Survival Game Club

Tropes shared by the club

  • Ass-Kicking Pose: Each of them have a short montage of drawing their guns and doing a badass pose whenever they fight.
  • Elaborate Underground Base: The survival game clubroom is decrepit-looking on the outside, but has a really spacious underground facility under it. The narrator lampshades this and states it's best to not to think about it too much.

     Momoka

Momoka Sonokawa

Voiced by: Ayaka Ohashi

A 1st-year transfer student to Aogiri Academy. Beneath her cute exterior lies one shallow, vain, and petty girl.

  • A-Cup Angst: An occasional source of spite toward Maya.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: She becomes a strikingly good looking guy thanks to Kayo's cosplay expertise and the first thing she does is to flirt with the girls in their school. She later finds out how some girls react when a hot guy gives them attention.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Although she looks like your usual Ordinary Highschool Student, inside Momoka's got a vindictive streak a mile wide, and what's more, she never lets things go without getting some measure of revenge on the party that wronged her.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Even though her eyes are more red than pink.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Momoka will do anything to win, even including sacrificing her own team mates and shooting unarmed or surrendering opponents. This is what Miou likes about her.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Momoka's revenge frequently goes overboard. For example, Miou's fangirls unleash some standard schoolgirl bullying tactics on her - they put tacks in her shoes, shove her desk out of the way during lunch, and toss her bag out a window and into the yard. In response, Momoka puts mountains of tacks in their shoes, smashes their desks to pieces, throws their bags in the school incinerator, and then cuts up their uniform skirts for good measure. And this is after they apologized, mind.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Mokarin, courtesy of her mother. After hearing it, Miou rubbed it in her face until she agreed to join the club’s morning practice.
  • Inconsistent Coloring: Just about every tankobon cover uses a different shade of red for her hair. The anime, in contrast, maintains it at a fairly consistent reddish magenta.
  • It's All About Me: Proudly insists toward Yammy that you should live for yourself, and only view others only by their use to you.
  • Large Ham: Momoka tends to react in this way to anything she finds unusual, especially with the way the survival club members act.
  • Odd Friendship: Surprisingly, she gets along with Fried Chicken Lemon, the otaku she challenges in a video game in episode 4. While she still acts like a jerk towards him, she is shown to heed his advice.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: It's just an act though. See the above tropes for more details.
  • Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: She is selfish, greedy and vindictive and is the main character.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She can't stand praying mantises.

     Miou

Miou Ootori

Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama

A 3rd-year student who was held back, and the president of the Survival Game Club.

  • Born Lucky: In the fourth OVA she finds 1 million yen, has a rare butterfly land on her, and keeps getting double-yolk eggs in cooking class. Then it turns out that for her this is a bad day!
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Miou's thought processes are sometimes out of sync with reality, like spontaneously asking why our teeth squeak when we eat spinach during the student council meeting.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Miou is shown brandishing her pistols right away in the first episode to protect Momoka from a creepy pervert.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Miou is very popular with the ladies of the student body, to say the least.
  • Guns Akimbo: She uses a pair of airsoft Desert Eagles.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: She reports to the student council that the Survival Game Club has caused several property damages, injuries, and warnings from the police. When asked for details, she says that the problems have already been resolved through copious amounts of cash.

     Maya

Maya Kyoudou

Voiced by: Lynn

A 2nd-year student who is a part-time gravure idol.

  • Butt-Monkey: Maya's usually the first one to go down, and has plenty of embarrassing things happen to her. The one exception where she's the last to survive ends with the opponents shooting off her clothes instead.
  • Clothing Damage: Suffers this during the survival game between members of a private school for rich girls, who turn out to be her fangirls.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She once asked Momoka to help her overcome her dislike of natto so she could eat it in a commercial. Spiteful over the natto being advertised to increase Maya's already sizeable bust, Momoka puts her through Training from Hell until she becomes outright terrified of natto.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: The airsoft team the survival club plays against in episode 8 are obsessed with Maya to the point of wanting to marry her and have children together.
  • The Generic Girl: By the story's own admission, she doesn't have much presence compared to the other club members.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Actually finds Momoka's experience with the perverted photographers in episode 8 amusing. Then she gets to meet her own Psycho Lesbian fanclub in the next segment. Who are even worse than they are.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Justified as she is a gravure model as well, though a bikini top and short shorts probably isn't an ideal airsoft combat outfit.
  • Nice Girl: She the nicest of the group, usually thinking of helping others. This often leads to her getting taken out when the others pull a dirty trick.
  • Nice Guys Finish Last: Several times her kindness leads her to trusting her teammates who then immediately double cross her.
  • Only Sane Man: She doesn't have any real quirk to her personality besides being extremely nice and usually calls out the odder moments of the group.
  • Poke the Poodle: Her idea of cruel orders in OVA 6's King's Game is to ask for massages.
  • Running Gag: Maya being the first one to be taken out. Also, she always gets shot on her breasts.
  • Training from Hell: Momoka subjects her to this in order to get her to be used to natto. She ends up having a PTSD over anything natto-related.

     Urara

Urara Kasugano

Voiced by: Rumi Ōkubo

A 1st-year student with an extreme crush on Miou (later Momoka).

  • A-Cup Angst: Like Momoka, she's jealous of Maya's assets.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Sweet and cute on the outside, violently jealous in the inside. In the second episode, the narrator points out that it's largely because of her that the club is stuck with just four members prior to Momoka, despite Miou being ridiculously popular with the student body. She does lighten up on this after Momoka does some payback on her, and instead diverts much of her attention to her instead.
  • Black Comedy Rape: Gropes and assaults Momoka more than once.
  • Bulletproof Human Shield: Momoka uses her in this way twice.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: First to Miou, then to Momoka.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Urara accidentally breaks the handle on the toilet in episode 5 after grabbing it a bit too hard.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Momoka comments that she looks sweet and cute in episode 2A, before finding out how cruel she can be.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her magenta hair is tied into twintails.
  • Guns Akimbo: She uses a pair of Glock 26s.
  • Lethal Chef: Momoka uses her cooking to lose weight because it causes vomiting as soon as she takes a bite. In the fifth OVA she puts screws and eggshells in her biscuits because it's said girls are often lacking iron and calcium.
  • Love at First Punch: She swoons over Momoka after she gets beaten up by the latter. It turns out that she's a masochist.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Urara has the grip strength of an Eastern Lowland Gorilla, can descend a building by smashing hand- and footholds into it, regularly leaves craters in walls with her punches, and has a back strength of 600 kg. She is also the second shortest of the club.
  • Psycho Lesbian: She's obsessed with Momoka to a (hilariously) deranged level, taking her abuse with a lot of pleasure and being excited by the idea of being stuck in a barrel with her!
  • Serious Business: Aside from airsoft, she doesn't want anyone to see what she left in the toilet because it would be unfitting for a pure girl.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Her reaction to Momoka's abuse.
  • Verbal Tic: She often ends her sentences with "-desu wa", typically associated with high-class ladies.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In the anime, her voice drops a couple of octaves when she's angry.

     Kayo

Kayo Goutokuji

Voiced by: Nao Tōyama

A 1st-year student more passionate toward cosplay than survival games.

  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: While she's okay with the gun-related shenanigans her clubmates engage in, she's mostly in for the excuse to cosplay her favorite dresses. Jill Valentine's get-up from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis seems to be a particular favorite of hers, and the one she most uses during club "shootouts".
  • Crazy-Prepared: She is shown carrying a large bag of cosplay-related stuff when the student council president claims she's into cosplay like her (while just wearing a mask). She makes the student council dress in outfits that would go well with the mask.
  • Guns Akimbo: Kayo uses a pair of Mac-11s.
  • Otaku: Aside from cosplay, she's also an anime otaku, evidenced when she states that while she hasn't played the video game Momoka and Fried Chicken Lemon are playing, she has watched the anime version of it, and even owns some of its merchandise.
  • The Stoic: Kayo rarely emotes, and when she does have an extreme one, she usually lets her guns speak for her.
  • Teen Genius: She has an I.Q. of 160 and is usually the one to spout off facts about a situation when the announcer isn't.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: A creepy looking monster can be seen running around in the crowd when Momoka is meeting Miou and the other club members in town. No one seems to notice or care about it. It later turns out to be Kayo who says she created a ghillie suit. Momoka does point out that the color defeats the purpose of the suit it since it's red instead of green and would stand out in a field. However, since nobody noticed her while she was wearing it, then it works.

     Platy

Platy

The club mascot.

  • Puzzling Platypus: He’s ostensibly a platypus, but he’s bright yellow, bipedal and completely terrestrial.
  • Team Pet: Of the Survival Game Club. How he wound up hanging out with the club is not mentioned.
  • Toothy Bird: Although platypodes are mammals, they do not have teeth in their beak, like this one shows when grinning.

     Sakura-sensei

Ena Sakura

Voiced by: Yui Horie

The club adviser for the Survival Game Club

  • Adult Child: Often acts like this.
  • The Fool: In her introduction in episode 3, she unwittingly burns herself, runs into a tree, then has a pack of stray dogs chasing after her. She later picks up the hornet nest that her club just knocked out of a tree, and then pokes it open.
  • The Millstone: The club is terrified of her because she continuously screws them over with her thoughtless decisions.
  • Sensei-chan: She's childish and kinda stupid. She's also a teacher and the Survival Game Club's adviser.
  • Too Dumb to Live: She insists that hornets are just bigger bees, and so pokes open their nest because she thinks it has honey inside.

Other Characters

     Kazue

Kazue Sonokawa

Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue

Momoka's mother

  • Action Mom: She can hold her own in a gunfight, and is pretty good.
  • Doting Parent: She spoils her daughter, much to Momoka's embarrassment.
  • Logical Weakness: The only time she is "defeated" on-screen is when she runs out of ammunition. Revolvers only hold so many shots and speedloaders are quite bulky making it difficult to carry very many of them.
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: She uses a customized revolver, and is perhaps the best fighter in the show.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Unlike her daughter, she's a genuinely caring person, if a bit extreme in her methods.
  • Serious Business: She points a gun at her daughter for not eating her broccoli.

     Yayoi

Yayoi Isurugi

Voiced by: Eriko Matsui

The Student Council President, who has a grudge against Miou.

  • Butt-Monkey: Her attempts to take down Miou always backfire, and in the final episode even the Vice-President turns against her.
  • Mistaken for Gay: By the end of her segment in episode 6 the students are all convinced that she and Miou are going out.

     Fried Chicken Lemon
