Spectral Keepers

The four Monster Keepers who inherited the Spectral Familiars, a group of spirits that helped create the Monster Sanctuary centuries ago.

    In general
  • Blue Blood: While the Monster Sanctuary doesn't really have any nobility, the Spectral Keepers are the closest to it, having the four Spectral Familiars to guide them to greatness and advise them.
  • Meaningful Name: Each of the Keeper's lineage's name is associated with the Spectral Familiar's species.
    • House Veles is named after the Slavic god of the underworld, who is associated with wolves (one of his nicknames is "lord of wolves"). Its Familiar is the Spectral Wolf.
    • House Heqet is named after the Egyptian goddess of fertility, who takes the form of a frog. Its Familiar is the Spectral Toad.
    • House Thiazi is named after the Jötunn from Norse mythology, who can transform into an eagle. Its Familiar is the Spectral Eagle.
    • House Narasimha is named after the fourth Avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, who is a man with a lion's head. Its Familiar is the Spectral Lion.

    Hero

The Hero

The player character and one of the four Spectral Keepers. Their Familiar is determined by your choice.

  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: At the start of the game, you type the Hero's name. Their last name is determined by the Familiar you choose.
  • Heroic Mime: They never speak, but their Spectral Familiar does the talking for them.
  • Noble Wolf: The "default" Spectral Familiar for the player character is the Spirit Wolf.
  • Purely Aesthetic Gender: Their gender doesn't impact the gameplay. In addition, the player can change their gender by going to a tailor.
  • True Blue Femininity: The female's default costume and coloring is blue.

    Will

Will

A studious yet inexperienced Spectral Keeper. His default Spectral Familiar is the Spectral Toad.

  • Amphibian at Large: If the player character didn't choose the Spectral Frog as their familiar, he's the Spectral Frog's Keeper.
  • Badass Bookworm: While he prefers studying over fighting and is scared of fighting a Champion monster at first, he is still a Spectral Keeper in his own right.
  • Monster Compendium: He keeps a Monster Journal, an encyclopedia about the monsters in the Sanctuary, which was written by his grandfather. He gives a spare one to the Player when they first meet.

    Julia

Julia

A dutiful but competitive Spectral Keeper. Her default Familiar is the Spectral Eagle.

  • Noble Bird of Prey: Unless the player character picked it, she's the Keeper of the Spectral Eagle.
  • Pink Means Feminine: She wears a magenta dress.
  • Spirited Competitor: Julia is the most duty-minded of the Friendly Rivals, but is still more than willing to treat the Horizon Beach treasure hunt and the search for the Key of Power as competitions with her fellow Keepers.
  • Smurfette Principle: Unless the player chooses to be female, she is the sole female of the Spectral Keepers.

    Leonard

Leonard

A pompous Spectral Keeper. His default Familiar is the Spectral Lion.

  • Cain and Abel: His older brother, Richard, is the alchemist Chymes, who defeated him and stole his Familiar at the Underworld.
  • Glory Hound: He enters the Blue Caves looking to gain renown by defeating the Monster Champions that have been cropping up. He refuses to believe Will when he confirms that the player character defeated one, claiming that it must have been a regular monster that they were too weak to do well against.
  • Jerk Jock: He belittles the Hero and Will's inexperience when the three meet at the entrance of the Blue Caves.
  • Hypocrite: He accuses the player character of being weak and needing their Spectral Familiar as a Hyper-Competent Sidekick, apparently not realizing that that's the perfect description of him.
  • King of Beasts: He's the Keeper of the Spectral Lion unless the player character chooses that as their familiar.
  • Meaningful Name: Leonard means “lion-hearted,” which makes sense with his default Familiar being the Spectral Lion.

The Monster Keepers

    Old Buran

An elderly Keeper that trained new Keepers at the end of the Keeper's Trail.

    The Hero's Parents

The Hero's Parents

The hero’s parents. Their father is a former Monster Keeper and Spectral Keeper, who passed down his Spectral Familiar to the Hero.

  • So Proud of You: As the Hero climbs up the ranks, they become more proud of their accomplishment.

    Duel Trainer Gotthelm

    Eric

A Keeper Dragoon who helps the Spectral Keepers against the Alchemists.

  • Dead All Along: The real Eric was murdered by Marduk, who has impersonated his appearance to deceive the Keepers.
  • Furnace Body Disposal: Considering that Marduk murdered him in the Magma Chamber, it is obvious what Marduk did with the body afterwards.
  • Impersonation-Exclusive Character: Little is known about the real Eric, aside from his rank, as Marduk murdered and impersonated him 23 years before the plot began.

Other NPCs

    Bex
A wanderer who wants to see the many wonders in the Monster Sanctuary. He is always accompanied by a Skorch.
  • Signature Mon: He's the only keeper who uses a Skorch, and the only way to obtain one of your own is when he gives you an egg after defeating him in a duel for the last time.

    The Oracle

Alchemists

    In general

    Ostanes

Ostanes

The Earth Alchemist.

  • Dishing Out Dirt: As the Earth Alchemist, his team is comprised of monsters that can attack with Earth-elemental skills.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: You first encounter him in the Blue Caves, but he leaves you to deal with a Champion Minitaur. You don't learn about his name or motivation until you encounter him later in the Ancient Woods.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He can't comprehend the Keepers' habit of maintaining order and peace by befriending the monsters, and calls you a fool for believing in their ideals when they should be using the monsters to bring chaos and anarchy to the world.
  • For the Evulz: He is the most insane of the Alchemists, believing that the monsters are an instrument of chaos and considering the Keepers delusional for not thinking the same thing.
  • Plague Doctor: He wears a green cloak and a bird-like mask. Using his concoction, he transforms a Minitaur into a Champion monster and sets it loose in the Blue Caves.

    Vallalar

Vallalar

The Wind Alchemist.

  • Blow You Away: As the Wind Alchemist, his team is comprised of monsters that can attack with Wind-elemental skills.
  • Fat Bastard: His mask gives off an appearance of a fat man, even if his body appears identical to his fellow Alchemists.

    Zosimos

Zosimos

The Water Alchemist.

  • Graceful Loser: He sees being bested by the Keeper as a reason to respect them. The first time he's beaten, he gifts them a monster he recently stole from another Keeper in recognition of their victory.
  • Making a Splash: As the Water Alchemist, his team is comprised of monsters that can attack with Water-elemental skills.

    Rhazes

Rhazes

The Fire Alchemist.

  • Anti-Villain: Rhazes joined the Order of Alchemists because he thought alchemy had a lot of potential. He's only in it for the science and doesn't care at all about power or revenge against the Old World, and only fights the player because Marduk lied to him and told him the Keepers intended to genocide the Alchemists just like the Old World's forces did. He pulls a Heel–Face Turn once he realizes you're not out to kill him, and opens up a shop after the Magma Chamber is cleared.
  • Playing with Fire: As the Fire Alchemist, his team is comprised of monsters that can attack with Fire-elemental skills.

    Chymes

    Trevisan
  • Non-Action Guy: He doesn't keep tamed monsters or engage in monster fights, preferring to let others do the fighting for him and avoiding wild monsters with smoke bombs.
  • Token Good Teammate: He already had doubts about the alchemists and their master's motivations before meeting the Keeper. As such, he works with the Keeper and doesn't fight them.
  • The Unfought: The only member of the alchemists who is not fought in a Keeper duel.

    Marduk
The leader of the alchemists.
  • Big Bad: He's the leader of the Alchemists trying to steal the power of Spectral Familiars for themselves after being banished from the mainland, and whose presence is causing the powerful monsters to run wild.
  • Cartesian Karma: After defeating the final boss, Marduk accepts arrest for the crimes he committed while possessed by the Mad Lord, because he's not sure how much agency he had.
  • Deal with the Devil: He made one with the Mad Lord, ruler of all Mad Eyes, to gain his immortality.
  • Demonic Possession: Following his Deal with the Devil, Marduk became the host of the Mad Lord. When this is revealed, he states that he's not entirely sure how many of his following actions were his Master's will instead of his own.
  • Kill and Replace: Prior to the game's events, he killed Eric and stole his appearance.
