Nikko Dream Monkeys — Newcomer Set

Manaka Mizusawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_visual_notxt_manaka_mizusawa.png
#1 — Left Wing
Voiced by: Riku Masuda (Japanese), Bryn Apprill (English)

The protagonist of Pride of Orange. After her interest is piqued by a Nikko Dream Monkeys flyer, Manaka convinces the Embroidery Club to try out the sport and immediately falls in love with it.

  • Epic Fail: Her attempt to play goalie against Yu goes horribly, only winning the challenge because her enthusiasm in the face of failure distracts Yu just enough to ring a shot off the post of the net.
  • Genki Girl: She is never short on energy.
  • The Heart: She is the emotional center of both her original group of friends and the entire Dream Monkeys team. This is best seen when she defuses a brewing argument between Riko and Yu when the latter insists on being the sole offensive threat against the Ice Bucks.
  • Hot Springs Episode: She has multiple hot spring scenes, which are Justified due to her family owning the hot spring; she and Ayaka are set to inherit it when they become adults.

Riko Saginuma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_visual_notxt_riko_saginuma.png
#24 — Center (Assistant Captain)
Voiced by: Saika Kitamori (Japanese), Kayli Mills (English)

The daughter of former Dream Monkeys player Kenji Saginuma, Riko attends the Dream Monkeys' trial class and quickly joins Manaka's circle of friends.

Yu Kiyose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_visual_notxt_yu_kiyose.png
#33 — Right Wing
Voiced by: Satomi Hongo (Japanese), Ryan Bartley (English)

The Under-16 MVP of Japanese women's hockey. Yu abruptly quits hockey after having a falling out with Kushiro Snow White, only to be pulled back into the sport by the Dream Monkeys.

  • 10-Minute Retirement: She swears off of hockey after quitting Snow White, but just so happens to move to Nikko, where Yuko and the Dream Monkeys reignite her love for the game.
  • The Ace: She was a U-16 MVP before quitting Snow White. She is widely regarded as the Dream Monkeys' greatest scoring threat and is defended against as such.
  • Always Someone Better: Invoked in her falling-out with Snow White; she mentions that they may be the best in Japan with their play, but that means nothing relative to the rest of the world.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: She tries to justify leaving hockey by claiming that the sport has robbed her of opportunities to enjoy more girlish activities.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: She almost single-handedly causes the Dream Monkeys to lose against the Ice Bucks. The team takes it in stride, especially since Yu did eventually learn to trust them.
  • Team Spirit: Her character arc is learning to have faith in her teammates and to use her talents to elevate them instead of berating them. Once she gets over her pride, she becomes a deadly playmaker on top of an excellent goal-scorer since everyone's focus on her leaves Manaka and Riko open for shots.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She gets called out by Coach Suzuki of the Ice Bucks after her attempts to do everything herself directly lead to two goals against and an elbowing penalty.

Ayaka Mizusawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_visual_notxt_ayaka_mizusawa.png
#10 — Left Defense
Voiced by: Mayu Sagara (Japanese), Lizzie Freeman (English)

Manaka's younger sister who worries about keeping up with the rest of the Dream Monkeys.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: She is Manaka's little sister and a year younger than the rest of the cast which, combined with her small stature, sees her treated as the cute mascot of the team. This carries over to Smile Princess, where she's the only middle-schooler in the game.
  • Can't Catch Up: Episode 4 focuses on her concerns regarding her ability to physically keep up with her sister and friends. Everyone bands together to help her pass the physical test to become a part of the Dream Monkeys.
  • Changing of the Guard: She becomes the president of the Embroidery Club when the rest of the main cast moves on to high school.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She ties her hair into pigtails which highlight her youth relative to the rest of the cast.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Inverted; aside from having a slightly similar eye color, she looks nothing like Manaka.
  • Training Montage: There is a very brief one in Episode 4 as she attempts to build her physical stamina in time for the skating test.

Naomi Takagi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_visual_notxt_naomi_takagi.png
#88 — Right Defense
Voiced by: Asuka Shioiri (Japanese), Julia Gu (English)

Riko's best friend, who left hockey for figure skating in the past. She is convinced by Riko to return to the sport.

  • Fangirl: She is a huge fan of Coach Suzuki of the Ice Bucks.
  • Heroic BSoD: Naomi is mentally shaken in the immediate aftermath of Riko's injury and plays so badly that Yoko is forced to bench her. She gathers her resolve in the intermission and is ready to play again in the next period.
  • In-Series Nickname: She is referred to as "Nao" by Riko.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She is the more level-headed, sarcastic Blue to Riko's energetic Red.

Kaoruko Yanagida

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_visual_notxt_kaoruko_yanagida.png
#15 — Goaltender
Voiced by: Yurika Moriyama (Japanese), Morgan Garrett (English)

A longtime friend of Manaka and Ayaka who is a bit shy when it comes to conveying her feelings.

  • Curtains Match the Window: She has pink hair and pink eyes.
  • Instant Expert: Kaoruko's friends nominate her to become their goalie largely due to Kaoruko playing the position a few times in soccer. Everyone finds out that it's not that simple.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Yoko points out that her weakness as a goaltender is her inability to communicate with her teammates, a flaw that is placed front and center when the girls decide to play volleyball and Kaoruko's team performs miserably. Manaka notes that Kaoruko has a calming aura and just needs to verbalize what she's feeling, which fixes the issue.

Nikko Dream Monkeys — Coaches and Senior Set

Yoko Matsunaga

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/visual_matsunaga.png
Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu (Japanese), Corey Pettit (English)

Coach of the Dream Monkeys and former hockey player herself, Yoko plans to increase hockey's popularity in Japan by fielding a competitive team that can also put on idol performances.

  • Batman Gambit: She leaves her pen at Yu's house after initially failing to convince her to join the Dream Monkeys, figuring that Yu will come to the rink to return it and be inspired to join the team after seeing the Dream Monkeys practice. It works.
  • Uncanny Valley Makeup: She cakes makeup on her face in preparation for television interviews, which has her compared to a clown among other things.

Sou Sato

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/visual_sou_sato.png
Voiced by: Yoshiaki Hasegawa (Japanese), Stephen Fu (English)
Yoko's assistant, who takes her shenanigans in stride.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": For someone claiming to be "Kirifuri's Jim Carrey", his attempt to act as if Yu is a stranger visiting the Dream Monkeys' rink is over-the-top awful. Fortunately, he does enough to convince Yu to enter.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He frequently plays the Straight Man to Yoko's crazy suggestions and aspirations.

China Yoneyama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_dm07.png
#16 — Left Wing
Voiced by: Hisako Tōjō (Japanese), Caitlyn Elisabeth (English)

Juri Kikuchi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_dm08.png
#19 — Center (Captain)
Voiced by: Ruriko Aoki (Japanese), SuzAnne DeCarma (English)

  • Advertised Extra: She is the most prominent of the Senior Set members, but still only has a handful of notable moments. She tells Ayaka how to pass the 100-lap test, reveals the dance that the Dream Monkeys are expected to perform, and pushes Manaka to give a speech before their first game.
  • Hidden Depths: Juri loves creating art.
  • Supporting Leader: Juri is the team's captain, a title typically given to either the best player or the strongest leader of a hockey team, yet she has very few scenes. She is satisfied with helping out the younger members of the team.

Shino Ukita

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_dm09.png
#11 — Right Wing
Voiced by: Aina Suzuki (Japanese), Helena Walstrom (English)

  • Advertised Extra: There is a portion of the game against Tomita Phoenix where she plays on a line with Manaka and Yu. Beyond that, she doesn't have any noteworthy scenes in Pride of Orange.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Two artworks show Shino playing with a bird, while a third features a cat resting in her lap.
  • Super Gullible: She is said to be easily deceived.

Rura Hirano

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_dm10.png
#3 — Left Defense and Goaltender
Voiced by: Eriko Matsui (Japanese), Natalie Van Sistine (English)

Minato Shishiushi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_dm11.png
#7 — Right Defense (Assistant Captain)
Voiced by: Shizuku Hoshinoya (Japanese), Ashely Biski (English)

Mona Fujishiro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_dm12.png
#30 — Goaltender
Voiced by: Kurumi Takase (Japanese), Shara Kirby (English)

  • Advertised Extra: Mona informs Manaka that she'll have to memorize the rulebook and — being a goaltender — is present in a flashback where Yoko discusses Maya's shooting tendencies. Beyond that, she doesn't do anything noteworthy.

    Kushiro Snow White

Atsumi Kawakami

Voiced by: Hibiku Yamamura (Japanese), Krystal LaPorte (English)

The coach of Snow White and former teammate of Yoko Matsunaga.

  • Friendly Rivalry: She and Yoko are former teammates that are now coaches of opposing teams. They are close enough that when Yu quits Snow White and moves to Nikko, Atsumi gives Yoko a call so that Yoko can attempt to recruit her into the Dream Monkeys.

Eri Yamanaka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_sw04.png
#6 — Left Defense (Captain)
Voiced by: Suzuko Mimori (Japanese), Christie Cate (English)

Left-handed defenseman and captain of Snow White.

  • Dislikes the New Guy: Eri's teammates accuse her of disliking Maya when the latter joins Snow White. Eri doesn't have a problem with Maya, but rather the team's over-reliance on her.
  • History Repeats:
    • Yu blows up at Snow White for their terrible teamwork and leaves the team. When the team picks up Maya, Eri begins getting frustrated at the team sitting back and letting Maya do everything, which gets Eri accusations of being jealous.
    • Like Yu in the game against the Ice Bucks, Eri ignores what everyone else suggests and tries to do too much herself which leads to trouble. In this case, Eri decides to keep the puck to burn some time off of Maya's penalty instead of sending it down the ice, resulting in the Dream Monkeys stealing it and setting up their power play. Unlike Yu's bad plays which led to goals against, Snow White gets it together and successfully kills the penalty.
  • Heartfelt Apology: Once the Championship B finals is confirmed to be Snow White vs Dream Monkeys, Eri begins to make attempts to reconnect with Yu and, during the second intermission of the game itself, pulls Yu aside and apologizes for not listening to her. Yu likewise apologizes for being pushy and selfish, which inspires Eri to go back to her own teammates and apologize for the same behavior.
  • Hidden Depths: Eri is apparently a Toku fan, as one artwork shows her proudly displaying newly-purchased Henshin Hero Blu-Rays.
  • The Leader: She is the captain of Snow White.
  • The Load: She was more than happy to lean heavily on Yu prior to their falling-out. After Yu leaves and Maya takes her place, she learns her lesson and is less than pleased that her teammates have not.
  • Tomboy: She loves hockey so much that it is listed as her official "like" in her Smile Princess profile, she is a Tokusatsu fan, and one of her cards shows that she is embarrassed to wear a more traditionally-feminine dress.
  • Unmoving Plaid: Zigzagged with her casual skirt. Her animated portrait in the game has the pattern on the skirt fold somewhat-realistically, but her static portrait on her Rare card (which is used on this page) is guilty of having the pattern overlaid onto her artwork.

Maya Walker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sh_visual_maya_walker.png
#19 — Center (Assistant Captain)
Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka (Japanese), Katelyn Barr (English)

A Canadian hockey prodigy who is brought to Japan after Snow White falls out of Championship A.

  • Demoted to Extra: As the main story of Smile Princess is about building Team Japan, Maya obviously has less of a role; in gameplay, she appears as a generic Mook for Team Canada (albeit the only player on the team to have a full name) and is not recruitable. That said, she and Ellen Lee would have been the main opponents for Team Japan had the game finished its story.
  • Gratuitous English: Her first spoken line is "What's wrong?" in English, and she frequently exclaims "Okay!" when she prepares to make a play.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: How does one replace the best U-16 player in Japan? By snagging a player of similar skill from Canada, of course. Because of this, Snow White doesn't actually learn anything from Yu leaving.
  • Unnecessary Roughness: Maya plays about as physical of a style as can be allowed in women's youth hockey. If all else fails, she has no qualms about throwing an actual bodycheck, even at the expense of a penalty.

Seiko Kuga

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_sw01.png
#15 — Left Wing
Voiced by: Aina Aiba (Japanese), Rachelle Heger (English)

  • Sweet Tooth: Her official profile in Smile Princess states that she likes sweets.

Yuka Iihara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_sw02.png
#14 — Center
Voiced by: Miku Itō (Japanese), Maddie Matsumoto (English)

  • Badass Bookworm: She is a hockey player that loves complicated books.
  • Beach Episode: One of her UR cards depict her in swimwear near a swimming pool.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Her casual attire consist of a black frilly dress and hair ribbon, along with black tights. Even her swimwear is frilly and fits the theme.
  • Hidden Depths: According to her ''Smile Princess' website profile, she appears confident but has a number of complexes.
  • Selfie Fiend: One of Yuka's UR cards depict her taking a selfie at a cafe.

Sachie Kaibara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_sw03.png
#10 — Right Wing
Voiced by: Ayasa Goto (Japanese), Cat Protano (English)

  • Fangirl: She is deep into Idol culture, with two artworks depicting Sachie decked in the gear of an idol (or idol group) named "Ichigo".
  • The Heart: As noted on both her ''Smile Princess' website and in-game descriptions, she dislikes pointless conflicts as opposed to her more competitive teammates. Fittingly, more than half of her higher-leveled cards are of the Mind attribute, which is represented by a heart.

Ema Yoshiike

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_sw05.png
#5 — Right Defense
Voiced by: Sora Tokui (Japanese), Analesa Fisher (English)

  • Competition Freak: Implied. On top of being a hockey player, artworks depict her studying Shogi strategies and competing in other board games.
  • Gamer Chick: She is a guildmaster in an MMORPG.
  • Older Than They Look: She is a second-year, despite her Girlish Pigtails and short stature.
  • Years Too Early: In one of her Smile Princess quotes, she states that the player is 100 years too early to beat her in a board game.

Rio Teruya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sh_visual_rio_teruya.png
#1 — Goaltender
Voiced by: Eri Ozeki (Japanese), Christina Costello (English)

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Rio is the only Japanese player from Pride of Orange that is not recruitable at all in Smile Princess.

    West Tokyo Ice Rabbits

Mami Ono

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_visual_notxt_mami_ono.png
#?? — Left Wing
Voiced by: Yoshino Aoyama (Japanese), Michelle Marie (English)

Manaka's close friend, who eventually moves to Tokyo and joins the West Tokyo Ice Rabbits.

  • Advertised Extra: Her artwork on the Pride of Orange official website is in a similar style to that of the main characters, but she only appears in four out of twelve episodes.
  • The Ghost: Mami's team and teammates are only vaguely alluded to in Pride of Orange, largely being fleshed out in Smile Princess.
  • Put on a Bus: She moves away from Manaka and the rest of her friends at the end of Episode 3, though she comes back for a visit in Episode 10.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the one game she played with Manaka and the rest of her longtime friends, she — like everyone else — is a total newbie that barely knows how to play. When she visits Nikko after having played with the Ice Rabbits, she rips a shot past Kaoruko that wows everyone.

Karen Lee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_irt55fc0tnls.png
#?? — Center
Voiced by: Kurumi Wakamatsu

  • Always Identical Twins: She has a twin sister, Ellen Lee, who remained with the Canadian national team. From what can be seen of Ellen (since the game ended service before she was introduced), she is visually identical to Karen aside from styling her hair in a single bun above her crown.
  • Anime Chinese Girl: She hits a number of stereotypes, with dark hair tied into buns, the top of her regular dress resembling traditional Chinese wear, and a separate piece of artwork featuring Karen in a Qipao.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Karen was born from a Japanese mother and a Chinese-Canadian father.

Mio Yanagisaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_ire6wdd5iklv.png
#?? — Left Defense
Voiced by: Ayari Takato

Misaki Jinguji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_irody4slbex7.png
#?? — Right Defense
Voiced by: Nanae Kojima

Saya Houjou

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pic_chara_irulkrevpetw.png
#?? — Goaltender
Voiced by: Mai Mochizuki

  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Aside from what comes with the territory of being a female hockey player who likes glamorous clothing, one artwork shows Saya getting serious over a light gun game.
  • Gyaru Girl: Saya has blonde hair and wears much more stylish clothing than anyone else at the time of her reveal, implying this archetype.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her flirtatous appearance, Saya is said to have a stubborn streak and can get serious at times.
