one and the Kawanishi N1K in season two: in battle, she carries a Type 99 13mm machine gun and a katana. Her character is named after WWII aces Saburo Sakai. She is known for her distinctive, hearty laugh.

  • Badass in Distress: In the finale of Strike Witches 2, she is absorbed into a Neuroi core. You don't get much more distressed than that.
  • Big Sister Mentor: To her favorite protege, Yoshika, who she looks out for and believes in the most in the squadron. Mio is very eager to see how much Yoshika can grow in her career as a budding Witch.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: She's known for her rolling, jolly laugh of approval for innocence and/or righteous behavior.
  • Bar Sinister: Oddly enough this appears on her eyepatch as well as her emblem.
  • Brought Down to Badass: In The Movie, she appears with an ordinary warplane to deliver the Shinden Unit to Yoshika.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: After having a jug of wine dropped on her, Mio immediately proceeds to give Commander Minna a full-on kiss and runs into a cave.
  • Competence Zone: Her biggest problem is that she's aging out of it. When she turned 20, her shields became too weak to stop a Neuroi on their own. By forging Reppumaru, she buys herself a bit more time, but she ultimately runs out of magic entirely before she can die in battle like she wants to.
  • Cool Big Sis: Serves as this role to ease newcomers into their new military life.
  • Cool Sword: Reppumaru, a katana she forges herself using magic and it can block lasers.
  • Death Seeker: Though far from a fatalist, Mio still intends her death to be a glorious one in battle, befitting of a Fuso Warrior. Tragically, she finally plays this trope straight in the penultimate episode of Strike Witches 2, when her life as a warrior comes to an end.
  • Demoted to Extra: After losing her powers at the end of season 2, she's relegated to a supporting character in the movie and in Road to Berlin, where Shizuka eventually takes her place as the second most important character in the story next to Yoshika.
  • Determinator: She never gives up in the battlefield, even when her powers start to fade away, she wants to stay on the battlefield even if cost her life.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: According to supplemental material, new Fusou Navy recruits call her "Sakamoto the Demon" behind her back.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Mio has a reputation for being a very strict mentor to her students and subordinates training under her. However, she can be downright quirky and hammy when not in military mode, and is eager to let Yoshika defy military rules if it means she'll be able to live up to her resolve to save people from the Neuroi. Mio also gets rather wild when drunk, as seen in Season 2.
  • Enemy Scan: When she looks at a Neuroi with her magic eye, she can see its weak point.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She wears a patch that hides her Neuroi core-detecting right eye. She does eventually lose this eyepatch by the time of Strike Witches: The Movie.
  • Feeling Their Age: The fact that for Strike Witches old age starts somewhere around 20, with a decline in magic power, is explored in Strike Witches 2. Mio pushes herself to stay in action, against fellow high-ranking officer Minna's advice, ultimately receiving first a minor then a grave injury.
  • Fragile Speedster: In Strike Witches 2 her striker unit is upgraded, making it far faster and more maneuverable. She doesn't have a shield, so the only thing between her and extra crispy is her reflexes.
  • Heroic Resolve: In the finale of Strike Witches 2, she snaps out of a Heroic BSoD after knowing the Yamato mission failed. She rushes into Yamato ship with little to none magic power for reactivating the ship in order to blow up the Neuroi nest.
  • Heroic RRoD: Mio nearly runs herself to the ground by using Reppumaru to eat up all of her magic in the finale of Strike Witches 2.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted. She's prepared to pull one in the finale of Strike Witches 2, but Yoshika saves her.
  • Honor Before Reason: On top of acting like a stereotypical samurai, she considers betraying her code to be worse than death since her ability is critical to the squadron's success. Even after she loses her shield she continues to fight, even though even a glancing hit from a Neuroi laser would be enough to critically injure her.
  • Hot-Blooded: A bit more tempered than most, but is not one to back down from a fight.
  • Lady of War: Again, modeled after a stereotypical samurai.
  • The Lancer: She is the second in command of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing and often helps her commander when she can. For example, when enacting discipline, she often plays "bad cop" to Minna's "good cop".
  • Little Bit Beastly: She takes on Doberman traits when she uses magic.
  • Losing Is Worse Than Death: And Mio unhesitantly charged into the latter, having finally and literally exhausted her life as a warrior in the final episodes of Strike Witches 2.
  • Magic Eye: Her special magic power manifests in her right eye, which she normally keeps covered up. When she lifts her patch, her glowing purple eye can see very far away and locate the core inside a Neuroi. Without this power, her team would have to dismantle each Neuroi completely to try and find its core, and never mind the special cases that can move their cores mid-battle or hide them in another Neuroi unit. For Mio, it's just one more reason not to quit flying just because she's too old.
  • Magic Knight: She lacks some magical capacity but makes up for it with increased martial skill.
  • Meaningful Name: Her sword means "gale" and is named after a Japanese plane model that never entered service.
  • Number Two: She's Minna's second in command.
  • Oblivious to Love: She shows absolutely no awareness of the fact that both Perrine and Minna have crushes on her. Minna at least tries to be subtle about it, but not noticing Perrine's feelings takes work.
Sakamoto: "Why are your faces all red?"
Bishop: "They're naughty girls with dirty minds and they heard you and Miyafuji talking about 'sticking it in.'"
Sakamoto: "Hmm... You might have to spell it out for me."
  • Older Than She Looks: She's twenty years old, despite looking like a teenager at first appearance.
  • Proud Warrior Race Girl: The picture of a classical Japanese Warrior, albeit Gender Flipped.
  • Shower of Angst: Towards the end of Strike Witches 2 after knowing her powers are fading away.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is her rank squadron commander or major?
    • Or properly, she should be a Lieutenant Commander and Yoshika a Petty Officer of some sort.
    • Changing rank designations is not unusual when naval officers serve with non-naval units. In such cases, they tend to use the equivalent land or air force ranks, or whatever is closest.
  • Suicide Mission: At the end of Strike Witches 2, she rushes into Yamato to reactivate the ship again while it was infested by Neurois.
  • Super-Senses: Her power is Enhanced Visual Acuity which grants her telescopic vision along with the ability to identify a Neuroi's core.
  • Sword and Gun: She uses a katana alongside with gun weapons.
  • This Cannot Be!: After Reppuzan failed in the battle, Mio goes through another brief Heroic BSoD.

    Lieutenant Colonel Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/minna_wilcke_clear.png
Voiced by: Rie Tanaka (Japanese), Anastasia Muñoz (English)Foreign VAs
"Lieutenant Colonel Minna? Yes, she's a fantastic person! She's always smiling... and she feels like a very mature woman. I wish I could be more like her. She somewhat reminds me of a mother." —Yoshika

Minna is the leader of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing and the commander of the Karlsland Air Force. After the Neuroi appeared and her lover Kurt Flachfeld was killed, she gave up her dream of becoming a singer to join the Karlsland Air Force. Because of her traumatic past, the safety of her subordinates is her top priority. Despite her kind and gentle demeanor, she will go to any lengths to protect her subordinates. She is even willing to issue orders specifically to prevent them from being hurt and she was the one behind the order forbidding male workers in the base from socializing with the witches. Her striker unit is based on the Messerschmitt BF109G2 and her weapon is the MG42 machine gun. Her character is named after the WWII ace Wolf-Dietrich Wilcke.

  • Badass Teacher: She teaches witches from time to time and can kick major ass if she needs to.
  • Berserk Button: As shown in 501st Joint Fighter Wing Takeoff!, being mistaken for a humanoid Neuroi causes the usually kind and motherly Minna to go out of control (via rage). Just ask Shirley.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite her demeanor, it's worth noting that her familiar is a wolf.
  • Broken Bird: She's devastated with the death of her lover, Kurt Flachfeld, and while she does enforce existing witch anti-fraternization laws (as non-witch personnel fraternizing with military witches, regardless of rank or station; range from strongly discouraged to outright prohibited), as commanding officers are to ensure military regulations are followed, implications come across as she enforces those existing regulations with greater strictness then most, given that she has first hand experience one of the reasons why they were established in the military to begin with regarding relationships between military witches and non-witch military personnel in general and romantic relations in particular.
  • The Captain: Despite her demeanor, she's clearly the one running things although she doesn't hold the rank of Captain.
  • Colonel Badass: She hates being chained to a desk, preferring to get down and dirty out in the field with her subordinates. She's one of the few squadron leaders who regularly participates in combat missions. Most of the others either do so only rarely in major operations, or don't even fly at all anymore.
  • Extreme Omnivore: While not a Big Eater, Not only can Minna consume foods and drinks that the rest of the squadron can barely stomach, but she actually likes them. Examples include ginger tea that Lynette put too much sugar in, and Lamprey oil (She asked for seconds!).
  • Glamorous Wartime Singer: Minna tried to be a singer earlier in the war.
  • Heartbroken Badass: She may be a high-ranking officer of the Karlsland Air Force, but after the death of her childhood friend Kurt Flachfeld, the series can testify how more badass she became.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: After Minna lost Kurt during the war, she doesn't want the witches to avoid experiencing the same pain she did.
  • Lethal Chef: In the 501st Joint Fighter Wing Takeoff! 4-koma, her ability to stomach anything is translated to her being an extremely horrible cook who unfortunately insists on doing all of the cooking, at least until Yoshika joins the team.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Takes on the features of a wolf when using magic.
  • Mama Bear: She is willing to go to any lengths to prevent her subordinates from being harmed.
  • Meaningful Name: Her archetype pilot is named Wolf, she gains wolf features.
  • Mission Control: Minna's power gives her acute knowledge of her surroundings which allows her to determine unit positions in 3D, unit allegiance, and unit health. She uses this in battle to help her direct her forces. When she sits out of a battle, she is usually in front of a radar giving orders.
  • A Mother to Her Men: Or in her case, "A Mother to Her Girls". She cares deeply for her subordinates and they return the favor.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: She is the leader of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing and Karlsland Air Force, and extremely powerful and skilled.
  • Shower of Angst: Does this in the ninth episode of Road to Berlin for the same reason as Mio's.
  • Team Mom: The novels mention that she and Mio have a Good Cop/Bad Cop approach to discipline, with Mio as the Bad Cop and Minna as the Good Cop.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Minna calls Trude out for her reckless behavior at the end of "Thanks". Given the nature of the 501st, Minna has to resort to this almost Once an Episode.
    • She's on the receiving end of this in Road to Berlin, this time by Trude and Erica over her attempted Suicide Attack.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She's willing to do a lot to ensure her subordinate's safety, including pulling a gun on one of her best friends, which stems from losing Kurt during the war.
    • While Witch anti-fraternization laws are established as being a blanket general regulation in all military's and units to some degree to discourage romantic relationships between witches and non-witches for fairly reasonable grounds of preventing witches being taken advantage of, mitigate loss of non-witch comrads in wartime or avoiding..... *ahem* "accidents" from happening to much needed witches in the war effort: Minna does admittedly enforce this regulation to a degree greater than average to the point of also discouraging unnecessarily fraternization between the girls and the maintenance staff which even for other other units is a bit much... but the reason behind it is somewhat justified given her last love interest was a striker mechanic who died and is a strong emotional issue for her and she reasonably knows first hand why such regulations are in place.
  • X-Ray Vision: Minna's ability essentially lets her see everything in her proximity out to a respectable yet unspecified distance. In battle, it makes her a mobile CIC: out of battle it allows her to keep tabs on her subordinates.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: After the 501st's emergency meeting over the fog surrounding Kiel in Road to Berlin, Trude reminded her that they don't have much time left as Witches due to them nearing their age limit. Minna is painfully aware of this.

    Lieutenant Perrine Henriette Clostermann

"Perrine? Yes, it feels like she's always mad at me. I wonder why...? I know I make a lot of mistakes all the time, but I still don't think she has to be that hard on me... Sakamoto-san told me being strict on someone is a way to show you have hopes for them, but I wonder..." —Yoshika

Perrine is a rich Gallian noble that saw her home destroyed when the Neuroi invaded Gallia. She joined the Strike Witches in their liberation of Gallia to help free her homeland from the Neuroi. She admires Mio and quickly develops a dislike of Yoshika due to their closeness. Her dislike eventually turns to full blown jealousy as she challenges Yoshika to a duel. Eventually, she realizes that Yoshika is a comrade but she still makes constant attempts to win Mio's attention and to make Yoshika look bad. Her striker unit is based on the Arsenal VG 39 and her weapon is the Bren Light Machine Gun Mk1. She is also seen carrying a rapier in some official art, which doesn't show up until midway through Strike Witches 2. Her character is named after the WWII Ace Pierre Clostermann.

  • Alpha Bitch: She's snobby, rich, and insufferable. This starts getting downplayed by the last few episodes of Strike Witches. In Strike Witches 2 she has become much better and by the Movie and 3rd OVA she has become better a person and less insufferable, though still retaining something of a prim and proper attitude, though only seems to get mad when pressed into stressful situations.
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • Her foot seems magnetically attracted to her mouth: One time she insults Miyafuji for bringing in foul tasting Lamprey oil as a health drink only to find out seconds later that Mio brought it. Also, almost everything she does tends to backfire horribly for her.
    • Used literally in the Strike Witches 2 episode "It's All Creepy-Crawly" — a Neuroi bug crawls into her butt crack, and when she pulls down her tights and panties Francesca shoots her in the rear with a high-pressure fire hose (using a scope from a Mosin-Nagant no less).
  • Character Development: Probably the series' best example. She goes from a snooty, self-centered Yandere to a friendly, even humble person who runs an orphanage & a school. She never really gets over Mio, though.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Holds Mio with the utmost of respect, and resents anyone getting too chummy with her (especially Yoshika who, like Mio, is a native of Japan the Fuso Empire).
  • Cool Sword: Often seen with one in the promo art, and in Strike Witches 2 it makes its appearance. A different rapier is used to destroy a golem.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She doesn't like to be called by her full name of "Perrine-Henriette", which is why her name is simply written as "Perrine H.".
  • Doomed Hometown: Her homeland of Gallia was destroyed during the Neuroi's 1939 invasion.
  • French Jerk: She's from Gallia and can come off as a jerk towards everyone else.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: There's a heart of gold in there somewhere, you would need a crowbar and heavy digging equipment to find it, though.
    • And that kind and gentle big sister hugging and playing with children in Episode 6 of Strike Witches 2 can't be the same Rich Bitch that's mean to Yoshika, can she? Oh, you have got to be kidding!!
    • Strike Witches 2 reveals she's practically penniless. All that huge hazard pay she's getting? All donated to charity. She also sold most of her family's heirlooms to raise money for the Gallia rebuilding effort.
  • Impoverished Patrician: Aside from her vast estate which she has transformed into an orphanage, she has sold off virtually everything else of value to help fund the Gallian rebuilding effort.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she can be insufferable and an Alpha Bitch, she does care about her homeland and her friends.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Gains the features of a Chartreux cat when using her magic.
  • Luminescent Blush: She has one whenever Mio is in any way involved, when she's outraged, and when she's embarrassed which is why there seems to be on permanently glued to her face. For example, see the picture.
  • Ojou: She definitely used to be high class and wealthy. She even does the laugh.
  • Psycho Lesbian: Challenging a rookie to a duel with live ammunition over a crush is really really pushing it, even if the ammo was just used for intimidation. In fairness, after Mio's brush with death in the later episodes of Strike Witches and having a firm but fair heart to heart with her, Perrine does eventually get over it in Strike Witches 2.
  • Refusal of the Call: After the liberation of Gallia she was offered command of the 506th, but turned it down so she could focus on rebuilding Gallia.
  • Rich Bitch: Though it's less flaunting her wealth and more complaining about how unrefined her comrades (read: Yoshika) are. It's eventually averted in Strike Witches 2, the third OVA & the film. She converted her extravagant manor into an orphanage and is deeply involved with Gallian reconstruction efforts.
  • Shock and Awe: This is her power. It messes up her hair so she doesn't use it often.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In The Movie, after Gallia is liberated, she runs an orphanage (which is also a school) with Amelie. She's also very nice toward Yoshika and Shizuka.
  • Yandere: While she's initially attached to Mio to the point of becoming jealous with Yoshika, she eventually gets over it in Strike Witches 2.

    Ensign Francesca Lucchini

Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō (Japanese), Trina Nishimura (English)Foreign VAs
"Lucchini always eats the things I cook with a smile on her face. Things like that makes me happy! But it feels like she's always sleeping in some odd place... is that really okay?" —Yoshika

The daughter of Emiliana Lucchini, Francesca is a talented and cheerful witch from the Duchy of Romagna. Unlike most other members of the 501st her past isn't marred by tragedy, she joined the Strike Witches out of a sense of duty to ensure that no harm would ever come to her beloved Romagna. However, for all her lofty ideals she's still twelve years old and often acts childish or self-indulgent like a typical twelve-year-old. Her energetic personality masks the fact that she's quite lazy. She'll often spend time napping around the base only waking up to change where she naps. However, in the air, she displays a passion and talent for flying that nobody in the 501st can match. Her striker unit is based on the FIAT G-55 Centauro and her weapon is the Breda-SAFAT Machine Gun 12.7 mm. She is named after the World War II ace Franco Lucchini.

  • A-Cup Angst: Subverted; despite being the flattest member of the witches, Lucchini firmly believes that this is only due to her youth, and she has every hope that when she matures, she will grow large enough to rival Shirley.
  • Barrier Warrior: She takes this a step further and literally fights people with her barriers. Her stacked barriers are almost unbreakable as well.
  • Big Eater: She eats slightly more than the other witches and for her food is always a top priority.
  • Breast Expansion: In episode 7 of the Road to Berlin anime, she discovers a cursed idol that causes her breasts to grow at last. The curse then compels her to take up her usual groping habit with a vengeance, as every girl whom she gropes similarly has their breasts enlarge — and then they become obsessed with groping other girls and making their breasts bigger too, in a comedic parody of a Zombie Apocalypse.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Despite being flatchested herself, Lucchini firmly likes big breasts, and dearly hopes that she will grow up to be very busty herself.
  • Butt-Monkey: She tends to be the one whom bad things happen to. In one episode she spends most of it running away from everybody. In another, she accidentally breaks Shirley's Striker unit and receives a lump on the head when Minna finds out.
  • Cat Girl: While there are others with the cat motif, she has the personality to match. This includes her habit of sleeping in high places.
  • Child Soldier: She's twelve and has been serving for a while.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In Operation Victory Arrow, she's strongly against the Afrika Corps' plan to destroy Delos since it contains valuable Greek ruins.
  • Fastball Special: At the end of Strike Witches, Shirley throws her. Also, her signature move seems tailor-made for this.
  • Fearless Fool: She doesn't seem to fear anything (not even Shirley's driving) except Minna and Mio.
  • Genki Girl: She's full of energy, jumps around a lot, and speaks in a sing-songy voice.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair into twin tails.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Although she takes cat naps, not even the roar of airplane engines can rouse her while she's asleep.
  • Hypocritical Humor: She makes fun of Perrine's boobs, despite being the flattest of the witches herself, which is nothing unusual, since she's also the youngest.
  • Last-Name Basis: Oddly enough, practically no one ever calls her by her first name.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains features of the black panther whenever she uses magic.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: She likes to grope the boobs of her teammates, sometimes as a greeting ritual or just for fun...
  • Ramming Always Works: Her signature move is to stack several shields together and ram the target.
  • Small Girl, Big Gun: She's the smallest witch and she wields a gun meant for airplanes. Although it's not that much bigger than the other girls' guns, the size difference is more pronounced.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's also the youngest of the witches.

    Captain Charlotte Elwyn Yeager ("Shirley")

Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu (Japanese), Jamie Marchi, Katelyn Barr (Road to Berlinnote ) (English)Foreign VAs
"Shirley is a really kind person! She seems kind of slack, but I think she actually really looks after everyone. She's big-hearted and broad-minded... What? I'm not talking about her breasts! But... well... they sure did feel nice..."

Shirley is a mechanical enthusiast from the United States of Liberion. She is a thrill seeking speedster and her goal is to break the sound barrier. Before the war, she raced motorbikes and set a land speed record. When she joined the 501st she modified her Striker unit to help her with her goal of breaking the sound barrier. In addition to her obsession with speed she's also obsessed with cleanliness: even going so far as to have her personal bath shipped when she was transferred into the 501st. Her Striker Unit is based on the P-51 Mustang and her weapons of choice is the Browning Automatic Rifle M1918. She is named after American WWII ace Charles "Chuck" Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier in level flight.

  • Affectionate Nickname: She is called Shirley by her teammates.
  • Danger Deadpan: She has a calm demeanor and alerts others of potentially dangers situations without losing her temper. She even breaks the sound barrier in episode 5 of Strike Witches.
  • Drives Like Crazy: While not as destructive as most in the one scene she's shown driving, she drifts on mountainside dirt roads and leaps across chasms in a military supply truck. Francesca loves it, but Yoshika gets sick.
  • Fearless Fool: Which is probably why she's paired with Lucchini so often.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's strong, passionate, and outgoing, but she's only outspoken when dealing with certain people.
  • Hot-Blooded: She doesn't back down from any challenge even going so far as to charge a neuroi in an unarmed plane.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She takes on the features of a jack-rabbit; most likely a nod to her speed.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Other than the obvious one to Chuck Yeager, there's one to the photographer Bunny Yeager.
  • Parental Substitute: She's pretty much Luccini's mother.
  • Rank Up: Her initial rank in the 501st is Lieutenant. Eventually, she is promoted to Captain.
  • The Rival: She started a rivalry with Trude before Yoshika arrived.
  • Super-Speed: Her power lets her do anything faster. Her power plus the modifications she made to her striker unit allow her to break the sound barrier in flight.note
  • Shout-Out: She says the P-51 Mustang, the fighter that her striker unit is based on, is her all-purpose weapon platform of choice.
  • Wrench Wench: Before joining the witches she worked on motorcycles and airplanes, consequentially her striker unit is heavily modified. Even after joining the witches she spends her spare time in the machine shop and making further modifications to her striker unit.

    Captain Erica Hartmann
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erica_hartmann_clear.png
Voiced by: Sakura Nogawa (Japanese), Luci Christian (English)Foreign VAs
"I don't really understand Hartmann. Everyone says she's an excellent witch, and she is amazing even in small scaled battles, but in her everyday life she is... how should I put it... umm... sloppy?" —Yoshika

Erica is one of the "Double Aces" from Karlsland, having the second highest kill score in the world at just over 200. However, her skill in the air and on duty is in sharp contrast with her disorganized and careless nature when off duty. She is a close acquaintance of Gertrud and Minna having served with them long before the creation of the 501st although, unlike Minna and Gertrud, she spends most of her time sleeping and eating, only getting up to investigate oddities and fight neuroi. Her striker unit is based on the Messerschmitt Bf109G-6 and her weapon is the MG42. She is named after WWII ace Erich Hartmann, the highest scoring ace in history.

  • Blow You Away: Her power lets her create a vortex of air when she does a barrel roll. She calls this ability Sturm and it's powerful enough to blow holes through Neuroi.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Even more so than the rest of the 501st.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Remember the chocolate bar she received from Trude in Road to Berlin? Its bar wrapper comes in handy when she told Trude (verbally) that she's still alive. To fair for Trude though, she had no idea that the "Erica" she saw is actually a fake body.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: On the ground, she's a lazy disorganized failure of a soldier. In the air, she's skilled, disciplined, and one of the best aces in the world. Both are the real her but most people see the disorganized failure before they see the second greatest witch in the Karlsland air force.
  • Do a Barrel Roll: Her power is an offensive barrel roll she calls "Sturm".
  • Dumb Blond: Averted. The girl's smart enough to be one of the best fighters despite sleeping most of the time.
  • Faking the Dead: After being shot down by a highly maneuverable Neuroi in Road to Berlin and with her radio busted, Erica built a fake body to trick it into thinking she's dead. Unfortunately, this tactic almost bites Erica big time later when Trude had a Heroic BSoD after mistakenly seeing the fake body as the real deal, though Erica snapped her out of it by using a chocolate bar wrapper as a signal light.
  • Foil: Almost the complete opposite of Gertrud, to the latter's endless annoyance.
Gertrud: And you call yourself a Karlsland soldier?!
  • Genki Girl: When she's awake, she's cheerful.
  • Heavy Sleeper: She seriously spends most of the series asleep, only appearing to investigate major disturbances and participate in battles. She even sleeps through an alarm clock and having books thrown at her.
  • Hidden Depths: According to the 501st JOINT FIGHTER WING gag series and supplementary materials related to her background, her original dream had the Neuroi invasion not happened was to become a doctor, and she would occasionally spend her free time studying medicine whenever she was off-duty.
  • Historical Injoke:
    • Her sister is named Ursula, the name of Erich Hartmann's wife.
    • Her striker unit has the black tulip pattern also present on Erich Hartmann's aircraft.
    • The hubbub over her stealing Lucchini's underwear is based on Erich Hartmann accidentally taking Hitler's hat.
    • Like Erica, Erich also had a problem with discipline.
    • Her hairstyle is based on Erich's nickname "Bubi" (Erica's hair is in the Bubischnitt hairstyle)
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: In The Movie, this is the only possible explanation about how she's able to use her special attack, despite unable to even fly a moment ago.
  • Impact Silhouette: When she uses Sturm to ram Neuroi, she leaves behind a perfectly circular hole.
  • Informed Attribute: Yoshika claims Hartmann is just as bad a driver as Shirley, but none of the other members of the squadron know what she's talking about and when we see Hartmann actually behind the wheel she drives perfectly responsibly.
  • Jerkass Ball:
    • In the Strike Witches episode "Nice and Breezy", when Lucchini is accused of stealing the panties (something that Hartmann is responsible for) she happily lets Lucchini take the fall for it with no remorse whatsoever.
    • In the first episode of Operation Victory Arrow, she distrusts the new military stuff of her twin sister, Ursula, possibly as a result of Gertrud's nearly fatal incident with the flawed jet striker prototype.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Takes on the features of a Dachshund when she uses magic. However, unlike the other girls, she doesn't grow animal ears—the tips of her hair turn black instead.
  • Mildly Military: While the other girls are at least trying to act like soldiers, Erica doesn't. Interestingly enough her real life counterpart had disciplinary problems as well although nowhere near as bad as her.
  • Nice Girl: A cheerful, upbeat and friendly breath of fresh air who doesn't hold grudges and can get along with anybody.
  • Not a Morning Person: Friendlier than most though about staying asleep... though mention the possibility of having candy and she'll wake up instantaneously.
  • Power Fist: In The Movie, this is how she obliterate the Neuroi attacking her when she's out of guns. It looks and acts like Chidori & Rasengan: she actually has to board the Neuroi and punch it.
  • Ramming Always Works: Like Luccini she uses her magic to invoke this. Unlike Luccini she uses a vortex of wind for protection instead of a stack of shields.
  • Sweet Tooth: She wants sweets, they buy her an alarm clock instead.
  • Trash of the Titans: Her room has a ton of garbage lying around such as bottles and clothes. Even her bed is full of random trash.

    Major Gertrud Barkhorn ("Trude")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gertrud_barkhorn_clear.png
Voiced by: Mie Sonozaki (Japanese), Stephanie Sheh (English)Foreign VAs
"It feels like Barkhorn is always mad at me too. But well, compared to her, I'm still just an inexperienced little duckling, so I guess it's only natural." —Yoshika

Barkhorn is also one of the "Double Aces" of Karlsland. She holds the highest kill score over 250. She is disciplined and efficient: a very stereotypical German military personality. However, to her friends Minna and Erica, whom she has known for a long time, she's slightly more open and friendly although she often yells at Erica for lacking discipline. She cares deeply about her little sister Christiane, who was injured in a Neuroi attack on their homeland. Her striker unit is based on the Focke-Wulf Fw190D-9 and her weapons are two MG42 machine guns with dual drum magazines. She is named after WWII ace Gerhard Barkhorn, the second highest scoring ace in history.

  • Action Girl: Although every witch is technically one, her love of fighting coupled with her skill in the air means she takes the prize.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She is called "Trude" by everyone around her.
  • The Big Girl: Physically the most powerful witch with her powers giving herself a great degree of Super-Strength. She duel wields machine guns and is capable of attacking Neuroi hand-to-hand if necessary. She gets most of her kills by simply bludgeoning and overpowering the Neuroi as opposed to the more skilled Hartmann.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Towards Yoshika after she rescues her in "Thanks". The reason is because Yoshika looks like her sister, Chris. In the movie, the moment she hears that the then depowered Yoshika could be in the crosshairs of danger, she swiftly gears herself up to sortie despite being reluctant to do so prior.
  • Blood Knight: Not only is she one of the best witches, she deeply enjoys her job.
  • Broken Bird: She is deeply affected by her sister's injury to the point of keeping her distance from Yoshika because she resembles Chris and eventually being Driven to Suicide. She comes out of it by the end of "Thanks".
  • Butt-Monkey: Due to her role as the team disciplinarian, she is the most common target of pranks from Hartmann, Yeager, and Lucchini.
  • Death Seeker: Barkhorn is nearly Driven to Suicide fighting the Neuroi following Karlsland's attack. In "Thanks", Yoshika and Minna make her realize how stupid her actions are after Barkhorn is shot down.
  • Doomed Hometown: Her home country of Karlsland was destroyed by the Neuroi.
  • Dual Wielding: When she decides to use her guns as clubs instead of guns.
  • Dub Personality Change: Most of her dialogue in the English dub doesn't sound like a disciplined Karlsland soldier, given she is voiced by Stephanie Sheh.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her inability to protect Karlsland from the Neuroi's invasion, along with her sister's injury, serve as a major problem for her. In the Strike Witches episode "Thanks", this is what almost gets her killed during the Neuroi attack. She gets better later on.
  • Guns Akimbo: Her normal battle loadout is two MG42 machine guns.
  • Happily Failed Suicide: She attempts to commit suicide in the second half of "Thanks" due to her depression stemming from Chris's injury. Fortunately, Yoshika rescues her.
  • Heartbroken Badass: She may be one of the most badass aces in the Karlsland Air Force along with Erica, but she was greatly affected by her sister's injury.
  • Heroic Second Wind: She undergoes one by the end of "Thanks" when Yoshika heals her and snaps her out of her Heroic BSoD.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Trude initially feels she doesn't deserve to live, given her failure to protect Karlsland and her sister from the Neuroi invasion.
  • Hypocrite: Despite all her talk about being a disciplined Karlsland soldier, Barkhorn is frequently emotionally compromised when the situation doesn't go as planned. Ironically, in contrast to their personalities back at base, it is Hartmann that remains cool, collected, and professional when actually out on a mission.
  • Idiot Ball: In "Thanks", despite being an ace in Karlsland, Barkhorn wasn't smart enough to realize that charging recklessly and attacking the Neuroi by herself is a very bad idea; she learns her lesson the hard way. This causes Yoshika and Minna to call her out on this and also have a Heroic Second Wind.
  • Incest Subtext: With Chris. The rest of the squadron outright accuse her of it, and she does little to disuade them.
  • It's All My Fault: Trude laments that she was unable to protect her sister and her homeland, even knowing this wasn't her fault. Her Heroic BSoD worsened when Yoshika joins the Strike Witches, since she looks like her sister, to the point that she's Driven to Suicide. She gets better after the end of "Thanks".
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: In "Thanks", Barkhorn tells Yoshika to leave her behind after the former gets shot down. On the other hand, Yoshika tells her No One Gets Left Behind.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Although she can be a jerk at times, Barkhorn deeply cares about her homeland, her sister and her squadmates.
  • The Lancer: She takes over this role in Road to Berlin after Sakamoto is forced to retire as a witch.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: In the Strike Witches episode "Thanks", she rushes in to gun down the Neuroi against Minna's orders, only to get shot down for her troubles.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She takes on the features of a German Wirehaired Pointer when she changes.
  • Living Emotional Crutch:
  • My Greatest Failure: She wasn't able to rescue her sister, Chris, from a Neuroi attack in Karlsland.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Half her power seems to be her ability to strengthen objects allowing her to use her machine guns as clubs and not be crushed by a giant steel girder.
  • Pistol-Whipping: When she mixes it up toe to fin with the neuroi she sometimes uses her guns as clubs.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Or in her case, "Proud Warrior Race Lady". And therefore constantly exasperated by Erica's laid back and informal attitude, seeing them as "a disgrace to the Karsland military."
  • Rank Up: In the Strike Witches series, she initially holds the rank of Captain. By the time of Road to Berlin, she's promoted to Major.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Since Yoshika resembles Christiane, Gertrud initially keeps her distance from the former, because she doesn't want to see Yoshika injured.
  • Shoo the Dog: She attempts to have Yoshika leave her behind in the second half of "Thanks". Yoshika, being Yoshika, refuses to let her die.
  • Spell My Name With An S: It's officially "Gertrud", but her name is sometimes spelled "Gertrude".
  • Super-Strength: The other half of her power is strength exceeding the already boosted strength of most witches.
  • That Woman Is Dead: At the end of the first half of "Thanks", Barkhorn tells Minna that the sister Chris once knew is dead and that she belongs to the Strike Witches. She eventually gets over it by the end of the episode's second half.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Following her disastrous first encounter with a highly maneuverable Neuroi who shot down Erika and outclassed Shirley in Road to Berlin, Trude responds by building up her body through shedding her weight for extra mobility while retaining her speed.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: Trude impulsively charges to attack the Neuroi during their battle in the Strike Witches episode "Thanks", resulting in her being seriously wounded.
  • Tsundere: She becomes this after Yoshika rescues her from certain death. She denies, but deeply cares for Yoshika. Lampshaded by Erica several times.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Trude genuinely believes that by dying in battle.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: She and Minna are turning 20 soon in Road to Berlin, and the former can't afford to waste anymore time.

    Lieutenant Aleksandra Vladimirovna Litvyak ("Sanya")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sanya_litvyak_clear.png
Voiced by: Mai Kadowaki (Japanese), Jessica Foster note  (English)Foreign VAs
"Sanya is a really kind girl! She's a little shy and quiet, but she's good at singing, and I think it's really great how she always does her best for all of us during the nights!" —Yoshika

The daughter of pianist Volodya Litvyak and Anna Litvyak, Aleksandra, or Sanya as she prefers to be called, is a shy Orussian witch in the 501st that often handles night patrol duties alone. Described as "nocturnal" she doesn't have a lot of contact with the other members of the 501st, but is essential for the unit's safety. Because of her lack of contact with the rest of the squad, she is only close to Eila and Erica although her compassionate and submissive personality means she's kind and accepting of everybody in the 501st. Volodya taught Sanya how to play the piano and sing. He even wrote a song for her entitled "Sanya's Song". When the Neuroi invaded Orussia, Sanya was separated from her father but maintains hope that he's still alive in Orussia and someday they'll be reunited. To remind herself, she often hums the song her father composed for her. Unlike the other girls, most of whom wield machine guns, she uses a rocket launcher called the Fliegerhammer which is based on the Fliegerfaust, a contemporary German anti-aircraft rocket launcher and M202 FLASH. In season one her striker unit is based on the MiG60 a fictional fighter combining features of the MiG-1, MiG-3, and Yak-1: in Strike Witches 2 her striker unit is based on the Yak-9. She is named after WWII ace Lydia Litvyak, one of just two female aces in real life.

  • Ascended Extra: The Brave Witches OVA centers around Eila and Sanya's perspectives and interactions with the 502nd and each other.
  • Demoted to Extra: Sanya appears as a prominent character in the Strike Witches TV series and movie, but she gets a minor appearance along with Eila in episodes 7, 11, and 12 of Brave Witches as well as episode 7 of Luminous Witches.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Averted, she is the only one not based on a male ace.
  • Doomed Hometown: According to Minna in Road to Berlin, Orussia fell into the Neuroi's hands a few years ago, which is mainly the reason why Sanya treats her attempt to eliminate the Neuroi guarding Kiel as Serious Business.
  • Friendly Sniper: In essence. Her rocket launcher weapon means that she tends to attack from long range.
  • Enemy-Detecting Radar: This is her unique ability.
    • Whats more, the Magical Radar is established as a more modern innovation of magic to detect Neuroi and is commonly used by Night Witches like Sanya.
  • Have We Met Yet?: Just like Yoshika above in the World Witches: United Front game, both Sanya and Eila (who came together) hail from September of 1944 when they're transported into the world of United Front, so both are understandably confused when the 502nd members, who come from March of 1945, express familiarity with them as the duo have yet to meet their squadron until the tail-end of 1944.
  • Heavy Sleeper: A Justified example, considering she's up all night patrolling.
  • Hidden Depths: When she overheard Minna and Trude's conversation over taking back Berlin and their age limit in Road to Berlin, the usually reserved Sanya is revealed to be a capable field leader when the situation calls for it.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Anyone familiar with the physics of flight or shooters will tell you how difficult it is to hit a moving target with a slow-moving projectile from long range.
  • I Will Find You: She was separated from her parents when the Neuroi invaded Orussia. One of her main motivations in the series is to find their whereabouts and reunite with them, as she believes that they're still alive somewhere out there. The Luminous Witches series reveals that her hopes weren't unfounded, as they're still very much alive and waiting for their daughter to find them as well.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: One of the more overt example of the 501st as Sanya is very feminine in presentation and demeanor and also hold a deal of romantic feelings towards Eila. Much like Eila however, both girls are much like a young boyfriend and girlfriend who cannot easily convey their feelings for each other.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains the features of a black cat when she uses her magic.
  • The Load: During day missions she sometimes relies on Eila to move her around because she's practically dead on her feet.
  • Loners Are Freaks: She's afraid that her isolation will make other people perceive her this way.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: While she's limited to nine dumbfire rockets, she never seems to fire only one, until episode 11 of Strike Witches 2 where she just fired one rocket and it created a domino effect on the Neuroi. She even lampshades it herself.
  • Mission Control: She can also use her power to broadcast information to witches (including spatial information and orders) as well as rebroadcast radio transmissions.
  • Mundane Utility: She uses her radar powers to listen to the radio at night.
  • Nice Girl: Gives even Yoshika a run for her money in the niceness department. She's a very generous and polite person.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Removing Eila from the fog-clearing operation due to trust issues in Road to Berlin would've been a guaranteed death wish if it weren't for the latter's intuition.
  • Parental Abandonment: She was separated from her father when the Neuroi invaded.
  • The Quiet One: She rarely talks, although she's quick to scold Eila when she's being too malicious.
  • Shrinking Violet: She is a fairly shy girl.
  • Small Girl, Big Gun: Her FliegerHummer is almost bigger than she is.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She inherited her mother's facial features while she has her father's hair and eye color, as seen when they appear in Luminous Witches.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In Road to Berlin. She knows that Minna and Gertrud are soon going to lose their powers and that they are under tremendous time pressure to liberate Berlin before that happens. As a result of the stress and time crunch, she's a lot less patient than normal and not in the mood to put up with Eila's usual antics.
  • Vapor Wear: Averted. She is indeed wearing something underneath those black tights, as can be seen when she undresses to go to bed.

    Lieutenant Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen ("Illu")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eila_juutilainer_clear.png
Voiced by: Ayuru Ohashi note  (Japanese), Caitlin Glass (English)Foreign VAs
"Eila is quite mysterious. But at least I've come to understand that she cares a lot about Sanya. Seems like she almost never has used her protective shield during battles since she can predict the enemy's attacks. According to herself, she does it without thinking, “by intuition”, but... Isn't it amazing?" — Yoshika

Eila is the top ace of the Suomus witch corps where she held the rank of captain (the rank indicated by the three roses on her collar). She is an expert at reading people, allowing her to predict her companions' actions and outwit her enemies. Her ability to read people combined with her ability to see the future means that in the air she is nearly untouchable. She is so used to her mastery of evasion that she relies exclusively on dodging and has difficulty raising a shield. Her striker unit is based on the Messerschmitt Bf109G-2 and her weapon of choice is the Suomi KP/31 Sub-Machine Gun. She is named after the Finnish WWII ace Eino Ilmari Juutilainen the highest scoring non-German ace in history.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Girl: She's less extreme but relationships are definitely not her specialty. She just can't resist throwing insults into everything she says to anyone (except Sanya). Finns are stereotypically perceived as aloof and casually rude people by their neighbors, and Eila seems to follow those tropes pretty closely.
  • Ascended Extra: The Brave Witches OVA centers around Eila and Sanya's perspectives and interactions with the 502nd and each other.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Showed up just in time to defend Sanya's team in Road to Berlin after figuring out that a second Neuroi (which Sanya can't even detect) is hiding in the fog.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: In spite of her doing perverted things around her squad mates, she never does it towards Sanya.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Very protective of Sanya.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: She can see three seconds into the future and uses this to her advantage in combat.
  • Declaration of Protection: Gives a big one to Sanya in Strike Witches 2.
    Eila: I'LL PROTECT SANYAAAAAAA!!
  • Deadpan Snarker: She gets a few moments of this in episode 6 of Strike Witches.
  • Death Glare: Delivers a seething close up one to Yoshika in Strike Witches 2 when the latter was chosen to protect Sanya for the rocket launch operation over herself.
  • Demoted to Extra: Eila gets a minor appearance along with Sanya in episode 7, 11, and 12 of Brave Witches, as well as in episode 7 of Luminous Witches.
  • Dodge the Bullet: As a part of training, she dodges live anti-tank rounds fired by a sniper.
    • Averted later that episode when Sanya angrily throws a pillow at her and she's too shocked to dodge it.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: In episode 7 of Strike Witches 2, she tried to pull off Sanya's panties while she was sleeping, suspecting the bug neuroi was under her panties. Obviously, Sanya wakes up, with predictable results.
  • Fragile Speedster: The fact that she is rarely prepared to raise a shield means a stray Neuroi beam would toast her. Fortunately, she is really good at dodging.
  • High-Speed Missile Dodge: Or in her case, "High Speed Laser Dodge." She uses her ability to see several seconds into the future to dodge lasers.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Her reliance on dodging backfires spectacularly in Strike Witches 2.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Since she knows where the enemies will be and where her shots will go, she doesn't even have to look to hit with perfect accuracy.
  • In-Series Nickname: Illu.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Her abilities let her dodge every attack coming her way and hit the enemy with uncanny accuracy.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She takes on the features of a black fox when she uses magic.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: She's almost as bad as Lucchini.
Sanya: Eila is very dear to me. We’re always together... because that’s just the way it is. I didn’t even notice it until people around me told me. But I don’t like her habit of touching other girl’s bodies like she does! That’s not good, Eila! You never do those kinds of things to me... Why? Just blushing won’t help me understand...
  • Mysterious Waif: Almost every character notes her odd behavior and mysterious air, even the ones that don't normally comment on character disposition. Also, she has the least backstory development of the entire cast, all we really know about her is that she's from Suomus and loves Sanya. Her background prior to joining the 501st is fleshed out more in supplementary materials for the anime, however.
  • Not What It Looks Like: When she pull off Sanya's panties while she is sleeping and Sanya wake up with an angry face.
  • Psychic Powers: Her power is the ability to see several seconds into the future, although her accuracy with Tarot cards is not nearly as good.
  • Rank Up: In Strike Witches, she holds the rank of Ensign. By the time of the movie, she's promoted to Lieutenant.
  • Satellite Character: Eila's main interest is Sanya, even when she isn't present (in fact in many cases, specially when she isn't present), her motivations beyond that aren't really known.
  • Smug Super: She's more than happy to rub the fact in that she doesn't need shields, which are critical to every other witch.
  • Tarot Motifs: She keeps a tarot deck in one of her belt pouches and she occasionally reads people fortunes.
  • Tomboy: Aside from using the gender-neutral "watashi" to refer to herself, Ella exclusively uses masculine vocabularies and syntaxes in the Japanese version.
  • Tsundere: She often tries to pass off her presence at several engagements as just chance, much like a tsundere would her acts of kindness. No one buys it, though.
    • In the end of Strike Witches when the 501st JFW is dissolved, she tries to deny that she returned to the base because of Yoshika. Sanya reveals her true intentions.
  • Waif Prophet: She's a mysterious little girl and her powers revolve around reading the future.
  • Wingman: In combat, she takes this role more often than not.

    Ensign Shizuka Hattori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara5_1.png
Voiced by: Aya Uchida (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (English)

A Fusoan native, Shizuka is a newer member of the Witches who idolizes Yoshika. Without much knowledge of war, she sticks strictly to the rules due to her being raised by a military family. She is given the role of accompanying Yoshika in her journey through Europe but is very shocked and dismayed at Yoshika's demeanor which seemingly is disgraceful for her rank. This comes to a head when she briefly disagrees with Yoshika's desire to help everyone she can and break the rules if absolutely necessary. Eventually, she mellows out considerably upon meeting the rest of the 501st. Her ace archetype is Kazushi "Popo" Uto.

  • Apologizes a Lot: In The Movie, Shizuka frequently apologizes to Yoshika initially, and again at Perrine's chateau.
  • Ascended Fangirl: She eventually gets to be part of the 501st herself come Road to Berlin. She's especially ecstatic that she can finally get the opportunity to fly together with her idol, Yoshika.
  • By-the-Book Cop: She is very clear on following orders and rules due to her being raised as a Military Brat. Well, at least until she learns from Perrine about what Yoshika really is.
  • Character Development: She went from being a New Meat By-the-Book Cop to picking up Yoshika's habit of breaking the rules for the greater good at the end of Road to Berlin.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. Some scenes in Episode 3 of Road to Berlin imply that Shizuka is jealous of Lynne's relationship with Yoshika, though she never acts on these feelings aside from pouting whenever Yoshika and Lynne have a moment together.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Upon meeting Yoshika, she is shocked by her idol's disregard for military rules if she needs to, as well as her un-officer-like behavior (read: cooking dinner and swabbing the deck). Over the course of the film, Shizuka meets the rest of the 501st and is convinced to lighten up, especially after meeting Perrine.
  • Deuteragonist: Takes over Mio's role in the story during the events of Road to Berlin.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: At first, she finds it hard to stomach the fact that Yoshika is willing to disobey military rules so she can bring out positive results.
  • Fangirl: She is a fan of the 501st witches, particularly Yoshika.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She idolizes Yoshika. While she was initially put off by Yoshika's disregard for military rules during the movie, she eventually comes around to accept her for how she is by the end of it, and goes right back to fully admiring her in Road to Berlin.
  • Heroic BSoD: She gets hit with this between Episodes 10 and 11 of Road to Berlin after finding out that Yoshika's magic reserves have been completely spent and won't participate in Operation Southwind (at least for the next ten days if Yoshika gets enough rest, according to the doctor).
  • It's All My Fault: Shizuka blamed herself for her failed attempt to stop the Neuroi's attack on Kiel during the events of Road to Berlin, forcing Yoshika to do the deed instead. The next time she meets up with Yoshika in the following episode, she breaks down in tears after being told by Mio about the classified information that musn't be known to Yoshika.
  • Lethal Chef: Shizuka's first attempt at cooking miso soup didn't go that well in Gallia.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Takes the ears and tail of a Shikoku dog when using magic.
  • Military Brat: Shizuka's family served in the Fuso military.
  • Naïve Newcomer: In The Movie, Shizuka is utterly dismayed by Yoshika's disregard for military rules as well as how the 501st works. She eventually loses her naivety by the end and joins the 501st in Road to Berlin.
  • New Meat: In her first year at the Fuso Naval Academy. Her first combat sortie consists of engaging a Neuroi alone during the second half of the film. She does remarkably well until she gets shot down.
  • Rank Up: In the film, Shizuka holds the rank of Sergeant. By the time of Road to Berlin, she's promoted to Ensign.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: She comes to respect Yoshika for what she is towards the end of the film.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: She disobeys Mio's orders in the finale of Road to Berlin to defend Yoshika from the Neuroi swarm, though she ends up being taken out of the fight after being struck in the gut as a result.
  • Sixth Ranger: As of Road to Berlin, Shizuka joins the 501st as Mio's replacement.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: In the second half of The Movie, she becomes conflicted with obeying orders or breaking them like Yoshika. In the end, she sides with Yoshika after meeting the rest of the 501st.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: After spending part of the movie conflicted with Yoshika's mentality, her faith in Yoshika is restored towards the end of the film.
  • Younger Than They Look: She looks older or at least around Yoshika's age, but she's actually two years her junior and is only 14 years old upon meeting 16-year old Yoshika. In fact, she and Lucchini share the same birth year, being only a few months older than the latter. Even Yoshika was mildly surprised when Shizuka reveals her age to her.

Brave Witches

The 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, also known as the "Brave Witches", are based in Petersburg, Orussia. Led by Major Gundula Rall, they are nicknamed the "Breaker Witches" due to their penchant for damaging and destroying striker units.

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/502.png

  • Captain Crash: They are infamous due to the amount of Striker Units they have destroyed in action, though most of them can be attributed to the "Crusher Trio" of Krupinski, Kanno and Nipa.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: All of the 502nd, sans Hikari, appear in The Movie, which was produced years before Brave Witches. Nipa and Sasha also appear in episode 3 of Operation Victory Arrow.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Anyone who has seen the movie will know that the 502nd JFW will survive the events of Brave Witches and Operation Victory Arrow.
  • Multinational Team: Unlike the Strike Witches, though, the countries where they come from is a little bit limited (in particular, three witches from Fuso/Japan as well as three from Karlsland/Germany).
    • Gallia (France): Georgette
    • Fuso (Japan): Hikari, Sadako, Naoe
    • Karsland (Germany): Rall, Rossmann, Krupinski
    • Orussia (Russia): Sasha
    • Suomus (Finland): Nipa
  • Seiza Squirm: The team's preferred form of punishment for misbehaving is to sit in a kneeled position. The reasoning for this was due to a time when Sadako tried to teach Sasha seiza as a meditation technique, but she considered it being pure torture.
  • The Voiceless: A Justified example. Aside from Sasha and Nipa, the 502nd JFW witches don't speak in The Movie due to it being made long before they were cast.

    Lieutenant Hikari Karibuchi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hikari_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Ai Kakuma (Japanese), Madeleine Morris (English)

Hikari Karibuchi is an aspiring Witch from Sasebo, Fuso. Looking up to her older sister Takami, she enrolled in Sasebo Aviation Preparatory School to hopefully one day to become a great Witch like her sister. While not a particularly skillful one, Hikari possesses a lot of stamina. When her school got an order to send Witches to fight in the war, she Jumped at the Call and was eventually picked to go to Suomus to be on the back lines. However, due to an accident during her and her sister's trip to Europe, she took her sister's place on being part of the Brave Witches. She inherits her sister's experimental Shiden Model-4 Striker Unit nicknamed "Chidori" and uses a Type 99 13mm machine gun. She is named after the younger sister of Takashi Oshibuchi.

  • Awesome, but Impractical: Contact Eye is deemed as such early on in her career as while being able to detect Neuroi's cores is a valuable skill, the fact that she has to touch one to activate the ability is seen as too big of a risk for her to use actively. It becomes more practical as her skills develop, though.
  • Be Yourself: Episode 4 has it drilled into her that she cannot be like Takami - she needs to play to her own strengths.
  • Big Sister Worship: She looks up to Takami and wants to be just like her.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Her beginnings as a Witch are not pretty. She has really low grades from school, technically failed her test to be on the front lines but was selected for saving Miya, doesn't have enough magic to properly operate Chidori and is seen as a hindrance by most of Brave Witches.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Unlike the pacifistic Yoshika who would prefer not to fight unless necessary and only went along with Mio to find her father, Hikari has aspired to be a great Witch like her big sister and Jumped at the Call when it was presented to be on the front lines. However, while Yoshika showed her having potential in her first flight, Hikari shows a lot of problems in the beginning of her journey even if she has trained to be a Witch for around a year.
  • Demoted to Extra: While she's a major character in Brave Witches, she gets a minor appearance in Road to Berlin along with Gundula.
  • Determinator: She refuses to lose her ambitions and goals, as shown during her training in Episode 4. Not even Kanno's insults slow her down.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Woman!: In episode 9, she tells Kanno to get a grip when the latter feels that their mission to protect their supplies has failed.
  • Inept Mage: Due of her low mana pool, she has hard time working as a Witch initially. It is until Rossmann realizes that she can focus her magic powers onto a single task at a time that Hikari starts getting good at fighting.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains squirrel traits when using magic.
  • Little Sister Heroine: Is Takami's younger sister and the protagonist of Brave Witches.
  • Little Useless Gun: Her FP-45 Liberator pistol that she carries as a good luck charm.
  • Magical Eye: She has a magic ability called Contact Eye, which allows her to see the core of a Neuroi if she touches the Neuroi in question.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She becomes friends with Kanno after the latter gets over her envy in episode 4.

    Lieutenant Naoe Kanno ("Nao")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kanno_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Rie Murakawa (Japanese), Mikaela Krantz (English)

Naoe Kanno is a short but strong-headed Fusoan Witch and a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. When she was young, she was a really obedient child with a keen sense of literature. But when she started to train to become a Witch, she started adopting a more aggressive personality, adopting a fighting style of fighting until you simply can't fight anymore. While this does make her undertake actions which might cause her to crash often, she still proves to be a force to be reckoned with. Her Striker Unit is based on the Yamanishi Shiden Model 21 and she uses a Type 99 13mm machine gun. She is named after the Japanese pilot Naoshi Kanno.

  • Badass Bookworm: She studied literature before she became a pilot.
  • Dislikes the New Guy: A gender-swapped variation. Kanno dislikes Hikari upon joining the 502nd JFW. She eventually loosens up on her towards the end of the fourth episode.
  • Determinator: She refuses to lose against the Neuroi so much that she gets aggressive and fights until she becomes exhausted.
  • Full-Contact Magic: The application of her special magic ability is to compress her shield to the size where she can outright punch through Neuroi.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She envies Hikari when she enters the 502nd.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Kanno often goes from calm to extremely angry with minimal provocation and usually deals with it by attacking everything in her immediate area.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Nao".
  • Irrational Hatred: Kanno's initially resentful of Hikari because Kanno was unable to help Takami. Hikari was in no position to fight, especially when the only Striker Unit she had was a training model so her helping Takami to defend against the Neuroi was out of the question. She gets over this resentment towards the end of episode 4.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She may be a jerk to Hikari at first, but she is a very generous person overall.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She always charges into battle against Neurois and gets her Striker Unit trashed in the process.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains traits from a bulldog when using magic.
  • My Greatest Failure: She wasn't able to rescue Takami during their trip to Europe.
  • The Napoleon: She is one of shortest members of the team, and is also the most aggressive of everyone.
  • Otaku: For Gallian literature.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She's the shortest member of the team, but she can still kick ass when she needs to.
  • Rank Up: When she's first introduced, she holds the rank of Ensign. Eventually, she's promoted to Lieutenant.
  • The Resenter: When Kanno first meets Hikari, she doesn't bother to hide how resentful she is towards the latter
  • Tomboy: If the way she speaks doesn't prove it, the way she acts certainly will.
  • Tsundere: Even after she doesn't envy Hikari anymore, she still acts rather harsh when she is brought up, even if she cares for her. Well, until "Break Witches" at least.
  • Use Your Head: After Hikari snaps Kanno out of her funk in episode 9, the latter headbutts Hikari and agrees to help destroy the Neuroi.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She becomes friends with Hikari over time, which eventually culminates in Kanno helping the latter destroy the Neuroi in "Break Witches".

Master Sergeant Nikka Edvardine Katajainen ("Nipa")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nippa_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Natsumi Takamori (Japanese), Krystal LaPorte (English)

Nikka Edvardine "Nipa" Katajainen is a member of the Suomus Air Force and is part of the same squadron as her friend Eila. She is a bit of a tomboy and a bit guileless at times. She is known for her really bad luck which has led to her crashing numerous Striker Units in the past to the point where she is pulled out of the front-lines to operate on the base. That being said, she still has the numbers to prove that she is ace material and her accidents haven't done harm to anyone else. Her Striker Unit is based on Messerschmitt BF109K-4 and she uses an MG42 machine gun. She is named after the Finnish pilot Nils Edward Katajainen, who was also nicknamed "Nipa" and was known for crashing multiple crafts but surviving with minimal injuries.

  • Born Unlucky: Compared to Kanno and Krupinski, her reputation of being in the Crusher Trio is out or complete lack of luck. in The Movie, she was struck down by lightning out of nowhere, for example.
  • Boob-Based Gag: Her large bosom is often used for gags. For example, at one point, she hangs from a tree branch using nothing but her boobs after she crashes yet another Striker Unit. Luckily, as a witch, she's quite durable and she specifically has a Healing Factor, so she doesn't mind the discomfort. She actually manages to fall asleep there until Hikari finds her. On the other hand, they won't stay still during the team's morning exercises, which slows her down.
  • Butt-Monkey: Eila enjoys making a fool out of her, not to mention the fact that she tends to crash her Striker a lot, much to Sasha's dismay
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: On one hand, she is the unluckiest member of the team, constantly getting into crashes. On the other hand, she has hyper-regenerative abilities which allow her to heal almost any injury she receives in an instant.
  • Identical Stranger: Side-material gives her one in Hanna Wind, the two physically differing only in eye color (Hanna's are green), familiar (Eurasian eagle-owl), and breast size (Hanna's are smaller). Hanna has apparently even been mistaken for Nipa on one occasion (which Hanna just rolled with).
  • In-Series Nickname: Aside from "Nipa", she's also called "Jinxed" Katajainen and "Crasher O'Hare the Second", due to her rivaling Katharine O'Hare of the 507th in terms of crashing Striker Units.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Gains snow weasel traits when using magic.
  • Tomboy: She has a mannish appearance and has rather unladylike mannerisms. She also used to be something if a delinquent, but her friends got her out of that phrase.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Is this with Sasha and to a certain extent Eila.
  • Walking Techbane: Whereas the other two members of the "Crasher Trio" are as such because they either get too close to the enemy for their own good (Kanno) or lose sight of where enemy fire is coming from and/or overtax their unit (Waltrud), a lot of Nipa's crashes are mostly because her Strikers just stop working for no reason other than she being the one piloting them.

    Captain Aleksandra Ivanovna Pokryshkin ("Sasha")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sasha_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Yumi Hara (Japanese), Monica Rial (English)

Aleksandra Ivanovna "Sasha" Pokryshkin is Orussia's greatest ace. Her engineer father made her get familiar with mechanics early on in her life to the point where she is said to have a "mecha fetish". Aside from being the combat officer of Brave Witches, she is also an engineer and a combat instructor due to her achievements in the military. That being the case, she is a perfectionist and structured, causing her to clash with some of her teammates and gets headaches for the amount of Striker Units she needs to fix. Her Striker Unit is a MiG-60 like with Sanya but repainted brown, and she uses a DP28 light machine gun. She is named after Alexander Ivanovich Pokryshkin, a Russian ace who was called "Engineer" in his youth.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: While Sasha might be extremely harsh to Nipa due to her crashing her Striker Unit constantly, she does really care for her well-being and is harsh because she feels like she has to.
  • Catchphrase: "On your knees!"
  • The Chains of Commanding: As second-in-command and field leader of the Brave Witches, she's often forced into making tough decisions that she very clearly does not enjoy doing. In particular, she really hates having to punish her lower ranking friends for rules violations.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Sasha".
  • The Lancer: She is the combat commander of the Brave Witches.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gets traits from a polar bear when using magic.
  • One-Steve Limit: Subverted, despite having different nicknames to differentiate them, she shares her full first name with fellow Orussian Witch, Sanya V. Litvyak.
  • Otaku: She's a huge fan of machines, to the point she is said to have a mecha fetish.
  • Photographic Memory: Her inherent magic is called Image Memorization, which allows her to memorize practically anything and recall it even years after printing it into her memory. She particularly uses this in regards to the blueprints to the wing's Striker Units to easily tell what needs fixing.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: While visiting her grandma's home in Petersburg during her childhood, she awoke to her magic when she tried stopping a runaway car from running her over. Her discovering she was a Witch shocked her to the point where she locked her memories of visiting Petersburg away for several years.
  • Wrench Wench: She is the mechanic of the team, and has had a fascination with machinery even since she was young.

    Lieutenant Waltrud Krupinski ("Countess")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krupinski_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Kayo Ishida (Japanese), Felecia Angelle (English)

Waltrud Krupinski is one of Karlsland's veteran aces. A self-claimed "Countess", she is a hard-drinking hedonist and womanizer, but generally easygoing. She has a tendency to discard personal safety to line up her attacks, causing her to get into many crashes. Even so, she has a fairly lengthy military history and has the skills to be considered one of the top aces of Karsland. Her Striker Unit is based on Messerschmitt BF109G2 and she uses an StG-44 assault rifle. Her namesake is the German pilot Walter Krupinski.

  • Butch Lesbian: She is the most manly of the witches, and also the most blatant womanizer.
  • Fake Aristocrat: Rossmann is always quick to point out that Krupinsky is not actually a real Countess.
  • Handsome Lech: Is as beautiful as she is lecherous.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: When she's not pursuing other girls, her other favorite pasttime is getting plastered. She had to participate in a mission completely hungover on at least one occasion. One she was supposed to be in command of at that.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Countess", though she does tend to get called "Fake Countess" at times. She is also called "Earl".
  • The Lad-ette: A hard drinker and blatant womanizer, she comes across as far more masculine than the other witches.
  • Lethal Chef: When Sadako goes missing in Episode 5, she takes up the role in cooking for everyone else still in the place. She ends up cooking some sort of purple soup made with caviar what makes almost everyone puke besides Rall, though she doesn't have high opinions on the result.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Some of her antics comes from her desire to be with particularly cute girls. For example, she was motivated to go to a mission when she was shown a picture of the Britannian witch escorting the fleet and wanted to meet her.
  • Really Gets Around: She targets a new girl practically every episode. Sometimes more than one.
  • Super Mode: Her unique magic skill "Magic Boost" seems to allow her to overclock her Striker Unit to allow her to move faster, albeit the Unit can only last so long before acting up.

    Master Sergeant Edytha Rossmann
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rossmann_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Hiromi Igarashi (Japanese), Jill Harris (English)

A veteran Karlslandian Witch, Edytha is a bit of an oddity for one from Karlsland due to her low body count. She suffered a serious illness when she was young which halted her growth. Because of her frail body, she uses a really strategic fighting style which involves making a single decisive blow on the enemy and following with a quick escape, which has granted the status as an ace fighter, though one with a rather low kill-count compared to other Karlsland aces, and a highly-valued instructor. She spends most of her time being a teacher to upcoming Witches, which have included some of the world's top aces like Erica Hartmann. Her Strike Unit is based on Messerschmitt BF109G2 and her weapons include MG42 machine gun and Fliegerhammer rocket launcher. Her namesake is the German pilot Edmund Roßmann.

  • Asian Fox Spirit: A What If? idea by fans is that her true guardian animal is a kitsune, but due to her falling ill, it couldn't develop completely. Apparently Fumikane believes the same.
  • Badass Teacher: She teaches witches from time to time, and is able to whoop their asses at once should they ever cross her.
  • Cunning Like a Fox: Her familiar is a fox and since her body can't handle high-speed dogfighting, she had to develop a fighting style that focuses on decisive blows and quick escapes.
  • Delicate and Sickly: She has a fragile body resulting from an illness since childhood.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: She can be tough when she is training witches, though she clearly cares about them.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She is an easily approachable person. And yet, she has no qualms with putting witches through hard situations to get them to learn quickly.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains traits from a red fox while using magic.
  • In-Series Nickname: Paula.
  • Older Than She Looks: Even though she is the oldest member of the Brave Witches, she is also one of the shortest. That is because she became seriously ill in her youth, halting her growth.
  • Stern Teacher: She may be the Brave Witches's resident Drill Sergeant Nasty, but she does care for them, and does wish that they will surpass her one day.
  • Training from Hell: She makes Hikari undergo one of these, making her climb a pillar to retrieve a hat from the top using her magic in one week. Hikari eventually succeeds on the last day.

    Major Gundula Rall
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gundula_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Rina Sato (Japanese), Rachel Robinson (English)

The leader of the Brave Witches, Gundula Rall is the third-greatest Witch in the world. She acts like a brash and frank older sister, but she isn't overly serious. During the evacuation of her native Karlsland, however, she was hit when she couldn't focus, which led to her back being fractured. She went through extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation to get back in shape, but she still needs to wear a corset with magically-woven fibers to prevent the old injuries from flaring up in combat. Her Striker Unit is based on the Messerschmitt BF109G2 and her weapon is the MG42 machine gun. Her namesake is the German ace Günther Rall, the third greatest ace in the world.

  • The Ace: She is humanity's third greatest ace, even after the accident in Karlsland.
  • The Captain: She is the leader of the 502nd JFW.
  • Demoted to Extra: While she's a major character in Brave Witches, she gets a minor appearance in Road to Berlin along with Hikari.
  • Handicapped Badass: She was injured during the evacuation of Karlsland and after medical treatment and rehabilitation, she needs to wear a magical corset to prevent old injuries from flaring up. Even so, she is humanity's 3rd greatest ace, just behind Barkhorn and Hartmann.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gets wolf traits when using her magic.
  • Nerves of Steel: She is always calm and collective about the situation. Even eating Krupinski's cooking has her just commenting that it is bad without giving a reaction. She even keeps her wits about long enough to give orders to Nipa as everybody else is essentially paralyzed from laughter due to eating laughing mushrooms.
  • Not So Above It All: She even eats Edytha's caviar in the OVA.
  • Of Corset Hurts: Inverted, she needs her corset to keep her old injuries from hurting.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: She is the Brave Witches's commander and one of the top Witches in the world.
  • Rank Up: In Brave Witches, she initially holds the rank of Captain. Eventually, she is promoted to Major.
  • The Stoic: Of the polite variety. Rall certainly has emotions, but she outwardly maintains a cold, sterile, professional etiquette at all times.

    Major Georgette Lemare ("Georgie")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/georgette_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Haruka Terui (Japanese), Natalie Hoover (English)

Georgette Lemare is a Gallian Witch who lived most of her childhood in her family's inn. She is a sweet and gentle soul, but also world-wise and straight forwards, and also a good cleaner. During the evacuation of Gallia from the Neuroi attack, she quickly manifested her powers and enrolled into the military alongside many other Witches-to-be. While not a particular stand-out, she has a defensive fighting style and her healing magic is crucial in any team. Her Striker Unit is based on Arsenal VG-39 and uses a DP28 light machine gun. She is named after French ace pilot Georges Lemare.

  • Big Eater: Due of her healing magic causing her metabolism go into overdrive, she constantly needs to eat to keep herself in shape.
  • Combat Medic: She's the 502nd's primary medic in the squadron who can hold her on, if primarily defensively, in combat against the Neuroi.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has shoulder-length ones, which makes her seem the girliest of the Brave Witches.
  • Girly Girl: She at least feels like she is a girl alongside soldiers.
  • Healing Hands: She can heal, but her body temperature increases when she does it. She can use this to her benefit to warm other people and machinery up, however.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: An odd literal (and non-video game-specific) example, as her healing magic really does speed up her metabolism.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Georgie".
  • It's All My Fault: She blames herself for her inability to cure Takami to the point that she is unable to face Hikari. After Hikari thanks her for saving Takami's life, she was able to get over that mentality.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gets traits from a Persian cat when using her magic.
  • My Greatest Failure: Not being able to fully cure Takami.
  • Rank Up: At first, she initially holds the rank of Sergeant before being promoted to Major.
  • Serious Business: She takes winter cleaning very seriously.

    Ensign Sadako Shimohara ("Moha-san/Sada-chan")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sadako_mugshot.png
Voiced by: Marin Mizutani (Japanese), Dawn M. Bennett (English)

Sadako Shimohara is a Fusoan Witch originating from Onomichi, Hiroshima and was born into a family of scholars. Warm and nurturing, she is almost like a mother figure to the team, especially with her cooking. She has had extensive training from multiple places, including from Mio Sakamoto and from Karslandian night witches. She has all-around excellent skills in spotting targets and wilderness survival, though she has doubts about her abilities. Her Striker Unit is modelled after Yamanishi Shiden Model 21 and uses a Type 99 13mm machine gun. She is named after a Japanese ace pilot Uehara Sadao.

  • Cuteness Proximity: She absolutely adores cute things (including some of her teammates) and wants to hug them to the point that she borders into "creepy old man" territory.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She honestly thinks that she is only good at fighting Neuroi, and if she can't fight then she's useless. A good smack from Georgette snaps her out from it when she blames her for failing to defeat a Neuroi and getting Hikari injured.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Moha-san" (Sada-chan for Georgette).
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gets traits from a Fusoan rabbit when using her magic.
  • Magical Eye: Her special magic gives her both telescopic and night vision.
  • Team Chef: She is de facto chef of the Brave Witches.
  • Team Mom: The most mother-like figure of the Brave Witches with her caring attitude and her passion for cooking. Funny how she is one of youngest members of the team in terms of when she joined.

Noble Witches

The 506th Joint Fighter Wing, it was intended to be a group of nobles to serve in the defense of Paris. But due to the influence of the United States of Liberion, which has no nobility, and the resulting conflict between the Liberions and the Europeans the squadron was split into two distinct units serving under an overseeing commander. Group A, consisting of the nobles, are stationed out of Sedan. Group B consisting entirely of Liberions is stationed out of Dijon.

    In General

  • Multinational Team: Like all the other units, the squadron is composed of Witches from different nationalities, though like the Brave Witches, the countries they're from seem to be more limited:
    • Fuso (Japan): Kunika
    • Karlsland (Germany): Heinrikenote
    • Liberion (United States): Preddy, Marian, Jennifernote , Carla
    • Romagna (Italy): Visconti
    • Belgica (Belgium): Grunne, Isaac
  • Ojou: Unit A, with the special exception of Kunika, is primarily composed of nobles belonging to the upper echelons of society.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The divide between the democratic Liberions and the blue-blooded Europeans has caused conflict to erupt between both units plenty of times. Within the squad is two hotheads who wouldn't pass the chance to have a go at one another, a softspoken commander who constantly wants to quit her job, a hyperactive cola-loving ditz, and a money-loving Fusoan native who isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. Thanks to this, Perrine, Trude, and Hartmann see them as a rowdy bunch upon meeting them.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Though they belong to the same squadron, Unit A and Unit B primarily do not get along by virtue of the class friction between the non-noble Liberions and the blue blooded Europeans, necessitating the split in units in the first place. Kunika, who is in a unique position wherein she both does and doesn't belong to a noble bloodline and being the sole Asian member of the group, serves as a bridge between the two conflicting units.

    Lieutenant Kunika Kuroda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kuroda_kunika.jpg
Voiced by: Eriko Nakamura (Japanese)
A member of an obscure branch of the Kuroda Clan, she hardly had a noble upbringing. A veteran witch, she was adopted by the main family in order for Fuso to have a representative on the Noble Witches, as she was the only girl with magic powers in the entire family. Based on Tameyoshi Kuroki.
  • Alliterative Name: Kunika Kuroda
  • Big Eater: Loves to eat. As an example, early on she is dining with her parents and orders six portions of anmitsu. When reminded that there were only three people, Kunika responded by saying they were all for her.
  • Brutal Honesty: One of her defining character traits. She will say what is on her mind with little in the way of a filter.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: As opposed to Yoshika Miyafuji and Hikari Karibuchi, who are both Naive Newcomers, Kunika is an accomplished veteran witch with a long history of combat experience. Personality-wise, as a result of her experiences and upbringing, she contrasts the other protagonists by being naturally frank, especially towards those who've caused her, and most especially her parents, offense, and has a petty streak to boot.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Kunika is already an accomplished veteran with a belt of combat experience by the time she was assigned to the Noble Witches squadron at the beginning of her series.
  • Idiot Hero: Her lack of a filter and tendency to spontaneously act first before thinking things through has caused her and her squad a load of trouble from time to time. She has a noble and pure heart, but is a few screws loose in her head.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Like Yoshika, she takes on the traits of a Shiba Inu when using magic.
  • The Movie Buff: She loves Hollywood films and constantly makes references to them in casual conversation.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: One of her most notable acts of heroics occurred after a witch was shot down over the Mediterranean Oil Fields. Refusing to abandon her, Kunika carried her back to base through hostile territory with only a single Striker Unit on one leg.
  • Only in It for the Money: Kunika makes no secret of the fact that she is doing this primarily for the paycheck, since she is the main bread winner for her lower middle class family. Most of what she earns goes to supporting her parents.
  • Playing a Tree: In a School Play when she was younger, she was cast as horse dung.
  • Rags to Riches: She is from a modest working class family in Miyazaki that can't even afford a car, who gets adopted by the wealthy head of her clan in Fuso.

Major Rosalie de Hemricourt de Grunne
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosalie_de_hemricourt_de_grunne.jpg
Voiced by: Iori Nomizu (Japanese), Alison Viktorin (English)
The reluctant Belgican overall commander of the 506th. Aged out of active combat, she was pulled from retirement to lead the squadron after being convinced there were no other suitable candidates. A caring, but overmatched leader who struggles to make tough decisions and control her subordinates. Based on Rodolphe de Hemricourt de Grunne.

Major Heinrike Prinzessin zu Sayn-Wittgenstein ("Princess")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heinrike_prinzessin_zu_sayn_wittgenstein.jpg
Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi (Japanese), Rachel Robinson (English)
Flight commander of Squad A. Descends from a long line of Orussian aristocrats with her branch having later migrated to Karlsland, and with ties to European royalty. Brash, arrogant, and hotheaded, she often looks down on her fellow witches. The third highest ranked night witch in history. Based on Heinrich Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Gender-inverted. She has a highly inflated opinion of her abilities and makes sure everyone knows it.
  • The Cameo: She briefly shows up in the final episode of Luminous Witches while on night patrol as the Luminous Witches' song is spread worldwide via Ginny and Moffy's powers.
  • Global Ignorance: She grew up sheltered and knows very little of the world outside of western Europe. For example, when she first met Marian Carl she thought she was a noble from Liberion (a country that famously has nobility class at all) and that her hometown of Hubbard, Oregon was a major city of great renown (had a population of about 400 in 1945).
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She can go from calm to extremely frustrated with minimal provocation whenever her squadmates frequently push her buttons, and Kunika's antics tend to test her already short patience to its absolute limit.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her arrogance, due to a childhood incident with starving bandits, she believes strongly in the idea of noblesse oblige and that nobles and the wealthy have a duty to take care of the less fortunate. Also, her abrasive personality is something of a put-on and he real self is much kinder. When Kunika finds this out, Heinrike begs her not to let anyone else know as she fears it will damage her reputation.
  • The Lancer: As Commanding Officer in Battle of Squad A, she is one of two co-lancers for Grunne (along with Geena Preddy). Of the two, Heinrike is the one seen most often with Grunne since they are both stationed at Sedan.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She takes on the features of a black cat when using magic.
  • Overly Long Name: Very much so that Kunika has problems pronouncing it.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: She calls Kunika "Shylock", a derogotary term for Jewish people.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: She and Marian Carl can't even stand being in the same room with each other and are constantly competing to see who is the superior witch.
  • Tsundere: It doesn't take much to blow her fuse whenever Kunika bewilders her with her actions or with her blunt straightforwardness, but she knows when to display gratitude and appreciation towards her and their other squadmates at the right moments. Just don't rub it in her face.

    Captain Adriana Visconti
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adriana_visconti.png
Voiced by: Haruka Yamazaki (Japanese)
A skilled Romagnan witch, her rebellious streak and constant fighting with superiors caused her career to stall and get passed over for numerous positions, before eventually winding up with the 506th. Since Heinrike is primarily a night witch, Visconti leads most daytime sorties for Squad A. Based on Adriano Visconti.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She takes on the features of a caracal when she uses magic.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Downplayed. Witches are too valuable to the war effort to simply exile, but the Romagnan military does send her to the Noble Witches in Gallia in order to rid themselves of her.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Tied for the tallest witch (with Krupinsky), dark red hair, and very snarky

Ensign Isabelle du Monceau de Bergendal ("Isaac")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/isabelle_du_monceau_de_bergendal.jpg
Voiced by: Sayaka Nakaya (Japanese)
A minor noble from Belgica, whose family was forced to flee to exile in Britannia after the fall of the country. Fearing her powers would result in her being drafted into the military, her parents disguised her and raised her as a boy. This failed when a restless Bergendal joined the Royal Air Force, while still maintaining her secret. After the fall of Gallia, her true identity was discovered and she was reassigned to the 506th as a witch. Based on Yvan Georges Arsène Félicien du Monceau de Bergendal.
  • Amateur Sleuth: She envisions herself as one, although she really is rather amateurish compared to a professional detective like Sam Spade.
  • Gender-Blender Name: She was raised as the male "Isaac", but still prefers to use that name instead of her given name of Isabelle even after her true gender was revealed.
  • Little Bit Beastly: When using magic she takes on the features of a Bouvier des Flandres.
  • The Prankster: She once pulled a prank on Kunika that involved her putting money in her piggy bank and tricking her into thinking that a kindly Santa Claus-like figure within the military would gift her with more money so long as she did chores all around their base. At one point, she even calls a boy's attempt to prank her by putting a frog in her pocket as "amateur work" since she admits that she did far more elaborate pranks at his age.
  • Raised as the Opposite Gender: She was raised as a male and hidden away so she wouldn't be conscripted to the military as a witch.

    Lieutenant Colonel Geena Preddy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/geena_preddy.jpg
Voiced by: Nao Tōyama (Japanese)
The cold and efficient Liberion commander of Squad B. Based on George Preddy.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: She immediately figured out that Keera was the traitor because she correctly deduced that there was no way she could respond so quickly to the hangar bombing unless she knew it was going to happen in advance.
  • Cold Sniper: She has ice water in her veins and prefers taking out targets from a distance long before they know she's even there.
  • The Lancer: As the leader of B Unit, she's one of two co-lancers for Grunne (along with Wittgenstein).
  • Little Bit Beastly: When using magic she takes on the features of a Northern Goshawk.
  • Magical Eye: She possesses the "Hawk Eye", which gives her astonishing long range and detailed eyesight on the battlefield, a valuable ability for a Cold Sniper like her.
  • The Stoic: She seldom shows outward emotion. Even when her close friend Murphy is murdered, she keeps it bottled up inside.
    • Not So Stoic: She does have her occasional limits however, one of the times her steely calm expression and emotional state are broken; are found when an explosion suddenly rocks the base, startling her and in panic she tries to protectively tackle and sheild Rosalie from the blast shockwave and blown out glass of Rosalie's office. The only other time is seen in a Light Novel illustration where Rosalie is talking to her in Rosaile's office and Genna is listening intently with a warm smile.

    Captain Marian E. Carl
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marian_carl.jpg
Voiced by: Ayumi Fujimura (Japanese)
Marian is a Liberion Witch who grew up on an impoverished farm near Hubbard, Oregon and came to greatly resent nobles as a result. Based on Marion Carl.
  • Country Mouse: Born and raised in rural Oregon and somewhat bitter about it. She has developed a hatred of those that have looked down on her all her life.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Like Heinrike, it doesn't take much for her to blow a fuse, and she's just as quick to resort to violence if she gets pissed off, especially if it involves Heinrike or Kunika's weirdo antics.
  • Hated Hometown: She hates talking about her backwater hometown in Hubbard because of how impoverished her life was back there and how it could offer her nothing but a bad, unfulfilling future if she continued to live there.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She'd rather die than admit it, but she does care for the whole squadron, including Heinrike and Kunika. In a rare moment of emotional honesty, she confesses that it hurts her deep down whenever Kunika smiles as if there wasn't a single difference between the nobles and the Liberions in their squad.
Kunika: Granny always told me that people who seem mean actually conceal a warm heart.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Responsible for the majority of the profanity in the series. Gets to Cluster F-Bomb levels if Heinrike is around.
  • Little Bit Beastly: When using magic she takes on the features of an American Quarter Horse.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Heinrike. The two of them can't even stand being in the same room with each other and are constantly competing to see who is the superior witch.
  • Super-Speed: Her power. She aspires to break Yeager's speed records.
  • Tsundere: Kunika's genuineness and optimism quickly wins her over, not that she would ever admit it.

    Captain Jennifer J. De Blanc
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jennifer_deblanc.png
Voiced by: Satomi Akesaka (Japanese)
A descendant of Hispanian nobles who migrated to Liberion. Was originally assigned to Squad A, but refused and insisted on going to Squad B with the other Liberions. Based on Jefferson DeBlanc.
  • Extreme Doormat: A secondary reason why she is chosen as the hostage is because she is the most docile of the Liberions and the others would be far more likely to fight back.
  • Frame-Up: Keera plants evidence to make it look like Jennifer is her accomplice in a series of bombings and murders across Gallia, instead of the innocent hostage she actually is.
  • Heroic BSoD: She undergoes one when Chris Keera murders two people in front of her.
  • Little Bit Beastly: When using magic she takes on the features of a Spanish Galgo.
  • Spotting the Thread: Subverted. Keera intentionally acted suspicious around DeBlanc specifically so that she would volunteer to escort her back to HQ in order to keep an eye on her, leaving Jennifer open to be abducted.

    Captain Carla J. Luksic
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carla_luksic.jpg
Voiced by: Sachika Misawa (Japanese)
A cheerful and energetic witch from Liberion who tries to get along with everyone, including Squad A, a rarity among Squad B. Based on Carl Luksic.
  • Genki Girl: She's essentially the life of the party in the squadron.
  • Little Bit Beastly: When using magic she takes on the features of a Maine Coon.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Coca-Cola. Upon her transfer to the 506th, she insisted on them having cases ready for her arrival.

Luminous Witches

League of Nations Air Force Aviation Magic Band "Luminous Witches" is a different type of squadron of witches established by Major Grace Maitland Steward in 1944. Instead of fighting against the Neuroi in the frontlines, the members of Luminous Witches focus on supporting the homefronts with the power of songs and music. Their central base is located in Britannia. All of the members of the team use North Liberion T-6 as their Striker Unit.

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lumunous_witches_logo.png

  • Familiar: Luminous Witches bring back the concept that the animals associated with the witches are actually familiars, with them being different creatures that are Invisible to Normals.
  • Glamorous Wartime Singer: The entire purpose of Luminous Witches to be singers to keep morale up, with an Idol Singer spin to things.
  • Multinational Team: To fit, only two of the members of the squadron are from the same country.
    • Britannia (Great Britain): Virginia.
    • Fuso (Japan): Inori.
    • Orussia (Russia): Lyudmila.
    • Suomus (Finland): Aira.
    • Gallia (France): Eleonore.
    • Karlsland (Germany): Maria.
    • New Zeiland (New Zealand): Manaia.
    • Romagna (Italy): Silvie.
    • Liberion (United States): Joanna and Grace.
  • Overly Long Name: The squadron's original name was the breathtaking "League of Nations Air Force, 72nd United Fighter Wing, Logistical Support Squadron, Aviation Magic Band". "Luminous Witches" is a on-the-spot Appropriated Appellation from the signs local kids had during their first concert.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Even in comparison to the members of other witch squadrons, Luminous Witches are composed of witches that have either had to retire from their duties, quit being witches, are unfit to fight in the frontlines, or weren't even witches in the first place.

    Sergeant Virginia Robertson ("Ginny")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/virginia_robertson.png
Voiced by: Mai Narumi

Ginny is a girl who comes from the Britannian countryside who wasn't an enrolled witch until joining Luminous Witches. She is overall a bit naive, but genuinely loves everyone on the team. She met her mysterious bird friend Moffy one fateful night and wishes to return her back to where she belongs. Thanks to Moffy, she is a Night Witch who can manipulate magic waves to play the songs she heard coming across the skies. Her namesake is Jeannie Robertson.

  • 10-Minute Retirement: After she accomplishes her goal of returning Moffy back to its kind, she quits the military and quietly leaves before her friends could properly say their goodbyes to her. However, she returns after she realizes that she still wants to sing and stay with her friends in the Luminous Witches despite her powers being gone.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: She didn't even know what Night Witches are yet is perfectly capable of utilizing her Magic Antenna without prior training. This is ultimately downplayed, however, as her being only able to receive radio waves and not send them means that she is not qualified enough to be a Night Witch for the military...that is, until Episode 7, where she eventually develops this ability alongside being able to detect Neuroi.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Her innocently optimistic and unusual approach to almost everything tend to have her friends label her as somewhat odd, but not only is her singing talent remarkable, she's shown to have immense potential as a budding Night Witch despite her unfamiliarity with Witches prior to meeting Inori and Milasha, as seen in Episode 7. She's powerful enough that it gets her noticed by the military higher-ups...who order that she be reassigned to a combat unit where her talents could be used in the frontlines instead.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Loses her powers after she returns Moffy back to her kind in Episode 10. She gets them back, even stronger than ever, when Moffy returns to her as a swan in Episode 12.
  • Cartoon Creature: Moffy is a lot more cartoony than any of the other familiars in appearance, with no one knowing what bird species she is. Not helped by the fact that Ginny met her during a meteor shower. Anna suggests that the reason for Moffy's appearance is that she had been raised by Ginny ever since she was a chick. Episode 10 reveals that Moffy is in fact a cygnet, and she later transforms into a black swan once she's broken her contract with Ginny and reunited with her flock.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: She's the first Witch protagonist in the franchise who's a legitimate non-combatant and unlike her predecessors, has zero connections to the military prior to being recruited to the Luminous Witches squadron, being a regular country girl before she met Moffy. She's also the first main character since Wilma Bishop who ostensibly isn't a native of Fuso but is instead from the Northern Britannian countryside (Scotland). Personality-wise, her character is set apart from Yoshika and Hikari as she's more openly an optimistic genki girl who loves singing and isn't as shy as how they first started out around her peers. She's also the first Witch in the franchise to have a familiar that evolves.
  • Cool Big Sis: A surrogate example. She's great at handling children, being all around fun to be with whenever she goes out to play with them.
  • Country Mouse: She was just a country girl from the upper-side of Britannia (Scotland) who ended up joining the Luminous Witches.
  • Enemy-Detecting Radar: As a Night Witch, she has the power to detect Neuroi, though she doesn't develop this ability until Episode 7, where she uses it to help out the Typhoon Witches during their mission.
  • Friend to All Children: She's great with kids and is frequently shown to love having fun together with them. The kids in turn, love her back.
  • The Heart: She's the Luminous Witches' emotional center and the unwitting reason the squadron managed to be formed in the first place. Her capacity for empathy, knack for listening and understanding her friends' woes and knowing what to say to help them out, and her unbridled optimism and kindness makes her the most invaluable member of their quirky little squadron.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She manifests bird wings and tail feathers when using magic, though no one knows the specific kind of bird she manifests. They're actually cygnet wings and tail feathers, as revealed in Episode 10. When Moffy returns to Ginny as a fully-grown swan in Episode 12, she gains swan wings and tail feathers to reflect this.
  • Mysterious Past: Not much is known about Ginny's background before she entered the story and joined the Luminous Witches. Her official profile doesn't say much about her beyond her personality and talents and stating that she lived in a remote Northern Britannian countryside. A tweet by Fumikane listing down the Luminous Witches's Familiars and how they reflect their partner Witch's personalities and backgrounds post-series even leaves Ginny, and only Ginny, and her connection with Moffy being the kind of Familiar she is, a mystery.
  • Mysterious Waif: Ginny is noted to be an oddball among her squadmates. She's a Witch who was unaware that she was one until her meeting with Inori and Milasha in London, little is revealed about her background beyond her profile and the show stating where she comes from, and she and her familiar, Moffy, an oddity by herself, hold a mysterious power that's rare even among Night Witches (who're already a rarity by themselves in the setting). She kicks off the series when she sings in public using her powers, which motivates Grace to continue her goal of establishing the Luminous Witches squadron despite nearly giving up a moment before. Her first encounter with Moffy was also very miraculous by nature and her unique partnership with her is intentionally given no explanation even in post-series discussions by Fumikane Shimada.
  • Naïve Newcomer: She hails from a remote Britannian countryside so she's unfamiliar with a lot of concepts that are considered common knowledge prior to meeting Milasha and Inorin. She didn't even know what Witches are despite being one herself, much to her friends' bewilderment.
  • Nice Girl: She's optimistic, friendly, and kindhearted, which helps her get along great with her new squad despite everyone's different personalities. She's also especially kind and playful towards children.
  • Protagonist Power-Up Privileges: She's the only Witch whose familiar evolves and changes form midseason, albeit temporarily, before Moffy reverts back to her previous appearance after having used up the magic she'd gathered for Ginny in time for their concert in the season finale. It's heavily implied and speculated by Mana that Moffy belongs to a rare species of familiars whose magic gets stronger the more they travel around the world. Due to this, Ginny's powers are much more powerful than average Night Witches, and is possibly the strongest Night Witch in the setting, having a range that lets her broadcast the group's performance and messages in clear detail during the finale from all over the globe.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Non-action example. The longer the Luminous Witches continue to tour around the world for their performances, the more Ginny's powers gradually develop during the series, to the point that she's become capable of sending messages to other Witches at a very wide range despite being initially incapable of doing so at the beginning. It eventually culminates in her being able to broadcast the Luminous Witches' performance at a worldwide range. It's revealed in the final episode that this is a plot point: Moffy's unique power of absorbing magic allows her and her partner Witch to grow stronger the more they travel around the world.

    Sergeant Inori Shibuya ("Inorin")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inori_shibuya.png
Voiced by: Minako Hosokawa

Inori is a gentle Fusoan girl who comes from a military family. She is usually kind and bit introverted, but there are times where she shows a side that refuses to budge on something. Her familiar is a calico cat named Okoge. She is based on Noriko Awaya.

  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains ears and tail of a calico cat when using magic.
  • Military Brat: Inori belongs to a military family in Fuso, with her father being stationed as an officer in Britannia.
  • Recurring Element: She is "the newbie lead's big-breasted friend" like what Lynne was to Yoshika. The difference being that their places of origin are flipped around.
  • Resigned to the Call: She originally just came to the recruitment interview to recommend Ginny to the team as she didn't believe that she was fit to be a singer. But when they were able to find Ginny thanks to her singing, she decided to stay on the team.
  • The Unreveal: Unlike her squadmates, the circumstances behind her wanting to quit the military in the first place aren't revealed, though it's implied that her initial fear of flying and general lack of self-esteem are the main causes of it.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Inori is initially introduced with a fear of flying, contributing to her insecurities as a Witch who failed to get into the military. She gets over it very early on upon being determined to track down Ginny and recruit her into the Luminous Witches.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She is officially called a "Fuso Nadeshiko", being a kind girl who can still stay firm.

    Sergeant Lyudmila Andreyevna Ruslanova ("Milasha")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lyudmila_ruslanova.png
Voiced by: Ami Aimoto

Lyudmila, or Milasha as she prefers to be called, is an Orussian witch who is a big fan of Aira. A decent witch in general she was dismissed from her squadron because of her horrible aiming skills. A girl with a personality of extremely energetic highs and lows, but who is always at the mercy of her surroundings. Although she has no intention of doing so, her natural energy and caring personality combine to make those around her wonder why she is always angry. Her familiar is a borzoi hound named Olivier. And her namesake is Lidia Andreyevna Ruslanova.

  • Amusingly Awful Aim: Milasha had to quit being a witch due to how awful her aim is. This is demonstrated in a flashback where she manages to paint around a stationary target board with an automatic rifle without landing a single shot on the target itself.
  • Ascended Fangirl: She got on the same unit as her idol.
  • Brutal Honesty: She has a tendency to be frank, but not out of malice or antagonism. She calls herself, Ginny, and Inori as "trash" in her first meeting with the other two after learning that Inori similarly failed in getting into the military like her and that Ginny is a Witch who can't fight at her age.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Unlike previous hotheaded, easily jealous, and Tsundere Witches like Perrine, Eila, Kanno, Heinrike, and Marian, Milasha sets herself apart from her predecessors as she becomes instant friends with both the main character of her series as well as with the lone Fusoan member of their squad from the start. She's also notably friendlier and more upfront with her kindness towards her squadmates despite her occasional embarrassment about it and is in no way under any illusion that she's better than anyone in her team in terms of skill. All the others before her start off as hostile towards their respective protagonists for varying reasons and it took a while for them to warm up to said protagonists until a certain point is reached. Also, despite her fangirling and being easily jealous whenever Aira gets in the picture, she doesn't overstep her boundaries with her and doesn't antagonize Ellie, her perceived rival, over her in spite of her competitiveness.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She insists on being called by her nickname "Milasha", over her actual name as even she thinks that her full name is a mouthful to say. Amusingly, even after Ginny instantly gets her name right on their first meeting unlike Inori, she still insists that she call her by her nickname.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She may idolize Aira, and while she feels bad about it later on, Milasha doesn't hesitate to call her out on pushing her and especially the anemic Maria too hard during a flight exercise in an attempt to relive her old glory days as it resulted in Maria collapsing mid-air.
  • Fangirl: Aira aside, Episode 7 reveals that she's also a big fan of Marseille as she was seen smiling happily at the autographed bromide she got from her.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She idolizes Aira, mostly because her inspirational songs helped get her through the roughest of times when she first joined the military. Thanks to this, she always yearns for her approval whenever they're together.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a little hot tempered when riled, and can be a little too passionate when it comes to her fangirling over Aira, but is nonetheless kind and considerate over others just as well.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains ears and tail of a borzoi when using magic.
  • Meaningful Name: Lyudmila literarly means "Beloved by people" (and the diminitive "Milasha" can be translated as "Cutie"). Pretty fitting name for an ido... hm... war songstress.
  • No Sense of Direction: She asks Inori for directions in the first episode, admitting she is not good with it despite being a witch.
  • Lethal Chef: She is not this bad but she admits that only her aiming skills are worse.
  • The Rival: She's referred to as Ginny's rival according to older versions of her official profile, though in-series, neither has actively displayed any form of rivalry towards each other (unless you count Milasha's competitiveness when it comes to getting Aira's attention). Episode 8 has her competing and forming a healthy rivalry against Ellie instead, which gets resolved in the same episode.
  • Tsundere: She's less standoffish than most tsunderes, even compared to her predecessors, but she's fond of masking that she deeply cares for her friends with her aggressive front, though she'll easily be flustered and in quick denial when people easily see through the act.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • In Episode 3, she calls Aira out for pushing Maria too hard during their flight exercises even though the latter has been more than trying her best despite her anemic condition.
    • Though the recipient wasn't there to hear it, she tearfully and angrily tells Ginny off for leaving them without saying goodbye after she quits the military and left their base without telling anyone.

    Ensign Aira Paivikki Linnamaa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aira_linnamaa.png
Voiced by: Ryo Mamiya

A veteran witch from Suomus who was already singing alongside Ellie before the formation of the Luminous Witches. While she is the only Ace Witch in the group, she stepped down from active duty in 1941 due to injuries. She at first appears to be cold to most things, but deep down she is an impassioned big sister for everyone when her image cracks down. Her familiar is an Arctic wolf Finn. She actually has two namesakes: Finnish singer Laura "Laila" Annikki Kinnunen and ace pilot Aarre Päiviö Linnamaa.

  • The Comically Serious: While she's not without her lighthearted moments, Aira is by default, serious and a little stiff due to her background of being a former disciplined Ace Witch for the Suomus military. This only serves to highlight just how hilariously awkward and dorky she can be whenever she has to deal with the group's silly antics during comedic moments in the series.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She's initially cold towards the whole Music Squadron idea and tries teaching the other members like they were actual witches due to her own problems. After realizing that there is a purpose of their existence, she softens up to the team.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Luminous Witches starts off with Aira as a famous Ace Witch. Much of her story line involves how she deals with suffering a Game-Breaking Injury and her initial indifference towards the idea of a music squadron.
  • Fatal Flaw: Aira's inability to let go of her Glory Days as an Ace Witch initially serve as a major problem for her. She gets better in the second half of "Gentle Light" upon realizing that there's a purpose of the Luminous Witches' existence.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: An undisclosed incident in 1941 caused her to be unable to properly channel her magic. She can still fly with a Striker Unit, but she is hopeless in terms of carrying a weapon.
  • Jaded Washout: With her Glory Days as an Ace Witch long gone upon stepping down from active duty, Aira becomes a depressed shadow of her former self by the time she joins the Luminous Witches. She gets better later on.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though she can be cold and abrasive to most things, Aira deeply cares for all life and respects her fellow witches as her friends.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains the ears and tail of an Arctic wolf when using magic.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In the episode "Gentle Light", Aira laments how hard she was on her comrades when Maria passes out during her training.
  • Outranking Your Job: She's initially angst about the fact that even though she is an Ensign and an Ace Witch, she is reduced down to being just a singer, something she holds over everyone else in the team. She eventually warms up over the purpose of Luminous Witches, however.
  • Retired Badass: Due to her being unable to properly channel her magic, Aira retired as an Ace Witch from the Suomus Air Force.

    Sergeant Eleonore Giovanna Gassion ("Ellie")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eleonore_gassion.png
Voiced by: Sayaka Tsuzuki

Eleonore is a Gallian witch who has been performing alongside Aira ever since she was pulled from the frontlines. She can come off as being bit strange due to her frank speech and conduct, but she is also someone who cannot help but to help others in need. Her familiar is a house cat named Rio. She is named after Édith Giovanna Gassion (better known under her stage name Édith Piaf).

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She gets really moody when she hears that Aira did a performance with Ginny and Milasha instead of her at the end of "Gentle Light".
  • Combat Medic: Beyond her being a witch, she also used to work at a Gallian field hospital before continuing to support Aira.
  • Cool Big Sis: Serves as this to the younger members of the Luminous Witches squadron.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Ellie is normally chill and laid back, but after she gets word about Gallia's liberation in Episode 9, she's in such shock that she becomes unusually morose in private despite displaying happy smiles to the public. She later confesses that she feels uneasy because she's afraid of seeing the state Gallia is in after the Neuroi ravaged it, though a pep talk with Ginny inspires her to go back home as planned in spite of her fears.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains the ears and tail of a house cat when using magic.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: She has the ability to talk with cats.

    Master Sergeant Maria Magdalene Dietrich
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maria_dietrich.png
Voiced by: Momo Hanae (2019–2021), Kana Furunaka (2022–onwards)

Maria is a Karslandian witch who subverts most of the standards from a witch from there. She is a soft-spoken yet formal girl who should normally be an excellent night flyer due to her night vision. However, her anemia means that she has hard time staying up, making her unfit for a regular witch duties. Her familiar is a flying squirrel named Flocke. She is named after Marie Magdalene "Marlene" Dietrich.

  • The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: Her biggest problem as a member of Luminous Witches is that while she is able to devise complex choreography for an air show, her being such a poor flyer makes it so that she is unwilling to take part in the training herself and intentionally holds herself back from creating even more advanced training plans because she knows that she would come off hypocritical for her to demand tasks she herself would fail at.
  • Heavy Sleeper: She considers being one hour late for morning duties to be an achievement. Unlike Hartmann however, this isn't due to laziness. Maria's anemia gives her legitimate reason for having a difficult time getting up in the morning.
  • Hidden Depths: She is actually really good at observing things, writing down on her notebook about her flying lessons and how others act like. She just has hard time putting her notes into action.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains the ears and tail of a flying squirrel when using her magic.
  • Overranked Soldier: The reason why she's a Master Sergeant is because she saved "some foxy guy" who was lost in the desert, and genuinely doesn't believe that she deserves that high of a rank.
  • Oxymoronic Being: She is an anemic night flyer, meaning that she has a chance of falling asleep on the duty she is most qualified for.
  • Stereotype Flip: Most of the Karslandian witches tend to fall into Germanic Efficiency trope, with the country providing with a long list of Ace Witches. Maria on the other hand was discharged due to her inability to get up in the morning. Except that when it comes to creating and issuing commands, she does not slack off at all.
  • Third-Person Person: She has a tendency to calling herself "Maria" to make herself appear to be more formal than she actually is.

    Sergeant Manaia Matawhaura Hato ("Mana")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/manaia_hato.png
Voiced by: Misaki Yuuki

Manaia is a witch who came from the New Zeeland Air Forces. She is one of most energetic members of her previous position, a girl who loves to exercise and dance when she can. She never managed to see action in the frontlines as her kiwi familiar "Kyuu-chan" made her too unpredictable in terms of effectiveness, but she loves her little bird friend all the same. She is based on Ana Matawhāura Hato.

  • Book Dumb: One of things that complicates Mana's flying skills is that she has no understanding on the technical terms of aerobatics. When Maria reduces the terms down to Buffy Speak, Mana instantly understands what she wants her to do.
  • Genius Ditz: Mana's capability as a Witch is highly dependent on the very capricious Kyuu-chan and she herself tends to march by the beat of her own drum. Yet, despite her difficulty in understanding technical terms, she's shown to be a talented pilot, is capable of easily learning difficult flight maneuvers so long as they're communicated to her in a way that she can digest, and somehow figures out how to change the color and size of her shield on a whim, a feat no other Witch has accomplished in the franchise proper prior to her teaching her friends how to do it themselves.
  • Genki Girl: Mana is always full of energy in both her mood and behavior. This is to the point that she has hard time not flying straight due to how excited she gets combined with Kyuu-chan's own behavior.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains Mercury's Wings and tail feathers of a kiwi when she uses magic.
  • Power Incontinence: Her needing to rely on Kyuu-chan to use her powers means that her potential as a witch lies on her capricious friend. One day she might be have so much energy that she has to fly for several minutes to calm down, and on the next day she might not be able to fly at all, all determent on Kyuu-chan's mood.
  • Token Minority: Beyond being the token dark-skinned witch of Luminous Witches, she is implied to be Māori due to her inspiration and background elements, making her be the first indigenous witch.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Compared to almost every other witch, Mana's magic shield looks different in design and color, and is way bigger than everyone else's in the squadron. The shield's size seems to be more due to Kyuu-chan's mood, but the color is something that is reflected from within Mana herself. The other witches were able to change their shield colors once Mana explains to them how she does it.

    Sergeant Silvie Cariello ("Silvi")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/silvie_cariello.png
Voiced by: Miu Kotosaka (2019–2021), Rino Yoshikita (2022–onwards)

Silvie is a Romagnan witch who in spite of her outstanding training results was thrown around by the different branches for some reason before finally landing in the Music Squadron. She is usually indifferent with most things, but her true passion comes forth when it comes down to fashion, being good at designing clothes. Her familiar is a sheep named Pekorus. She is based on Silvana Fioresi.

  • But I Read a Book About It: With all of the knowledge she already had about fashion, she admits to Jo that she was never allowed to even touch a sewing needle in her life. She quickly learns how to sew, but this is after a lot of bandages around her fingers.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Originally Silvi refused to tie her hair in a ponytail, as it makes her resemble her mother too much. After she grows to be more certain of who she is, she accepts Jo's offer to tie her hair up during her performances.
  • The Fashionista: Her true passion lies with fashion, being really great at judging and designing clothes.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains sheep ears and tail when using magic.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother, Rosa, died in 1935. The reason for it is not specified but hints are it was on duty.
  • Queen Incognito: She is actually Princess Silvana Adelaide di Carignano who had been hiding her real name so that others don't connect her to her mother. She starts to wonder just which side of her is the real one when visiting Romagna, but she eventually comes to accept that what she makes of herself is the real self.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Being a part of Carignano dynasty, she is a member of the Romangan royal family.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She's actually one of the princesses of the Romagnan royal family who chose to enlist in the military under a false name to help fend off the Neuroi threat to protect her people. The only reason she wasn't allowed to fight in the frontlines is due to the upper brass fearing what could potentially happen should Silvi be hurt or worse in battle. Apparently, according to Humikane, had she been allowed to be deployed in combat just as she had always planned instead of ending up with the Luminous Witches, she would've done okay overall.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: According to other characters, she looks a lot like her mother Rosa. This is actually part of the reason why she never was allowed to take part in active duty as they feared that she would suffer the same fate her mother did.

    Sergeant Joanna Elizabeth Stafford ("Jo")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/joanna_stafford.png
Voiced by: Kyo Tachibana (2019–2021), Rio Mamesaki (2022–onwards)

Jo is a witch who originally enlisted into the Liberion Army as a way to support her eight younger brothers due to her sick parents. She is seen as being everyone's little sister due to her age, but she also has a dutiful side to her who loves drawing. Her familiar is a prairie dog Smile. She is based on Jo Stafford.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's the youngest member of the Luminous Witches squadron.
  • Cool Big Sis: To her eight younger brothers at home, who all adore her.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her right eye is covered by her bangs, highlighting her socially awkward and shy nature.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains the ears and tail of a prairie dog when using magic.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: She has a grand total of eight younger brothers. With her being twelve, her parents must have been really active for all those years.
  • Only in It for the Money: She joined the witches to support her family when her powers awakened, and she tends to talk about any benefits she gets from her job and simply wants to work behind-the-scenes. However, she does admit to Silvie that she has enjoyed her time with the Luminous Witches for the work they have done.
  • Team Mom: While she is the squadron's youngest member, her having to take care of multiple younger brothers has made her be the most skilled in menial tasks such as cooking and sewing.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Growing up with a bunch of brothers she has a tomboyish look and mannerisms, but she also is good in household chores and likes girlish clothes.

    Major Grace Maitland Steward ("Gracie")
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grace_steward.jpg
Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu

Grace is a witch who fought in the Liberion Volunteer Army during the Dunkirk Evacuation. After retiring from active duty due to her age, she sought to find a way to help those who are still fighting the Neuroi, believing in the power of music. She eventually formed the Luminous Witches, a squadron of witches who cannot fight in the frontlines who instead use the power of song to heal others. Her familiar when she was still a witch was a horse. She is based on James Maitland Stewart.

  • Badass Pacifist: Even as a retired witch, she still sought ways to help those who can still fight, leading to the formation of Luminous Witches.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Back when she was still an active Witch, Grace used to manifest horse ears and a tail as seen in the prologue.
  • Meaningful Name: Considering that Ginny singing "Amazing Grace" is the thing what inspires her to form Luminous Witches, her being named that seems to be more than a coincidence.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As the founder of the Luminous Witches, she's always willing to listen to her fellow Witches on how to best perform their concerts.
  • Retired Badass: By the time of Luminous Witches, she has retired from active duty thanks to her age.
  • Supporting Leader: She effectively acts as the manager of the squadron, with Ginny being the main focus of the anime.

Other Witches

    Lieutenant Junko Takei
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takei_junko.png
Voiced by: Masumi Asano (Japanese), Kara Edwards (English)

Junko is originally from the Fuso Imperial Navy and now is the commander of 504th JFW. She is an old friend of Sakamoto and fought alongside when they were stationed in Libau together. Takei, Sakamoto, and Yoshiko Nishizawa were called "Three crows of Libau" for their outstanding performance in Libau. Her special ability allows her to raise her comrades' morale. She also is the protagonist of Nintendo DS game and one of the main characters in Maidens of the Heavens. In the anime, she appears as the commander of 504th JFW in episodes 1, 3, and 12 of Strike Witches 2.

  • Ascended Extra: She appears as a major character for the Nintendo DS game.

    Captain Hanna-Justina Marseille
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/HJM_5779.jpg
Voiced by: Shizuka Itō (Japanese), Colleen Clinkenbeard (English)

Marseille, also known as "Star of Africa", is yet another super ace from Karlsland. Originally from Karlsland Afrika Corps, she now belongs to the "Afrika" Joint Fighter Wing, which was practically organized just for her. She has incredible combat skill which is said to be one of the best in Allied Forces, matching that of Erika. Though her score is only up to 200 kills, Neurois in Africa are much larger than the Europe, making this score worth three times as much. Marseille is originally from the semi-official Doujinshi series "Afrika" which, as the name suggests, focuses on the North African campaign of the World Witches universe. She also makes an appearance in episode 10 of Strike Witches 2.

  • A-Cup Angst: Or in her case, "C-Cup Angst." Her breasts are big, but she is envious of Charlotte's, who're even bigger.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She makes a prominent appearance in "500 Overs".
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is very arrogant and thinks she is the best witch of the world but has a good heart and cares for others.
  • Red Baron: Outside of the other Karlsland witches, she's best known by her nickname, "The Star of Africa."
  • The Rival: She sees Erika as her only rival, though Erika couldn't care less.
  • Smug Super: She's one of the top aces in the world and a bit of a jerk about it.

    Captain Takami Karibuchi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takami_mug_shot.png
Voiced by: Rie Suegara (Japanese), Amber Lee Connors (English)

Takami Karibuchi is considered the pride and joy of Sasebo, Fuso and is part of the 508th Joint Fighter Wing "Mighty Witches". She is known for her ability to rush into battle and flawlessly shoot her opponents down with extreme precision. Even so, she is always optimistic on things, and can talk to anyone regardless of their ranking and can think of a solution regardless of the situation. Her biggest strive for glory was when she fought in the retreat from Libau. Her Striker Unit is based on Yamanishi Shiden Model 11 but was eventually given the experimental Shiden Model-4, which she nicknamed "Chidori" and uses a Solothurn S-18/100 anti-tank rifle. Her namesake is Takashi Oshibuchi.

  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: Once she gets better and she is sent off to rejoin the Brave Witches, she tries having Hikari return to Fuso to spare her from getting injured in the line of duty. Unfortunately for Takami, it backfires when she gets seriously injured once again.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Hikari, who looks up to her in turn.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Her "Absolute Eye" technique allows her to target and shoot Neuroi from the skies like flies, but causes intense amount of stress to ones body and mind that alone it can be borderline suicidal.
  • Foregone Conclusion: The fact that supplementary material had placed her as being part of the Mighty Witches makes it clear that her joining the Brave Witches is either temporary or does not go as planned. Both of them end up happening, first with her falling into coma, leading to Hikari take her place, and after she does join to take down the Grigori hive, she returns to Fuso after the hive was destroyed, with Hikari staying with the Brave Witches for good.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has a rather sizable scar below her left breast what runs into her left side what she gained during a battle in Libao.
  • I Call It "Vera": Non-weapon version, she calls her Strike Unit "Chidori".
  • I Owe You My Life: She's indebted to Yoshika for not only helping her recover from the coma she was in, but also for helping her track down Hikari's whereabouts at Takami's behest while giving Takami the optimistic reassurance she needed to hear at the end of the day before she left. In United Front, Takami was evidently more than elated to meet her again note , and so treats Yoshika with considerable kindness and respect. She hopes that she can get her sister Hikari to meet her soon as well.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She gains traits from a Red-Crowned Crane when using magic.
  • Magical Eyes: She can detect Neuroi cores through their heat signatures. And unlike Mio, she can freely turn her ability on and off. She also has "Absolute Eye" technique where she can see multiple Neuroi cores at a time.
  • Put on a Bus: She gets thrown into a bus in Episode 2 due to the injuries she received while fighting Neuroi and being forced to use Absolute Eye causing her to go into a coma. Takami does eventually come out of her coma at the end of episode 9.
  • Rank Up: At first, she holds the rank of Lieutenant. By the time she joins the 508th JFW, she is promoted to Captain.
  • Shoo the Dog: At the end of Brave Witches, she tries having Hikari leave the titular squad, since she doesn't want her sister to get injured. It doesn't work out.

Antagonists

    The Neuroi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/482e0e6dd2b6db4c539fc0b1b3aec63b.png
The Neuroi are a mysterious alien force that arrived from space one day and started wrecking havoc. Their goals are unknown.
  • Alien Invaders: The Neuroi have existed alongside humanity for millennia since the days of Egypt dominating the ancient world, if not longer; in such eras Neuroi adopted the forms and played the roles of various dangerous monsters, beasts and demons of myth, folklore and legend. It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution, and the quickly following after magical power revolution, that these monstrous, organic looking Neuroi started to slowly evolve and take on more machine-like forms. They eventually invade our planet in the late 1930s, signaling the start of the Europa Wars.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Every non-drone Neuroi has a core. If the core is destroyed, so is the main body and all drones created by the Neuroi.
  • Beam Spam: Most of the time, large-scale Neuroi attack by firing laser barrages, with occasionally focusing their firepower for a single, powerful laser.
  • The Blank: The X-11 Witch-Type Neuroi, while appearing to adopt the form of Witches; seem to lack any other distinguishable facial features save for their nose. They seem to typically have neither eyes nor a mouth; alluding to their supernatural and alien nature.
  • Cute Monster Girl: The Neuroi Girls near the end of Strike Witches and the beginning of Strike Witches 2 are really attractive to some people. Too bad the two that show up get blasted unceremoniously with extreme prejudice.
  • Eyeless Face: While this applies to the majority, if not nearly all Neuori; this is a particulrly striking feature with the X-11 Witch-Class Neuroi girls, which makes them seem more engmatic, myterious and "eerie" reflections of the witches. There are some exceptions, if granted technically; like the Sphinx Neuroi and a number of universe historical art depicting Neuroi taking the forms of Monsters, Dragons, Oni and other such beasts and creatures of humany mythology.
  • High-Tech Hexagons: Even though they are based on time appropriate vehicles, for the most part, the hexagonal structure they have to make them look futuristic. And the fact that they can shoot lasers from them doesn't hurt.
  • It Can Think:
    • Upon first glance one would mistake the Neuroi for being mindless Monster of the Week. But the actual fact is that, while perhaps at times single-minded and stubborn; intelligence and sentience lies within the alien minds of the Neuroi; using various kinds and degrees of tactics and strategies throughout the series, some of which range from the rudimentary while others are rather ambitious. The X-11 Witch type by far had the most extensive display of intelligence with it's interactions with Yoshika on their first contact; being able to tell that Yoshika wasn't shooting at it despite how usually Witch/Neuroi engagements are often hostile, showing it's core as a "gesture of peace and trust" and trying to communicate non-verbally with Yoshika.
    • Brave Witches takes a step further when it is shown that Neuroi tactics have begun to grow and evolved to become more sophisticated and are starting to mirror human tactics: even if it's clear, while they are trying to emulate human concepts of warfare and tactics; they struggle in grasping fully the concepts of such tactics as well as trying to overcome a learning curve in the execution.
    • The series even shows that the Neuroi can even feel EMOTIONS: in the Movie when Shirley taunts the air type Neuroi infuriating Venizian airspace: it seems to shown actual frustration by making a harsh cry, as if in anger, and promptly giving chase; other media at times show some witches, like Hannalore Kummel, actually eliciting fear from Neuroi at times.
  • Kill It with Water: Downplayed as while Neuroi haven't shown to be weak to water, they for whatever reason seem to hate water as evident by the lack of any aquatic Neuroi and them trying to find ways to get around large bodies of water such as one forming into a Weather-Control Machine in order to freeze lakes earlier.
  • Mechanical Lifeforms: The Neuroi are vaguely mechanical, and mostly use forms based on vehicles and such, with some exceptions.
  • No Body Left Behind: Whenever a Neuroi's core is destroyed, their external bodies shatter into millions of fragments, very rarely leaving behind even shrapnel.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The first known Neuroi which invaded the Earth were sealed beneath an Egyptian city. While even knowing about the existence of the seal would break it, it was only broken during the Second Neuroi War.
  • Starfish Aliens: They feed on the land's soil for energy, and though they are Mechanical Lifeforms, they show little to no mechanical structure from the inside. Some pictures in the film seem to indicate that Neuroi used to take animal-like appearances like those resembling Hydra, Orochi, Tsuchigumo and dragons.

    General Trevor Maloney
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/general_trevor_maloney.png
Voiced by: Yosuke Akimoto (Japanese), Cole Brown (English)Foreign VAs

Maloney is a general who serves in the Britannian RAF. He was well against the Witch program since it was created by his political rival. He's also the commander of the 1st Assault Unit codenamed "Warlock" and funded an advanced project to render the Witches obsolete.

  • Ascended Extra: Is a playable character in the Shoot 'Em Up doujin, flying the Warlock.
  • Fantastic Racism: His contempt towards the Witches may not be just because they were the brain child of his rival, but probably because they're... well, witches.
  • Fatal Flaw: His low regard for the Witches in general and use of the "Warlock" technology proves to be his undoing.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Blatantly so, his low regard for the Witches could be, besides being created by his rival, that of their gender and they should not be in the frontlines "stealing" valor from men. Notably, after disbanding the Witches and taking over their base of operations, his team consists almost entirely of men with not a single female seen amongst them.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: He is an Evil Brit and a Smug Snake, unlike Leigh-Mallory in real life.
  • The Neidermeyer: He's an Evil Brit general with an Irrational Hatred of the Strike Witches.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: He's based on the Royal Air Force Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: At the end of Strike Witches, he's captured by Minna, Barkhorn and Hartmann once his actions are exposed.

    Major Chris Keera
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/major_chris_keera.png
Chris is Gallian Intelligence Officer who arrives to oversee an investigation into the Noble Witches after a bomb destroys a hangar at Sedan, determined to find a traitor in the group. Or so it seems. In reality, she's an assassin working for disgruntled nobles who want to overthrow the Gallian Republic and restore the Bourbon Dynasty as monarchs. She's also secretly a witch. Unmarked spoilers are below.

  • Child Soldiers: A flashback shows that she was trained to be an assassin and killed her first targets at a very young age.
  • Disney Villain Death: She falls to her apparent death after her Striker Unit is destroyed over the English Channel.
  • Dying Declaration of Hate: She falls to her seeming death telling Kunika how she didn't like her from the start and that she envied her free spirit.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In her first scene, she forces Grunne to fire an innocent mechanic simply because she wanted to give the appearance they were doing something.
  • Faking the Dead: She apparently tries to flee Marseille with Jennifer on a steamship that is quickly blown up before it can escape. This was a setup to cover the real escape plan using a U-boat.
  • French Jerk: Even before The Reveal.
  • The Heavy: While she works for a larger organization, they are never seen on screen and it is Keera that becomes the main antagonist of Noble Witches.
  • In the Back: Stabs Kunika in the back twice with her dagger during their scuffle in her final confrontation with her. Luckily, Kunika survives her injuries despite almost bleeding out.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Noble Witches gets considerably darker when she appears and moreso after The Reveal. Keera is arguably the darkest villain in the entire franchise.
  • The Mole: She's one within Gallian Intelligence, seeking to overthrow the Gallian government.
  • Pet the Dog: She's a dangerously ruthless and borderline sadistic fanatic, but she still goes out of her way to genuinely comfort Jennifer when she starts talking lowly about her own self-worth even after she took her hostage. Even she's surprised at her own gesture of goodwill towards her.
  • Professional Killer: What she really is.
  • Rich Bitch: She's a noble who despises commoners and Liberions in particular.
  • Self-Disposing Villain: Kuroda grabs her hand after her Striker Unit is destroyed in their duel. Keera chooses to let go and fall to her death rather than be rescued.

Ursula is Erica's identical twin sister and a brilliant engineer who designs and build strike units, including a Me-262 jet striker prototype used by Trude. She is introduced at the end of episode 4 of Strike Witches 2, where she offers the 501st a sack of potatoes as an apology for the super jet striker unit being unstable. Formerly a member of the 507JFW, AKA the Suomus Misfits Squadron.

  • Covert Pervert: She gets aroused when her special jet fuel accidentally disintigrates the clothes of Erica, Trude, and Minna.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Averted, as she is based on the wife of Erich Hartmann.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Like Erica, she takes on the features of a Dachshund, with the tips of her hair turning black instead of growing animal ears, when she uses magic.
  • Made of Explodium: Some of the things she builds tend to blow up, as shown at the end of Strike Witches 2 (may also explain why the jet striker prototype she built for Gertrud eventually self-destructed).
  • Numerical Theme Naming: Hilariously played with when some of the protagonists first meet her and call her "Erica #2", not knowing she is Erica's sister.

Voiced by: Tesshō Genda (Japanese), Brent Mukai (English)

Patton is a famed Liberion general tasked with leading the liberation of Berlin from the Neuroi. Based on the real life General George S. Patton.

  • Artistic License – Gun Safety: Has a habit of indiscriminately firing his sidearm when he gets agitated.
  • Badass Normal: Unlike the Witches, he has no magic powers. It doesn't make him any less of a badass.
  • Determinator: When he is given an objective, he will see it through no matter what.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: He's based on George S. Patton, who fought with the Allied Powers in World War II. How he relates to George S. Patton who appeared in the semi-canon doujins is unknown.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite his bluster. When Yoshika defies his orders to stay grounded in order to save Kiel and needs rest as a result, he not only doesn't get angry at her, but he goes to Allied Command and advocates to delay the assault on Berlin for ten days so she can recover. After he's denied, he allows Yoshika to join him in his command tank for the attack so she can participate.
