Main members

    Tobi/Obito Uchiha

Obito Uchiha

A member of the Uchiha Clan and former student of Minato Namikaze along with Kakashi Hatake and Rin Nohara. He was presumed dead in a mission years ago, but he was found and rescued by a Not Quite Dead Madara Uchiha, who convinced him to join him in his plans to bring "peace" to the Shinobi World.

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: While most of his pre-Akatsuki backstory remains the same, here he never assumes Madara Uchiha's identity, and is implied to be a full-fledged member of Akatsuki from the get-go.
  • Adaptational Super Power Change: During Part I through halfway Part II of the story, he replaced his missing eye with Shisui's right eye (stolen from Danzo), giving him access to Kotoamatsukami. After he lost it, he temporarily replaced it with a Byakugan eye before transplanting one of Nagato's Rinnegan.
  • Adaptational Wimp: He never becomes the Ten-Tails' jinchuriki by the time he makes a Heel–Face Turn or his death.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Unlike canon, he actually does die when he performs the Rinne Rebirth technique.
  • Evil Former Friend: To Kakashi and Rin.
  • Eye Scream: He's on the receiving when when Rin gouges out Shisui's eye to take it back from him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: During the final battle, once he learns that Madara was behind the events that led to Rin's death in the first place, he switches sides and joins his former teammates in fighting him.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: If Sarada's inner monologue is to be believed, history has not been kind to him despite his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Internal Reveal: Tobi's identity as Obito is revealed to the reader in chapter 11 (during the Uchiha Coup D'etat arc), and to the characters in chapter 40 (the penultimate chapter of Part 1); unlike canon, where his identity isn't revealed to either until the climax of the Fourth Ninja War. This is mostly due to the fact that the fanfic assumes the reader has already read/watched the entire Naruto manga and/or anime.
  • Logical Weakness: His Mangekyo Sharingan's Pocket Dimension has quite a few weak spots that have been exploited throughout the story:
    • He can absorb enemy attacks into it and then redirect them back to his foes, but risks himself to get hurt by them if he keeps them held in there too much. Sasuke was the first to notice this when he absorbed an Amaterasu blast and got hurt by it when he partially warped himself in there to dodge another attack.
    • Building on the above, since he warps his physical body to dodge attacks, trapping someone in the dimension means his body parts are vulnerable to being attacked from the inside, as Rin proved when she allowed herself to be captured.
    • Lastly, since Kakashi still has his other eye, both of them have access to the same dimension, meaning that Kakashi can use his own Kamui to counter Obito's, either to prevent him from warping out, or rescuing anybody who gets trapped.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After he extracts the truth out of Zetsu, he finally comes to realize the consequences of his actions, with visions of all the people he killed directly or indirectly.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After Madara finally decides to kill Rin in front of him, he uses Outer Path: Heavenly Rebirth to resurrect her, as well as the deceased jinchuriki. And that also includes the ones who Naruto temporarily resurrected in Shadow Clones, making their resurrection permanent and complete.
  • Teleportation: His Mangekyo Sharingan's Kamui allows him to teleport anywhere, by warping himself into a Pocket Dimension and reappearing in his destination.
  • That Man Is Dead: As far as he's concerned, the Obito who Kakashi used to know died when he was crushed by that boulder. Up until he comes back helping his former teammates out anyway.
  • Villain Has a Point: At one point when he confronts Kakashi, he says that while Minato might have been a great ninja, he failed them as a teacher and protector. Kakashi is later forced to concede that he's technically correct on that, given that he sent them to dangerous missions and left their emotional issues unaddressed, which caused their team to fall apart.

    Pain/Nagato

Pain/Nagato

A descendant of the Uzumaki clan, and the current leader of Amegakure, who took over after killing its former leader Hanzo of the Salamander. He founded the original Akatsuki along with Konan and Yahiko, and was once a student of the Sannin Jiraiya.

  • Cynicism Catalyst: Like in canon, Yahiko's death was the trigger that made him lose faith in the world as a whole.
  • A God Am I: Has often himself referred to as a god, and given his power, it's hard to dispute that claim.
  • Please Kill Me if It Satisfies You: When Naruto confronts the real him, he says that the Konoha shinobi has earned the right to kill him in revenge for everything he's done right then and there. Naruto however refuses to comply.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: To Jiraiya.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Like in canon, he sacrifices his life to revive everyone who died in his attack to Konoha.

    Konan

Konan

A childhood friend of Nagato and Yahiko, and former student of Jiraiya. She founded Akatsuki along with her friends in their search of peace, until Yahiko's death sent them both into a downward spiral and led their organization to become terrorists.

  • Ambadassador: After her prison sentence in Konoha concluded, she requested the new Amegakure leadership to serve as an ambassador. It isn't specified what particular nation she was appointed to.
  • The Atoner: By the time of the Fourth War, she's doing her best to atone for her crimes by helping the allied forces fight her former Akatsuki comrades.
  • Flight: She's able to make paper wings to fly.
  • A God I Am Not: In the epilogue, the people of Amegakure continue to call her "Angel-sama", which she's not pleased about and tries (unsuccessfully) to discourage.
  • High-Heel–Face Turn: The only female member of Akatsuki, and the only one who defects from them.
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: At one point, she counters a fire jutsu with her paper shurikens, and wins.
  • Sole Survivor: She's the only remaining member of Akatsuki by the time of the epilogue (unless you count the still frozen Hidan).
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She's still alive by the time the Fourth Ninja War rolls around, fighting for the Shinobi Allied Forces.

    Zetsu

Zetsu

The most mysterious member of Akatsuki, comprised of a white and a black half with separate personalities.

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Unlike in canon, Black Zetsu actually is Madara's will manifested, so he is genuinely loyal to Madara.
  • Death by Adaptation: Black Zetsu dies alongside White Zetsu when Obito uses Ningendo to yank out both of their souls.
  • Demoted to Extra: In canon, Black Zetsu is The Man Behind the Man for Madara and serves as Kaguya's right hand man for everything. But here, his connection to Kaguya is never brought up and ultimately is a minor villain thanks to being killed by Obito.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: White Zetsu, instead of being incinerated by Sasuke's Amaterasu, dies when Obito pulls out his soul with Ningendo.
  • The Dragon: Seems to be this to Madara Uchiha, surveying his resurrection.
  • Green Thumb: Since half of his body is made of Hashirama's cells.

    Orochimaru

Orochimaru

The third of the three Legendary Sannin, who betrayed his former teammates and Konoha years ago. He's obsessed with gaining immortality and obtain for himself every possible ability from powerful bloodline limits.

  • Abled in the Adaptation: He never gets his arms sealed by Hiruzen, thus remains able to fully use them.
  • Adaptational Badass: He manages to successfully integrate several of the Bloodline limits he desired in canon, including the Sharingan, Wood and Lava Release, Dead Bone Pulse and Ice Release. He also successfully attains Snake Sage Mode, thanks to the DNA samples he obtained from Hagane.
  • Adaptational Karma: Canon Orochimaru was a Karma Houdini who is still performing his experiments by the time of Boruto. Here, he is killed by Tsunade during the Fourth Ninja War.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Since he never suffers his canon Villain Decay, and continues to be a member of Akatsuki for a large part of the story. Even after he leaves the organization, he allies with Akatsuki as opposed to against them when the Fourth Ninja War starts.
  • Bio-Augmentation: Over the course of the story, he successfully implanted into his body:
    • The Sharingan, which he obtained from a random Uchiha during the chaos of the insurrection.
    • Lava Release, which he obtained from Roshi's corpse.
    • Wood Release, from various experiments with Hashirama's cells.
    • Dead Bone Pulse, although how exactly he obtained it (since Kimimaro was still alive at the time) isn't fully disclosed.
    • Ice Release, apparently having gotten samples DNA from Haku.
  • Death by Adaptation: He meets his end in battle against Jiraiya and Tsunade, with the latter sucking out his soul. And with no Cursed Seals available, there's no way he'll be revived.
  • It Amused Me: Anko thinks the only reason he brought back Mizuki as an Edo Tensei zombie is because he thought it'd be funny.
  • One-Winged Angel: When he gets caught in Tsunade's Chibaku Tensei, he transforms into his Yamata no Orochi form to break out.
  • Power at a Price: Often gives his subordinates rewards for his services with powers and abilities, though most of the time it's just to use them as guinea pigs to test them for viability before attempting to use them himself. Anko says that anything he gives always has a price tag attached, with one of the few exceptions being when he allowed her to sign the Snake Summoning Contract.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He only keeps his subordinates around so long as they keep being useful to his plans. Once they serve their purpose or become a liability, he won't hesitate to discard them. This bites him in the ass, since Jiraiya and Tsunade find his location thanks to Hebiko's betrayal, and are able to defeat him for good.

    Deidara

Deidara

A missing-nin from Iwagakure, with the ability to create explosive clay sculptures.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed; he never trained his eye to be immune to genjutsu due to never being forcibly recruited by Itachi.
  • Bee Afraid: He can create explosive clay queen bees that spout smaller bugs from their stingers.
  • Death by Irony: A Mad Bomber who crafts his explosives into animals meets his end by someone else using explosive animal artwork.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Rather than committing suicide by blowing himself up to take Sasuke with him, he's killed by Konan trapping him in a coccoon of (rather ironically) explosive paper and setting it ablaze, leaving no trace behind.
  • Giant Flyer: Often makes giant clay birds for aerial transportation. Exaggerated during the Fourth Ninja War, when he creates a freaking winged dragon, that doubles as a mount.
  • Hypocrite: He does not like it when someone uses his explosive clay figures against him.
  • In Spite of a Nail: In canon he was forcibly recruited into Akatsuki by Itachi and Kisame. He's still a member of the organization despite Itachi not being involved, and Chapter 118 reveals that Konan and Pain were the ones to bring him into the fold.
  • Mad Bomber Artist: A skilled sculptor who loves Stuff Blowing Up.
  • Man Bites Man: Those mouths on his palms are just as strong as a regular human mouth, and he uses them to bite Kurenai's wrist when she tries to engage him in hand to hand combat.
  • Redemption Rejection: When he faces Konan during the Fourth Ninja War, the former Akatsuki offers him a chance to redeem himself like Konoha did for her. He naturally refuses.
  • Verbal Tic: Often ends his sentences with "-hn?"

    Sasori

Sasori

A missing-nin from Sunagakure, who is considered one of the best puppeteer ninjas to come out of it. Grandson of Chiyo.

  • The Bus Came Back: Returns for another go during the Fourth Ninja War as part of the Edo Tensei reanimations.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Instead of letting himself be impaled by his parents' puppets, he's killed by Hinata, who uses a Finger Poke of Doom to channel electric chakra to make his heart explode.
  • Irony: His puppet body is later taken by Kankuro to use it in battle, much like he himself did to his victims.
  • Mad Artist: Of a different kind than Deidara; he considers his puppets created from his victims "works of art".
  • Zerg Rush: He can command an army of a hundred puppets at once, though he has less control over them the bigger the number.

    Kisame Hoshigaki

Kisame Hoshigaki

One of the former Seven Swordsmen of Kirigakure. Wielder of the sword Samehada.

    Hidan

Hidan

A missing-nin from Yugakure, who joined the religion of Jashin to become immortal in exchange for bloody murder.

    Kakuzu

Kakuzu

A missing-nin from Takigakure, who's extended his life by stealing hearts from his enemies. He's also an experienced bounty hunter.

    SPOILER MEMBER

Toneri Otsutsuki

A descendant of the Otsutsuki clan's branch who resided on the moon, and has taken an obsessive interest in Hinata Hyuga.

  • Adaptational Deviation: The pair of Byakugan he implanted originated from Hiashi, not Hanabi.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: His first appearance was during the aftermath of the Hyūga Affair, long before Hinata becomes a ninja.
  • Adaptational Villainy: He never makes a Heel–Face Turn, and remains a major antagonist for Hinata through the course of the story.
  • Adaptational Wimp: At least at first, he's much weaker in terms of raw power than he was in canon due to the fact that his Tenseigan takes a lot longer to fully mature, and he's just as inexperienced in actual combat. Not that it makes it less of a threat.
  • Ascended Extra: His only prominent role in canon is as the main antagonist of The Last. Here, he's a recurring foe throughout the story in several arcs, specifically for Hinata.
  • Death by Adaptation: At Hinata's hands.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He briefly appears as early as Chapter 4, revealed as the true mastermind behind the Hyuga Affair and Hinata's attempted kidnapping.
  • Entitled to Have You: Towards Hinata (and later Hanabi), much to their disgust.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He expresses disgust at Orochimaru's willingness to desecrate Roshi's corpse for his own gain.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He was the one who hired Kumogakure to kidnap Hinata when she was a child.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: He attempts to murder Naruto on several occasions so he can have Hinata for himself. It's one of the many reasons why Hinata hates him so much.
  • Not Brainwashed: Downplayed. He actually was initially brainwashed into joining Akatsuki but his Tenseigan maturing freed him. He stays with them anyway because their goals happen to align with his, and his attempt to kidnap Hinata as a child happened years before he joined Akatsuki.
  • Not Good with Rejection: The more Hinata continues to refuse his attempts on her, the more he obsesses with her. By their final encounter he's completely off the deep end in full Yandere mode and goes for the If I Can't Have You… route.
  • Redemption Rejection: Hinata offers him a chance to join her and fight against Akatsuki during their final battle but he doesn't take it, leading to her killing him.
  • Stalker with a Crush: A very creepy example, since he's been stalking Hinata since she was three years old (at minimum), being the real mastermind behind Kumogakure's attempt to kidnap her.
  • Villainous Crush: On Hinata, like in canon, and later he extends it to Hanabi as well.
  • Walking Spoiler: Given that his appearance alters the course of the story and plays a larger role than in canon, his name is spoilered.
  • We Can Rule Together: Once he declares his intentions to let the war rage on, and eventually hijack the Juubi's power for himself, he wants to make Hinata his queen of the new world. She obviously disagrees.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Pale-haired and one of the most despicable antagonists of the story.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Says a variation of this in every one of his encounters with Hinata when they face each other. Naturally, Hinata's response is Screw Destiny.

Allies and Subordinates

    Kabuto Yakushi

Kabuto Yakushi

Orochimaru's right-hand man.

    The Sound Five

Kimimaro Kaguya

Last known descendant of the Kaguya clan, and leader of the Sound Five.

  • Abled in the Adaptation: Thanks to Orochimaru getting the Scroll of Seals, he's cured of his terminal illness. Thus, he's at full strength and health when the Sound Invasion arc rolls around, and survives well into the Fourth Ninja War arc before biting it.
  • Adaptational Badass: Downplayed. The Fourth Ninja War arc reveals that he and Tayuya are able to take the Cursed Seal to a third level, increasing the power though with great risk to themselves, though he's barely able to put it to use before being killed off.
  • Bad with the Bone: Thanks to his bloodline limit, Dead Bone Pulse, he can use his bones as all kinds of weapons.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: His Level 3 Cursed Seal increases his power even further, albeit putting a huge strain that could potentially kill him.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Along with Tayuya, he's the only original member of the Sound Five who survives past the Part I timeframe. He finally meets his end during the attack on Genbu Island (during the Fourth Ninja War arc), being vaporized by a Tailed Beast Ball from Killer B and Gyuki.
  • Hero Killer: He's responsible for the death of Choza Akimichi, impaling him with his bone drill.

Sakon and Ukon

Tayuya

  • Adaptational Badass: Downplayed. The Fourth Ninja War arc reveals that she and Kimimaro are able to take the Cursed Seal to a third level, increasing the power though with great risk to themselves, though she's barely able to put it to use before being killed off.
  • Creepy Centipedes: Her Cursed Seal Level 3 fuses her legs into a long tail and sprouts multiple pairs of legs similar to a centipede.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Along with Kimimaro, she's the only original member amongst the original Sound Five to survive the time frame of Part I. She finally meets her end during the attack on Genbu Island (during the Fourth Ninja War arc), being vaporized by a Tailed Beast Ball from Killer B and Gyuki.
  • Hero Killer: She's the one to kill off Tenzo, putting him in a genjutsu before repeatedly impaling him with her bladed arms.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: She knows when to cut her looses, as seen when she fights Neji and Kiba, and after the Time Skip when Itachi shows up.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Her Cursed Seal Level 3 sprouts an extra pair of arms, albeit with ending in blades instead of hands.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Like in canon, she's very foulmouthed.
  • Musical Assassin: Uses her flute as her main weapon, control her Doki demons, cast her gentjutsu, and also as a blowpipe.

Jirobo

  • The Bus Came Back: Returns as an Edo Tensei zombie during the Fourth Ninja War, albeit sent to find the remaining jinchuriki's location as opposed to being summoned to fight in the front lines.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Uses primarily Earth-based ninjutsu, and can even summon golems made of solid rock.
  • The Brute: The strongest physically among the original sound five.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Like in canon, he shamelessly tries to beg for his life right before Choji Megaton Punches him in the chest and kills him. Of course it falls into deaf ears.

Kidomaru

Juugo

  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed, but his few major appearances have him as an antagonist member of the Sound Five.
  • Demoted to Extra: He has a much smaller focus than due to Hebi/Taka having never been formed. The author even admits having no idea what to do with him and eventually just writes him out when Hebiko turns him over as a hostage to the Allied Shinobi forces as a show of good will when she defects from Orochimaru.

Hebiko and Hebimaru

Two adult clones of Kaida and Hagane created by Orochimaru who share their original's bloodline limits.

  • Ambadassador: Hebiko became an ambassador to Konoha by the time of the epilogue after she and her brother converted Otogakure into a legitimate ninja village.
  • Clone Angst: Averted. Despite knowing their origins as clones of Kaida and Hagane, they don't care one bit about it.
  • Doppelgänger Gets Same Sentiment: The fact that they're clones of Kaida and Hagane means that Naruto, Jiraiya, and Tsunade don't want to see them killed and would prefer them captured.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The two of them do genuinely love each other. In fact, Orochimaru abandoning Hebimaru after he's taken captive by Konoha directly leads to Hebiko defecting.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Sometime after the Fourth Ninja War, they take over Otogakure and turn it into a legitimate ninja village, with Hebimaru as the leader and Hebiko becoming its ambassador in Konoha.
  • Meaningful Name: Their names include "Hebi" (Japanese for "Snake") and they consider Orochimaru their "father".
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Orochimaru abandoning Hebimaru, compounded by Hebiko realizing how much of a dick he is by refusing to rescue him, is what leads to Hebiko betraying him, starting by killing Kabuto off for good measure, and then giving Orochimaru's location away to the Shinobi Alliance so they can find him.
  • Original Character: Just like their genetic donors.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Unlike their originals, whose names are unrelated.

    Other Otogakure Ninjas

Mizuki

A former Konoha ninja, who defected during the Uchiha Insurrection and decided to seek out Orochimaru for power.

  • Adaptational Badass: He's given an actual functioning Cursed Seal by Orochimaru, which makes him a lot stronger.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: His One-Winged Angel mode has more insectoid traits, as opposed to the humanoid tiger-like build he got in the anime's filler.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed. In canon he only served as a Starter Villain for Naruto, while here he remains a recurring antagonist throughout Part I, and is even among the revived by Edo Tensei during the Fourth Ninja War.
  • The Bus Came Back: During the Fourth Ninja War, he's revived as an Edo Tensei zombie.
  • Death by Adaptation: His fate in canon is never specified. Here, he's executed for treason offscreen after his capture and later revived as an Edo Tensei zombie.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Unlike in canon, he successfully steals the Scroll of Seals and delivers it to Orochimaru.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Firmly believes this, and cites it as his reason to defect from Konoha when he fights Rock Lee.
  • Killed Offscreen: He's arrested for treason and slated for execution just before the start of the Time Skip. While the reader never sees him being killed, the fact that he shows up as an Edo Tensei zombie during the Fourth Ninja War confirms it.
  • One-Winged Angel: His Cursed Seal gives him insectoid features, including a pair of additional arms that look like those of a mantis.
  • Technicolor Fire: The Cursed Seal makes his Fire Release jutsu turn blue.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Justified. It's kind of hard to get stronger when you've spent the past two years dead. His former students (who had gotten a Redemption Promotion in the interim) completely wipe the floor with him.

Zaku Abumi, Kin Tsuchi and Dosu Kinuta

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: They show up for the first time during the C-Rank Mission arc, before the Chunin Exams.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Kin lost both of her parents at a young age, ended up on the streets and nearly became a child prostitute in order to survive. Yakumo (who didn't exactly have a happy life herself) outright states that it's worse than anything she ever had to go through. Dosu and Zaku's backgrounds aren't specified, though they probably weren't much better.
  • Does Not Like Spam: All three of them develop a dislike of dango because of how much of it Anko ends up having them eat while training under her. However, they pretend to love it because they're afraid of incurring her wrath by insulting her favorite food.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Eventually, after they're taken prisoner and left under Anko's custody, they become Konoha ninjas.
  • Parental Abandonment: Kin is specified to be an orphan (father killed in a mugging and mother later died of exhaustion working multiple jobs to provide for her) and ended up on the street before falling under Orochimaru's influence. Zaku and Dosu presumably come from similar backgrounds.
  • Redemption Promotion: Justifed. Mizuki wasn't really interested in teaching them properly, while Anko (sadistic as she may be) actually does want to help them become stronger.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: All three of them survive long past the Chunin Exam arc.
  • Training from Hell: Anko's idea of preparing them for the Chunin Exams during the Time Skip was locking them in the Forset of Death for a few weeks and periodically sicking giant snakes on them. Needless to say, the actual exams were a cakewalk after that.

    SPOILER CHARACTER

Madara Uchiha

A former leader of the Uchiha Clan who founded Konoha along with First Hokage Hashirama Senju. Once Hashirama's friend and later his enemy, he's the one who set the actions of Obito Uchiha and the formation of Akatsuki in motion to enact his plan to bring "peace" to the Shinobi world.

  • Adaptational Deviation: How he got his Rinnegan here is changed due to the removal of the Asura-Indra reincarnation. Here, Hashirama's strong chakra when combined with his own strong chakra resulted in not only creating the Rinnegan, but also Six Paths Chakra.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: While Madara Uchiha in canon was a Smug Super who earned the hate of pretty much almost everyone In-Universe, he was at least capable of respecting opponents who could put up a good fight against him. Here, Madara will give praise to opponents that can last more than a few seconds against him, but if they start to get the upper hand, he loses it and proves himself to be the ultimate Sore Loser. Case in point, one of the most noticeable changes is how he acts towards Maito Gai when the latter opens the Gate of Death: Canon!Madara comes to see Gai as a Worthy Opponent for besting and almost killing him, and his final attempt to kill Gai before he succumbed to the fatal aftereffects was done as an act of mercy from his point of view. Here, Madara actually mocks Gai for using a technique that will kill him, insulting his efforts and laughing after he barely survives Gai's final attack. Needless to say, Madara's insults towards Gai's memory earns him the ire of his students, fueling their desire to avenge him in the final battle.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the end, he's the story's true villain and he isn't treated as a disposable pawn for another villain nor is redeemed by any of the characters.
  • Adaptational Wimp: During the final battle, he does not become the Ten-Tails' jinchuriki.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Part of the damage he sustained after taking Gai's final attack was getting his left arm completely blown off.
  • Big Bad: Steps up to this during the Fourth Ninja War, as the final opponent that the heroes have to face to end it due to Kaguya's Adaptational Heroism.
  • Blood Knight: As per canon, although Hagoromo claims that he's one only after the death of his brother Izuna created a void in his heart and refuses to fill it with love and instead with conflict.
  • Came Back Strong: Understatement of the year. As soon as he's battle ready, he wreaks havoc on the Second Division to show off his new power.
  • The Corrupter: As in canon, he engineered the events that led to Rin's death and Obito's Start of Darkness in order to get him on board with his plan.
  • Dark Lord on Life Support: Spent some time this way, until he entered a resurrection cocoon to restore himself to his prime. No longer the case as of Chapter 120, when he finally wakes up fully restored.
  • The Dreaded: To the Nine-Tails.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: He's decapitated by Naruto (and incinerated by Sasuke's Amaterasu for good measure)
  • Generation Xerox: To his ancestor Indra, as both of them refuse to bond with others and intend on making others suffer.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: After the damage he took from Gai's final attack, even his Healing Factor takes a while to fully regenerate his lost limbs (and Zetsu had to take him away to speed up the process). However, this does not apply to his head, as he dies after being decapitated by Naruto.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Given that he set Obito and Akatsuki's actions into motion, he remains this for a large part of the story. Once his resurrection process is complete in Chapter 120, he steps up and becomes active again.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Along with his left arm, Gai's final attack blasted off his legs and a large part of his lower torso.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: During the final battle, his Six Paths Perfect Susanoo is defeated by the Konoha 15 pushing his own giant meteor back at him. He survives the explosion and falls back for one last round, though.
  • Iconic Outfit: He considers his red armor to be this in-universe, and he continues wearing it when he goes onto the battlefield in the modern day (despite newer flack jackets being far more effective) to inspire the appropriate amount of dread in his enemies. To be fair, it's not like he really needs it to protect himself.
  • Moral Myopia: His idea of a perfect world is one where "no wicked men have the power to spread evil or start senseless wars". Rin quickly points out that he is the most wicked man ever, and he triggered the biggest war in history.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: Deconstructed. His brother's death caused Madara to forsake forming new bonds entirely in order to never experience the pain of losing a loved one ever again. However, this left a hole in his heart that made him unable to move on from such losses, which made him seek absolute power in order to fill that void, causing his descent into villainy.
  • No Body Left Behind: Defied. Using a time-delayed Izanagi, he made sure that Konoha picked up and buried his body after Hashirama defeated him, so that everyone would believe him dead.
  • No-Sell: When Itachi attempts to seal him using the Totsuka Sword, Madara just absorbs it along with the rest of his Susanoo.
  • Not Quite Dead: Unlike in canon, he's not dead, just on stasis inside a resurrection cocoon.
  • Off with His Head!: Naruto ultimately kills him by beheading him with his chakra blade.
  • One-Man Army: As soon as he's able to enter the battlefield, he decimates the Second Division of the Shinobi Allied Forces by himself.
  • Rasputinian Death: Survives Gai's final attack with the Eighth Gate, comes back for another go against Naruto and Hinata, and then takes his own giant meteor's explosion at point-blank range, somehow falling back to Earth in one piece (though clearly weakened). It takes the combined efforts of the Konoha 15, Naruto beheading him and Sasuke incinerating his corpse with Amaterasu to finally ensure he stays dead.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Invoked. He wanted to make sure the world at large would think he was long dead so as to lay low and prepare his return from the shadows.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: Despite admitting that Gai made him fear for his life, he still mocks him in front of his students, calling him "that green-clad fool".
  • Super Mode: He is able to enter Sage Mode.
  • Tempting Fate: When he fights Maito Gai (who is using the Eighth Gate), he boasts that nobody ever has broken through his Perfect Armored Susanoo. Gai manages to do so with a single kick, and even manages to get to him, sending him flying over a kilometer away. The only reasons he survives are because Gai was tired from destroying the giant meteors he tried to drop on the alliance before, and because the Susanoo absorbed part of the attack.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He tends to lose it whenever his opponents start to get the better of him. By the penultimate chapter, when he survives the impact of his own giant meteor and falls back to Earth, he's completely deranged at the fact that "a bunch of brats" almost killed him.
