Characters / Pokémon Crossing: The Hawkwinds
aka: Pokemon Crossing Fly Me To The Moon The Hawkians

Go To

An influential family of eagles who hail from Rustboro City.

Tropes fitting two or more Hawkwinds:

  • Always Someone Better: Apollo is this to Frank: while both defeated the Elite Four in a region, Apollo was able to beat the past Champion while Frank couldn't.
  • Badass Family: All Hawkwind seen on-screen train fully-evolved Pokémon, and one of them is the regional Champion. Frank also defeated the Sinnoh Elite Four, but wasn't able to overthrow the champion.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: The entire family is much more screwed up than they let on. Don is a serial adulterer with several bastard children, Amelia is constantly cheated on yet refuses to get a divorce, Frank is a chain smoker who lets his trauma dominate his life, and Apollo is frequently harassed by both the media and annoying fangirls.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: Both Apollo and Frank are fond of drinking whiskey, fitting their masculine nature.
  • Family Relationship Switcheroo: Frank isn't Apollo's cousin, he's actually his paternal half-brother, and the result of a family affair. Don kept this quiet to keep up appearances in certain parts of Hoenn.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Frank and Apollo, "first cousins", actually half-brothers, are Hawkwinds and both gay. Celia, another Hawkwind bastard, is implied to be gay as well.
  • Musical Theme Naming: The family gets their last name from the British space rock band.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: Apollo is the Noble (a distinguished regional champion with a steady love life), while Frank is the Rogue (an aggressive traumatized Pokémon trainer with a messy love life). Their love interests apply too: Wolfgang is a polite journalist while Rooney is a somewhat-aloof League challenger.
  • Sibling Team: After the family switcheroo is revealed, Frank and Apollo become one of these: a pair of half-brothers who fight together.
  • Signature Mon: The entire family is associated with Skarmory, including the illegitimate members.
  • Species Surname: The Hawkwinds are a family of eagles.

Don Hawkwind

The owner of the tech giant Hawkwind Corp, with a lot up his sleeves.

  • A Family Affair: One of his countless affairs is with Tatiana, his own sister-in-law.
  • Archnemesis Dad: He's Apollo's and Frank's father, and is responsible for both Cottage and Pastel.
  • Big Bad: He's the one who's behind both evil teams, causing most of the trouble in the main story.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: On the surface, he's a hardworking family man whose CEO of one of Hoenn's biggest companies. In reality, he's an extremely manipulative chessmaster whose backing two criminal organizations.

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He's the head of the Hawkwind company and the one responsible for Pastel and Cottage wreaking havoc on the Hoenn region.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: While he's fine with Cottage and Pastel causing chaos around Hoenn, he genuinely cares about Apollo and draws a line at Team Cottage sending Apollo to the hospital.
  • Executive Excess: He's the owner of a large tech company and comes with plenty of hedonism to match (smoking large cigars, drinking plenty of sake, and sleeping with at least thirty-six women).
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Like his legitimate son, he uses Steel-types (owning a Bronzong and Empoleon).
  • Grey-and-Gray Morality: Has some questionable morals i.e. frequently dismissing both his son and nephew, lashing out at employees. However he's nice to Coco and the boys by giving them fossil Pokémon. However he's only nice to Coco because he's having an affair with her, and the boys so they can trust him.
  • Light Is Not Good: He's a pale yellow eagle in a lavender suit, and is a morally corrupt boss who constantly cheats on his wife along with being the main antagonist of the story.
  • Lipstick Mark: Several chapters note lipstick on his collars. It's later stated that he's having countless affairs.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He's manipulating both Judy and Dobie by giving them information on the other teams, not telling them that he's behind both evil teams.
  • Mean Boss: He's a CEO who yells at his employees, most of his relatives, and rarely acknowledges his bastard children.
  • Original Character: He's not based on any existing Animal Crossing character. However, his colors are based on Unovan Braviary.
  • Parental Fashion Veto: At one point in the story, he yells at Apollo for wearing a crop top in public.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He's the main antagonist of the story, and he insults Wolfgang (his son's boyfriend) by calling him a mutt (a slur for canines in this setting). He also deadnames Holly.

  • Wedding Ring Removal: Fitting for his sleazy nature, he always removes his wedding ring before getting intimate with his affairs.

The current champion of the Hoenn League.

  • The Ace: He's the strongest trainer in the Hoenn region, is constantly respected and adored by everyone around him and is constantly looking out for ordinary trainers.
  • Badass Longcoat: He's powerful enough to be the regional league Champion, and his default outfit includes a long flowing trenchcoat.
  • Bitch Slap: In one chapter, Apollo slaps Frank for suggesting that he take the protagonists along to Slateport City.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: A drink variant: one drink he enjoys is a "smorgasvein" (a shot of lager dropped into a glass of wine).
  • Blow You Away: Has the Flying-type Skarmory on his roster.
  • Broken Ace: While he's presented as an all-powerful Champion who can get anything he wants, he's exhausted of the press constantly bombarding him and fangirls squealing over him. He's also gay and afraid that coming out will put both him and Wolfgang in danger.
  • Clashing Cousins: He and Frank used to get along, but don't anymore, despite Apollo wanting to reach out to Frank. They start talking to each other again in chapter 39. Except they're not actually cousins, they're half-brothers.
  • Closet Gay: While his friends, the few family members he trusts, and his long-term boyfriend know he's gay, he has to stay closeted in public due to his annoying fangirls.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Apollo is in a stable relationship with Wolfgang, but Don thinks of Wolfgang as "a mangy mutt".
  • Dragon Tamer: He’s good friends with Latios, after the latter saved his life. He returns the favor by helping rescue Latias from a Pastel admin.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Aside from the squealing fangirls, Apollo has his share of male admirers (namely, Benedict, Kidd, Tank, O’Hare and Julian).
  • Everything's Better with Sparkles: Apollo's Metagross (Servo) is a shiny who sparkles when released from its Poké Ball.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: His type speciality is Steel.
  • Expy: Of Jotaro Kujo. Both have muscular builds, wear black trenchcoats, and have a rough relationship with their family yet care deep down for others. However Apollo is much more respectful to women.

  • Groupie Brigade: Has one in Slateport City, to his dismay. He hates the way they swarm all over him.
  • Heroic Build: He's muscular and is a heroic character who fights villainous teams to protect others.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Apollo is critical of Frank's behavior while possessing it himself, usually in front of the protagonists:
    • Frank says "damned grunts" and is met with "Watch your fucking language".
    • Apollo chews out Frank for his party trick (balancing a lit cigarette on his tongue and swallowing it whole), then is convinced into showing off his party trick (shotgunning a can of beer).
  • Mr. Fanservice: He has a muscular build, wears tight and revealing clothes, and multiple characters find him handsome. He's also starred in several adult magazines, and he has a healthy sex life with his boyfriend Wolfgang.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: His Pokémon seen are nicknamed a Skarmory named Crow, an Aggron named Jonah and a Metagross named Servo.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Gender inverted. Apollo is considered incredibly handsome. Unfortunately, it means countless fangirls only care about his looks and power instead of his personality. Fortunately he has Wolfgang, who loves him for who he is.
  • Theme Naming: All his Pokémon are named after Mystery Science Theater 3000 characters (Jonah, Joel, Crow and Servo).
  • Vague Age: Averted. He's 25.

Frank Hawkwind

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_cousin.png

Apollo's younger "cousin", dealing with his own psychological problems. He temporarily joins the protagonists starting in Fallarbor Town, and leaves after battling at Mt. Chimney.

His past team: Croagunk, Hawlucha, Poliwrath, Lucario, Hitmontop and Machamp.

His current team: Hawlucha, Talonflame, Gliscor, Skarmory, Swanna and Pidgeot.

  • All There in the Manual: The notes in several AO3 chapters reveal his current team.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: In a modern-day setting, he's wearing a simple kimono and sarashi, and other characters don't comment on it. As a teenager he wore a letterman's jacket straight out of the fifties.
  • Badass Long Robe: He wears a navy blue kimono over his clothing, and has a strong team full of fully-evolved Pokémon.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Used to train multiple Fighting-types until his beloved Croagunk died. He still has a Hawlucha named Rico on his team.
  • Bastard Bastard: Downplayed. While Frank is one of Don's illegitimate children, he's only aloof and prickly.
  • Black Sheep: Uses Flying-types, unlike the rest of his family who use Steel types. Using Flying-types is common with illegitimate Hawkwinds, like his half-sister Celia. Before then he used Fighting-types, but stayed to the family's typing and had a Lucario.
  • Blow You Away: He currently uses Flying types on his roster, symbolizing his desire to 'fly away' from his tragedy.
  • Character Development: Frank starts as a stoic aloof chain-smoking trainer who fights alone. Later, he starts warming up to Apollo and the protagonists. Chapter 39 even has him lose his cigarette and join Apollo for some whiskey. In chapter 43 he finally starts talking to Rooney again. In chapter 46, he quits smoking once he comes to accept Belladonna being gone for good.
  • Culture Equals Costume: He wears a kimono and a sarashi underneath, fitting his Hoennian heritage.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: During his time in the Sinnoh region, he was able to defeat the Elite Four, but his team was effortlessly defeated by the Champion's Garchomp.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 18 puts focus on him, showing him and Holly venting their frustrations. It's heavily implied he had suicidal thoughts and was about to kill himself before going to see her.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Frank's past starts with him as a teenager battling the Elite Four but failing to defeat the Champion. After Belladonna's untimely death, Frank fell into a start of darkness. He and his boyfriend split up, he gave away most of his Pokémon, started smoking regularly, stopped talking to his friends and family, went to jail for trespassing and has suicidal thoughts. He's slowly starting to get better, though. Until it's revealed that he's the result of one of Don's multiple affairs.
  • Dead Sidekick: Belladonna, his Croagunk, was murdered several months before the story began.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His introduction scene has him cussing out a Team Cottage grunt for abusing several Ariados.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: He has permanent eye bags on his face, fitting his depressive nature.
  • Grief-Induced Split: After his Croagunk, Belladonna, died, he and Rooney broke up.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: He joins the boys several times in the story, and his team is much stronger than theirs. He tags along for the Team Cottage arc and leaves by the end of Chapter 21, before joining the group again in chapter 44.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: It's all but confirmed that Belladonna died to save Frank and Rooney back in Sinnoh.
  • I Choose to Stay: After Belladonna dies, Frank gave away most of his Pokémon. Rico (his Hawlucha) is still on his team in the present day.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Downplayed. Frank is 21, Holly is 14, but they start to build a friendship in Chapter 18.
  • In Vino Veritas: In chapter 39, he drinks some whiskey with Apollo. After the whiskey, he feels more confident and willing to reach out to others. He's still emotionally scarred from losing Belladonna, but he's willing to crack jokes.
  • I Work Alone: Downplayed. Frank doesn't mind teaming up with others to battle, but usually battles alone out of personal trauma. He eventually grows out of this.
  • Manly Tears: After Belladonna is brutally murdered by another trainer's Zoroark, Frank sheds a waterfall of tears in grief.
  • Must Have Nicotine: He frequently smokes cigarettes in the story, suggested to be a way to cope with Belladonna's death. In chapter 39, he loses his cigarette in the sky, but later relapses into more smoking. In chapter 46 he uses his last box of cigarettes as incense for Belladonna's grave, then quits in favor of chewing gum.
  • The Nicknamer: He formerly had this trait. His Croagunk was named Belladonna, while all his other Pokémon had nicknames too. Aside from Rico the Hawlucha, his current Pokémon don't have nicknames.
  • Offscreen Breakup: Frank and Rooney were seen in a happy relationship in Frank's Day in the Limelight chapter, but their breakup hasn't been seen in the story. He starts to rekindle his romantic interest after his character development.
  • Oral Fixation: As part of quitting his cigarette addiction, Frank starts chewing oolong flavored chewing gum.
  • Origins Episode: The fourth gaiden chapter is about his past as a trainer, his accomplishments and how he was mentally broken even before his Croagunk was brutally murdered.
  • Put on a Bus: After the Team Cottage arc, he doesn't appear in the fic until chapter 39. It's later revealed that he was arrested and thrown in jail for trespassing on Team Cottage property.
  • Royal Bastard: A modern variant: he's the illegitimate son of the powerful CEO Don Hawkwind.
  • Second-Face Smoke: In his debut chapter, he blows cigarette smoke in a Team Cottage grunt's face.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He swears much more than the rest of the cast combined, and his debut shows him cussing out a Team Cottage grunt.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Apollo and Frank both are buff gay eagles, use a Skarmory on their team, wear long coats, and are very strong battlers.
  • Straight Gay: It's revealed in chapter 33 that Rooney is his ex-boyfriend.
  • Unaffected by Spice: He'll eat entire handfuls of ghost peppers without breaking a sweat, and tricks Apollo into eating one.
  • Vague Age: Averted. He's 21.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's 21, but looks much older with bags under his eyes. Justified due to his smoking habits and untreated trauma.

Amelia Hawkwind

Don's wife and Apollo's mother.

  • Batter Up!: Appropriately for a woman pissed off about her cheating husband, Amelia uses a baseball bat to destroy his office.
  • Woman Scorned: After finding out about the multiple times that Don cheated on her, Amelia trashes his office and steals his Pokémon for herself.
