List of characters in Nutty for Wonka:

    open/close all folders

    Matilda Prescott
Matilda Prescott is the main protagonist of Nutty for Wonka by Jadyne Farrow. Matilda, like the other six candy kids, is 10-11 years old, but very creative and imaginative. She's shown to have an intelligent mind and a fairly quick tongue, as well as a somewhat short temper. Her most prized possession is a notebook in which she puts down all of her candy ideas. The notebook was a gift from her father when she was six.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • Ambiguous Disorder: In a flashback, it's mentioned that Matilda has a disorder. While it's not explicitly stated what disorder she has, a character mentions that she has intense fixations. On top of this, her often blunt nature, as well as her ability to quickly see past the simulation Wonka tries to put her under may indicate that Matilda may potentially be autistic. As the author has stated that she herself is autistic and tends to write autistic characters, this would not be surprising.
  • Innocent Prodigy: Matilda is clearly very creative, even managing to impress Willy Wonka with her notebook of candy ideas. Unfortunately, this backfires on her, as it's why Willy Wonka wants to keep her in his factory.
  • Jedi Mind Trick: Used by Matilda when the gang is trying to save Violet from exploding into blueberry flavoring. She not only makes sure the oompa loompa doesn't remember anything after, but adds in a post-hypnotic suggestion of acting like a chicken whenever someone says the word "chocolate."
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: Matilda and James seem to have an on-going banter war between the two of them, despite them being fairly close friends. Matilda's comebacks often involve calling him a dodo.

    Charlie Bucket
Charlie Bucket is a secondary protagonist of Nutty for Wonka by Jadyne Farrow. He is often shown to be soft-spoken and caring. Like Matilda, he is fairly imaginative and loyal to his friends.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • The Woobie: The Bucket home, as in canon, is described by Matilda as more like a shack as the family is very poor. Despite this, Charlie is still very kind and caring, even after offering to let Matilda wipe her face with his only scarf after she ends up vomiting out of dizziness.

    James Adams
James Adams is a secondary protagonist of Nutty for Wonka by Jadyne Farrow. James is often shown bantering or fighting with Matilda. He has a tendency to conceal things and knows how to push Matilda's buttons, but also knows when to back off, to an extent.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • Cassandra Truth:
    • In chapter 3, after James and Charlie are saved from a school bully gang, Matilda tells them she's not going to help them again. James asks what if it's a situation they can't get out of, such as being turned into squirrels. Throughout the beginning of the story, he keeps bringing this up.
    • In spite of Matilda's insistence that it won't happen, James, after going to look for another fellow Wonkarer, Dani, is captured and turned into a squirrel by Wonka.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: James and Matilda both seem to have a banter war going on between the two of them, in spite of them being friends.

    Billie Smith
Billie Smith is one of the seven candy kids in Nutty for Wonka by Jadyne Farrow. Along with Alfie, she is one of the first kids to go missing and later is found to have been turned into a squirrel.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • The Ditz: Contrasts with Matilda, who has genius in some sense. James, in chapter 5, describes how "There isn't a moment where she isn't either batting her eyes and sucking on a lollipop, putting on makeup, or saying something stupid." However there are times when this is subverted, such as when she is the first one to spot the squirrel transformation antidote.

    Dani Williams
Dani Williams is one of the seven candy kids in Nutty for Wonka by Jadyne Farrow. Like Sophie, Dani is said to be a good student. She is the third of the five candy kids to go missing and be last seen by Wonka's factory.

Character Tropes Displayed:

    Sophie Springer
Sophie Springer is one of the seven candy kids in Nutty for Wonka by Jadyne Farrow. Sophie is Dani Williams' best friend. Like Charlie, she is quiet and soft-spoken and, like Alfie, is a fairly good student and usually plays by the rules, but like Matilda, will speak up if her buttons are pushed. She, along with James, goes to the Wonka factory to investigate the disappearance of her best friend Dani, who James claims is playing hooky. When Matilda finds her, she is mid-transformation and yelling for help.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • Out-of-Character Moment:
    • In chapter 17, when Matilda is about to beat up James because her mother wasn't there for them to have to sneak past to, so he didn't let her out of the bag she was in, Sophie becomes loud and somewhat of a leader, commenting in the narration on how she even shocked herself, and tells them that fighting will not get them anywhere closer to finding Dani.
    • This also happens earlier in the story when she suggests on finding a book in the library in order to find out how much nutmeg they can use to make her cousin ill and shut down the birthday party her mother set up. Matilda even comments in the narration about how "Sophie, being the good girl of Mr. Turkentine's class, would be the last person I'd ever think to even make a suggestion that would help a plot like this."

    Alfie Nelson
Alfie Nelson is one of the seven candy kids in Nutty for Wonka by Jadyne Farrow. Described by Matilda as "one of Mr. Turkentine's best students," Alfie is very logical-minded. He is described as wearing glasses, as is typical of the Nerd archetype. Along with Billie, he is one of the first kids to go missing and later is found to have been turned into a squirrel.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • Nerd: Nearly to a T. He is incredibly logical and has stated that "magic doesn't exist," though Wonka's factory seems to prove otherwise. Even as a squirrel, when he was the one who snuck out of the factory to give the nut to Matilda., he is described as having "eyes that look like they were magnified by glasses."

    Willy Wonka
Willy Wonka is the primary antagonist of Nutty for Wonka by Jadyne Farrow. He is extremely eccentric, a master manipulator, and somewhat of a mad scientist, who admires the creativity and imaginations of children, perhaps to an obsessive and extreme extent.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • Psychic Link: To Matilda whilst she's in his factory, but is only seen for one chapter. However the intercom communication he uses with her group even whilst he's giving the factory tour could be an example of Telepathy.
  • The Minion Master: His oompa-loompas are his army that, on his order, will stop at nothing to keep Matilda from leaving the factory.

    Mrs. Prescott
Zinnia Prescott is the secondary antagonist/anti-hero. She is shown to be shallow and readily discourages Matilda's more academic interests in favor of things like makeup and soap operas.

    Mr. Prescott
Dorian Prescott is Matilda's father.

    Veruca Salt
A shallow and spoiled brat, Veruca Salt is Matilda's cousin who is older than Matilda by one day. She makes her first appearance via telephone as she boasts about her ticket-winning to Matilda, despite this having been in the paper that morning. In the story, Matilda says that Veruca has claimed to have a nutmeg allergy, which Matilda later decides to use to her advantage. it is unknown if she is allergic or not, as nutmeg is dangerous to just about anyone.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • Spoiled Brat: Veruca practically embodies this trope throughout a good portion of the story. According to her cousin Matilda, "She never does anything herself, except scream for what she wants. I bet even THAT requires someone to scream for her when she's too lazy."

    Other Ticket Winners
  • Augustus Gloop: A very overweight boy from Germany. He is the first of the other ticket winners, aside from Charlie and Veruca, to make an appearance in the story. The group finds that he's about to be poured into the chocolate boiler. This, like how the other children are found, is no accident.
  • Violet Beauregarde: A prideful and competitive gum chewer from down South. She is the second of the other three ticket winners to appear in the story. The group finds that she's slowly expanding until she is to burst into blueberry flavoring, even though Wonka claimed he was going to de-juice her.
  • Mike Teavee: A TV and video game-addicted child from the Midwest. He is the final of the three other ticket winners to make his appearance. His use of video game lingo suggests that his addictions have had an impact on him even outside of their worlds. The group finds that he's being stretched until he's to rip in half.

    Oompa Loompas
The Oompa-Loompas are Wonka's workers and minions. As in canon, they come from a country called Loompa Land. However Matilda mentions that their country is not on the map. According to Wonka, it's because some of the children in classes could be "Wangdoodles or Hornswagglers or Snozzwanglers or rotten Vermicious Knids in disguise. You see, they kidnap children and turn them into their workers and spies. If they were to know of the locations of my dear, little Oompa-Loompas, then I would be ruined and they would be doomed."

While some of the Oompa Loompas are background characters, a few of them have somewhat individual personalities, and a few of them even have names.

Oompa-Loompas in the Story:

  • Fire Sweet: Mentioned by Tangerine Sparkle, she's a tall oompa-loompa who is given the task of overseeing the oompa-loompas on their projects whilst he is working with Wonka.
  • Tangerine Sparkle: Head of human resources and project manager, he shows a lot of eagerness for his job. Described as having a small head and wide eyes, it's indicated by Wonka that he's a fairly big talker, as he asks Tangerine to just send him a status report later after going on about it.
  • Dizzy Flower: One of Wonka's right hand oompa-loompas, she's shown to be fairly skeptical of Wonka, questioning if Matilda is, in fact, "the Sweet One," even commenting on how she looks so ordinary.
  • Sunshine: An Oompa-Loompa who serves Matilda hot chocolate after she comes to in chapter 26.
  • Daisy Bloom: One of Wonka's right hand oompa-loompas, she's fairly sweet and emotional. She's mentioned to Matilda that the others tease her for being too soft, even being unable to discipline the squirrels during nut room training. She is also the only one of the Oompa Loompas shown to use Matilda's real name.
  • Nasal:
  • Squeaky:
  • Blazing Dusk: Briefly mentioned by Tangerine Sparkle as working on the three-course chewing gum in the Inventing Room.
  • Orange Flash: Briefly mentioned by Tangerine Sparkle as polishing the camera lens in the TV Room.
  • Glitter Sun: Briefly mentioned by Tangerine Sparkle as working with Golden Desert on fixing the bugs in the Nut Room Laboratory.
  • Golden Desert: Briefly mentioned by Tangerine Sparkle as working with Glitter Sun on fixing the bugs in the Nut Room Laboratory.

Character Tropes Displayed:

  • The Cutie: Daisy Bloom is idealistic and soft; not only is she unable to discipline the new squirrels in nut room training with electric shocks, but she was also unable to kill Dorian, even though she had been assigned to. She's also the only Oompa-Loompa shown to actually call Matilda by her first name as opposed to the Sweet One.

Character Tropes Displayed:

    Other Minor Characters

Children:

  • Sophie Ballard: She's shown to be hanging out with Katherine Albright.
  • Katherine Albright: She's shown to be hanging out with Sophie Ballard.
  • William Carmichael: A school bully with a Cockney dialect, inconsistent with the rest of the characters, who is shown bullying Charlie and James in the second chapter.
  • Taylor: A spoiled, selfish girl with light-brown eyes who is invited to Matilda's birthday party. After she calls Matilda's friends dirty street urchins who don't deserve cake, Matilda, out of anger, ends up using telekinesis to cover her in cake and "make her the dirty street urchin". Taylor ends up calling Matilda a mistake, and then a witch after Veruca has a severe reaction to some nutmeg Matilda fed her outside of the story.
  • The Party Brats: Unnamed spoiled girls who Matilda's mother invited to Matilda's birthday party. They are very materialistic, shallow, and insult Matilda's friends. According to Matilda, "Their starched ironed clothes and heavy makeup give off the impression they're all beauty pageant contestants" and that conversation with them only ends in failure, as they prefer to "rattle each others' ears off about how their daddy bought them this and their mummy called them that."

Adults:

  • Bill: He's the owner of the candy store where, as in canon, Charlie finds the last golden ticket.
  • Mr. Turkentine: Matilda's teacher who first brings up her interest in candy-making. And according to Wonka, has been sworn into secrecy to not teach about Loompa Land.
  • Librarian: A nasally librarian, she is reminiscent of Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove.
  • Uncle Nigel: Matilda's uncle, who as stated in the story, is virtually wrapped around Zinnia and Veruca's fingers.
  • Mr and Mrs. Bucket: Charlie's parents; they are shown to be kind and supportive of Charlie and his friends.
  • Grandmas Josephine and Georgina: Charlie's paternal and maternal grandmothers, respectively. Josephine is shown to have a favorite Wonka bar, the Nut-a-rific. The two of them also are very perceptive, and are able to figure out that Charlie feels a fondness for Matilda that is more than just friendship.
  • Grandpas Joe and George: Charlie's paternal and maternal grandfathers, respectively.

Other:

  • Captain Jack: A stereotypical pirate animatronic who attempts to capture Matilda.
