William's side

    William Baratheon, the Black Prince
Officially the second son of Robert Baratheon and Cersei Lannister, William is actually the one trueborn son of Robert. After helping create a Royal Army and allowing the Blades to reform, he is sent to foster with Ned Stark in the North, where he becomes friends with Robb Stark, Jon Snow and Theon Greyjoy, as well as Arya Stark. The death of Jon Arryn kickstarts the story, as he ends up betrothed to Arya and then becoming the heir to the Iron Throne and the leader of the rebellion.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: At age of fifteen, he is widely acknowledged as the leader of the rebellion against Joffrey's faction.
  • A Father to His Men: Likes mingling with the men under his command, heavily laments every death caused by battle and does not like people disparaging the death of his men.
  • The Ace: Great swordsman, leader, troop commander, charismatic, intelligent... and the Dragonborn.
  • Amazon Chaser: Very much prefers Action Girl Arya Stark to Ms. Fanservice Margaery Tyrell.
  • Arranged Marriage: He is betrothed to Arya Stark.
  • Battle Couple: Forms one with Arya.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He is one of the nicest people in the story. Does not mean he cannot wallop you.
  • Big Brother Instinct: One of the reasons he dislikes Joffrey is because how he mistreats Myrcella and Tommen.
    • Enough that Tyrion knows the Martells will dare not do anything to Myrcella, because William would, most assuredly, not like it.
  • Cain and Abel: He is the Abel to Joffrey's Cain.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Falls in love with his best friend, Arya.
  • The Chosen One: According to the dream William has of Uriel Septim, better known as Talos, the Ninth Divine.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Has black hair. Likes dressing in black (although not as much as blue). Probably one of the nicest people in the story.
  • Determinator: Even if he is close to fainting, he still fights to close the Oblivion Gate that opens during the Battle of King's Landing.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He will not stand for his troops attacking the innocent, torturing prisoners or raping women.
  • Generation Xerox: He is pretty much (physically) identical to his father when he was his age.
  • Heroic Lineage: He's the latest of the Baratheons, a family full of powerful warriors, and there's a chance he may be also descended from Tiber Septim, Talos himself.
  • Insult of Endearment: Arya calls him "silly stag".
  • Lightning Bruiser: Even though he wears heavy armor, he is very agile in the battlefield. Two of his Shouts make him even faster.
  • Made of Iron: Manages to go through three jousts against Sandor Clegane even though he has several broken ribs from the previous fight - in which he managed to stay on his horse even though he was just taking attacks without moving.
  • Magnetic Hero: Even Renly notes William is far better at getting people on his side than him.
  • Magnificent Bastard: He has his moments.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Being the Dragonborn, he can use special abilities based on using the Thu'um, the language of the dragons.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Not above using tricks to win battles. He is Tywin Lannister's grandson, after all.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: A follower of the Nine Divines.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: His uncle Renly tells him that, by marrying Margaery Tyrell, he would gain a hundred thousand soldiers and the Seven Kingdoms. He replies that he could be offered a million men and a thousand kingdoms, and Arya Stark would still come out on top.
  • Secret-Keeper: As he dies, Eddard Stark confides a secret to him, one about a promise he will not be able to keep.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Completely disagrees with this idea, making friends with Theon Greyjoy (whose father rebelled against his) and supporting Eddard Stark when he argues not to send assassins after Daenerys Targaryen.
  • Shared Family Quirks:
    • He has his father Robert's great charisma and Cersei's love for family, and when pushed he can demonstrate their tempers.
    • Stannis being his main male role model, he also has a strict "business before pleasure" mentality and willingness to accept his duty, whichever it is, although he has his limits and acknowledges that sometimes one has to take a break.
    • He has Tyrion's silver tongue, blunt honesty and love for books and knowledge.
    • From Tywin, he has inherited his pragmatism and political ability.
  • Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: While acknowledging that life has a bad side, he is firmly on the idealistic side.
  • True Companions: With Jon, Robb and Theon - forming the Brothers of War.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: The only ones who do not like him are the villains of the story, and not all of them, if that.
  • Worthy Opponent: Tywin agrees that he is one of the most formidable people he has crossed wits with.

House Stark

    Arya Stark, the Wolf Princess
Second daughter and third child of Eddard and Catelyn Stark, Arya has for most of her life felt a bit of an outsider in her family, as she is the only one to inherit the Stark hair and eyes, and dislikes the role her mother wants her to have. The arrival of William Baratheon to Winterfell gives her a life-long friend who supports her and her opinions, and while she later feels reluctance when their betrothal is announced, she soon becomes willing to join him wherever he needs.
  • Action Girl: Has no problem in going into battle and killing.
  • Arranged Marriage: Betrothed to William Baratheon.
    • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: While initially resistant to the idea, she ends up accepting it and then even hoping their wedding will happen soon.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: While initially resistant to the idea, ends up falling in love with William.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Gives Margaery Tyrell a Megaton Punch when they first meet after she learns how the older girl tried to seduce William - and that's after expressing her regret she could not "properly" introduce herself via her swords.
  • Damsel in Distress: Gets captured by the Lannisters, and taken by Tywin Lannister to King's Landing when he discovers her identity.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Gets her snark on with Tywin Lannister.
  • Dual Wielding: When she fights, she uses her katana Ice Fang (gifted by William) and rapier Needle (gifted by Jon).
  • Generation Xerox: Said to be the living image of her aunt, Lyanna Stark. This plays into Robert's willingness to betroth his son William to her.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Being with William, she also takes up a few of his skills.
    • An Ice Person: Her favorite Shout (so far the only one she has used) is the Frost Breath Shout - which she uses on Littlefinger, Gregor Clegane and several Lannister guards.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The reason she was captured was that she went on her own without her bodyguards, when she knew there were Lannister troops close by.
    • Her asking Jaqen H'ghar to kill the Tickler nearly caused a war between the Dark Brotherhood and the Faceless Men, but fortunately she was able to avert it. To her credit, she did not know that could actually happen, nor that the Dark Brotherhood had been hired to do the deed.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Joffrey and Sansa comment on her growth spurt and developing figure when they meet months after the last time they met.

Eddard Stark, Lord Paramount of the North
The veteran Lord Paramount of the North when the story begins, Eddard is suddenly pulled into the politics of the Seven Kingdoms when William Baratheon is sent to foster with him, a move that bonds his best friend's son with the Starks, and later he gets roped in by King Robert to become the new Hand of the King in the aftermath of Jon Arryn's death.

Catelyn Stark, Lady of the North
Having married Eddard Stark during Robert's Rebellion to forge an alliance between the Tullys and the Starks, Catelyn is at the beginning of the story a happily married Lady of the North who seeks to ensure the best for her five children as well as her husband's wards Theon and William (not so much for her husband's bastard, Jon Snow).
  • Crusading Widow: Supports William's intention to destroy the Lannisters.
  • Don't Make Me Take My Belt Off!: It's implied that she gave Will a spanking for taking Arya to Fort Dawnguard without telling anyone.
  • Happily Married: To Eddard Stark.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Her kidnapping of Tyrion is one of the causes that leads to the Baratheon Civil War.
  • Parental Substitute: To Will. Her demonstrations of this trope include giving him parental guidance and yelling at people for underestimating him.
    • Of course, the negative side of this trope comes into play, too—it's implied that she spanked him after he took Arya to Fort Dawnguard without telling her.
  • Team Mom: To the Starks.

Robb Stark, Lord Paramount of the North
Robb Stark begins the story in his mid-teens as an already proven warrior - having led men into battle against a Wildling army - and one of William's best friends. When King Robert dies, he has to take the leadership of the North in the absence of his father, intent on supporting William's claim to the Iron Throne and save his family.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He is barely a few years in puberty, but leads the North in their advance south to free his father, and takes his armies into the Westerlands.
  • Happily Married: Marries Jeyne Westerling for love, rather than doing so for honor's sake.
  • True Companions: With Jon, Theon and William.

    Sansa Stark
A young lady who thinks that romance and songs are real, Sansa seeks to marry the heir to the throne, Joffrey, only to be thrown off and left angry when her father won't arrange her marriage to him. This leads her to make a number of mistakes that have heavy consequences and force her eyes open to the reality of the world.
  • Adaptational Badass: Openly insults Joffrey in court. This costs her a finger.
  • The Atoner: Knowing that what she has done caused her father's death, she intends to do anything in her hand to atone for her mistakes.
  • Damsel in Distress: After the Lannister coup, she is a prisoner of the Lannisters. Gets rescued along with Arya.
  • Fingore: Joffrey has Meryn Trant take one of her fingers.
  • Heel Realization: Realizing her actions brought on her father's death does not do her much good, but at least it opens her eyes.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: She only wanted to stay in King's Landing so she could have the chance of marrying Joffrey. Her actions end up leading to her father's death.

    Brandon "Bran" Stark
Bran begins the story as a cheerful child who likes to do physical things like running and climbing, and that also wants to be a knight. When he suffers an injury that almost kills him, it appears as if his dreams will be undone, but he then gets introduced to the larger world of magic and the Aedra and Daedra, and suddenly things are quite different than he thought they would be.

    Rickon Stark
A young child who loves his family and becomes distressed as, one by one, they leave Winterfell.

The North

    Roose Bolton
Roose Bolton is one of the most powerful lords of the North, known for his cruelty an his pragmatism.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: While he's on the heroes' side, he's not above suggesting ideas that lean on this.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Suggests torturing prisoners even though his lord liege and his king have made it clear it is not to happen.

    Ramsay Snow
The bastard son of Roose Bolton, Ramsay seeks to become the future Lord Bolton, and is far more cruel and brutal than his father is. There are heavy hints of far worse things behind his sick mind, though...

The Blades

Several years after Aegon the Conqueror started his war to unite the Seven Kingdoms, a large group of people from the faraway land of Akavir came to Westeros and established themselves in the Riverlands. When they proved to be too good to be defeated, Aegon managed to make a deal with them, with them forming the Dragonguard, which would aid in protecting the King and ferreting out any threats to the Royal Family. When the Dance of Dragons started, instead of supporting either candidate they chose to disband, forming a sellsword company called The Blades, which would answer to calls across Westeros to aid those that could afford it. Apparently destroyed when Aerys the Mad chose to attack their headquarters at Cloud Ruler Temple in a fit of paranoia, they actually hid away until William found Dragonbane. When William ensured the Blades could return, the Blades in exchange decided to become his personal guard.
  • Cool Sword: Their katanas. As beautiful as deadly, and considered rivals for Valyrian steel swords.
  • One-Man Army: Ten-to-one odds are the kind of odds they find boring.
  • Seppuku: If their honor is compromised, they are willing to kill themselves.
  • Take a Third Option: When the Dance of Dragons started, both Rhaenyra and Aegon wanted the Dragonguard to support their candidacy. The Dragonguard's Grandmaster chose instead to disband the Dragonguard and founded the Blades.
  • Undying Loyalty: They are very loyal to William.

    Delphine
The current Grandmaster of the Blades, she survived Aerys' paranoid attack because her grandfather, then-Grandmaster Jauffre, sent her away with a prediction that the Blades would return. Living close by to keep guard over the Blades' former headquarters and to search for the lost Dragonbane, she decided to place the Blades at William's service after he found Dragonbane, the sword of Talos, which had been lost since the destruction of the Blades. Currently serves as William's main bodyguard, sword master and sounding board.
  • Action Girl: She is the Blades' Grandmaster, and William's main bodyguard.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Very deadly with her sword, and at least two suitors at her name - namely Syrio Forel and Prince Oberyn Martell, themselves no slouches in the badassery department.
  • Badass Boast: I will make sure that this fight haunts your dreams, to Jaime Lannister. True to word, even weeks later he can only think on how she could have destroyed him.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Her former lover Syrio Forel calls her Bunny, to William's utter hilarity.
  • Heroic Lineage: Her grandfather was the previous Grandmaster to the Blades, Jauffre — the man who flattened the Ebony Warrior with two swishes of his sword.
  • The Mentor: Taught William most of what he knows of sword-fighting.
  • No Hero to His Valet: She's all too willing to slap William in the back of the head when she feels he is being dumb.
  • Number Two: Is one of William's chief lieutenants.

    Esbern
Being away of Cloud Ruler Temple when the attack happened, Esbern hid away for years until William helped the Blades return to life, moment in which he returned to service. As the one with the most knowledge on multiple matters related to the Blades and beyond, he teaches William about history and other subjects, including the Thu'um after William proves to have a natural affinity for it.
  • Cool Old Guy: Smart, a great teacher and loves learning new things.
  • The Mentor: Teaches William and Arya about the Thu'um.
  • Non-Action Guy: He could probably fight, being a Blade, but his speciality lies in the field of teaching and erudition.

    Caius
A fellow Blade who also survived Cloud Ruler Temple's destruction, Caius' strength comes from his ability to organize and control a wide spy network that covers the Seven Kingdoms and beyond.
  • The Spymaster: He's pretty much William's Master of Whispers.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: All the time. William eventually gets better at detecting him before he comes out of the shadows.

    Ser Barristan "The Bold" Selmy
Ser Barristan Selmy is widely known as one of the greatest knights in the Seven Kingdoms, and the Commander of the Kingsguard when the story begins. As William's first teacher in the art of fighting, he served as his main bodyguard for some time until the Blades took up that position, and remains one of William's mentors and most trusted people. When the war begins, he is put in a quandary between his duty as Kingsguard and his honor as a knight, which is solved when Joffrey expels him from the Kingsguard, upon which moment he joins the Blades to continue protecting William.
  • The Atoner: Decides to join the Blades, and thus William's service, to atone for not aiding Eddard Stark when he tried to proclaim William as the King.
  • Cool Old Guy: William admires him, and he was William's main bodyguard before the Blades were reforged.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Represents this archetype in Westeros.
  • The Mentor: William's first teacher in the art of the sword.
  • Worthy Opponent: The Blades were this for him.

    Fulgrim
Fulgrim is the main blacksmith of the Blades, and thus the only person that knows all of the secrets surrounding their weapons. While he remains as capable as he was in earlier years, his growing age makes it important that he takes in an apprentice to pass on all those secrets, lest they be lost.
  • Grumpy Old Man
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Grumpy like a bear, but good-heartedly takes Gendry in as his apprentice and expresses his interest when Gendry shows the ability to identify materials without seeing them.
  • The Mentor: Becomes Gendry's master in order to teach him the secrets of smithing the Blades' weapons and armors.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: He is the only person that knows how to make the Blades' katanas, and also knows how to make and reforge Valyrian steel.

    Gendry
The oldest of King Robert's bastard sons (with his half-sisters Mya Stone and Bella being older), Gendry is a blacksmith apprentice who becomes shocked at learning about his father's identity, and joins his half-brother William's forces as an apprentice to the Blades' blacksmith.
  • The Apprentice: He was Tobho Mott's apprentice, and currently does the same for Fulgrim.
  • Gendry, I Am Your Half-Brother: William tells him they share King Robert as a father.
  • Nice Guy: He's quite the nice guy.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: On his path to learn how to become this. Also, he has a rare talent that allows him to identify metals without seeing them, and infuse magic into what he is making.

The Legions

When Robert drunkenly complained about the fact that the Crown had few to none troops to directly call in cause of need, 9-year-old William had an idea and convinced veteran officer Tullius to help him develop it. Weeks (and a blackmailing of Petyr Baelish) later, a Royal Army started to take form as the Legions, proving themselves soon for their ability and professionalism, as well as their loyalty to William.

    Tullius
A veteran of many a battle, Tullius helped William develop his idea for a Royal Army, and was soon appointed as its general and de jure leader, helping put together an army made of people from all across Westeros. His leadership becomes crucial when Joffrey becomes the King and William contests this, starting a civil war between brothers.
  • Four-Star Badass: He leads the Legions.
  • The Mentor: To William, in the art of tactics and strategy.
  • Old Soldier: He is a veteran soldier. Robert mentions that he fought on the Rebellion and even managed to hold off Ser Barristan Selmy during the Battle of the Ruby Ford.

    Theon Greyjoy
Being a ward/hostage of Eddard Stark ever since his father was defeated at the Greyjoy's Rebellion, Theon's life had a large twist when he met and became friends with William Baratheon, who showed him the way to actually acquire the respect he was taking for granted. When forced to choose between his family and his friends, he decided to side with the latter, and currently leads the Sixth Legion as Legate (whose ships he designed, which the Ironborn learned to fear).

The West

    Tyrion Lannister
Tyrion Lannister, also known as "The Imp", is The Un-Favourite son of Tywin Lannister and another of William's mentors. His being accused of trying to have Bran killed and then being kidnapped by Catelyn Stark kick-starts the events that lead to the Baratheon Civil War. Ever since, he has been working to subtly undermine Joffrey's rule, as he considers William the better candidate for the Iron Throne.
  • Cool Uncle: William, Myrcella, and Tommen consider him their favorite uncle.
  • The Mentor: Instilled upon William his love for books and knowledge.
  • The Mole: Chooses to play this role for William on Joffrey's side, helping as best as he can by finding information and drumming up support for his nephew. He also plays a role in the destruction of Joffrey's fleet and the rescue of Arya and Sansa Stark.

    Tytos Brax
Heir to Andros Brax, Tytos was put in charge of a quarter of the Lannister Army, in order to provide support to either Tywin or Jaime Lannister in the event of necessity. However, when a cunning trick makes him believe he is surrounded by one of the Legions and he decides to stay put to avoid losing men instead of going to support Tywin Lannister, the latter lays all the blame for the losses in Riverrun and the Crossroads on him. This opens the way for Tyrion to get him to support William, helping Robb's armies to take the West in William's name.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: His armies and that of the Westerlings become this for Stafford Lannister.
  • A Father to His Men: Chooses to remain in position and fortify against an incoming Legion attack, rather than risk his men in a potentially useless run to aid Tywin and Kevan Lannister.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Decides to support the Black Prince after the Battle of Riverrun.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Tywin irrationally laying all the blame for the Lannisters being defeated at Riverrun and the Crossroads opens the way for Tyrion to convince him to change sides.

    Jeyne Westerling
Jeyne is the eldest daughter of Lord Gawain Westerling. A shy girl, she strives to rid herself of her shyness by joining her father's army as a healer, a role that leads her to meet Robb Stark.
  • Composite Character: She is one for the book's Jeyne Westerling and the series' Talisa Maegyr (the latter appears in one scene, though).
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Marries Robb shortly after meeting him.
  • The Medic: Joins her father's army healers in an effort to get over her shyness. She also knows a bit of magic.
  • Related in the Adaptation: She reveals that Maggy the Frog (the seer that made her prediction to Cersei) is a relative of hers.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Falls in love with Robb and marries him.

House Baratheon of Dragonstone

    Stannis Baratheon
Lord of Dragonstone and William's uncle, Stannis is one of William's foremost mentors and role models. While somewhat inflexible, he is nonetheless a good authority figure who can take difficult decisions. Upon the death of his eldest brother, Stannis has no doubts in swearing his allegiance to William, supporting him and bringing the Royal Navy with himself. After Renly's death, William names him Lord of Storm's End and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands.

    Shireen Baratheon
Heir to Stannis Baratheon, she is also William's only (and beloved) cousin. Having suffered the terrible disease known as greyscale when she was a small child, she still carries some scars on her face caused by the illness, although not as much as it may have been, thanks to the use of magic. Recently converted to the Nine Divines, the religion William follows, out of her worship for him.
  • Big Brother Worship: Well, William is actually her cousin, but he nonetheless fulfills the big brother role for her.
  • Converting for Love: Out of the (sisterly) love she has for her cousin, she believes in the Nine Divines.

    Selyse Baratheon
Stannis Baratheon's wife and mother of Shireen, Selyse is a woman who wishes to give her husband sons but has been unable to, which has caused her some mental disorder while she also ignores her daughter. Some time before the beginning of the story, she converted to the Red God, R'hollor, and invited one of its priestesses to Westeros to preach and spread R'hollor's word.

    Melisandre
A Red Priestess of R'hollor from Asshai, she strives to convert as many people as possible to R'hollor, but so far has not had much success out of Dragonstone. Unafraid of using her beauty to get away with what she wants, she misreads the situation several times, causing her to miscalculate William's reaction when she tries to rape him while disguising herself as Arya. She is right now in prison, awaiting William's ruling for the aforementioned incident.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Disguises herself as Arya to rape William, but he realizes who she is when she calls him "William".
  • Hot Witch: She is considered a very beautiful woman - her attitude, however, does not help her much.
  • The Rival: For Colette.
  • Sinister Minister: William gets the willies whenever she approaches him, even brushing his shoulder when she touches him there.
  • Smug Snake: She thinks herself to be William's trusted and valuable advisor, when he cannot trust her as far as he can throw her.
    • She also mocks Colette for using healing magic, which is actually far more useful than what she realizes.
    • She arrogantly claims the Nine Divines are a dying faith. The facts are against her: the number of followers of the Nine has grown massively in the last years, enough to be a threat to the Faith of the Seven, while the Red God's worshippers amount to a handful of people in Dragonstone, plus Thoros of Myr.

Joffrey's side

Joffrey Baratheon, First of His Name
Officially King Robert Baratheon's first son with Cersei Lannister, and thus the heir to the Iron Throne, he is actually the bastard son of Jaime and Cersei Lannister. Cersei's sheltering and overprotection has turned him into a bully and a sociopath unable to comprehend how the world really works, as well as someone who thinks himself better than anyone else when he is incompetent for the role, and the only reason he is still King is because of the work of better people (and the intervention of the Mythic Dawn cult).
  • Always Second Best: William is much better than him at pretty much anything.
  • Bastard Bastard: He is a bastard in both senses of the word.
  • Big Brother Bully: Bullies all of his siblings. The moment William begins to strike back, though, he starts to cower.
  • Cain and Abel: He is the Cain to William's Abel.
  • Dirty Coward: Fancies himself a great conqueror and warrior. He was cowed by Arya carrying a stick, tries to get himself out of any fight where he might lose, and had a Villainous Breakdown when he got in the middle of a battle.
  • Entitled Bastard: Throws tantrums about once every two chapters, particularly when people don't kowtow to him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Invoked upon him. Word of God firmly denies any possibility of him becoming a Champion to a Daedra: the good ones would be repulsed by his pettiness and cruelty, while the bad ones would deem him too much of a dumbass.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: The fact that his "father" prefers William to him and that everyone loves William rattles him to no end. As an extra, he actually has green eyes.
  • Momma's Boy: Cersei has sheltered and protected him his entire life.
  • Smug Snake: Thinks himself smarter than anyone else in the room, when actually he is in the lower end of the smarts department.

House Lannister

    Tywin Lannister
The head of House Lannister, Tywin was once hoping that he would be able to turn William into the heir he had always wanted, only for William to be fostered in Winterfell. Now, as the most (and almost only) competent military leader supporting Joffrey, he now leads the efforts of the Lannister army and that of their allies in order to achieve a victory over William, which he knows will be a difficult task at best.
  • Honor Before Reason: Acknowledges that the only reason he is supporting Joffrey, is because Joffrey and Cersei's actions made it impossible for him to join William's side.
  • The Mentor: Decides to mentor Arya so she'll learn how to be a Queen, just in case William wins.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: One of his foremost character traits. He will support Joffrey and Cersei, but also hedges his bets by mentoring Arya and protecting her from Joffrey's wrath.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Feels like this quite a few times, particularly after he arrives to King's Landing. It says something that one of the few people with a brain over their shoulders that he listens to is Tyrion.
  • Villains Out Shopping: He confesses he enjoys fishing to Arya. She's flabbergasted when she has the opportunity to see him doing so.

    Cersei Lannister, the Queen Mother
The Queen to King Robert Baratheon, Cersei decided to ensure none of the children she had came from Robert, continuing her incestuous relationship with Jaime Lannister. While William was a surprise, since it was obvious he was Robert's son, she still loved him, although not as much as her eldest, Joffrey. After her manipulations cause her husband's death, and a failed attempt to convince William to become Joffrey's hand, she is now in fear that either of her eldest sons will die at the other's hand during the war.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Book!Cersei was a possessive narcissist who viewed Jaime and her children as nothing more than extensions of herself and spitefully ordered the deaths of all of Robert's bastard children in King's Landing after his death. Here, keeping in line with the show, her love for her children is genuine (albeit extremely twisted, nonetheless), and Joffrey gives aforementioned order.
  • The Alcoholic: She is a heavy drinker - ironically, one of the things she hated the most from Robert.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Ever since her early teens.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Her wildfire scheme. As her father Tywin points out, using it for defensive purposes is incredibly stupid and risky.
    • Her scheme to put Joffrey in the throne is successful, but Eddard Stark's precautions ensure that William learns the truth of Robert's last will, leading to the Baratheon Civil War.
    • Her feeble attempt to get William to become Joffrey's Hand utterly fails, because she does not take into account the utter hatred Joffrey and William hold for each other and William's savviness (which makes him realize she caused Robert's death).
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Completely unable to see that Joffrey is a psychopath and completely unsuitable for kingship.
  • My Beloved Smother: She is insanely overprotective towards Joffrey, being unwilling to punish him and blaming others for his many deleterious actions.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Quite by accident, she manages to wreck the Tyrells' power-grab before it can get off the ground. Later, she unintentionally gives Robert the idea to have Will fostered at Winterfell.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: She immediately decided Arya Stark would never be good enough for William and cruelly tried to bully her into rejecting the bethrothal. Her failure only makes her loathe Arya more, and Margaery comments Cersei's hatred towards her future daughter-in-law is the strongest she ever saw.
  • Regent for Life: What she wants to be.
  • Smug Snake: Thinks all of William's actions will only strengthen the name of the Lannisters. Thinks she can easily find a way to get William to become Joffrey's second-in-command. Thinks she is a master of the game of thrones. Fails miserably at all three of these.

    Jaime Lannister, the Kingslayer
Best known for killing King Aerys the Mad as Tywin Lannister invaded King's Landing, Jaime Lannister is also acknowledged as one of the best swordsmen in all of Westeros, but, unknown to most of Westeros, he is also the father of Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen Baratheon, which causes no end of trouble when Robert dies. Captured by Robb Stark during the Battle of Riverrun, he is currently a prisoner of the Blades, whose treatment of him is starting to put him on the path to regain the honor he has lost.
  • Badass Decay: His fight against Delphine, and then training with the Blades, forces him to acknowledge that being a Kingsguard has dulled his skills.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He saves Garlan and Loras Tyrell and Delphine during the incursion into the Oblivion Gate, and closes it down when William is unable to.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: One of his biggest mistakes.
  • Heel Realization: Spending time with the Blades slowly makes him strive to regain the honor he has lost.
  • Honor Before Reason: After the Battle of King's Landing, instead of joining his father when he has the chance, Jaime returns to being a prisoner of the Blades, because he made a promise.
  • Pet the Dog: Openly praised William's sword-fighting skills.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: He's outright stunned when the Blades judge him worthy of respect for killing Aerys. The Mad King had forgotten that he was sworn to his people as a protector, while Jaime hadn't.

    Myrcella Baratheon
Officially the only daughter of Robert Baratheon and Cersei Lannister, her father is actually Jaime Lannister, which she learns some time after her half-brother William rises up in arms against Joffrey. Fully supporting William over Joffrey, she willingly lets her uncle Tyrion arrange her betrothal with Trystane Martell to secure an alliance between William and the Martells.
  • Arranged Marriage: She is betrothed to Trystane Martell.
  • Big Brother Worship: Adores William, knows he is far better a king than Joffrey, and has no trouble in marrying Trystane Martell if that will get them to ally with William.
  • Generation Xerox: Is said to look a lot like Cersei. Fortunately, her personality is a lot nicer.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has one when she learns her father is actually Jaime.
  • Heroic Bastard: Learning that William is only her half-brother does not put a dent in her willingness to help him win.
  • The Mole: She actually supports William, and she uses her travel to Sunspear as cover to give the Martells a message, proposing an alliance.
  • Smart People Play Cyvasse: Learns how to play cyvasse from William (although she suspects he lets her win on purpose), and is smarter than Joffrey.

    Tommen Baratheon
Officially Robert Baratheon's and Cersei Lannister's youngest son, he is actually the son of Jaime Lannister. Much like his sister Myrcella, he hopes William wins the war, as he thinks Joffrey is a horrible brother and king, but has so far had no role in supporting his half-brother.

House Tyrell

    Margaery Tyrell
Said to be one of the most beautiful women in Westeros, Margaery, the third child and only daughter of Lord Mace Tyrell, seeks to become the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, no matter who she has to marry. As a pupil of her grandmother, she is well cognizant of how to use the patriarchal system inherent in Westeros in her favor, and is not afraid of using her charm and wiles to make men do what she wants. When she meets William in an attempt to seduce him, but fails, she begins to grow out of that frame of mind. Currently engaged to marry Joffrey Baratheon, although very reluctantly on her part as she learns more about him.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Becomes disappointed when her attempts to entice William to have sex with her fail.
  • Gold Digger: Initially, she would have married anyone if that made her the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She begins to grow out of this after meeting William.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Averted. She is the only one in her family to realize dealing with Littlefinger (and allying with the Lannisters) is a mistake.
  • Ms. Fanservice: And proud of it!

    Olenna Tyrell
Mother of Lord Mace Tyrell, the Lord Paramount of the Reach, she is the actual brains behind the leadership of the Reach, manipulating her son to do what she considers the best path. A competent old woman, she nonetheless decides to get her son to ally with Joffrey and the Lannisters, even going to King's Landing in the eve of it becoming besieged by William's Legions.

    Garlan Tyrell
Lord Mace Tyrell's second son, he is also one of the best known knights of the Reach, ticking many of the boxes of the "knight in shining armor" role. Supportive of his family's attempts to marry into royalty, nonetheless realizes that his family may have bit more than they can chew by joining the Lannisters.
  • Enemy Mine: Helps William in his attempt to close the Oblivion Gate.
  • Heel Realization: When he watches a dead-tired William charge without fear for the Oblivion Gate, he realizes William is fulfilling the archetype of Knight in Shining Armor far better than himself.

    Loras Tyrell
The youngest of Lord Mace Tyrell's sons, he is best known as the Knight of Flowers because of the flowers that decorate his armor. Secretly in an homosexual relationship with Renly Baratheon, he takes advantage of their mutual love to manipulate Renly so he supports the Tyrell family's agenda against that of the Baratheons. After Renly's death, he, along with the rest of his family, joins forces with the Lannisters.
  • Enemy Mine: Helps William in his attempt to close the Oblivion Gate.

The Vale

    Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish
The Master of Coin of the Iron Throne, he is a man that takes advantage of the fact that most everyone underestimates him to embezzle large quantities of money without being noticed. Hates Eddard Stark because he married Catelyn Tully, and William Baratheon ever since William blackmailed him into funding the Legions with the money he had embezzled. Currently (appears to be) supporting Joffrey, seeing that he knows that William will punish him for his corruptive ways and all the damage he has caused to him and his family.

Daenerys' side

    Daenerys Targaryen, the Stormborn
Born after Robert's Rebellion had put an end to Targaryen rule over Westeros, Daenerys has lived all of her life exiled from what she considers her true home. Married to Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo by her brother Viserys, she eventually discovers she has the power of the Thu'um. But when tragedy strikes and her husband and unborn child are murdered by the Mythic Dawn, whom Viserys has allied himself to, she resolves to use her powers, her dragons and her growing army to defeat her brother and stake her claim to the Iron Throne.
  • Adaptational Badass: She learns how to fight with a naginata and her Shouts.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Viserys' Cain. After he indirectly causes her husband's and unborn child's death, she hopes to be able to kill him, as well.
  • Heroic BSoD: Learning that Farengar was The Mole leaves her broken down.
    • Finding the Amulet of Kings and being unable to put it on (which means she is not the Dragonborn) is enough to send her to the Realm of Madness.
  • Kill It with Fire: She kills Pyat Pree with her Fire Breath Shout.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Learns how to use some Shouts.
    • Blow You Away: The first shout she learns is the Unrelenting Force Shout.
    • Playing with Fire: Her go-to Shout is the Fire Breath Shout, which she also uses to teach her dragons how to speak.

    Khal Drogo
The most powerful Dothraki lord of Essos, he marries Daenerys Targaryen under the expectation that he will aid her brother Viserys to gain the Iron Throne.
  • Badass Normal: In a world where magic is returning, he makes do with a pair of curved swords and his fighting skills.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Dies killing three Dremora Lords. It's noted that killing even one without magical power is a major achievement.
  • Graceful Loser: When the Ebony Warrior defeats him, he willingly cuts off his braid and hands it to him, merely stating that he hopes to meet him again for another fight in the future.
  • Happily Married: Truly loved Daenerys, and his last thoughts were of her.

    Jorah Mormont
Formerly the Lord of Bear Island after his father joined the Night's Watch, Jorah was forced to exile himself after selling several poachers into slavery. Currently acting as Daenerys' main bodyguard and one of her advisors, he harbors an unrequited attraction towards her.
  • The Atoner: Swears to atone for his The Mole phase.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Has a pretty obvious crush (or more) on Daenerys.
  • The Mole: Was this for Varys, spying on Daenerys to eventually gain the freedom to return home.

    Farengar Secret-Fire
Daenerys meets this mage when they cross paths in the Dothraki Sea, and he decides to join her, protecting her and acting as her teacher and advisor. Unknown to her, he is actually a member of the Blades, tasked with spying and protecting her from potential dangers while trying to get her to drop her plans to claim the Iron Throne.
  • Conflicting Loyalties: While as a Blade his first duty is to William, he comes to care for Daenerys as well. It gets to the point that he admits that if they come to blows, he's choosing neutrality, as he wouldn't be able to put one above the other.
  • Cool Old Guy: Ain't exactly a spring chicken, but kicks ass with magic and weapon alike.
  • Court Mage: He is this for Daenerys.
  • Kill It with Fire: He has that name for a very good reason.
  • The Mole: Actually a Blades agent sent to spy on and protect Daenerys.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Takes Ser Barristan's role.
  • The Smart Guy: He is one of Daenerys' advisors, and noted to be very intelligent.

The Ironborn

The inhabitants of the Iron Islands, they follow the religion of the Drowned God, and they also engage in pirate actions both because of the riches it brings home and the belief that they are stronger than anyone else. During the Baratheon Civil War, though, their actions amount to little but being a nuisance to William's forces.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: They believe themselves capable of bringing the North down and sacking King's Landing. Their actions, so far, have been restricted to being the stompees in a naval Curb-Stomp Battle and taking (and losing) two Northern fortresses.
  • Rape, Pillage, and Burn: What they want to do. It is part of their religion, after all.

    Balon Greyjoy
The self-proclamed King of the Iron Islands, Balon Greyjoy strives to regain the independence his people lost with the arrival of Aegon the Conqueror - said independence being the freedom to raid and pillage anywhere they want. After being sorely defeated about a decade before, during his first attempt to establish independence, he has been licking his wounds and preparing for the next fight ever since, taking advantage of the Baratheon Civil War to proclaim independence again. So far, though, his efforts have been in vain.
  • Abusive Parents: Has no trouble in insulting and striking his son, whom he has not seen in almost a decade.
  • I Have No Son!: Declares this after Theon escapes the Iron Islands to warn the Legions - and after Yara loses to Theon in Deepwood Motte.

    Victarion Greyjoy
Balon's brother, Victarion is the admiral of the Iron Fleet, formed by all of the Ironborn's longships. His only intervention in the war so far has been an attempt to attack the "greenlander" fleets while they fight in the Blackwater Rush. Unfortunately for him, William manages to create a storm that destroys most of the Iron Fleet, making him a broken man.

    Yara Greyjoy
The only daughter of Balon Greyjoy, she expects to inherit the Seastone Chair instead of her brother Theon. Fully in on her father's plans to become independent and open the way for the Ironborn to continue with the Old Ways, she makes the mistake of mocking her brother and his attempts to get them to ally with William, leading to him joining forces with his friends. After being defeated by Theon in Deepwood Motte, she is now left with the knowledge that she brought it upon herself.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: How she saw her seducing and stringing Theon along, saying she was only teasing as a big sister would do to her baby brother. Theon doesn't buy it.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Realizes her mocking of Theon and support of raiding the North were part of what drove her brother away.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Her mocking Theon only managed to push him further in the Baratheon-Stark alliance's arms.
  • Noble Demon: Probably one of the few Ironborn who has something akin to a conscience.

The Wall

The Night's Watch

A once-great force of honor and prestige, the Night's Watch has seriously decayed in the last decades as the Seven Kingdoms only sends those who have committed serious crimes to man it. In charge of controlling the Wall - an imposing structure made of ice that separates the Seven Kingdoms from the rest of Westeros - they protect the lands south of it from the incursions of the wildlings, the people that live north of the Wall. However, clues that make it clear they will have to undertake their actual mission begin to emerge.
    Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander
Formerly the Lord of Bear Island, Jeor Mormont currently leads the Night's Watch in their vigil over the expanses north of the Wall. Without his knowledge, forces well beyond his ken gather there, and he may have to engage in what amounts to be a fight for humanity's future.
  • Cool Old Guy: He may be pushing his sixties, but damn if he will let that stop him.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Has no trouble in joining forces with the Dawnguard when it is obvious he will need their help.

    Benjen Stark, First Ranger
Eddard Stark's youngest brother, he chose to join the Night's Watch after Robert's Rebellion ended. The best of the rangers and explorers in the Night's Watch, he goes missing while on a mission, an event that leads to the Great Ranging.
  • Cool Uncle: The Stark kids love him.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Instead of getting lost in the woods with no one knowing where he is, he was captured by the Volkihar Clan and later rescued by Serena.

The Dawnguard

    Jon Snow
As Eddard Stark's bastard son, Jon thought he had no future left for him in Winterfell, so he seriously considers joining the Night's Watch. Upon seeing how far it has fallen, though, he takes up the offer to join the Dawnguard, a force that fights the vampires that live north of the Wall, where he takes an important role as one of its main leaders in the war against the vampires and the White Walkers.
  • The Champion: He is Meridia's champion, and carries her sword Dawnbreaker.
  • Cool Sword: Dawnbreaker, wich is very useful against undead.
  • Heroic Bastard: He was born to an unknown woman in the south, one his father was not married to. He is also The Hero in the Beyond The Wall storyline.
  • Light Is Good: He's a Dawnguard whose dress code is white. Later reinforced when the Prince of Light Meridia names him her Champion.
  • UST: With Serena.

    Samwell Tarly
The eldest son of Lord Randyll Tarly, he has never been able to fulfill the role his father demanded of him, until Randyll told him that either he left and joined the Night's Watch, or he would get him killed via a Hunting "Accident". When he arrived to the Wall, he rapidly became friends with Jon Snow, whom he joined as part of the Dawnguard, and is now part of the Great Ranging that seeks to find out what's happening north of the Wall.

    Serena Volkihar
A mysterious woman that aids the Dawnguard in their quest to stop vampires, she is actually a vampire herself, but one who turned her back on the other vampires (led by her father Harkon) because of their mad plans.

Beyond the Wall

The Wildlings

    Mance Rayder, the King-Beyond-The-Wall
A former Brother of the Night's Watch, Mance Rayder deserted at some point between Robert's Rebellion and the current day, and spent years trying to gather all of the Wildling tribes to form an army that can try to cross the Wall. As the Night's Watch and the Dawnguard later learn, though, he has very good reasons for this...

    Ygritte
One of the Wildlings that follow Mance Rayder in his quest to cross the Wall for safety, she enters the story when Jon meets her during a parley where he requests speaking with Mance Rayder to join forces against the White Walkers and the vampires. After escaping the vampire attack at the meeting, she finds Jon in the aftermath of his being kicked out of Castle Volkihar and escorts him to meet with Mance.

Clan Volkihar

A clan made of vampires that lives north of the Wall.
    Lord Harkon
Serana's father and the leader of Clan Volkihar, he seeks an Elder Scroll to turn Westeros into a land of eternal night where he and his fellow vampires may rule above normal humans.
  • Archnemesis Dad: To Serana.
  • Domestic Abuse: He outright murdered his wife for hiding their daughter and the Elder Scroll he coveted away from his grasp.
  • Offing the Offspring: When Serena makes her opinion of his plans clear, he has no trouble in trying to kill her.
  • We Can Rule Together: Offers Jon the possibility to become a Vampire Lord, partly out of gratitude for bringing Serana back to him, partly to spite Meridia by corrupting her Champion.

The White Walkers

    Alduin, the World Eater

The Mythic Dawn

    Mankar Camoran
The leader of the Mythic Dawn. He is a powerful Altmer (High Elf) mage that seeks to bring Mehrunes Dagon to the real world, which would cause its end.

    Raven Camoran
Mankar's son, he is also a mage but not as good as his father. Bites more than he can chew when he tries to fight Farengar Secret-Fire off.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: His death drives his father and sister to swear unholy revenge against Farengar.
  • Smug Snake: Thinks that he can easily take on Farengar Secret-Fire. Is completely wrong.

    Ruma Camoran
Mankar's daughter, she is also a mage but not as good as her father. She is the one that kills Daenerys' unborn child and Renly Baratheon.
  • Moral Myopia: Swears to take revenge on Farengar Secret-Fire after he kills her brother Raven - nevermind that the guy was trying to kill Farengar, and has murdered hundreds of people.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When she realizes Farengar is far more powerful and she is, she decides to get away while she still has a chance.
  • You Killed My Father: Daenerys wants her dead for magically aborting Dany's baby.
    • She later asks for Farengar's blood when he kills her brother.

    Viserys Targaryen
The last surviving son of Aerys the Mad, most of his life he has been traveling across the Free Cities in search of support so he can take the Iron Throne back for himself. After he makes the mistake of underestimating his sister Daenerys, he joins the Mythic Dawn cult, which has promised him their support.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Daenerys' Abel.
  • Took a Level in Badass: When Daenerys throws him out of the khalasar, he's nothing to write about. Under the Mythic Dawn's tutelage, he becomes competent enough to fight against William Baratheon one-to-one.
    • Downplayed, though, as both times William was in a severe disadvantage, being unarmed and unarmored the first time, and very tired in the second, and still he lost.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Daenerys convinced her husband not to kill him after he threatened to kill her. He replies by indirectly causing her husband's and unborn child's deaths, and has no trouble in the idea of her dying as well.
  • Unwitting Pawn: He does not realize that the Camorans are using him as a pawn so they can summon Mehrunes Dagon.

Unaffiliated

House Baratheon of Storm's End

    Renly Baratheon
Robert Baratheon's youngest brother, he is the Master of Laws when the story begins, and is plotting with the Tyrells to get them into power via Margaery. When the civil war begins, he initially remains neutral and gathers the army of the Stormlands and the Reach around himself, hoping to convince William to accept the Tyrells' offer. He dies when Ruma Camoran uses her magic to blow a hole through his body.
  • Cool Uncle: He genuinely appreciates his nephew William's political mind. Also, the first thing he does after the attack on their encampment is worrying for William's safety.
  • Evil Uncle: To a certain point. He doesn't engage in evil behaviour, per se, but considers trying to claim the crown over far more capable William and helps the Tyrells in their attempt to manipulate William for their own benefit.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: William acknowledges he is right in saying that accepting the Tyrells' terms would end the war rapidly, but William does not want to break his betrothal to Arya nor insult the North.

House Martell

    Doran Martell
As the Prince of Dorne, he rules the southernmost kingdom of Westeros with a velvet glove, while tracing plans to, among other things, get revenge on the Lannisters for their complicity in the murder of his sister Elia and her children.
  • Non-Action Guy: His gout, although somewhat reduced thanks to Sara's ministrations, still keep him from being a fighter.
  • Selective Obliviousness: He knows Sara is a spy for someone, but chooses not to acknowledge this because he likes her too much.

    Oberyn Martell
Doran's brother, he is a consummate fighter and lover who seeks revenge for his sister Elia's death. Once tried to seduce Delphine, but failed.
  • Amazon Chaser: He beat Syrio Forel to impress Delphine. She kicked his ass in return.
  • Hot-Blooded: Quite famous for this.

    Sara
Doran Martell's masseusse, she is in secret a member of the Blades, sent there to spy on the Martell's actions. Currently acts as Myrcella Baratheon's protector and mentor.
  • Action Girl: She is one of the Blades, and could easily kill anyone by attacking certain pressure points.
  • The Mentor: Begins to teach Myrcella Baratheon how to defend herself with needles.
  • The Mole: She is a Blade who works as a masseusse for Doran Martell.
  • The Tease: Flirts with Doran Martell as she uses acupunture to help him, and he answers in kind.

Other humans

    The Ebony Warrior
A warrior of unknown past and name, he seeks the best warriors in the world in order to find someone that can kill him in a fight.

Divine Beings

    Sheogorath
Daedric Prince of Madness.
  • Admiring the Abomination: He really likes the Targaryens. The crazier they are, the funnier they are.
  • Ax-Crazy: Fitting, since he is the Daedric Prince of Madness.
  • Mood Whiplash: Noted to jump between wrath and fun like playing hopscotch.

The Messenger of Akatosh, Valeria Targaryen
The matriarch of House Targaryen, eventually she was deified and became the Messenger of Akatosh.
  • Deity of Human Origin: She was the matriarch of House Targaryen. She is currently the Messenger of Akatosh.
  • Dragons Are Divine: Her association with Akatosh and with the Valyrians allows her to acquire the form of a white dragon.
  • Famous Ancestor: She is Daenerys' many-times-great-grandmother. Her identity became forgotten with time, but she was the one that gave name to Valyria.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Word of God compares her to an archangel.

    Meridia
Daedric Prince of Life Energy, Light and Beauty. Hates the undead, and has no doubt in empowering mortals capable and willing to put an end to them.
  • Above Good and Evil: Hates the undead with a passion, but does not care much for mortals beyond what they can do against the undead.
  • Berserk Button: Comparing her to Molag-Bal is a sure way to earn her wrath.
  • Knight Templar: Her hatred of the undead means she will do anything to destroy them.
  • Light Is Good: She presides over light and fire while being acknowledged as one of the most benevolent Daedric Princes.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She does allow Serena (a vampire, and thus undead) to join Jon's party, and lets her go unharmed even after she pushed her Berserk Button.
