Nelgliffe Neogram
One of the Four Great High Priests of Levi Church. He is stationed in Palgas village, helping the townsfolk deal with a mysterious sickness plaguing the village and works on spreading the faith in Levi.
- Affectionate Gesture to the Head: He oftens headpats Chloe on the head, embarrasing her.
- Arc Villain: Of "The Disease of Palgas Village" arc.
- Bait the Dog: He shows up to aid Abel in the village, excessively heaps praise on him, discloses valuable information in an act of benevolence, revealing his past in the churchyard and history with Chloe, all to gain Abel's trust and sympathy. Just to stab him in the back after he deems him Too Dangerous To Live or lost his usefulness to him.
- Bond Villain Stupidity: He has one Levi follower restrain Mea so she won't interfere with executing Abel, yet he's so stupefied when Abel breaks his Arogua shackles and untie his ropes using magic, he never bother using Mea as hostage to force Abel to comply and let himself be killed. Even better, he missed a chance to kill Abel while he's imprisoned, because he wanted to destroy the villagers' image of him.
- Captain Smooth and Sergeant Rough: Nelgliffe is friendly and affable, while Chloe is the stickler to the rules, shows hostility to strangers and chides Nelgliffe for acting friendly with them.
- Cool Old Guy: He's in his 60s from Abel's description of him, loved by the Palgas village's citizens for taking care of their sick and providing them with elixirs, drawing them to the religion of Levi. Even Abel is conflicted with the fact that he belongs to Levi church. Subverted, as he's actually an Evil Old Folks, who is not what people thinks he is.
- Crocodile Tears: He often spills tears easily to manipulate the followers from Palgas village, Abel.. and Chloe to his whims.
- Deadly Hug: He gives Abel a Man Hug after congratulating him on hunting the Live Foggs, but was actually trying to kill him with magic. He fails, as he gets frightened by Abel's high frequency magic circling through his body.
- Didn't See That Coming: He sets up the Livglass recipe paper he handed to Abel to crumble and destroy itself after he reads it, to either prevent Abel from actually curing Chief Heil, or to cover his own track and frame Abel with the theft of the recipe and ingredients, and had Chloe and his men search the Chief's house, intent on destroying the paper. He didn't expect Abel to keep the paper from destroying itself then misplacing it, nor that Mea would find the paper and present it as evidence at the Devil's Trial.. in front of Levi followers who are unaware of his corruption, forcing him to reveal himself.
- Engineered Heroics:
- He had six Levi followers accost Abel, Mea and Elia when they entered Palgas village, so he would come and stop them, to earn Able's trust.Nelgliffe: “Abel-dono is a reasonably skilled magician, but he doesn’t appear to be used to this kind of situation…… It’s hard to find someone easy to manipulate than that. I’ve already laid the groundwork for my previous contacts with Abel.”
- He was the one who summoned the demon that spread the disease afflicting the village, so he would bring more Levi followers to care for the sick, after he 'destroyed' the demon. He then creates the elixir, Livglass, and distribute it, diluted, on small quantities, to keep the villagers dependent on his elixir, while the demon keeps spreading the disease.
- He had six Levi followers accost Abel, Mea and Elia when they entered Palgas village, so he would come and stop them, to earn Able's trust.
- The Face: Abel believes that he's being used by Levi Church in their invasion on Palgas village. He's wrong. He's the leader of the operation.
- The Farmer and the Viper: Chloe jumps in front of him and deflects the 'sacred fire' torch from hitting him, but her clothes are set on fire as a result. When Abel confronts him, he accuses Chloe of being replaced by a devil, and order four Levi followers to execute her on the spot.
- Good Samaritan: He came to the village after hearing of the disease the befell its citizens, stayed to heal them with an elixir that's exclusive to his church, he points Abel to the ingredient and provides him with the recipe and ingredients to heal the village Chief Heil with it, despite his hostility to the church before he fell sick. Only to reveal himself as a Bad Samaritan, who was using Abel to further his own goals, while trying to get rid of him. And when that doesn't work, he frames him for a demon in order to have him killed through the Devil Trial.
- High Priest: One of the Four Great High Priests of Levi Church. He announces it early to Abel during his introduction.
- Hoist by His Own Petard:
- Abel almost inflict this on him after he frees himself. He decides to "resume the trial" by taking hold of the torch with the "sacred flame" using wind magic, then throws it on Nelgliffe to check if he's a devil or not. Chloe ends up Taking the Bullet for him, and the fire catches on her clothes instead.Abel:Now then, let’s resume the devil’s trial. We’ll do it your way. Let’s find out who is a crooked devil with a bad heart.”
- He manages to escape to the roof of a Levi's church. But instead of running away, he decides to to call the power of the god Levi's spear to destroy Abel and the village. Big mistake, since the god Levi wanted to see Abel himself and decided to force himself into the summoning. The resulting battle between Abel and Levi caused Nelgliffe to fall 3-stories high to the ground, be buried under the rubble of the Levi church he was standing on, defeated yet surprisingly still alive.
- Shortly after a defeated Levi leaves, Nelgliffe weakly calls for help and for the elixir, as it seems he contracted the disease his demon spread over the village.
- Abel almost inflict this on him after he frees himself. He decides to "resume the trial" by taking hold of the torch with the "sacred flame" using wind magic, then throws it on Nelgliffe to check if he's a devil or not. Chloe ends up Taking the Bullet for him, and the fire catches on her clothes instead.
- Holy Halo: After Nelgliffe proceeds to reveal the recipe for the elixir Livglass, Abel begins seeing him behind a halo of light, and is moved to tears.
- I'll Pretend I Didn't Hear That: He pretends to forget giving Abel the paper with the Livglass recipe, because only the higher rank priests are allowed to see it, so he could have Abel heal Chief Heil. When Nelgliffe takes control of the Devil Trial against Abel, and holds a piece of the same paper with the recipe, that could prove Abel's innocence: he throws it and stomp on it, and says:Nelgliffe: “I taught Master Abel about it……? Hmmm, I don’t remember this, but well, that’s not the point.”
- Irony: When Chloe shows hesitancy after he tells her to take the lead on the framing and trial of Abel, he gives these questions to test her faith in him. Just guess what he does when she fails:Nelgliffe: “…… You can cooperate, but you don’t want to be the subject? Or…… do you suspect me? That, in the worst-case scenario, I’m going to cut Chloe off and try to escape on my own……?”
- Laser-Guided Karma: He emerges from the church rubble, injured and battered, calling for help. Abel proceeds to detain him as a key witness, until he sees the villagers and Levi followers surrounding him and stops on his tracks. Abel thinks that the Levi followers will help him despite what he did to them.. until he hears Nelgliffe's desperate pleas as he begs them to spare him, as the crowd is furious at him, and begins beating him with stones and wooden sticks. Abel hurries to save him from getting killed, then he's arrested along with his followers who already surrendered to be later deported to the capital for questioning, and gets interrogated.. by the Bishop Peter.
- Like a God to Me: After hearing from Abel of the incident with Marias in the Fage territory, and delivering over 50 Live Fogg contained in bottles, Nelgliffe becomes enamored with Abel. Likening him to Riveran, a messenger angel of Levi, and praises him for stopping Marias's scheme and for helping to save the village with all the Live Fogg to use for the elixir creation, and begins spilling Tears of Joy, and gives him a hug.
- Made of Iron: Fell from a three-stories high church when Levi's Spear fell and crushed it roof to floor, got buried under the rubble of said church, suffered the disease made by his own disease demon and got the tar beaten out of him by the villagers and his followers with stones and wooden sticks. After Abel saved him, he was found to have 8 broken bones, still alive.
- Master Actor: One would be forgiven for calling out Abel for holding the Idiot Ball throughout his story arc, as Nelgliffe pulls off the Good Shepherd image quite well, only the story confirms his true colors when it leads to his side-chapters. He spills Tears of Joy after a follower thanks him for curing her husband, he showers Abel with praise as he sees him examining a patient, he gets Blue with Shock when Abel tells him the disease demon is still alive, to name a few moments.
- Manipulative Bastard: A particularly nasty one:
- As Chloe puts it, he is good at weaving truth into what he wants and let his gullible victims fill in the gaps with what he wants them to believe. If you lie or cheat, you'll fall somewhere. If you hide your identity, you'll lose trust. And what better place to openly reveal your past than a rural area in the boarders?
- His revealing the ingredients of the elixir, Livglass, to Abel is of benefit to him, whether he obtains it or not. If he does obtain it, they'll just keep it in their storage and use their old diluted one to temporary cure the villagers, making them aware of it to increase their dependency, and make Abel commit to the village to make him a Folk Hero. If he doesn't obtain it, they'll comfort the villagers.. AFTER they are done humiliating Abel for his failure, to shatter his confidence and destroy his grip on the world. And to top it all off, the three friendly Levi followers sent with him on the hunting trip.. are actually Professional Killers ordered to kill him and Mea, if he proves Too Powerful to Live for them. Sheesh...
- When that didn't work, and instead ended with Abel bringing enough Live Foggs to cure the entire village and told the village about it, he decides to dispose of Abel. He had his demon cause a fire in the main Levi church, where the Live Fogg was stored, then had Chloe and some of his men accuse Abel of stealing then destroying the Live Foggs, injuring Nelgliffe, and insist that he did it and refuse any attempt to defend himself. Chloe then accuses him for being a demon and initiate a Devil Trial, daring him to take it if he want to prove his innocence. When Abel thought of running away from the village, he runs into Kamla, who secretly tells him that Nelgliffe woke up, and is planning to stop Chloe during the Devil Trial and save him, making Abel comply with his arrest. What Abel doesn't know is, that the Devil Trial is rigged to kill whoever they accuse, and Nelgliffe lied, because he'll be watching Abel's execution from a safe distance. And if that didn't work... He'll summon the weapon of the god Levi, Levi's Spear to destroy Abel, the village and its Levi's followers and run away.
- Near-Villain Victory: He appears, alive and well, after Chloe's sham of a Devil's Trial is foiled, only to take over the trial himself, silences the protesting crowd as he demands to continue with Abel's trial, disregards the paper evidence, has a Levi follower restrain Mea, and orders Chloe to proceed with burning Abel with the fire. Unfortunately for him, Abel wasn't as helpless as he thought he'd be.Nelgliffe: “Silence. We are in the presence of Levi-sama. Without so much noise, everything will be revealed before his mind’s eye. The pursuit of Chloe can be done afterwards. The Devil’s Trial is sacred, so there is no reason to make Levi-sama wait for nothing.”
- No Ontological Inertia: After his arrest, Abel threatened him into summoning his disease demon, and annihilated it on the spot when he summoned it. Doing so lifted the disease curse off the village, and no one needed the elixir Livglass anymore.
- Oh, Crap!: When he sees Abel Breaking the Bonds by using his magic, despite him wearing his Arogua stone shackles. Abel notes that at that moment, Nelgliffe's expression finally changed.
- This Page Will Self-Destruct: He has Kamla hands Abel the ingredints and recipe for Livglass, but the paper is empty! After Abel let his magic flow through it, the writing appear on the paper, but as he began reading it, the paper began to degrade and crumble. Abel stops it with a "Maintain" spell, noting that there are a lot of magic mechanisms implemented to destroy the paper.
- Pragmatic Villainy:
- After Abel over-fishes the Live Fogg creatures for the the elixir, he sets on killing Abel in a way he'll be outed as a demon through the Devil Trial. When Chloe asks why since he blindly trusts Nelgliffe and the best tool to be used, he answers:
Nelgliffe: “I can already see the collapse of the system. The best tool is one that can be used to kill at any time. We can’t sit on this slender rope any longer.”- He frames Abel for injuring him and destroying the Live Fogg supply, has Chloe arrests him on the suspicion of being a demon, to instigate a Devil Trial, and direct the citizens' hatred to Abel, while he keeps Withholding the Cure.
- Prepare to Die: As he prepares to summon Levi's spear to destroy Palgas village:Nelgliffe: “Shudder, and praise forever! The power of the great spear, half of Levi-sama’s body! Let it be your last honor to decay before its power!”
- Quarantine with Extreme Prejudice: Because of the disease spreading and not showing any signs of stopping, he had the Levi followers prevents and advise the citizens from leaving the village, least they spread the disease. It's a lie, as he is controlling the demon spreading the disease, and this is his excuse to prevent anyone from sending a message asking for help.
- Self-Harm: When he was a child, Nelgliffe was trained by Levi's church to keep his emotions from being expressed. When he couldn't control them anymore, he would rub his palms with his thumbs to distract himself. The last time it happened when he was ten years old. After his scheme to kill Abel failed, he tore both skin and flesh off the palm of one of his hands to the point he drew blood, while he was shaking Abel's hand with the other and cheerfully smiling.
- Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: He gives this answer to Chloe, after she suffers a Heroic BSoD from learning the truth behind the Devil Trial. Given how much of a Master Actor he is, it was probably just an act to justify his corruption and to have her comply out of sympathy:Nelgliffe: “…… I don’t like this kind of move either. I was outraged the first time I was informed, and I was even thrown in jail for screaming that it was wrong. However, the world does not revolve around cleanliness …… and to prevent the resurrection of the Great Evil God Kudor, we must harden our hearts. Chloe …… since it’s you who knows of my suffering, I thought you would understand so I told you.”
- Villains Want Mercy: He tries it twice:
- When Abel was about to throw the "sacred fire" torch at him:
Nelgliffe: “Wa-, wait a minute, Abel-dono! You are mistaken! I’m just ……”
Abel: “I’m not going to fall for that anymore! Making fun of people so much!”- When he's surrounded by the Levi followers and villagers who he just tried to kill using Levi. They beat him up with rocks and wooden sticks:
Nelgliffe: “W-wait! No! I’ve been duped. It’s true! I, I’m ……! I understand! I’m going to tell you all about it! So put your arms down, please!” - Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: When Kamla suggests using poison to kill Abel, Nelgliffe shoots the idea down, reasoning that Abel's high frequency magic will most likely detect it, causing him to vomit it out or destroy the poison inside his body.
- Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: He's the Good Shepherd of Levi's church, who'll lead you with a smile, a tear and a praise to your execution, and no one will suspect him as he gives a few diluted elixirs to a village, while holding a storage of it to himself, and keep its citizens dependent on him, because of how much of a Master Actor he is.Abel (narrating): Then it finally dawned on me. From the first time we met …… no, before we met, from the first time I got tangled up with the out-of-character Levi Church, until this moment, that I’ve been dancing on the hand of this guy from the start.
- You Have Failed Me: Subverted. When Chloe calls for the punishment of Augen, Kamla and Sophia for their failure to kill Abel, he tells her there is no need for it, as it is his fault for misjudging the situation.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Contemplates getting rid of Chloe when he feels she's still not comfortable with his cruel and corrupt methods, but also more deluded about him than others. He later turns on her to try to save his own hide.
Chloe
- Adaptation Dye-Job: Has blonde hair in the webnovel, and blue hair in the light novel.
- A Pupil of Mine Until She Turned to Evil: Nelgliffe implies this is why Chloe is hostile to Abel, and that she's responsible for impeding the creation of Livglass. He's lying. He's using Chloe to distract Abel from his own plans to destroy him when he least suspects it.
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Threw herself in the way of a falling lit torch with a fire that should've burned a human to death. Said fire caught in her priestess robes, spread quickly as she futilely rolled on the ground, then was doused with water. All that just got her clothes singed and torn [1] here.
- Et Tu, Brute?: When Nelgliffe accused her of being a devil after the 'sacred fire' burned her, and ordered four Levi followers to execute her, she was astonished.
- Even Evil Has Standards: She agrees to Nelgliffe's ways of trickery and keeping the village suffering from the disease to convert the citizens to Leviism, to an extent. But she's shown to be upset on the thought of resorting to kill two teenagers, even knowing they are spies. Yet she gets angry at Kamla and Sophia for failing to kill them. She also strongly disagree on killing Abel through a Devil Trial, calling it a defilement to a sacred ritual, until Nelgliffe tells her the truth. Subverted as she agrees to frame up Abel and hold the trial herself.
- Head Smack The Idiot: She clubbed one of Levi's followers with her "stupidly large staff" on the head, when he tried justifying accosting Abel, Mea and Elia when they entered Palgas village, to Nelgliffe. Despite the blood flying, he just lost consciousness, and was carried away by his comrades.
- Heroic BSoD: When she learns the truth behind Levi church's Devil Trial from Nelgliffe, she slumps on the floor as she tries to process what she just heard.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: According to Sophia.
- Knight Templar: She completely believes that Levi church and their god are justified in their conquest of the Dinrat Kingdom, to prevent the 'Evil' Goddess Kudor from awakening and destroying their god again, no matter how dirty their hands will get. That's until she learns what Nelgliffe and Levi are really like.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Big time. She's outed for cheating the Devil's Trial in front of a crowd of villagers and Levi followers, the fake 'sacred fire' she wanted to kill Abel with torched her instead, her mentor and father figure turns on her to save his own skin and order her execution, then he summons their god to kill her and everyone there just to dispose of Abel, who then defeats said god after he proves to be a major Evil God. Then she's arrested along with her mentor and the followers, who aren't resisting arrest, let alone bother to.
- Magic Staff: Carries a ridiculously large gold staff. Abel wonders if she's physically stronger than him despite her size.
- Morality Pet: For Levi followers of Palgas village. Seeing Nelgliffe accusing her of being a demon after she's burned by the fake "Levi's sacred flame" and ordering her execution made them realize how twisted their religion may have become.
- Older Than She Looks: Due to her being half-Noir.Chloe: “That’s fine! …… Jeez. I’ll admit that my growth is a little slow because of the blood, but on the inside, I’m already an adult. Please don’t treat me like a child.”
- Parental Abandonment: Orphaned in one of the many inter-wars between the Levi church factions. She was raised in a churchyard that doubled as an orphanage, that Nelgliffe was working in as a priest.
- Pointy Ears: In the webnovel, Abel notes that her ears are 'a little longer than a Norcs''. Which could mean she's a Noir, or half-Noir.
- Red Herring: Exploited by Nelgliffe. Thanks to Chloe's insistence on attacking Abel and showing him hostility, it was made easy for Nelgliffe to win his trust. He exploits it even more, by making Abel believes that Chloe has her own faction intent on destroying him, to keep himself Beneath Suspicion.
- Villainous Breakdown: When Mea barges in on the trial, carrying the Livglass recipe paper that Abel got from Nelgliffe, and explains how Abel got it, proving his innocence. Chloe started swearing and denying ever seeing that paper, and tears it from Mea's hand, only to scatter into pieces for the church members to collect and figure things out, making them realize that something is indeed off with the trial. Surrounded by people's questioning looks, she falls on her knees, her face went pale like a Marren as Abel puts it, hyperventilates, and tears start pouring from her eyes. Abel actually felt sorry for her.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Chloe disappears from the story after Palgas Village is freed from Levi Church. But it's implied that she was arrested along with the Levi followers who surrendered to the villagers after the stunt with Nelgliffe and Levi, and were taken to the royal capital for questioning.
- Woman on Fire: After jumping in front of Nelgliffe, knocking off the torch that Able threw at him with her staff, the fire catches on her priestess robes. The fire quickly spreads on her clothes and body, shocking Levi followers as they watch the 'sacred flame' burning their priestess, as she tries to roll on the ground to smother the flame. When Nelgliffe order the followers to execute Chloe with water spears, Abel manipulates their magic circles to instead douse the flames with water.
Augen, Kamla and Sophia
- Nelgliffe: “I’d like to introduce you these three as your companions in the search for Live Fogg…… How about that? All three of them are still young, but…… they have experience as adventurers, and we decided that they are suitable for the search for Live Fogg. They are motivated and have been under my direct supervision for a long time, so they are three trustworthy people.”
- Assassin Outclassin': Their attempts to kill Abel ended up being foiled by him, with him non the wiser to even a hint of the attempt:
- Augen tried offing him with a Look Behind You while they're attacked by a monster, only for Abel to use Lapides Sword to destroy what could be behind him, without turning around.
- Sophia tries to kill Abel by manipulating the water in his body, disgused as a magic techinque to heal his sour muscles. Kamla stops her, fearing for her life should Abel notice and retaliate.
- The Charmer: Kamla attempts sweet-talking Mea into going to live in the Riveras Kingdom, and maybe convert to Leviism, while the latter is scared stiff and tries to pry herself from his hand on her shoulder. She calls for Abel, who just saw them, and suddenly got between them and split them apart!Abel (narrating): It was kind of irritating to watch.
- Don't Touch It, You Idiot!: Augen and Sophia stops Kamla, after the latter attempts to stop Abel as he prepares an "Abel Ball" spell. The reason Kamla tried that, was when he feared the possibility of Abel losing control of the spell, after hearing Sophia's explaining what he's doing:Sophia:“I think that would wipe out all of us at …….”
Kamla: “No, stop! Stop that sorcery!”
Augen: “C-calm down, Kamla! If you touch brother now, he’ll lose his balance!”
Abel (Narrating): What Sophia said was wrong. To be precise, if it were to go out of control, this entire mountain would disappear cleanly. - Elite Mook: These three were handpicked by Nelgliffe himself, and are acquainted with him, longer than Chloe. They excels at combat, espionage and stealth.
- Fangirl: Sophia behaves like this to Abel, and shows it when she went Motor Mouth on him when he 'showed interest' in Riveras Kingdom and Levi religion. Both Augen and Kamla pulled her away from Abel when they saw him becoming uncomfortable while she tries to reach him with her hand, and Mea pulled Abel away from her, telling him that she might be part of Chloe's group. Given what she and her teammates are, it might be either Villains Wants Heroes or her trying to lure him in to drop his guard.
- Kick the Dog: On their return to Palgas village, Kamla shoves a Levi's follower from the village into a mud puddle, just because he asked if they succeeded in gathering ingredients for the elixirs, because his sick wife is nearing her limit. When Mea gets upset for this, Sophia justifies that as they must report to Nelgliffe as soon as possible.
- Magi Babble: Sophia makes the mistake of asking Abel how his spell "Abel Ball" works, and finds herself receving a Wall of Text worth of explanation, temporarily reducing her into an Empty Shell that answers only: "…… Yes, I understand".
- Minion Shipping: Augen tells Abel that Kamla and Sophia are seeing each other, and wants him to keep it a secret because they're both popular with Levi's followers. That or he's trying to hide why they ran off to think of a way to kill Abel.
- Motor Mouth: When Abel asked for information about the Riveras Kingdom, Sophia went and tried to sell him the Levi religion hoping to get him to convert on the spot:Sophia: “Abel-san is…… helping us to save the people of this village that just happened to stop by, right? It’s not something you can do very often, which I think is very great thing to do! I would say I’m in the same position…… but if I hadn’t been led by Nelgliffe-sama, I might not have come here even if I had known about the village’s predicament…… That’s why I have so much respect for Abel-san! So that …… is one of the aspects of my candidacy as its coterie this time. I’m a little embarrassed to say this, but …… it would be great to be able to pray to Levi-sama with such an Abel-san, and I think it would be a great thing, I, I……”
Abel (narrating): Oh no, this girl, she’s super scary. What, I’m gonna sit with this girl the whole time until we complete the objective? - No Honor Among Thieves: Desperate to impede the hunting mission, Augen tries to destroy the supply of Live Foggs in the night, but is instead viciously attacked by a guard Ortem Abel set just in case. The rest awaken to the racket, and Augen eyes Abel with bloodshot eyes and mallet in his hands. As Kamla and Sophia resolve and ready themselves to aid Augen, Abel accuses Augen for being The Mole trying to sabotage them! Kamla and Sophia look at each other for a moment, change their resolve, and point their weapons at Augen, and knock him out! When they returned to Palgas village, he was imprisoned inside a big Ortem.
- Power Trio:
- The Big Guy: Augen, with his Bald Head of Toughness and Stout Strength, armed with a big wooden mallet. But in reality he's The Brute.
- Bow and Sword in Accord: Kamla, with his Aloof Ally attitude and Only Sane Man position. Who Nelgliffe uses to trick Abel into thinking that the former will save him from the Devil Trial in the last minute.
- White Mage: Sophia fills the role in the hunt for Live Foggs, warning of many demons that uses toxins in the mountain. Also doubles as a Deadly Doctor.
- Professional Killer: Each one of them! They were ordered to kill Abel and Mea, should the former shows any sign that he might becomes a concern to Nelgliffe. From what Chloe heard about them: It won't matter if Abel was proficient in magic if they took him by surprise, and they wouldn't hesitate when they do kill him, and they'll be perfectly calm about it!. Unfortunately for them however..
- Stunned Silence: The three sport this expression, after seeing Abel summons more than a hundred Live Foggs that were hiding, using Hamelin's ability to call monsters, and calls the three to help him hunt them.
- This Is Gonna Suck: The three of them begin acting shifty and suspicious, after Abel defeats Dantalion, manages to find Liv Foggs, creates a way to track Liv Foggs locations, resulting in hunting a lot to create enough elixirs to cure the entire village. They beg him to stop or slowdown, but they end up letting him hunt more, foiling the true mission they were sent for. Realizing they have no other choice, they decide to kill him.
- Trick Arrow: Kamla, when he faced Dantalion, he shot an arrow from his crossbow. The arrow, made from special material that increases elasticity with magic, was inscribed with a magic formula.. for explosive magic. Unfortunately, Dantalion reflected it back at him and the arrow struck his foot and was going to explode. Fortunately, Abel breaks the arrow with his magic, disabling it.
Levi's Followers in Palgas Village
Members of Levi's church brought from the Riveras Kingdom by Nelgliffe. They were tasked with healing the sick in Palgas village after Nelgliffe defeated the demon spreading the disease.
- Church Police: They patrol the village, all dressed in the standard Levi blue garb, who can gang up on, grab, surround and yell at any stranger entering the village, for being a "Kudor-worshiping infidel". They even take it to extreme levels when they arrests Abel for as part of a Frame-Up, setting a Devil Trial for him with without a proper trial.
- Even Evil Has Standards: They knew from the beginning that they were staging an invasion on the village for their kingdom, but after seeing Nelgliffe framing Chloe for being a demon, along with Levi's total disregard of their lives, they chose to surrender to the villagers after Levi forsaken them. And ended up blameing Levi for the abuse of the Devil' Trial.
- From Nobody to Nightmare: They just came to help the citizens of Palgas village, and turned the Kudor church there into a sickbay for treating them. But as number of sick people kept increasing, they turned the church into a Levi church for his healing blessing, and began tearing down buildings to build more churches of Levi to house more citizens for treatments. The followers kept increasing, and soon the village fell into their clutches.
- Heel Realization: After seeing their High Priest's corruption, abusing the ritual and his disciple, faking a ritual for an Attempted Murder, and summoning their supposed god to kill them and their god getting defeated by a Child Mage, Riveras' own Levi followers didn't have a problem turning on Nelgliffe and surrendering to the villagers.
- Hypocrite: They deflect any of Abel attempts to point out how one-sided the Devil's Trial is on him, by accusing him of insulting their religion and implying that Chloe is abusing the trial, when they are using the trial to kill him.Levi's follower 1: “Y-, you rude bastard! It is in principle to do this with holy fire, with the help of Levi-sama, you know! And of the people, you’re saying that Chloe-sama will break it!”
Levi's follower 2: “She would never do such a shameless thing! That’s enough with the insults!” - Miscarriage of Justice: Invoked. Chloe initiates the Devil Trial by stating that there were eyewitnesses seeing a demon using chantless magic, and pinning it on Abel. Said eyewitnesses are Levi's followers working for Nelgliffe and Chloe.
- Not What I Signed on For: Once the Levi's "sacred flame" burned Chloe, the crowd was shocked and frozen on disbelief to what they're seeing. And when Nelgliffe ordered Chloe's execution, the protests and accusations increased in volume but he didn't care. But then they began shouting at Nelgliffe and what he's about to do, when he began summoning Levi's spear, and then his whole arm:“It’s not true, is it? Nelgliffe-sama, please explain yourself……. Ple-, please.”
“Ne-, Nelgliffe-sama! We have not heard that much! What the hell is going on ……”
From here and there, followers screamed and voiced their disappointment. But Nelgliffe did not show any sentiment or reaction to them either. - Secret-Keeper: 11 of them, including Augen, Kamla, Sophia and Chloe know the truth about the Devil Trial, and are stirring the other followers into calling for Abel's trial.
Fleur
- Fleur: “Thank you …… my father, please help him.”
- All of the Other Reindeer: She and her father got the stigma of the villagers for refusing the free care of Levi's church from the disease, and their treatment of her took its tool on her mental health. Even her father's servants left the mansion to not lose the benefits offered or get the same treatment.
- Beautiful All Along: Abel notes that her face and complexion both became healthy after her father was cured from the disease, and her red hair became brighter than it was. She can't help but watch Abel become flustered whenever she look him in the eyes, and laughs upon seeing Mea's frown when she walks on them.
- Brutal Honesty: In the light novel's short story "Digesta the lesion", she blurts out her discomfort towards a tunic Abel made from the remains of two demons he defeated, despite her attempts to hold it.
