Darker Busters
A team of ARKS operatives that the player joins in Season 1. Originally consisting of Gene, a new ARKS member, and More, a Weaponoid, the team later grows to add Annette and Bruno over the course of Season 1. While the team serves no direct goal, they travel the cosmos and provide assistance to anyone in need. Season 2 sees Stra and Calamity, a pair of Weaponoids, join the ranks, and in Season 3 an ARKS researcher named Suleiman joins the team.Seraphy
An Operator and main character of Classic Season who guides you through your journey through the world of Phantasy Star Online 2. She appears to be more than she seems, and may have ties with the mysterious Dr. Cohen, who vanished four years ago.
After the events of Classic Season, she returns to life as an Operator, serving as Mission Control for the Darker Busters through a variety of adventures.
In IDOLA: Phantasy Star Saga, Seraphy is featured as a playable character called "Flammy", who lost her memories when she was summoned to Vandor through the Stargate.
- Action Girl: She doesn't fight often due to being an Operator, but when she does, she can deal some damage.
- Art Shift: Underwent this between Episodes 1 and 2. The former used PSO2 models, while the latter uses anime designs.
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Averted. When she destroys the secret laboratory at Darker's Den with a Launcher, her face is covered in soot from the explosions.
- The Cameo: Appears from time to time in the main game, handing out Client Orders to ARKS.
- Childhood Friends: Was this with Donovan.
- Damsel out of Distress: She is taken captive by Donovan and imprisoned at a secret laboratory at Darker's Den. However, this allows her to destroy the lab from the inside.
- Disappeared Dad: It turns out Dr. Cohen is this for her.
- Foreshadowing: Her MyRoom in the Chip Laboratory has a Launcher on display. Turns out, she's secretly proficient with them.
- Iconic Outfit: Her operator uniform, which, due to being the only NPC in either game to not update to the current uniform, is essentially her own unique outfit. She even gets it back in IDOLA with a Launcher themed after its clothing pattern to go with it.
- Mission Control: Serves as this for the majority of the game, until she takes matters into her own hands.
- Non-Uniform Uniform: Uniquely, she is the only NPC in either PSO2 or PSO2es to not receive the updated Episode 4 uniform, leaving her as the only ARKS staff member with the original uniform.
- Promoted to Playable: She is a playable character in IDOLA as "Flammy".
- Small Girl, Big Gun: She's not that short, but all of her Launchers she wields are essentially as big as she is, if not bigger.
Gene
A young 3rd Generation ARKS and the heroine of the game from Season 1 onwards. While good-natured and always proactive, she has a rough time in combat due to how she interacts with photons. Following the unexplained destruction of an EMA research facility that killed 208,893 ARKS staff, she, you, and the Weaponoid More form a team to track down Zakard, a Deuman who survived the incident and may possess valuable information on the cause.
In Season 2, she inadvertently becomes a mother figure for Duna, a Trans-Enemy who takes the form of a young girl. The bond between Gene and Duna grows as the Darker Busters seek the truth behind the Trans-Enemy incident.
In Season 3, Gene is caught in the struggle of the Erzimaruts, an advanced alien civilization who seek to reclaim their planet from the Dark Falz that attacked it. After a chance encounter with Khorshid, Gene leaves the Darker Busters to help Khorshid seek a way to defeat the Dark Falz.
Gene also appears in IDOLA: Phantasy Star Saga as a Crossover character.
- 11th-Hour Superpower: Following a very persuasive speech from Lord, Lord loans Gene his half of Roto Raut's power during the climax of Season 3, causing her to assume her true form of the Weaponoid of Roto Raut. Not only does she attain god-like raiments, she also quite literally becomes one of the most powerful characters in Phantasy Star Online 2 canon and nearly defeats Dark Falz Haddaj singlehandedly, with the player, Akhtar, and Khorshid moving in to finish what she started. Predictably, she loses access to the power after the battle, but Khorshid reassures her that she might find it again.
- Action Girl: She tries her best to be one, but every major battle ends with her out of stamina and out of breath, since she has a spectacularly-high photon consumption rate.
- Affectionate Nickname: "Leader" for the Player Character.
- Ambiguously Human: Gene being a Weaponoid is a major plot twist in Season 1.
- And Now for Someone Completely Different: Her Season 3 Side Story makes her temporarily playable as a unique gimmick.
- Anthropomorphic Personification: The Wham Episode that is Chapter 9 reveals that Gene is also a Weaponoid, of half a Cosmogenic Arm that was split into halves and could not be repaired.
- Convection Smonvection: Averted in her case only. The intensified heat-charged photons in the Volcanoes overwhelm Gene due to her abnormal photon absorption capacity, and she passes out on the spot.
- Conveniently an Orphan: Gene's parents died in the EMA facility explosion that occurred prior to the story. This drives her to find out the truth behind the incident. She does, and she's not happy. Later subverted, as it's revealed late in Season 1 that she doesn't have parents and her memories of them were fabricated.
- Costume Evolution:
- Between Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, her Stella Tears loses extra fabric around the breasts and leaves straps instead, giving her a prominent cleavage with Sideboob. This modification was done by the Medical Team to better regulate her high photon consumption.
- From Season 2 onward, she swaps her Stripperific Stella Tears outfit for the Stella Memories outfit, which is much more modest as it takes the form of a sweater with armor attachments and small wings.
- Demoted to Extra: In Season 3. Much of her time in the story is spent offscreen in favor of giving more focus to Akhtar and Annette. Her side of the story is detailed through Side Story episodes.
- Dual Wielding: Uses double Sabers, which doubles as Foreshadowing as to her true identity.
- Fake Memories: In order to protect her, Zakard gave her false memories about having dead parents and forced her to flee.
- Foreshadowing: In the main game, where she appears as a guest character, her Partner Card reveals that her weapon is a Double Saber. The Cosmogenic Arm she is a Weaponoid of is also a Double Saber.
- Girlish Pigtails: Her hair accessories do her hair up like this.
- Heroic RRoD:
- At the end of Chapter 2, she overexerts herself fighting Zakard and physically breaks down, fainting. She spends the subsequent Time Skip in rehab to recover her strength.
- At the end of Chapter 6, she breaks down again, but this time, she becomes completely unresponsive.
- Once again in the Season 1 finale, where she makes one last attempt to save Lord. In her Side Story, it's revealed that she passed out after the battle, and the rest of the team have to escort her to safety while Lord's Pocket Dimension collapses.
- Honor Before Reason: Once she discovers that Zakard caused the incident that killed her parents, she mercilessly pursues him through the Ruins in spite of Seraphy ordering her to pull back. Your team winds up losing him anyways, and the team is disbanded as consequence.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: In IDOLA, Gene loses her memories after passing through the Stargate. She regains them after the end of EPISODE 1 and joins the Stargate Corps with Seraphy, Matoi, Risa, and Quna.
- Magikarp Power: Gene may qualify as one of the absolute weakest combatants in the entire PSO2 series thanks to her status as an incomplete Weaponoid rendering her with a severe lack of Photon control. However, when she picks up her 11th-Hour Superpower in Season 3, she skyrockets to Physical God status!
- Meaningful Name: "Gene" comes from the word "Genesis", as in "Genesis Weapon", the Japanese name for the Cosmogenic Arms.
- Ms. Fanservice: Short skirt? Yup. Twintails? Yup. Zettai Ryouiki? Yup. Plot? Very yup. Outfit that shows off a prominent cleavage with Sideboob? Yup. Gigantic knockers to emphasize said sideboob and cleavage? Absolutely!
- Mighty Glacier: In IDOLA. Her stat mix gives her unreasonably high DEF and miserably low SPD; don't be surprised if she lives through attacks that would kill other characters.
- Parental Substitute: Gene serves as one to Duna, becoming her "mother" of sorts. This becomes an issue when they find out who Duna's real mother is.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When Zakard reveals that he was responsible for the destruction of the EMA facility, Gene becomes dead set on catching him, as it's also revealed that her parents were killed in that explosion. However, her stamina catches up to her after defeating a Zeshrydha, and she passes out.
- Spell My Name With An S:
- When the game originally came out, fan translators had a hard time deciding whether it should be spelled "Gene" or "Jeane". Official material later confirmed it was the former, as it's also a Meaningful Name.
- The official localization of IDOLA renders it as "Jeanne" despite Japanese material and the fact that it's a Meaningful Name saying otherwise.
- The official localization of PSO 2 itself spells it "Gené", with an accented e.
More
A Weaponoid of "Claymore", a 4★ Sword. While outside of his Chip, he takes the form of a fairy-like boy with cybernetic wings. Despite his miniature size, he's outgoing and easily connects with the main characters, although he has difficulty overstepping his bounds. Seraphy assigns him to your team to assist tracking down Zakard, a former researcher at the EMA facility that was destroyed in a violent explosion.
In Chapter 3, he assists in bringing you and Gene back together to continue the hunt for Zakard, this time under the operation of the team "Darker Busters".
- Affectionate Nickname: Both Bruno and Sourush refer to him as "ochibi". This is translated in the English patch as "kiddo".
- Anthropomorphic Personification: Of the Sword "Claymore". Or not; he's actually the Weaponoid of a Cosmogenic Arm that was transformed into a Claymore.
- Curtains Match the Window: Red hair with reddish-orange eyes.
- Fairy Companion: Tiny, has wings, and accompanies the player's party? Check, check, and check.
- Fiery Redhead: For a small guy, he's pretty excitable.
- Oddball in the Series: He's the only Weaponoid based off a weapon that isn't rare; namely, the 4★ Sword "Claymore". He's also the only Weaponoid that's 10★, whereas others are 11★ or 12★. He's also the only Weaponoid that's given to the player by default.
- Support Party Member: His Chip grants the ability "More's Cheer", which grants you Regenerating Health and an attack bonus when your attack hits the enemy.
- Winged Humanoid: Sports sci-fi wings that look like they were fashioned out of a weapon. Fitting, since he's a Weaponoid.
Annette
A soft-spoken Newman teen. While quiet, she possesses a steel will that drives her forward. In Chapter 3, she appears in the nick of time to defend your team from Dante after he threatens to attack. After Gene recovers from collapsing due to heat exhaustion, Annette joins your team in hopes of tracking down someone close to her.
- Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Effectively Gene's polar opposite.
- Big Damn Heroes: Pulls this off on your party when Dante is provoked.
- Elegant Gothic Lolita: With some modernized touches, but otherwise dresses the part.
- Foil: To Gené. She wields Rods in contrast to Gené's Double Sabers, and tends to be reticent in nature. She also has an overall darker palette, and while Gené has a huge rack, Annette is flat as a board.
- Pointy Ears: Standard Newman fare.
- Space Elves: The very definition of a Newman.
- The Stoic: Her attitude rarely ever changes.
Bruno
The leader of the team "Darker Busters". An affable and laid-back man, he joins the Darker Busters in Chapter 4 and subsequently becomes its head.
- Affectionate Nickname: Calls More "Chibi", a nickname that More takes offense to.
- Early-Bird Cameo: He first appeared as a silhouetted figure at the end of Chapter 1, pre-Time Skip. He makes his first official appearance in Chapter 4.
Stra
Calamity
Akhtar
An Erzimarut who serves as the central character and Deuteragonist of Season 3. She is the guardian of the Score, a mysterious power that could potentially serve as the key to defeating the Dark Falz that is bound to the Erzimarut's home planet. Although she gives off a Shrinking Violet appearance, Akhtar is surprisingly headstrong and refuses to concede to anything who gets in her way. Her lack of outside experience also makes her easily impressed by the world around her.
Lien
A unique, talking Lillipan who accompanies Akhtar and subsequently the Darker Busters on their quest. Unlike the other members of his race, Lien can converse with ARKS (albeit with a "li" Verbal Tic) and supplies valuable information in the journey.
- Pokémon Speak: As it turns out, he can only speak coherently when in the presence of an Erzimarut; during a brief period where Akhtar is separated from the party, Lien's speech quickly degenerates to just shouting "li" like all the other members of his race, and his speech isn't restored until Khorshid joins the party in Akhtar's place.
Suleiman
An ARKS researcher who joins the Darker Busters during Season 3. Although he lacks the ability to use Photons, he makes up for it with his excellent analytical abilities. Due to his inability to participate in combat, he is easily frightened by hostiles and may turn tail at a moment's notice.
- Ax-Crazy: Suleiman goes way off the deep end in Chapter 7. Bruno surmises that exposure to Dark Falz may have affected him a little too much.
- Evil Counterpart: He's basically an evil version of Ulc.
- Heel–Face Revolving Door: He starts on the Darker Buster's side, but exposure to Dark Falz combined with hidden resentment about being a Muggle causes him to turn against them. However, he comes back during the final chapter in a Big Damn Heroes moment and saves them with a Heroic Sacrifice.
- Mini-Mecha: Backed into a corner, Suleiman boards a personalized AIS with a Red and Black and Evil All Over color scheme. Suleiman's AIS uses Erzimarut technology, and Bruno quickly points out that this AIS has specs far beyond those of a regular AIS.
- Muggle: He can't use Photons. This causes him a lot of angst, as revealed in Chapter 7.
- Shoddy Knockoff Product: He creates his own versions of the Erzimaruts' Darker Weapons, signified with a red antenna instead of green. The fact that these Darker Weapons are loyal to Suleiman and not the Erzimaruts is revealed when they suddenly attack Soroush. Soroush is merely amused, questioning if Suleiman's imitation DWs can compete with the originals.
Khorshid
An Erzimarut who is in pursuit of Akhtar and the Score that she safeguards. Unlike Akhtar, Khorshid is more ruthless and not afraid to get her hands dirty, even if it means going through other people. Despite her rough personality, she is determined to defeat Dark Falz and save their home planet, no matter the cost.
Central Research Department
A division of ARKS originally lead by Luther, the Central Research Department is alternatively known as "Void" and is known for their inhumane and dangerous experiments. They are responsible for the creation of the Chip technology, as well as the Weaponoids, Trans Enemies, and the technology that gave them life.Dr. Cohen
A researcher who mysteriously vanished four years ago. He is responsible for the development of Chips. His servant, Donovan, has been tasked with finding him. Although gone missing, you seem to encounter him numerous times across your journey, and his sudden reappearance may have something to do with the mysterious "Type C" Darker infection.
- The Atoner: He's done a lot of harm under the employment of Void that he wishes he could take back. By the end of the Episode, he's in atoning in prison.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After Seraphy destroys the secret lab from the inside, Donovan attacks Cohen this way in an attempt to prevent him from escaping. While he is badly injured and faints soon afterward, the attack is not life-threatening, and he eventually survives the ordeal.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: He's Seraphy's father.
Donovan
A "veteran hunter" HUcaseal and Dr. Cohen's servant. She has been tasked with finding the doctor, who mysteriously vanished four years ago. Her placid exterior disguises her ulterior motives.
- Black Eyes of Evil: With red, too!
- The Bus Came Back: After having made no appearances throughout the entire post-Classic Season story, she reappears at the very end of Season 3 during a flashback where Suleiman reveals who exactly helped him get to Carnabede to aid the Darker Busters in their darkest hour.
- Childhood Friends: With Seraphy.
- Robot Girl: She's a Caseal, after all.
- Red and Black and Evil All Over: It'd be more surprising if she weren't evil with that palette.
- White Hair, Black Heart: If the palette and the eyes weren't enough warning signs...
Zakard
A Deuman and former ARKS researcher who survived the destruction of the EMA research facility four months prior to the story. The heroes pursue him in hopes of ensuring his survival and figuring out the cause of the incident. He possesses the ability to command Darkers.
- Ax-Crazy: His introduction cutscene wastes no time in establishing that he is completely, utterly deranged. He used to not be like this.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: The brainwashing inflicted upon him by his malicious fellow scientists caused him to develop an Ax-Crazy evil alter ego that comes out at random times. This is the side of him that led him to create Lord.
- Color-Coded Characters: His color scheme is black and purple. However, he's Good All Along.
- Evil Laugh: Prone to letting off one of these.
- Good All Along: He's the only scientist at the EMA facility who wanted the Weaponoids to be used for good. He caused the destruction of the EMA facility at the beginning of the story to ensure that the Weaponoids could not be used for evil.
- Horned Humanoid: He's a Deuman, who naturally have horns.
- Killed Off for Real: Lord mercilessly ends Zakard after the Vardha Soma he's psychologically linked to is beaten by the Darker Busters in Chapter 10. This weakens him enough for Lord to kill him.
- Sharp-Dressed Man: His standard attire involves a neat suit and glasses.
- Significant Wardrobe Shift: He reappears in Chapter 6 sporting an eyepatch on his right eye, a beige cape, and a prosthetic Red Right Hand.
- Sole Survivor: He was the only one to escape from the explosion alive, because he was responsible for it in the first place.
- Specs of Awesome: He wears some pretty sweet glasses.
- Technicolor Eyes: He has one blue eye and one amber eye, befitting of a Deuman.
Trans Enemies
A product of E.M.A., Trans Enemies are similar in concept to Weaponoids, but with the Innocent Blue tech applied to the native species that ARKS encounters on various planets instead. Trans Enemies take the appearance of humans but sport distinctive features based on the creature that they were born from, and also sport the ability to transform back into their original forms at will.Dante
An ARKS with a cheerful disposition. He appears to have ties to the mysterious Zakard, a foe who vanished in AP 240 after destroying an ARKS research facility and avoiding capture. He possesses the ability to transform into an Org Keratos with Darker properties.
- Curtains Match the Window: He has blue eyes to match his blue hair, not that he shows them that often anyways.
- Eyes Always Shut: Almost all the time. The times when he opens them are the times that he's dead serious.
- Heel–Face Turn: When Dante picks up on Lord duping him for much of the story, he decides to help the Darker Busters take down Lord, according to Fel's wishes.
- Faux Affably Evil: He may be a cheery fellow, but he's certainly not one to be trifled with.
- Motor Mouth: He speaks very quickly.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: At the end of Chapter 3, he becomes an Org Keratos and attacks your party.
Levi
A young boy with powers similar to that of Dante.
- Arc Welding: His sudden appearance in Season 2 serves to tie his backstory together with the Trans-Enemy plot.
- The Bus Came Back: He makes a surprise return in Season 2 by pulling off a Big Damn Heroes for the Darker Busters, and later serves as a close ally for the remainder of the Season.
- Early-Bird Cameo: Shows up at the very end of Chapter 4 to bail out Levi after she gets stomped by the Darker Busters, then escapes. He becomes relevant in a future chapter.
- Little Bit Beastly: He possesses two horns protruding from the back of his head that circle forward, as well as a tail with a crystal at the end.
- Supernatural Gold Eyes: To go with his shape-shifting powers.
Fel
A young girl with powers similar to that of Dante.
- Little Bit Beastly: She has small, furry ears and a tail.
- Stripperific: The top of her outfit is little more than a little fabric covering her breasts.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: She transforms into a Fang Banshee with Darker abilities at the end of Chapter 4.

The Erzimaruts
The Erzimaruts are an ancient civilization based on a distant planet who are responsible for the creation of Lillipa's technological society. Long ago, the Erzimarut's home planet was assaulted by a Dark Falz, who is now bound to the planet; the Erzimaruts, seeking refuge from the Dark Falz, escaped to a space station orbiting the planet. In order to survive, the race created android bodies known as "Dark Nix" and transferred their consciousness into them; the Dark Nix, due to the circumstances surrounding their creation, rely on Darker Factor to maintain themselves and naturally repel Photons. A chance encounter by the Darker Busters with a select few Erizimaruts begin to lead them both on a mission to save the race and defeat the Dark Falz once and for all.Sorūsh

Lord
A Dark Falz who commands Dante and company. His fearsome power is absolute, enough to make the likes of Dante tremble in fear.
- Anthropomorphic Personification: Chapter 9 reveals that he is Gene's dark counterpart, a Weaponoid created by Zakard's Brainwashed and Crazy alter ego from half a Cosmogenic Arm that was split into halves and damaged beyond repair.
- Expy: Proto Falz Lord looks astonishingly similar to Falz Angel.
- Villainous Breakdown: When Gene explains that both his former cronies and herself were stronger than him because of their capacity to feel emotion, Lord flips out and starts screaming his head off. He's so far gone at this point, the Profound Darkness's influence begins to take control of him.
Weaponoids
Anthropomorphic Personifications of ARKS weaponry sealed into the form of Chips. Every Weaponoid is distinct in both design and personality, and can manifest outside of their Chips, each with their own tale to tell.
- Affectionate Nickname: More shortens "ドラゴンスレイヤー" down to "ドラスレ" as his means of addressing her. Gene calls her "Dragon Slayer-san".
- Blow You Away: Prophecies of Motav, Blade Dance, Rabbit Wand, Momijihime, and Nyoibou are Wind type.
- Captain Ersatz: Dye his hair black and take away one of his guns, and T Yasminkov 2000H is basically Solid Snake.
- Cat Girl: Sacred Duster. Combined with Meido, at that.
- Casting a Shadow: Yamigarasu, Dragon Slayer, Naseyoteri, Seimei Kikami, Noire Mirrors, and Bluesy Rhapsody are all Dark type.
- Dance Party Ending: The conclusion to Blade Dance's story. After gathering Gene, More, and Seraphy, everyone gets together and dances.
- Day in the Limelight: The Side Story Quests flesh out each of the Weaponoids by giving them their own stories.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: Bluesy Rhapsody, incredibly ecchi design aside, possesses an Ability known as Climax Heart.
- Hot as Hell: Bluesy Rhapsody very definitely gives this impression. Replete with the horns, the tail, and extremely suggestive pose.
- An Ice Person: Sacred Duster, Mace of Adaman, Niren Kamui, Dies Ryu, and Kazanou are Ice type.
- Improbably Female Cast: You could count the number of male Weaponoids on one hand.note
- Light 'em Up: Psycho Wand, Strike Brute, Glorious Wing, Imperial Pick, Bio Triner, Tabulus, and Rentaunam are Light type.
- Moe Anthropomorphism: A very, very, very large number of Weaponoids are these.
- Pimped-Out Dress: Shut Rounder, both of them.
- Pink Is Feminine: Tabulus, Glorious Wing, Rabbit Wand, and Shut Rounder sport this scheme.
- Playing with Fire: H44 Missouri T, More, Tennimusou, Red Scorpio, Akebono, and Shut Rounder are Fire type.
- The Prankster: Mace of Adaman, being as young as she is, likes tricking people. She's also rather immature, being a kid; during an excursion to Wopal, she nearly gives More a heart attack with one of her "tricks", which causes him to give her a major What the Hell, Hero?.
- Shrinking Violet: Psycho Wand is super shy.
- Sideboob: Notably, Prophecy of Motav has the sides cut out of her robe for no distinct reason other than for Fanservice.
- Technicolor Eyes: Narl Crescent has one blue and one red eye.
- Third-Person Person: Mace of Adaman, fitting with her child-like nature.
- Verbal Tic: Mace of Adaman ends all of her sentences with "-daman" in place of a typical sentence-ending particle like "desu".
- Weapon of X-Slaying:
- Dragon Slayer is super-effective against Dragonkin.
- Mine Bunker is super-effective against Mech-types.
- Rock Knuckle is super-effective against Natives.
