Characters / Warrior Cats: Dawn of the Clans
aka: Moth Flights Vision

Go To

"Cats came into the forest. These were not warrior cats. They lived in small groups, not yet Clans. There were no borders set down. And they fought constantly, fearful that prey might run out and that their overlapping territories were being threatened. It was a lawless, bloody time for the forest, and many cats died."
Secrets of the Clans

Dawn of the Clans adds a brand new cast of characters to the Warrior Cats series. This is the character sheet for characters from that arc, as well as Moth Flight's Vision, Thunderstar's Echo, Shadowstar's Life, and Riverstar's Home.

Beware of unmarked spoilers! All spoilers from The Sun Trail, Thunder Rising, The First Battle, The Blazing Star, A Forest Divided, and Path of Stars are unmarked, and there are spoilers for the other arcs.

Main Characters and Clan Founders

    Gray Wing

Gray Wing ("Graywing the Wise")

"None of us knows what the future holds. We can only trust our instincts."

The first Dawn of the Clans point of view character. Gray Wing is a young and confident member of the Tribe, who lives a happy, if hard, life with his brother Clear Sky and best friend Turtle Tail. When a group of cats from the Tribe leave to follow the Trail of the Rising Sun to a new home, Gray Wing stays behind, believing his destiny lies in the mountains. However, when his younger brother Jagged Peak runs away to join the Followers of the Sun Trail, Gray Wing is forced to leave the mountains so that he can find his brother and keep him safe on the long journey to a new home. Eventually, Gray Wing and Jagged Peak rejoin the Followers of the Sun Trail and reach the forest.

Unfortunately, Gray Wing watches Clear Sky fall into madness from grief over the deaths of his mate Bright Stream, his second mate Storm, and two of Storm's three kits. When Clear Sky refuses to consider Storm's surviving kit Thunder his son, Gray Wing takes him in and becomes a substitute father to the young tom. Soon, Gray Wing's hope for a quiet life is shattered when Clear Sky's lust for power leads to an all out war, and Gray Wing himself is forced to become leader of the cats on the moor. Although terrified of what the future will bring, Gray Wing fights to save his brother from himself when everyone else has given up hope on him.

Gray Wing will go on to become the legendary WindClan tactician Graywing the Wise, who was renowned for his strategies that focused on the position of the wind.

  • A Good Way to Die: He passes peacefully in his nest, surrounded by (almost all—Sparrow Fur and Owl Eyes weren't able to make it in time) his family and friends, with the knowledge that broken relationships are on the mend and that the Clans he just named are going to prosper.
  • Accidental Murder: Near the end of The Sun Trail, when he is fighting Fox, a member of Clear Sky's group, he slits his throat without meaning to.
  • All-Loving Hero: He tries to befriend every rogue he meets. A special note must be made for Fern: when Gray Wing meets her, he knows she's working for Slash and spying on the Clans, but is willing to look past that and give her food, out of pure compassion for a weak, hungry cat.
  • Always Second Best: To his brother Clear Sky. He's the Tribe's second best hunter after Clear Sky, second place in their little brother Jagged Peak's Big Brother Worship, and second place romantically to Clear Sky's mate Bright Stream and second mate Storm. It stems from Gray Wing being a deconstruction of series protagonist Firestar.
  • And This Is for...: He says "That's for Thunder" in The Blazing Star when he prevents Star Flower (the cat who led Thunder on) from getting back into the fight, kicking her away.
  • Badass in Distress: Near the end of The First Battle, despite his badassery, he is trapped along with Tall Shadow and Jackdaw's Cry by Clear Sky, and Thunder has to get a rescue party to save him.
  • Best Friend: It's never stated outright, but his closeness with Tall Shadow seems to indicate this between them.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • Towards Storm. Gentle Gray Wing is the Betty and arrogant Clear Sky is the Veronica; Storm prefers Clear Sky.
    • Also, the sharp-tongued Storm is his Veronica, while his supportive childhood friend Turtle Tail is his Betty.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up at just the right moment to save Jagged Peak from an eagle.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: A variation. We have ginger Thunder, dark gray Gray Wing and pale gray Clear Sky.
  • Breakout Character: Massively. He was originally mentioned as a renowned strategist of WindClan, impressive to be sure, but not particularly someone you'd expect to be a protagonist in an arc about the Clans' foundings. Word of God is that he just "evolved naturally" into the role and that none of the Erins expected him to be as important as he was when they started writing. His planned death scenes kept getting pushed back, at first due to plot, but by the time he was supposed to die in The First Battle, the editing team was too fond of him to go through with it. While he still dies at the end of the arc, it's after becoming one of the most beloved characters in the whole franchise.
  • Cain and Abel: At the end of The Sun Trail, he and his brother Clear Sky have become bitter enemies.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: After he refuses to follow the Sun Trail, Jagged Peak runs away and he has to leave to find him.
  • The Cameo:
    • He appears in Blackfoot's Reckoning to give Blackfoot one of his nine lives.
    • He also appears in A Light in the Mist when the Clans have reunited with StarClan.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He loves Storm, but it takes him a while to realize it and he can't put it into words. She gets together with his brother before he can say anything to her about it.
  • Cartwright Curse: Gray Wing's first three loves, Bright Stream, Storm, and Turtle Tail, all die. Slate beats the curse, but then Gray Wing himself dies shortly after, so he doesn't get much chance to enjoy it.
  • Cat Up a Tree: In The Sun Trail, he tries to chase a squirrel along a branch, nearly falls, and then realizes that he's not sure if he can get down. Jagged Peak has to teach him how.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Remember those mountain hunting skills he taught Jagged Peak? They appeared years earlier in Battles of the Clans as WindClan fighting strategies that he had come up with. It looks like we know where he got them from.
  • Claustrophobia: He loves open spaces, feeling too closed-in even in a forest. The one time he crawls into a rabbit burrow, it's only because he wants to prove that he's not a coward, and he starts panicking while underground.
  • Crash-Into Hello: He first met Wind and Gorse when they ran into each other on the moor.
  • Decoy Protagonist: At first, it seems like The First Battle will focus on him like The Sun Trail and Thunder Rising. However, he's only the Deuteragonist, and Thunder is the actual protagonist.
  • Deer in the Headlights: In The Sun Trail, when the group is attacked by three dogs, he freezes and Turtle Tail crashes into him.
  • Delicate and Sickly: He develops a serious case of asthma due to smoke inhalation during the fire of Thunder Rising. His breathing problems consistently plague him for the rest of the series, slowly turn him into more of a Non-Action Guy who contributes strategy and wisdom instead, and eventually kill him.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: Storm chose his brother Clear Sky over him. He's also suggested to have had feelings for Bright Stream, who also chose Clear Sky over him.
  • Disappeared Dad:
    • His father never appears, is never named or even mentioned in passing, and it's never even acknowledged that Gray Wing, Clear Sky, Fluttering Bird, and Jagged peak had a father at all.
    • Becomes one himself at the end of Path of Stars when he dies shortly after his kits are born.
  • The Ditherer: He has quite a lot of trouble making decisions. He repeatedly changes his mind over whether to follow the Sun Trail, and has a hard time deciding to ask his crush Storm to come and live in the hollow. This comes back to bite him when Storm gets together with his brother Clear Sky, and later dies.
  • Epiphany Therapy: Twice in The Sun Trail.
    • He manages to stop blaming himself for Bright Stream's death when he realizes that she wouldn't want him and Clear Sky to spend the rest of their lives unhappy.
    • He moves on past Storm's death when he realizes that it's different from Bright Stream's death because this time it had meaning: Storm managed to save her kit Thunder.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: He has one when he realizes that Jagged Peak has run away to find the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Everyone Can See It: Just about everyone's reaction when they find out he and Turtle Tail have become mates is "about time!"
  • Family Theme Naming: When he finally has kits of his own with Slate, they name them all with colors in their names. White Tail, Silver Stripe and Black Ear.
  • Good Parents: He's listed as the #1 best father a cat could have for a reason. Thunder is his nephew, not his son; his mate Turtle Tail's kits are not biologically his. Does Gray Wing care? No. He showers them all with love, raises them with kindness, supports them in their struggles, and guides them even when they're grown up. When his biological kits are born, he's surprised that he feels...exactly the same type of love towards them that he does his adopted kits.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: When he's leaving to find Jagged Peak, the Tribe cats give him a bird to eat. He tells them to eat it themselves, because none of them have eaten yet. However, he is convinced to eat it anyway.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's implied that he has a crush on Bright Stream, his brother's mate. Later on, he's in love with Clear Sky's second mate Storm, but he tries to deny his envy so that his brother can be happy.
  • Happily Married: In Thunder Rising, he finally comes to love Turtle Tail and gets together with her. However, this happy relationship ends when Turtle Tail dies in The First Battle.
  • The Hero Dies: At the end of Path of Stars, he passes away from his illness, surrounded by his friends and family.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: A non-verbal example; he's completely shocked when Slate tells him how much respect Wind Runner has for him.
  • Hiding the Handicap: He gets a serious lung condition after going through the fire in Thunder Rising, but he hides it so that the other cats won't doubt his ability as a leader.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: After he gives Jagged Peak a lecture on not running off without looking where he's going, he does it himself. He then notes that he's being a hypocrite, and resolves to try to avoid being one.
  • I Have No Son!: A variant. Gray Wing declares that his and Clear Sky's brotherhood is over when Clear Sky rejects his son Thunder. He eventually reconciles with Clear Sky, though.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: In Path of Stars, his asthma develops into this, eventually killing him.
  • Innocently Insensitive:
    • In The Sun Trail, he talks a lot about Storm, his hopes for a relationship with her, or him looking for her, in front of Turtle Tail, who he has no idea is in love with him. She steadily grows more upset and frustrated by this until she eventually decides to go to Twolegplace.
    • In The First Battle, when Wind Runner loses Emberkit, he tries to comfort her by saying that Emberkit is in a better place. This ends up hurting her even more, and she angrily retorts that there's no better place for a kit than at his mother's belly.
  • In-Series Nickname: Generations after his death, the Clans remember him by the name "Graywing the Wise".
  • Ironic Echo: When Half Moon is worrying about sending so many cats away to follow the Sun Trail, he tells her that, "None of us knows what the future holds. We can only trust our instincts." This is a combination of two things that she had said earlier.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • In The Sun Trail, he blames himself when Bright Stream is carried off by an eagle and dies. He also thinks that Clear Sky blames him for her death. He eventually manages to move on, while Clear Sky never stops blaming himself.
    • It's shown that he still does it in The First Battle, when he worries that it's his fault Clear Sky turned into an enemy and Jagged Peak was crippled.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Interestingly it's not the cat he loves he does it for, but the cat she wants to be with. Gray Wing loves Storm, but she gets together with his brother, Clear Sky. Gray Wing tries to be happy for them, because he knows that Bright Stream's death hurt Clear Sky dearly, and he believes that being with Storm can help him.
  • The Leader: Takes up the mantle of leadership while Tall Shadow grieves for Moon Shadow after he dies. However, as Gray Wing's health takes a turn for the worse, Tall Shadow co-leads with him and eventually becomes it's sole leader as Gray Wing becomes unable to keep up, though he still serves as her closest advisor and the closest thing she has to a deputy.
  • Leader Wannabe: Inverted in Thunder Rising. Jackdaw's Cry, Shattered Ice, and several other cats want to install Gray Wing as leader, but he doesn't want to lead and just wants to be an ordinary cat. However, he eventually decides to be leader.
  • Love Triangle: He loves Storm, who loves Clear Sky. Also, Turtle Tail loves him but he doesn't notice at first.
  • The Magnificent: Remembered as "Graywing the Wise" by later generations.
  • Never Found the Body: From the point of view of the Tribe. They have no idea if he's alive or dead, due to the collapsing ice bridge.
  • Nice Guy: He's compassionate, warm, congenial, and just wants to see all the cats of the forest living together peacefully.
  • Non-Action Guy: In the latter half of the arc, his breathing problems force him to stop partaking in battles and hunting patrols. When he does end up in a fight in Path of Stars, he's so hampered by his coughs that he almost dies.
  • Oblivious to Love: His ignorance of Turtle Tail's crush on him leads to her leaving to live with Bumble.
  • Panicky Expectant Father:
    • In Thunder Rising, he inexplicably feels the urge to be near Turtle Tail at her kitting, despite the protests of the others - even though they're not his kits, and even though he doesn't realize his feelings for her yet.
    • Happens again when Slate is giving birth in Path of Stars.
  • Papa Wolf: The one thing guaranteed to turn this kind, even-tempered cat into a snarling menace? Any of his kits being put in danger. Even his brothers aren't safe from his anger.
  • Parental Substitute: He becomes this to his little brother Jagged Peak, to his nephew Thunder, and later to Turtle Tail's three kits.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Tall Shadow.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Clear Sky. He's humble to the point of self-deprecation and doesn't like change, while Clear Sky is an arrogant visionary. Even their pelt colors reflect this-Clear Sky is pale gray, Gray Wing dark gray.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Subverted, then averted. He acts as a mentor and father figure to Thunder, his nephew. The reason behind this is because Clear Sky Thunder's father was slowly turning into a cruel Anti-Villain. When Gray Wing allows Thunder to visit him, Clear Sky claims custody of his son, who was young and naive, and decides to mentor him. Gray Wing is powerless against this, and fears that Thunder would be influenced and turn cruel. Averted when Thunder deserts and disowns Clear Sky, seeing the error of his ways. Clear Sky eventually regains his senses, and the three (sort of) make up.
  • Refusal of the Call: He decides not to follow the Sun Trail. However, fate has other plans and he eventually has to leave his home to follow Jagged Peak.
  • Retcon: In Battles of the Clans, he is referred to as one of WindClan's early leaders. However, he actually lead proto-WindClan before the Great Battle.
  • Rescue Romance:
    • He thinks that he's in one with Storm after they both save each other. However, she has fallen for his brother Clear Sky.
    • Later happens with him and Slate, as at one point he saves her from a fox.
  • Serial Romeo: Taken so far it's almost ridiculous. First, he has a crush on Bright Stream. Then, he meets Storm and falls in love with her. After that, he realizes that Turtle Tail loves him, reciprocates, and becomes her mate. But after Turtle Tail dies, he meets Slate, who becomes his new mate. Yes, Gray Wing actually falls in love with more cats than his brother, a Serial Romeo himself, does.
  • Sibling Team:
    • Hunts and fights alongside his brother, Clear Sky. That is, until they declare their brotherhood over at the end of The Sun Trail. By the time they do make up, Gray Wing has become a Non-Action Guy.
    • Early on in The Sun Trail, Gray Wing and Jagged Peak have to work together as a team to travel through the mountains and meet up with the other Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • So Happy Together: He and Slate become mates and have a litter of kits, but a moon later he's dead of his asthma. They were both just happy to have what time together they could.
  • The Strategist:
    • During the battle with the foxes, he commands the Followers of the Sun Trail and uses strategy to defeat the enemy.
    • He also comes up with the strategies to lure One-Eye into a trap and to rescue Star Flower from Slash's group.
    • Suffice to say, he was so good at this that he became known as Graywing the Wise, a renowned strategist who created much of WindClan's battle strategy.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Near the end of The Sun Trail he kills Fox, The Dragon to Clear Sky. To say he felt bad about it would be a huge understatement.
  • Team Dad: Turtle Tail basically describes him as this, saying that he's been like a father to many, offering comfort and guidance and love.
  • Trauma Conga Line: His spans the entire arc. His little sister starves to death, he's forced out of his home when his little brother runs away, his brother's pregnant mate (who he may have had feelings for himself) is killed saving him from an eagle, which he blames himself for. Then the cat he loves decides to be with his brother, while the cat who loves him is driven to live in twolegplace because she can't deal with him not returning her feelings, leaving him sad and confused because he doesn't know why she left. Then his little brother breaks his leg and is exiled by his other brother, who is slowly going mad over the grief of losing his first mate. Oh, Gray Wing is haunted by his accidental murder of a cat. Then he develops a serious, eventually fatal, case of asthma; his adopted kits get kidnapped by their abusive father and his mate Turtle Tail is killed while trying to rescue them; he participates in a horrific battle where many of his childhood friends die; he wrestles with feeling useless as his illness worsens and forces him to the sidelines; his mother dies; one of his new kits with Slate get kidnapped as well; and then he dies. And all of this occurs in no more than a year and a half. Fortunately his son is rescued and he's able to have a peaceful reunion with his family before passing, but sheesh.
  • Victorious Childhood Friend: With Turtle Tail, who has loved him since kithood.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Calls Clear Sky out sharply for refusing to take in Thunder, as well as the things he's done in the name of "the community".
  • White Sheep: A downplayed version, as his brothers and mother are good cats at heart, but also arrogant, spirited, and can be quite cruel. Even his dead little sister, Fluttering Bird, shows a lot of haughtiness when scolding Clear Sky. And then there's Gray Wing, who is patient, warmly paternal, always wants to believe the best in people, and one of the nicest guys in the series.

    Thunder

Thunder/Thunderstar

"Can't we agree to look after what we have? Can't we forget about expanding our territory?"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b53b1aef32b9bd0f746e012dbd3f63f1.jpg

The only surviving son of Clear Sky and Storm. After the death of his mother, Turtle Tail gave him his name and Gray Wing took him to live with his father. However, seeing only his failure to save Storm in Thunder, Clear Sky exiled his son. Gray Wing then brought him to the moor, where he declared that he would be Thunder's father in Clear Sky's stead.

In Thunder Rising, he becomes a point of view character. His skills are naturally suited towards living in the forest, but he struggles to please Gray Wing, while secretly dreaming about his father, Clear Sky. Eventually, Clear Sky asks him to come live in the forest. He accepts, but once he gets there he sees firsthand the cruelty of his father, and ends up leaving to return to Gray Wing.

Thunder will go on to found his own Clan, ThunderClan. He will also be its first leader.

  • Ascended Extra: He's a minor (but important) character in The Sun Trail. In Thunder Rising, he's a main character, although not on par with Gray Wing. For The First Battle, he's the protagonist.
  • The Atoner: At the end of Thunder Rising, he realizes that he's betrayed the moor group and vows to do whatever it takes to make things up to them.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • He briefly ends up playing the responsible, kind Betty to Clear Sky's Reformed, but Not Tamed Veronica, with Star Flower the Archie. She picks Clear Sky.
    • Also, of his two love interests, demure Violet Dawn is the Betty to boldly flirtatious Star Flower's Veronica.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: A variation. We have ginger Thunder, dark gray Gray Wing and pale gray Clear Sky.
  • Brains and Brawn: The brawn to Lightning Tail's brains. Not that Thunder isn't smart, but he usually tends to handle heavy lifting, such as fighting opponents like a fox and Turtle Tail's former mate Tom in The First Battle, while Lightning Tail is more of a planner.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: At the end of Thunder Rising, he gives Clear Sky a well deserved smack down, declares that Gray Wing is his true father, and leaves the moor group with Frost.
  • The Cameo: He appears in Pinestar's Choice to give Pinestar a life.
  • Child of Two Worlds: Thunder is the son of Clear Sky, the leader of the group of cats living in the forest, but when Clear Sky refuses to raise him, Thunder's uncle Gray Wing takes him in and raises him in the moor group. As Thunder grows he feels loyalty to the group he was raised in and views Gray Wing as a father, but also wants to earn Clear Sky's approval and feels more at home in the forest itself than on the moor, so he tries living in each group. Ultimately his relationship with Clear Sky remains rocky and he forms his own group in another part of the forest.
  • Chocolate Baby: His amber eyes can at least be excused as coming from Clear Sky's side of the family, as Gray Wing has them, but that doesn't explain how a ginger cat is born to two gray ones.
  • Defector from Decadence: At the end of Thunder Rising, he rejects Clear Sky's cruel ways, leaving the forest group with Frost and heading back to the moor group.
  • Deuteragonist: In Thunder Rising, he's the second most important character after Gray Wing, and his struggles are a major part of the book.
  • The Exile: Clear Sky, his own father, exiles him from the forest.
  • Famed In-Story: He will go on to become a legendary Clan Founder.
  • Family Theme Naming: According to the Warriors website family tree, his littermates were named Lightning and Rumble, and he's Thunder, while their mother was Storm.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: In A Forest Divided, he starts the second Forest Group, which will one day become ThunderClan.
  • Happily Adopted: At the end of The Sun Trail, Gray Wing declares that from now on, he will be Thunder's father. As well, he has found a foster mother in Hawk Swoop.
  • Happily Married: In Path of Stars, he tells Violet Dawn he wants to get to know her before becoming mates, despite their mutual confession of love, but by Thunderstar's Echo they are officially this.
  • If I Do Not Return: In Path of Stars, he goes to help his adopted father against the rogues. He tells his best friend Lightning Tail that if he doesn't make it back, Lightning Tail needs to take over as leader of their group.
  • I Have No Son!: In The First Battle, he declares upon returning to the moor that he has no father, explaining that Clear Sky is a bully who sent Frost to die. They do eventually make up, but their relationship will always be strained.
  • Last Episode, New Character: He doesn't show up until the last chapter of The Sun Trail, but he's one of the most important characters in the book, and defines the ending. He's a major character for the rest of the books.
  • The Leader: Considered one of the six chosen leaders. In The Blazing Star, Gray Wing steps down as a leader due to grief over Turtle Tail's death and appoints Thunder in his place. Then, in A Forest Divided, Thunder starts his own group, which will eventually become ThunderClan.
  • Loser Son of Loser Dad: He is treated this way by Wind Runner after returning to the moor in The First Battle; she even says "He's only come back to cause trouble, just like his father."
  • Love at First Sight: Must run in the family—he's instantly smitten with Star Flower and Violet Dawn from the moment he meets them.
  • Meaningful Name: The kit of Storm, who was nearly killed during a storm of stone and dust.
  • Odd Name Out: He is the only Clan Founder to have a one word, forest style name instead of a two word, Tribe style name, and he doesn't adopt one either.
  • Parental Abandonment: His mother Storm is dead and his father Clear Sky essentially sent him into exile. Fortunately though, his uncle Gray Wing still cares for him.
  • Protectorate: Gray Wing vows to protect him after his father Clear Sky abandons him.
  • Red Is Heroic: He's the original ThunderClan hero, since he's the cat that's going to start it up. And of course, he has red fur.
  • Retcon: His name was originally said to be from the Thunderpath that runs between ThunderClan's and ShadowClan's territories. Later it was also said that he got the name from his hunting technique of catching prey startled and confused by thunderclaps. In The Sun Trail, he was named Thunder by Turtle Tail because he was born from Storm in the midst of a storm of dust and dirt.
  • Second Love: He's this to Violet Dawn, as her first mate, Rain, was killed on the Thunderpath.
  • Sibling Team: When he needs a partner, his most regular choice is his (adoptive) brother Lightning Tail, who even received his named because he couldn't be kept apart from Thunder. It takes a while for Lightning Tail to grow up and be helpful to Thunder, but their mission in The First Battle to save Turtle Tail's kits from Tom shows that they make effective partners.
  • Sole Survivor: He's the only one of his litter to survive the destruction of Storm's nest.
  • Sneaky Departure: In Thunder Rising, he sneaks away from the moor group's camp to explore the forest.
  • Start My Own: In A Forest Divided, due to disagreeing with Clear Sky over hunting patrols and being mad at him for falling in love with Star Flower, he leaves the Forest Group for a second time and starts his own group.
  • Taking the Bullet: In The Blazing Star, when Pebble Heart tries to keep Wind Runner from touching her ill kit, Wind Runner swipes at him. Thunder jumps in the way and takes the hit himself.
  • Tell Me About My Father: In Thunder Rising, he asks Clear Sky to tell him about his mother Storm.
  • Theme Naming: Intentionally used by Turtle Tail, who names him Thunder partially because he was born from Storm.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In Thunder Rising, he's in the middle of his awkward transitioning stage, so he's pretty clumsy and uncoordinated. By The First Battle, he's fully grown and is much more capable.
  • Walking Spoiler: His role in The Sun Trail as the only surviving kit of Clear Sky and Storm makes every single thing in the book that involves him a spoiler.
  • Was It All a Lie?: After he finds out that Star Flower betrayed him in The Blazing Star, he wonders this about their relationship. She assures him that it wasn't, but he can't believe it and sends her away.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: He wants to have the approval of Clear Sky, his father, who doesn't seem to like him very much.

    Clear Sky

Clear Sky/Skystar

"Don't you want more than just surviving?"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1e672f0b660834f2023a7cae7a5fff0c.jpg
"We've survived for now. But who knows what tomorrow brings? We have to be prepared-always."

Gray Wing's suave and confident brother. Clear Sky is a natural leader, and he quite literally jumps at the chance to find a new home. However, his mate Bright Stream dies, and he is left blaming himself. While the Followers of the Sun Trail settle in the moor, he takes a group of cats to live in the forest, and his desire to protect his new community leads to him becoming the enemy of Gray Wing and the moor cats. He is also the father of Thunder.

Clear Sky will go on to found his own Clan, SkyClan, and be its first leader. He also becomes a point of view character in The First Battle.

  • 0% Approval Rating:
    • In Thunder Rising, it's revealed that most of his group hates the way he runs things and only stay with him because they have nowhere else to go. In The Blazing Star, this is exploited by One Eye so that he can take over.
    • This continues in A Forest Divided when he mistakenly believes everyone must form into one group and everybody disagrees with him. Save for Thunder, the cats that joined Clear Sky's group only did so because they preferred the location rather than because they liked or agreed with Clear Sky.
  • Abusive Parents: To Thunder. His refusal to take him in during The Sun Trail is framed as being fuelled by Clear Sky's grief for Storm, but Gray Wing still calls him on it. However, during Thunder Rising he's emotionally manipulative towards Thunder, often employing various cruel means, including throwing him at a fox. He does eventually recognize how much of an asshole he's been and apologize in Path of the Stars, but their relationship is permanently strained at best.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: He falls to the ground and begs Slash to return Star Flower when negotiations with him go south in Path of Stars.
Clear Sky: No! I'll hunt for you! You can have all my prey. Just give me Star Flower!
  • Anti-Hero: After The First Battle. He's genuinely trying to ensure peace in the forest and atone for his crimes, but he's still short-tempered, sharp-tongued, and more ruthless than his brother and son.
  • Anti-Villain: Most of his villainous actions are done because he doesn't want to be reminded of his failure to protect the cats he cares about, and because he hasn't learned moderation. He also has some serious gray morality going for him. In The First Battle, this leads to him realizing how wrong his actions have been and deciding that he will dedicate the rest of his life to making amends.
  • Archnemesis Dad: He's this to Thunder until his Heel–Face Turn in The First Battle.
  • The Atoner: In The First Battle, the many pointless deaths during the Great Battle cause him to realize how wrong his actions have been, and he decides to dedicate the rest of his life to making amends.
  • The Bait: In The Blazing Star, he decides that he needs to be bait to lure One Eye out alone; he challenges him to a one-on-one fight.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • Towards Storm. Gentle Gray Wing is the Betty and arrogant Clear Sky is the Veronica; Storm prefers Clear Sky.
    • He briefly ends up in a Love Triangle with his son and Star Flower—Thunder is the responsible, kind Betty and Clear Sky is the Reformed, but Not Tamed Veronica. Star Flower picks Clear Sky.
  • Big Brother Bully: In Thunder Rising, as soon as he sees Jagged Peak, he drops the niceness and acts ugly towards him, taunting him and accusing him of being lazy and selfish. Gray Wing stands up for Jagged Peak, and Clear Sky begins to apologize only to be rejected by Jagged Peak. As of The Blazing Star, he's no longer this. In fact, he even apologizes to Jagged Peak for kicking him out of the forest.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Star Flower. They're equally clever, they have matching ruthless streaks, they're both atoning for past evils caused by said ruthlessness, and they're both truly dedicated when they commit themselves to someone or something.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: A variation. We have ginger Thunder, dark gray Gray Wing and pale gray Clear Sky.
  • Break the Haughty: Goes through this during the second half of the series. He realizes exactly how horrible he's been, that no one likes him, gets overthrown by One Eye, and has to go to his brothers and son for help. He realizes he's actually lonely and wants his family around, but that his own actions have driven them all away and that nothing will ever really fix that. His mother brutally disowns him when she learns what she did, and while she does forgive him, the moment of the disowning drives him practically to tears. And then Star Flower gets kidnapped, marking the third time he's lost a pregnant mate in some capacity. Oh, and his own camp believes she faked it. By the time Path of Stars starts, his arrogance is completely gone and he's openly begging—first for the other clan leaders to help him, then for Slash to return his mate.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: He leaves the Followers of the Sun Trail along with Jagged Peak, Falling Feather, Quick Water, and Moon Shadow to form his own group.
  • Broken Ace: He is confident, suave, and great at hunting and fighting. He also can't seem to succeed at anything he does, constantly loses the ones he loves (sometimes through no fault of his own, sometimes through his own actions), tends to shut himself off to become cold and ruthless, and, once he realizes how horrible he's been, is wracked with guilt.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Jagged Peak was obsessed with Clear Sky, and with following his lead. However, he turns against Clear Sky after being exiled.
    • He manages to do this with a location, of all things. He thought that the land beyond the Sun Trail would be perfect, but the realization that it was anything but contributed to his Face–Heel Turn.
    • Thunder used to want nothing more than to be respected by his father. However, at the end of Thunder Rising, Clear Sky finally crosses the line by sending Frost out to die, and Thunder turns against him.
  • The Bully: Thunder gradually realizes that Clear Sky is one during Thunder Rising.
  • Cain and Abel: By the end of The Sun Trail, he has become an enemy to his brother Gray Wing. They eventually reconcile.
  • The Cameo:
    • He makes an appearance in the prologue of Hawkwing's Journey to talk to Cloudstar and Brackenheart.
    • Skystar also makes an unnamed appearance in the prologue of Thunder and Shadow and later on in Shattered Sky to talk to Twigpaw.
    • And again in A Light in the Mist when the Clans have reunited with StarClan.
  • Cartwright Curse: Both his mates, Bright Stream and Storm, die. This breaks him severely, makes him believe that he can't protect anyone, and is a major contributor to his Face–Heel Turn. Star Flower manages to beat the curse, though—she comes out of her kidnapping and birth safe and sound.
  • The Chains of Commanding: During his Knight Templar reign. He feels that he cannot bend his rules even for his family or back down when they ask him to, because as leader he mustn't show bias—but neither will he change his methods, because as leader he's responsible for the well-being of all his cats and he believes they're the best way to ensure that. This ultimately destroys his relationship with Storm and scars his relationships with Thunder and Jagged Peak. In The Blazing Star, Clear Sky gives a borderline-hysterical laugh while expressing his relief at having the spirit-cats to guide him, and Gray Wing realizes that his brother had actually, quietly been crumbling under the weight of his responsibilities beforehand.
  • Character Tics: He likes to watch his camp while stretching out on his favorite tree branch.
  • Chick Magnet: Not only did he have three she-cats fall in love with him, he was the Veronica in a Love Triangle all three times.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: It's either Fluttering Bird's death or Bright Stream's. The former affected him so much that it fuels his determination to never let another cat starve, which is why he starts creating borders; the latter turned him bitter, which is why he becomes a major jerk for the first half of the series.
  • Deuteragonist: He's the second most important character in The Sun Trail, and a lot of the book is about how his development compares and contrasts with that of Gray Wing.
  • Disappeared Dad: Clear Sky's father is never present in the series, nor is he even mentioned. Surprisingly, this isn't part of his Freudian Excuse.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Set up as the main antagonist of Dawn of the Clans. Then in The First Battle, he realizes the error of his ways and resolves to be a better leader, causing him to drop the antagonist role.
  • Diving Save: In Path of Stars, he does this to rescue Black Ear from being hit by a monster on the Thunderpath.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: In The First Battle, he has this reaction to Falling Feather considering leaving his group - he insists that she should be grateful to him for finding their camp, setting their borders, and leading them. She rightfully points out that they all made the journey together and that his "The Needs of the Many" reasoning is just an excuse to be greedy and seize territory and power.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Even at his absolute worst, Clear Sky's unable to make himself kill his brother Gray Wing in The First Battle.
  • The Exile: In The Blazing Star, One Eye brings a group of rogues to take over the Forest Group and drives Clear Sky out of the forest and into exile. However, Clear Sky returns after One Eye is killed by Thunder.
  • The Extremist Was Right: Definitely not in his methods, which were needlessly tyranical and cruel, but in his ideas, yes. His invention of borders, in particular, is admitted to be a good one and ultimately becomes a major part of Clan culture.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Starts out as an ally of the Followers of the Sun Trail, but eventually becomes their enemy.
  • Failure Hero: Clear Sky is constantly failing to achieve his goals. He loses his sister, mate, second mate, and two of his kits. As well, his younger brother is horribly injured due to his fall from a tree (while using the hunting techniques Clear Sky taught him), and he has to watch as one of the cats he tried to save is murdered by his twin brother. His feelings of being worthless and unable to protect anyone eventually lead to his fall to the dark side.
  • Fallen Hero: He used to want to protect his Tribemates, but he starts doing terrible things in the name of "the community" and has nearly fallen completely at the end of The Sun Trail. He turns himself around at the end of The First Battle.
  • Foil: For his brother Gray Wing. Both leave to find a new home, but while Gray Wing left for selfless reasons and wanted to stay behind to help his family, Clear Sky was restless and just wanted to go on an adventure. And while Gray Wing is content with the older traditions and doesn't care much for change, Clear Sky will do anything to create an ideal world.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: In The Sun Trail, he starts up a group in the forest which will eventually become SkyClan.
  • Foreshadowing: Early in The Sun Trail, he suggests eating some prey instead of bringing it back to the starving Tribe, on the basis that the hunters should eat first so they can keep hunting, but relents when Gray Wing pushes him. This little exchange is a smaller example of his eventual belief system, the conflict that ensues from it, and the fact that his brother will pull him back from it.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was driven mad by his grief over Fluttering Bird's and Bright Stream's deaths, so he tried to create a perfect community where nothing like what happened to them could ever happen again. But despite his best efforts, he loses his second mate as well. One can almost see where he's coming from.
  • Freudian Slip: Accidentally refers to his group as a Tribe a few times at the beginning of The First Battle.
  • Generation Xerox: Tall Shadow replies that she can see where Clear Sky got his spirit after talking with his mother, Quiet Rain. Thunder also thinks, listening to Quiet Rain, that he now knows where Clear Sky got his arrogance and cruelty.
  • Good Parents: After realizing how much of an asshole he was to his son Thunder, he vows to be this towards his kits with Star Flower. He's loving and protective of all of them, including his adopted son Honey Pelt, and what little screentime they get as adults shows them to be happy and well-adjusted.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: He takes one look at the meager fresh-kill pile in Path of Stars and tells his camp that he'll eat tomorrow.
  • Grudging "Thank You": After Gray Wing and friends save his group in Thunder Rising, his gratitude is ground out of his teeth.
  • Happily Married: Bright Stream died shortly after they became mates, and his relationship with Storm was rocky even before her death, but he ultimately finds a loving marriage with Star Flower. In Shadowstar's Life, she's even expecting their second litter.
  • Has a Type: All three of his Love Interests have green eyes.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In The First Battle, the pointless deaths of the battle causes him to realize the error of his ways, and he stops being a villain.
  • Heel Realization: Throughout the whole arc, he keeps telling himself that what he is doing is the right thing, and that his harsh policies are the only way his group will survive. Then, during the Fourtrees showdown at the end of The First Battle, after killing his former friend Rainswept Flower and almost killing his brother Gray Wing, he finally realizes that he's gone too far, and sees how awful he's become. It's at this moment that he vows to change.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Clear Sky correctly judges someone's character exactly once—when he refuses to believe that Star Flower willingly went with Slash. The rest of the time?
    • He lets Tom walk through his territory with Turtle Tail's kidnapped kits because he believes Tom's claim that he's just bringing them back home.
    • Crossing over with paranoia, he believes that Gray Wing's planned meeting in The First Battle is really just his brother's excuse to ambush him.
    • He lets One Eye into the group, refuses to believe Mouse Ears when he talks about his poor history with the old rogue, and doesn't recognize that One Eye challenging Clear Sky's authority in front of Tall Shadow is a bad sign. By the time he realizes he does need to throw One Eye from the group, One Eye has badly attacked Sparrow Fur and killed Tom.
    • He wrestles with doubt over whether Red is trustworthy in Path of Stars, eventually putting him to a Secret Test of Character because he can't take the chance he's wrong.
  • Hypocrite: Rages at Gray Wing for killing Fox. However, he had ordered Fox to attack Gray Wing, and Gray Wing accidentally killed him in self-defense.
    • Clear Sky insists that he wants no cat to starve, but when he holds Jackdaw's Cry prisoner, Clear Sky deliberately starves him just because he can, even though he promised Thunder that he would feed Jackdaw's Cry. When confronted about this by Thunder, Clear Sky compeltely disregards it and Storm very strangely does not bring it up when Clear Sky insists that his actions were driven by a desire to prevent cats from starving.
  • I Have No Son!: His relationships with his brothers and son, Thunder, are various degrees of strained, and a disowning of said relationship has happened between him and all of them at some point or another. Sometimes it's Clear Sky doing it, sometimes it's the other guy.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: His eyes are described as "ice blue", which quite fits with how cold and cruel he is in the first half of the arc. In the latter half, the description is usually used either when he's being an Anti-Hero or when contrasted with love "melting" the ice.
  • It's All About Me: It's fairly clear that he would have left Bright Stream behind if she didn't come with him on the quest to follow the Sun Trail.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • He and Gray Wing both blame themselves for the death of Bright Stream. While Gray Wing manages to get over it, Clear Sky never does.
    • He also feels this about Storm's death in The Sun Trail. He thinks he should have stopped her from leaving.
    • How he feels about Sparrow Fur's injury in The Blazing Star.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sure, first he Took a Level in Jerkass, but later on, his encounters with Gray Wing show there's still a heart.
  • Jumped at the Call: He was really eager to follow the Sun Trail, and threatened to abandon Bright Stream if she didn't come.
  • Kick the Dog: Repeatedly done in Thunder Rising and The First Battle.
    • Giving Jagged Peak an unprovoked and undeserved "The Reason You Suck" Speech while his brother was still struggling with self-confidence issues.
    • Embarrassing Leaf to make Thunder look good.
    • Attacking Nightheart's brother after he was already beaten.
    • Deciding to leave Frost for dead even though he was still a useful member of the group.
    • Biggest of all, throwing Thunder, his own son, at a fox as a distraction.
    • Giving Falling Feather a demotion straight to the bottom of the group just for questioning him.
    • Breaking his word to Thunder by refusing to let Jackdaw's Cry, his hostage, have anything to eat.
  • Knight Templar: In the first three books. He genuinely believes that everything he does, no matter how cruel it may seem to others, is not only necessary but righteous because it's going to bring about his ideal society, free from death. The realization that he has brought death here hits him hard.
  • The Leader: He leads a group of former rogues and Tribe cats in the forest. Eventually, this group will be known as SkyClan.
  • Le Parkour: His hunting style involves launching himself off of trees so that he can catch prey.
  • Lonely at the Top: He secures a powerful camp and enforces his policies by sacrificing many of his friendships and familial ties. Prior to his Heel Realization he seemed to just bury any negative feelings brought by this choice, but by A Forest Divided he's lonely and mourning the way he burned all those bridges for horrible ends. Fortunately, he's able to find happiness with Star Flower and their kits, make complete peace with Gray Wing, and establish shakily positive relationships with most of the other cats.
  • Love at First Sight: When he first meets Storm, the two of them are starstruck and feel embarrassed due to their instant love. They get together a couple of days later.
  • Love Interest: He has three: Bright Stream, who died while carrying his kits; Storm, who died in a fire with 2 of their kits; and Star Flower, who successfully gives birth to his kits in Path of Stars.
  • Love Redeems:
    • He ultimately cannot make himself kill Gray Wing, and his realization of this is what makes him call a halt to the First Battle.
    • He was already well along his path to redemption at that point, but love and joy he feels for Star Flower and their newborn kits helps him realize how horrible he was to Thunder. His disposition is also a lot sunnier for the rest of Path of Stars than it was in the previous five books.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He keeps trying to manipulate Thunder into following and trusting only him, for example by claiming that sending him away was "a test", brushing off Thunder's opinion only to say he didn't mean to afterwards, and praising Thunder in front of other cats, making the other cats look bad. However, Thunder eventually gets sick of this and leaves the Forest Group.
  • Meet Cute: When Gray Wing takes Storm to meet him, both are instantly smitten and they have an incredibly awkward conversation. Later, they become mates.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • At the end of The First Battle, after killing Rainswept Flower and seeing the destruction of the Great Battle, he realizes how horrible he's been and promises to change.
    • In The Blazing Star, after realizing he let One Eye nearly kill Sparrow Fur.
  • Narcissist: He has many of the traits for this in The First Battle. He's prideful and boasts about how he's born to lead and everyone should be grateful to him for doing so, and that when they question him they just don't understand how his way is best. He loves to throw around his weight, bullying cats on his border, starving his captive just because he can, making anyone who questions him fear him, and becoming eager at the thought of making himself more powerful and expanding his territory. He's extremely self-conscious about how others view him, and spends part of the book wondering if cats are talking about him behind his back, and how confronting them about it might look.
  • Never My Fault: In Thunder Rising, when he kills Misty, it was her fault for not leaving.
  • Not Me This Time: In Moth Flight's Vision, Wind Runner accuses him of having SkyClan raid WindClan for prey, citing Willow Tail's eyewitness account, rabbit bones on the SkyClan side of the border, and his past history of ruthless expansion. She's completely stunned when it's later revealed that Willow Tail was trying to frame SkyClan to get revenge on Red Claw.
  • The Oathbreaker: In The First Battle, he takes Jackdaw's Cry as a hostage under the condition that he'll keep Jackdaw's Cry well fed and unharmed, and return him if he returns safely from the peace meeting at the Four Trees. However, once Jackdaw's Cry is alone in the camp, Clear Sky denies him food for the entirety of his stay.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: He fathers eight kits and outlives five of them—Bright Stream's litter die with her, two of his kits with Storm die with her, and his son Tiny Branch is killed by a fox in Moth Flight's Vision. In Shadowstar's Life Star Flower is pregnant with another litter, but nothing more is revealed about these kits.
  • Panicky Expectant Father: Becomes one when Star Flower is kitting. Considering a) his Cartwright Curse, b) the fact that she had been held hostage and starved not even an hour before, and c) the kits are coming very early, it's quite understandable.
  • The Paranoiac: Briefly becomes this in The First Battle when he jumps to the conclusion that his brother Gray Wing—who he has known literally since birth as a calm, peaceful, and reasonable cat—is setting up the meeting so he can ambush him.
  • Parents as People: Early on in Thunder Rising, Thunder sees that his father isn't perfect.
  • Parental Favoritism: Subverted. He's much more doting and affectionate towards his kits with Star Flower than he ever was with Thunder, which the latter is bitter over. This is due to Clear Sky realizing how badly he failed his firstborn son and vowing to be better this time around, not Thunder being The Unfavorite. When he and Thunder discuss this very matter, Clear Sky is quick to reassure him that Thunder was always the son he wanted, and he was at fault for not realizing it at the time.
  • Parental Neglect: Refuses to take in his son Thunder in The Sun Trail due to his grief for Storm. He gets worse from there, then better.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Gray Wing. He's an arrogant visionary while Gray Wing is humble to the point of self-deprecation and doesn't like change. Even their pelt colors reflect this—Clear Sky is pale gray, Gray Wing dark gray.
  • Protectorate: He has a deep sense of responsibility and protectiveness towards cats in his care.
    • In the first half of the arc, he's terrified by the thought of losing someone else to starvation the way he lost his little sister, so he resolves to make sure no cat of his starves. While some of his ideas are good, his actual execution of them is flat-out tyrannical and just makes everyone hate him.
    • He lost Bright Stream while she was pregnant because, in his eyes, he didn't protect her enough. So, when his second and third mates, Storm and Star Flower, each get pregnant, he ramps this up and becomes hugely overprotective. Storm gets fed up with being treated like a kit and leaves him; Star Flower manages to talk him into compromises or, when she can't, show him she's not made of flower petals.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives Jagged Peak a cruel and unprovoked one in Thunder Rising, calling him selfish and lazy. Gray Wing, however, is quick to defend their little brother, and Jagged Peak gives Clear Sky one for kicking him out of the forest.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: After his Heel Realization. He wants to make up for what he's done, but he still tends to be arrogant, sharp-tongued, and pushy about it.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: In the latter half of the arc, he genuinely tries to make up for his past actions, but almost nobody likes him or has forgiven him for what he's done. Of the cats he's hurt, only Gray Wing fully does—his relationships with Thunder and Jagged Peak, while improved, are still strained.
  • Sadist Teacher: His method of training in Thunder Rising and The First Battle.
    • In Thunder Rising, he insists that Thunder learn to jump from tree to tree despite the fact that the trees are burned and might not hold his weight (and Clear Sky had driven out his own brother Jagged Peak for being injured after falling out of a tree.) He insults him when he hesitates, and once Thunder finally does what he wants and a branch ends up breaking beneath him, Clear Sky calls him reckless.
    • In The First Battle, he has his cats train with claws unsheathed, and uses the opportunity to put fear into a cat who questioned him.
  • Second Love: Falls in Love at First Sight with Storm after Bright Stream dies...and then she dies too. Star Flower's his third love.
  • Serial Romeo: He has three mates over the course of the arc and fathers a total of eight kits between them.
  • Sibling Team: Hunts and fights alongside his brother Gray Wing. However, they declare their brotherhood over at the end of The Sun Trail. By the time they do make up, Gray Wing has become a Non-Action Guy.
  • Social Darwinist: After Jagged Peak breaks his leg, he kicks him out of the group because he believes that cats who "are too weak to contribute to the community" should be left to fend for themselves. He pulls the same thing on Frost in Thunder Rising. This prompts Thunder to leave Clear Sky's group of cats.
  • Sour Supporter: When Gray Wing wants to bring prey that Clear Sky was eating back to the Tribe instead, Clear Sky grumbles about it. However, he knows that it's the right thing to do.
  • Stepford Smiler: After losing Bright Stream, he reacts to everything with cold politeness that hides his grief. Eventually, the act starts slipping.
  • That Man Is Dead: At the end of The Sun Trail, he tells Gray Wing that the cat he was in the mountains doesn't exist anymore.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass:
    • After forming his own community, his inner turmoil takes its toll on him and he becomes self-centered and antagonistic. Gray Wing eventually declares their brotherhood over.
    • He inexplicably acts like pre-Heel–Face Turn Clear Sky in Moth Flight's Vision. There's an out-of-universe justification for it, as that book was written before his redemption arc was completed, even though it chronologically occurs after Dawn of the Clans. A possible in-universe explanation is that his grief for his recently-deceased brother and sick (then later dead) son makes him temporarily revert, as he's back to normal in Thunderstar's Echo and Shadowstar's Life.
  • Trauma Conga Line:
    • First his little sister dies. Then his pregnant mate is carried off by eagles and eaten. Then his little brother falls from a tree and breaks his leg. Then his other brother Gray Wing kills a cat who had joined up with him, and who he was responsible for. Then his new mate runs off from him. Then she dies, as do two of his kits. And he blames himself for all of it.
    • Picks up again from The Blazing Star on. He's kicked out of his own camp by One Eye while his cats do nothing to interfere, his mother disowns him and dies, his third mate is kidnapped while pregnant, his twin brother dies, and then in Moth Flight's Vision, his son dies. And this all occurs in the span of roughly a few moons.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: He's driven by his desire to create a utopian community where no one will ever starve again...by enforcing tyrannical Social Darwinist policies that stamp out anyone who doesn't "contribute" to said community. He later realizes just how wrong this mentality is, even sadly telling Quick Water that SkyClan would never be grateful to gain land by driving out ShadowClan in Shadowstar's Life.
  • Walking Spoiler: The fact that Clear Sky turns bad is spoilery enough, but he's also Thunder's father. In fact, he's so hard to discuss that this page had to adopt an "only the latest book" spoiler policy, or else his entire section would be nothing but a ridiculously long swathe of spoiler tags.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Calls out Gray Wing for killing Fox. However, he was being a hypocrite, as he started the fight that led to Fox's death.
  • Would Hurt a Child: It says a lot about who he is becoming in Thunder Rising, that when finding orphaned kits, his instinctive reaction is to suggest Mercy Killing them (his group didn't have a nursing queen, so he didn't think they could adopt them, but that doesn't preclude looking for someone else who can).

    Tall Shadow

Tall Shadow/Shadowstar

"You should always put your own family and friends first-every cat knows that!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ef196df691555c992c5cff18482b3682.jpg
"The Great Rock did not rise from the ground for me to sit on."

A calm, quick-witted, and determined she-cat. Although somewhat of a loner, she is a natural leader and firmly believes in The Power of Friendship. (No, seriously.) After the death of Shaded Moss, she takes over as leader of the Followers of the Sun Trail. However, in Thunder Rising, her rigid adherence to the ways of the Tribe starts causing problems for the Moor Group, and more than a few cats begin to doubt her leadership.

Tall Shadow will go on to found her own Clan, ShadowClan, and be its first leader.

  • Badass in Distress: Near the end of The First Battle, Tall Shadow is trapped by Clear Sky along with Gray Wing and Jackdaw's Cry. She can't escape despite her badassery, so Thunder has to get the others in the Moor Group to rescue her and her allies.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Gray Wing from potentially fighting Gorse and Wind.
  • The Cameo: She appears in the prologue of River of Fire, and shows up to give Blackfoot one of his nine lives in Blackfoot's Reckoning.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Mentions that being leader wasn't something she ever wanted.
  • Character Development: Goes from a quiet she-cat who doesn't interact with her group members much to someone who believes in the power of friendship.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She has a novella titled Shadowstar's Life which gives more detail on how she was the first of the founders to lose her ninth life.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When she does talk, it's often to make smart remarks. This one from The Sun Trail is a good example.
Moon Shadow: "Who died and made you leader?"
Tall Shadow: "Shaded Moss, actually. And it's not a position I ever asked for."
  • Expy: Her intelligence, appearance, and cunning make her seem a lot like Hollyleaf.
  • Family Theme Naming: Tall Shadow, her brother Moon Shadow, and her nephew Sun Shadow.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: In A Forest Divided, she starts a group in the pine forest, which will eventually become ShadowClan.
  • Generation Xerox: According to Quiet Rain, Tall Shadow has her father's temper.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers one when her brother Moon Shadow is inflicted with an injury in a fire that leads to his death. She decides to step down as leader of their group as a result and names Gray Wing as her replacement.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She lost one of her nine lives saving a kit from drowning.
  • It's All My Fault: She blames herself for Sun Shadow's death in Shadowstar's Life, thinking that she should have ordered him to save himself.
  • The Leader:
    • Takes over as leader of the Followers of the Sun Trail after Shaded Moss dies.
    • In A Forest Divided, she becomes leader of a group in the pine forest, which will eventually become ShadowClan.
  • Leave Him to Me!: In Shadowstar's Life, she tells Raven Pelt that Quick Water is hers to fight, since Quick Water had previously taken one of Shadowstar's nine lives and killed her nephew.
  • Look Both Ways: She lost one of her nine lives on the Thunderpath, and nearly loses her final one this way when pushed onto it.
  • Mutual Kill: With Quick Water.
  • The Paranoiac: She becomes this in Shadowstar's Life after seeing a cat with amber eyes watch as she and Sun Shadow are killed by dogs. After that, Shadowstar can't stop thinking about amber eyes and becomes wary of any who has them and even cats who don't. By the time the novella is coming to a close, she's come to the conclusion that Skystar and Thunderstar are working together to shelter Quick Water from her even though, earlier in that same chapter, she thought Skystar had no idea his son had taken in Quick Water.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Moon Shadow, who is annoying and boastful, while Tall Shadow is quiet and worth listening to. Gray Wing wonders how one litter can produce such different cats.
  • The Power of Friendship: At one point, she says that you can make miracles by putting the needs of your friends and family above your own.
  • Shipper on Deck: She's very happy to see Gray Wing and Turtle Tail get together.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: She's quiet, but intelligent and when she does speak it's always worth listening to what she has to say. Her brother Moon Shadow is reckless, brash, and obsessed with fighting.
  • Taking You with Me: In Shadowstar's Life, when she realizes that she's dying, she is determined that she won't leave a murderer in the Clans, so with the last of her strength she strikes a mortal blow on Quick Water.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In Thunder Rising, she grows more hostile due to the stress of leadership, rivalry with Clear Sky, and her unwillingness to adapt her ideas to the forest way of life. However, at the end of the book she reconciles with the rest of the moor group and becomes co-leader alongside Gray Wing.
  • The Quiet One: Early on, Gray Wing mentions that she doesn't seem to talk very much.
  • Unexpected Successor: The Followers of the Sun Trail weren't expecting her to become their new leader after Shaded Moss died.

    Wind Runner

Wind/Wind Runner/Windstar

"That's how it feels to be leader. You make the best decision you can. But you can't be sure how it will turn out."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ee96b08f6961ea847b148b1f975683f1.jpg
"Every cat must die. But I won't go without a fight. I am WindClan's leader and I must show I have courage. It will give my Clan courage."

A lithe and speedy she-cat who lives on the moor with her mate Gorse. Although initially she doesn't trust the Followers of the Sun Trail, she and Gorse warm up to them eventually, and become the first outsiders accepted into the Moor Group in The First Battle. She is also slim enough to fit into tunnels, and she uses this ability to chase prey beneath the earth. In The First Battle, she is pregnant with kits.

Wind will go on to found her own Clan, WindClan, and be its first leader.

  • Abusive Parents: She is on the emotionally abusive side, not caring how hurtful her words are to Moth Flight as she blames her daughter for everything. While some of the time it was understandable for her to be upset - Moth Flight had lost track of the kits she was babysitting, and later that very day nearly got herself killed - there was no call for some of the things she said, like that they probably made such a small catch because of Moth Flight tripping over her own paws, or saying that WindClan would be better off without her.
  • The Ace: In Moth Flight's Vision, Moth Flight thinks about how her mother is respected and so good at everything she does.
  • Battle Couple: Fights alongside her mate, Gorse.
  • Broken Pedestal: Originally had absolute faith in her caretaker, Branch, and thought that they might even have kits some day. After he disappeared, she deduced that he had abandoned her and lost all the trust she had once had for him.
  • Brutal Honesty: While everyone wonders on what to do with Bumble when she runs away, she flat-out tells her that she can't stay because she's not strong enough.
  • Crash-Into Hello: She and Gorse first meet Gray Wing when he crashes into them.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Is the star of the bonus scene of The First Battle.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She's cold and distant at first, but through meeting Gorse and the Followers of the Sun Trail, she slowly starts to be more caring and emotional.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: She has underground hunting skills, which become the prototype for tunneling.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: In The Blazing Star, she starts her own group in the moor. Eventually, this group will become WindClan.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: In Path of Stars, Clear Sky starts to panic and grieve when he thinks that his friends have all betrayed him and left his mate to die. It takes Wind Runner raking her claws across his ears and telling him to sit up and stop acting like a kit to make him realize that they actually have a plan to save her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's blunt, an ice queen, and a warmonger, but she really does care about those in need. This is shown best in her Bonus Scene, where she gives all her food to a sick queen and her kits, then risks her life to rescue one of those kits from a fire.
  • The Leader: In The Blazing Star, she becomes the leader of her own group of cats on the moor, who will eventually become WindClan.
  • Meaningful Name: She's called Wind Runner because she runs as fast as the wind.
  • Meaningful Rename:
    • In Thunder Rising, Lightning Tail suggests renaming Wind and Gorse to show their close bonds with the mountain cats. Wind gets Wind Runner as her name.
    • In Moth Flight's Vision, Wind Runner receives her lives from StarClan and gets the name Windstar.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: In Moth Flight's Vision, she gives one of these to Moth Flight when her daughter nearly gets herself and Gorse Fur killed. It ends with her saying that WindClan would be better off without Moth Flight.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In The Blazing Star, after Morning Whisker dies, she leaves the Moor Group, claiming that it has only ever brought her heartbreak.
  • So Proud of You: She says this to Moth Flight in Moth Flight's Vision when Moth Flight stands her ground against Gorse Fur, insisting that StarClan is guiding her paws to save Wind Runner.
  • Start My Own: In The Blazing Star, she leaves the Moor Group, then decides to start her own group with her family.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: At first she displays hostility towards Gray Wing, but they gradually become friends.
  • Unnamed Parent: Her deceased mother is mentioned, but never named.
  • Used to Be More Social: She was originally eager to be friends with other cats, but swore to rely only on herself after being betrayed by Branch. However, she went back to being social after meeting Gorse and Tansy, eventually joining the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In Thunder Rising, after Thunder doesn't step in to help her when she's attacked in the forest, she gives him a glare that perfectly displays her disappointment in him.

    River Ripple

River Ripple/Riverstar (Ripple)

"I don't like giving myself labels. I live by the river, and that's all any cat needs to know."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e21010d6ab048fe46e38802358f90782.jpg
"Sometimes we can't stop others from making mistakes. But we can help them when they do."

A cat who lives by the river, in his youth, he was named Ripple, and lived with the Cats of the Park in a natural park. However, when the park was demolished, he was separated from his mentor Arc and sent adrift on the river. After seeing how the water protected him, he added the "River" part to his name and was thankful to it ever since.

By the time the story begins, River Ripple is an elegant cat who goes where he pleases. He is good friends with Nightheart, a fellow swimming cat, and becomes an ally of Gray Wing and his friends. And of course, he's fabulous.

River Ripple will go on to found his own Clan, RiverClan, and be its first leader. He will also come up with the idea for the mentor-apprentice system.

  • Alliterative Name: River Ripple.
  • Best Friend: In Riverstar's Home, Night calls him hers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Thunder Rising, he saves Gray Wing and his allies when they are trapped by the forest fire.
  • Big Eater: He loves food, and will eat whatever he can get his paws on.
  • The Cameo: He appears in Leopardstar's Honor to give Leopardstar one of her nine lives.
  • Cats Hate Water: At first he hated water and was terrified of the river. However, it's inverted eventually, as he grows to love water and swimming, and considers himself a Cat of the River.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • He's not a point of view character in the main story of Thunder Rising, but he stars in the Bonus Scene, which reveals his origins.
    • He got a super edition in 2023, called Riverstar's Home.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: Sometime before Thunder Rising, he starts up the group known as the Cats of the River, which will eventually become RiverClan.
  • From Stray to Pet: Temporarily. He becomes a kittypet for the winter between The Sun Trail and Thunder Rising but eventually returns to the river.
  • The Leader: He leads the Cats of the River, who will become RiverClan.
  • "Near and Dear" Baby Naming: He has kits in Riverstar's Home, and two of them get this kind of name. One, Arc Shadow, is named after his former mentor Arc, another, Ripple Shine, is named after Ripple, the name he had while he was still living in the park.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: River Ripple never got to say goodbye to the cat he loved, Flutter, when she was captured by Twolegs.
  • Nice Guy: Saves the Moor Group from the fire and helps Thunder and Lightning Tail track down Tom simply because he knows they're good cats.
  • Meaningful Name: His original name, Ripple, came from the movement of the river water in the Park.
  • Meaningful Rename: He added the "River" part to his name as thanks to the river that protected him after he was separated from the Cats of the Park. He also later takes the name Riverstar after receiving nine lives.
  • Panicky Expectant Father: In Riverstar's Home, when he has kits, he's more worried about Finch's kitting than Finch herself.
  • A Pet into the Wild: After his Twolegs get a dog, he escapes them and goes back to the river.
  • Reluctant Warrior: In Riverstar's Home he is this initially, but after the groups have to deal with One Eye he accepts that sometimes violence is the only option.
  • Second Love: He's this to his mate and the mother of his kits, Finch Song, who had a mate who died and kits who became kittypets. She's also this to him, as he had a crush on Arc's sister Flutter before finding out she died after he was washed away from the park.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: With Finch in Riverstar's Home, once she is expecting his kits.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He doesn't do much in Thunder Rising, but without him the Moor Group wouldn't have been able to save the Forest Group from the fire.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: His daughter Ripple Shine is silver, like him.

    Moth Flight

Moth Flight

"We can't change the past. But we can change the future. Somehow, we must discover new herbs and new cures."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1faf2b43df61f32c56afa08e4eabb178.jpg

One of daughters Wind Runner and Gorse Fur, born during The First Battle. When her mother leaves the hollow, she takes Moth Flight with her. However, Moth Flight grows up to be an easily distracted cat obsessed with herbs, causing Wind Runner to disapprove of her. She's a minor character in Dawn of the Clans, but is the star of the followup Super Edition, Moth Flight's Vision, which expands the story of how she discovered the Moonstone and became the first medicine cat into a full length novel.

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: When Micah dies, she begs him not to leave her and reveals that she loves him.
  • The Apprentice: To either Reed Tail or Swift Minnow, who taught her and her brother Dust Muzzle to fight.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: She frequently gets distracted, to the point of ignoring her Clanmates when they try to bring her back to reality.
  • Be Yourself: In Moth Flight's Vision, she frets about not being as good a hunter as the other WindClan cats, but when she finds the Moonstone, Half Moon tells her that she should be herself because she has different qualities than her Clanmates and is destined for a different role.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She's an unnamed kit who does absolutely nothing in The First Battle. She's revealed to be Moth Flight in The Blazing Star, but still doesn't do much for the rest of the arc. However, she's the star of the followup Super Edition.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Received her own Super Edition titled "Moth Flight's Vision" which came out in 2015.
  • Deer in the Headlights: There's one moment in Moth Flight's Vision where she thinks a fox has found her, and she freezes. Fortunately it's just one of her Clanmates, but she doesn't want to think about what would have happened if he actually had been a fox.
  • Determined Doctor: In Moth Flight's Vision, Micah and Moth Flight defy Clear Sky to get the sap they need, and risk their own safety by climbing a tree to get it.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: In the prologue of Moth Flight's Vision, she dreams of events in Into the Wild, which happens long after Dawn of the Clans.
    • Moth Flight occasionally has dreams of scenes from the first arc (and one from Firestar's Quest), usually related to the nine lives leaders have.
  • Genius Ditz: While she spaces out a lot and is easily distracted, StarClan still chose her as the first medicine cat. She turns out to be an expert with herbs and healing.
  • Heroic BSoD: When Micah dies, she spends an entire day unmoving at his side without realizing how much time has passed.
  • I Was Having Such a Nice Dream: After Micah's death, she dreams of him, and just when he's about to tell her something important, some pain in her leg awakens her.
  • The Medic: She becomes the very first WindClan medicine cat during Moth Flight's Vision. In fact, she was the first medicine cat in Clan history and even founded the Moonstone, where medicine cats and Clan leaders would go for generations.
  • The Mentor: She taught Reed Tail some essential herb knowledge. She also mentored Acorn Fur after she became SkyClan's new medicine cat.
  • No Name Given: Her name isn't revealed in The First Battle. However, The Ultimate Guide reveals that she is Moth Flight.
  • Sneaky Departure: In Moth Flight's Vision, she decides to follow her moth, and leaves Spotted Fur asleep. She walks in a small stream to make sure there's no scent trail for him to follow.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: After Micah dies, Moth Flight is happy to learn about her pregnancy, because at least she has something left of Micah.
  • So Proud of You: In Moth Flight's Vision, she says this to her son Honey Pelt when he courageously accepts her decision to send him to SkyClan, and then to all of her kits in the epilogue.
  • Teen Pregnancy: This is implied as she's repeatedly mentioned as being young. Estimates show that she is around the age of a modern apprentice. Before it's revealed that she's pregnant, it's even mentioned by other characters that she's too young to know much about childbirth and kittens. With her mate dead, Moth Flight couldn't raise her kits on her own, both due to her youth and her job as a medicine cat. She ended up regretting her kits and the Clans enacted a law that medicine cats couldn't have children.
  • Vow of Celibacy: She's the reason that the medicine cats can never take a mate or have kits rule came to be. She realizes that her kits are a distraction, and she can't perform her duties to the best of her ability with them around, so she gives them up and makes the other medicine cats vow to never take mates.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: She doesn't want to be a disappointment to her mother Wind Runner.

Other Major Characters

    Jagged Peak

Jagged Peak

"[The other kits] only want to do dumb stuff. Pouncing on a pebble and pretending it's an eagle! I want to pounce on real eagles!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/151b50a34d12a0ff65a10e13286b88e0.jpg

The younger brother of Gray Wing and Clear Sky. Jagged Peak longs to join the Followers of the Sun Trail on their quest, but is unable to because of his young age. After Gray Wing boosts his confidence by teaching him some hunting skills, he runs away from home to follow the Sun Trail. Gray Wing follows after him to protect him, and Jagged Peak uses his excellent tracking skills to lead them to the Followers of the Sun Trail.

Once the Followers of the Sun Trail reach their new home, Jagged Peak leaves the moor with Clear Sky to live in the forest. However, while hunting he falls and injures his leg. With his recovery not going anywhere, Clear Sky exiles him from the forest, and he is taken back by the Moor Group. Self-confidence shattered, Jagged Peak now struggles to find a way to become useful to his companions.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Gray Wing started to find him grating back when they were in the Tribe. When Jagged Peak reveals his tracking skills, Gray Wing's annoyance with him fades.
  • Big Brother Worship: He is obsessed with his older brother Clear Sky, and always follows his decisions. This starts to change after Clear Sky exiles him for "being weak".
  • Buried Alive: In Thunder Rising, he has a rabbit tunnel collapse on him, but he survives.
  • Cassandra Truth: In The Blazing Star, he figures out that the five petals of the Blazing Star mean that the cats must split into five groups. However, Gray Wing cuts him off before he can finish explaining this.
  • Deer in the Headlights: In The Sun Trail, he stops in the middle of the road near Highstones. Clear Sky runs back and carries him the rest of the way.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father may have died or left when he was quite young, or was perhaps just never invested in his kits' lives. Either way, he's never mentioned, and Jagged Peak tends to admire and emulate his older brothers, especially Clear Sky.
  • Disney Death: It appeared that he had died protecting Thunder from the collapsing tunnel, and Gray Wing is fearing the worst. But then, Jagged Peak wakes up, coughing and dusty yet very much alive.
  • The Exile: Clear Sky kicks him out of his group after he breaks his leg.
  • Expy: Of Cinderpelt, what with his energetic attitude and broken leg. In Thunder Rising he finds a place for himself caring for kits, much like Cinderpelt found a new role as a medicine cat.
  • Genki Boy: He is usually upbeat and happy, but this changes significantly after his leg is broken.
  • Jumped at the Call: He desperately wanted to follow the Sun Trail, but his mother Quiet Rain wouldn't allow it.
  • Killed Offscreen: In a short story in The Ultimate Guide: Updated and Expanded Edition, he's shown in StarClan with Gray Wing, Quiet Rain and Shadowstar, welcoming Skystar when he loses his ninth life, showing he died sometime after the events of Shadowstar's Life.
  • The Mentor: He and Holly were this to Raven and Juniper when they first joined Tall Shadow's group, trying to teach them their ways.
  • Protectorate: Gray Wing vows to protect him and to help him find what lies at the end of the Sun Trail.
  • Rejected Apology: After Gray Wing defends Jagged Peak from Clear Sky while the latter bullies him in Thunder Rising, Clear Sky apologizes, but Jagged Peak calls him out, saying that he didn't seem sorry for kicking him out of the forest.
  • The Runaway: He runs away from the Tribe to find the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Saved by Canon: According to The Ultimate Guide, he raises a family on the moor, meaning that whatever gets thrown at him, he can't die until he has a mate and kits. In The Blazing Star, he gets together with Holly, and has three kits with her. His plot armour for A Forest Divided and The Path of Stars is officially gone.
  • Sibling Team: Early on in The Sun Trail, Jagged Peak and his brother Gray Wing work together as a team to navigate the mountains and reach the other Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Sneaky Departure: Kicks off Gray Wing's story by sneaking away from the Tribe and running off to join the Followers of the Sun Trail, forcing Gray Wing to go after him.
  • Tagalong Kid: He is the youngest member of the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After Gray Wing pushes him too far in The Blazing Star, Jagged Peak slugs him hard, and Gray Wing is shocked to see that his little brother was actually fighting.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: He's much grumpier after being rejected by Clear Sky, and even snaps at Thunder in The First Battle. However, he shows his softer side to some cats, including Rainswept Flower.
    • He (along with Holly) also shuns Moth Flight after learning she's pregnant with Micah's kittens, believing her to become untrustworthy. But Storm Pelt and Dew Nose call their parents out on their behavior.

    Turtle Tail

Turtle Tail

"Everything beyond the mountains is going to feel strange. It's just a case of getting used to a different way of living."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c55094183d4ec98ba2f2af7f55a6dd81.jpg

Gray Wing's sarcastic best friend. Although he thinks of her as only a friend, she has a not-so-secret crush on him, and is frustrated when he doesn't reciprocate. When Gray Wing falls in love with a rogue named Storm, Turtle Tail leaves the moor to become a kittypet, living with her friend Bumble. Their owners soon bring in a third cat named Tom, who Turtle tail gets together with to try to ease the pain of Gray Wing's rejection. However, Tom hides a secret cruel side, and attempts to manipulate Turtle Tail when she becomes pregnant. She returns to the moor permanently, giving birth to three kits she names Owl Eyes, Sparrow Fur, and Pebble Heart. Gray Wing becomes a father figure to her kits, and eventually reciprocates her love, becoming her mate.

  • Alliterative Name: Turtle Tail.
  • Betty and Veronica: She's supportive of Gray Wing and very kind and loyal, making her the Betty to the blunt and sarcastic Storm.
  • Blood from the Mouth: At her death in The First Battle.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Leaves the Followers of the Sun Trail to go live with Bumble.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: She clearly loves Gray Wing, but just can't bring herself to tell him. Later she leaves the moor because she realizes that Gray Wing is in love with Storm and she'll never be able to tell him.
  • Did Not Get The Guy: She loved Gray Wing, but he hardly even noticed her. However, in Thunder Rising, he finally realizes that he loves her.
  • Everyone Can See It: It's obvious to most of the other characters that Turtle Tail is deeply in love with Gray Wing.
  • First Girl Wins: Averted. It's implied that Gray Wing may have feelings for Bright Stream, and then he falls in love with Storm. But as of Thunder Rising, this is played straight.
  • From Stray to Pet: After she realizes her feelings for Gray Wing are unrequited, she joins her friend Bumble as a kittypet (later goes back to the forest, however.)
  • Happily Married: Once she becomes mates with Gray Wing, their relationship can be most accurately described as "adorable domestic bliss".
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Bumble. She is very good friends with Bumble, and eventually moves in with her. In Thunder Rising, she's also devastated when Bumble dies.
  • Jumped at the Call: She was eager to follow the Sun Trail.
  • Look Both Ways: In The First Battle, she dies when she is hit by a car while pursuing Tom.
  • Mama Bear: In The First Battle, Tom steals her kits, causing her to go ballistic and take off in pursuit to rescue them.
  • Meaningful Name: She's named for her stumpy tail.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Has this reaction in Thunder Rising when she realizes that if she had let Bumble stay on the moor, her friend would still be alive.
  • Not Good with Rejection: In The Sun Trail, she can't face Gray Wing knowing that his heart belongs to someone else, so she leaves the moor and moves in with Bumble. However, she returns to the moor in Thunder Rising.
  • Parental Substitute: In The First Battle, after she dies, Turtle Tail meets Wind Runner's dead son Emberkit, and takes care of him in StarClan.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She gives a fierce one to Clear Sky after Bumble dies:
Turtle Tail: "You're power-mad, Clear Sky. You don't care who you hurt to get what you want. And now...you're not the cat I came down from the mountains with. You're...you're an apology for a cat."
  • The Skeptic: She didn't believe in Thunderpaths or Twolegs when the Tribe Elders told her about them.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: She and Gray Wing had known each other since they were kits, but he loved Storm more than her...at first.
  • Victorious Childhood Friend: Gray Wing eventually has a Love Epiphany, and Turtle Tail is able to be mates with the tom she's loved since kithood.
  • You Fool!: She calls Clear Sky a fool in The First Battle after coming back as a spirit.

    Petal

Petal

"I'll work hard and improve my hunting skills. And I'm pretty sure that in the future no cat will be able to push me around..."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7153.jpeg

When she was just a kit, Petal lost her mother to a badger. After being attacked when they tried to ask another cat for help, Petal and her brother Fox decided that they could only rely on each other. However, her beliefs started to change when she met the forest group. Petal is the protagonist of The Sun Trail's Bonus Scene.

  • Action Girl: She is quite strong, and can hold her own against formidable fighters like Clear Sky, Gray Wing, and Moon Shadow.
  • And This Is for...: As Petal attacks Gray Wing in The First Battle, she says, "That's for my brother, you murdering snake-heart!"
  • Bully Hunter: She fancies herself as someone who puts a stop to bullies in the forest.
  • Co-Dragons: In The First Battle, Petal and Snake are Clear Sky's two most loyal followers, and are the most eager to fight for him. He uses them both as his main enforcers.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She is the main character of The Sun Trail's Bonus Scene.
  • The Dragon: Acts as Clear Sky's second in command after the death of her brother Fox.
  • Family Theme Naming: Not biological family, but after she takes on the role of mother to Misty's kits, she names them Birch and Alder, both plant-related names like her own. She also names them both after trees.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: In The Blazing Star, when she becomes sick along with Birch and Alder, she gives them all of her food to make sure they survive. She manages to save them, but dies from her illness.
  • Hidden Depths: She seems to be a random jerkish character in the main story, but in the Bonus Scene you find out that she's an orphan who worked with her brother Fox to survive and hates bullies. As well, in Thunder Rising, Thunder is surprised to find out just how soft and motherly she is with Birch and Alder, her adopted kits.
  • History Repeats: She acts as the catalyst for this; she kills Misty, leaving her two kits orphaned, just as her own mother was killed by a badger, leaving her two kits orphaned.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: In The Blazing Star, Petal catches the sickness and ends up dying just as Clear Sky makes it home.
  • Ironic Name: Quoth Thunder in Thunder Rising, "Which cat named her 'Petal'? There's nothing soft about her!"
  • It's Personal: In Thunder Rising, Petal fights Misty, the hostile cat who she left her for dead after her mother died. Thunder wants to help her, but Clear Sky says that he should remember Petal's connection to Misty.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Thunder Rising, after she and Clear Sky discover Misty's kits, she is horrified to realize that Misty was just trying to protect her kits when they killed her.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. Her name is both the name of Petalnose before joining SkyClan and that of one of the Sisters in Tree's Roots.
  • Parental Substitute: In Thunder Rising, after Clear Sky kills Misty, Petal becomes mother to Misty's kits.
  • Revenge:
    • Thunder Rising has her getting her revenge on Misty, the cat who left her to starve after her mother died. She does so with relish. However, she has no quarrel with Misty's kits, and resolves to raise them with their mother dead.
    • In The First Battle, she goes after Gray Wing to avenge her brother Fox.
  • Sibling Team: She and her brother Fox rely on each other, hunting and fighting together.
  • Villain Team-Up: She and her brother team up with fellow antagonists Frost, Leaf, and Clear Sky when they join the forest group.

    Gorse Fur

Gorse/Gorse Fur (Gorsestar)

"Sure, but can we just eat?"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3b0077c75cf0132e92850ecbcf18da09.jpg

A strong and somewhat dorky tom who lives on the moor with Wind. He initially dislikes the Followers of the Sun Trail, but warms up to them as Wind does. Was born by the river, but moved to the moor because he felt it suited him better. He also loves eating, but hates fish.

Gorse will go on to be the first deputy of WindClan under his mate, Wind. After she dies, he will succeed her as leader.

  • Battle Couple: Fights alongside his mate, Wind.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's furious of the notion of taking the injured Wind Runner to the Moonstone fearing that she will die. He didn't realize she'd be completely healed and given 8 more lives though.
  • Big Eater: Interrupts Wind's conversation with Gray Wing to ask if he can start a meal by himself. He also really likes food in general. He later meets a kindred spirit in River Ripple.
  • Crash-Into Hello: He and Wind first meet Gray Wing when they crash into each other on the moor.
  • Diving Save: When Moth Flight is distracted on the Thunderpath in Moth Flight's Vision, he slams into her, pushing her out of the way of a monster.
  • Expy: He is fairly similar to Graystripe, with his love of food and adorability.
  • Good Parents: Dotes over his kits and though he scolds Moth Flight harshly for nearing getting hit by a car, he nonetheless cares deeply for her and he tries to prevent her from leaving to become the first medicine cat.
  • The Leader: One day, after his mate joins the ranks of StarClan, he will lead WindClan.
  • Meaningful Rename: Lightning Tail suggests renaming Gorse and Wind so that their names fit in more with the mountain cat names. Gorse gets Gorse Fur as his new name, because of the way the fur on his head sticks up. There's also the fact that he is stated to be the second leader of WindClan so he'll eventually become Gorsestar to show that.
  • Number Two: He's WindClan's deputy under his mate, Wind.
  • So Proud of You: He says this to Moth Flight after she makes the announcement to the Clans that there will be medicine cats.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He and Gray Wing aren't friends at first, but they gradually warm up to each other.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Briefly in Moth Flights Vision he's a stern overprotective dad, who scolds Moth Flight for running off and nearly getting hit by a car.
  • Tuft of Head Fur: He was named after his spiky head fur.

    Lightning Tail

Lightning Tail

"Where you lead, we will all follow."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7154.jpeg

The son of Hawk Swoop and Jackdaw's Cry, and brother to both Acorn Fur and Thunder (the latter by adoption). An energetic kit who is great friends with Thunder.

He will go on to become Lightningtail, first deputy of ThunderClan.

  • Brains and Brawn: He's the brains, Thunder is the brawn. Lightning Tail is pretty smart and comes up with plans for the two of them (such as in The First Battle where he figures out how to exploit Tom's weaknesses to get the kits back), while Thunder handles the heavy lifting.
  • Cool Teacher: To Apple Blossom. Apple Blossom has fond memories of him teaching her and even states that he never got impatient with her.
  • Doomed by Canon: We know that he never becomes Clan leader, and Owl Eyes is just a few moons younger than him, so there's something bad in his future. He ultimately dies after saving Thunderstar from some dogs.
  • Friend to All Children: In "Thunderstar's Echo" it's mentioned that he had always loved kits, that he was always willing to play with them and that they loved him. Lightning Tail also always had an exciting story to tell to the young ones.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Dies giving his life to save Thunderstar from some dogs in "Thunderstar's Echo". Thunderstar initially assumes it's a Senseless Sacrifice, as he had lives to spare, but StarClan assure him that it wasn't and that the dogs would have just killed him over and over if Lightning Tail hadn't helped him escape.
  • Meaningful Name: He got his name because he was always hanging around Thunder.
  • The Mentor: To Apple Blossom. And unofficially to Clover and Thistle, though Leaf later offered to take over mentoring one of them.
  • Number Two: He was ThunderClan's first deputy under Thunderstar's command, until he died in Thunderstar's Echo.
  • Please Wake Up:
    • In The First Battle, he's convinced that Turtle Tail is just unconscious and tries to wake her up. Thunder has to snap him out of it.
    • Later in The First Battle, Lightning Tail and Acorn Fur think their mother Hawk Swoop is just knocked out. They quickly realize that she's dead, however.
  • Sibling Team: Adopted sibling team, but it still counts. He follows Thunder everywhere and does everything he does. In fact, he's even going to be part of a leadership team, as he will be deputy of ThunderClan, with Thunder as leader.
  • Theme Naming: Hawk Swoop did it intentionally because Lightning Tail was such good friends with Thunder. Thunder and Lightning Tail make Thunder and Lightning.

  • Scars Are Forever: She has a permanent scar on her belly, which she received when fighting the fox that killed Cricket.
  • Second Love: For Gray Wing, as she's his new mate after Turtle Tail died. Amusingly, she's actually his fourth love. He had a crush on Bright Stream, then fell in love with Storm, then loved Turtle Tail, and then fell in love with her.

"Once I choose my allies, I am willing to die for them. For all my mistakes, I never betrayed my father. And, if you trust me, I will never betray you."

A mysterious she-cat who appears at the Four Trees wishing to meet Thunder in The Blazing Star. She offers to train him, and he starts to develop feelings for her. However, she is actually the daughter of One Eye, a villainous rogue who took over the forest, and was feeding him information about the cats in the hollow. Outraged at her deception, Thunder drives her away after One Eye is slain.

In A Forest Divided, she returns, and is taken in by Clear Sky when he and Thunder find her starving in the forest. Promising to be loyal to her new companions, she starts to worm her way into Clear Sky's heart.

  • Birds of a Feather: With Clear Sky. They're equally clever, they have matching ruthless streaks, they're both atoning for past evils caused by said ruthlessness, and they're both truly dedicated when they commit themselves to someone or something.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: She made one to Slash when they were younger. Ultimately, however, she falls in love and becomes mates with Clear Sky.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Downplayed. Her love and loyalty for her father are why she acts as a spy, but she admits she regrets doing it in A Forest Divided.
  • Damsel in Distress: At the end of A Forest Divided, Slash abducts her to give Clear Sky an incentive to deliver his fresh-kill. However, it's left unclear whether Star Flower is actually working with Slash and playing Clear Sky, or if her abduction was genuine until Path of Stars, where it's revealed that she is indeed on the side of the heroes.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Her pupils are described as star-shaped, like the Blazing Flower. A more realistic interpretation of this is that she has darker streaks in her iris that just extend from the pupil.
  • Family Theme Naming: Her kits from her first litter all have plant-related names, and so does she.
  • Femme Fatale: She's gorgeous, boldly flirtatious, and used Thunder to get information on the Clans. Her allure is such that Clear Sky still falls for her despite having the knowledge that Star Flower has played toms before in the back of his mind. Fortunately, Star Flower's regret over that is genuine, as are her feelings for Clear Sky.
  • Foreshadowing: During one of her meetings with Thunder, she expresses disbelief that one of his friends doesn't realize that family is the most important thing ever. This hints that she has some sort of strong familial ties, which turn out to link her to One Eye, her father.
  • Good All Along: The end of A Forest Divided casts doubt on whether she is actually trustworthy, only for Path of Stars to reveal that she is indeed one of the good guys.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: She refuses to touch the rabbit Clear Sky catches for her in Path of Stars until all the hunting patrols have returned. When they do, she trades the rabbit for a mouse the second Clear Sky admits the camp would appreciate it.
  • Happily Married: Despite the others' doubts, she proves herself to be this with Clear Sky, and in Shadowstar's Life she's expecting their second litter.
  • Hit Me, Dammit!: In Path of Stars, she has to convince Thunder to attack her during training so that she can demonstrate the moves she knows. She points out that she's not made out of cherry blossoms and that if she can give birth to three kits then she can certainly teach them some battle moves.
  • I Reject Your Reality: While Star Flower regrets the evil she caused by staying loyal to her father, she never acknowledges that he was an evil monster, and even calls him a "true ray of light" after his death.
  • Last Girl Wins: She's the third and final of Clear Sky's mates, the one who gets to have a family and a life with him, and according to Kate, the one he picks in StarClan.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: In A Forest Divided, Thunder tells Clear Sky that Star Flower only wants to be with Clear Sky because he's so much like One Eye. In Path of Stars, it's shown that he's wrong, and she actually does truly care for Clear Sky.
  • Love Interest: For Thunder. He's attracted to her, and they immediately hit it off. However, any future relationship is on uncertain ground after he finds out that she betrayed him. In A Forest Divided, she becomes this for Clear Sky, becoming his mate and birthing his kits in the next book.
  • Maternity Crisis: In Path of Stars, she goes into labor while fleeing from Slash's rogues. Luckily, ShadowClan is nearby to help her.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother isn't seen among One-Eye's rogues, and Star Flower later tells Clear Sky that she died with Star Flower's siblings.
  • The Mole: She's actually a member of One Eye's rogues, and was feeding One Eye information on Thunder and the Moor Group.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: She tells Clear Sky this in A Forest Divided. He snaps back that he never betrayed anyone, and she points out that others - like Rainswept Flower, whom he killed - wouldn't agree.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Her son Tiny Branch is killed by a fox in Moth Flight's Vision.
  • Pregnant Hostage: Slash takes her captive in the last two books of Dawn of the Clans.
  • Refuge in Audacity: She's worried about Clear Sky when he goes to visit his sick mother Quiet Rain. So what does she do? Boldly walk into the camp full of cats she betrayed for her father and start talking openly to them, of course. Tall Shadow is described as staring at her in amazement.
  • Regretful Traitor: In A Forest Divided, she reveals to Clear Sky that she does regret betraying Thunder.
  • Second Love: She's Clear Sky's third mate after Bright Stream and Storm.
  • Sole Survivor: Her mother and siblings died when she was little, in an incident she doesn't remember but One Eye refused to talk about.
  • Undying Loyalty: One of her virtues, as her character quote shows. Once Star Flower has chosen to be loyal to you, nothing will break that. It was bad for Thunder, as she'd chosen to be loyal to her father long ago, but it's good for Clear Sky, as she chooses to be loyal to him and SkyClan.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Her father One Eye is absolutely hideous looking. Meanwhile, she's very beautiful. Thunder even lampshades it by wondering, "How could something so beautiful come from something so ugly?"
  • Vague Age: We know the old One Eye is her father, but not when he actually sired her. It's implied she's actually closer to Clear Sky's age than Thunder's, as she refers to Thunder as a "young cat" who will move on from her.
  • Walking Spoiler: She turns out to be a spy for a group of rogues that Thunder is fighting against. This reveal comes so late in The Blazing Star that any accurate discussion of her is filled with massive spoilers.

Thunder's Camp (New Forest Group)

    Owl Eyes

Owl Eyes (Owlstar)

"I just think we should be careful. Cats have been killed on the Thunderpath. I don’t want any more cats to die."

One of Turtle Tail's sons with Tom. He will go on to become the second leader of ThunderClan.

  • Defector from Decadence: Leaves Clear Sky's group with Thunder after disagreeing over hunting patrols.
  • Happily Adopted: He was quite happy with Gray Wing as his father.
  • Heroic Bastard: He's the result of a one-off fling between Turtle Tail and Tom. He's definitely going to be a hero though, as he goes down in history as a wise and respected leader of ThunderClan.
  • The Leader: He's confirmed by Word of God to be Owlstar, the second leader of ThunderClan.
  • Meaningful Name: His eyes resemble those of an owl's.
  • Meaningful Rename: Not yet, but he eventually goes on to become ThunderClan's leader, so he'll reflect this by renaming himself Owlstar.
  • The Mentor: To Snail Shell.
  • Number Two: He becomes this after Lightning Tail is killed by dogs.
  • Sneaky Departure: In Thunder Rising, he leaves the camp when nobody is looking to go and hunt on his own. A group of cats led by Gray Wing have to track him down and rescue him when he gets himself in trouble.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He has the same lean, lithe shape as his mother, Turtle Tail.

    Cloud Spots

Cloud Spots

"We'll have to be careful. If we eat too much, we'll get too fat to hunt, and then where will we be?"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0ecc493c524e2835f1549bacbad0420a.jpg

A tom with a penchant for herbs. However, his healing with healing can't make up for his lack of patience.

Cloud Spots will go on to be the first medicine cat of ThunderClan.

  • Afraid of Blood: In Thunder Rising, Gray Wing notes that despite Cloud Spots' experience with herbs, he looks queasy at the sight of the newborn kits still covered in blood.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He's somewhat out there, and wonders about odd things, like whether the Tribe cats will get too fat to move if they eat a lot.
  • The Medic: He's very good with herbs, and he uses his knowledge of them to help the other Followers of the Sun Trail. He's also ThunderClan's first medicine cat, Cloudspots, as confirmed by Word of God.
  • The Mentor: In Thunder Rising, he teaches Pebble Heart about herbs when the young tom is curious about them. In Thunderstar's Echo he is shown mentoring Shivering Rose on how to be a medicine cat.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: With Dappled Pelt. She's energetic and somewhat reckless, while he only cares about herbs.
  • Take a Third Option: In The First Battle the moor cats are arguing whether or not they should attack Clear Sky. They've reached a stalemate when Cloud Spots interrupts, pointing out that they don't have any prey stored, and that feeding themselves is a higher priority than dealing with Clear Sky.

    Leaf

Leaf

"You fight like half-dead rabbits. You only won this time because there are more of you. But just watch your tails if you come back."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7156.jpeg

An unkind tom who is friends with Nightheart, Petal, and Fox. He joins the forest group near the end of The Sun Trail.

  • Character Development: Goes through some in A Forest Divided. At first, he dislikes Milkweed and considers her useless because she doesn't hunt. However, after she joins Thunder's group and is able to hunt, Leaf comes to respect her and understands that all cats have value. He starts a relationship with her at the end of the book and they end up having two litters of kits.
  • Defector from Decadence: He leaves Clear Sky's group to join Thunder after disagreeing with him over hunting patrols.
  • Happily Married: With Milkweed, the very cat he once disliked. They end up having two litters of kits.
  • Hiss Before Fleeing: He snarls at Gray Wing's group before running away.
  • Jerkass: He attacks Moon Shadow and is very rude when Gray Wing tries to break up the fight. He is also rude to Thunder in Thunder Rising, and in A Forest Divided, he loses it when Milkweed takes the prey he caught. However, he starts to become less of a jerk after joining Thunder.
  • The Mentor: Maybe. After Lightning Tail mentions training Clover and Thistle, Leaf offers to take over training one of them, but this is not mentioned again.
  • No Name Given: In The Sun Trail, he wasn't actually named. The Bonus Scene revealed that he and the swimming she-cat were "Leaf and Nightheart", but it wasn't revealed until Thunder Rising that he was Leaf and she was Nightheart (as the fandom thought).
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. He shares his name with Leaf from Firestar's Quest, who becomes Leafstar, as well as a tom born to the Sisters who appears in Squirrelflight's Hope and Darkness Within.
  • Out of Focus: He's a supporting character in The Sun Trail, Thunder Rising, and The First Battle, but he does next to nothing in The Blazing Star.
  • Pet the Dog: He's a jerk, but he also seems to be friends with the orphaned Fox and Petal. He also gives Thunder a respectful compliment about his fighting skills.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: His daughter Shivering Rose and his son Hazel Burrow from his first litter with Milkweed are black and white like him.
  • Villain Team-Up: Teams up with fellow antagonists Frost, Fox, Petal, and Clear Sky when he joins the forest group.

    Pink Eyes

Pink Eyes

"Pink Eyes's weak eyesight had strengthened his other senses. The white tom could hear a mouse in the next glade and smell a rabbit through a patch of wild garlic."

An albino tom who joined Clear Sky sometime before the events of A Forest Divided. He ends up leaving Clear Sky to join Thunder's group, and does lookout duty for him.

    Violet Dawn

Violet Dawn/Violet

"I won't let anything happen to you! You're going to be father to my kits one day. I need you."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7157.png

A former rogue from Slash's camp. She joins Thunder's group after he and Lightning Tail rescue them from dogs, and eventually becomes Thunder's mate.

  • Big "NEVER!": Her response when Slash tries to pressure her to be his mate.
  • Happily Married: With Thunderstar in Thunderstar's Echo.
  • Nice Girl: When reflecting on how the rogues are settling in, Thunder recalls that Violet is kind to everyone, hard-working, and works hard to be helpful around the camp. She also tries to see the best in the anti-social Ember, encouraging Thunder that he has a good heart and just needs time to settle in.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. Her name before officially joining the Clans was Violet, which is shared with Barley's sister.
  • Satellite Love Interest: She doesn't get much role or personality outside of being Thunder's mate.
  • Second Love: Thunder's hers, as her previous mate Rain died on the Thunderpath.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Kind, but no pushover—she firmly rebuffs Slash's advances and berates him for just being a bully who steals.

    Milkweed

Milkweed

"I want to come with you so I can help! Clear Sky kept promising I could hunt, but he never sent me out with a patrol."

A she-cat who joins Clear Sky's group to protect her newborn kits after one of them dies. She and her kits later join Thunder when he forms his own group, and she has two more litters with Leaf.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Maybe. Her mate Leaf, and according to Word of God, her former mate Splinter, are both jerks.
  • Defector from Decadence: She leaves Clear Sky's group to join Thunder.
  • Family Theme Naming: All her kits from her first litter have plant related names, as does she.
  • Happily Married: With Leaf, who she once disliked. They end up having two litters of kits.
  • Has a Type: Maybe. Her mate is Leaf, a black and white cat who's a bit of a jerk. Word of God also states that the father of her first litter is Slash's rogue Splinter, also a black and white cat, who's much more of a jerk.
  • Mama Bear: To her first kits Clover and Thistle, who she joins Clear Sky and then Thunder to protect.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Clover and Thistle's littermate, Bramble, died of starvation after being born sickly, which compels her to join the mountain cats.
  • Properly Paranoid: Doesn't want to join Clear Sky at first because he killed Misty. Gray Wing fortunately convinces her Clear Sky has changed.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her son from her third litter, Patch Pelt, is ginger and black like her.
  • Word of God: On Kate Cary's blog, it is stated that Splinter, one of Slash's Co-Dragons, is the father of her first litter.

    Clover

Clover

One of Milkweed's daughters from her first litter.

  • The Apprentice: She and her brother were trained by Lightning Tail. Later Leaf offers to take over mentoring one of them.
  • Defector from Decadence: Along with her mother and brother, leaves Clear Sky's group to join Thunder.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father isn't part of her life. According to Kate Cary's blog, her father is Splinter, one of Slash's Co-Dragons.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted in a sense. One of SkyClan's queens also had the name Clover before joining SkyClan.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With Thistle.
  • Tagalong Kid: She and her brother, as kits, followed their mother wherever she went.
  • Theme Naming: She and her littermates, as well as their mother, have plant-related names.

    Thistle

Thistle

Milkweed's son from her first litter.

  • The Apprentice: He and his sister were unofficially trained by Lightning Tail. Later Leaf offers to take over mentoring one of them.
  • Defector from Decadence: Along with his mother and sister, leaves Clear Sky's group to join Thunder.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father isn't part of his life. According to Kate Cary's blog, his father is Splinter, one of Slash's Co-Dragons.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. In A Vision of Shadows, one of the rogues in Darktail's Kin is named Thistle.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With Clover.
  • Tagalong Kid: He and his sister, as kits, followed their mother wherever she went.
  • Theme Naming: He and his littermates, as well as their mother, have plant-related names.

    Snail Shell

Snail Shell

Gooseberry and Yew Tail's son.

    Blue Whisker

Blue Whisker

"Is that where StarClan lives? In the sky?"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_whisker_2.png

She was born to Moth Flight before the medicine cat code about never taking a mate and having kits came to be. Her mother found it difficult to take care of her Clan and her kits at the same time, so she gave them to the four other Clans. Moving to ThunderClan she was adopted by Thunderstar, the ThunderClan leader. After meeting, Blue Whisker and Shivering Rose became inseparable as kits and retained their close friendship as grown cats.

  • Family Eye Resemblance: Green eyes, like both her parents and her brothers.
  • Meaningful Name: She has translucent whiskers that have a blue tinge in certain lights.
  • Motor Mouth: She has become this by the time of the Moth Flight's Vision manga.

  • Strong Family Resemblance: She's white with yellow splotches like her sister, Bubbling Stream.

  • The Bait: In The Blazing Star, she taunts One Eye when everyone regroups and prepares to fight him again.

  • The Determinator: In The Blazing Star, she's so determined to see her biological father that she travels to the forest on her own, and then when a vicious cat says she'll have to fight him, she does so, despite her youth and lack of skill. It reminds Clear Sky of her mother, Turtle Tail.

  • Who Would Be Stupid Enough?: Doesn't tell anyone about Owl Eyes running off to catch a hare because she doesn't think that Owl Eyes would actually be stupid enough to run off and try to catch a hare.
  • You Are in Command Now: She is deputy at the time of Skystar's final death, and is shown on the Warriors website family tree to have become leader of SkyClan.

    Quick Water

Quick Water

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7159.jpeg

  • Almost Dead Guy: In Shadowstar's Life, she has the strength for a few last words before she dies.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: She leaves the Followers of the Sun Trail along with Jagged Peak, Clear Sky, Moon Shadow, and Falling Feather to form a new group.
  • Cats Hate Water: Played very straight with her. Not only does she hate crossing rivers, she hates even getting her paws wet. Jagged Peak jokes she should be named No Water.
  • Ironic Name: She hates water, much to the amusement of Turtle Tail.
  • Mutual Kill: With Shadowstar.
  • Villain's Dying Grace: As she dies, she confesses to her murders and the reasons why she did it, and begs for forgiveness not only from the cat she mutually killed, but from everyone else as well.

    Nettle

Nettle

"I don't want to hurt my friend!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7160.jpeg

A tom that joins Clear Sky's group with his best friend Fircone during Thunder Rising.

  • Last Episode, New Character: Isn't introduced until the last chapter of Thunder Rising.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. In A Vision of Shadows, one of Darktail's rogues is named Nettle.
  • Out of Focus: He's somewhat important in Thunder Rising and The First Battle, but he does hardly anything in The Blazing Star.
  • The Smart Guy: He's rather perceptive. For example, he's the first cat to notice that Thorn is sick.
  • Those Two Guys: Always seen in the company of Fircone in Thunder Rising and The First Battle.

    Alder

Alder

"Why can't all cats just be friends? Just because we live in different places doesn't mean we have to fight."

A younger member of Clear Sky's group. Clear Sky killed her mother, Misty, without realizing that she was just trying to protect Alder and her brother Birch. Feeling sorry for them, Petal took in Alder and Birch and raised them as her own. Alder grows up to be a strong and loyal member of Clear Sky's group.

  • Disappeared Dad: While we know the fate of Alder's mother (killed by Clear Sky while defending Alder and her brother), who her father is and what happened to him is never revealed.
  • Genki Girl: Somewhat. In A Forest Divided, she's seen chasing the tail of Pink Eyes.
  • Happily Adopted: She accepts Petal as her new mother pretty easily, and loved her a lot.
  • Mercy Kill: Subverted. Clear Sky offered to kill her so as to not prolong her suffering, but Thunder and Petal stopped him.
  • Theme Naming: She and her brother are both named after trees, and their adoptive mother also has a plant-related name.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Unintentionally gives one to Clear Sky in The First Battle, asking him why all the cats can't just exist in harmony.

    Birch

Birch

"We've always had a safe nest to sleep in and prey to eat. Star Flower's kits deserve the same. They haven't done anything wrong."

The son of Misty, who was killed by Clear Sky. Petal takes in Birch and his sister Alder and raises them as her own.

  • The Cynic: In Path of Stars, he is shown to be highly skeptical of Star Flower's motives. However, it turns out to be unfounded, as Star Flower was genuine.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father is a complete nonentity, and who he was or if he cares about Birch and his sister is never revealed.
  • Happily Adopted: Accepts Petal as his new mother and definitely loves her.
  • Mercy Kill: Subverted. Clear Sky was going to kill him so that he wouldn't suffer, but was stopped by Thunder and Petal.
  • Theme Naming: He and his sister are both named after trees, and their adoptive mother also has a plant-related name.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Subverted; in Path of Stars, he asks whether Clear Sky would have considered taking up Slash's offer if Star Flower hadn't been his mate. Clear Sky angrily refutes that he would do the same for any of his camp.

    Thorn

Thorn

"Thorn looks scrawny, but [she's] wily, and as fast as a ferret."

A former friend of Wind Runner and Gorse Fur, who grew more hostile when the Followers of the Sun Trail showed up in the forest. In The First Battle, Thorn joins Clear Sky after giving him information he learned from spying on the Moor Group with his ally Dew.

Thorn is a sickly tom with splotchy fur. However, Thorn and Dew's descriptions are mixed up in the allegiances for a few books.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: He and Dew are mentioned briefly by Wind Runner and Gorse Fur in Thunder Rising as an example of cats that had become more hostile with the arrival of the Followers of the Sun Trail. In The First Battle however, the information he gives Clear Sky about what's going on in the Moor Group's camp leads him to believe that Gray Wing is planning a battle. This misunderstanding escalates, eventually leading to the Great Battle at the Four Trees.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When asked about his sickness by Nettle, he claims to be molting.
  • Ear Notch: He has notched ears.
  • The Ghost: In Thunder Rising, he's never actually seen, only mentioned by Wind and Gorse as an example of tempers flaring in the forest because of the Forest and Moor Groups. However, subverted when he appears and plays an important role in The First Battle.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's minor character in The First Battle, but the information he gives to Clear Sky sets off a series of misunderstandings that leads to the battle at the Four Trees.
  • Stealth Expert: Apparently, since in The First Battle he was able to sneak into the Moor Group's camp and watch what was going on.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Wind and Gorse explain that with Clear Sky laying down barriers, he has grown much more hostile. Thorn and Dew once would have shared a rabbit they had just caught with Wind and Gorse, but now they just opt to chase them off on sight.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Dew used to be good pals with Wind and Gorse, but now they treat them like prey stealers.

The daughter of Hawk Swoop and Jackdaw's Cry. Sister to Lightning Tail and Thunder (the latter by adoption). A minor character in Thunder Rising, but is hinted to have a greater role in the series. • Ascended Extra: Happens in "Moth Flight's Vision" after she becomes SkyClan's second medicine cat.

  • Genki Girl: From what little we see of her in Thunder Rising, she appears to be full of energy and excitement.
  • The Medic: When Micah comes to SkyClan Acorn Fur is asked to watch him by Clear Sky. Acorn Fur learned a lot about healing and herbs during this time. When Micah died, Acorn Fur became the new medicine cat for her Clan.
  • Odd Name Out: Her name doesn't follow the Theme Naming of her brothers Thunder and Lightning Tail.
  • Offscreen Romance: Her relationship with Red Claw is never shown, only mentioned by her to the other medicine cats.
  • Please Wake Up: In The First Battle, Acorn Fur and Lightning Tail at first think their mother Hawk Swoop was just knocked out during the first battle and try to wake up. However, they quickly realize that she is dead.
  • She Is All Grown Up: In The First Battle, Thunder returns to the moor and finds that she's an adult cat now, and is much more pretty.

    Micah

Micah

  • The Medic: Knows about herbs and taught Moth Flight about catmint. He was also SkyClan's first medicine cat.

The daughter of Skystar and Star Flower, as well as the half-sister of Thunderstar.

  • Alliterative Name: Flower Foot.
  • Posthumous Sibling: She and her littermates are born after the deaths of two of their half-siblings, Thunderstar's littermates.
  • Theme Naming: She and her littermates all have plant-related names, as does their mother.

    Blossom

Blossom

"They need food more than you! Can't you see that? They’re half-starved!"

A cat who joins Clear Sky's group between The Blazing Star and A Forest Divided.

  • Friend to All Children: Possibly, if her quote is anything to go by.
  • Nice Girl: Willing to give food to Milkweed and her kits first, despite them not being part of the group.

    Red Claw

Red Claw/Red

"No. Clear Sky is a good leader. You're lucky to have him. If you think he's bad, then you've never met a cat like Slash. I can't believe you'd think I'd betray him!"

A former member of Slash's group, and one of their best hunters, who runs away in fear after leading the dogs to them. He joins Clear Sky's group without telling them this, which makes them take a while to trust him.

  • The Corruptible: Subverted. As part of a Secret Test of Character, Clear Sky has Nettle tempt him into doing certain things that go against their values. Red refuses, and shows he is pure of heart.
  • Career Versus Man: Is the "Man" for Acorn Fur. After StarClan decrees that medicine cats cannot have mates or kits, she is forced to choose to be his mate or the medicine cat. She chooses her career over him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Was part of Slash's group, constantly abused and underfed, then escaped after leading dogs on to them by mistake, which end up killing a few of them. This causes him problems in both his own group and with others.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: In Moth Flight's Vision, he and Acorn Fur start to grow closer, and eventually talk about sharing a nest. However, Moth Flight tells the medicine cats that due to her own troubles it is best if medicine cats focus on all Clanmates equally, and StarClan agrees and establishes that medicine cats cannot take a mate or have kits. Acorn Fur chooses StarClan.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. When his past is revealed to Clear Sky's group, it takes time and two secret tests of character to convince Clear Sky he is loyal. He also isn't forgiven by Willow Tail for leading the dogs on to them by mistake, to the point where she instigates a fight between WindClan and SkyClan just to kill him.
    • However, he is quick to forgive others. After he finds out about Clear Sky's test of character, he only needs to remember that Clear Sky has kits to understand why he absolutely needs to know he can trust him. After Willow Tail admits everything she did, and apologizes as she is dying, he forgives her for causing the battle.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: Unclear whether it's this, but ultimately subverted. He and Acorn Fur start to fall in love after she treats his wounds, but don't end up together, as StarClan makes it a rule that medicine cats cannot have a mate or kits to distract from their duties, and Acorn Fur chooses her duties over him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Like many of the rogues in Slash's group, he isn't evil, but simply desperate and afraid of his leader. After proving himself to Clear Sky and renaming himself, he stands up to Slash and refuses to return.
  • Meaningful Rename: His name was originally Red. After he proves himself to Clear Sky, he and the other leaders agree to make Red and the other rogues part of their groups officially. Some of the rogues change their names to sound more like mountain cats, and Red chooses the name Red Claw, which Clear Sky calls "a good name for a fine hunter".
  • Nice Guy: Towards most of Slash's group, as he is one of the hunters, and later among Clear Sky's group, always ready to contribute, though this is also due to being eager to prove himself as a new addition. Also takes the blame for Nettle after he eats when they are supposed to be out hunting, which impresses Clear Sky.
  • Offscreen Romance: His brief relationship with Acorn Fur is never shown, only mentioned by Acorn Fur to the other medicine cats.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. His original name, Red, is both the name of Russetfur before joining ShadowClan and a rogue in SkyClan's Destiny.
  • Secret Test of Character: After Clear Sky finds out he was one of Slash's rogues, he sets up tests to prove his loyalty. First, he and Nettle hunt for the entire group, not eating until the group is fed. Nettle tries to tempt him into eating a bit, even eating himself, but Red refuses, even taking the blame when Clear Sky (secretly observing) confronts them. Later, Clear Sky has Nettle tell Red about his past, and suggest they overthrow him and put Red in his place. Red refuses, attacking Nettle, showing he isn't a traitor.

    Honey Pelt

Honey Pelt

  • Shared Family Quirks: It's been noted that he washes his paws the same way that his father Micah did.

    Pebble Heart

Pebble Heart

"No cat likes change, but change comes all the same."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7162.png

One of Turtle Tail's sons with Tom. He will eventually become the first medicine cat of ShadowClan.

  • Bad Liar: He does a truly awful job of hiding his prophetic dreams from Gray Wing once asked about them.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: From kithood, he has a connection to what will become StarClan, and frequently has prophetic dreams. In Thunder Rising, he mentions a dream about walking down the Mothermouth tunnel towards the Moonstone, a huge battle with Clear Sky at the centre, and something really bad at the edge of the forest. In The First Battle, he has a dream about Clear Sky and Gray Wing fighting. In The Blazing Star, he has apparently had another dream, but he refuses to tell Gray Wing until "the time is right".
  • Happily Adopted: He was quite happy with Gray Wing as his father.
  • Heroic Bastard: He was born from a one-off fling between Turtle Tail and Tom. He's still a heroic cat however, and just wants to heal his comrades.
  • Meaningful Name: His name comes from a white mark on his chest.
  • The Medic: He becomes the first medicine cat of ShadowClan in Moth Flight's Vision. At first, he learned some herbal knowledge from watching Cloud Spots and Dappled Pelt.
  • Nightmare Dreams: In Thunder Rising, he explains that some of his prophetic dreams manifest as nightmares, mainly the one about a huge battle with Clear Sky in the midst of it.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: He's been like this since he was a little kit. Even his adopted father Gray Wing would listen to him for advice.

    Mud Paws

Mud Paws

"Spirit-cats? Are you sure you weren’t... well...a bit confused after all that fighting?"

One of the three new cats who join the Moor Group at the beginning of The Blazing Star, along with Mouse Ear and Holly.

  • Meaningful Name: He is named after the black rings of fur around his paws.
  • Oh, Crap!: Freaks out when he learns that One Eye has joined Clear Sky's Forest Group.

    Mouse Ear

Mouse Ear

"It's easy for me to see Eagle Feather's progress with a clear eye. It seems more difficult to train one's own kit."

One of the three new cats who join the Moor Group at the beginning of The Blazing Star, along with Mud Paws and Holly.

  • Graceful Loser: Congratulates Raven Pelt when he is chosen as the new deputy, though does so stiffly.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: According to Holly, he's a grump, but deep down he's a nice guy.
  • Leader Wannabe: He competes with Juniper Branch to become Shadowstar's deputy after Sun Shadow is killed.
  • Meaningful Name: His name refers to his tiny ears.
  • The Mentor: To Eagle Feather, while he, his littermates and their parents were in Tall Shadow's group.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's not hugely important, but he kicked the plot of The Blazing Star into gear by telling the Moor Group what the Blazing Star was and showing them where to find it. As well, by leading Tall Shadow across the Thunderpath, he set her on the path to founding ShadowClan.
  • You Fool!: In The Blazing Star, he calls Clear Sky a fool for taking in One Eye.

    Sun Shadow

Sun Shadow

"I've grown to love it here. My Clanmates feel like kin now. We quarrel sometimes, but we look out for each other no matter what."

The only surviving son of Moon Shadow and Dewy Leaf. He longs to follow his father's footsteps and venture into the world, but he is confined to the cave. However, he eventually decides to set off on his own. He eventually becomes ShadowClan's first deputy

  • Alliterative Name: Sun Shadow.

  • Dead Guy Junior: Also named after his father, Moon Shadow, who is dead.
  • Family Theme Naming: Sun Shadow, his father Moon Shadow, and his aunt Tall Shadow.
  • Generation Xerox: Many cats remark that he is extremely similar to his father, Moon Shadow.
  • Number Two: He's ShadowClan's very first deputy.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction when he gets attacked by a hawk, as he wonders if Half Moon's prophecy that he would be gone soon meant that he would be taken by the hawk.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: He runs back to try and save Tall Shadow from the dogs, but only gets himself killed. Adding insult to injury, his death doesn't prevent hers, like when Lightning Tail went back for Thunderstar.
  • Sneaky Departure: In The Blazing Star's bonus scene, Sun Shadow and Quiet Rain leave the Tribe in the dead of night.
  • Sole Survivor: The only kit out of his litter to survive. His sister Crow Muzzle and his brother Dancing Leaf both died.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": His name was originally Raven, a bird.
  • The Apprentice: According to Tall Shadow, he and Juniper were this to Jagged Peak and Holly upon joining her group, trying to learn their ways.
  • Happily Married: With Juniper Branch.
  • The Leader: Becomes leader of ShadowClan after Shadowstar.
  • Meaningful Rename: Originally called Raven, but after joining ShadowClan has them change his name to Raven Pelt. Since he's deputy at the time of Shadowstar's final death and she asks him to lead the Clan when she dies, he takes the name Ravenstar shortly after this to symbolize his leadership.
  • Number Two: Becomes deputy after Sun Shadow is killed by dogs.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted in a sense. His name was Raven before joining the Clans. One of Darktail's rogues in the sixth series is also named Raven.
  • You Are in Command Now: When Shadowstar dies, she goes to StarClan knowing Raven Pelt will take care of ShadowClan. As deputy when Shadowstar has no kin in the Clan, he beomes the next leader.

  • Happily Married: With Raven Pelt.
  • Leader Wannabe: She competes with Mouse Ear to become Shadowstar's deputy after Sun Shadow is killed. Though she isn't at all disappointed when her mate, Raven Pelt, is chosen instead believing that if it can't be her, she's glad it's him.

  • Screaming Birth: Her kitting in Moth Flight's Vision as the kits get stuck.

  • The Mentor: To Silver Stripe.
  • No Name Given: His name was not revealed in The First Battle. Subverted when Kate revealed his name online, though.

One of the three new cats who join the Moor Group at the beginning of The Blazing Star, along with Mouse Ear and Mud Paws. She becomes Jagged Peak's mate. Holly and Jagged Peak join Tall Shadow's group in A Forest Divided, but have moved to Wind Runner's group in Moth Flight's Vision.

  • Messy Hair: She has prickly, bushy fur.
  • Official Couple: She and Jagged Peak are canon mates as of The Blazing Star.
  • Violently Protective Mate: She stands up for Jagged Peak when Gray Wing vents his worried anger out on him.

    Spotted Fur

Spotted Fur

A new cat who joined Wind Runner's group shortly before Path of Stars. His mother used to be one of Slate's hunting friends, and when she and his siblings left to go to a new territory, Slate convinced Wind Runner to let him join the group. A talented hunter, with skills rivaling Wind Runner. He's fairly minor in Path of Stars, but it seems like he'll be more important in Moth Flight's Vision.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: Since he's teased as Moth Flight's Love Interest, it seems like his small role in Path of Stars is setup for Moth Flight's Vision. Judging by the preview, he appears to be much more important in that book.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He gets jealous of Moth Flight and Micah's relationship, due to his own crush on Moth Flight.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Although he was jealous of Micah at first, he's happy that Moth Flight had a time of happiness with him.
  • The Mentor: To Black Ear.
  • Ship Tease: With Moth Flight in Path of Stars, who he seems to really care about. He gets pretty excited when Gray Wing gives him a tip about something interesting he could show her.

"Cats are meant to hunt prey, not plants."

A young kit Wind Runner met shortly before meeting Gorse Fur. Wind Runner helped her and her family escape from a fire. Later, Willow was encountered again, having joined Slash's rogues with her brother Frog. After Slash abandoned his rogues, she joined Wind Runner's group and took the name Willow Tail.

  • The Apprentice: Implied to have been this to Minnow when she first joined Wind Runner's group, as she mentioned Willow kept getting lost in the heather.
  • Ascended Extra: She's a minor character in Dawn of the Clans, but she becomes much more important in Moth Flight's Vision, since she's the main villain.
  • Death Equals Redemption: Realizes that she was wrong as she dies. This is enough to redeem her, as she ends up in StarClan and gives Wind Runner a life.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She wanted to get revenge on Red Claw, so she decided to provoke two Clans full of innocent cats into a war.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She first appears in the bonus scene of The First Battle with her mother and brother, as a kit, before returning in the main series as one of Slash's rogues.

  • Karmic Death: She's killed by Clear Sky in a battle started by WindClan, spurred on by Willow Trail's framing of SkyClan.
  • Meaningful Rename: Changed her name to Willow Tail to show that her loyalties now lay with Wind Runner's group.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: As she dies, she learns that Red Claw leading the dogs to Slash's camp was a complete mistake. She's horrified, as it means that her revenge plot was all for nothing.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: What she thinks she's doing. She believes that Red Claw deliberately led the dogs to Slash's camp, so as revenge, she wants to destroy SkyClan. As she's dying, she realizes she was horribly, horribly wrong and just got innocent cats hurt by her grudge.
  • Revenge: The reason behind her villainous actions in Moth Flight's Vision is because she wants to kill Red Claw for causing the death of her friend (and presumably her brother's death as well).
  • Series Continuity Error: Despite her death in Moth Flight's Vision, she is listed in the allegiances of Thunderstar's Echo and Shadowstar's Life.
  • Villain's Dying Grace: As she dies, she realizes that her revenge was absolutely meaningless.
  • Walking Spoiler: You can't have any meaningful discussion of her character without revealing that she's the villain of Moth Flight's Vision.

    Fern Leaf

Fern Leaf/Fern

  • Bit-Part Bad Guys: She's a minor antagonist who has barely screen-time in The Sun Trail.
  • In-Series Nickname: Her name is Night, but Petal refers to her as "Nightheart".
  • Jerkass: She attacks Storm for "invading" the forest, even though she'd lived there her entire life.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In Thunder Rising, it turns out that she's pretty nice when you get to know her. She's also River Ripple's best friend.
  • The Leader: Not yet, but will eventually become the second leader of RiverClan.
  • Meaningful Rename: After becoming the second leader of RiverClan she takes the name Nightstar.
  • The Mentor: She and her brother Mist were unofficially this to Riverstar, teaching him how to fish.
  • Mythology Gag: Possibly. Mist and Night are brother and sister. The Big Bad of the first four Warriors series', Tigerstar, had two littermates named Mistkit and Nightkit.
  • No Name Given: In The Sun Trail, she was never named, although the Bonus Scene revealed that she and a member of the forest group were "Leaf and Nightheart". It wasn't until Thunder Rising that it was revealed that she was Nightheart (as the fandom presumed).
  • Number Two: She becomes RiverClan's deputy under River Ripple's command.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. In Hawkwing's Journey, one of Cora and Shorty's kits is named Night.
  • Out of Focus: Doesn't appear at all in The First Battle, despite appearing in The Sun Trail and Thunder Rising.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Mentions in Riverstar's Home that she had a mate and kits who she outlived.
  • Sibling Team: Works together with her brother Mist in addition to River Ripple.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Appears out of nowhere to yell at Clear Sky and Gray Wing, then disappears just as quickly.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Both she and her brother Mist are black and white.

    Mist

Mist

"A cat who can't swim shouldn't live beside a river."

A black and white tom seen in the company of Night and River Ripple. He's Night's brother, but nothing else was known about him until the release of Riverstar's Home.

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Although he is mentioned by Night in Thunder Rising, he isn't seen or mentioned in The First Battle. Then, in The Blazing Star, A Forest Divided, and Path of Stars, it's repeatedly stated that River Ripple and Night were the only Cats of the River until others started joining after the Great Battle (Dew, Shattered Ice, Dappled Pelt, etc.), so it seems like he either completely vanished, or didn't join the Cats of the River, unlike his sister. Subverted when he appears in their group in Riverstar's Home.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Makes jokes about Silver yowling in her sleep, and claims he should meet Finch Song's kits before Dew because he has been part of RiverClan longer. Also very loyal to the Clan, proud of his apprentice when he becomes a warrior, and worried about his sister when she is injured and about Finch Song's kitting.
  • The Mentor: To Pine Needle, as revealed by Riverstar's Home. Also, he and Night were unofficially this to Riverstar, teaching him how to fish.
  • Mythology Gag: Possibly. Mist and Night are brother and sister. The Big Bad of the first four Warriors series', Tigerstar, had two littermates named Mistkit and Nightkit.
  • No Name Given: His name isn't revealed in Thunder Rising, the only book he's mentioned in, to the point where another unnamed male character seen in the company of River Ripple and Night is assumed to be him (by the reader). Subverted when his name and appearance is revealed in Riverstar's Home.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. One of the cats living on the farm who encounter Crookedkit after he briefly leaves RiverClan is also named Mist.
  • Remember the New Guy?: He's mentioned in the bonus scene of Thunder Rising, though not by name, but never appears in any of the Dawn of the Clans books until Riverstar's Home, where he is shown to have been part of their group the whole time. He is also shown to not be the black cat who attacked Thunder in Thunder Rising, as was previously believed.
  • Sibling Team: Works together with his sister Night in addition to River Ripple.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Both he and his sister Night are black and white.

    Dew

Dew

A former friend of Wind Runner and Gorse Fur. She grew more hostile when the Followers of the Sun Trail arrived in the forest, and in The First Battle, she ended up joining Clear Sky along with her ally Thorn. However, in The Blazing Star, she leaves the Forest Group to join the Cats of the River.

Dew is a gray she-cat, although her description is switched with Thorn's in early Allegiances.

  • Cats Hate Water: Inverted. Joining the Cats of the River seems to imply that Dew loves water.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She was only briefly mentioned by Wind Runner and Gorse Fur in Thunder Rising, as a cat that had become more hostile with the arrival of the Followers of the Sun Trail. In The First Battle, she's much more important. The information she gives to Clear Sky about the Moor Group starts a series of misunderstandings that leads to the Great Battle at the Four Trees.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: She's not mentioned at all in Path of Stars, and it's stated that before the rogues joined, River Ripple, Night, Shattered Ice, and Dappled Pelt were the only Cats of the River. However, she's back in RiverClan in Moth Flight's Vision, with all the characters acting like she was always there since The Blazing Star.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: In Thunder Rising and The First Battle, Thorn and Dew were always together and practically a single character. In The Blazing Star, they start to go their separate ways, with Thorn staying in the Forest Group and Dew joining the Cats of the River.
  • Ear Notch: She has notched ears.
  • The Ghost: She's only ever mentioned in Thunder Rising. Subverted when she appears in The First Battle and plays an important role.
  • The Mentor: To Drizzle, as revealed by Riverstar's Home.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She's a minor character in The First Battle, but the information she gives to Clear Sky sets off a series of misunderstandings that leads to the battle at the Four Trees.
  • Stealth Expert: Apparently, since in The First Battle she was able to sneak into the Moor Group's camp and watch what was going on.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Becomes much more hostile after Clear Sky starts making borders. Thorn and Dew once would have shared a rabbit they had just caught with Wind Runner and Gorse Fur, but now they just opt to chase them off on sight.
  • We Used to Be Friends: She used to be a friend of Wind Runner and Gorse Fur, but now spies on them and treats them like prey stealers.

    Shattered Ice

Shattered Ice

"We're going off into the unknown, into danger to make a better home for you and the other cats who stay here. You don't have to do anything!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7165.jpeg

A creative, intelligent, and rather rude tom who follows the Sun Trail. After seeing Rainswept Flower fall into a hole in the moor, he gets the idea for tunneling, which becomes a cherished skill in WindClan for many years.

  • Dishing Out Dirt: He invents tunneling, and is constantly patrolling and expanding the tunnels.
  • Famed In-Story: In Tallstar's Revenge he's mentioned as one of the first two tunnelers in WindClan.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: Although not villainous by any means, he wasn't really a hero. He just happened to be at the right place at the right time to have the "Eureka!" Moment that caused him to invent tunneling. However, by the time of Tallstar's Revenge, WindClan tells the story of how he invented tunneling as though he was a super awesome hero who braved a deadly blizzard to single-handedly save his starving Clan by inventing tunneling. It's rather amusing, actually.
  • Jerkass: He's rude and has a very short temper. He also eschews diplomacy in favour of calling other cats dungfaces.
  • Out of Focus: In A Forest Divided, because he joins the rarely seen Cats of the River, he appears much less than in the other four books.
  • The Rival: Subverted. He has all the traits of a typical Warriors rival, being bossy, disrespectful, and somewhat ambitious. However, rather than challenging Gray Wing, he completely supports him and puts all his trust in him. Of course, he still causes problems for Gray Wing in Thunder Rising, by pushing for Gray Wing to take over the Moor Group from Tall Shadow, which neither of those two wants to happen.
  • The Smart Guy: He's fairly intelligent, coming up with things such as the Thunderpath crossing groups and tunneling.
  • Those Two Guys: With Jackdaw's Cry. They are rarely seen outside of each other's company, both share an interest in tunneling, and share similar opinions.

    Dappled Pelt

Dappled Pelt

"Lying around while others hunt for us? I don't like the sound of that."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0ecc493c524e2835f1549bacbad0420a.jpg

A she-cat who is good with herbs. She cares for wounded cats, and also loves water. She can be somewhat reckless, but she's very brave and cares deeply for her Clanmates.

Dappled Pelt will go on to be the first medicine cat of RiverClan.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis:
    • Figured out how to catch fish after watching them many times.
    • She also got the idea to bind Jagged Peak's leg with sticks after watching Stoneteller do the same to Sharp Hail.
  • Cabin Fever: When she spends a half-moon with the Forest Group in The Sun Trail, she's confined to a tiny cave. After she gets back, she's very frustrated.
  • Cats Hate Water: Inverted. Dappled Pelt loves water and teaches herself to swim after the Followers of the Sun Trail reach the forest.
  • Meaningful Rename: At some point she will change her name to Dapplepelt to show that she's part of a Clan.
  • The Medic: She's good with herbs, and uses her knowledge of them to help the Followers of the Sun Trail. Word of God also confirms that she is Dapplepelt, RiverClan's first medicine cat.
  • The Mentor: Along with Cloud Spots, she teaches Pebble Heart about herbs.
  • Out of Focus: In A Forest Divided, she barely appears, due to joining the rarely seen Cats of the River.
  • Save the Villain: In The First Battle, she protects her enemy Leaf during the Great Battle and gives him medical assistance, rather than letting him die.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: With Cloud Spots. She's rather reckless, doing things like jumping in the river without knowing how to swim, while he's apathetic about nearly everything except herbs.
  • The Smart Guy: Due to her knowledge of herbs, she's one of the smarter cats around. She also gives the Followers of the Sun Trail some much needed direction at points in their journey.

    Dawn Mist

Dawn Mist/Dawn

"I want to change my name so that I sound more like a forest cat."

A former rogue who joins RiverClan with her mate and kits.

  • Defector from Decadence: Temporarily. During Riverstar's Home, she, her mate and their son leave RiverClan while Riverstar is away dealing with Slash, due to SkyClan hunting on their territory. Fortunately, after Riverstar comes back, he persuades them to return.
  • Good Parents: To Pine Needle and Drizzle. She worries about their safety when they are part of Slash's group.
  • Happily Married: To Moss Tail.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Like her mate, refuses to return to Slash's group when he asks them to.
  • Meaningful Rename: After joining RiverClan, she changes her name from Dawn to Dawn Mist.
  • The Mentor: To Trout Fur, during the events of Riverstar's Home.
  • Tuckerization: She was named after the fan Dawnmist, from Kate's Blog.

    Moss Tail

Moss Tail/Moss

"I will never share a camp with you again."

A former rogue who joins RiverClan with his mate and kits.

  • Defector from Decadence: Temporarily. During Riverstar's Home, he, his mate and their son leave RiverClan while Riverstar is away dealing with Slash, due to SkyClan hunting on their territory. Fortunately, after Riverstar comes back, he persuades them to return.
  • Good Parents: To his kits, Drizzle and Pine Needle. It's implied part of the reason he and his mate joined Slash and stay with him is to keep them safe.
  • Happily Married: To Dawn Mist.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Was never really evil, but after joining RiverClan, when Slash asks him to return, he refuses, using his above quote.
  • Meaningful Rename: After joining RiverClan, he changes his name from Moss to Moss Tail.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. His original name, Moss, is also the name of a cat encountered by Graystripe and Millie in Warrior's Refuge.
  • The Mentor: To Willow Stream, during the events of Riverstar's Home.

    Drizzle

Drizzle

"Do I have to change my name? I like being Drizzle."

A former rogue who joins RiverClan with her parents and littermate.

  • The Apprentice: To Dew, as revealed by Riverstar's Home.
  • Ascended Extra: A minor character in Path of Stars and Moth Flight's Vision, but more important in Riverstar's Home.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Along with her brother; they are the only kits in Slash's group.
  • Cultural Rebel: Joins RiverClan wholeheartedly, but keeps her rogue name. No one has a problem with it.
  • Meaningful Rename: Subverted. Her above quote shows that she likes her old name despite committing to joining RiverClan and asks to keep it even though her family is changing their names.
  • The Mentor: Riverstar's Home reveals she became this to Spider Paw.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Has this with Pine Needle in Moth Flight's Vision.
  • Tagalong Kid: In Riverstar's Home she goes with Riverstar and Arc to help the Cats of the Park, and returns with Riverstar and Finch.

    Pine Needle

Pine Needle/Pine

"You did really well. You didn't sink like last time."

A former rogue who joins RiverClan with his parents and littermate.

  • The Apprentice: To Mist, as revealed by Riverstar's Home.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Along with his sister; they are the only kits in Slash's group.
  • Defector from Decadence: Temporarily. During Riverstar's Home, he and his parents leave RiverClan while Riverstar is away dealing with Slash, due to SkyClan hunting on their territory. Fortunately, after Riverstar comes back, he persuades them to return.
  • Meaningful Rename: After joining RiverClan he changes his name from Pine to Pine Needle.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. His original name, Pine, is both taken by Pinestar after he becomes a kittypet and the name of a cat who is saved by Sasha in her manga trilogy.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Has this with Drizzle in Moth Flight's Vision.

    Spider Paw

Spider Paw

"You can be on my team. We'll beat them easily."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spider_paw.png

One of the kits of Moth Flight and Micah. He was born with an extra toe, which he was named for.

    Hollow

Hollow

"It's not just the prey. We have to show them we can't be bullied."

A black loner who joins River Ripple's camp while it's being formed, who stays when it becomes RiverClan.

  • Blood Knight: Possibly. He attacks Thunder at one point. After being fended off, his quote shows he wants to fight back after SkyClan stops them trespassing.
  • The Cameo: He attacks Thunder in Thunder Rising, but isn't named, causing people to assume until the release of Riverstar's Home that this character was Night's brother, who was also unnamed before the release of Riverstar's Home.
  • Jerkass: Possibly. He makes an unprovoked attack on Thunder in Thunder Rising.
  • Remember the New Guy?: First named in Riverstar's Home, but has seemingly been around the whole time. He actually did appear as an unnamed character in Thunder Rising, but was assumed to be Mist, Night's then-unnamed brother.

    Croak

Croak

"It's not my food or your food. It's our food. What we catch belongs to you and what you catch belongs to us. We share."

A tortoiseshell loner who joins River Ripple's camp while it's being formed, who stays when it becomes RiverClan.

  • The Mentor: To Snow Tail, during the events of Riverstar's Home.
  • Remember the New Guy?: First appears in Riverstar's Home, but has seemingly been around the whole time.

"I wanted my kits to have a safe home. I thought maybe you'd take us in."

A loner who joins River Ripple's camp while pregnant, so her kits can have a better life.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": Before she changes her name, it's Kite, a bird.
  • Mama Bear: Joins what will eventually become RiverClan for the sake of her kits.
  • Maternity Crisis: While giving birth, one of her kits gets stuck, though both she and the kit survive.
  • Meaningful Rename: Changes her name from Kite to Kite Wing after Slash's former rogues change their names.

    Snow Tail

Snow Tail

One of Kite Wing's kits, a tom.

  • The Apprentice: To Croak, during the events of Riverstar's Home.
  • Shrinking Violet: Riverstar notes that he is apparently not confident. He's also nervous about going to his first Gathering.

    Finch

Finch Song/Finch

"I realized I didn't want our kits to grow up without knowing you. And I didn't want to live without you."

A former Cat of the Park, and Riverstar's mate.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Calls StarClan "StarryClan" at one point due to still learning about the Clans.
  • Accidental Murder: Probably. When trying to save her father, she knocks Slash into a river where he presumably drowns.
  • All There in the Manual: Riverstar promises to give her a Clan name after their kits are weaned, but it isn't shown in Riverstar's Home. The Warriors website reveals that her new name is Finch Song.
  • A Dog Named "Cat": Named Finch, a type of bird.
  • Family Theme Naming: She and her father, Owl, are both named after birds.
  • Defector from Decadence: Leaves the Cats of the Park to join Riverstar, as she is pregnant with his kits.
  • Meaningful Rename: After joining RiverClan, she changes her name to Finch Song.
  • "Near and Dear" Baby Naming: Names at least one of her kits this way. Her son, Arc Shadow, is named after her friend Arc. Another one of her kits, Ripple Shine, is most likely named after Ripple, the name her mate Riverstar had while he was still living in the park, though this is not explicitly stated.
  • Second Love: She and Riverstar are this to each other. She had a mate and kits before him, he was in love with one of the other Cats of the Park before founding RiverClan.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She's a black cat, like her son Arc Shadow.

    Arc Shadow

Arc Shadow

One of Riverstar and Finch's sons.

    Ripple Shine

Ripple Shine

Riverstar and Finch's daughter.

  • Named After Somebody Famous: Not explicitly stated, but most likely named for Ripple, Riverstar's former name. Supported by the fact that Finch did promise, while assuming she'd stay at the park, to name one of the kits after their father.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She's silver, like her father.

    Dusk Smoke

Dusk Smoke

One of Riverstar and Finch's sons.

  • The Ghost: Never seen, only mentioned in a conversation between Moth Flight and Drizzle.
  • Tuckerization: Named after Flowerstream, a moderator of BlogClan

Spirit Cats

    Rainswept Flower

Rainswept Flower

"What if we've found our new home?"

Shaded Moss's daughter. She follows her father's lead by joining him on the quest to find what lies at the end of the Sun Trail. According to Stoneteller, she is an excellent tracker.

  • Blood from the Mouth: At her death in The First Battle.
  • Break the Cutie: After her father Shaded Moss dies, she has nightmares and cries out his name in her sleep.
  • Nightmare Dreams: After Shaded Moss dies, she has nightmares where she cries out his name in her sleep.
  • Romantic False Lead: For Jagged Peak. Thunder Rising and The First Battle seem to be setting them up as a couple, but then Clear Sky kills her in the battle.
  • Ship Tease: She spends an awful lot of time with Jagged Peak in Thunder Rising, and when she's not with him, she's usually either thinking about him or talking about him.

    Jackdaw's Cry

Jackdaw's Cry

"You mean we could chase the rabbits all the way to their nests?"

A young tom seeking a new future beyond the Sun Trail. He's also the brother of Falling Feather. Along with Shattered Ice, he is one of the inventors of tunneling. As well, he is the mate of Hawk Swoop and the father of her kits, Lightning Tail and Acorn Fur.

  • Cain and Abel: In The First Battle, he and his sister Falling Feather end up fighting and killing each other.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He, along with Shattered Ice, is one of the first practitioners of WindClan's tunneling skill.
  • Famed In-Story: Remembered in Tallstar's Revenge as being one of the cats who created WindClan's tunneling tradition.
  • Happily Married: Gets together with Hawk Swoop at the end of The Sun Trail.
  • Mutual Kill: In The First Battle, he and his sister Falling Feather fight and end up killing each other.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Much in the same way that the assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the last push that caused World War I to happen, Jackdaw's Cry ends up causing the Great Battle at the Four Trees by catching some food for himself after being starved for two days.
  • Tagalong Kid: He is one of the youngest members of the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Those Two Guys: With Shattered Ice. They are rarely seen outside of each other's company, both share an interest in tunneling, and share similar opinions.
  • Theme Twin Naming: He and his sister both have bird-related names.
  • Together in Death: Dies in the Great Battle, but his mate Hawk Swoop does as well, so they can be together in the afterlife.

    Hawk Swoop

Hawk Swoop

"Come, little one. I'll look after [you]."

A young, caring she-cat who joins the Followers of the Sun Trail.

  • Big Damn Heroes: When Gray Wing is about to fight Gorse and Wind, Hawk Swoop and Tall Shadow show up to prevent the fight and make sure no cat gets hurt.
  • Deer in the Headlights: In The Sun Trail, she freezes up with fear when a car comes towards her. Luckily, Shattered Ice manages to save her from being hit.
  • Good Parents: In a contrast to Clear Sky, she is a kind mother who treats her kits well, including her adopted kit Thunder.
  • Happily Married: Gets together with Jackdaw's Cry at the end of The Sun Trail.
  • Parental Substitute: At the end of The Sun Trail, she agrees to become Thunder's foster mother.
  • Tagalong Kid: She is one of the youngest members of the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Together in Death: Dies in the Great Battle, but her mate Jackdaw's Cry does as well, so they can be together in the afterlife.

    Moon Shadow

Moon Shadow

"Did you see how I frightened off that eagle yesterday? It would have carried off Jackdaw's Cry if I hadn't been there."

Moon Shadow is everything his sister Tall Shadow isn't. He runs from responsibilities and doesn't think the consequences of his actions through. Although he claims that he's following the Sun Trail because he wants his kits at the Tribe to have more food, he's really just looking for freedom. He leaves the moor with Clear Sky to live in the forest

  • Big Eater: He eats a ton. When the Followers of the Sun Trail are sharing Dappled Pelt's fish, Gray Wing notices him hanging around hoping for seconds.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: He leaves the Followers of the Sun Trail along with Quick Water, Falling Feather, Jagged Peak, and Clear Sky to form a new group.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets beat up by forest cats, constantly yelled at by Dewy Leaf, and everyone else calls him an idiot.
  • Disappeared Dad: For his son, Sun Shadow. He left the cave before Sun Shadow was born, and they'll never meet because Moon Shadow is dead. However, they do meet in StarClan after Sun Shadow's death in Shadowstar's Life.
  • Expy: He's like a mix between Berrynose and Crowfeather.
  • Family Theme Naming: Moon Shadow, his sister Tall Shadow, and his son Sun Shadow.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is constantly picking fights with unfamiliar cats. His Tribemates call him an idiot for it.
  • Man on Fire: In Thunder Rising, he dies from injury sustained in a forest fire. The book describes it as his stomach being literally on fire which could not be put out in time to save him.
  • Parental Neglect: He is essentially running away from his kits. It's Played for Laughs, due to how everyone else treats him.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Tall Shadow, who is quiet and worth listening to, while Moon Shadow is annoying and boastful. Gray Wing wonders how one litter can produce such different cats.
  • Series Continuity Error: Dies in Thunder Rising, but is listed in the allegiances of The First Battle.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He's reckless, brash, and always getting into fights. Meanwhile, his sister Tall Shadow is quiet, intelligent, and a natural leader.

    Falling Feather

Falling Feather

"I only did what any cat would have done."

A young, laid-back she-cat who follows the Sun Trail. She is Jackdaw's Cry's sister.

  • Alliterative Name: Falling Feather.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: She leaves the Followers of the Sun Trail, along with Moon Shadow, Clear Sky, Jagged Peak, and Quick Water, to form a new group.
  • Cain and Abel: In The First Battle, she and her brother end up fighting and killing each other.
  • Cats Hate Water: Inverted. Falling Feather loves water and has a passion for swimming.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Jumping into the river to save Quick Water gives us a perfect picture of her character. She loves water, and wouldn't hesitate to risk her life for a friend in need.
  • Fisticuff-Provoking Comment: In The First Battle, Clear Sky and Falling Feather are arguing at the start of the book. Clear Sky insists that he does what he does for The Needs of the Many, and after arguing that there's plenty of prey to share, Falling Feather calls him greedy. This makes Clear Sky furious enough to claw her across the muzzle.
  • Mutual Kill: In The First Battle, she and her brother Jackdaw's Cry fight and end up killing each other.
  • Red Herring: Her swimming skills hint that she will become a member of RiverClan. However, her death in The First Battle means that she will never become one.
  • Tagalong Kid: She is one of the youngest members of the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Theme Twin Naming: She and her brother both have bird-related names.

    Bright Stream

Bright Stream

"I love living in the mountains. In spite of the cold and hunger. I always imagined I'd raise my kits here...but then, I always imagined their father would be Clear Sky."

Clear Sky's mate. She joins him on the quest because she wants to be with him, and because she believes that a good home for their future kits lies at the end of the Sun Trail. However, she is carried off by an eagle and killed early on into the journey, with drastic consequences for the Followers of the Sun Trail.

  • Betty and Veronica: She's incredibly sweet and loyal to Clear Sky, making her the Betty and Clear Sky's other mate, the blunt and sarcastic Storm, the Veronica.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: She is snatched by an eagle while trying to save Gray Wing. To make matter worse, she was pregnant with Clear Sky's kits.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Her death was the first step towards Clear Sky's Face–Heel Turn.
  • A Day in the Limelight: An extra scene has been released online which shows her point of view. Unfortunately for her, said scene is her death.
  • A Death in the Limelight: Her story titled The Death of Bright Stream.
  • Disposable Woman: Basically only functions as a reason for Clear Sky to start becoming a jerk.
  • The Ditherer: Just like Gray Wing, she worries about leaving the mountains. However, she makes up her mind far quicker because of her love of Clear Sky.
  • Expy: Of Spottedleaf. She is made of purity, is Clear Sky's love interest, and tragically dies in the first book.
  • First Love: For Clear Sky, who eventually gets together with Storm after her death.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her death is the catalyst for her mate Clear Sky's fall.
  • Never Found the Body: She was carried off by eagles, but none of the cats ever get confirmation of her death until The First Battle, when she appears as a ghost with the rest of the StarClan cats.
  • Nice Girl: She is calm, kind, and compassionate.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Her death at the talons of an eagle is the start of Clear Sky's fall to the Dark Side, and the cause of the main conflict in the first half of Dawn of the Clans.
  • Pregnant Badass: Even though she's carrying kits, she still fights and helps the other cats. This ends up backfiring massively when she dies and starts Clear Sky's downward spiral.
  • Undying Loyalty: Is willing to leave the only home she's ever known to follow her mate, Clear Sky.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: In The Sun Trail, she pretends to limp to attract some of the eagles toward her.

    Shaded Moss

Shaded Moss

"This has been my home all my life. I always expected to die here. But if Stoneteller believes that some of us must leave to find the place of her dream, then I will go, and do my best to keep you safe."

A somewhat older member of the Tribe. Most of the Tribe expected Half Moon to name Shaded Moss as her successor to the mantle of Stoneteller. However, they were shocked when she instead named him the leader of the Followers of the Sun Trail, a group of cats who would seek out a new home, while also reducing the amount of mouths the Tribe has to feed. Although he expected to live with the Tribe until the end of his days, Shaded Moss is honoured to lead the crew. He's also Rainswept Flower's loving father.

  • Blood from the Mouth: After being hit by a car.
  • Doomed by Canon: He's the leader of the Followers of the Sun Trail, but since we never heard about him as one of the major leaders of the forest cats who formed the Clans, something has to happen to him before the Clans are made. That something turns out to be his death when he is hit by a car.
  • The Leader: Half Moon names him that leader of the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Look Both Ways: He is killed when a car hits him while he is trying to escape from a dog.
  • Meaningful Funeral: The Followers of the Sun Trail hold one when he dies.
  • Mr. Exposition: Whenever something about the outside world needs to be explained to the Followers of the Sun Trail, he's usually the one to do it.
  • Team Dad: He acts fatherly and supportive towards the other Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: At the end of The First Battle, he returns as a spirit and chews out Tall Shadow.
Shaded Moss: "All cats have a choice. A cat who follows only one path, never stopping to question where it leads, is as dumb as the prey she hunts."

    Storm

Storm

"I'll see you next time you need rescuing."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c55094183d4ec98ba2f2af7f55a6dd81.jpg

A silver she-cat who has lived in the forest all her life. She is sarcastic and blunt, but she won't hesitate to help cats in need.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: She gets together with the antagonistic Clear Sky.
  • Almost Dead Guy: As she dies, she asks Gray Wing to apologize to Clear Sky for her.
  • Betty and Veronica: She is blunt and sarcastic, making her the Veronica to the loyal and supportive Turtle Tail, who is also a love interest for Gray Wing. And these same traits also make her Clear Sky's Veronica, with his incredibly sweet mate Bright Stream as the Betty.
  • Embarrassing Rescue: In The Sun Trail, Gray Wing helps chase away some cats that are harassing Storm. Storm pretends that she didn't need the help.
  • Family Theme Naming: All three of her kits have names related to storms, like her. Though Thunder's name was given to him by Turtle Tail and Gray Wing, leaving it unknown what it was originally.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Instead of fleeing, she gives her life to protect her kits.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She acts rude towards Gray Wing at first, but she helps him out even though she has nothing to gain from it.
  • The Lost Lenore: Clear Sky loved her as much as he loved Bright Stream, but he also loses her when she dies.
  • Love at First Sight: She and Clear Sky have an incredibly awkward moment where they fall in love when they first meet. They get together a few days later.
  • Love Triangle: She loves Clear Sky, but Gray Wing loves her.
  • Mama Bear: Dies protecting her kits from harm.
  • Meet Cute: When Gray Wing takes her to meet Clear Sky, they have an incredibly awkward exchange due to how smitten they are. They later get together.
  • The Nicknamer: Calls Gray Wing "Gray Whatsit". This is actually the name Rusty gave to Graypaw in Into the Wild, so it doubles as a Mythology Gag.
  • Oblivious to Love: She doesn't notice how much Gray Wing loves her.
  • Rescue Romance: Gray Wing thought that they were going to get together after they each saved each other. However, it's subverted as she has Clear Sky's kits.
  • The Runaway: Leaves Clear Sky's camp after she grows sick of his behaviour.
  • Second Love: For Clear Sky, who eventually gets together with her after losing his mate Bright Stream.
  • Talking in Your Dreams: In Thunder Rising, she appears in Thunder's dreams to talk to her son and tell him that she hopes that he will make things right with Clear Sky.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just like her mate. She is Clear Sky's second mate, gives birth to Thunder, and dies. All of these things are major plot twists that come late in The Sun Trail.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: At the end of The First Battle, she returns as a spirit to further hammer in to Clear Sky's head how badly he screwed up.

    Frost

Frost

"Well, that's a good excuse. I think you've come to steal our prey."

A cat who wants the forest all to himself. He later joins up with the forest group.

  • Agony of the Feet: In Thunder Rising, his paw is injured in a fire, and with no cats with healing knowledge in the forest group, it refuses to heal on its own and becomes infected. Clear Sky kicks him out because an injury weakens the group.
  • The Exile: At the end of Thunder Rising, Clear Sky kicks him out of the forest because of his injury. Frost was supposed to be left for dead, but Thunder goes with him and takes him to the moor group.
  • It's All About Me: He wants Storm out of the forest so that he can have more food for himself.
  • Jerkass: He is very rude to Gray Wing when he wants to visit Clear Sky. He also attacks Storm for "invading" the forest, even though she's lived there for her entire life. However, he tones it down a bit after Thunder takes him to the Moor Group.
  • Revenge: In The First Battle, he joins in the Great Battle partially to help the Moor Group and partially to get revenge on Clear Sky for kicking him out.
  • The Skeptic: He thinks that Gray Wing is lying about wanting to see his own brother, Clear Sky, and is actually trying to steal prey. He also attacks Storm, thinking her to be a trespasser instead of a resident of the forest.
  • Slashed Throat: Snake kills him this way.
  • Villain Team-Up: Teams up with fellow antagonists Fox, Petal, Leaf, and Clear Sky when he joins the forest group.

    Fox

Fox

"Petal and I share everything."

When he was just a kit, Fox lost his mother to a badger. He and his sister Petal decided that they could only rely on each other. However, his beliefs started to change when he met the forest group, which is led by Clear Sky. He joined because of his love for Falling Feather. However, he was killed in a border dispute with Gray Wing before anything developed.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": He's a cat, and his name is Fox.
  • The Bully: He's a complete jerk to the cats outside the forest group, and he picks on them. It's pretty sad, because his sister hates bullies.
  • The Dragon: He serves as an enforcer to the leader of the forest group, Clear Sky, always hanging around him and controlling who goes through the borders.
  • Sibling Team: He and his sister Petal rely on each other, hunting and fighting together.
  • Slashed Throat: Gray Wing accidentally cuts his throat open, killing him.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Is quite kind and sweet in The Sun Trail's Bonus Scene, but acts cold and is rude towards Gray Wing.
  • Villain Team-Up: He and his sister team up with fellow antagonists Leaf, Frost, and Clear Sky when they join the forest group.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He dies after having few appearances and not doing much of note. The bonus scene of The Sun Trail helps alleviate this by giving him a more clear-cut personality.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: In The Sun Trail's Bonus Scene, he tells Petal that she's a lot better than she gives herself credit for.

    Fircone

Fircone

"We're worried about where this is heading. Soon Clear Sky won't listen to what anyone has to say, and we won't have any choice about what he asks us to do."

A tom that joins Clear Sky's group with his best friend Nettle late in Thunder Rising. He needs a place to stay, but is disgusted by Clear Sky's deplorable actions. However, as he spends more time in the camp, he begins to support Clear Sky more, and starts to hunger for battle.

  • Fallen Hero: In The First Battle, Thunder says that he used to be a good cat, but now he's just become another unquestioning minion of Clear Sky.
  • Last Episode, New Character: He doesn't show up until the final chapter of Thunder Rising, but he is the cause of the climax because he convinces Thunder to confront Clear Sky.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Played with. He's willing to follow through on any awful order Clear Sky may give him, but he feels horrible about it and wants Clear Sky to change his ways.
  • Those Two Guys: Always seen in the company of Nettle in Thunder Rising and The First Battle.

    Emberkit

Emberkit

One of Wind Runner and Gorse Fur's four kits born in The First Battle. He tragically dies shortly after being born.

    Morning Whisker

Morning Whisker

One of Wind Runner and Gorse Fur's daughters, born in The First Battle. She is a brown tabby and white she-cat with a white muzzle.

  • Blood from the Mouth: In The Blazing Star, this is one of her symptoms when she is ill.
  • Death of a Child: She dies of sickness in The Blazing Star.
  • No Name Given: Her name wasn't revealed in The First Battle. Subverted when Kate revealed her name online.
  • Series Continuity Error: Was accidentally referred to as a tom in The First Battle, which claimed that Wind Runner had "three sons and a daughter" when she in fact had two sons and two daughters.

    Pale Sky and Tiger Tail

Pale Sky and Tiger Tail

Bright Stream and Clear Sky's kits. Bright Stream is pregnant with them at the time of her death.

Kittypets

    Bumble

Bumble

"I'm a housecat-though I guess you'd call me a kittypet. Can I come up?"

A curious kittypet who explores the forest whenever she gets bored of hanging out with her Housefolk. She becomes friends with Turtle Tail.

  • Almost Dead Guy: Before she dies, she talks with Turtle Tail for a few moments and apologizes to her.
  • Break the Cutie: In Thunder Rising she tells her best friend a hard truth, so her friend abandons her. Then her friend's ex starts abusing her, so she feels she must leave her housefolk. But the moor cats reject her and she ends up barely surviving in the forest, slowly starving to death. Then she either gets killed by a fox or by Clear Sky. She goes from kind and fun to broken and alone.
  • Broken Bird: Becomes this in Thunder Rising. She tries to become badass and survive on her own after Turtle Tail leaves, Tom abuses her, and the moor cats reject her, but it doesn't work, and she dies.
  • Cultural Rebel: Unlike most kittypets in the series, she adores the forest and isn't too frightened of the cats that live there.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Turtle Tail. They are very good friends, and Turtle Tail eventually moves in with her, but there's nothing romantic between them.
  • A Pet into the Wild: She tries to become this in Thunder Rising, but it doesn't work out and instead she ends up dying.

    Tom

Tom

"I don't think they're be enough combs in the world to scrape the fleas from her."

A kittypet who was abandoned by his Twolegs. He was taken to an animal shelter for a while, but was eventually adopted by Bumble's Twolegs. Fathered Turtle Tail's kits, but didn't tell her that the Twolegs would take them away when they were born. Finding this out caused Turtle Tail to go back to the moor. His anger over this caused him to reveal his true colours, and he began beating Bumble, forcing her out into the wild as well. In The First Battle, he shows up on the moor and steals Turtle Tail's kits, but they're rescued by Lightning Tail and Thunder. He returns in The Blazing Star, bringing with him One Eye, a deadly rogue from the swamp.

  • A Dog Named "Dog": Lampshaded by Gray Wing, who is surprised that twolegs would name a tom "Tom", and considers it further proof that all twolegs are crazy. This also trips up Thunder in The First Battle, because when Tom tells him his name, he thinks Tom is saying that he is a tom.
  • Asshole Victim: He's a cruel, abusive, and possessive bully who is eventually killed by One Eye. Absolutely no one is sad about it, save his kits, and even they move on pretty quickly.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Acts nice to Turtle Tail at first, but he lied to her and manipulated her, and later begins abusing Bumble. He also tries to act politely to Thunder, but Thunder realizes who he is and doesn't fall for it.
  • The Bully: He cruelly beats Bumble, in addition to lying to and manipulating Turtle Tail.
  • Dies Wide Open: After attacking One Eye to protect his kit in The Blazing Star.
  • Domestic Abuse: In Thunder Rising, he starts beating Bumble after Turtle Tail leaves to go back to the moor group.
  • Fat Bastard: Clear Sky describes him as very plump. He's also a complete and total asshole.
  • The Ghost: He's mentioned several times, and is fairly important as the father of Turtle Tail's kits, but he never appears in Thunder Rising. However, he does show up eventually in The First Battle.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: In The First Battle, he gets absolutely furious when he thinks that his twolegs might like Lightning Tail more than him.
  • A Pet into the Wild: In The Blazing Star, he decides to live in the forest.
  • Pet the Dog: Subverted. In The Blazing Star he dies trying to save his daughter from One Eye, but Word of God is it was actually because he saw her as a possession and thus it was unacceptable for One Eye to hurt her.
  • Redemption Equals Death: In The Blazing Star, he finally does something for someone other than himself by saving Sparrow Fur, but is killed in the process by One Eye. However, he wasn't actually redeeming himself, and just saw Sparrow Fur as a possession of his that One Eye was damaging.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In The Blazing Star, despite being an asshole, he probably never intended for all the death that came from him bringing One Eye to Clear Sky.

    Flower

Flower

"If Tom knew I brought you here, he'd be very angry. Good luck!"

A timid she-cat that's friends with River Ripple. Although shy, she is also quite nosy. Nothing happens in the Twolegplace without Flower knowing about it.

  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. A former kittypet who joins a group of loners who are manipulated by Sol in Power of Three is also named Flower. It is also the name of Sharpclaw's sister, mentioned in the Warriors app and on the Warriors website family tree.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's very timid, so much that River Ripple makes Thunder and Lightning Tail hide from her lest they spook her.
  • Spear Carrier: River Ripple takes Thunder and Lightning Tail to her to get information.

    Cleo

Cleo

"I didn't think about how I'd find food once we left. I just wanted to make sure my kits were safe."

A kittypet who joins River Ripple's group briefly after her kits are born, to protect them.

  • From Stray to Pet: Is persuaded to return to her Twolegs by her mate.
  • Happily Married: To Casper, though she seems to care more about their kits than him.
  • Mama Bear: Leaves her home so the Twolegs won't take her kits away.
  • Not What It Looks Like: When Night teaches her to swim, Casper attacks and injures her, thinking she's trying to drown his mate. Cleo has to pull him off and explain what's going on.
  • A Pet into the Wild: Along with her kits, leaves her house for the forest so they can stay together.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She is white with ginger splotches. Her son, Scout, is fully white.

    Casper

Casper

"Having to hunt every day and share my food doesn't sound like freedom to me. The Twolegs give us everything we need, and we don't have to work for it. And it's always warm and dry in the Twoleg den. Can you imagine life here when it's cold?"

Cleo's mate, and the father of her kits.

  • Happily Married: To Cleo, though she seems to care more about their kits than him.
  • Lazy Bum: Possibly, if his quote is any indication, though he does also bring up good points, and was active enough to find his mate and kits.
  • Papa Wolf: Goes out into the forest to find his mate and kits and bring them home, after he realizes the Twolegs will not give the kits away.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He's ginger, like his daughter Hunter.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Boyfriend, actually, but he does attack Night when he thinks she's trying to drown Cleo.

    Hunter and Scout

Hunter and Scout

Cleo and Casper's kits. Hunter is a she-cat, while Scout is a tom.

  • From Stray to Pet: Join River Ripple's group with their mother, but are persuaded to come back to their Twoleg nest by their father.
  • A Pet into the Wild: Leave their Twoleg nest with their mother when she thinks they'll be taken away by the Twolegs.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Hunter is ginger, like their father, while Scout is white, like their mother.
  • Tagalong Kid: They go where their mother goes.

Rogues

    One Eye

One Eye

"I may only have one eye, but I see everything."

An ancient and malevolent cat who lives in the forest. Once Tom tells him about the presence of Clear Sky and his Forest Group, he takes an interest in it and requests to join it. However, while Clear Sky thinks that he just wants to grow stronger, he has far more sinister reasons for wanting to become part of the group.

  • All There in the Manual: According to the Warriors website family tree, One Eye resides in the Dark Forest following his death.
  • Arc Villain: He is the main villain of The Blazing Star. However, he dies in that book, so he won't play the role of the villain any longer. In A Forest Divided, his successor Slash appears and seems to be the true final villain of Dawn of the Clans.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Set up as the new villain after Clear Sky. Then killed at the end of The Blazing Star. Slash, a new character introduced in A Forest Divided, appears to be the true villain.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In The Blazing Star, he tries to kill Sparrow Fur when she asks to see her father. He only fails because Tom saves her, so he kills Tom, then later captures Sparrow Fur and tortures her. As well, when Acorn Fur protects her friends from his rogues, he has them surround her and all brutally beat her, focusing on inflicting head wounds.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In The Blazing Star, the first thing he does is land almost on Clear Sky, then attack his ally Tom, snapping that he can speak for himself.
  • The Exile: Clear Sky exiles him from the forest for killing Tom. He doesn't care, and comes back later to take over the Forest Group and force Clear Sky himself into exile.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Doesn't show a single redeeming trait while he's alive, but his daughter Star Flower is utterly grief-stricken at his death.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: According to Kate, he loved Star Flower as much as he could love any other cat.
  • Evil Old Folks: Incredibly ancient, and very malevolent.
  • It's All About Me: Repeatedly admits to Clear Sky that the only cat he cares about is himself, and advises Clear Sky to only care for himself as well.
  • One-Man Army: Probably the strongest cat in Dawn of the Clans. It took Cloud Spots, Lightning Tail, Thunder, and Gray Wing all fighting together to bring him down.
  • Sadist: He has one of the most frightening sadistic streaks in the series. According to his old enemy, Mouse Ear, One Eye likes to manipulate other cats and cause trouble just for the fun of it. Throughout the book, we quickly learn that Mouse Ear wasn't kidding; One Eye imprisons and tortures Sparrow Fur, permenately scars his followers with his "Mark" (see below), and has his followers brutally beat up Sparrow Fur, and later Clear Sky, all with blood-chilling joy.
  • Pride: He's very arrogant and clearly thinks very highly of himself.
  • The Sociopath: Shows traits of one; he has a complete Lack of Empathy, a selfish, sadistic streak, and is very arrogant and prone to bragging to the point of at least once referring to himself in the third person.
  • Third-Person Person: For a little bit in The Blazing Star, when facing off against Clear Sky.
One Eye: You'll kill me, will you? You'll kill One Eye? If One Eye were that easy to kill, he'd never have survived kithood.
  • World's Strongest Man: In Dawn of the Clans, he's easily the strongest cat any of the characters has ever encountered.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In The Blazing Star, he insists that the kit Sparrow Fur fight him to prove that she can see her father, and he nearly kills her.
  • You Fool!: In The Blazing Star, he calls Clear Sky a fool when Clear Sky claims that he doesn't want to "keep his cats in line".
  • Zorro Mark: He leaves a circle-shaped wound on cats' paw pads, to mark them as his servants.

    Slash

Slash

"When the time comes, I want to see the surprise on their soft, kitty-loving faces for myself."

An elderly ally of One Eye's who wants to finish what One Eye started.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He acts very creepy towards Star Flower and Violet Dawn, neither of whom wants his attention in the slightest.
  • Arc Villain: He is the main villain of A Forest Divided and Path of Stars, the last two books, but isn't even foreshadowed before them.
  • Back for the Dead: In Riverstar's Home, he is shown to have fled the Clans, recruited more rogues and subjugated the cats of the park. When Riverstar comes to stop him, the battle ends with his presumed death falling into a river and drowning.
  • Bad Boss: He treats his rogues like complete dirt. He starves most of them except for his handful of friends, has anyone who expresses displeasure brutally beaten, compares his cats to foxes, abuses Fern and his other spies, and when they get injured by the dogs, he ditches them, deciding that caring for them is too much work.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He wanted Star Flower, but she picked Clear Sky over him. Then in Path of Stars, he tries to get Violet, one of his rogues, to become his mate, and she rejects him as well.
  • Dark Is Evil: Like many other villains, he is a brown tabby.
  • Disney Villain Death: Is pushed into a fast flowing river and doesn't come up again, presumably drowning.
  • Ear Notch: He has torn ears that are nicked at the tip.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He loses because he cannot understand loyalty, and just thinks that all his cats will come back to him when he returns. Also, Clear Sky thinks that he doesn't know what love is.
  • Evil Counterpart: He's what Clear Sky would have been if he had been motivated by greed rather than fear.
  • I Have Your Wife: He kidnaps Star Flower at the end of A Forest Divided.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: A variation. When confronting the cats at Fourtrees, he claims that his cats were free to leave him whenever they wanted. Fern Leaf says he is lying, and says he threatened to hurt her sister Beech if she left. His response is "So. Beech died anyway," which basically admits that she is right.
  • It Amused Me: In Path of Stars, he reveals that he just kidnapped Star Flower because he thought it would be funny to see Clear Sky try to convince the other leaders to help save her, and that his real plan was just to steal the prey out of the paws of the cats from the groups.
  • Karma Houdini: What's his punishment for kidnapping and starving a pregnant Star Flower, abusing his rogues, stealing prey, and attacking the Clans? Nothing—he escapes to live another day.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: In Riverstar's Home, his followers abandon him and he's presumably killed by being pushed off a waterfall into a river where he drowns. This happens after he attempted to subjugate another group of cats, and threatened to kill an elder. His death was a long time coming.
  • Kick the Dog: He outright abuses his ally, Fern. He also kidnaps Star Flower — who is pregnant with Clear Sky's kits — to get Clear Sky and the other leaders to meet him at the Four Trees so they can share their prey with him and his group. In Path of Stars, he also ditches his group when they get injured by the dogs.
  • Lazy Bum: He is perfectly capable of catching prey for himself, but menaces the groups because he doesn't want to, and thinks they should do it for him. As well, in Path of Stars, he decides that helping his rogues recover from the dog attack is too much work, and leaves them.
  • Lecherous Licking: While kidnapping Star Flower, he scratches her on the cheek, then pauses to lap at the blood.
  • The Leader: He leads the rogues with One Eye dead. However, after they get injured by the dogs, he decides that caring for them is too much work, so he leaves.
  • Meaningful Name: He seems to be named for the white slash marking on his legs.
  • Offing the Offspring: In Riverstar's Home, one line implies he may have done this to his own kits.
  • Shame If Something Happened: He staves off Clear Sky while kidnapping Star Flower by remarking that it would be terrible if he was forced to hurt her or her unborn kits.
  • Uncertain Doom: In Riverstar's Home, he's pushed into a fast flowing river, pulled down, and seemingly doesn't come up. Riverstar and the other witnesses believe he is dead, but his body isn't shown.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: With Star Flower. They grew up together and he thought she was going to be his mate, but she was pregnant with Clear Sky's kits by the time he revealed himself to Clear Sky.
  • Villainous Friendship: Seems to have this with Splinter and Beetle, his Co-Dragons, who he gives the best prey to. He also states that he had this with One Eye.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Threatens Star Flower's unborn kits, and it's clear that he means it. A line in Riverstar's Home also implies he killed his own kits.

    Snake

Snake

"Why don't we just leave? These mouse-hearts don't appreciate you, Slash. Let them try to make it on their own!"

A bloodthirsty rogue tom from the Twolegplace who joins Clear Sky so that he can grow even stronger.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": He's a cat, and his name is Snake, a reptile.
  • Blood Knight: Always eager to fight and hungry for battle. Shown most obviously by how much he relishes killing Frost.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Almost certainly as of The Blazing Star. He was just a minor villain in The First Battle. However, after turning on Clear Sky and leaving the Forest Group, it looks like he may become one of the major villains of Dawn of the Clans. Subverted somewhat, in that he eventually returns as one of Slash's rogues, but his history with Clear Sky is barely even mentioned, leaving him as a generic follower with no importance.
  • Co-Dragons: In The First Battle, he and Petal act as Clear Sky's most loyal enforcers, and are very willing to fight for him.
  • Defector from Decadence: In The Blazing Star, once he decides that he can no longer stand Clear Sky, he turns on him and leaves the Forest Group.
  • Meaningful Name: His name being Snake foreshadows his treacherous nature, as he turns on Clear Sky at the end of The Blazing Star.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. He shares his name with Barley's BloodClan brother, who appears in Ravenpaw's Path.
  • Scars Are Forever: In The Blazing Star, he, along with the rest of the Forest Group, is given One Eye's mark, which is cut into his skin. This is one of the reasons he turns on Clear Sky at the end of the book.

    Splinter

Splinter

"I don't know why you bother giving them anything at all."

One of Slash's rogues, and one of his Co-Dragons.

  • Co-Dragons: He and Beetle are this to Slash.
  • Disappeared Dad: According to Kate Cary's blog, he's the father of Milkweed's first litter, Clover, Thistle and Bramble, though he isn't part of their lives.
  • Jerk with the Heart of a Jerk: His quote implies he'd let his campmates starve, seeing them as useless. He also abandons them, along with Slash and a few others, after the dog attack.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is a verb that means to break, which is what he does under Slash.
  • Villainous Friendship: He seems to have this with Slash and Beetle.

    Beetle

Beetle

"Let these vermin die alone."

One of Slash's rogues, and one of his Co-Dragons.

    Swallow

Swallow

"I don't want to live like prey. I'm a hunter."

One of Slash's rogues, who goes with him when he abandons his campmates.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": She's a cat, and her name is Swallow, a bird.
  • Ambition is Evil: Goes with Slash because she wants to be powerful, as shown by her quote.
  • Better Living Through Evil: Her quote shows she could see a future if she joined the other cats instead of Slash, but also wants to be strong, not just alive, so she chooses to follow Slash.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Left behind to guard Black Ear when Slash confronts the Clans and his former rogues at the hollow. When fleeing, she leaves him in the middle of the road, which Clear Sky has to save him from.

    Bee

Bee

"But Slash is gone. What are we going to do now?"

One of Slash's rogues who tries to join WindClan but decides it's not for her.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": She's a cat, and her name is Bee, an insect.
  • The Apprentice: Implied to have been this to Reed when she was part of Wind Runner's group, as he tried to be nice about her unwillingness to help.
  • Lazy Bum: Joins WindClan but doesn't try to contribute, unlike Fern and Willow. Eventually attacks Fern and goes back to rejoin Slash because she doesn't want to work to earn her place.
  • Meaningful Name: She's striped yellow and black, like a bee, her namesake.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. There's a Cat of the Park named Bee in Thunder.
  • Redemption Rejection: Could have joined WindClan and been loyal and respected. Instead chooses the life of a rogue because being honorable is too much work for her.

    Ember

Ember

"Just because I sleep in the same camp doesn't mean I want to change who I am."

One of Slash's rogues who tries to join ThunderClan but doesn't fit in.

  • It's All About Me: When he hunts, he goes alone and often eats what he catches, instead of bringing it back for the Clan. Also states, when offered to become a full member of the Clan, that in Slash's group, their lives were their own. See his quote, which is also quite rude.
  • Jerk with the Heart of a Jerk: Doesn't contribute while he lives with Thunder's group, and sees nothing wrong with this. His quote is the response to Thunder asking if he wants to change his name, as opposed to a simple no, he reprimands Thunder for assuming he may want to.
  • Malicious Misnaming: At one point in Riverstar's Home calls Riverstar "River Dribble".
  • Redemption Rejection: Could have been a warrior of ThunderClan, but didn't want to work for anyone other than himself, so went back to Slash when given the option.

    Beech

Beech

One of Slash's rogues who is also Fern's littermate.

  • Morality Pet: Fern states she only stays with Slash because Beech is a part of his group. Also for Willow Tail, who in Moth Flight's Vision attempts to kill the cat she blames for Beech's death.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Her death, and that of Stone, convinces Slash and a few others to abandon the rest, and the Clans to take the rest in.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She appears only for a short time in Path of Stars and doesn't contribute much to the plot, but her relationships with Fern and Willow drive their actions in Dawn of the Clans and Moth Flight's Vision, respectively.
  • Theme Naming: Beech and her sister Fern are both named after plants.
  • The Voiceless: She is never shown speaking.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Aside from being abused by Slash, we don't get to see her do much.

    Frog

Frog

"You said we could have it."

One of Slash's rogues who is Willow Tail's brother.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": He's a cat, and his name is Frog.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: As a kit, in the bonus scene of The First Battle.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: When Wind and Gorse save him from a burning tree, he questions them at every opportunity and eventually claims he could have escaped himself.
  • Dramatic Spine Injury: During the dog attack, one of the dogs breaks his spine, leaving him unable to walk. Later that night when being brought to join the mountain cats he dies of internal injuries associated with this.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He first appears in the bonus scene of The First Battle with his mother and sister, as a kit, before returning in the main series as one of Slash's rogues.
  • Morality Pet: To Willow Tail, who is very upset when he dies. Though strangely, she doesn't mention him when admitting she instigated the battle with SkyClan in Moth Flight's Vision.

    Stone

Stone

One of Slash's rogues who dies in the dog attack.

  • Ambiguously Evil: Nothing is known about him, leaving his motives for following Slash unclear.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Never mentioned again after he and Beech are buried.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted twice. He shares his name both with one of Cora and Shorty's kits who appear in Hawkwing's Journey, and a tom born to the Sisters who appears in Squirrelflight's Hope.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: His death, and that of Beech, convinces Slash and a few others to abandon the rest, and the Clans to take the rest in.
  • The Voiceless: He is never shown speaking.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Aside from fighting the dogs and dying, we don't see him do anything. While the other victims of the attack are shown to have some personality, at least through their relationships with others, he isn't.

    Rain

  • The Leader: Of his own gang, who attack others for him, including River Ripple.
  • Lean and Mean: He's stated to be skinny, and is an asshole.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. Hawkfrost, one of the major villains in the first four series', before he joined RiverClan, was named Hawk. Also, one of the Sisters in the later Warriors series' is named Hawk as well.
  • Starter Villain: In a sense. He's the first hostile cat River Ripple faces after arriving in his new home.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": His name is Snail.
  • Hero Killer: Kills Riverstar, though he's fine due to having lives to spare.

  • One-Steve Limit: Averted, he shares a name with a cat born into the Sisters who appears in Tree's Roots.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Leaves after Riverstar returns to life, and isn't seen again.

The Tribe

    Stoneteller

Stoneteller (Half Moon)

"All cats in the Tribe are my kits, even the elders. And as for finding a mate, I knew love once and once was enough. We can never be sure of our future, Gray Wing. All we can do is trust that what we believe is right."

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8f4cc1c168216b3700c275591fca018b.jpg

The leader of the Tribe. Many seasons ago, she was led to the mountains by Jay's Wing, a tom she loved. After having a vision of the rising sun, she realizes that a group of cats must travel away from the mountains and find a new home for themselves.

Stoneteller also appears in Power of Three and Omen of the Stars as Half Moon. You can read about that version of her here.

  • Celibate Hero: As the Stoneteller, she can't take a mate. But as she says, "I knew love once, and that was enough."
  • Call-Back: Mentions Jay's Wing (aka Jayfeather) and the time she spent with him. This references Long Shadows and Sign of the Moon.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: In The Sun Trail, she has a dream/vision of another place where there will be food and warmth for some of the Tribe.
  • Foreseeing My Death: In The Blazing Star, she sees that her death is coming in the pool of omens. She dies shortly afterwards.
  • Intro-Only Point of View: The prologue of The Sun Trail is from her perspective, but after that she's just a supporting character with no POV scenes.
  • I Will Find You: Vows to find Jay's Wing again in the afterlife.
  • The Leader: She is the leader of the Tribe.
  • The Medic: Her role as the Stoneteller makes her both a healer and a leader.
  • Mr. Exposition: In The Sun Trail, she spends a long time telling the Followers of the Sun Trail what to expect in the outside world, while also giving the reader information about the Tribe.
  • Older and Wiser: In Long Shadows and Sign of the Moon, Half Moon was still young and inexperienced. Stoneteller is a much wiser and world-weary cat, however.
  • Shipper on Deck: Her happiness when Gray Wing and Turtle Tail become mates shows that she wanted them to get together all along.
  • Talking in Your Dreams: In Thunder Rising, she appears in one of Gray Wing's dreams. She's not sure why it happened, but suggests that it's a greater power showing Gray Wing his destiny as leader by sending him to the Cave of Pointed Stones.

    Silver Frost

Silver Frost

"We may not be as young as you, but our claws are still sharp."

An elder of the Tribe. Despite her own hunger, she remains good-natured and tries to help her Tribemates.

  • Bait-and-Switch: In the prologue of The Sun Trail, she steals a bone from some kits. At first it looks like she's greedy, but it turns out that she was trying to get her friend Misty Water to eat it and survive.
  • Cool Old Lady: She is kind and supportive of every cat in the Tribe.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: She gets her paws on some food, but she gives it to Misty Water because she thinks that she needs it more.
  • Shipper on Deck: She likes Clear Sky being together with Bright Stream, and tries to push Gray Wing to become mates with Turtle Tail.

    Misty Water

Misty Water

"You young cats think you know everything."

An elder, and one of the Tribe's best trackers. She's been miserable and withdrawn ever since her mate Broken Feather died from starvation.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: After Jagged Peak disappears, it's revealed that she's one of the best trackers in the Tribe and she helps Gray Wing figure out where he went.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: In The First Battle, she tries to give her food to Jay Frost, because she thinks that a younger cat needs it more than an old cat.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She acts rude to Gray Wing, but she genuinely wants Jagged Peak to be okay.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: She acts rather rude towards Gray Wing, and claims that young cats are disrespectful.

    Lion's Roar

Lion's Roar (Lionblaze)

"Don't lose faith in what you saw."

An elder of the Tribe. He suggests the possibility of a new home for the younger cats being out there somewhere. He's also Lionblaze, a protagonist in Power of Three and Omen of the Stars. For more information about him, see here.

  • Badass Boast: After Jagged Peak brings back a hare, he gives the hilariously hammy, "Prey had better watch out!"
  • Call-Back: References Long Shadows and Sign of the Moon by mentioning his mother Shy Fawn and how the Tribe used to live around the lake.
  • The Cameo: His role, essentially. He's there as a token reference to the previous arcs, and to show what kind of cat Lionblaze will become when he's a senior warrior.
  • Cool Old Guy: Is kind-hearted, and very supportive of Half Moon.
  • Demoted to Extra: Lionblaze was a point of view character for twelve books. His previous incarnation, Lion's Roar, is a fairly minor character who is left behind a quarter of the way through the first book of Dawn of the Clans. May also count as Ascended Extra, since he'll be reincarnated as a far more important character.
  • Expy: Essentially an older and wiser Lionblaze, which makes sense because he is Lionblaze. He's also very similar to the recurring "older, wise, hero cat" characters, such as Lionheart, Whitestorm, and Brackenfur.
  • Reincarnation: Many years after he dies, he will be reborn into ThunderClan as Lionblaze, son of Leafpool and Crowfeather.
  • Unexpected Character: Although most readers are familiar with Lionblaze, nobody was expecting his previous incarnation from Sign of the Moon to show up in Dawn of the Clans.

    Quiet Rain

Quiet Rain

"This is a cruel place. But it's my home, for better or worse."

The mother of Gray Wing, Clear Sky, Jagged Peak, and Fluttering Bird. After Jagged Peak runs away to follow the Sun Trail, she convinces Gray Wing to find him and make sure he safely reaches his new home.

  • Back for the Dead: Aside from a single scene in The First Battle where Gray Wing sees her sleeping, she is absent after the first quarter of The Sun Trail until finally returning in the Bonus Scene of The Blazing Star, where she heads out to find her sons. However, she dies in A Forest Divided not long after meeting them.
  • Get Out!: Snaps this to Gray Wing and Jagged Peak when she wants a moment with Clear Sky...so she can give him a complete dressing down for his actions. It ends with her yelling this to him as well and disowning him.
  • The Ghost: She is mentioned frequently in Thunder Rising, but she doesn't appear in at all.
  • Good Parents: She is a good mother who loves her kits dearly.
  • I Have No Son!: In A Forest Divided, she disowns Clear Sky after learning that he killed Rainswept Flower. However, she forgives him after talking to Shaded Moss.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: In A Forest Divided, due to the harsh journey to from the mountains, she catches sick and eventually dies.
  • It's All My Fault: Believes that it's her fault that Fluttering Bird is dead.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: A rare case where both parties are equally sympathetic. Clear Sky fully deserved to be lambasted for what he'd done, but Thunder can't help feeling sorry for him when he sees harshly Quiet Rain treats him in the aftermath.
  • Oh, Crap!: She is shocked and horrified when she realizes that Jagged Peak ran off to join the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • The Runaway: At the end of The Blazing Star's Bonus Scene, Quiet Rain runs away with Sun Shadow to find the Followers of the Sun trail.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: She has a pretty sharp tongue, and rather insensitively says "You're lame!", sounding disappointed, when she learns of Jagged Peak's limp.
  • Sneaky Departure: In The Blazing Star's bonus scene, Sun Shadow and Quiet Rain leave the Tribe in the dead of night.
  • What Does She See in Him?: After disowning him, she cruelly tells Thunder and Star Flower she doesn't know what they see in Clear Sky, right in front of Clear Sky.

    Snow Hare

Snow Hare

"Well, you've always been good at creeping around. You'll be able to sneak up on your prey while it's asleep."

  • Alliterative Name: Stone Song.
  • Happily Married: He's happy to be together with his mate, Hollow Tree.

  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. Shares his name with Stone Song, the cat who led the Tribe into the mountains.
  • The Smart Guy: He organizes that patrols to make sure that every cat can hunt and no one is tired.

One of the elders of the Tribe. She is Stone Song's mate.

  • Greater Need Than Mine: When she and Sharp Hail catch a bird, they don't eat it themselves, instead giving it to Gray Wing so he will be strong enough to find Jagged Peak.
  • Happily Married: She's happy to be together with her mate, Stone Song.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: She's too old to care about being polite. Instead, she lets the younger cats know exactly what she thinks about them.

    Dewy Leaf

Dewy Leaf

"Your kits will never know their father's name!"

Moon Shadow's pregnant mate. She's angry with him for leaving her to find a new home, but she loves him deep down.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: She acts snappish to Moon Shadow all the time, but when Gray Wing is leaving she asks him to tell Moon Shadow that she wants him to be happy in his new home. She also named his son, Sun Shadow, after him.

  • The Leader: In The Blazing Star, once Stoneteller dies, Sun Shadow believes that he becomes the next leader of the Tribe.
  • Parental Substitute: He serves as a father figure for Sun Shadow in The Blazing Star, since his actual father Moon Shadow isn't around anymore.
  • Second Love: Becomes Dewy Leaf's new mate in The Blazing Star after Moon Shadow leaves.

    Broken Feather

Broken Feather

Misty Water's mate. He died sometime before the events of The Sun Trail, due to starvation.

  • Cool Old Guy: Gray Wing speaks off him as a good friend.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Even though he was an elder and Gray Wing is fairly young, they were apparently friends before he died.
  • Posthumous Character: Died of starvation before The Sun Trail even began.

    Jay Frost

Jay Frost

A young Tribe kit. Born sometime before the prologue of The First Battle.

  • Tuckerization: He is named after Jayfrost, a dedicated fan on Kate Cary's blog.

  • The Mentor: He was River Ripple's mentor, teaching him things when he lived in the park.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Subverted. You'd think that he'd die, considering that he's River Ripple's mentor and has no presence in the main story of Thunder Rising. However, he is just separated from River Ripple, and not heard from again. He returns in Riverstar's Home.

Unaffiliated Cats

    "The Stranger"

"The Stranger"

"You're not from around these parts, are you?"

A long-legged brown-and-gray tabby tom whom the Followers of the Sun Trail meet near Highstones. He briefly chats with them and tells them about the other cats living in the forest before leaving.

  • Bit Character: He's just a small, unimportant cat who only briefly appears to tell the Followers of the Sun Trail that they're on the right track.
  • Mr. Exposition: His role in The Sun Trail is to tell the Followers of the Sun Trail about the forest cats and what the name of Highstones is.
  • Nice Guy: He gives the Followers of the Sun Trail some handy information without asking for anything in return, chats with them in a friendly manner instead of trying to fight or flee, and wishes them luck on their journey. From his two pages, it can be surmised that he's a pretty decent fellow.
  • No Name Given: He doesn't give his name to the Followers of the Sun Trail, and the text simply refers to him as "the stranger". Whether he will return to the series and share his name is unknown.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears for two pages, but by telling the Followers of the Sun Trail about the cats living beyond Highstones, he gives them their destination.
  • The Stoic: He barely reacts to being surrounded by a massive group of cats and instead chats with them freely.
  • Tree Cover: Hides in a clump of bracken while watching the Followers of the Sun Trail.
  • Unknown Character: His name isn't revealed, and he's just there to be the guy who points the Followers of the Sun Trail on the right path.

The mother of Petal and Fox. When they were just kittens, she was killed by a badger, leaving them orphaned.

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Evidently died protecting her kits from the badger.
  • Killed Offscreen: The Bonus Scene starts immediately after the badger kills her, so the readers never see her death.
  • Mama Bear: Fought and died to a badger just to protect her kits.
  • Unnamed Parent: Even though the Warriors series gives even the most minor of characters names, we never learn her name.

    Misty

Misty

"All prey around here is ours. Learn that now, before you really get hurt."

A gray and white she-cat that Petal and Fox met in their youth. When they were lost and hungry after their mother's death, Misty and two companions attacked them and chased them off, thinking that the two orphans would steal their prey.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Misty is not a nice cat. But in Thunder Rising, it turns out that she died because she was defending her kits, and she gets sympathy from Clear Sky, Thunder, and Petal.
  • Arch-Enemy: For Petal. She left Petal to die when she was a kit, and Petal has never forgotten her, nor has she forgiven her. She hungers only for revenge.
  • Bit-Part Bad Guys: She's an antagonist, but she's very minor, only appearing for about two pages in each of the first two books, and she's a completely independent character. (And she won't be appearing again, what with being dead.)
  • Defiant to the End: In Thunder Rising, she refuses to be cowed by Clear Sky's patrol.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Leaving two newly orphaned kits to die in The Sun Trail. Yeah, not really a sign of a nice cat.
  • Hidden Depths: In Thunder Rising, her refusal to leave when confronting Clear Sky just seems like her usual Jerkass behaviour, although she is on the end of Disproportionate Retribution, what with being killed for it. Then it turns out that she was trying to protect her kits, and her actions take an entirely different context.
  • Mama Bear: In Thunder Rising, after Clear Sky and Petal kill her, they realize that she was only trying to defend her kits.
  • Series Continuity Error: She's killed in Thunder Rising, but is listed in the allegiances of The First Battle.
  • Slashed Throat: How Clear Sky kills her.
  • Unknown Character: In The Sun Trail, her role was to be a minor, unnamed character in Petal's backstory who made Petal become cynical. She eventually does return and get a name in Thunder Rising, but is killed off almost immediately.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: In Thunder Rising, she returns to the story and is killed after two pages. Her only other appearance is a rather minuscule role in the Bonus Scene of The Sun Trail.

  • The Bus Came Back: Last seen during Wind Runner's bonus scene, he returns to give her a life at the end of Moth Flight's Vision.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: He served as one for Wind Runner. By abandoning her, he made her decide not to form bonds, because in her mind, every cat would eventually abandon her.
  • Never My Fault: Wind Runner notes that he seems angry at her for hurting her leg. However, it's his fault that she hurt her leg, because if he hadn't turned down some free fish, then the pair wouldn't have gone hunting and been attacked by the dog.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. One of Cora and Shorty's kits in Hawkwing's Journey is named Branch.
  • Parental Substitute: Raised Wind Runner after she was orphaned and took care of her. However, after she hurt her leg fighting the dog, he stopped being one, seemingly abandoning her.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Wind Runner's leg was injured when he fought the dog with her, he left her a rabbit and then disappeared. Wind Runner believes that he abandoned her to fend for herself, but it's not made clear if that's the truth.

Tansy

"I know, my dears. I'll hunt soon, when I've got my strength back."

A young mother that Wind Runner meets on the moor. She grew up in the streets of the Twolegplace, but moved to the moor hoping for a better life for her kits. Unfortunately, she doesn't have the necessary set of skills to survive in the wild. She is the mother of Willow Tail and her littermate Frog.

    Cricket

Slate's littermate, who in her backstory, is killed by a fox. She avenges him.

  • A Dog Named "Cat": He's a cat, and his name is Cricket.
  • Killed Offscreen: He and Slate fight a fox, she's knocked out, and when she wakes up, he's already dead.
  • Morality Pet: For Slate. After his death, she only wants to kill the fox responsible, not caring if she dies doing it, though she snaps out of this after being injured and realizing she doesn't want to die.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Lampshaded by Slate. He's lighthearted and doesn't take things too seriously, she is serious and plans ahead.

Thunder's littermates, who died along with their mother Storm.

  • Afterlife Welcome: Seen alongside their mother welcoming Gray Wing to StarClan when he dies.
  • All There in the Manual: Their names are not stated in the series, only mentioned on the Warriors website family tree.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Whether they are toms, she-cats or one of each is not specified.
  • The Cameo: They are not seen when Gray Wing visits Storm, and are only seen briefly, already dead, when he rescues Thunder. Their only appearance is standing alongside their mother to welcome Gray Wing to StarClan when he dies.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: They both died, along with their mother, when Twolegs tore down the house they were sheltering in, crushed by the debris.
  • Death of a Child: They were kits when they died, as was Thunder.
  • No Name Given: They seemingly had no names when they died. Subverted later when the Warriors website family tree reveals their names.
