Exetior and the First Trinity
The main antagonists of Continued Nightmare. The First Trinity are the protagonists of the prequel. Exetior
"Get ready, girls! We're coming!"
The main antagonist of the series. He is an Arch-Demon who wants to save Mobius from Erasure.- Adaptational Heroism: Downplayed. He is still trying to kill and demonize all of the heroes, but it is to protect them from a higher, more dangerous foe rather than pure sadism.
- And I Must Scream: While many of Exetior's allies were tortured or killed for their role in the war, Exetior himself was cursed to remain a Demon for the rest of his existence and was sealed away in a special prison. He was only able to escape after the Master Emerald caused violent energy outbursts.
- Anti-Villain: The reason he is trying to kill the girls as well as other Mobians and demonize them is so that their planet won't be erased by the Highests.
- Big Bad: Of Continued Nightmare Part 1.
- Black Eyes of Evil: Has these.
- Evil Sounds Raspy: He speaks in a low, raspy voice.
- Foil: To Sark. While the two of them are Demons of Sharpness (in the latter's case, he became one) and prone to anger outbursts, Sark is more brutal, while Exetior is calmer.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: A rare double case. He is the red to Negagen's blue and the blue to Sark's red.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has these, combined with Glowing Eyes of Doom.
- Tragic Villain: He killed and demonized Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman, and it was all to protect them from erasure from the Highests. When you consider that JaizKoys says that he was the one who created Mobius and the life within it, this explains his actions further and makes them all the more tragic.
- Villainous Friendship: With Negagen.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Although his goal to stop the Highests from erasing Mobius is benevolent, he has to kill and demonize Mobians to make them stronger.
Miles "Tails" Prower
"Hold on, Exetior! We're coming!"
Sonic's best friend, he was demonized along with Knuckles and Eggman in the bad ending of Nightmare Beginning.- Age Lift: Given how many of the characters have been aged up from canon, it can be safe to assume that Tails has also been aged up slightly.note
- Ax-Crazy: Oh, so much...
- Black Eyes of Evil: As a demonized Mobian, he has these.
- Hearing Voices: That voice in his head took on a physical manifestation known as "Inner".
- My God, What Have I Done?: Has one after he viciously attacked and ate Vanilla. Not like he wanted to kill her.
- Punny Name: Just like in canon, his full name is a pun on "miles per hour".
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has these, combined with Glowing Eyes of Doom.
- Slasher Smile: One of his dialogue icons has this.
- Tears of Blood: He has these when you run back to the beginning in Carnival Pursuit. Here, he's crying because he had just eaten Cream's mother, Vanilla.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: His failed demonization led him to become a mentally unstable individual.
Knuckles the Echidna
"But, I'm done. Do you have any idea what you've done? You ruined the girl."
One of Sonic's allies, he was demonized along with Tails and Eggman in the bad ending of Nightmare Beginning.- Age Lift: While he is 16 years old in canon, here he is 24.
- Black Eyes of Evil: Has these, as is normal for a demonized Mobian.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has these, combined with Glowing Eyes of Doom.
- Only Sane Man: He acts like a minder to Tails whenever he has anger outbursts.
Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik
I will avenge you, Jessy...
Sonic's main rival and Arch-Enemy, he was demonized along with Tails and Knuckles in the Bad Ending of Nightmare Beginnning.- Adaptational Heroism: Downplayed. While he is neutral to Sonic, he loathes the Freedom Fighters for killing someone close to him. (see Death by Origin Story)
- Death by Origin Story: Jessy, his daughter, was killed by the Freedom Fighters due to a misunderstanding.
- Evil Genius: He is considered a villain to most Mobians, and he has a genius-level intelligence to boot.
- Villain Respect: Downplayed. He's neutral with Sonic, but he has some level of respect for the blue blur.
Eye of Three/Second Trinity
These three are the main protagonists of the sequel. In Part 2, they were infected by the "Eye" virus that is supposed to strengthen them when they're demonized. Unfortunately, while the girls are alive, the virus affects them negatively, depending on the ending. Tropes that apply to all three girls
- Action Girl: All three of them are female, and are able to deal with several dangerous situations successfully.
- Big Damn Heroes: In the DSF Ending, all three girls come out of nowhere to save Sark Amy.
- Blessed with Suck: The "Eye" is a virus that is supposed to connect the girls to each other, so they can help each other when they're hurt. It will also make them a deadly weapon when together... but only if they're demonized. While they're alive, they aren't aware of the virus' existence, and if one of the girls gets hurt or dies, the other might go crazy or become suicidal.
- Driven to Madness / Driven to Suicide: Both are negative effects of the "Eye" on the girls while they're alive.
Amy Rose
"Of course! It's decided, then. It's time to teach you the basics of your new life!"
One of the three main protagonists along with Cream and Sally, she is a member of the Freedom Fighters.- Adaptation Personality Change: Amy is not obsessed with Sonic, and was in fact annoyed by his arrogance at first.
- Age Lift: She is 21-22 in this game, putting her roughly ten years older than her canon counterpart.
- Ambiguously Bi: Depending on the ending, she has shown an interest in both Sonic and Sally.
- Death Seeker: After defeating Negagen and accidentally killing a mind-controlled Cream. She is later Driven to Suicide when asking a now demonized Cream to kill her.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Sally.
- Mama Bear: She is very protective of Cream, who sees her as a mother figure, especially after Vanilla is shown to be permanently dead.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Cream's girly girl.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She's an excellent fighter (in the old version of Continued Nightmare, she can be seen wielding a crossbow), but she's in a white shirt with a heart on it and a skirt.
Cream the Rabbit
"Oh please, Mom! I promise I'll be okay! Plus, Mr. Knuckles will be there, so you'll know I'll be safe!
One of the three main protagonists along with Amy and Sally, she is a young girl who looks up to Amy as a big sister.- Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed. In her origin story, she used to bully everyone around her out of a desire to figure out who she was.
- Adaptation Personality Change: Her origin story describes her as not being an obedient girl, who would be kind but then bully everyone. In the main series, she is always well-behaved and polite.
- Age Lift: Unlike her canon self, who is 6 years old, she is 11 years old in this game.
- Beware the Nice Ones: She may be nice and polite, but she is more than capable of defending herself if someone messes with her.
- Break the Cutie: Any time she is Driven to Madness by the "Eye"'s influence.
- Cute Bruiser: She may be a young and small rabbit, but she can also deal with many dangerous situations with her strength.
- Disabled in the Adaptation: Her origin story mentions that she has a hyperactivity disorder, something never displayed in any official material.
- Driven to Madness: If she accidentally kills a mind-controlled Amy, this happens.
- Driven to Suicide: The Stinger of the In-Sanity Ending heavily implies Cream did this.
- Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She may be polite and well mannered, but she isn't afraid to fight and defend herself when she's in trouble.
- Kill the Cutie: Any time she is killed.
- Little Miss Badass: She is an 11 year old girl, but she is able to take down both Demonized Tails and Demonized Knuckles, as well as Brally, a demon.
- My God, What Have I Done?: After she brutally attacks Amy and Sally under the influence of the Eye, then leaves them in pain. After the influence wears off, she looks horrified and screams in the distance.
- Nice Girl
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Amy's tomboy.
- What the Hell, Hero?: In the Dissension Ending; this is her reaction after Sally kills a mind-controlled Amy in self-defense.
Sally Nettle
"Amy, I.... I lo..."
One of the three main protagonists along with Amy and Cream, she is the leader of the Freedom Fighters.- Adaptation Name Change: Sally's full name is Sally 'Nettle' instead of Sally Acorn.
- Adaptational Sexuality: She seems to be into girls in this game. Particularly Amy.
- Adaptation Species Change: She is a chipmunk instead of a squirrel.
- Age Lift: While she is 16 years old in canon, she is 24 years old in this game.
- Anguished Declaration of Love: She gives one to Amy in a secret ending.
- Blank White Eyes: In Part 2, when she is possessed by Stich-Lite.
- Death by Origin Story: Sally's entire family is killed, as revealed in her origins.
- Driven to Madness: If you don't make it in time to save Cream from being killed by a mind-controlled Amy, this happens.
- Driven to Suicide: After killing a mind-controlled Amy after she killed Cream, this happens to her.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Amy. The "heterosexual" part may be averted with Sally, however.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Has this after she kills a mind-controlled Amy in Fatal Iron.
Exetior's allies
Sonic
"I'm giving you one last chance, demon. Leave my mind, or die."
The main protagonist of Nightmare Beginning and a supporting character in Continued Nightmare, his body was taken over by Exetior before the events of the game.- Age Lift: He is 23 years old in this game instead of 15 like in canon.
- And I Must Scream: Exetior's possessing his body, and as a result Sonic's trapped within his own mind. Also, an alternate version of him was killed and that Sonic's body is being possessed by Sark.
Negagen
"Just relax, honey..."
A Wave Demon and Exetior's apprentice.- Affably Evil: Considering his interactions with the girls, Negagen can easily be considered this since his methods are deliberately meant to be far less painful than the rest.
- The Dragon: Is Exetior's apprentice.
- Light Is Not Good: He is the lightest colored demon, but he still tries to take down the girls.
- Never Live It Down: The scene where he puts on a girl's dress, that forever marked him as The Dress Up Guy, that is still mentioned by the community to this day. Exeller from Spirits Of Hell even mentions about Negagen staring into him like he is seeing him wearing a dress.
Pervision
"Hmm, how extraordinary... There's clearly activity in this dimension, but I cannot detect any lifeforms. There may be something jamming the signal.'
A Demon of Gap who is one of Exetior's allies.- Black Eyes of Evil: Has these.
- Cyclops: His most prominent feature is his singular eye. Also, it's glowing red.
- Evil Genius: He often makes various experiments to aid Exetior, such as Brodys and Brally. The "evil" part comes from being a demon, though, according to Exetior, it's a Necessary Evil.
Sark and his allies
Sark
"I don't demand too much; only full and unquestioning submission to me."
A Demon of Sharpness who is one of Exetior's allies. He soon betrays Exetior after seeing an alternate timeline where he takes one of Sark's servants away from him.- Black Eyes of Evil: Has these, along with glowing red eyes. Averted for his servants.
- Blood Knight: He enjoys violence a lot, and shows no remorse when being brutal at all.
- Expy: Appearance-wise, he's closer to the original Sonic.Exe than Exetior is, as unlike him, Sark has Tears of Blood. Adding to this, he was colored blue in his original appearance, furthering the resemblance, though the redesign toned that down by making him a paler color.
- Hate Sink: Let's see... He's a Jerkass who treats his own servants like garbage (not to mention he frequently has sex with them or rapes them), disrespects authority, and eventually betrays Exetior to suit his own needs.
- Jerkass: He treats his servants (especially Rosy) very harshly and generally cares little for others.
- Mind Rape: After he was caught, he was mentally tortured by Stich-Lite.
- The Starscream: On both ends of this trope. He betrayed Exetior to suit his own needs, and his own versions of Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman all betrayed him, leading him to kill them.
Sark Tails, Sark Knuckles, and Sark Eggman
Sark's versions of Tails, Knuckles and Eggman.
- All Men Are Perverts: An apparent side effect of their demonizations was that they all became deviant towards the girls. Sark's Cream in particular recalls that Tails actually tried to harass her.
- Didn't Think This Through: Tails and Knuckles legitimately thought they could take on Sark and overthrow him. The end result? They died.
- Mister Exposition: Eggman explained to Sark how the Time Stones work.
- The Starscream: They all betrayed Sark, which led to him killing them off.
- Tears of Blood: Tails and Knuckles both sport these, likely to distinguish them from Exetior's versions of them.
Sark Cream
"And now, master... Would you like to have some fun with me~?"
One of Sark's servants; she frequently fights with Sark Sally over their master's affections.- Adaptational Jerkass: Played straight unlike Exetior's cream.
- Adaptation Personality Change: Unlike canon Cream, who is well-mannered and polite, Sark!Cream is an Alpha Bitch who is rude to everyone except Sark.
- Age Lift: Surprisingly, she's WAY older than canon Cream, at 15 years old.
- Alpha Bitch: She's snobbish and always acts rude to everyone around her, even other demons.
- Attention Whore: She always tries to get her master's attention... with varying results.
- Eye Scream: Her left eye is always closed and bleeding a black goo. It's revealed in Tower of Millenium, which is a non-canon extension of the Nightmare Universe, that she only ever opens it to place a red jewel in that eye in order to amplify her powers. May double as Nausea Fuel
- Hormone-Addled Teenager: In spades. She frequently makes sexual advances on Sark, even when it's made explicitly clear that he doesn't want anything to do with her at times.
- Lady Swears-a-Lot: In most of her appearances, she swore at least once.
- Likes Older Men: If her crush on Sark isn't obvious enough.
Sark Sally
(to Cream) "You already made us look bad."
One of Sark's servants; she has a crush on her master, but she doesn't want to admit it.- Eye Scream: Her eyes are stitched shut and bleeding.
- Not So Above It All: Despite being one of the more mature assassin-girls, she still bullies Rosy and even alerts Sark Cream when she spotted her coming back.
- Only Sane Woman: Compared to Sark Cream and Rosy, she is the most neutral and level-headed of Sark's servants so far, and often has to watch over Sark Cream just in case she makes her and the other servants look bad.
Sark Amy/Rosy
"This is so strange... They're happy... and both so value their Amy... She's the favorite here... While I am despised in my world."
One of Sark's servants.- The Empath: While she can't transmit her own thoughts into other people, she can see into other people's subconscious and bring up traumatic events in their lives. This power is involuntary, and only happens at random.
- Facial Horror: Half of her face is stitched up and decomposed, with exposed wounds.
- Nice Girl: She is very kind and friendly to others.
- Rape as Backstory: Her last memory before she was demonized was Sark brutally raping her.
- Shrinking Violet: She is very shy and nervous, mainly due to being horribly abused and raped by Sark. It's not just him either, as Sark Cream and Sark Sally also bully her.
