Art Lean
Portrayed by: Kenneth Edwards
- Badass Normal: He far outclasses most Earthrealm warriors, making it past the extremely big stairway without resting. It is mentioned in the novelization that he was granted the right to fight Goro because he was the one with the most victories up to that point.
- Black Dude Dies First: First named black dude, at any rate.
- Canon Foreigner: He's an original character created for the film.
- Mauve Shirt: He's established as a fellow martial artist with mutual respect for Johnny Cage, but falls to Goro in the tournament semifinals.
- Sacrificial Lamb: He exists solely to show the main cast (and the audience) how badass Goro is.
- This Is Gonna Suck: The look on his face when about to square off against Goro says it all.
- Worthy Opponent: In the novelization, Goro shows respect for him, congratulating him for the fight before killing him.
- Your Soul Is Mine!: Shang Tsung gets a major Kick the Dog moment by devouring his soul.
Chan Kang
Portrayed by: Steven Ho
- Ascended Extra: According to his bio from the first game, Liu Kang has a brother named Chow and his whereabouts are unknown... and that's all we hear about him. In the movie, he's named Chan, actually appears (in flashback and spirit form) and serves as Liu's motivation for entering the tournament.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: As brave as he was, poor Chan didn't stand a chance against Shang Tsung.
- Doomed by Canon: His death is Liu Kang's motive to put Shang Tsung to rest.
- Finishing Stomp: How Shang Tsung finishes him.
- Spell My Name with an S: Chan or Chen?
- Too Good for This Sinful Earth: From what we see and how the other characters talk about him, Chan was an honest and brave soul who stepped up to be Earthrealm's champion when his brother ran away from that responsibility. Despite being outclassed by Shang Tsung and suffering a horrific fate, even to the end he never resented or hated his brother.
- The Unchosen One: With his older brother being The Chosen One yet deciding to commit Refusal of the Call, Chan chose to prepare for the tournament in his stead. Though he would suffer for it, Raiden makes it clear to Liu that Chan was responsible for his own choices and he was not forced into it by obligation.
- Your Soul Is Mine!: As with pretty much all of Shang Tsung's victims in the movie, Chan suffers this fate. His form is used in a Shape Shifter Guilt Trip against Liu Kang during the final battle, but Liu Kang sees right through it.
