Melina "Midge" Amelia Mayhan, the protagonist

  • A Friend in Need: To almost any of her friends, she's willing to be there for her friends no matter what.
  • Adorkable: In her preteens and teens also, she later grows out of this once she reaches her early 20's, but still has her moments.
  • Alliterative Name
  • Author Appeal: She writes her very first book call Living in My Sister's Shadow, which becomes a huge success.

  • Big Sister Instinct: Towards her younger siblings and of course her younger cousin Eliza.
  • Big Sister Worship: She has a lot of admiration for Davina and always looks up to her as her role model.
  • Boyish Short Hair: While not actually a Tomboy, she sported a shorter hairstyle in the first season only. Then it grew a lot longer as the show went on.
    • In contrast in the TV movie My Sister And Me, her hair was shoulder length.
  • Character Development: In the early seasons, she was this young teenage girl who had low self-esteem and lacked any confidence in herself, longing to branch out of her sister's shadow and finding her place in the world. Came the later seasons, she became a lot more confident and ambitious.

  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Subverted with. Her and Davina do have a very good relationship and rarely fight, but her inferiority over her sister's academic achievements would ultimately bring out the worst in her.

  • Meaningful Name: Her birth name, Melina, technically means "bright yellow" in Greek. Her parents kind of expected their daughter to have beautiful blonde hair when she was born and that her name would represent her being a natural blonde.

  • Not So Different: From Davina. It was even pointed out that they both think alike in some ways.
    • She realizes that her and Garrett have something in common: They both live in their older siblings' shadows and would sometimes bond with each other over the fact that the two feel inferiority over their siblings' success and popularity.
  • Oblivious to Love: In the first two seasons, she clearly had no idea that Anson was in love with her.
  • Official Couple: With Anson in the final season.
  • Only Friend: For her cousin, Eliza. She implies that Midge is her only real friend because she doesn't have any real friends back at home in New York.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Midge is her nickname, which is what her family and friends all call her. It was implied that she took the nickname from an old Barbie doll named Midge.
  • Only Sane Woman: If it's going to a New Kids on the Block concert or meeting them in person, she doesn't act all crazy or hysterical like Farrah does.
    • Whenever Davina isn't around, she's the sanest one in the household when there's chaos going on.

  • Strong Family Resemblance: With her mom. Her mother implied that she looks exactly like her when she was her age.
  • Teens Are Short: Subverted. She started off as an inch shorter than Farrah, but nearly as the same height as Anson in the first seasons. As she grew older, she became an inch taller than Farrah and a bit shorter than Anson (who grew more taller than the girls)

  • Adorkable: To the extreme. She even earned the nickname "Adorka-babe" by her friends.

    • She has two for her parents: "Farebear" and "Farabelle".
    • Chauncey's nickname for her also was "Blue Eyes" in Season 1.

  • Berserk Button: Do not ever say her deceased old puppy's name Patches in front of her. She would ultimately burst into tears if he's ever mentioned.

  • Celebrity Crush: She has a major crush on Jordan Knight from the boy band New Kids on the Block as well as being the resident Fangirl of the group.
  • The Cheerleader: In Season 3, her and Midge try out for the cheer squad together. She makes the team, but Midge doesn't. She happily averts the typical cheerleader personality as staying true to herself.

Davina Penelope Mayhan-Van Buren, Midge's oldest sister

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: She was an A + student back in high school and a dean's list student in college, but wasn't outright mean.
  • The Ace: She was very athlectic in school. When she was in elementary school, she played on the girls' softball team, in middle school, on the swim team and in high school, she was on track & field, lacrosse, played basketball for a while and was on the cheer squad.
  • Action Girl: For a girl, she definitely knows how to kick some serious ass.
  • Bare Your Midriff: During the earlier seasons, her wardrobe choices consisted of provocative, skimpier outfits that bared a bit too much of her midriff, but in her defense, it was the style trend of the late '90s/early '00s that catched on to teenage girls and young women.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She ultimately showed shades of this by almost destroying Cynthia when she kept on bullying Midge at her party.
  • Celebrity Crush: Has a huge crush on Joey Lawrence and Kirk Cameron.
  • Cool Big Sister: To her younger siblings, but mainly to Midge.
  • Cool Car: She drives a shiny, red sports car that's very expensive, compared to Midge's yellow one.
