Dawn of the Clans adds a brand new cast of characters to the Warrior Cats series. This is the character sheet for characters from that arc, as well as Moth Flight's Vision, Thunderstar's Echo, Shadowstar's Life, and Riverstar's Home.

Beware of unmarked spoilers! All spoilers from The Sun Trail, Thunder Rising, The First Battle, The Blazing Star, A Forest Divided, and Path of Stars are unmarked, and there are spoilers for the other arcs.

Main Characters and Clan Founders

Gray Wing

Gray Wing ("Graywing the Wise")

"None of us knows what the future holds. We can only trust our instincts."

The first Dawn of the Clans point of view character. Gray Wing is a young and confident member of the Tribe, who lives a happy, if hard, life with his brother Clear Sky and best friend Turtle Tail. When a group of cats from the Tribe leave to follow the Trail of the Rising Sun to a new home, Gray Wing stays behind, believing his destiny lies in the mountains. However, when his younger brother Jagged Peak runs away to join the Followers of the Sun Trail, Gray Wing is forced to leave the mountains so that he can find his brother and keep him safe on the long journey to a new home. Eventually, Gray Wing and Jagged Peak rejoin the Followers of the Sun Trail and reach the forest.

Unfortunately, Gray Wing watches Clear Sky fall into madness from grief over the deaths of his mate Bright Stream, his second mate Storm, and two of Storm's three kits. When Clear Sky refuses to consider Storm's surviving kit Thunder his son, Gray Wing takes him in and becomes a substitute father to the young tom. Soon, Gray Wing's hope for a quiet life is shattered when Clear Sky's lust for power leads to an all out war, and Gray Wing himself is forced to become leader of the cats on the moor. Although terrified of what the future will bring, Gray Wing fights to save his brother from himself when everyone else has given up hope on him.

Gray Wing will go on to become the legendary WindClan tactician Graywing the Wise, who was renowned for his strategies that focused on the position of the wind.

• A Good Way to Die: He passes peacefully in his nest, surrounded by (almost all—Sparrow Fur and Owl Eyes weren't able to make it in time) his family and friends, with the knowledge that broken relationships are on the mend and that the Clans he just named are going to prosper.
• Accidental Murder: Near the end of The Sun Trail, when he is fighting Fox, a member of Clear Sky's group, he slits his throat without meaning to.
• All-Loving Hero: He tries to befriend every rogue he meets. A special note must be made for Fern: when Gray Wing meets her, he knows she's working for Slash and spying on the Clans, but is willing to look past that and give her food, out of pure compassion for a weak, hungry cat.
• Always Second Best: To his brother Clear Sky. He's the Tribe's second best hunter after Clear Sky, second place in their little brother Jagged Peak's Big Brother Worship, and second place romantically to Clear Sky's mate Bright Stream and second mate Storm. It stems from Gray Wing being a deconstruction of series protagonist Firestar.
• And This Is for...: He says "That's for Thunder" in The Blazing Star when he prevents Star Flower (the cat who led Thunder on) from getting back into the fight, kicking her away.
• Badass in Distress: Near the end of The First Battle, despite his badassery, he is trapped along with Tall Shadow and Jackdaw's Cry by Clear Sky, and Thunder has to get a rescue party to save him.
• Best Friend: It's never stated outright, but his closeness with Tall Shadow seems to indicate this between them.
• Betty and Veronica:
  • Towards Storm. Gentle Gray Wing is the Betty and arrogant Clear Sky is the Veronica; Storm prefers Clear Sky.
  • Also, the sharp-tongued Storm is his Veronica, while his supportive childhood friend Turtle Tail is his Betty.
• Big Damn Heroes: Shows up at just the right moment to save Jagged Peak from an eagle.
• Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: A variation. We have ginger Thunder, dark gray Gray Wing and pale gray Clear Sky.
• Breakout Character: Massively. He was originally mentioned as a renowned strategist of WindClan, impressive to be sure, but not particularly someone you'd expect to be a protagonist in an arc about the Clans' foundings. Word of God is that he just "evolved naturally" into the role and that none of the Erins expected him to be as important as he was when they started writing. His planned death scenes kept getting pushed back, at first due to plot, but by the time he was supposed to die in The First Battle, the editing team was too fond of him to go through with it. While he still dies at the end of the arc, it's after becoming one of the most beloved characters in the whole franchise.
• Cain and Abel: At the end of The Sun Trail, he and his brother Clear Sky have become bitter enemies.
• The Call Knows Where You Live: After he refuses to follow the Sun Trail, Jagged Peak runs away and he has to leave to find him.
• The Cameo:
  • He appears in Blackfoot's Reckoning to give Blackfoot one of his nine lives.
  • He also appears in A Light in the Mist when the Clans have reunited with StarClan.
• Cannot Spit It Out: He loves Storm, but it takes him a while to realize it and he can't put it into words. She gets together with his brother before he can say anything to her about it.
• Cartwright Curse: Gray Wing's first three loves, Bright Stream, Storm, and Turtle Tail, all die. Slate beats the curse, but then Gray Wing himself dies shortly after, so he doesn't get much chance to enjoy it.
• Cat Up a Tree: In The Sun Trail, he tries to chase a squirrel along a branch, nearly falls, and then realizes that he's not sure if he can get down. Jagged Peak has to teach him how.
• Chekhov's Skill: Remember those mountain hunting skills he taught Jagged Peak? They appeared years earlier in Battles of the Clans as WindClan fighting strategies that he had come up with. It looks like we know where he got them from.
• Claustrophobia: He loves open spaces, feeling too closed-in even in a forest. The one time he crawls into a rabbit burrow, it's only because he wants to prove that he's not a coward, and he starts panicking while underground.
• Crash-Into Hello: He first met Wind and Gorse when they ran into each other on the moor.
• Decoy Protagonist: At first, it seems like The First Battle will focus on him like The Sun Trail and Thunder Rising. However, he's only the Deuteragonist, and Thunder is the actual protagonist.
• Deer in the Headlights: In The Sun Trail, when the group is attacked by three dogs, he freezes and Turtle Tail crashes into him.
• Delicate and Sickly: He develops a serious case of asthma due to smoke inhalation during the fire of Thunder Rising. His breathing problems consistently plague him for the rest of the series, slowly turn him into more of a Non-Action Guy who contributes strategy and wisdom instead, and eventually kill him.
• Did Not Get the Girl: Storm chose his brother Clear Sky over him. He's also suggested to have had feelings for Bright Stream, who also chose Clear Sky over him.
• Disappeared Dad:
  • His father never appears, is never named or even mentioned in passing, and it's never even acknowledged that Gray Wing, Clear Sky, Fluttering Bird, and Jagged peak had a father at all.
  • Becomes one himself at the end of Path of Stars when he dies shortly after his kits are born.
• The Ditherer: He has quite a lot of trouble making decisions. He repeatedly changes his mind over whether to follow the Sun Trail, and has a hard time deciding to ask his crush Storm to come and live in the hollow. This comes back to bite him when Storm gets together with his brother Clear Sky, and later dies.
• Epiphany Therapy: Twice in The Sun Trail.
  • He manages to stop blaming himself for Bright Stream's death when he realizes that she wouldn't want him and Clear Sky to spend the rest of their lives unhappy.
  • He moves on past Storm's death when he realizes that it's different from Bright Stream's death because this time it had meaning: Storm managed to save her kit Thunder.
• "Eureka!" Moment: He has one when he realizes that Jagged Peak has run away to find the Followers of the Sun Trail.
• Everyone Can See It: Just about everyone's reaction when they find out he and Turtle Tail have become mates is "about time!"
• Family Theme Naming: When he finally has kits of his own with Slate, they name them all with colors in their names. White Tail, Silver Stripe and Black Ear.
• Good Parents: He's listed as the #1 best father a cat could have for a reason. Thunder is his nephew, not his son; his mate Turtle Tail's kits are not biologically his. Does Gray Wing care? No. He showers them all with love, raises them with kindness, supports them in their struggles, and guides them even when they're grown up. When his biological kits are born, he's surprised that he feels...exactly the same type of love towards them that he does his adopted kits.
• Greater Need Than Mine: When he's leaving to find Jagged Peak, the Tribe cats give him a bird to eat. He tells them to eat it themselves, because none of them have eaten yet. However, he is convinced to eat it anyway.
• Green-Eyed Monster: It's implied that he has a crush on Bright Stream, his brother's mate. Later on, he's in love with Clear Sky's second mate Storm, but he tries to deny his envy so that his brother can be happy.
• Happily Married: In Thunder Rising, he finally comes to love Turtle Tail and gets together with her. However, this happy relationship ends when Turtle Tail dies in The First Battle.
• The Hero Dies: At the end of Path of Stars, he passes away from his illness, surrounded by his friends and family.
• Heroic Self-Deprecation: A non-verbal example; he's completely shocked when Slate tells him how much respect Wind Runner has for him.
• Hiding the Handicap: He gets a serious lung condition after going through the fire in Thunder Rising, but he hides it so that the other cats won't doubt his ability as a leader.
• Hypocrisy Nod: After he gives Jagged Peak a lecture on not running off without looking where he's going, he does it himself. He then notes that he's being a hypocrite, and resolves to try to avoid being one.
• I Have No Son!: A variant. Gray Wing declares that his and Clear Sky's brotherhood is over when Clear Sky rejects his son Thunder. He eventually reconciles with Clear Sky, though.
• Incurable Cough of Death: In Path of Stars, his asthma develops into this, eventually killing him.
• Innocently Insensitive:
  • In The Sun Trail, he talks a lot about Storm, his hopes for a relationship with her, or him looking for her, in front of Turtle Tail, who he has no idea is in love with him. She steadily grows more upset and frustrated by this until she eventually decides to go to Twolegplace.
  • In The First Battle, when Wind Runner loses Emberkit, he tries to comfort her by saying that Emberkit is in a better place. This ends up hurting her even more, and she angrily retorts that there's no better place for a kit than at his mother's belly.
• In-Series Nickname: Generations after his death, the Clans remember him by the name "Graywing the Wise".
• Ironic Echo: When Half Moon is worrying about sending so many cats away to follow the Sun Trail, he tells her that, "None of us knows what the future holds. We can only trust our instincts." This is a combination of two things that she had said earlier.
• It's All My Fault:
  • In The Sun Trail, he blames himself when Bright Stream is carried off by an eagle and dies. He also thinks that Clear Sky blames him for her death. He eventually manages to move on, while Clear Sky never stops blaming himself.
  • It's shown that he still does it in The First Battle, when he worries that it's his fault Clear Sky turned into an enemy and Jagged Peak was crippled.
• I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Interestingly it's not the cat he loves he does it for, but the cat she wants to be with. Gray Wing loves Storm, but she gets together with his brother, Clear Sky. Gray Wing tries to be happy for them, because he knows that Bright Stream's death hurt Clear Sky dearly, and he believes that being with Storm can help him.
• The Leader: Takes up the mantle of leadership while Tall Shadow grieves for Moon Shadow after he dies. However, as Gray Wing's health takes a turn for the worse, Tall Shadow co-leads with him and eventually becomes it's sole leader as Gray Wing becomes unable to keep up, though he still serves as her closest advisor and the closest thing she has to a deputy.
• Leader Wannabe: Inverted in Thunder Rising. Jackdaw's Cry, Shattered Ice, and several other cats want to install Gray Wing as leader, but he doesn't want to lead and just wants to be an ordinary cat. However, he eventually decides to be leader.
• Love Triangle: He loves Storm, who loves Clear Sky. Also, Turtle Tail loves him but he doesn't notice at first.
• The Magnificent: Remembered as "Graywing the Wise" by later generations.
• Never Found the Body: From the point of view of the Tribe. They have no idea if he's alive or dead, due to the collapsing ice bridge.
• Nice Guy: He's compassionate, warm, congenial, and just wants to see all the cats of the forest living together peacefully.
• Non-Action Guy: In the latter half of the arc, his breathing problems force him to stop partaking in battles and hunting patrols. When he does end up in a fight in Path of Stars, he's so hampered by his coughs that he almost dies.
• Oblivious to Love: His ignorance of Turtle Tail's crush on him leads to her leaving to live with Bumble.
• Panicky Expectant Father:
  • In Thunder Rising, he inexplicably feels the urge to be near Turtle Tail at her kitting, despite the protests of the others - even though they're not his kits, and even though he doesn't realize his feelings for her yet.
  • Happens again when Slate is giving birth in Path of Stars.
• Papa Wolf: The one thing guaranteed to turn this kind, even-tempered cat into a snarling menace? Any of his kits being put in danger. Even his brothers aren't safe from his anger.
• Parental Substitute: He becomes this to his little brother Jagged Peak, to his nephew Thunder, and later to Turtle Tail's three kits.
• Platonic Life-Partners: With Tall Shadow.
• Polar Opposite Twins: With Clear Sky. He's humble to the point of self-deprecation and doesn't like change, while Clear Sky is an arrogant visionary. Even their pelt colors reflect this-Clear Sky is pale gray, Gray Wing dark gray.
• A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Subverted, then averted. He acts as a mentor and father figure to Thunder, his nephew. The reason behind this is because Clear Sky Thunder's father was slowly turning into a cruel Anti-Villain. When Gray Wing allows Thunder to visit him, Clear Sky claims custody of his son, who was young and naive, and decides to mentor him. Gray Wing is powerless against this, and fears that Thunder would be influenced and turn cruel. Averted when Thunder deserts and disowns Clear Sky, seeing the error of his ways. Clear Sky eventually regains his senses, and the three (sort of) make up.
• Refusal of the Call: He decides not to follow the Sun Trail. However, fate has other plans and he eventually has to leave his home to follow Jagged Peak.
• Retcon: In Battles of the Clans, he is referred to as one of WindClan's early leaders. However, he actually lead proto-WindClan before the Great Battle.
• Rescue Romance:
  • He thinks that he's in one with Storm after they both save each other. However, she has fallen for his brother Clear Sky.
  • Later happens with him and Slate, as at one point he saves her from a fox.
• Serial Romeo: Taken so far it's almost ridiculous. First, he has a crush on Bright Stream. Then, he meets Storm and falls in love with her. After that, he realizes that Turtle Tail loves him, reciprocates, and becomes her mate. But after Turtle Tail dies, he meets Slate, who becomes his new mate. Yes, Gray Wing actually falls in love with more cats than his brother, a Serial Romeo himself, does.
• Sibling Team:
  • Hunts and fights alongside his brother, Clear Sky. That is, until they declare their brotherhood over at the end of The Sun Trail. By the time they do make up, Gray Wing has become a Non-Action Guy.
  • Early on in The Sun Trail, Gray Wing and Jagged Peak have to work together as a team to travel through the mountains and meet up with the other Followers of the Sun Trail.
• So Happy Together: He and Slate become mates and have a litter of kits, but a moon later he's dead of his asthma. They were both just happy to have what time together they could.
• The Strategist:
  • During the battle with the foxes, he commands the Followers of the Sun Trail and uses strategy to defeat the enemy.
  • He also comes up with the strategies to lure One-Eye into a trap and to rescue Star Flower from Slash's group.
  • Suffice to say, he was so good at this that he became known as Graywing the Wise, a renowned strategist who created much of WindClan's battle strategy.
• Sympathetic Murderer: Near the end of The Sun Trail he kills Fox, The Dragon to Clear Sky. To say he felt bad about it would be a huge understatement.
• Team Dad: Turtle Tail basically describes him as this, saying that he's been like a father to many, offering comfort and guidance and love.
• Trauma Conga Line: His spans the entire arc. His little sister starves to death, he's forced out of his home when his little brother runs away, his brother's pregnant mate (who he may have had feelings for himself) is killed saving him from an eagle, which he blames himself for. Then the cat he loves decides to be with his brother, while the cat who loves him is driven to live in twolegplace because she can't deal with him not returning her feelings, leaving him sad and confused because he doesn't know why she left. Then his little brother breaks his leg and is exiled by his other brother, who is slowly going mad over the grief of losing his first mate. Oh, Gray Wing is haunted by his accidental murder of a cat. Then he develops a serious, eventually fatal, case of asthma; his adopted kits get kidnapped by their abusive father and his mate Turtle Tail is killed while trying to rescue them; he participates in a horrific battle where many of his childhood friends die; he wrestles with feeling useless as his illness worsens and forces him to the sidelines; his mother dies; one of his new kits with Slate get kidnapped as well; and then he dies. And all of this occurs in no more than a year and a half. Fortunately his son is rescued and he's able to have a peaceful reunion with his family before passing, but sheesh.
• Victorious Childhood Friend: With Turtle Tail, who has loved him since kithood.
• What the Hell, Hero?: Calls Clear Sky out sharply for refusing to take in Thunder, as well as the things he's done in the name of "the community".
• White Sheep: A downplayed version, as his brothers and mother are good cats at heart, but also arrogant, spirited, and can be quite cruel. Even his dead little sister, Fluttering Bird, shows a lot of haughtiness when scolding Clear Sky. And then there's Gray Wing, who is patient, warmly paternal, always wants to believe the best in people, and one of the nicest guys in the series.

Thunder

Thunder/Thunderstar

"Can't we agree to look after what we have? Can't we forget about expanding our territory?"

The only surviving son of Clear Sky and Storm. After the death of his mother, Turtle Tail gave him his name and Gray Wing took him to live with his father. However, seeing only his failure to save Storm in Thunder, Clear Sky exiled his son. Gray Wing then brought him to the moor, where he declared that he would be Thunder's father in Clear Sky's stead.

In Thunder Rising, he becomes a point of view character. His skills are naturally suited towards living in the forest, but he struggles to please Gray Wing, while secretly dreaming about his father, Clear Sky. Eventually, Clear Sky asks him to come live in the forest. He accepts, but once he gets there he sees firsthand the cruelty of his father, and ends up leaving to return to Gray Wing.

Thunder will go on to found his own Clan, ThunderClan. He will also be its first leader.

• Ascended Extra: He's a minor (but important) character in The Sun Trail. In Thunder Rising, he's a main character, although not on par with Gray Wing. For The First Battle, he's the protagonist.
• The Atoner: At the end of Thunder Rising, he realizes that he's betrayed the moor group and vows to do whatever it takes to make things up to them.
• Betty and Veronica:
  • He briefly ends up playing the responsible, kind Betty to Clear Sky's Reformed, but Not Tamed Veronica, with Star Flower the Archie. She picks Clear Sky.
  • Also, of his two love interests, demure Violet Dawn is the Betty to boldly flirtatious Star Flower's Veronica.
• Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: A variation. We have ginger Thunder, dark gray Gray Wing and pale gray Clear Sky.
• Brains and Brawn: The brawn to Lightning Tail's brains. Not that Thunder isn't smart, but he usually tends to handle heavy lifting, such as fighting opponents like a fox and Turtle Tail's former mate Tom in The First Battle, while Lightning Tail is more of a planner.
• Calling the Old Man Out: At the end of Thunder Rising, he gives Clear Sky a well deserved smack down, declares that Gray Wing is his true father, and leaves the moor group with Frost.
• The Cameo: He appears in Pinestar's Choice to give Pinestar a life.
• Child of Two Worlds: Thunder is the son of Clear Sky, the leader of the group of cats living in the forest, but when Clear Sky refuses to raise him, Thunder's uncle Gray Wing takes him in and raises him in the moor group. As Thunder grows he feels loyalty to the group he was raised in and views Gray Wing as a father, but also wants to earn Clear Sky's approval and feels more at home in the forest itself than on the moor, so he tries living in each group. Ultimately his relationship with Clear Sky remains rocky and he forms his own group in another part of the forest.
• Chocolate Baby: His amber eyes can at least be excused as coming from Clear Sky's side of the family, as Gray Wing has them, but that doesn't explain how a ginger cat is born to two gray ones.
• Defector from Decadence: At the end of Thunder Rising, he rejects Clear Sky's cruel ways, leaving the forest group with Frost and heading back to the moor group.
• Deuteragonist: In Thunder Rising, he's the second most important character after Gray Wing, and his struggles are a major part of the book.
• The Exile: Clear Sky, his own father, exiles him from the forest.
• Famed In-Story: He will go on to become a legendary Clan Founder.
• Family Theme Naming: According to the Warriors website family tree, his littermates were named Lightning and Rumble, and he's Thunder, while their mother was Storm.
• Founder of the Kingdom: In A Forest Divided, he starts the second Forest Group, which will one day become ThunderClan.
• Happily Adopted: At the end of The Sun Trail, Gray Wing declares that from now on, he will be Thunder's father. As well, he has found a foster mother in Hawk Swoop.
• Happily Married: In Path of Stars, he tells Violet Dawn he wants to get to know her before becoming mates, despite their mutual confession of love, but by Thunderstar's Echo they are officially this.
• If I Do Not Return: In Path of Stars, he goes to help his adopted father against the rogues. He tells his best friend Lightning Tail that if he doesn't make it back, Lightning Tail needs to take over as leader of their group.
• I Have No Son!: In The First Battle, he declares upon returning to the moor that he has no father, explaining that Clear Sky is a bully who sent Frost to die. They do eventually make up, but their relationship will always be strained.
• Last Episode, New Character: He doesn't show up until the last chapter of The Sun Trail, but he's one of the most important characters in the book, and defines the ending. He's a major character for the rest of the books.
• The Leader: Considered one of the six chosen leaders. In The Blazing Star, Gray Wing steps down as a leader due to grief over Turtle Tail's death and appoints Thunder in his place. Then, in A Forest Divided, Thunder starts his own group, which will eventually become ThunderClan.
• Loser Son of Loser Dad: He is treated this way by Wind Runner after returning to the moor in The First Battle; she even says "He's only come back to cause trouble, just like his father."
• Love at First Sight: Must run in the family—he's instantly smitten with Star Flower and Violet Dawn from the moment he meets them.
• Meaningful Name: The kit of Storm, who was nearly killed during a storm of stone and dust.
• Odd Name Out: He is the only Clan Founder to have a one word, forest style name instead of a two word, Tribe style name, and he doesn't adopt one either.
• Parental Abandonment: His mother Storm is dead and his father Clear Sky essentially sent him into exile. Fortunately though, his uncle Gray Wing still cares for him.
• Protectorate: Gray Wing vows to protect him after his father Clear Sky abandons him.
• Red Is Heroic: He's the original ThunderClan hero, since he's the cat that's going to start it up. And of course, he has red fur.
• Retcon: His name was originally said to be from the Thunderpath that runs between ThunderClan's and ShadowClan's territories. Later it was also said that he got the name from his hunting technique of catching prey startled and confused by thunderclaps. In The Sun Trail, he was named Thunder by Turtle Tail because he was born from Storm in the midst of a storm of dust and dirt.
• Second Love: He's this to Violet Dawn, as her first mate, Rain, was killed on the Thunderpath.
• Sibling Team: When he needs a partner, his most regular choice is his (adoptive) brother Lightning Tail, who even received his named because he couldn't be kept apart from Thunder. It takes a while for Lightning Tail to grow up and be helpful to Thunder, but their mission in The First Battle to save Turtle Tail's kits from Tom shows that they make effective partners.
• Sole Survivor: He's the only one of his litter to survive the destruction of Storm's nest.
• Sneaky Departure: In Thunder Rising, he sneaks away from the moor group's camp to explore the forest.
• Start My Own: In A Forest Divided, due to disagreeing with Clear Sky over hunting patrols and being mad at him for falling in love with Star Flower, he leaves the Forest Group for a second time and starts his own group.
• Taking the Bullet: In The Blazing Star, when Pebble Heart tries to keep Wind Runner from touching her ill kit, Wind Runner swipes at him. Thunder jumps in the way and takes the hit himself.
• Tell Me About My Father: In Thunder Rising, he asks Clear Sky to tell him about his mother Storm.
• Theme Naming: Intentionally used by Turtle Tail, who names him Thunder partially because he was born from Storm.
• Took a Level in Badass: In Thunder Rising, he's in the middle of his awkward transitioning stage, so he's pretty clumsy and uncoordinated. By The First Battle, he's fully grown and is much more capable.
• Walking Spoiler: His role in The Sun Trail as the only surviving kit of Clear Sky and Storm makes every single thing in the book that involves him a spoiler.
• Was It All a Lie?: After he finds out that Star Flower betrayed him in The Blazing Star, he wonders this about their relationship. She assures him that it wasn't, but he can't believe it and sends her away.
• "Well Done, Son" Guy: He wants to have the approval of Clear Sky, his father, who doesn't seem to like him very much.

Gray Wing's suave and confident brother. Clear Sky is a natural leader, and he quite literally jumps at the chance to find a new home. However, his mate Bright Stream dies, and he is left blaming himself. While the Followers of the Sun Trail settle in the moor, he takes a group of cats to live in the forest, and his desire to protect his new community leads to him becoming the enemy of Gray Wing and the moor cats. He is also the father of Thunder.

Clear Sky will go on to found his own Clan, SkyClan, and be its first leader. He also becomes a point of view character in The First Battle.

• 0% Approval Rating:
  • In Thunder Rising, it's revealed that most of his group hates the way he runs things and only stay with him because they have nowhere else to go. In The Blazing Star, this is exploited by One Eye so that he can take over.
  • This continues in A Forest Divided when he mistakenly believes everyone must form into one group and everybody disagrees with him. Save for Thunder, the cats that joined Clear Sky's group only did so because they preferred the location rather than because they liked or agreed with Clear Sky.
• Abusive Parents: To Thunder. His refusal to take him in during The Sun Trail is framed as being fuelled by Clear Sky's grief for Storm, but Gray Wing still calls him on it. However, during Thunder Rising he's emotionally manipulative towards Thunder, often employing various cruel means, including throwing him at a fox. He does eventually recognize how much of an asshole he's been and apologize in Path of the Stars, but their relationship is permanently strained at best.
• Ain't Too Proud to Beg: He falls to the ground and begs Slash to return Star Flower when negotiations with him go south in Path of Stars.
  Clear Sky: No! I'll hunt for you! You can have all my prey. Just give me Star Flower!
• Anti-Hero: After The First Battle. He's genuinely trying to ensure peace in the forest and atone for his crimes, but he's still short-tempered, sharp-tongued, and more ruthless than his brother and son.
• Anti-Villain: Most of his villainous actions are done because he doesn't want to be reminded of his failure to protect the cats he cares about, and because he hasn't learned moderation. He also has some serious gray morality going for him. In The First Battle, this leads to him realizing how wrong his actions have been and deciding that he will dedicate the rest of his life to making amends.
• Archnemesis Dad: He's this to Thunder until his Heel–Face Turn in The First Battle.
• The Atoner: In The First Battle, the many pointless deaths during the Great Battle cause him to realize how wrong his actions have been, and he decides to dedicate the rest of his life to making amends.
• The Bait: In The Blazing Star, he decides that he needs to be bait to lure One Eye out alone; he challenges him to a one-on-one fight.
• Betty and Veronica:
  • Towards Storm. Gentle Gray Wing is the Betty and arrogant Clear Sky is the Veronica; Storm prefers Clear Sky.
  • He briefly ends up in a Love Triangle with his son and Star Flower—Thunder is the responsible, kind Betty and Clear Sky is the Reformed, but Not Tamed Veronica. Star Flower picks Clear Sky.
• Big Brother Bully: In Thunder Rising, as soon as he sees Jagged Peak, he drops the niceness and acts ugly towards him, taunting him and accusing him of being lazy and selfish. Gray Wing stands up for Jagged Peak, and Clear Sky begins to apologize only to be rejected by Jagged Peak. As of The Blazing Star, he's no longer this. In fact, he even apologizes to Jagged Peak for kicking him out of the forest.
• Birds of a Feather: With Star Flower. They're equally clever, they have matching ruthless streaks, they're both atoning for past evils caused by said ruthlessness, and they're both truly dedicated when they commit themselves to someone or something.
• Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: A variation. We have ginger Thunder, dark gray Gray Wing and pale gray Clear Sky.
• Break the Haughty: Goes through this during the second half of the series. He realizes exactly how horrible he's been, that no one likes him, gets overthrown by One Eye, and has to go to his brothers and son for help. He realizes he's actually lonely and wants his family around, but that his own actions have driven them all away and that nothing will ever really fix that. His mother brutally disowns him when she learns what she did, and while she does forgive him, the moment of the disowning drives him practically to tears. And then Star Flower gets kidnapped, marking the third time he's lost a pregnant mate in some capacity. Oh, and his own camp believes she faked it. By the time Path of Stars starts, his arrogance is completely gone and he's openly begging—first for the other clan leaders to help him, then for Slash to return his mate.
• Breaking the Fellowship: He leaves the Followers of the Sun Trail along with Jagged Peak, Falling Feather, Quick Water, and Moon Shadow to form his own group.
• Broken Ace: He is confident, suave, and great at hunting and fighting. He also can't seem to succeed at anything he does, constantly loses the ones he loves (sometimes through no fault of his own, sometimes through his own actions), tends to shut himself off to become cold and ruthless, and, once he realizes how horrible he's been, is wracked with guilt.
• Broken Pedestal:
  • Jagged Peak was obsessed with Clear Sky, and with following his lead. However, he turns against Clear Sky after being exiled.
  • He manages to do this with a location, of all things. He thought that the land beyond the Sun Trail would be perfect, but the realization that it was anything but contributed to his Face–Heel Turn.
  • Thunder used to want nothing more than to be respected by his father. However, at the end of Thunder Rising, Clear Sky finally crosses the line by sending Frost out to die, and Thunder turns against him.
• The Bully: Thunder gradually realizes that Clear Sky is one during Thunder Rising.
• Cain and Abel: By the end of The Sun Trail, he has become an enemy to his brother Gray Wing. They eventually reconcile.
• The Cameo:
  • He makes an appearance in the prologue of Hawkwing's Journey to talk to Cloudstar and Brackenheart.
  • Skystar also makes an unnamed appearance in the prologue of Thunder and Shadow and later on in Shattered Sky to talk to Twigpaw.
  • And again in A Light in the Mist when the Clans have reunited with StarClan.
• Cartwright Curse: Both his mates, Bright Stream and Storm, die. This breaks him severely, makes him believe that he can't protect anyone, and is a major contributor to his Face–Heel Turn. Star Flower manages to beat the curse, though—she comes out of her kidnapping and birth safe and sound.
• The Chains of Commanding: During his Knight Templar reign. He feels that he cannot bend his rules even for his family or back down when they ask him to, because as leader he mustn't show bias—but neither will he change his methods, because as leader he's responsible for the well-being of all his cats and he believes they're the best way to ensure that. This ultimately destroys his relationship with Storm and scars his relationships with Thunder and Jagged Peak. In The Blazing Star, Clear Sky gives a borderline-hysterical laugh while expressing his relief at having the spirit-cats to guide him, and Gray Wing realizes that his brother had actually, quietly been crumbling under the weight of his responsibilities beforehand.
• Character Tics: He likes to watch his camp while stretching out on his favorite tree branch.
• Chick Magnet: Not only did he have three she-cats fall in love with him, he was the Veronica in a Love Triangle all three times.
• Cynicism Catalyst: It's either Fluttering Bird's death or Bright Stream's. The former affected him so much that it fuels his determination to never let another cat starve, which is why he starts creating borders; the latter turned him bitter, which is why he becomes a major jerk for the first half of the series.
• Deuteragonist: He's the second most important character in The Sun Trail, and a lot of the book is about how his development compares and contrasts with that of Gray Wing.
• Disappeared Dad: Clear Sky's father is never present in the series, nor is he even mentioned. Surprisingly, this isn't part of his Freudian Excuse.
• Disc-One Final Boss: Set up as the main antagonist of Dawn of the Clans. Then in The First Battle, he realizes the error of his ways and resolves to be a better leader, causing him to drop the antagonist role.
• Diving Save: In Path of Stars, he does this to rescue Black Ear from being hit by a monster on the Thunderpath.
• Dude, Where's My Respect?: In The First Battle, he has this reaction to Falling Feather considering leaving his group - he insists that she should be grateful to him for finding their camp, setting their borders, and leading them. She rightfully points out that they all made the journey together and that his "The Needs of the Many" reasoning is just an excuse to be greedy and seize territory and power.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Even at his absolute worst, Clear Sky's unable to make himself kill his brother Gray Wing in The First Battle.
• The Exile: In The Blazing Star, One Eye brings a group of rogues to take over the Forest Group and drives Clear Sky out of the forest and into exile. However, Clear Sky returns after One Eye is killed by Thunder.
• The Extremist Was Right: Definitely not in his methods, which were needlessly tyranical and cruel, but in his ideas, yes. His invention of borders, in particular, is admitted to be a good one and ultimately becomes a major part of Clan culture.
• Face–Heel Turn: Starts out as an ally of the Followers of the Sun Trail, but eventually becomes their enemy.
• Failure Hero: Clear Sky is constantly failing to achieve his goals. He loses his sister, mate, second mate, and two of his kits. As well, his younger brother is horribly injured due to his fall from a tree (while using the hunting techniques Clear Sky taught him), and he has to watch as one of the cats he tried to save is murdered by his twin brother. His feelings of being worthless and unable to protect anyone eventually lead to his fall to the dark side.
• Fallen Hero: He used to want to protect his Tribemates, but he starts doing terrible things in the name of "the community" and has nearly fallen completely at the end of The Sun Trail. He turns himself around at the end of The First Battle.
• Foil: For his brother Gray Wing. Both leave to find a new home, but while Gray Wing left for selfless reasons and wanted to stay behind to help his family, Clear Sky was restless and just wanted to go on an adventure. And while Gray Wing is content with the older traditions and doesn't care much for change, Clear Sky will do anything to create an ideal world.
• Founder of the Kingdom: In The Sun Trail, he starts up a group in the forest which will eventually become SkyClan.
• Foreshadowing: Early in The Sun Trail, he suggests eating some prey instead of bringing it back to the starving Tribe, on the basis that the hunters should eat first so they can keep hunting, but relents when Gray Wing pushes him. This little exchange is a smaller example of his eventual belief system, the conflict that ensues from it, and the fact that his brother will pull him back from it.
• Freudian Excuse: He was driven mad by his grief over Fluttering Bird's and Bright Stream's deaths, so he tried to create a perfect community where nothing like what happened to them could ever happen again. But despite his best efforts, he loses his second mate as well. One can almost see where he's coming from.
• Freudian Slip: Accidentally refers to his group as a Tribe a few times at the beginning of The First Battle.
• Generation Xerox: Tall Shadow replies that she can see where Clear Sky got his spirit after talking with his mother, Quiet Rain. Thunder also thinks, listening to Quiet Rain, that he now knows where Clear Sky got his arrogance and cruelty.
• Good Parents: After realizing how much of an asshole he was to his son Thunder, he vows to be this towards his kits with Star Flower. He's loving and protective of all of them, including his adopted son Honey Pelt, and what little screentime they get as adults shows them to be happy and well-adjusted.
• Greater Need Than Mine: He takes one look at the meager fresh-kill pile in Path of Stars and tells his camp that he'll eat tomorrow.
• Grudging "Thank You": After Gray Wing and friends save his group in Thunder Rising, his gratitude is ground out of his teeth.
• Happily Married: Bright Stream died shortly after they became mates, and his relationship with Storm was rocky even before her death, but he ultimately finds a loving marriage with Star Flower. In Shadowstar's Life, she's even expecting their second litter.
• Has a Type: All three of his Love Interests have green eyes.
• Heel–Face Turn: In The First Battle, the pointless deaths of the battle causes him to realize the error of his ways, and he stops being a villain.
• Heel Realization: Throughout the whole arc, he keeps telling himself that what he is doing is the right thing, and that his harsh policies are the only way his group will survive. Then, during the Fourtrees showdown at the end of The First Battle, after killing his former friend Rainswept Flower and almost killing his brother Gray Wing, he finally realizes that he's gone too far, and sees how awful he's become. It's at this moment that he vows to change.
• Horrible Judge of Character: Clear Sky correctly judges someone's character exactly once—when he refuses to believe that Star Flower willingly went with Slash. The rest of the time?
  • He lets Tom walk through his territory with Turtle Tail's kidnapped kits because he believes Tom's claim that he's just bringing them back home.
  • Crossing over with paranoia, he believes that Gray Wing's planned meeting in The First Battle is really just his brother's excuse to ambush him.
  • He lets One Eye into the group, refuses to believe Mouse Ears when he talks about his poor history with the old rogue, and doesn't recognize that One Eye challenging Clear Sky's authority in front of Tall Shadow is a bad sign. By the time he realizes he does need to throw One Eye from the group, One Eye has badly attacked Sparrow Fur and killed Tom.
  • He wrestles with doubt over whether Red is trustworthy in Path of Stars, eventually putting him to a Secret Test of Character because he can't take the chance he's wrong.
• Hypocrite: Rages at Gray Wing for killing Fox. However, he had ordered Fox to attack Gray Wing, and Gray Wing accidentally killed him in self-defense.
  • Clear Sky insists that he wants no cat to starve, but when he holds Jackdaw's Cry prisoner, Clear Sky deliberately starves him just because he can, even though he promised Thunder that he would feed Jackdaw's Cry. When confronted about this by Thunder, Clear Sky compeltely disregards it and Storm very strangely does not bring it up when Clear Sky insists that his actions were driven by a desire to prevent cats from starving.
• I Have No Son!: His relationships with his brothers and son, Thunder, are various degrees of strained, and a disowning of said relationship has happened between him and all of them at some point or another. Sometimes it's Clear Sky doing it, sometimes it's the other guy.
• Icy Blue Eyes: His eyes are described as "ice blue", which quite fits with how cold and cruel he is in the first half of the arc. In the latter half, the description is usually used either when he's being an Anti-Hero or when contrasted with love "melting" the ice.
• It's All About Me: It's fairly clear that he would have left Bright Stream behind if she didn't come with him on the quest to follow the Sun Trail.
• It's All My Fault:
  • He and Gray Wing both blame themselves for the death of Bright Stream. While Gray Wing manages to get over it, Clear Sky never does.
  • He also feels this about Storm's death in The Sun Trail. He thinks he should have stopped her from leaving.
  • How he feels about Sparrow Fur's injury in The Blazing Star.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sure, first he Took a Level in Jerkass, but later on, his encounters with Gray Wing show there's still a heart.
• Jumped at the Call: He was really eager to follow the Sun Trail, and threatened to abandon Bright Stream if she didn't come.
• Kick the Dog: Repeatedly done in Thunder Rising and The First Battle.
  • Giving Jagged Peak an unprovoked and undeserved "The Reason You Suck" Speech while his brother was still struggling with self-confidence issues.
  • Embarrassing Leaf to make Thunder look good.
  • Attacking Nightheart's brother after he was already beaten.
  • Deciding to leave Frost for dead even though he was still a useful member of the group.
  • Biggest of all, throwing Thunder, his own son, at a fox as a distraction.
  • Giving Falling Feather a demotion straight to the bottom of the group just for questioning him.
  • Breaking his word to Thunder by refusing to let Jackdaw's Cry, his hostage, have anything to eat.
• Knight Templar: In the first three books. He genuinely believes that everything he does, no matter how cruel it may seem to others, is not only necessary but righteous because it's going to bring about his ideal society, free from death. The realization that he has brought death here hits him hard.
• The Leader: He leads a group of former rogues and Tribe cats in the forest. Eventually, this group will be known as SkyClan.
• Le Parkour: His hunting style involves launching himself off of trees so that he can catch prey.
• Lonely at the Top: He secures a powerful camp and enforces his policies by sacrificing many of his friendships and familial ties. Prior to his Heel Realization he seemed to just bury any negative feelings brought by this choice, but by A Forest Divided he's lonely and mourning the way he burned all those bridges for horrible ends. Fortunately, he's able to find happiness with Star Flower and their kits, make complete peace with Gray Wing, and establish shakily positive relationships with most of the other cats.
• Love at First Sight: When he first meets Storm, the two of them are starstruck and feel embarrassed due to their instant love. They get together a couple of days later.
• Love Interest: He has three: Bright Stream, who died while carrying his kits; Storm, who died in a fire with 2 of their kits; and Star Flower, who successfully gives birth to his kits in Path of Stars.
• Love Redeems:
  • He ultimately cannot make himself kill Gray Wing, and his realization of this is what makes him call a halt to the First Battle.
  • He was already well along his path to redemption at that point, but love and joy he feels for Star Flower and their newborn kits helps him realize how horrible he was to Thunder. His disposition is also a lot sunnier for the rest of Path of Stars than it was in the previous five books.
• Manipulative Bastard: He keeps trying to manipulate Thunder into following and trusting only him, for example by claiming that sending him away was "a test", brushing off Thunder's opinion only to say he didn't mean to afterwards, and praising Thunder in front of other cats, making the other cats look bad. However, Thunder eventually gets sick of this and leaves the Forest Group.
• Meet Cute: When Gray Wing takes Storm to meet him, both are instantly smitten and they have an incredibly awkward conversation. Later, they become mates.
• My God, What Have I Done?:
  • At the end of The First Battle, after killing Rainswept Flower and seeing the destruction of the Great Battle, he realizes how horrible he's been and promises to change.
  • In The Blazing Star, after realizing he let One Eye nearly kill Sparrow Fur.
• Narcissist: He has many of the traits for this in The First Battle. He's prideful and boasts about how he's born to lead and everyone should be grateful to him for doing so, and that when they question him they just don't understand how his way is best. He loves to throw around his weight, bullying cats on his border, starving his captive just because he can, making anyone who questions him fear him, and becoming eager at the thought of making himself more powerful and expanding his territory. He's extremely self-conscious about how others view him, and spends part of the book wondering if cats are talking about him behind his back, and how confronting them about it might look.
• Never My Fault: In Thunder Rising, when he kills Misty, it was her fault for not leaving.
• Not Me This Time: In Moth Flight's Vision, Wind Runner accuses him of having SkyClan raid WindClan for prey, citing Willow Tail's eyewitness account, rabbit bones on the SkyClan side of the border, and his past history of ruthless expansion. She's completely stunned when it's later revealed that Willow Tail was trying to frame SkyClan to get revenge on Red Claw.
• The Oathbreaker: In The First Battle, he takes Jackdaw's Cry as a hostage under the condition that he'll keep Jackdaw's Cry well fed and unharmed, and return him if he returns safely from the peace meeting at the Four Trees. However, once Jackdaw's Cry is alone in the camp, Clear Sky denies him food for the entirety of his stay.
• Outliving One's Offspring: He fathers eight kits and outlives five of them—Bright Stream's litter die with her, two of his kits with Storm die with her, and his son Tiny Branch is killed by a fox in Moth Flight's Vision. In Shadowstar's Life Star Flower is pregnant with another litter, but nothing more is revealed about these kits.
• Panicky Expectant Father: Becomes one when Star Flower is kitting. Considering a) his Cartwright Curse, b) the fact that she had been held hostage and starved not even an hour before, and c) the kits are coming very early, it's quite understandable.
• The Paranoiac: Briefly becomes this in The First Battle when he jumps to the conclusion that his brother Gray Wing—who he has known literally since birth as a calm, peaceful, and reasonable cat—is setting up the meeting so he can ambush him.
• Parents as People: Early on in Thunder Rising, Thunder sees that his father isn't perfect.
• Parental Favoritism: Subverted. He's much more doting and affectionate towards his kits with Star Flower than he ever was with Thunder, which the latter is bitter over. This is due to Clear Sky realizing how badly he failed his firstborn son and vowing to be better this time around, not Thunder being The Unfavorite. When he and Thunder discuss this very matter, Clear Sky is quick to reassure him that Thunder was always the son he wanted, and he was at fault for not realizing it at the time.
• Parental Neglect: Refuses to take in his son Thunder in The Sun Trail due to his grief for Storm. He gets worse from there, then better.
• Polar Opposite Twins: With Gray Wing. He's an arrogant visionary while Gray Wing is humble to the point of self-deprecation and doesn't like change. Even their pelt colors reflect this—Clear Sky is pale gray, Gray Wing dark gray.
• Protectorate: He has a deep sense of responsibility and protectiveness towards cats in his care.
  • In the first half of the arc, he's terrified by the thought of losing someone else to starvation the way he lost his little sister, so he resolves to make sure no cat of his starves. While some of his ideas are good, his actual execution of them is flat-out tyrannical and just makes everyone hate him.
  • He lost Bright Stream while she was pregnant because, in his eyes, he didn't protect her enough. So, when his second and third mates, Storm and Star Flower, each get pregnant, he ramps this up and becomes hugely overprotective. Storm gets fed up with being treated like a kit and leaves him; Star Flower manages to talk him into compromises or, when she can't, show him she's not made of flower petals.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives Jagged Peak a cruel and unprovoked one in Thunder Rising, calling him selfish and lazy. Gray Wing, however, is quick to defend their little brother, and Jagged Peak gives Clear Sky one for kicking him out of the forest.
• Reformed, but Not Tamed: After his Heel Realization. He wants to make up for what he's done, but he still tends to be arrogant, sharp-tongued, and pushy about it.
• Reformed, but Rejected: In the latter half of the arc, he genuinely tries to make up for his past actions, but almost nobody likes him or has forgiven him for what he's done. Of the cats he's hurt, only Gray Wing fully does—his relationships with Thunder and Jagged Peak, while improved, are still strained.
• Sadist Teacher: His method of training in Thunder Rising and The First Battle.
  • In Thunder Rising, he insists that Thunder learn to jump from tree to tree despite the fact that the trees are burned and might not hold his weight (and Clear Sky had driven out his own brother Jagged Peak for being injured after falling out of a tree.) He insults him when he hesitates, and once Thunder finally does what he wants and a branch ends up breaking beneath him, Clear Sky calls him reckless.
  • In The First Battle, he has his cats train with claws unsheathed, and uses the opportunity to put fear into a cat who questioned him.
• Second Love: Falls in Love at First Sight with Storm after Bright Stream dies...and then she dies too. Star Flower's his third love.
• Serial Romeo: He has three mates over the course of the arc and fathers a total of eight kits between them.
• Sibling Team: Hunts and fights alongside his brother Gray Wing. However, they declare their brotherhood over at the end of The Sun Trail. By the time they do make up, Gray Wing has become a Non-Action Guy.
• Social Darwinist: After Jagged Peak breaks his leg, he kicks him out of the group because he believes that cats who "are too weak to contribute to the community" should be left to fend for themselves. He pulls the same thing on Frost in Thunder Rising. This prompts Thunder to leave Clear Sky's group of cats.
• Sour Supporter: When Gray Wing wants to bring prey that Clear Sky was eating back to the Tribe instead, Clear Sky grumbles about it. However, he knows that it's the right thing to do.
• Stepford Smiler: After losing Bright Stream, he reacts to everything with cold politeness that hides his grief. Eventually, the act starts slipping.
• That Man Is Dead: At the end of The Sun Trail, he tells Gray Wing that the cat he was in the mountains doesn't exist anymore.
• Took a Level in Jerkass:
  • After forming his own community, his inner turmoil takes its toll on him and he becomes self-centered and antagonistic. Gray Wing eventually declares their brotherhood over.
  • He inexplicably acts like pre-Heel–Face Turn Clear Sky in Moth Flight's Vision. There's an out-of-universe justification for it, as that book was written before his redemption arc was completed, even though it chronologically occurs after Dawn of the Clans. A possible in-universe explanation is that his grief for his recently-deceased brother and sick (then later dead) son makes him temporarily revert, as he's back to normal in Thunderstar's Echo and Shadowstar's Life.
• Trauma Conga Line:
  • First his little sister dies. Then his pregnant mate is carried off by eagles and eaten. Then his little brother falls from a tree and breaks his leg. Then his other brother Gray Wing kills a cat who had joined up with him, and who he was responsible for. Then his new mate runs off from him. Then she dies, as do two of his kits. And he blames himself for all of it.
  • Picks up again from The Blazing Star on. He's kicked out of his own camp by One Eye while his cats do nothing to interfere, his mother disowns him and dies, his third mate is kidnapped while pregnant, his twin brother dies, and then in Moth Flight's Vision, his son dies. And this all occurs in the span of roughly a few moons.
• Utopia Justifies the Means: He's driven by his desire to create a utopian community where no one will ever starve again...by enforcing tyrannical Social Darwinist policies that stamp out anyone who doesn't "contribute" to said community. He later realizes just how wrong this mentality is, even sadly telling Quick Water that SkyClan would never be grateful to gain land by driving out ShadowClan in Shadowstar's Life.
• Walking Spoiler: The fact that Clear Sky turns bad is spoilery enough, but he's also Thunder's father. In fact, he's so hard to discuss that this page had to adopt an "only the latest book" spoiler policy, or else his entire section would be nothing but a ridiculously long swathe of spoiler tags.

• Would Hurt a Child: It says a lot about who he is becoming in Thunder Rising, that when finding orphaned kits, his instinctive reaction is to suggest Mercy Killing them (his group didn't have a nursing queen, so he didn't think they could adopt them, but that doesn't preclude looking for someone else who can).

Tall Shadow

A calm, quick-witted, and determined she-cat. Although somewhat of a loner, she is a natural leader and firmly believes in The Power of Friendship. (No, seriously.) After the death of Shaded Moss, she takes over as leader of the Followers of the Sun Trail. However, in Thunder Rising, her rigid adherence to the ways of the Tribe starts causing problems for the Moor Group, and more than a few cats begin to doubt her leadership.

Tall Shadow will go on to found her own Clan, ShadowClan, and be its first leader.

• Badass in Distress: Near the end of The First Battle, Tall Shadow is trapped by Clear Sky along with Gray Wing and Jackdaw's Cry. She can't escape despite her badassery, so Thunder has to get the others in the Moor Group to rescue her and her allies.

A lithe and speedy she-cat who lives on the moor with her mate Gorse. Although initially she doesn't trust the Followers of the Sun Trail, she and Gorse warm up to them eventually, and become the first outsiders accepted into the Moor Group in The First Battle. She is also slim enough to fit into tunnels, and she uses this ability to chase prey beneath the earth. In The First Battle, she is pregnant with kits.

Wind will go on to found her own Clan, WindClan, and be its first leader.

• Abusive Parents: She is on the emotionally abusive side, not caring how hurtful her words are to Moth Flight as she blames her daughter for everything. While some of the time it was understandable for her to be upset - Moth Flight had lost track of the kits she was babysitting, and later that very day nearly got herself killed - there was no call for some of the things she said, like that they probably made such a small catch because of Moth Flight tripping over her own paws, or saying that WindClan would be better off without her.
• The Ace: In Moth Flight's Vision, Moth Flight thinks about how her mother is respected and so good at everything she does.

River Ripple

River Ripple/Riverstar (Ripple)

"I don't like giving myself labels. I live by the river, and that's all any cat needs to know."

"Sometimes we can't stop others from making mistakes. But we can help them when they do."

A cat who lives by the river, in his youth, he was named Ripple, and lived with the Cats of the Park in a natural park. However, when the park was demolished, he was separated from his mentor Arc and sent adrift on the river. After seeing how the water protected him, he added the "River" part to his name and was thankful to it ever since.

By the time the story begins, River Ripple is an elegant cat who goes where he pleases. He is good friends with Nightheart, a fellow swimming cat, and becomes an ally of Gray Wing and his friends. And of course, he's fabulous.

River Ripple will go on to found his own Clan, RiverClan, and be its first leader. He will also come up with the idea for the mentor-apprentice system.

One of daughters Wind Runner and Gorse Fur, born during The First Battle. When her mother leaves the hollow, she takes Moth Flight with her. However, Moth Flight grows up to be an easily distracted cat obsessed with herbs, causing Wind Runner to disapprove of her. She's a minor character in Dawn of the Clans, but is the star of the followup Super Edition, Moth Flight's Vision, which expands the story of how she discovered the Moonstone and became the first medicine cat into a full length novel.

• So Proud of You: In Moth Flight's Vision, she says this to her son Honey Pelt when he courageously accepts her decision to send him to SkyClan, and then to all of her kits in the epilogue.
• Teen Pregnancy: This is implied as she's repeatedly mentioned as being young. Estimates show that she is around the age of a modern apprentice. Before it's revealed that she's pregnant, it's even mentioned by other characters that she's too young to know much about childbirth and kittens. With her mate dead, Moth Flight couldn't raise her kits on her own, both due to her youth and her job as a medicine cat. She ended up regretting her kits and the Clans enacted a law that medicine cats couldn't have children.
• Vow of Celibacy: She's the reason that the medicine cats can never take a mate or have kits rule came to be. She realizes that her kits are a distraction, and she can't perform her duties to the best of her ability with them around, so she gives them up and makes the other medicine cats vow to never take mates.

Jagged Peak

Jagged Peak

"[The other kits] only want to do dumb stuff. Pouncing on a pebble and pretending it's an eagle! I want to pounce on real eagles!"

The younger brother of Gray Wing and Clear Sky. Jagged Peak longs to join the Followers of the Sun Trail on their quest, but is unable to because of his young age. After Gray Wing boosts his confidence by teaching him some hunting skills, he runs away from home to follow the Sun Trail. Gray Wing follows after him to protect him, and Jagged Peak uses his excellent tracking skills to lead them to the Followers of the Sun Trail.

Once the Followers of the Sun Trail reach their new home, Jagged Peak leaves the moor with Clear Sky to live in the forest. However, while hunting he falls and injures his leg. With his recovery not going anywhere, Clear Sky exiles him from the forest, and he is taken back by the Moor Group. Self-confidence shattered, Jagged Peak now struggles to find a way to become useful to his companions.

• Annoying Younger Sibling: Gray Wing started to find him grating back when they were in the Tribe. When Jagged Peak reveals his tracking skills, Gray Wing's annoyance with him fades.

Gray Wing's sarcastic best friend. Although he thinks of her as only a friend, she has a not-so-secret crush on him, and is frustrated when he doesn't reciprocate. When Gray Wing falls in love with a rogue named Storm, Turtle Tail leaves the moor to become a kittypet, living with her friend Bumble. Their owners soon bring in a third cat named Tom, who Turtle tail gets together with to try to ease the pain of Gray Wing's rejection. However, Tom hides a secret cruel side, and attempts to manipulate Turtle Tail when she becomes pregnant. She returns to the moor permanently, giving birth to three kits she names Owl Eyes, Sparrow Fur, and Pebble Heart. Gray Wing becomes a father figure to her kits, and eventually reciprocates her love, becoming her mate.

However, her beliefs started to change when she met the forest group. Petal is the protagonist of The Sun Trail's Bonus Scene.

A strong and somewhat dorky tom who lives on the moor with Wind. He initially dislikes the Followers of the Sun Trail, but warms up to them as Wind does. Was born by the river, but moved to the moor because he felt it suited him better. He also loves eating, but hates fish.

Gorse will go on to be the first deputy of WindClan under his mate, Wind. After she dies, he will succeed her as leader.

• Beware the Nice Ones: He's furious of the notion of taking the injured Wind Runner to the Moonstone fearing that she will die. He didn't realize she'd be completely healed and given 8 more lives though.

• Cool Teacher: To Apple Blossom. Apple Blossom has fond memories of him teaching her and even states that he never got impatient with her.

A mysterious she-cat who appears at the Four Trees wishing to meet Thunder in The Blazing Star. She offers to train him, and he starts to develop feelings for her. However, she is actually the daughter of One Eye, a villainous rogue who took over the forest, and was feeding him information about the cats in the hollow. Outraged at her deception, Thunder drives her away after One Eye is slain.

In A Forest Divided, she returns, and is taken in by Clear Sky when he and Thunder find her starving in the forest. Promising to be loyal to her new companions, she starts to worm her way into Clear Sky's heart.

• Birds of a Feather: With Clear Sky. They're equally clever, they have matching ruthless streaks, they're both atoning for past evils caused by said ruthlessness, and they're both truly dedicated when they commit themselves to someone or something.
• Childhood Marriage Promise: She made one to Slash when they were younger. Ultimately, however, she falls in love and becomes mates with Clear Sky.
• Daddy's Little Villain: Downplayed. Her love and loyalty for her father are why she acts as a spy, but she admits she regrets doing it in A Forest Divided.

• Foreshadowing: During one of her meetings with Thunder, she expresses disbelief that one of his friends doesn't realize that family is the most important thing ever. This hints that she has some sort of strong familial ties, which turn out to link her to One Eye, her father.
• Good All Along: The end of A Forest Divided casts doubt on whether she is actually trustworthy, only for Path of Stars to reveal that she is indeed one of the good guys.
• Greater Need Than Mine: She refuses to touch the rabbit Clear Sky catches for her in Path of Stars until all the hunting patrols have returned. When they do, she trades the rabbit for a mouse the second Clear Sky admits the camp would appreciate it.
• Happily Married: Despite the others' doubts, she proves herself to be this with Clear Sky, and in Shadowstar's Life she's expecting their second litter.
• Hit Me, Dammit!: In Path of Stars, she has to convince Thunder to attack her during training so that she can demonstrate the moves she knows. She points out that she's not made out of cherry blossoms and that if she can give birth to three kits then she can certainly teach them some battle moves.
• I Reject Your Reality: While Star Flower regrets the evil she caused by staying loyal to her father, she never acknowledges that he was an evil monster, and even calls him a "true ray of light" after his death.

After meeting, Blue Whisker and Shivering Rose became inseparable as kits and retained their close friendship as grown cats.

Thorn is a sickly tom with splotchy fur. However, Thorn and Dew's descriptions are mixed up in the allegiances for a few books.

During "Moth Flight's Vision" she becomes SkyClan's second medicine cat after Micah dies.

A former member of Slash's group, and one of their best hunters, who runs away in fear after leading the dogs to them. He joins Clear Sky's group without telling them this, which makes them take a while to trust him.

• The Corruptible: Subverted. As part of a Secret Test of Character, Clear Sky has Nettle tempt him into doing certain things that go against their values. Red refuses, and shows he is pure of heart.
• Career Versus Man: Is the "Man" for Acorn Fur. After StarClan decrees that medicine cats cannot have mates or kits, she is forced to choose to be his mate or the medicine cat. She chooses her career over him.
• Dark and Troubled Past: Was part of Slash's group, constantly abused and underfed, then escaped after leading dogs on to them by mistake, which end up killing a few of them. This causes him problems in both his own group and with others.
• Did Not Get the Girl: In Moth Flight's Vision, he and Acorn Fur start to grow closer, and eventually talk about sharing a nest. However, Moth Flight tells the medicine cats that due to her own troubles it is best if medicine cats focus on all Clanmates equally, and StarClan agrees and establishes that medicine cats cannot take a mate or have kits. Acorn Fur chooses StarClan.
• Easily Forgiven: Subverted. When his past is revealed to Clear Sky's group, it takes time and two secret tests of character to convince Clear Sky he is loyal. He also isn't forgiven by Willow Tail for leading the dogs on to them by mistake, to the point where she instigates a fight between WindClan and SkyClan just to kill him.
  • However, he is quick to forgive others. After he finds out about Clear Sky's test of character, he only needs to remember that Clear Sky has kits to understand why he absolutely needs to know he can trust him. After Willow Tail admits everything she did, and apologizes as she is dying, he forgives her for causing the battle.
• Florence Nightingale Effect: Unclear whether it's this, but ultimately subverted. He and Acorn Fur start to fall in love after she treats his wounds, but don't end up together, as StarClan makes it a rule that medicine cats cannot have a mate or kits to distract from their duties, and Acorn Fur chooses her duties over him.
• Heel–Face Turn: Like many of the rogues in Slash's group, he isn't evil, but simply desperate and afraid of his leader. After proving himself to Clear Sky and renaming himself, he stands up to Slash and refuses to return.
• Meaningful Rename: His name was originally Red. After he proves himself to Clear Sky, he and the other leaders agree to make Red and the other rogues part of their groups officially. Some of the rogues change their names to sound more like mountain cats, and Red chooses the name Red Claw, which Clear Sky calls "a good name for a fine hunter".
• Nice Guy: Towards most of Slash's group, as he is one of the hunters, and later among Clear Sky's group, always ready to contribute, though this is also due to being eager to prove himself as a new addition. Also takes the blame for Nettle after he eats when they are supposed to be out hunting, which impresses Clear Sky.
• Offscreen Romance: His brief relationship with Acorn Fur is never shown, only mentioned by Acorn Fur to the other medicine cats.
• One-Steve Limit: Averted. His original name, Red, is both the name of Russetfur before joining ShadowClan and a rogue in SkyClan's Destiny.
• Secret Test of Character: After Clear Sky finds out he was one of Slash's rogues, he sets up tests to prove his loyalty. First, he and Nettle hunt for the entire group, not eating until the group is fed. Nettle tries to tempt him into eating a bit, even eating himself, but Red refuses, even taking the blame when Clear Sky (secretly observing) confronts them. Later, Clear Sky has Nettle tell Red about his past, and suggest they overthrow him and put Red in his place. Red refuses, attacking Nettle, showing he isn't a traitor.

However, by the time of Tallstar's Revenge, WindClan tells the story of how he invented tunneling as though he was a super awesome hero who braved a deadly blizzard to single-handedly save his starving Clan by inventing tunneling. Although he expected to live with the Tribe until the end of his days, Shaded Moss is honoured to lead the crew. He's also Rainswept Flower's loving father.

• The Exile: At the end of Thunder Rising, Clear Sky kicks him out of the forest because of his injury. Frost was supposed to be left for dead, but Thunder goes with him and takes him to the moor group.

When he was just a kit, Fox lost his mother to a badger. He and his sister Petal decided that they could only rely on each other. However, his beliefs started to change when he met the forest group, which is led by Clear Sky. He joined because of his love for Falling Feather. However, he was killed in a border dispute with Gray Wing before anything developed.

• Break the Cutie: In Thunder Rising she tells her best friend a hard truth, so her friend abandons her. Then her friend's ex starts abusing her, so she feels she must leave her housefolk. But the moor cats reject her and she ends up barely surviving in the forest, slowly starving to death. Then she either gets killed by a fox or by Clear Sky. She goes from kind and fun to broken and alone.
• Broken Bird: Becomes this in Thunder Rising. She tries to become badass and survive on her own after Turtle Tail leaves, Tom abuses her, and the moor cats reject her, but it doesn't work, and she dies.
• Cultural Rebel: Unlike most kittypets in the series, she adores the forest and isn't too frightened of the cats that live there.

A kittypet who was abandoned by his Twolegs. He was taken to an animal shelter for a while, but was eventually adopted by Bumble's Twolegs. Fathered Turtle Tail's kits, but didn't tell her that the Twolegs would take them away when they were born. Finding this out caused Turtle Tail to go back to the moor. His anger over this caused him to reveal his true colours, and he began beating Bumble, forcing her out into the wild as well. In The First Battle, he shows up on the moor and steals Turtle Tail's kits, but they're rescued by Lightning Tail and Thunder. He returns in The Blazing Star, bringing with him One Eye, a deadly rogue from the swamp.

• A Dog Named "Dog": Lampshaded by Gray Wing, who is surprised that twolegs would name a tom "Tom", and considers it further proof that all twolegs are crazy. This also trips up Thunder in The First Battle, because when Tom tells him his name, he thinks Tom is saying that he is a tom.
• Asshole Victim: He's a cruel, abusive, and possessive bully who is eventually killed by One Eye. Absolutely no one is sad about it, save his kits, and even they move on pretty quickly.

However, while Clear Sky thinks that he just wants to grow stronger, he has far more sinister reasons for wanting to become part of the group.

• All There in the Manual: According to the Warriors website family tree, One Eye resides in the Dark Forest following his death.
• Arc Villain: He is the main villain of The Blazing Star. However, he dies in that book, so he won't play the role of the villain any longer. In A Forest Divided, his successor Slash appears and seems to be the true final villain of Dawn of the Clans.
• Disc-One Final Boss: Set up as the new villain after Clear Sky. Then killed at the end of The Blazing Star. Slash, a new character introduced in A Forest Divided, appears to be the true villain.
• Disproportionate Retribution: In The Blazing Star, he tries to kill Sparrow Fur when she asks to see her father. He only fails because Tom saves her, so he kills Tom, then later captures Sparrow Fur and tortures her. As well, when Acorn Fur protects her friends from his rogues, he has them surround her and all brutally beat her, focusing on inflicting head wounds.
• Establishing Character Moment: In The Blazing Star, the first thing he does is land almost on Clear Sky, then attack his ally Tom, snapping that he can speak for himself.

Throughout the book, we quickly learn that Mouse Ear wasn't kidding; One Eye imprisons and tortures Sparrow Fur, permenately scars his followers with his "Mark" (see below), and has his followers brutally beat up Sparrow Fur, and later Clear Sky, all with blood-chilling joy.
• Pride: He's very arrogant and clearly thinks very highly of himself.
• The Sociopath: Shows traits of one; he has a complete Lack of Empathy, a selfish, sadistic streak, and is very arrogant and prone to bragging to the point of at least once referring to himself in the third person.
• Third-Person Person: For a little bit in The Blazing Star, when facing off against Clear Sky.
  One Eye: You'll kill me, will you? You'll kill One Eye? If One Eye were that easy to kill, he'd never have survived kithood.

• Back for the Dead: In Riverstar's Home, he is shown to have fled the Clans, recruited more rogues and subjugated the cats of the park. When Riverstar comes to stop him, the battle ends with his presumed death falling into a river and drowning.

He starves most of them except for his handful of friends, has anyone who expresses displeasure brutally beaten, compares his cats to foxes, abuses Fern and his other spies, and when they get injured by the dogs, he ditches them, deciding that caring for them is too much work.
• Casanova Wannabe: He wanted Star Flower, but she picked Clear Sky over him. Then in Path of Stars, he tries to get Violet, one of his rogues, to become his mate, and she rejects him as well.
• Dark Is Evil: Like many other villains, he is a brown tabby.
• Disney Villain Death: Is pushed into a fast flowing river and doesn't come up again, presumably drowning.
• Ear Notch: He has torn ears that are nicked at the tip.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He loses because he cannot understand loyalty, and just thinks that all his cats will come back to him when he returns. Also, Clear Sky thinks that he doesn't know what love is.
• Evil Counterpart: He's what Clear Sky would have been if he had been motivated by greed rather than fear.
• I Have Your Wife: He kidnaps Star Flower at the end of A Forest Divided.
• Immediate Self-Contradiction: A variation. When confronting the cats at Fourtrees, he claims that his cats were free to leave him whenever they wanted. Fern Leaf says he is lying, and says he threatened to hurt her sister Beech if she left. His response is "So. Beech died anyway," which basically admits that she is right.
• It Amused Me: In Path of Stars, he reveals that he just kidnapped Star Flower because he thought it would be funny to see Clear Sky try to convince the other leaders to help save her, and that his real plan was just to steal the prey out of the paws of the cats from the groups.
• Karma Houdini: What's his punishment for kidnapping and starving a pregnant Star Flower, abusing his rogues, stealing prey, and attacking the Clans? Nothing—he escapes to live another day.
• Karma Houdini Warranty: In Riverstar's Home, his followers abandon him and he's presumably killed by being pushed off a waterfall into a river where he drowns. This happens after he attempted to subjugate another group of cats, and threatened to kill an elder. His death was a long time coming.
• Kick the Dog: He outright abuses his ally, Fern. He also kidnaps Star Flower — who is pregnant with Clear Sky's kits — to get Clear Sky and the other leaders to meet him at the Four Trees so they can share their prey with him and his group. In Path of Stars, he also ditches his group when they get injured by the dogs.
• Lazy Bum: He is perfectly capable of catching prey for himself, but menaces the groups because he doesn't want to, and thinks they should do it for him. As well, in Path of Stars, he decides that helping his rogues recover from the dog attack is too much work, and leaves them.
• Lecherous Licking: While kidnapping Star Flower, he scratches her on the cheek, then pauses to lap at the blood.
• The Leader: He leads the rogues with One Eye dead. However, after they get injured by the dogs, he decides that caring for them is too much work, so he leaves.

• Offing the Offspring: In Riverstar's Home, one line implies he may have done this to his own kits.

• Never My Fault: Wind Runner notes that he seems angry at her for hurting her leg. However, it's his fault that she hurt her leg, because if he hadn't turned down some free fish, then the pair wouldn't have gone hunting and been attacked by the dog.
• One-Steve Limit: Averted. One of Cora and Shorty's kits in Hawkwing's Journey is named Branch.
• Parental Substitute: Raised Wind Runner after she was orphaned and took care of her. However, after she hurt her leg fighting the dog, he stopped being one, seemingly abandoning her.
