    In General
The main characters of the story. At first, it was just Doremi, but she was joined by her friends Hazuki and Aiko and formed a team of three. Pop joined when she uncovered their secret. Onpu arrived as a rival, but later joined them when they saved her. Together, they had to take care of Hana to get their powers back. Later, Momoko arrived to aid them on their third attempt at becoming Witches. All but Hana choose to give up being Witches in the end.
  • The Ace: Aside from Doremi, who is meant to be the relatably inept Stock Shoujo Heroine, all her friends are highly talented and admired by other people:
    • Hazuki is a rich, well-mannered, Book Smart girl who gets the best grades.
    • Aiko is usually the best at sports, and generally the most practical and confident of the girls.
    • Onpu is a super-popular Idol Singer and a brilliant Witch apprentice.
    • Pop is Wise Beyond Their Years, loved by her classmates, and considered perfect by everyone except Doremi.
    • Momoko is a Supreme Chef, great student, and Dude Magnet too.
    • Hana is an Innocent Prodigy, and everyone finds her adorable.
  • Adoptive Peer Parent: Exaggerated; Doremi, Hazuki, Aiko and Onpu become the mothers of the baby Hana despite only being nine years old at the time, due to the Witch World's rule that anyone who first encounters a baby born from the blue rose in the Witch Queen's garden must look after her for a year. Momoko later joins them, though it's more of her own free will since she wasn't introduced yet when the Witch Queen imposed the rule on the Ojamajos.
  • The Apprentice: All of them are under the tutelage of Witches that some of them have called out and inadvertently cursed. They remain this way all series long except for several short and scattered scenes when they have their respective crystals.
  • Badass Adorable: They are all young girls who can use magic that can do almost anything. And they will use it if given a reason to. They even used their magic to save people from getting sick because of Majo Rika's Bad Luck Charm.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: All of them are sweet girls, but they have their limits, if pushed too far. For example in the first season, there's a moment when the first three apprentices, even Hazuki, get really mad at Majo Rika and call her out on her selfishness.
  • Character Development: Their experiences in running the Mahou-dou, raising Hana, and aiding in the affairs of their ever-expanding human and witch communities serve to mold them as wiser, kinder, and more mature individuals. The show itself doesn't end until the girls have graduated from elementary school and prepared themselves to pursue different paths rather than going into the same middle school together.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Doremi is pink, Hazuki is orange, Aiko is blue, Pop is red, Onpu is purple, Momoko is yellow, and Hana is white.
  • Curtains Match the Window: All the girls except Doremi (who has red hair and literal pink eyes), Momoko (who has blonde hair and green eyes) and Hana (who has blonde hair and brown eyes).
  • Cute Witch: They all almost always use their magic to help out others and for mundane tasks throughout the series. The few times they do fight, they have to use unorthodox methods such as conjuring fans, random elements; very rarely do they use simple energy attacks.
  • The Cutie: All of them look adorable due to the show's cutesy art style, and they are very kind and innocent girls. It helps that they are younger than the usual Magical Girl, as they're still in elementary school.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Each girl gets several of these as the series goes on. Though Momoko only gets these during Motto, Dokkan, and Naisho since she appeared in those seasons only. A similar case with Hana, though she gets them during Sharp too.
  • Dub Name Change: They are called "Witchlings" in the 4Kids dub.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: In the first two seasons (before they become a Five-Man Band), Doremi is the Naïve Everygirl, Aiko is the snarky tomboy, Onpu is the pretty Dude Magnet, and Hazuki is the smart/admirable one.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: At the end of Dokkan, the Ojamajos are asked if they wish to become full time Witches or return to being normal girls. They choose the latter, which Sixth Ranger Hana, who has to accept her powers in order to become the next High Queen, doesn't take too well.
  • Image Song: They each get one or more.
  • Leitmotif: Just like with the Image Song, they get at least one.
  • Little Miss Badass: A group of Badass Adorable little girls with magical powers. The girls primarily use their powers to help out and do other mundane things throughout the series. And when they actually come to fighting evil, they usually do so through unorthodox and impractical means and have to have their powers boosted in order to be successful.
  • Mama Bear: The first five girls towards Hana.
  • Magic Wand: Their Pollens, which they use to cast spells. In the 4Kids dub, these were changed to Wandalers and Wandawhirls.
  • Nice Girl: All of them are kind, empathetic, and friendly (the only exception is Onpu in the first season). This is evidenced by their using their powers to help others.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The main trio in the first season. Hazuki is shy, mild-mannered, and sweet (nice), Aiko is the snarkiest one and with her Brutal Honesty sometimes comes off as rude (mean), Doremi is friendly and compassionate, but also a bit bratty and immature (in-between).
  • Plucky Girl: They have shown their determination when protecting Hana and when doing the right thing, and they remain in the belief that things will always have a good end.
  • Sweet Baker: Doremi and her friends are all cute and nice Magical Girls and own a bakery in the third season.
  • Three Plus Two: At first it was just a team of three formed by Doremi, Hazuki and Aiko. Later they are joined by Onpu and Momoko. Hana is special and doesn't need to participate in Magical Stage. Pop was more or less considered part of the five in the first series and Sharp since she kind of was in-and-out, but by Motto! was replaced by Momoko.
  • Town Girls:
    • Femme - Hazuki (a shy, sweet, rich girl) and Onpu (the pretty, graceful actress/singer).
    • Neither - Doremi (a boy-crazy, pink-themed girl, who is also a brash Big Eater) and Momoko (the energetic but sweet Funny Foreigner).
    • Butch - Aiko (the rough Passionate Sports Girl).
  • Transformation Name Announcement: In the original Japanese, after transforming they always call out, "Pretty Witchy (name)-chi!". In the English dub produced by 4Kids, it was changed to, "Fa la de la dong ding, now I am a witchling!"
  • True Companions: These girls may only have been friends for a varying number of years, but they are very dedicated to one another and they will stand together no matter the hardships.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: All of them do this on occasion, typically changing into various small animals.

Doremi Harukaze, as of Motto design. Click on this to see her Ojamajo design

Doremi Harukaze is the titular girl and main protagonist of the series. She has a good nature, but she is clumsy and chronically unlucky. Her good nature has drawn many True Companions to her over the course of the series.

She became an apprentice when she called Majo Rika a "Witch", inadvertently triggering an age-old curse that turns Witches in Witch Frogs when they're uncovered. To undo the curse, Doremi has to become stronger and become a full-fledged Witch. Along the way, she uses her new found magic to help other people through their problems, but she has to keep it a secret.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Dojimi. Given to her by Kotake as a pun on her name and her clumsiness.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Had a crush on Akatsuki during the series, partially giving up on him because he had a girlfriend. She fully gets over him in the light novels.
  • Amusing Injuries: Suffers these while trying to wake Pop up during the first series, though she also gets them at other points too.
  • Ambidextrous Sprite: Like Aiko, part of her bangs will always switch sides no matter which way you look.
  • Ambiguously Bi: She's boy-crazy and pretty love-crazy in general; she's also very openly affectionate with the other girls and even says that she's always wanted to play the role of a dashing prince asking a princess to dance with him.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Kotake, with a bickering history going back to kindergarten.
  • Book Dumb: She has been known to get bad grades and frequently fails tests.
  • Born Unlucky: She's often on the receiving end of slapstick and embarrassment, which leads to her Character Catchphrase.
  • Butt-Monkey: She is chronically unlucky, gets hit hard every now and then, and overall just seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is lessened by Dokkan.
  • Character Catchphrase: "I'm the unhappiest girl in the world!"
  • Childish Older Sibling: Being a ditz, she's much more immature than her smart little sister Pop.
  • Cool Teacher: What she becomes as an adult in the light novels.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: She may be a Cute Clumsy Nice Girl on the outside, but do NOT do anything to threaten Hana or make her angry.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She's practically the poster girl!
  • Disappointing Older Sibling: Early in the series, her little sister Pop has no respect for her at all, often makes fun of Doremi, complains about her, and sees her as a talentless, irresponsible ditz who gets more attention than she deserves. She starts to appreciate her more over time.
  • The Ditz: She inherits the traits of every Magical Girl protagonist, so she's extremely ditzy, even after her Character Development.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the English version, she was renamed "Dorie Goodwyn."
    • The European Spanish version turned "Doremi" into "Do Re Mi", as separate words, although this seemed to be more of a pronunciation rule than a literal change given that the name was still written as Doremi in the title and all promotional materials. The Korean dub did a similar move by changing her name into "Do Remi."
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Dojimi. Doubles as an Affectionate Nickname.
  • Everybody Hates Mathematics: Doremi's worst subject in school is math, and she cites it as her least favorite thing in the level 8 exam.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In the 19 novel, she has ditched her trademark buns and her hairpin.
  • Expy: A clumsy, starry-eyed girl with Odango Hair who loves food, hates schoolwork and is often chided by a precocious, pink-haired younger kid? The Usagi Tsukino influence is clear to see.
  • Fiery Redhead: Passionate, emotional Genki Girl and often quick to anger.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish to Pop's responsible.
  • Forced Transformation: Suffers this during the Sharp movie when Pop, angry at Doremi for what happened early on, wished Doremi was a mouse via the Witch Queen's Heart.
  • Genki Girl: Doremi is really full of energy.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Doremi is boy-crazy, romantic, The Heart of the group, her signature color is pink, and has longer hair than any of her friends, but she is also a glutton (with her Trademark Favorite Food being steak), has a tendency to be aggressive every time she gets angry, and her regular outfits are not very feminine.
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: She and Pop don't really get along in early episodes. Except that, in this case, Pop is both "the smart one" and "the popular one" while Doremi is neither, but there's still Mutual Envy between them for different reasons.
  • The Heart: In a growing group of compassionate young girls, it's Doremi who unites them and expresses her love for her friends and family with no reservation.
  • Heroic BSoD: Doremi goes through one during the Dokkan series finale. Also occurs when Non-chan dies in Naisho.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: While the "unluckiest pretty girl in the world" schtick is often played for laughs, Doremi genuinely believes that she's a plain, untalented girl compared to her best friends.
  • The Heroine: As the title suggests she's the protagonist and also the one who keeps the True Companions together.
  • Idiot Hero: Even though she matures greatly over the series, she remains a poor student with a poorer sense of coordination.
  • Image Song: "Otome wa Kyuu ni Tomarenai!!", "Kitto Chanto Onnanoko", "Ice Cream Child", "'Su' no Tsuku Koibito", and "Merry-Go-Round."
  • Important Haircut: The beginning narration for Ojamajo Doremi 16 indicates Doremi has gotten a haircut when she believed that Kotake rejected her feelings.
  • Inept Mage: Particularly during S1, when many of her spells simply work differently than what she was expecting. These include turning into a police cruiser when she tried turning into a cop, ending up in a butterfly costume when she tried turning into a butterfly, and conjuring a large steak instead of the required dish when taking the level 9 exam.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: She takes a lot of hits every other episode.
  • Jumped at the Call: She was all too eager to become a Witch after she was told she had to become one after inadvertently turning Majo Rika into a Witch Frog.
  • Large Ham: Probably one of the most emotional and over-the-top characters.
  • Leitmotif: "Pretty Witch Doremicchi" plays a lot during the first series when she's determined to carry out her plans.
  • Lethal Chef: All the main girls learn to bake sweets for their shop in the third season...Needless to say, she's the worst at it. Doremi's sweets are the last to sell out in one episode.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Any time you push her Berserk Buttons (i.e threaten Hana, betray her, steal her steak), be prepared for a world of hurt...
  • Likes Older Men: In the anime all the boys she liked were between three, four, or five years older than her (she was even attracted to her sister Pop's teacher). However she seems to have left this trait as she grew.
  • Loser Protagonist: Clumsy, unlucky, Book Dumb and the most incompetent of the apprentices. She's the main character.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Anytime she loses her steak, she might get mad. Do NOT steal her steak.
  • Magical Incantation: Pirika pirilala poporina peperuto!
  • Magnetic Hero: Unlucky she may be, but she has a good enough heart that she's easy to get along with. Rinno lampshades this in the series finale.
  • Meaningful Name: Her first name is the first three notes of the musical scale.
  • Made of Iron: She crashed headfirst into Majo Reed's home and made a real mess and was none the worse for wear. Hazuki even lampshades it.
  • The Millstone: Sometimes due to her clumsiness and ditziness, she ends up hindering everyone's efforts and taking a step or two back. Lampshaded on occasion.
  • Naïve Everygirl: Doremi does get more mature as the series progress, but she's essentially the everygirl.
  • Nice Girl: Despite her clumsiness and ditzy demeanor, Doremi has a huge heart and seems to radiate a disarming aura. In fact, out of all the main characters, she's arguably the most compassionate.
  • Official Couple: Although Doremi and Kotake start out having tons of Belligerent Sexual Tension with occasional moments of Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other, it turns out that Doremi gave a Love Confession to Kotake when they were in 8th grade. This quickly turned into Unresolved Sexual Tension until two years later, Kotake finally replies to her.
  • Pink Heroine: She retains an entirely pink color scheme throughout her outfit, which changes between seasons.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Her theme color is pink and she is quite feminine. At least, more so than Aiko.
  • The Power of Friendship: This really is Doremi's true magic power: she's a brave and loving girl who can appeal to the good in anyone, and in doing so she forms the emotional core of the witch apprentices and their other relationships.
  • Puppy Love: With Kotake. Both happen to be a very young 8-12 when they develop feelings for each other, though they don't exactly know how to really act on them yet.
  • Red Is Heroic: She is the main hero of the story and she has red hair.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Hazuki's Blue. She's even Color-Coded for Your Convenience in this case!
  • Shout-Out: In one of the TCG cards, Doremi is dressed up as Luffy from One Piece.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With Pop. She is immature and self-centered (at first...) while Pop is Wise Beyond Their Years.
  • Signature Headgear: A music note in one of her odango, further emphasizing her Meaningful Name.
  • Slipknot Ponytail: Different hairstyle, but same idea. Her Odangos come loose when her crystal shatters near the end of Sharp.
  • Stock Shoujo Heroine: Doremi is a ditzy, Book Dumb, and gluttonous Cute Clumsy Girl but has a kind heart, a magnetic personality, and serves as The Heart of her group of friends.
  • Terrible Artist: This often occurs in the first season, where no one can hardly tell what Doremi's charms are supposed to resemble. By season 4, this becomes less of an issue because Doremi's Butt-Monkey status was played down to show Hana's inexperience in having "big kid responsibilities."
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She's crazy about steak. Too bad fate never lets her have any.
  • Town Girls: The Neither to Hazuki's femme and Aiko's Butch
  • Verbal Tic: "Bu-bu-buu!", which is said whenever she is frustrated or annoyed by something. It's mimicked by her "daughter", Hana.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Whenever she's about to eat some steak, either someone else will eat it, the steak disappears into thin air if magic was used to make it, or she is otherwise refused it.

    Hazuki Fujiwara (Reanne Griffith)

Voiced by: Tomoko Akiya (Japanese), Rebecca Soler (English), Mayra Arellano (Latin-American Spanish), Carolina Tak (European Spanish), Giovanna Papandrea (Italian)

Hazuki Fujiwara, as of Motto Design. Click on this to see her Ojamajo design
"Paipai ponpoi puwapuwa puu!"

Hazuki is Doremi's best friend at the start of the series and is usually considered the second Witch Apprentice. She is a shy but very kind-hearted girl who would help virtually anyone.

She became an apprentice along with new girl Aiko when they follow Doremi to the shop after one of Doremi's spells backfired. She and Aiko both called Doremi a Witch, but Doremi wasn't cursed because she wasn't a full-fledged Witch yet. Majo Rika made her into an apprentice to help keep the secret.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: She is drawn to Masaru despite his juvenile delinquent tendencies, and has found out he is more Troubled, but Cute.
  • Ambiguously Bi: She likes Masaru but also seems interested in tough or handsome women like Candy - causing her to spawn Wingding Eyes in the shape of hearts.
  • Amusing Injuries: Suffers these while trying to wake Pop up during the first series.
  • Babies Ever After: It has recently been revealed that she becomes pregnant with Masaru's baby in the Light Novels.
  • Balloon Belly: In an episode of Dokkan, Hazuki is forced to pretend she is Hana during a school trip due to Hana turning back to her original form and also has to eat her dinner alongside her own.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: A smart, cute girl who wears glasses.
  • Book Smart: Usually gets the best grades of her class.
  • Brainy Brunette: Consistently gets the highest grades out of the girls and is a brunette.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Gentle Girl to Masaru's Brooding Boy.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Masaru.
  • Covert Pervert: You'd think shy little Hazuki simply would blush at the mention of peeping a look at Kotake undressing.
  • Ditzy Genius: She gets good grades at school and is very smart, but she has repeatedly shown that she can be as naive and clumsy as the rest of her teammates.
  • Dub Name Change: Hazuki was renamed "Reanne Griffith" in the English dub. In Latin America and most European countries (except for Italy and Spain), she was renamed "Emelie"; in the Italian dub, she was renamed "Melody"; and in the Korean dub, she was renamed "Jang May."
  • Generation Xerox: Hazuki's mother almost always made her decisions for her. Hazuki started doing the same thing to Hana until her mistake was pointed out.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: As an adult, she becomes a professional violinist.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Her motivation to become a witch apprentice was (besides hiding Doremi's secret) the fact that she thought that would help her express her true opinions and ideas, since she has no decision of her own within her own home.
  • Interclass Friendship: Hazuki comes from a wealthy family and is childhood friends with Masaru, who is implied to be of a lower class.
  • Image Song: "Tsukiyo no Mahou", "Ashita no Watashi", "Mimi wo Sumashite", "Naisho no Housoku", and "OK!"
  • Lady And A Scholar: She's the smartest of the main characters (along with Onpu), and has always been very kind and polite.
  • Leitmotif: The upbeat version of "Pretty Witch Hazukicchi" tends to play whenever Hazuki is inspired.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Both she and Onpu are very feminine. She's the shy and demure Nice Girl (Light Feminine) to Onpu's manipulative diva (Dark Feminine), mainly in season 1.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: She is an only child in a wealthy family. She is also timid and doesn't really seek out friends other than those who have befriended her when she was younger.
  • Ojou: Of the rich, quiet, and ladylike Nice Girl type.
  • Opaque Lenses: They occasionally turn into Scary Shiny Glasses.
  • Out of Focus: Especially later in the series, she and Aiko (to a lesser extent) are mostly ignored in favor of the other main characters. They also tend to not always be drawn as well.
  • The Quiet One: She isn't very talkative. When she does speak, her voice tends to be quiet and soft.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Doremi's Red. She's the more calm of the two while Doremi is the more active and hotblooded.
  • Renaissance Man: She is able to play the violin, an electric keyboard, do ballet, do traditional japanese dance, calligraphy, be a director, knit, sew, swim, origami and apparently also play the piano. Justified, as her mother often involved her in multiple activities (usually without even consulting her).
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Usually when she's scared (or teasing Doremi), because she's not a particularly frightening character.
  • Ship Tease: She gets plenty of this with Masaru Yada to the extent that her friends act as Shippers On Deck regarding their "friendship", and they do eventually become an Official Couple in the Light Novel. The ship teasing could also constitute for some of the Les Yay shipping as well.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's painfully shy and has low self-esteem, especially in the beginning.
  • Slut-Shaming: In Ojamajo Doremi 16, someone tries to spread rumors that Hazuki Really Gets Around and posts photos of her and Yada in front of a love hotel (which they were standing in front of by coincidence).
  • Signature Headgear: She always wears an orange bow that gathers her hair in a half ponytail.
  • The Smart Girl: She gets excellent grades in school and has figured things out before everyone else, including Onpu, most of the time.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The subs call her Hadzuki. This is probably to emphasize that her name is spelled with the kana for "tsu." With the dakuten, it's pronounced "zu" anyway, but that spelling indicates how her name is written.
  • Survival Mantra: Aiko gave her the idea to say "Majo Rika" over and over to help counteract her fear of ghosts. It seldom works.
  • Town Girls: The Femme to Doremi's Neither and Aiko's Butch.
  • Twice Shy: With Masaru. Both are quite shy when someone hints at the relationship between the two of them.
  • Vocal Evolution: Her voice was a higher version of Tomoko Akiya's normal speaking voice before it became progressively higher-pitched.
  • Uptown Girl: She is the only daughter of a very wealthy family and her childhood friend Masaru is apparently a boy from a middle class family or not so well-off.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She is deathly afraid of ghosts to the point that she nearly went insane in one drama CD.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She's an Ojou who is humble, gets good grades, likes violin and ballet, and is known for her passive and gentle nature.

    Aiko Senoo (Mirabelle P. Haywood)

Voiced by: Yuki Matsuoka (Japanese), Annice Moriarty (English), Ana Lucia Mendez (Latin-American Spanish), Diana Torres (European Spanish), Serena Clerici (Italian)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eca9a7ca202122e6a24322068b35df951231385089_full_7897.jpg
Aiko Senoo, as of Motto design. Click on this to see her Ojamajo design

"Pameruku laluku laliloli poppun!"

Aiko is Doremi's second best friend who moved in from Osaka. She upstaged a lot of students and quickly got on Doremi's bad side at first, but her going to Aiko's house and seeing Aiko's father sparked a change of heart. When it became clear that Aiko's dad wouldn't make it to a parent-teacher meeting, Doremi used her magic to make a temporary clone, unaware that the real one made it after all.

Aiko became an apprentice when she and Hazuki followed Doremi to the shop after Doremi's spell backfired. There, she and Hazuki learned that Doremi was a Witch Apprentice and that they, in order to keep the secret, would have to become Apprentices, too.

  • Accent Adaptation: The 4Kids dub renders her Kansai accent as a country drawl.
  • Amusing Injuries: Suffers these while trying to wake Pop up during the first series.
  • Ambidextrous Sprite: Like Doremi, her hairstyle will always switch sides no matter which way you look.
  • Balloon Belly: In an episode of Dokkan, Aiko is forced to pretend she is Doremi due to Hana turning back into her original form and also has to eat Doremi's dinner along with hers.
  • The Big Girl: She is the most athletic of the girls and physically the strongest despite not being the tallest of them.
  • Book Dumb: Not as much as Doremi, but she's not the best student since she sometimes has to rely on Hazuki to help get her school work done.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Fitting, since she's a tomboy.
  • Brutal Honesty: Aiko doesn't hold back her thoughts, and this causes a bit of problems with Hazuki and Doremi at first.
  • Daddy's Girl: She lives only with her Bumbling Dad, and while she's somewhat snarky towards him, they are still close.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Aiko is very sarcastic, especially towards Doremi. Her classmates find her comments hilarious.
  • Dub Name Change: Aiko was renamed "Mirabelle Haywood" in the English dub. In Latin America and most European countries (except for Italy and Spain), she was renamed "Sophie"; in the Italian dub, she was renamed "Sinfony"; and in the Korean dub, she was renamed "Yoo Sarang."
  • Edible Ammunition: Launches several Takoyaki balls at Leon. He blocks it and begins chowing down while mocking her.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Nobuko seems to have a romantic attraction for her.
  • Forehead of Doom: Aiko's character design as of Motto! accentuates her forehead and becomes one of her defined physical traits. The Ending Theme of Na-i-sho highlights this, and there are some scenes in the show where her forehead will flash just for laughs.
  • Half-Witted Hillbilly: The English dub portrays her as this, what with a Southern accent, a Hayseed Name, and being rather Book Dumb.
  • Hayseed Name: In the English dub, as mentioned; kids even made fun of her by calling her "Hayseed."
  • Iconic Outfit: Aiko wears a blue jumper skirt, with her hair tied in small Twin Tails, whenever she visits her mom. It's a very memorable because it's a definitive She Cleans Up Nicely moment and has a more "feminine" appearance than her usual overalls/jeans.
  • The Idiot from Osaka: While not an idiot, Aiko is a brash, Book Dumb tomboy who is known for her distinctive kansai-dialect and often complains when others imitate it. She has the Osaka comedy routine down and is a very smart bargainer.
  • Idiot Hair: Again, not really an idiot, but she has it.
  • Image Song: "Aiko ni Omakase!!", "Pa tto Ikou!!", "Aruki da Sou yo", and "Yuugure Buranko", "Ao no Kanata he". The English dub gives her another, titled "Mirabelle's Song."
  • Innocently Insensitive: Didn't make a very good impression on Doremi and Hazuki when she first transferred, casually saying that Doremi's name was weird and implying Hazuki was forgettable. After getting to know Doremi better, she apologizes to the two. Two seasons later, she passes this lesson on to Momoko.
  • It's All My Fault: Aiko misblamed herself for causing the rift between her parents until told otherwise by Atsuko in Sharp.
  • Leitmotif: The energetic "Pretty Witch Aikocchi" plays whenever Aiko takes control.
  • Missing Mom: Her parents are divorced and she lives with her dad.
  • New Transfer Student: She transferred from Osaka in the third episode of the first series.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Despite Aiko speaking with a Southern accent in the 4Kids dub, it tended to slip on a few occasions and reveal her voice actress Annice Moriarty's Valley Girl voice.
  • Overalls and Gingham: Her trademark outfit for the first two series, though in the original, she just wore them for being a tomboy. However in the 4kids dub, its the reason they have a country accent and make farm jokes.
  • Out of Focus: Later in the series, she (along with Hazuki) is mostly ignored in favor of the other main characters.
  • Paper Fan of Doom: Wielded one during Motto!, which gives Toyoken the idea for their Boke and Tsukkomi Routine. Provides the page picture.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Onpu's Blue, made prominent in episode 34 of Sharp.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Usually with Momoko or Onpu. The former pairing being evident in the Motto movie while the latter is prevalent after she lets Hana get sick.
    • In episode 11 of Na-i-sho, it's implied that Aiko might return Anrima's (her childhood friend) feelings. They do eventually begin dating between the Time Skip and 16, but by the time Aiko reappears in 16, she had already broken up with him.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Aiko's last name is romanized differently on a bunch of official merchandise. Sharp merchandise lists it as "Senoo", Motto merchandise lists it as "Seno", and Dokkan merchandise lists it as "Senoh."
  • Supreme Chef: Part of her girly streak is that she's probably the best cook of the group along with Momoko.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Aiko is very athletic and good at sports (particularly track and field, which she pursues in 16) but cannot swim. In Na-i-sho, she learns how to swim thanks to Hazuki, but even then she doesn't have much confidence in swimming.
  • Tomboy: She has displayed in interest in sports that most boys in school prefer, and she is very much an athlete.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite her tomboyish appearance, personality and hobbies, Aiko enjoys doing girly things just as much as the other girls, like working in a flower shop, baking, taking care of a baby. She also has no objection to wearing a Cute Witch outfit.
  • Town Girls: The Butch to Doremi's Neither and Hazuki's Femme.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She loves her takoyaki! She's also quite passionate about good roasted sweet potatoes.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: At times with Doremi and Onpu.
  • You Go, Girl!: Aiko is the most athletic girl in her grade, and even bested Leon in a game of basketball. This was also invoked when her class expected her to go against Class 5-1 for their swim relay, since Class 5-1 has Kotake, Ito, Hasebe, and Yada, boys of whom are very good at sports.
    • In the light novels, she grows up to become an Olympic athlete.

Pop Harukaze, as of Motto design. Click on this to see her Ojamajo design

"Pipito purito puriton peperuto!"

Pop is Doremi's younger sister and tends to be rather snarky about Doremi's tendencies. She secretly admires her, but she is more responsible and more serious than Doremi. She has several friends at the Kindergarten.

She became an Apprentice when Majo Rika, out of desperation to get away from her to help the Ojamajos against Majo Ruka, stopped pretending to be a plush doll and fled. Pop followed her to the shop and confronted the girls on what was happening. Majo Rika made her an apprentice so as to, once again, keep the secret. She proves herself to be more capable a Witch than Doremi, but her inability to stay up late locks her at the bottom level until Sharp.

  • The Ace: Basically the opposite of her sister: Pop is Wise Beyond Their Years, the top student in her class, very popular among her classmates, and is also a very good witch apprentice.
    • However this is eventually deconstructed as more of Pop's limitations and Doremi's virtues come to light, showing that she's not really above behaving as childishly as Doremi, she's somewhat annoyed by her popularity and, while still very proficient with magic, it took her two whole years instead of the usual six months to clear all of her witch exams because she was unable to stay up at night.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: Pop may be the younger sister, but she has a reputation of being more mature than Doremi.
  • Always Someone Better: Pop may seem like the better role model, and is given more favor over Doremi. On the other hand, she secretly envies Doremi and feels that their parents love her more, as their mother taught Doremi how to play the piano when Pop wasn't given a chance to.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Pop irritates Doremi to no end because of her obnoxious attitude. In the beginning, Pop even calls Doremi by her first name, as though she refuses to acknowledge that Doremi is the older sister, but midway through #, she starts calling her "big sis" (onee-chan) instead after they resolve their conflicts.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension:With Kimitaka, very similar to the relationship her sister has with Kotake.
  • Big Sister Worship: When Pop was a baby she actually admired her older sister Doremi and looked up to her, to the point of following her everywhere around to be with her, however, Doremi's jealousy towards Pop, added to the fact that her mother refused to teach Pop the piano (which she did with Doremi), caused Pop to distance herself from her sister. Part of her Character Development involves realizing that she still adored her sister.
  • Bit Character: Pop became a witch apprentice in the middle of the first series and gained a larger role during Sharp (to the point of receiving her own Image Song, even!), only to be Demoted to Extra once Momoko appears. The official page lists her on the same page of Doremi's family members, while the rest of the Ojamajos each get their own pages.
  • Blush Sticker: The biggest example in her case is during one episode of Naisho when Hana-chan causes a "Freaky Friday" Flip between the two.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Initially, she was arrogant and liked to tease Doremi. Then comes the Character Development...
  • Bully Hunter: She defends anyone being bullied in her class and everyone loves her for it.
  • Can't Catch Up: She's considered a witch prodigy, but she doesn't start taking her tests until #, and finally gets her crystal in the penultimate episode of Dokkan.
  • Child Prodigy: It's a pity she rarely spends time on casting magic.
  • Class Princess: At her school, she's popular for being nice, responsible, and a Bully Hunter who stands up for her classmates, and most people see her as perfect.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Hana.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Her voice in the English dub is quite a migraine to the ears, even when compared to the main characters.
  • Dub Name Change: Pop was renamed "Caitlyn Goodwyn" in the English dub. In Latin America and most European countries, she was renamed "Bibi", except by Spain, where she was named "Popú" (the Japanese language version of her name, which is still not the official way it should be rendered abroad), and in the Korean dub, she was renamed "Do Ttomi."
  • Dude Magnet: All her male friends and Kimitaka are in love with her.
  • Expy: She is in many ways Chibiusa, especially her attitude towards Doremi reminds of Chibiusa's relationship with Usagi (Usagi herself is similar to Doremi like the typical mahou shoujo heroine).
  • Foil: To her sister. While Pop is The Ace and Doremi is a clumsy Loser Protagonist, they actually have a lot in common. They are both The Heart and The Leader of their group of friends, very helpful and protective towards the other students of their class, they act the same way when they have a crush, both can be stubborn and prone to anger. And they both a rivalry with an Alpha Bitch classmate, Doremi with Reika Tamaki, and Pop with Reika's cousin Erika, as lampshaded in-universe, and both have a Belligerent Sexual Tension relationship with one of their classmates.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The Responsible (mature and Book Smart) to Doremi's Foolish (immature and Book Dumb).
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Happens to her during an episode of Naisho, when Hana uses her magic to switch bodies with her.
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: She and Doremi don't really get along in early episodes. Except that, in this case, Pop is both "the smart one" and "the popular one" while Doremi is neither, but there's still Mutual Envy between them for different reasons.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards Hana for an episode when even she passes her academically in Dokkan, not wanting help from the Sixth Ranger to pass her next exam until they talk things through.
  • The Heart: Among her schoolmates, she is the one who usually keeps things together and from getting too chaotic.
  • Heavy Sleeper: This is the reason why Pop barely made any progress for her witch exams. It's not because she's incompetent at magic (she's better than Doremi, even!) but the thing is, nighttime is the only time the portal to the Witch World opens, and she can never wake up for that. And whenever Doremi and the others tried to wake her up for the exams...
  • Image Song: Only gets one: "Hop Step Pop." The song "Pop na Yuuki" might also count if you ignore the fact that it was sung by a vocalist other than Pop's voice actress and was only used as the ending theme to the first Non-Serial Movie.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be quite patronising and bossy towards her sister Doremi, but (mostly) nice to everyone else. Later on in the series, she starts to mellow out, and admits several times in the series that she would never want to part from Doremi which is exactly why she turns down the offer to become a witch at the end of Dokkan!.
  • Leitmotif: The marching tune in "Sekai Ichi Fuko na Bishoujo!?" usually plays during Pop's appearances and is noted as Pop's theme song.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Especially in the earlier series, but she has been known to reply with sarcasm and witty one-liners when Doremi makes a statement.
  • Love Confession: Receives one from Kimitaka before he moves away to Hokkaido.
  • Mature Younger Sibling: She acts more mature and responsible compared to Doremi. And even in an episode of Dokkan Hana comments that Pop looks like the older sister instead of Doremi.
  • Mouthy Kid: She's very snarky and annoying towards Doremi, but most of the time, she has a point and is considered the more reasonable one of the two sisters.
  • Oblivious Younger Sibling: For the first half of the first series. Subverted after she joins the Ojamajos in regards to both magic and her relationship with Doremi.
  • Parental Title Characterization: Pop calls Doremi by her first name in the first two seasons of the show, and it's been shown multiple times that she doesn't respect Doremi and even feels as though she is an embarrassment to the family. However, by the end of the second season, their relationship has improved for the better, and in the beginning of the third season, she begins calling Doremi "onee-chan" (big sister).
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She has pink hair, and ultimately a good-natured girl.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With Doremi. She is Wise Beyond Their Years while Doremi is immature and self-centered (at first...).
  • Spell My Name With An S: Pop's name is romanized as "Poppu", but official merchandising and Pop's nameplate in episode 27 of the first season spells her name as "Pop." The early English-speaking Ojamajo Doremi fan community called her "Poppu" until the official romanization became more popular.
  • Tagalong Kid: She zigzags this. She joined the Ojamajos in the middle of Season 1, but she wasn't present nearly as often as the others and was just sort of in and out. She managed to make the girls and all-female Five-Man Band in Sharp, but was replaced by Momoko come Motto. Dokkan sealed it when Hana joined the Ojamajos as The Sixth Ranger.
  • Team Mom: To her classmates. She's quick to stop any bullying she sees.
  • The Unfavorite: The reason she resented Doremi early on was because their mom taught Doremi how to play piano and not Pop, not knowing the whole story.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She has proven herself to have a much higher degree of responsibility when compared to others kids her age. This is mentioned In-Universe, and one of the reasons she is The Heart of her class.

    Onpu Segawa (Ellie Craft)

Voiced by: Rumi Shishido (Japanese), Anne Marie Nestor (English, season 1), Gaby Ugarte (Latin-American Spanish), Carmen Podio (European Spanish), Emanuela Pacotto (Italian)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bb5ff749e5dc95a59a3e00c3db1667131231385164_full_9289.jpg
Onpu Segawa, as of Motto design. Click on this to see her Ojamajo design

"Pururun purun famifami faa!"

Onpu is a wildly popular child idol and a prodigy Witch apprentice. She initially appears as nice and friendly, but she quickly identifies herself as their rival soon after. She causes trouble for the girls, either deliberately or as collateral damage from wanting to get away from her own troubles.

She became an apprentice when she caught and called Majo Ruka a witch, resulting in her being cursed. After hearing about Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko from Majo Ruka, Onpu becomes resolved to outclass them. She was even given a charm that would let her withstand the punishment from using forbidden magic, and she abused it a lot over the series. As the series went on, she takes levels in kindness with occasional Pet the Dog moments before cementing a Heel–Face Turn by saving the other Ojamajos from being cursed, officially joining the group come Sharp.

  • The Ace: Onpu's magic casting abilities are generally better than the rest of the girls, and she's the only one who learned the writing system of the Witch World. In the first series, she was known as a prodigy because she passed the first three witch exams in one sitting. She's also a talented singer and actress, a popular Dude Magnet, is mentioned to be a good student while also being busy with all her idol work, and there's at least one gag of Onpu outdoing Aiko at athletic stuff, even if Aiko is the Passionate Sports Girl of the group.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Onpu's daydream in Na-i-sho episode 10 depicts her ideal man as a bad boy.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Her head and hairstyle resemble a musical note.
  • Berserk Button: Tooru and Hana found out the hard way that when you underestimate showbiz (even in an effort to give her a break), she gives you quite a tongue-lashing.
  • Blow You Away: Uses her Royal Patraine magic to conjure a whirlwind against Tooru. It doesn't work.
  • Brutal Honesty: She admits to speaking bluntly.
  • Child Popstar: Onpu is one of the most famous chidols (child idols) of the now.
  • Child Prodigy: Onpu was able to reach level 6 by passing the first three tests in one sitting, earning her the reputation of being a prodigy in the Witch World.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has purple hair and eyes.
  • Dark Magical Girl: Before her Heel–Face Turn, she was selfish and used magic to solve all of her problems. She was also not above using forbidden magic on trivialities like avoiding green peppers and outright says she would most likely use more forbidden magic to solve an issue some previous forbidden magic caused.
  • Demonic Possession: A demon possessing her played this for laughs and did so solely to play a prank on Doremi and Momoko.
  • Disappeared Dad: He is seldom home since his job as a train conductor requires an extensive amount of his time and keeps him from visiting as often as he would want.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Onpu cannot stand green bell peppers. She later resists her inability in order to convince Hana to eat one of the recipes the girls made for her involving vegetables.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Onpu was renamed "Ellie Craft" in the English dub. In the Latin American and most European countries (except for Italy and Spain), she was renamed "Nicole"; in the Italian dub, she was renamed "Lullaby"; and in the Korean dub, she was renamed "Jin Bora."
    • The French dub gave her the name "Loulou" in the first season before ultimately changing her name into "Nicole" from # onward.
  • Dude Magnet: Onpu is, without a doubt, extremely popular with the male persuasion. On her first day of school, the boys swooned in her presence, and she even has her own fan club at school.
  • Evil Diva: Before her Heel–Face Turn, although she was more 'misled' than 'evil'.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko pre-Heel–Face Turn; it's more downplayed since she isn't "evil", per se.
    • Like Doremi, Onpu's name is music-based. Doremi was the apprentice of Majo Rika, while Onpu was working with her evil Arch-Enemy Majo Ruka. She was the Dark Magical Girl at the time, so being a counterpart to her was to be expected.
    • Like Hazuki, Onpu is a smart Child Prodigy. However, she was also very cunning and used said smarts to get her way rather than help others (most of the time).
    • Like Aiko, Onpu has a lot of common sense, is pretty savvy, sometimes brutally honest, and was originally a cool New Transfer Student.
  • Fanservice Model: Onpu does bikini photoshoots in her idol photobooks, which can come of as a bit Squicky when you consider her age.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With the first three Ojamajos. She started off as a stand-offish, self-centered Jerkass who used magic for her own personal gain. Then during the final exam, she had to work with her rivals without cheating. It was only because of her that they passed in time. After being saved from a 100-year slumber , Onpu became one of their closest friends.
  • Foil: To Doremi. Her The Ace status is a contrast to Doremi's Loser Protagonist, and their names are both based on musical notes. Onpu was also originally introduced as an Evil Counterpart of sorts to Doremi as well.
  • Former Child Star: Lapses into this in Ojamajo Doremi 16, where she has trouble getting more mature roles because she's unable to break out of her child image.
  • The Gadfly: In season 1, especially, Onpu often antagonizes other people with a flippant remark, only to sit back and watch the fallout. In the later seasons, she still makes teasing remarks, but they're less hurtful.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Onpu is the most feminine and graceful of the main girls along with Hazuki. Her theme color is purple.
  • Gratuitous English: "We can do anything if we do it together~"
  • Heel–Face Turn: She was first Majo Ruka's apprentice, and switched sides by Sharp.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She saves the girls by using Mind Control to apply Laser-Guided Amnesia to a group of people (every student from their class and several of their parents). This gives karma a chance to catch up and put her in a coma.
  • Hypocrite: She talks with Brutal Honesty, but does not like when Momoko does the same to her (she denied she was truly angry about it, though her Cross-Popping Veins before going home might have betrayed that).
  • Iconic Outfit: Even though Onpu's devil outfit has appeared on a trading card, it became wildly popular among fans. It was released as a figurine that was re-released, and there's a lot of fanart of Devil Onpu.
  • Idol Singer: Onpu is a popular singer.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Onpu was one of Rumi Shishido's defining roles, along with Mikako from Neighborhood Story, and has been closely associated with her due to their similar backgrounds.
  • Innocently Insensitive:
    • Her words put Tamaki to tears, but it's questionable how "innocent" she really was at that point.
    • After hearing that Naomi was teased over entering puberty, Onpu felt just as bad as Doremi because she was the one that had pointed her out to the other girls during their health exam.
  • Image Song: "half point", "We Can Do!", "Polar Star", "Cherry Bomb!!".
  • It's All About Me: Pre-Character Development, Onpu was a downright selfish Jerkass who really only cared for herself. She even makes a note of it during the Grand Finale when helping to snap Doremi out of her Heroic BSoD.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Onpu managed to get away with abusing her magic thanks to a magical amulet she wore that took the karma in itself, given to her by Majo Ruka. Majo Rika warned them that this was only a temporary "solution", and that shit would hit the fan as soon as the trinket wasn't able to absorb more bad karma. Of course, Onpu used forbidden magic so much that the trinket was beginning to rot away, so when she used a LARGE quantity of magic to save the other girls and herself via giving Laser-Guided Amnesia to many people, the amulet finally disintegrated and Laser-Guided Karma hit her hard, sending her into a coma.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Does this to all of the Muggles when they find out that the girls are witches.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She (ab)used Mind Control magic throughout the later half of the first series after her introduction before finally getting hit with this just as she was using it at a time when it was needed to stop a potential Forced Transformation.
  • Leitmotif: "Pretty Witch Onpucchi"
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Both she and Hazuki are very feminine. Mainly in season 1, she's a manipulative diva (Dark Feminine) to Hazuki's shy and demure Nice Girl (Light Feminine).
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She's pretty, popular, selfish, and spoiled, but eventually becomes a loyal friend thanks to Character Development.
  • Meaningful Name: Onpu means "musical note", and she's an idol with an Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: She displays glazed-over eyes while possessed by a demon in one episode of Motto.
  • The Mistress: Onpu evokes this. She's the one who suggested butting in on Nobuo and Aiko's relationship in Nobuko's high school story, and also tried to steal Miss Seki's boyfriend away from her (granted, she did it to help Miss Seki, but still).
  • New Transfer Student: Onpu's first appearance in the show is episode 35, where she comes in Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko's class as a transfer student.
  • Nonstandard Character Design: He eyes are shaped differently from the other girls and she's the first character not to have pupils. Every character from Onpu on, for some reason, does not have pupils.
  • One of the Boys: In the first season, Onpu became even more endearing to the boys in the class when she shows them she knows a lot about trains, something that's common for boys and generally considered geeky. It turns out to be justified since her father is a train operator.
  • Only Sane Woman: The most calm and level-headed of the girls, though Hazuki is a close second.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When she loses her cool at anyone, it tends to be a big deal.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She was, for a while, the most capable Apprentice, and her theme color is purple. She remains skilled at magic in the later seasons.
  • Purple Is the New Black: Onpu first appears as a Dark Magical Girl, with "purple" being a child-friendly version of black.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Aiko's Red, made prominent in episode 34 of Sharp.
  • Refusal of the Call: In Ojamajo Doremi 16, Onpu is the only girl besides Pop to refuse becoming a witch apprentice because she's afraid she'll be tempted to use forbidden magic to cure her mother from complications of a stroke.
  • The Rival: She was initially one for Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko, prior to her character evolution.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Onpu's name was romanized as "Ompoo" on a design sketch in Sharp and as "Ompu" on a design sketch in Motto.
  • Spoiled Brat: In the first series, her money, fame, and fortune lets her think she can do whatever she wants. Averted in later series after her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Stepford Smiler: Type A.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Momoko's tomboy.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After her Heel–Face Turn, Onpu went from a spoiled, cold, enigmatic, and self-cententered Jerkass to a kind-hearted, sweet, and humble Nice Girl.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Loves cute, stereotypically feminine sweets like crepes and waffles to the point she's gotten into a light-hearted argument with Aiko about how she finds the image of takoyaki as particularly crude.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She is known to give very good and rarely questioned advice and, during Season 1, she was the prodigy apprentice who skipped several tests through sheer skill alone.

"Peruton petton palalila pon!"

Momoko, introduced in Motto, has lived in New York City for most of her life. She moved to Japan when her father's work transferred him there, but she had a lot of trouble adapting due to the language barrier. The Ojamajos helped a great deal to overcome that, and she admitted that she would most certainly have hated Japan had it not been for them, particularly Doremi.

She became an Apprentice when she discovered that the kind old woman, called Majo Monroe, who helped her when she first moved to America was in fact a Witch. She inadvertently cursed her and resolved to become a full-fledged Witch so as to one day turn her back. She succeeded, but Majo Monroe was already terminally ill and dying. Momoko received Majo Monroe's most prized possession before passing, but Momoko didn't want her to die. Momoko's attempt to bring back the deceased Majo Monroe shattered her Crystal, costing her her magic but sparing her from death had she succeeded. When she moved back to Japan, the Queen offered her the chance to once again become a Witch if she aided the Ojamajos with their own quest. She accepted, and she joined the group from there.

  • Age-Inappropriate Dress: The school's dress code is surprisingly lenient for allowing her to wear a short skirt baring her midriff, held up by suspenders.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Bigger than everyone else's at least, and highlighted in the Naisho Ending Theme.
  • Book Smart: Despite her ditziness, she's very good at school.
  • Brutal Honesty: Causes a bit of problems with Hazuki and Onpu at first. However, Majo Reed takes note of her honesty later, having her critique the sweets made for the Magic Frog Village.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Of the "ethnically one nationality but culturally another" variant. Both of her parents are Japanese, but she's lived in New York for most of her life and thus is culturally American. These leads to a several instances of Culture Clash when she first transfers to Doremi's class.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Whenever she gets excited about something. Also, she's the only one who finds Toyoken funny. Interestingly, as the series goes on, Momoko continues to get more and more Flanderized when it comes to being this.
  • Culture Clash: Momoko experiences a lot of these in the beginning of Motto.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance:
    • When she first transfers to the Ojamajos' school, Ms. Seki asks her to take out her earring since earrings aren't allowed in many Japanese schools. Momoko has trouble dealing with this, both because wearing earrings to school isn't a big deal in America and because her earring is a Tragic Keepsake.
    • Early on in Motto, Momoko unintentionally offends Hazuki and Onpu when she openly criticizes their lack of experience in cooking. Aiko later explains to her that it's not in Japanese culture to be very blunt and confrontational.
  • Demonic Possession: Played for Drama. She was possessed by the Big Bad and used to bring Hana into the Cursed Forest so the Big Bad can kill her directly.
  • Ditzy Genius: Momoko is very good at school and easily one of the top students in her class, but her Culture Clash with Japan usually leads to her moments as The Ditz.
  • Dub Name Change: In most European dubs except for Spain, Momoko was renamed "Mindy." In the Korean dub, she was renamed "Na Momo."
  • Dude Magnet: Implied to be this. Aside from the fact that all members of the FLAT4 were hitting on her during their first encounter, the reason why Reika Tamaki initially felt threatened by her is because the boys in their class find Momoko very attractive. In Ojamajo Doremi 16, Doremi even mentions that Momoko is very popular with the boys, and they were disappointed when she was unable to come to the class reunion.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: Blonde and apparently popular with boys, though probably not as much as Onpu.
  • Flanderization: Momoko started out as a quiet but outspoken girl with occasional conflicts with the Japanese culture. As the series went on, these cultural conflicts are executed for humor, transforming her into a Funny Foreigner and Cloud Cuckoo Lander with a side of Ditzy Genius.
  • Funny Foreigner: Justified in the fact that Momoko grew up in American culture, this trope is sometimes brought into light during Momoko's Cloud Cuckoo Lander moments. Of note, there's one episode where she starts spewing archaic Japanese and pretending to be a samurai while Kotake and Doremi are LARPing Battle Rangers... or when she thinks being Ninjas will help prevent Hana from becoming a witch frog.
  • Genki Girl: Initially she was more shy and quiet, but over time she develops a perky personality, similar to Doremi's.
  • Good with Numbers: Momoko's surprisingly skilled at math, mostly because she handled accounting when working at Monroe's Magical Shop.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a young, pretty, and nice Genki Girl.
  • Iconic Sequel Character: She's not introduced until the third season.
  • Innocently Insensitive: A little bit early on due to the culture clash.
    • Her Brutal Honesty on the less experienced girls' chopping techniques led to Hazuki and Onpu leaving work early. Aiko, having gone through this herself, encourages her to be a bit more tactful in her critiquing in Japan.
    • She didn't mean any harm by asking Hazuki if she could have her flute. Unfortunately, Masaru (who had given it to Hazuki) took it very personally.
  • Image Song: "ARIGATO", "Nippon Daisuki!!", "Sekai wa Love and Peace", "Rainbow".
  • Large Ham: In the Japanese version, she has a strong voice and gives over-the-top reactions to a lot of things, including ghosts.
  • Leg Focus: Her legs are one of Momoko's noted charm points by the boys of class 5-1.
  • Leitmotif: "America Gaeri no Majominarai"
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: Gets trapped in one near the end of Motto when the former queen possesses her.
  • Mindcontrol Eyes: Like Onpu, she displays glazed-over eyes while possessed by the former witch queen.
  • New-Age Retro Hippie: She wears a hippie outfit whenever she sings "Sekai wa Love and Peace."
  • New Transfer Student: She returns to Japan and joins Ms. Seki's class at the beginning of Motto.
  • Nonstandard Character Design: Like Onpu, Momoko does not have pupils and her hair is less "bulby" and more "hairlike." Even Hazuki's hair (previously the most realistic) is usually shown more like a single, connected thing, but Momoko's hair looks more like it actually consists of individual strands.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: She is actually fully Japanese, but her blonde hair and green eyes are usually trademark for most American characters in anime, so this emphasizes how she's lived in New York for most of her life and thus is culturally American.
  • Ship Tease: A lot with most of the main cast. She's posed as Onpu's husband and Aiko's boyfriend before.
Momoko: Hey, you! I heard that you're picking on my dear girl. Don't you know she is my girl?
    • An episode of Motto also showed signs that he might have feelings for his classmate, Kotaro Okajima, and that at the same time he could reciprocate.
  • Sixth Ranger: She joins the group come Motto while there was five already. She ultimately replaces Pop in the group.
  • Supreme Chef: A baker in training and helps the other girls with baking pastries and sweets. As an adult, she becomes a professional patisserie.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Onpu's girly girl.
  • Tragic Keepsake: She wears a single earring in her left ear in honor of Majo Monroe, who gave it to her before she died. This initially causes conflict when she first arrives at Doremi's school; Ms. Seki asks her to take her earring out since piercings aren't allowed in Japanese schools, but Momoko refuses to remove it because it reminds her of Majo Monroe.
  • Translator Microbes: Uses these early on in Motto. They translate English to Japanese and vice-versa perfectly, but she only uses them because she cannot speak Japanese very well.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She picks up on Hazuki's fear of ghosts when she joins the class on the courage test. She is almost as afraid of them as Hazuki is.

Somewhat Younger Hana, in Motto.note

"Pororin pyuarin hanahana pi!"

Hana, introduced in Sharp, is a baby born from the Blue Rose in the Witch Queen's garden. As Doremi, Hazuki, Aiko, and Onpu were the first ones to see her, they had to take care of her and raise her. She starts off as The Load since she is incapable of truly acting for herself as a newborn and she tended to get sick at the drop of a hat. This became an Escort Mission when the Wizards got involved, who wanted to exploit her powerful magic to save their race from extinction.

Hana's powerful magic also attracted the ire of the Witch Queen from two reigns ago, who tried to kill her towards the end of Sharp and continued to impede her throughout Motto before trying to kill her again.

She becomes an Apprentice when, having grown bored of the Witch World, she ages herself up with her magic to go be with her "Mamas"; this act shatters her pendent and locks her out of becoming next in line to be the Queen. As an apprentice, she doesn't take keeping the secret as seriously as everyone else and uses magic to cause mischief every now and then. In any case, she proves herself to have a good heart in that she does things with the best of intentions.

  • Batman Gambit: At the end of the series, she threatens to reveal her magic to everyone in a last ditch effort to snap Doremi out of her Heroic BSoD.
  • Big Little Sister: Adoptive variation in Dokkan. Pop and Hana are rather close, which made Pop's decision to remain human just as heartbreaking on Pop's end as it was for Hana to realize this.
  • Blush Sticker: Almost always has these during Sharp and Motto. She retains them most of the time during Dokkaan. She has these so often that they're practically her trademark.
  • Born from Plants: She was born from a flower at the Blue Rose Garden.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Is usually this when she doesn't get her way.
  • Break the Cutie: She does NOT take it well when the other girls decide they do not want to become witches at the end of Dokkan!.
  • Character Catchphrase: When greeting people, she says "chi~su!" ("cheese" is her way of saying "hello"). This has been used by some of the others on occasion.
  • Child Prodigy: Was able to ace 1st-5th grade work in only a few weeks after her Plot-Relevant Age-Up.
  • The Cutie: She is usually seen as adorable by most people. This extends into the light novel series.
  • Does Not Like Spam: In her early years, Hana had an aversion to carrots. Her mothers remedied this by using carrot cake. The former queen later cast a curse that made her hate all vegetables, but it was broken later.
  • Dub Name Change: In the French dub, Hana was renamed "Flora", a sort of translation of her name, while in the Korean dub, she was renamed "Oh Hana."
  • Dude Magnet: Even all of the FLAT4 were hitting on her!
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: Hana is blonde and everyone finds her adorable.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Pulls this in one episode of Naisho with Pop.
  • Genki Girl: She is very hyperactive and spends most of her time being happy-go-lucky. She has been compared to other genki girls, including Pinkie Pie.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Ever since she was born, she has had her hair up in at least one pigtail. Doremi alters her hairstyle to having two of them to help her out in kindergarten when she was having trouble doing somersaults.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: She is a baby with incredible magical powers who, unlike the Ojamajos, is a full-blooded witch. Even among witches her power is immense, which makes sense because she was born from a rose that only blooms every once every hundred years in order to birth the next Witch Queen. Her introductory season is all about how the Ojamajos need to raise her properly- not only so she'll grow into a good queen, but because raising her poorly could have bad consequences.
  • The Glomp: She tackles Doremi to the ground in a hug in her first post age-up appearance.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Hana is innocent, affectionate, naive and everyone seems to love her. She has very light blonde hair.
  • Happily Adopted: With all the troubles that come from raising an infant for her first couple of years, the Ojamajos, Majo Rika and Lala all love her and care for her like family.
  • Iconic Sequel Character: She's not introduced until the second season.
  • Image Song: "Watashi wa Ojamajo Hana-chan!!", "Daisuki na Ehon to Mama no Uta", "Damon ne! Hana-chan!!", "Thank You Mommies".
  • The Ingenue: Her purity and innocence make her this.
  • Innocent Prodigy: She is young, naive, and has the emotional age of a toddler even after she ages herself up to a sixth-grader, but she's still able to skip tests in her witch apprenticeship and breeze through regular schoolwork in a matter of weeks.
  • I Choose to Stay: Out of all of the girls, Hana is the only one who chooses to embrace being a Witch. Justified since she is next in line to be The High Queen.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: Her childlike nature as opposed to the more serious other girls makes her this. She even represents her own toy line while Doremi is used to represent the rest of the girls.
  • Kiddie Kid: In the final season, she forces a Plot-Relevant Age-Up on herself in order to be with the girls but she acts more childish than they do. Justified, since even after she ages up, Hana retains the emotional age of a toddler.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: See that white witch apprentice? Remember that baby Doremi and the girls were supposed to take care of in the previous seasons? Yes, those two are the same person. Chances are you will run into this revelation as soon as you hear of the series. Toei doesn't help it either — before Dokkan debuted, they teased viewers with a silhouette of a sixth (seventh if you count Pop) member on the team, but now all of their recent promotional material from Ojamajo Doremi mentions 11-year-old Hana, not baby Hana.
  • Leitmotif: "Hana-chan no Mahou" and "Hana-chan wa Majo no Akachan", the latter of which is used more as her Leitmotif. The song "Lupinus no Komoriuta" ("Lupinus Lullaby") is also heavily associated with her.
  • The Load: When Hana was still a baby, she mostly contributed little to the group. This is subverted once during Sharp when she contributed magic to a Magical Stage involving Onpu, Aiko, and Pop that was beginning to fail.
  • Magical Girl Queenliness Test: She had to go through this in addition to the exams all other Witch Apprentices had to go through in order to regain her right as heir to the Witch World's throne.
  • The Medic: In the light novels, she starts studying to become a doctor to prevent the kinds of illnesses Non-chan fell victim to from happening to future witches.
  • Naïve Everygirl: She is still very young and wants everyone to be happy. Being the Kid-Appeal Character certainly helps her be this trope.
  • Parental Favoritism: An Inverted example. It's pretty clear her favorite Mama is Doremi.
  • Picky Eater: In Motto after the Big Bad cursed her to hate vegetables in an effort to stunt her growth as a Witch.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: She forces one on herself in Dokkan's first episode and ages herself up from a toddler to an eleven-year-old, due to growing bored with the Witch World and wanting to be with the other girls. Hilarity Ensues when the spell backfires...
  • Power Incontinence: Since Hana is a full-blooded witch, her powers are stronger than the rest of the witch apprentices. When she was a baby, she had difficulty controlling her powers, which was often activated by her emotions. In Dokkan she is asked to undergo witch apprentice training in order how to learn to control them.
  • Short Tank: She dresses like one in her 11-year-old self.
  • Sixth Ranger: She joins the group once Dokkan comes around. What cements her as this instead of replacing another character in the Five-Man Band is that her magic is much more powerful than theirs is and she almost never joins in Magical Stage where as Doremi, Hazuki, Aiko, Onpu, and Momoko are the ones who pull it off in Dokkan.
  • Special Snowflake Syndrome: Being a full-blooded witch, she has access to things that the other Ojamajos will never get. Most notably, she has her own unique uniform and Transformation Sequence, recharges her magic differently than the others, and she is set to become the next Queen of the Witch World in the future.
  • Third-Person Person: She frequently speaks in the third person, even going so far as to call herself "Hana-chan". This gets her mocked by Reika Tamaki when she first enters the class, as doing so is considered overly childish in Japan.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: During Ojamajo Doremi 16, Hana had begun showing signs of a rebellious streak. Eventually, she decided to take advantage of the Witch Queen's love for her and get Majo Rika punished for giving her a punishment that she mostly deserved. This particular action is subverted in the 3rd volume of Ojamajo Doremi 16, in the sense that it was a tactic for a purpose: Before all these, Hana got to know some clues about her twin sister living in the human world, but everyone else, including Majo Rika, kept information of her twin sister hidden from her. Since Hana knew that Majo Rika must have been lying but couldn't get more information from Majo Rika anyway, she made this plan in order to make Majo Ruka as her guardian so that she could get these clues much more easily — specifically, when Majo Ruka got drunk. Now, technically this still counts as a Downplayed Trope since Hana is still somewhat at fault by this pointnote , but then the cheesy writing of the light novels shows when it mostly forgot this deal and started to portray Hana as the usual hyperactive and naïve girl who acts with all her good intentions again, ultimately reverting this trope.
    • Downplayed even more in the drama CDs (in which, apparently the sole reason for Hana to pull off this act was due to the twin sister deal), though still, ultimately a few problems remain.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She shares Pop's love of pudding.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Her magic is powerful, but she hasn't had the time or training the Queen and Majo Tourbillon have had.
  • Walking Spoiler: Hana's appearance in Dokkan counts as this. One look at her, and you'll know she aged herself and is now a regular member on the team.
  • Younger than She Looks: In Dokkan, where she ages herself up to an eleven-year-old with her own magic; even when she appears older, she still has the emotional age of a toddler. Subverted on nights of the New Moon.
  • Verbal Tic: "Bu-bu-buu!" Like "mother", like "daughter".
