"Justice will be done."

Voiced by: Darin De Paul (English)note

A highly decorated German soldier, Reinhardt joined Overwatch as part of the original strike team to end the Omnic Crisis. When Overwatch grew to a global organization, Reinhardt became one of its leading faces, owing to his endless glory and pride.

While he was a reliable Overwatch member, he was also its harshest critic, being quick to expose corruption or misdeeds in Overwatch's work. When forced to retire due to his age, he watched from the sidelines as the beloved organisation he once worked for fell into anarchy and corruption. The day Overwatch disbanded was the day Reinhardt took up his armor again, and vowed to fight threats across Europe, like a knight of old. When he got the call to reform Overwatch, he jumped at the call without a moment's hesitation.

Reinhardt's main focus is to be an unstoppable juggernaut who pushes his team through the frontlines. His Abilities include:
  • Reinhardt's primary weapon is his Rocket Hammer, a melee attack that deals massive damage in an arc with every swing.
  • Barrier Field deploys a shield in front of him that absorbs a large amount of damage before it's destroyed, but renders Reinhardt unable to attack.
  • Charge sends him careening forward, grabbing enemies in his path and taking them along for the ride. If he collides with a wall, any enemy grabbed will take significant damage.
  • Fire Strike causes him to swing his hammer through the air, making a flaming projectile that damages foes and passes through barriers.
  • Earthshatter, Reinhardt's ultimate, has him slam his hammer into the ground, damaging and knocking down enemies in front of him; while in this vulnerable state, he or his allies can easily finish them off.

Previous Abilities

  • Steadfast was a passive which gives him increased resistance to knockback effects.

    open/close all folders
    A-H
  • Achilles' Heel: Reinhardt's giant shield is a powerful asset for a team, but he doesn't have much in the way of long range or speed. As such, anyone who can quickly burst his shield down (like Junkrat or Bastion) or disable it entirely (like Sombra) will leave him very vulnerable, leaving him having to wait behind cover to recharge, or possibly out in the open to get shredded by his enemies with not many options to fight back.
  • Advancing Wall of Doom: Turns into one when he activates his Charge. If he activates it, get out of the way, because nothing short of death, a sudden wall in his path, or hard crowd control is going to stop him, and if you're not a tank yourself, you're dead if he hits you.
  • Agent Peacock: In "Honor and Glory", he had a high opinion of himself and had no respect for orders from his superiors, often charging into battles without any concern for his team and his own safety. At the end of the short, he gains humility after causing a fatal injury to his close friend and mentor.
  • Animal Motifs: The lion; the gauntlet that projects his Barrier Field is decorated like one. His "Lionhardt" skin, naturally, takes this up a notch (as does its Palette Swap "Stonehardt"), with six depictions of Lions on his person. His face also looks similar to a lion due to his connected beard and long hair resembling a lions mane, his deep voice can also be compared to a growling lion. On the other hand, his original Crusader armor from his younger days as shown in Honor and Glory seemed to prefer Gryphons as a central motif.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: His Fire Strike projectile goes through shields and barriers and even keeps going through any enemies it hits.
  • A Scar to Remember: The scar over his eye is from an OR14 unit, he broke formation by charging it and he had to be rescued by his friend and mentor, Balderich. Balderich died from his wounds after fighting the omnics and Reinhardt lives to honour his mentor's sacrifice and follow in his footsteps by fighting to protect others.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: His voice line from the summer games is spoken with the enthusiasm of a distracted child.
    OOOOH! GLITTERING PRIZES!
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Charge can be used to push away D.Va's self-destructing mecha, but the situations in which this is a practical option are limited, especially since simply blocking the explosion makes more sense. Even then, Reinhardt has to quickly pick the best place to charge to, because a wrong direction could prove even worse than the original target.
  • Badass Boast: He has a lot:
(after a kill) "Do I have your attention yet!?"
(when "on fire") "I am on fire! Come here and get burned..."
(after multiple enemy kills in a row)'' "When All You Have Is a Hammer…, everyone else is a nail!"
  • Badass Creed: The Crusader's motto: "Live with honor, die with glory."
  • Barrier Warrior: One of his main abilities is using his shield to protect himself and allies behind him. With 1,600 hit points, it is the strongest barrier in the game (aside from Symmetra's Photon Barrier, which is an ultimate rather than a regular ability).
  • Baritone of Strength: When he's not shouting, which is almost never, Reinhardt has one of the deepest voices in the game. He gets to show it off nicely during his stint as narrator for Junkenstein's Revenge.
  • Becoming the Costume:
    • His "Gridironhardt" costume has him say American football phrases such as "Blitzing!" when charging and "Touchdown!" when using his ultimate.
    • His "Minotaur" skin bases him off of the Minotaur of Classical Mythology, additionally granting him plenty of dialogue based on the themes of Greek myths. He also gets plenty of dialogue exchanging with other heroes using Greek mythology-themed skins.
Minotaur Reinhardt: You gods aren't as tough as you seem!
Hermes Lúcio: At least a mortal hasn't beaten me in combat.
      Minotaur Reinhardt: What?! Theseus cheated!
  • Becoming the Mask: A meta example. On April Fool's Day 2017, Reinhardt players on PC gained his hamminess through a chat filter which put their messages in all caps, added exclamation marks, and added one of his unlockable voice lines to the end of the message, also in all caps with exclamation marks.
    Player types: gg all
Result: GG ALL!!!! PRECISION GERMAN ENGINEERING!!!
  • Beware the Nice Ones: If people have problems, Reinhardt will come to solve them. If violent thugs are the problem, Reinhardt solves it by breaking their spines.
  • BFS: His hammer is bigger than any other weapon in the game. Hell, it's bigger than some of the smaller heroes. His "Blackhardt" and "Bloodhardt" skins turns the hammer into an equally large axe.
  • The Big Guy: Reinhardt is considered the largest character, always taking the center spot on victory screens, even though some characters like D.Va tend to look bigger than him on that screen. A few photos reveal he's just as big out of the Powered Armor as he is in it.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: The Big Guy to Torbjörn's Little Guy, being Vitriolic Best Buds.
  • Big "YES!": If a friendly Mercy provides a damage boost.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Not in the game proper, because he's obviously not a Bishōnen, but there's three sparkles around his helmet in his "Glorious" spray.
  • Bling of War:
    • His default armor is pretty fancy, but his Lionhardt skin takes this trope and runs with it by tricking him out in gold plating, a purple tabard and detailed lion designs on his chestplate and pauldrons.
    • The "Balderich" Legendary skin gives him his old commander's armor, which is even more fancy and elaborate.
    • The "Paragon" is his normal armor, decked out with gold and ivory plating.
    • The armor he wore in the Crusaders was blinged up to a level similar to Balderich's. Covered in ornate gryphon motifs, feather-like patterns, and blue glowing lights galore.
  • Blood Knight: He loves a good fight. As shown in Honor and Glory, he was even more enthusiastic in his youth, but his reckless Glory Seeker attitude jeopardized the mission when he charged ahead to fight the approaching Bastion units and OR14 units, even though he was told to protect and stay with his unit. On a more tragic note, his behavior caused the death of his friend and mentor Balderich.
(While his barrier is taking damage) "Bring. It. On! I LIVE for this!"
    (After respawning) "Hahahaha!! AGAIN! AGAIN!!"
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's great fun to his allies, and a terror to his enemies.
  • Bomb Disposal: If he can't simply find cover or block it with his shield, Reinhardt can Charge a Self-Destructing mecha away from his allies, preferably into a room where it's out of line of sight to his teammates, but ideally to a corner where he can then put a shield and tank the full blast. DO NOT charge the mecha towards his teammates.
  • Boring, but Practical: Being the only character whose primary weapon (until Brigitte was added) is melee in an FPS game, a majority of Reinhardt’s gameplay is him deploying his shield while moving at a snail's pace. Given the shield can block abilities that are otherwise One-Hit Kill, this is a very important job.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: He — and by extension, the rest of the Crusaders — acts like a Knight in Shining Armor in a futuristic superhero setting, and the folks at Blizzard have explicitly compared him to Don Quixote. Thankfully, with his mighty Powered Armor and Rocket Hammer, he makes it work.
  • Break Out the Museum Piece: Sometime after joining Overwatch, Reinhardt switched from his early Crusader armor (as seen in Honor and Glory) to the one he's seen in now; he's used that same one ever since, pushing it around 40 years old. Yet it, and other sets of Crusader armor, are still very formidable weapons in an age of laser pistols, hard light constructs, and other extremely advanced weapons. That said, the museum piece in question was cutting edge in its day. And it's being maintained by his goddaughter Brigitte, who is a world expert in defensive technology and powered armor.
  • Break the Haughty: In his younger days, he was just as Hot-Blooded as he is today, but also more headstrong and reckless. He grew out of it when his mentor saved his life at the cost of being mortally wounded and died holding off a wave of Omnics.
  • Bring It: Some of Reinhardt's voice clips and one of his emotes are this. One of his unlockable voice lines has him accusing his foe of cowardice ("Are you afraid to fight me?") and he will sometimes dare his opponents to come at him when using his shield or capturing the objective, whereas his Taunt emote will beckon them to a fight. Reinhardt also uses this trope in his Incoming Ham when he demands the local gang known as "the Dragons" to "face him in honorable combat" as well as when he's on fire.
I have found the enemy. Come and face me!
  • Bullfight Boss: Despite being a PvP game rather than one where you primarily face CPU Bosses, Reinhardt's Charge plays with the trope, as he's a Big Guy with a powerful tackle ability. His Charge is pretty fast — meaning it can be difficult to dodge without a roll, leap, knockback, or teleportation ability available. If he is avoided, however, Reinhardt is vulnerable both before and slightly after he comes to a dead stop, and he might just go hurtling off of a cliff as well. (Note that Reinhardt hitting you won't stop him from tumbling headlong over a cliff, but if he does, he'll drag you down with him.)
  • Character Development: His appearance in "Honor and Glory" shows him as an egotistical Glory Hound who ignored his superiors and never understood the weight of the Omnic Crisis; a far cry from the lionhearted paragon we see in-game.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Strangely for a character in a First-Person Shooter, Reinhardt is almost entirely melee-based.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: His Crusader armor allows him to take quite a beating, has a shield generator for him to protect himself and his team, and has a rocket pack to propel him for his Charge. "Dragon Slayer" deconstructs this; out of his armor Reinhardt, while a massive man with large muscles, is still the second oldest character in the roster. When he takes on a gang of thugs outside of his armor he is battered and beaten thoroughly in not time flat. Once he puts on his armor and goes for round two the fight ends twice as fast, but with Reinhardt as the victor.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: "Dragon Slayer" momentarily shows how he sees the world, with his motorcycle-riding opponents appearing as horse-riding lizardmen and a literal dragon. His engineer comments that he has an "active imagination" and that others should be careful what they say around him, lest they give him ideas. The writers have even compared him to Don Quixote, though luckily, he's grounded enough in reality to at least be able to target actual threats instead of a windmill.
  • Cool Helmet: His Crusader armor is topped off with a stylish crowned helmet that completely hides his face.
  • Cool Old Guy: He fervently believes in the ideals of superheroism, and old age has done nothing to dull his desire to uphold justice.
  • Cool Uncle: He's regarded as Brigitte's godfather, but Brigitte will affectionately refer to him as an uncle such as during Ironclad.
  • Couldn't Find a Lighter / Impromptu Campfire Cookout: His Marshmallows taunt has him roasting marshmallows by using the exhaust of his weapon.
  • Covered in Scars: Besides the massive scar over his eye, his upper body is covered in battle-scars accrued from a lifetime of combat. Many are probably due to him taking blows meant for someone else.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Signs of his age are shown in one of his highlight poses, where he flexes and cracks his back, then grabs it in pain and seemingly asks for a moment.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In "Dragon Slayer", Reinhardt is at first on the receiving end of one from a local gang known as "the Dragons" after their leader threatened to hurt innocent bystanders if he tried to stop the gang from harassing the citizens. Afterwards, the leader tells Reinhardt to leave the city and never return. When he dons his armor, he easily defeats them without much effort and demands that they leave the city and never return.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Your natural reaction after a successful multi-target Earthshatter is probably to immediately Charge them and pin one of them to kill them instantly, but the entire combo will only deal slight damage to everyone else. What you're supposed to do is attack them while they're down for these three seconds, then Charge through them to finish them off. One of Reinhardt's character-specific achievementsnote  practically exists to teach you this.
  • Death or Glory Attack: His Charge deals massive damage and pretty much kills any non-Tank on impact. The problem is that he's vulnerable before, during, and after it's active, it turns his back to any surviving enemies, and, if badly aimed, takes him out of squad formation and fails to do any significant damage at all.
  • Dented Iron: All his bumps and bruises are starting to catch up with him in his old age. His armor visually compliments this, with scuffs, dents, and chips all over the suit... but it is still going strong!
  • Depending on the Artist: The design of Reinhardt's eye scar varies slightly between his game, comic, and trailer appearances. Sometimes it's a thin line that bisects his left eye; other times, it's wide enough to fully cover his eye.
  • Determinator: Determined to fight under Overwatch's wing, despite his advanced age. Retirement? What's that?
Mercy: Reinhardt, don't you think it's time you hung it up? You're not getting any younger.
Reinhardt: Never. I will fight to my last breath!
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Charge is a Death or Glory Attack and his reduced turning capacity while Charging makes it unwieldy to control to actually hit the enemy. But as this video shows, landing a Pinning Charge is one of Rein's most important roles, as it initiates a teamfight, it gives the other team a disadvantage of 300 hp on their Tank or outright One-Hit Kill one of their team members, and it also disrupts positioning. A good Pinning Charge followed by Earthshatter is generally a recipe for a Total Party Kill on the enemy. Furthermore, Reinhardt's Fire Strike is one of his most difficult attacks to master, but is essential for using him effectively. Its difficulty stems from being a slow-moving projectile, which can easily be dodged, reflected by Genji, or absorbed by Zarya/D.Va if he uses it carelessly.
  • Double Knockout: If a charging Reinhardt collides with an enemy using a charge (i.e. another charging Reinhardt, Doomfist using Rocket Punch, Brigitte using Shield Bash, or a charging B.O.B.), both of heroes will be knocked to the ground as if they were just hit by an Earthshatter, making them both easy targets for anyone nearby, and doing quite a bit of damage to each other besides.
  • Dragons Versus Knights: The supplementary comic "Dragon Slayer" pits him against a group of gangsters called the Dragons, with a heavy emphasis on medieval knight-and-dragon imagery.
  • Draw Aggro: Less-experienced players can be drawn into futilely hammering on his shield in hopes of bringing it down. Players are also quick to turn their attention on him when his shield is down or pointed in another direction.
  • Dynamic Entry: Considering how telegraphed his Charge is, charging from out of the enemy's sight significantly improves your chance to land a pinning charge, and a successful pin can easily initiate a teamfight. And let's admit it, everyone has been on a receiving end of an enemy Rein barreling out of nowhere.
  • Easter Egg: He has a pre-game voice line for if his team spawns and none of them use actual guns as their primary weapons.
Reinhardt: Uh... perhaps some of us should have guns, no?
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Reinhardt's blinding eye scar was the result of recklessly charging into an enemy OR14 and failing to destroy it. The tables were turned, and his eye was cut out with a heated knife. He would have died if his master, Balderich, wasn't there to bail him out. However, Balderich was fatally wounded in the process, and then sacrificed himself. Reinhardt's scar is a constant reminder of the tortuous guilt he suffered over indirectly causing his friend and mentor's death.
  • Evil Costume Switch: "Blackhardt" and its Palette Swap "Bloodhardt" have ample Spikes of Villainy, replace the lion motif with a bat/gargoyle motif, replace the hammer with an axe, and have an ominous glowing core in the torso surrounded by what looks like a monstrous, fang-lined mouth. That said, it's just a cosmetic change and Reinhardt still acts exactly the same while wearing them.
  • Excalibur in the Rust: His Griefhardt skin gives this aesthetic, being Balderich's hammer and armor, overgrown with vegetation, dirt, and rust.
  • Eye Scream: In "Honor and Glory", it's revealed that Reinhardt lost his eye to the heated blade of an OR14 after he thoughtlessly charged into the Omnic ranks.
  • Face of a Thug: He has a rather ugly scar over his eye, and a thick beard to accompany it. That said, he's likely the kindest member of Overwatch.
  • Fanboy: Pre-battle banter has him asking D.Va of all people for her autograph.
  • Feeling Their Age: If Reinhardt charges into a wall, he'll make a loud groan and sometimes complain he's "not as young as I used to be." Also, one of his highlight intros shows him flexing heroically, until his back cracks and he has to stop.
  • Foe-Tossing Charge: Reinhardt's Charge sends him rocketing forward in a straight line, dragging with him the first target he hits and knocking away any other that runs into him. If he hits a wall, he will deal A LOT of damage, and he can even toss himself off of a cliff, taking his opponent with him, until either his back engine peters out or he crashes into something solid.
  • For Great Justice: Justice and protecting those in need is what motivates Reinhardt to keep fighting, even at his age. This could relate to him believing that his retirement was one of the main factors that led to the downfall of Overwatch and he will always remind himself about what he is fighting for at the start of a match.
  • Freudian Slip: Talks about how his armor's accumulated damage, yet it applies to himself as well.
"When has that ever stopped us before? Even old and worn... this armor can still serve its purpose. One day it may fall apart. But until that time, we will fight."
  • Friendly Rivalry: Following the first Summer Games update, he and Zarya share matching sprays that depict the two of them in an arm-wrestling match. Two players can each choose one and make a complete picture on a wall. Also, in pre-match dialogue, Zarya playfully teases Reinhardt and accuses him of being afraid to wrestle her, which Reinhardt scoffs at. He also taunts her by saying that if she keeps training, maybe one day she'll handle a "real" weapon (like his hammer), which she scoffs at.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: In "Honor and Glory", it's implied that Reinhardt was this to the crusaders and German soldiers before he matured. When Balderich told them to stay together, Reinhardt winked at his teammates, but they looked embarrassed by this news. When Reinhardt failed to defeat an OR14 unit, Balderich was the only one to be concerned. Granted, they were in the middle of a war zone and there was only one other crusader who was protecting the other soldiers; however, it's not hard to believe that the other soldiers lost concern for him due to his reckless arrogance.
  • Friend to All Children: Reinhardt states in "Dragon Slayer" that one of the rewards for dispensing justice is to see the children smile, and in Reflections, he is seen reading a book to Torbjörn's grandchildren on Christmas Eve.
  • The Gadfly: Reinhardt loves ribbing others, usually to stoke a friendly rivalry between them. For example, he and Torbjörn hurl insults at each other and dare each other to get more kills, he challenges Zarya to arm-wrestling match, tells her to keep training to handle a "real" weapon and mocks her strength if he eliminates her; and mocks Hanzo's Animal Motif by stating that he slays dragons. This is on top of the general mockery and boasting he does in combat, all aimed at rising to a challenge. In the Halloween comic, he dismisses Cassidy's ghost story as being for kids, and tells anyone too squeamish to leave the room. In all cases, though, he genuinely has respect for the people he's mocking — even his enemies, as he wishes to face them honorably. In "Honor and Glory", he responds to another soldier's heckling by stealing his drink.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: In-game, Reinhardt serves more as The Juggernaut, and Bastion is one of his biggest counters, as the bot can rip his shield, and him, to shreds in seconds. In story, Reinhardt (and all the Crusaders) is a Lightning Bruiser who is capable of tearing through dozens of Bastion units in seconds.
  • Gentle Giant: He's a hulking behemoth of an elder... who's more than happy to fix your problems for you, no matter how far he'll have to travel to fix them. Doesn't mean you should pick a fight with him, as the Dragons quickly learn.
  • Germanic Efficiency: References it in one of his voice lines. He himself, however, is not an example of it whatsoever, being a big ol' Boisterous Bruiser. He's probably talking about his armor.
    Precision German engineering.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: In-universe, and literally so! One bit of team banter has Lúcio complain about Reinhardt's taste in music. Reinhardt insists that he loves listening to "the classics, like Hasselhoff."
  • Glory Seeker: He seeks honor, glory and justice in every battle. Flashbacks show that he initially sought this only for himself, but Balderich's sacrifice taught him to be a team player, and now he desires this for his allies as well.
    JOOOOOIN me in GLOOORY!
  • Good Feels Good: Reinhardt doesn't care about any rewards the people he saves may give him, as he considers dispensing justice and making people happy rewarding enough.
To see justice done is its own reward. That, and a child's smile.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has a long scar running over his left eye, given to him by an OR14 in the Battle of Eichenwalde.
  • Go Through Me: The entire point of his barrier is to goad enemies into passing him, which allows his team to shoot at the enemy safely.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He was blonde in his youth, and despite the color of his hair fading, his idealism, kindness, and strong sense of justice remain.
  • Handicapped Badass: His "Bundeswehr" and "Lionhardt" skins reveal he's blind in one eye. Doesn't stop him from fighting for justice and hammering his foes to death.
  • The Heart: He kept Overwatch together with his strong morals and reminders of their original purpose. With his (forced) retirement, Overwatch quickly fell to corruption and disbanded in disgrace.
  • Heavily Armored Mook: Back in the day, there was an entire order of his kind — melee-oriented knights wearing Crusader powered armor. Gameplay-wise, his armor makes him resistant against small arms fire and his shield can tank a lot of damage for his team, so common tactics against HAM such as armor piercing attacks and flanking also work against him.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic:
    • Usually averted, but played straight with his "Bundeswehr", "Lionhardt", "Stonehardt", "Coldhardt", and "Lieutenant Wilhelm" skins.
    • Appears to be his own attitude until after leaving Overwatch. During his last battle in the Crusaders, he said he likes to feel the wind in his hair. Yet, even after this is immediately exploited, and results in Reinhardt getting his eye cut out, no images from his time in Overwatch (nor the flashback mission against Null Sector) have him wearing one.
    • Played straight with his default Overwatch 2 skin, which shows him without a helmet. An interaction with Brigitte has her ask him to put a helmet on, only for Reinhardt to brush her off.
  • Herd-Hitting Attack: He swings his Rocket Hammer in wide cleaving arcs, able to hit multiple enemies caught in its area of effect. It deals a hefty amount of damage, so keep your distance from him.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: A Reinhardt can — and will — use Charge to throw both himself and an unfortunate enemy off a cliff. As one of the few heroes who can move a mecha about to Self-Destruct, it's not uncommon for a Reinhardt to charge it away from his team, usually dying in the process... though if you don't feel like dying, his shield can easily block the explosion.
  • Heroic Willpower: Reinhardt will not be held back by his age and will never stop being a hero. No matter the circumstances.
  • Hidden Depths: He's surprisingly enough, a fan of D.Va, and if they're on the same team, he will meekly ask her if she can sign something for him before the match starts.
  • Hitbox Dissonance:
    • Reinhardt's Rocket Hammer has a humongous, hefty hitbox with every swing even for its size, though this can be forgiven, as it's a melee weapon in a first-person shooter where precision would likely be annoying. It doesn't end there though, as said hitbox isn't a semicircle as his animation would suggest, but a box, meaning that he has greater reach on the corners of his swings than in the center, which good Rein players will take full advantage of to hit you at markedly greater ranges.
    • Pinning enemies with Charge is less forgivable, as you have to be completely dead-on to the center of your target, otherwise you'll just graze them, knocking them aside and sending them flying (and once in a blue moon, it might still fail anyway). If you are on the course for pinning an enemy, though, there's a rather generous "suction" window before they get caught and as they're registering being "pinned," leading to moments like this. This effectively makes it a Grapple Move, and the latter scenario is mostly noticeable on tanks who have larger hitboxes to pin down, and once it hits someone, they're going to be directly in front of Reinhardt regardless of where they were "pinned".
    • Even Earthshatter isn't immune to this, as its hit detection is rather unspecific or inconsistent depending on who you ask, sometimes hitting enemies nowhere near the indicator, but other times completely whiffing.
  • Homage: Reinhardt's delusions of being an anachronous Knight in Shining Armor and seeing his enemies as monsters from a medieval romance seem to be inspired by Don Quixote.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Naturally, since he's so huge that nearly everyone looks tiny next to him. His protege Brigitte barely reaches his chest level, and she's at least six feet tall herself; a woman of average height would look positively miniscule by comparison.
  • Humongous-Headed Hammer: Reinhardt, a modern-day crusader in power armor, wields a jet-powered hammer that's larger than most of the main cast.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Reinhardt can be used to shut down other tanks. For example, his barrier can block Tank ultimates to save his team, his Charge lands more easily on them and chunks down their durability, and it's also a very effective tool for forcing an ulting tank away from his team. His Fire Strike and Rocket Hammer also go straight through barriers, making him effective against Winston and other Reinhardts. An exception is Zarya, as none of his attacks go through her Barrier and, in fact, charge it and make her stronger. He can win a battle of attrition against her, but that can also swing her way.

    I-Z
  • I Have This Friend: In one of his pre-battle conversations, he asks D.Va for an autograph, claiming it's "for a friend".
  • Immune to Flinching: Like all Tanks, Reinhardt has passive resistance to incoming knockback. Prior to Overwatch 2, he had his own unique passive, Steadfast, which gave him this bonus as his job as an immobile frontliner made him pretty vulnerable to harder forms of crowd control, with the passive given to soften the blow and make dislodging him harder.
  • Incoming Ham: When he enters the Dragons' base of operations, Reinhardt makes his presence known by challenging them to a fight.
Dragons! My name is Reinhardt Wilhelm, and I stand as champion for the innocents of this land. Face me now in honorable combat!
  • "Instant Death" Radius: The closer you are to him, the less likely you are to react in time to avoid his charge, and if he does land it on you, it's a death knell for almost anyone, especially if the Reinhardt is willing to throw the both of them off a cliff.
    • In a more downplayed example, Reinhardt can kill the average hero with three strikes of his hammer, which has wide arch of attack, and has an all around easier time hitting people than most heroes who need to aim to be effective. Unless you have an ability that can close the distance from him, being near Reinhardt in general means you're in for a world of hurt.
  • Insult Backfire: In an interaction with Symmetra she calls his armour medieval but he gives a sarcastically chivalric response.
    Symmetra: Armor? How positively medieval!
Reinhardt: I will take that as a compliment, my lady
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Subverted, during the Omnic Crisis, as depicted in Honor and Glory, he was downright ravishing, still having the long blonde hair he himself reminisces about when Pharah mentions an old poster of him. Yet, even in his old age, Reinhardt still looks extremely handsome.
    • Lampshaded by Ana who expresses some wonderment at how he has aged so well.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Downplayed. While he was still a playful Boisterous Bruiser in his youth during the Omnic Crisis, he would abandon his team just to take out his enemies, stating that the team "slowed him down". Seeing his commanding officer Balderich sacrifice himself helped mellow him out into the valiant, self-sacrificing Nice Guy we know him as today.
  • Jetpack: There's a large thruster built into his armor, which allows the Charge ability.
  • The Juggernaut: Downplayed. He can be stopped, but that won't be an easy task. First, he can plod forward slowly but unflinchingly while his Barrier Field is up, and while it can be taken down to stop his advance, it will take a lot of firepower and is much harder to do so when his teammates are returning fire from behind the barrier. Second, when he uses his Charge ability; get out of the way, because only a handful of abilities can stop that, and if he pins you to the wall, it's almost always an instant death.
  • Knight Errant: After being forced to retire from Overwatch, Reinhardt traveled the world with his engineer Brigitte doing good deeds wherever he can.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: He styles himself as a noble and heroic knight, and he acts the part to the fullest.
  • Knuckle Cracking: In "Dragon Slayer", he does this in order to intimidate two criminals from robbing a civilian. The same panel in which the deed is done also serves to demonstrate how huge he is compared to the average Joe. This combination leaves the two troublemakers visibly flinched.
  • The Lancer: Reinhardt played this role to his friend and mentor, Balderich von Adler, being the second-most powerful crusader during the latter's lifetime, and a young glory hog to Balderich's older, wiser leader.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice: A bit difficult to see under the beard, but Reinhard's chin is nothing to scoff at. This is made even clearer during his youth in Honor and Glory, where he only has a goatee, allowing the viewer to see his chin in all its glory.
  • Large and in Charge: The largest character in game, and can easily initiate teamfights with Earthshatter or a pinning Charge. He also led the strike team during the King's Row Uprising.
  • Large Ham: Befitting a Boisterous Bruiser, he's probably the hammiest character in the cast.
    "UNSTOPPABLE!!!"
  • The Leader: Of the Overwatch strike team that was deployed during the King's Row Uprising.
  • Leeroy Jenkins:
  • Lightning Bruiser: Zig-Zagged; while his normal foot speed is average, and his barrier slows him to a crawl, his Charge ability allows him to rocket forward faster than most characters can run away from. This allows him to rapidly close the distance to an enemy to introduce them to his hammer (or to pancake them, lethally, into the nearest wall). Honor and Glory suggests he was much faster in his youth when both he and his armor were in prime condition. He and Balderich show far more control during a charge than he is capable of in-game.
  • Light Is Good: One of his skins is decorated in white and gold colors, and is appropriately titled "Paragon".
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: In the Crusader's prime, he had some amazing flowing, golden locks.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Reinhardt's Barrier Field comes with a whopping 1,600 HP (for comparison, Tank characters generally hover around 500, and non-Tanks around 200) to make up for his lack of projectile options. It also recharges after a few seconds of being down (either by choice or by being broken) at a staggering rate of 225 shield per second.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: In "Honor and Glory", he doesn't have much of a reaction towards being blinded in one eye.
  • Manchild: A far more positive and fun example than most, but his Mr. Imagination tendencies coupled with his Boisterous Bruiser personality in battle, plus his sheer enthusiasm about everything, make him come across as this. He can even bellow "Again, agaaain!" like a kid on a roller coaster after respawning.
  • Manly Facial Hair: Beneath the helmet, he's got a full white beard and moustache that only add to his manly stature. In his younger years, he only had a blonde goatee while he was more hot-headed and reckless, in contrast to his mentor Balderich.
  • Manly Man: He's over 7 feet tall, old yet still fights for justice for its own sake, refuses to retire, dressed in Powered Armor styled after a knight, has the mannerisms of a knight, defends his teammates with a shield, beats his enemies with a rocket powered hammer, and constantly yells at the top of his lungs like he's having the time of his life.
  • Mark of Shame: Reinhardt's scar over his left eye serves as a daily reminder of him failing his mentor, Balderich, at the Battle of Eichenwalde.
  • Meaningful Echo: At the start of "Honor and Glory", Balderich says "I have been called. I must answer." in reference to being recruited to Overwatch, but he dies and sends Reinhardt in his place. When Brigitte protests Reinhardt returning to Overwatch after the way they forced him out originally, he answers, "I have been called. I must answer. Always."
  • Meaningful Name: Reinhardt means "strong counsel" in German. He was a member and adviser for Overwatch, until he was forced to retire due to advancing age.
    • Ironic Name: By contrast, it was this during his younger days as seen in "Honour and Glory", when he was a hot-head whose impetuosity almost lost his side the battle and indirectly led to the death of his mentor.
  • The Mentor: Trained his goddaughter Brigitte to fight alongside him.
  • Metallic Motifs: In "Dragon Slayer", he is given side by side comparisons to his armor, specifically about their durability and refusal to quit.
Reinhardt: (After Brigitte tells him about the condition of his armor) When has that ever stopped us before? Even old and worn, this armor can still serve its purpose. One day it may fall apart. But until that time, we will fight.
  • Mighty Glacier: His barrier is tough and his hammer packs a wallop, but to use it, he has to be in melee range, and his only movement ability is his Charge move, which is more intended as a Death or Glory Attack that's unwieldy to control and can leave him vulnerable.
  • Military Superhero: He was a decorated soldier before he joined Overwatch. His background is further implied with one of his skins being titled "Bundeswehr", which in Real Life is the unified armed forces of Germany.
  • Mr. Imagination: Visualizes a gang of roving thugs (named "The Dragons") as a green dragon and Lizard Folk on horseback.
  • My Greatest Failure: It was Reinhardt's foolhardiness during the battle for Eichenwalde that resulted in his mentor, Balderich, taking a mortal stab wound from an OR14. He shrugs it off and tells Reinhardt to continue his mission and get back to the soldiers he was supposed to protect in the first place. Reinhardt agrees, and Balderich stays in the castle to Hold the Line. In the end, the omnics were defeated, and he takes his final resting place on the throne as he dies from blood loss. On some level, Reinhardt knew this could've been avoided, and years later swears to redeem himself by answering Winston's call.
  • The Narrator: Of the special Halloween event Junkenstein's Revenge.
  • Nice Guy: Reinhardt loves helping people, and is among the most honorable and kind members of the Overwatch Organization. The man is essentially a physical personification of everything Overwatch stood for in its glory days.
  • No-Sell: Downplayed. Although his barrier can be broken with sufficient firepower, they will block massive damage abilities that are otherwise One-Hit Kill, to the tune of 1600 HPnote . You see that mecha about to self-destruct, Reaper going for Death Blossom, or hear Cassidy declaring that it's High Noon? Raise your shield, have your teammates hunker behind you, and watch as those ultimates get wasted for nothing.note
    • Played straight in the Honor and Glory animated short, where his attempt to charge an OR14 is brought to a halt by the robot's back legs. Orisa can do the exact same thing to Reinhardt in-game with her Fortify ability.
  • Nostalgia Filter: Is not particularly fond of 2070's kids' taste in "techno music", and tells Lúcio that he should listen to "classics" like David Hasselhoff.
  • Number Two: Unofficially said, but Reinhardt seems to be this to Winston for the reformed Overwatch. He has no problem issuing commands and taking charge when needed, but doesn't overstep when in the presence of Winston or Sojourn. Almost certainly because he has arguably the most experience out of the reformed Overwatch members, and doesn't have a problem taking a leadership role.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: He's devoted to protecting the innocent and is thus incredibly kind and polite to civilians, doing good for the sake of doing good at his own expense without recompense... except for seeing a child's happy smile. He's also chivalrous with Ana and they have positive interactions with each other, with Reinhardt saying that she is "looking as lovely as ever".
Reinhardt: [shaking the mayor's hand] To see justice done is its own reward. That, and a child's smile.
  • Oh, Crap!: He briefly freezes up during the Battle of Eichenwalde when he charges against an OR14, but the omnic stops his momentum dead and picks him up off the ground (armor, hammer, and all!). His look starts out as shock, followed by confusion, and ending with Oh, Crap! when it finally dawns on him what just happened and is about to happen.
  • Old Soldier: The second-oldest character so far at 61 years old, yet also the biggest and one of the toughest. It helps being clad head to toe in Power Armor. He was also one of the founding members of Overwatch, a small strike team that would later grow into one of the most prominent superhero organizations.
  • One-Hit Kill: Charge does 300 damage if he slams the pinned victim into a wall. Only other tanks have more than 300 health, and even if those smaller characters are armored or shielded, one quick hammer swing or Fire Strike while they're stunned is all it takes to finish them off. Even Zenyatta's Transcendence can't save a pinned ally, because the 300 damage is instant, and thus can't be healed. However, Reinhardt is very vulnerable while charging, so any move that causes a stun (such as Sleep Dart, Flashbang, or Chain Hook) will stop the charge instantly and Barriers from Zarya or Lúcio can also save a teammate. Without outside help, though, that character's a goner.
  • One of the Kids: Compared to the rest of his generation, Reinhardt gets along best with the younger members of the team. In fact he can even be more childlike sometimes. When Torbjörn talks about how its time to let the new generation protect the future, Reinhardt agrees, but states he will also be there along with them.
  • Only Sane Man: Reinhardt is the only original Overwatch member who is still relatively well-adjusted. Unlike Ana, who suffers guilt and PTSD over her actions, he is still a Boisterous Bruiser Blood Knight with an unwavering moral compass. Unlike Torbjörn, who has an intense dislike towards Omnics even today, Reinhardt didn't share such hatred even as he fought some berserk Omnics during the Crisis, understanding the good within them. Unlike Morrison, the destruction of Overwatch didn't compel him to become a law-breaking vigilante. And unlike Reyes, he doesn't resent the organization even after the way it collapsed and forced him out — his only motivation is to see justice done. Also deconstructed, as his departure essentially sounded the death knell for Overwatch.
    • Even in-game, if no member of his team uses a gun as their primary weapon, he (of all people) is the one to point out the lack.
  • One-Man Army: Due to his high durability, damage output, and enemy lockdown, a well-played Reinhardt can take on multiple enemies at once and keep them busy for awhile if he doesn't simply wipe them all out. This aspect of him is also shown in the "Dragon Slayer" comic, where he devastates a gang of thugs that have been terrorizing Europe.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • The most somber and serious we've ever seen Reinhardt is when he visits Eichenwalde, the site of his greatest failure and where many of his fellow Crusaders died, including his master Balderich. On that map, he talks in such an utterly unenthusiastic, deep, and solemn tone that players might think someone other than him is speaking at first.
    • In Honor and Glory, we see a very quiet, somber Reinhardt, standing before his fallen commander.
    • 2 gives him several interactions that are positively seething by Reinhardt standards (dropping his usual Big Fun attitude). He threatens Moira for her experiments, and takes Morrison to task for the latter abandoning what Overwatch stood for.
  • The Paragon: Of Valor, Justice, and Courage in particular. One of his skins is even called "Paragon", turning his Knight in Shining Armor bling up a notch.
  • Powered Armor: Covered from head to toe in his huge "Crusader" armor, sometimes sans helmet in his alternate skins.
    • The armor he wears in game is actually his second known suit. During his time as a Crusader, he wore a much more ornate set covered in gryphon motifs. Between joining Overwatch and leading the strike on Null Sector, he retired this suit for the simpler suit he is known for.
  • Reluctant Retiree: Was forced to retire by his Overwatch superiors when it was clear he was getting on in age. note  After that, he sat by and watched as the organization he swore to uphold fell to corruption and sedition until it disbanded in disgrace. When asked when he plans on retiring again, his answer is NEVER.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Turns out Overwatch actually wanted to recruit his mentor Balderich instead. When he died, Reinhardt joined Overwatch in his place.
  • Rocket-Powered Weapon: His primary weapon is his Rocket Hammer, which is a rocket-propelled hammer.
  • Scars Are Forever: Even after around 30 years, that scar on his eye has never fully faded.
  • Ship Tease: While in Overwatch, he is absolutely chivalric with Ana, further interactions in 2 suggest there may have been...chemistry with her at some point in the past.
Ana: Oh, Gibraltar...where has the time gone?
Reinhardt: Remember that night? Dancing in the command center until dawn?
Ana: We were foolish, weren't we?
    Reinhardt: Perhaps we still are...
  • Shockwave Stomp: A variant. Reinhardt's ultimate, Earthshatter, has him swing his hammer down so hard it produces a shockwave in front of him, leaving everyone hit by it stunned and completely at his mercy for three seconds.
  • Sickening "Crunch!": Reinhardt and any poor sap pinned down will hear this upon impact if the target dies, complete with a fleshy "SQUISH" to accompany it. While there's no blood to show for it, it's probably the most explicitly gory and violent sound effect in the entire game.
  • Sigil Spam: His "Lionhardt" skin has no less than six depictions of a lion.
  • Silver Fox: For 61 years old, he's quite good-looking and is impressively built underneath all that armor. When compared to images of him during the Omnic Crisis, he looks like he's barely aged ten years, let alone over thirty. Ana even remarks at how good he looks, believing that his lifestyle must agree with him quite well.
  • Simple, yet Awesome:
    • Reinhardt is incredibly easy to play, even if all you do is just right clicking to keep Barrier Field up. But any damage absorbed by the Barrier is damage not hitting your teammates, which means by the end of a match, it would have absorbed damage that would eviscerate your team a dozen times over. In the hand of a veteran, Reinhardt is an even more potent threat, what with his potential to instakill any non-tank, deal heavy area-of-effect damage, and disable the entire enemy team for a few seconds. It's telling that despite being ranked as 1 star in difficulty, he's always been among the top-tier Tank heroes, if not the top.
    • Key to his power as a Tank is how his Barrier Field can be activated on-demand with no cooldown whatsoever aside from its health. This gives him the unique ability among Tanks to quickly if not instantly react to incoming danger simply by turning his shield towards the perpetrator, without ever being tied up with cooldown management.
  • Stepford Smiler: Downplayed, but 'Honor and Glory'' puts his present-day boisterousness into focus and suggests that some of it is a lingering facade of his attitude from younger days, hiding some serious Survivor Guilt over Balderich's death.
  • Still Wearing the Old Colors: 30 years after the fall of the Crusaders, Reinhardt is still wearing the same armor as always and still fighting for the ideals that the group was founded on.
  • Stone Wall: While he has a lot of health and his barrier can soak up insane amounts of damage, the fact that he's limited to a melee weapon, can't attack while keeping his shield up, and his only ranged attack has a 6-second cooldown means he often does not have as many opportunities to deal damage as most other characters. Can be a literal stone wall in his "Stonehardt" skin, which gives him armor made out of rock.
  • The Storyteller: As part of Reinhardt's Hidden Depths, there are two occasions where he's demonstrated an ability to tell compelling stories. The first is the Halloween comic (and its corresponding Brawl, Junkenstein's Revenge), where everything is narrated by Reinhardt in very dramatic fashion. The second is a short scene in the Christmas comic, where he's reading to all of Torbjörn's children and they're gleefully hanging onto his every word. In Brigitte's trailer, she is seen reveling in Reinhardt's story with Torbjörn.
  • Sword Beam: His Fire Strike attack has him send a crest of fire at an enemy. It's incredibly effective due to being relatively fast, dealing 100 HP damage (reducing most non-tanks to half health), and it goes through most shields and characters, hitting everything in a straight line from its origin.
  • Survivor Guilt: It's implied that Reinhardt considers himself responsible for Balderich's death. And he isn't wrong. If he had stayed and protected his team, and not bull-rushed that OR14, then Balderich wouldn't have gotten mortally wounded rescuing him.
  • Take Up My Sword: Balderich gave him the Overwatch challenge coin and asked him to join the organization in his stead, when it was clear his mentor would not survive holding the line. In a literal example, Reinhardt then gave Balderich his hammer to aid him in his defense.
  • Taking You with Me: If Reinhardt is about to die anyway, a player can attempt a final Charge at an enemy. To guarantee that they die, it's probably best to aim for a pit, otherwise a healer or barrier may let them survive. This is even more effective against Winston under Primal Rage, which solves the problem of his additional hit points, and D.Va because even if her mecha survives, both she and it will fall to their doom... unless her Boosters are off cooldown.
    • A Dummied Out voice line from the Ana patch references this, with Reinhardt shouting "IT WAS WOOOOOORTH IIIIIIIIIT," supposedly as he takes an enemy — and himself — off a cliff.
  • The Lancer: Downplayed example, but he and Cassidy serve as this to reformed Overwatch under Winston.
  • Tiny-Headed Behemoth: Absolutely huge, the largest character in game in fact, with a head that looks disproportionately small. He might even be able to fit his entire head in his gloved hand! The comic Dragon Slayer and short Honor and Glory shows that most of it is actually just his armour, though — he's much more well-proportioned out of it.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In "Honor and Glory", Reinhardt was recklessly arrogant and often failed to see the bigger picture. Considering his age and behavior in the flashback. He may have been recently initiated and had only just finished training due to the fact that he thought little of protecting his teammates and disobeyed orders in favor of vanity and glory. Either way, he learned to put others before himself due to the fact that he might have unintentionally caused the fall of the Crusaders as well as the death of his friend.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: His in-game model, especially with Shoulders of Doom like that; his hands are actually bigger than his head. Subverted when he's out of his armor though, he looks quite well proportioned as shown in "Dragon Slayer" comic.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: In the comic "Dragon Slayer", it's revealed that he really likes currywurst, which is steamed fried pork sausage topped with a ketchup sauce mixed with curry powder. His partner Brigitte complains that their van often stunk of currywurst for a week whenever he eats it inside.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Honor and Glory reveals that Reinhardt kept the challenge coin that Balderich got when it was he, not Reinhardt, that was being recruited by the proto-Overwatch, and given to Reinhardt to tell him to Take Up My Sword just before his tragic Hold the Line. Years later, Reinhardt returns it to Balderich's remains on the throne of Eichenwalde castle as he swears to rejoin Winston's recalled Overwatch.
  • Trauma Button: Robots used during the Omnic Crisis seems to be a sore spot. When he sees Bastion (a model used in the frontlines of the war) in Torbjörn's workship during Ironclad, he immediately plans to kill him and chastises Torbjörn for keeping Bastion "as a pet", reminding him that they lost friends because of those very same omnics. By the end of Ironclad however, Reinhardt softens up to Bastion and even compliments his capabilities, even having no problem when Brigitte and Bastion join him to return to Overwatch.
  • [Trope Name]: One of his quips is just him shouting "Catchphrase!"
  • True Companions: With Torbjörn. This was cemented after he saved Torbjörn in operation White Dome. Since that day, Reinhardt is a firm friend of the Lindholm family and godfather of Brigitte.
  • Two First Names: Reinhardt and Wilhelm are both valid first names in German. However, Reinhardt is much more commonly seen as a surname, which is ironic considering it's his first name.
  • Unstoppable Force Meets Immovable Object: If two Reinhardts charge into each other, both of them are knocked on their backs as if they'd simultaneously used Earthshatter. The same thing also happens if a Reinhardt and a Doomfist use Charge and Rocket Punch at each other.
    • More in line with the name, if a Charge hits a Fortified Orisa, it's the immovable object that will win, and Reinhardt will be knocked down. As seen in Honor and Glory, this is a case of Gameplay and Story Integration, since older OR14s were capable of halting a charging Crusader dead in their tracks (something Reinhardt learns for himself, and is scarred for it); naturally, their successor units should be capable of the same feat.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds:
    • His pre-fight banter with Torbjörn involves the two of them ribbing each other, with Torbjörn insulting Reinhardt's intellect and Reinhardt laughing about how short Torbjörn is. However, one bit of pre-fight banter involves the two of them making a bet on who gets the most kills, loser buying drinks. Additionally, if a friendly Torbjörn dies, Reinhardt will be very upset and promises to avenge his fallen comrade. The 2016 Christmas comic showed that Reinhardt even reads to Torbjörn's kids and grandkids for Christmas. According to Brigitte, Torbjörn may have hated how Reinhardt was forced to leave Overwatch.
    • He also teases Zarya in pre-match dialogue, stating that if she keeps training, maybe one day she'll handle a "real" weapon. Zarya also has one of her own, where she accuses Reinhardt of being too nervous to arm wrestle her.
    • In the Halloween comic, he teases Cassidy and tells him his haunted story is a good one...for kids. He then starts to go into the story of Junkenstein's Revenge, which he also narrates in that season's brawl. Cassidy, in turn, taunts Reinhardt right back and asks him when he's going to get around to making the story scary.
  • Warrior Monk: His Wujing skin directly references the monk from Journey to the West. Between Reinhardt's armor, neck beads, and gigantic rocket-powered Monk's Spade for a weapon, he fits the bill.
  • Weapon Across the Shoulder: He often poses with his hammer slung across his shoulder. It's even his official picture.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: Reinhardt speaks the iconic line of this trope when he lands his ult on (or eliminates) enough enemy heroes.
Reinhardt: When all you have is a hammer, everyone else is a nail."
  • Wipe the Floor with You: In Honor and Glory, Reinhardt used his Charge ability to grab and wipe an enemy Bastion on the ground before throwing it at its allies.
  • Ye Goode Olde Days: Views the glory days of Overwatch as this, though can acknowledge it had its drawbacks. Other members like Mercy and Torbjörn don't share his perspective on this.
