Main Characters

    Bambang

Bambang Soedarmo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mimpi_metropolitan_bambang_soedarmo.jpg
"My name is Bambang, Bambang Soedarmo. A good, nice and wise guy."
Played by: Madkucil

A young man who just comes from his hometown in Wonosari to the city of Jakarta. Upon arriving, Bambang befriends Alan and agrees to become his roommate. Bambang also falls in love with Melani, a friend of the dorm residents. Bambang's dream is to enter a university, improve his village and give his father's letter to Maudy Koesnaedi, or as they call her "Mba Zaenab".

  • Catchphrase:
    • "Kata bapak saya..." ("My father said..."). Used to Appeal to Familial Wisdom whenever Bambang advises someone. By episode 14, the others are tired of it, so Bambang turns it into a Mad Libs Catchphrase by replacing father with any equivalent phrase (e.g. "My mother's husband said...").
    • His go-to way to introduce himself: "Nama saya Bambang, Bambang Soedarmo" ("My name is Bambang, Bambang Soedarmo"), sometimes followed by "lelaki baik, ramah dan bijaksana" ("a good, nice and wise guy").
  • Character Development: Learns to become less jealous-prone after his jealousy-driven treatment of Melani in episode 43 drives her to tears. He has his lapse, but for the most part he becomes better at keeping his emotions in check.
  • Celebrity Is Overrated: After becoming viral for several episodes and gets to be a guest star on TV, Bambang comes to think that being famous is too tiring and confusing for him, not to mention having to lie for the sake of a TV show.
  • Country Mouse: He just comes to Jakarta in the first episode. A good chunk of his early story is spent adjusting to the city's norm.
  • Fictional Fan, Real Celebrity: Bambang and his father are fans of Maudy Koesnaedi, particularly her role as Zaenab in Si Doel Anak Sekolahan. One of Bambang's missions when he comes to Jakarta is to personally give his father's message to Maudy.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Downplayed. At the start of the series, he uses an old cellphone before realizing it makes him look out of place in Jakarta, so he buys a newer one. He's not used to his new phone at first and once has another person types for him. By the end of the series, he admits he still doesn't know much about computers and starts searching for a course for them.
  • Insecure Love Interest: During episode 60 and 61, the toll of people saying What Does She See in Him? convinces Bambang that he might be not fit to be Melani's boyfriend. He calms down slightly after Melani tells him that he should trust his girlfriend over those people.
  • Love at First Sight: Falls in love with Melani the moment he first meets her.
  • Younger Than They Look: Bambang is 19-turning-20. It's pointed out several times that Bambang looks much older than that. Bambang himself is aware that this trope applies to him.
    Alan

Penggalan Reformasi

Played by: Rifat Sungkar

A pirated DVD seller and a big fan of the Indonesian band Noah, particularly their vocalist Ariel. Alan went to Jakarta from Medan a year ago. Now, Alan is Bambang's first and best friend and falls in love with a female newcomer, Pipin. Alan has a big body and a loud voice and presents himself as a short-tempered guy, but he is ultimately nice and quick to back down against people louder than him (such as his landlady Mami Bibir).

    Prima

Prima Irama

Played by: Sakurta H. Ginting

"I, Prima Irama, will work hard like a horse, without forgetting the service of my parents. And I will have personality. [...] By personality, I mean personal car, personal house."

A soap opera extra, a paid audience member and an aspiring celebrity actor. Prima is Bambang and Alan's other best friend (and later roommate) and is the most experienced among the dorm resident when it comes to living in Jakarta. Prima usually works full-time as part of Bybyr Agency, which is owned by his landlady, Mami Bibir.

  • Big Brother Mentor: Being the most experienced makes him this to Bambang, especially in early episodes. Prima tells him about things about Jakarta he's not familiar with and gives him some motivational words when the pressure of living in Jakarta gets to him.
  • Butt-Monkey: Even if he is the one with the most stable job compared to Bambang and Alan, that job also causes him to get humiliating roles, such as a corpse falling from a shoulder-high bier. He also gets their typical money problems, such as being forced to run to a filming location by pure bad luck in episode 8.
  • Heavy Sleeper: In episode 38, Bambang says that Prima can't be waken up once he sleep comfortably. Bambang believes that Prima not waking up from all the noise in the beginning of episode 43 is another sign of this trope.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: "Prima" is taken from Indonesian actor Barry Prima while "Irama" is taken from Indonesian dangdut star Rhoma Irama. Prima says that his name is a prayer that he will become famous like them.
  • Waiting for a Break: Since the pay he gets from being an extra is not enough for his living, Prima works as motorcycle taxi driver. After he gets promoted to field coordinator in his agency, he slowly stops taking such side jobs.

    Melani

Melani Agustin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mimpi_metropolitan_melani_agustin.png
"What lasts forever is not beauty, but personality."
Played by: Faradilla Yoshi

A television creative who works at Hits TV. At the start of the series, Melani is already acquainted with Mami Bibir's dorm residents. When her dorm is renovated, she moves to Mami Bibir's house. Melani's dream is to continue her study abroad and become a creative director in Hits TV.

  • Big Eater: It's confined to episode 58, where (despite her slim body) Melani is said to eat the most among her friends. When she eats together with Bambang in a cafe, the amount of food Melani orders suprises Bambang.
  • Dude Magnet: Is acknowledged to be beautiful by other characters. Among the main characters alone, Bambang, Alexi and Juna are attracted to her.
  • Like Father, Like Son: On two separate occasions, Melani and her mother says that Melani got her hardheadedness from her father.
    Pipin

Pipin Komariah Husnawati

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mimpi_metropolitan_pipin.png
Played by: Rurin Nirmala

Melani: If you talk to Pipin, don't use difficult language.
Pipin: Mbak Mel, Mbak Mel, what kind of language is "difficult" language? Is that a trending language?

A newcomer who just comes to Jakarta to live with her aunt, Saodah. Pipin used to live with her family in Puncak before their house is ruined by a landslide. In Jakarta, Pipin starts out working as Mami Bibir's cleaning lady before taking a second job as gado-gado vendor. Pipin wants to earn enough money to repair her family's house. Pipin is not very bright and prone to misunderstand what her friends are saying.

  • Literal-Minded: Metaphors always go over her head.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Being a bumpkin, Pipin doesn't know a lot of pop cultural stuff, from international ones (the Oscars and Seven Wonders of the World) to national ones (Ade Rai and Yayan Ruhian). Expect confusion from Pipin whenever her friends talk about those stuff in front of her.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Pipin is prone to take Mami Bibir and Melani's snark at face value.
  • Third-Person Person: Usually refers to herself using her name, only using "saya" (Indonesian formal first-person pronoun) on a few occasions.
    Mami Bibir

Sofia Helena

Played by: TJ Ruth

"You know chili? [...] Mami Bibir's mouth is spicier than chili."
Alan

The dorm's landlady and owner of Bybyr Agency. Nicknamed "Mami Bibir" (lit. Lips Mom) for her big lips, she has been working on entertainment industry for some time and is currently running her own talent agency. A woman with a short temper, Mami Bibir is the one everybody in the dorm fears, especially Prima who is her employee in Bybyr Agency. But when hard time hits the kids, she really are their mom like her name implies.

  • Catchphrase: "What did you just say?!"Indonesian , usually spoken incredulously.
  • In-Series Nickname: She is usually called "Mami Bibir". People who don't call her such are either trying to be friendly or (consider themselves) her superior. For the first five episodes, the audience doesn't even know her real name.
  • My Nayme Is: Her nickname averts this as it is spelled the usual way of spelling bibir. Her agency name plays it straight by replacing every "i" with "y".

Later Additions

    Juna

Arjuna Renjana / Junedi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mimpi_metropolitan_juna.png

Played by: Harris Vriza

"Hi, guys. I'm Arjuna Renjana and usually called Juna, the most handsome person in the world. And do you know? I'm the actor with the most potential!"

A handsome extra from Cetar Agency whom Prima and Mami Bibir meet during Ada Azab Dalam Cerita filming. Unsatisfied with working at his original agency, Juna jumps ship to Mami Bibir's agency and moves to her dorm. Juna's handsomeness and acting skill also come with arrogance, causing enmity with Bambang, Alan and Prima.

  • Butt-Monkey: While he is introduced as a very lucky guy, his fortune starts dropping ever since the main trio finds out about his real name, leading him to become a recurring target of humiliation by them or by the plot, such as being forced to act while barefooted on a hot day or getting stuck in a pocong costume alone. Since he is a jerk when things goes his way, nobody minds.
  • The Casanova: A self-proclaimed one. Juna awes several women with his looks (including Pipin) and claims he has enough ex-girlfriends to make a football team (one of them appears and demands Juna repay the money he borrows from her).
  • Given Name Reveal: Episode 33 reveals that his real name is not Arjuna Renjana, but the less impressive Junedi.
  • Hometown Nickname: After Bambang, Alan and Prima find out about his real name and that he was born in Condet, they decide to nickname him "van Condet".
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Arrogant and condescending even towards people he calls friends, but Juna does genuinely care about them.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Tries to present himself as very knowledgeable, but to the audience and actually knowledgeable people like Melani, it's obvious that he makes stuff up more often than not.
  • The Rival: Introduced as Prima's rival for Mami Bibir's attention. Juna wants everything Prima wants and is better at getting them. After several episodes of jealousy, Prima comes to terms with Juna's relative success and accepts his position as Juna's assistant manager instead.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Mostly with Bambang and Alan. Most of their screentime with Juna are filled squabbles that rarely affects the plot.
  • Stage Name: After a talk with Mami Bibir, Juna decides to not get his real name legally changed to Arjuna Renjana, instead simply making it his stage name.
    Alexi

Alexander Xaverius

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mimpi_metropolitan_alexi.png
"Am I right? Am I right? Am I right?"

Played by: Juan Hadipoespito

"Becoming a celebrity is a side job for Lexi. My main job is actually being always handsome and spending Daddy's money that could lasts seven generations."

The host of Hits TV's Alexi Show. Alexi was born rich and went to entertainment industry to save himself from boredom. When Melani starts working on Alexi Show, Alexi falls in love with her which leads to Alexi spending a lot of time in the dorm. Alexi's quirky behaviour and pride in his high-class status frustrates everybody in the dorm more often than not, especially Bambang, but nobody can't deny that his money has its uses.

  • Catchphrase: "Am I right? Am I right? Am I right?"Indonesian , usually said at the end of a bad joke.
  • Characterization Marches On: In his early appearances, Alexi's quirk is that he is arrogant and unfunny, but is only a little overdramatic and for the most part he acts like a regular person. Once he becomes a regular, he gains a quirky speaking style that makes him a Large Ham and he becomes a Manchild whenever bad things happen to him.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Is prone to absurd ideas. Everybody has pretty much given up on trying to understand his thought process.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Everyone in the dorm find Alexi annoying to varying degrees,Elaboration  but they put up with him anyway since they can't get rid of him; he's a paying resident and a valuable celebrity for Bybyr Agency after all.
  • Hey, You!: His lack of respect for everyone besides Melani and Mami Bibir is emphasized by him not bothering to use their names.
    • Like everyone else, to Alexi, Bambang is an "ordinary person".
    • Alan's nickname just change from "ordinary person" to "Ariel's fan" when Alan works under him. Even then, Alexi still likes to use the wrong Ariel (Ariel Tatum instead of Ariel Noah). But for their goodbye, Alexi does call Alan with his full name.
    • Prima is an "ordinary person" to Alexi until Prima becomes Alexi's assistant manager.
    • Pipin is "Melani's friend", though Alexi is willing to change it to "Melani's friend whose name is Pipin" after Mami Bibir urges him to start using actual name.
    • Juna is only slightly different from everyone else by being called an "ordinary extra" instead.
  • Large Ham: When Alexi starts living in dorm, his speech becomes over-the-top. Due to his poor acting, his character in Ada Azab Dalam Cerita speaks exclusively in Large Ham.
  • Manchild: At times, Alexi will drop his suave demeanor and start whining and crying like a child when things don't go his way (e.g. when his mom wants him to star in a zombile film, when Akbar refuse to work with him again).
  • The Prima Donna: During his time starring Ada Azab Dalam Cerita, Alexi keeps making selfish demands and follows his own schedule, something Akbar only tolerates because his fame is good for ratings. After the more reasonable Juna becomes a co-star, it doesn't take long before Akbar fires Alexi.
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: Started out as a recurring character and Juan Hadipoespito wasn't listed in the credits. After episode 38, he becomes a regular, appears in every subsequent episodes and Juan Hadipoespito starts getting listed in the credits.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Has no actual talent in entertainment, be it being a host, comedian, or actor. Alexi himself believes he is very talented and often boasts about it, while in truth he only gets jobs because he happens to be handsome and famous.
  • So Unfunny, It's Funny: Unlike what he believes, Alexi is a terrible comedian. Half of the humor around him is watching him laughing alone at his own jokes while the other characters are confused.
  • Upper-Class Twit: Being born rich and used to get things his way makes him prone to make stupid or selfish decisions that the others barely tolerate. For example, in episode 38, he apparently believes that he is special because a phone credits seller asks for his phone number.

Other Dorm Residents

    Topan

Topan Aditya

Played by: Khaidir Kibo
An university student living in the dorm.
  • Recurring Character: Appears since the second episode and recurringly appears until the final episode. Early on, he usually just appears whenever a dorm resident outside of the main trio should appear. Later on, he has an episode centered around his bachelor's thesis and he appears more consistently after becoming Alan's co-worker in Alexi Project. Probably the most prominent recurrer given he gets to appear in the show's goodbye video.
    Rio and Adul
Two other dorm residents who are often seen together.
  • Karma Houdini: Alan and Prima's attempt to find them after they left the dorm is fruitless, allowing them to get away with running away and stealing Mami Bibir's furnitures.
  • Put on a Bus: Exits the show in episode 26, where they leave the dorm (Adul does it off-screen, Rio gets to say goodbye to Bambang and Alan).

Family Members

Bambang's family

    Trisno
Played by: Ence Bagus
Bambang's eccentric uncle from Wonosari who is also a famous selebgram.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: To Mami Bibir. He's not as attractive or suave as he thinks and following Mami Bibir around just makes her dislikes him more. It never stops him (except that one time he is terrified by Mami Bibir's magenta face).

Melani's family

    Lisa

Lisa

Played by: Ayu Azhari
Melani's mother. Unlike Melani, Lisa is somewhat more flighty and likes to mess with people, but is also warm and understanding.
  • The Gadfly: In her first scene, she tells Pipin multiple contradictory statements about herself just to mess with Pipin. It doesn't stop there.
  • Shipper on Deck: Implied in her first appearance, she enjoys Bambang's company and asks him to take care of Melani. When she returns later, Bambang and Melani has got together, and she is supportive of their relationship.

Pipin's family

    Saodah

Saodah

Played by: Nickma Fadhil
Pipin's aunt who lives in Jakarta. When Pipin's house in the village is damaged by a landslide, Pipin moves to Saodah's house.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Frequently acts antagonistic to Alan as she never likes the idea of Pipin getting together with Alan, either because she believes Alan is a playboy, is not a good husband material or sometimes she just distrusts Alan without explanation.

Ada Azab Dalam Cerita

    The director
The original director of Ada Azab Dalam Cerita. He was Akbar's superior before Akbar becomes the new director.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Granted, he barely appears in the show. During the whole time he appears or is mentioned, the other characters just call him "Pak Sutradara" (Indonesian for Mr. Director) or "Pak Sut" for short.
  • What Ever Happened To The Mouse: After Akbar becomes a recurring character and the person whom the main characters regularly interact with, the main director stops appearing, just being mentioned sometimes. And all of the sudden, Akbar gets promoted to director's chair.

    Clarabel
A lead actress of Ada Azab Dalam Cerita in the early episodes before her role is ended. Prima has an unrequited crush on her.
  • The Prima Donna: In her first appearance, she delays the filming because there's a clown (Prima in costume) on the location. When Akbar tries to persuade her to film, Clarabel refuses and asks for a drink instead.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She is afraid of clown and first meets Prima just when he happens to be wearing a clown costume and makeup, which scares her away.

    Yayan Ruhian

Yayan Ruhian

Played by: Yayan Ruhian
The famous martial artist and actor who guest stars in one of Ada Azab Dalam Cerita episode.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: At first appears to be just another guest star. In episode 60, Akbar reveals that Yayan watched Prima's video that Akbar reposted which leads to Prima being hired and leaving the dorm.
  • Special Guest: In the middle of episode 50, he shows up and uses his martial arts skill to save Pipin from premans. Then it turns out he is also an in-universe example, as he films a scene for AADC where he shows up and uses his martial arts skill to save an ustad from premans.

Hits TV

Outdoor Chef

    Chef MSG

Miko Setia Gutama

The chef of the cooking show Outdoor Chef where Melani works.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: It's hard to tell whether he is this or just Lethal Chef considering we never get to see his regular cooking. Not that he would make regular cooking since he insists on making weird food that make everyone (including himself) vomits after eating them.
  • Punny Name: Miko Setia Gutama, which clearly just exists so people can call him "MSG" (the flavor enhancer). He doesn't seem to mind though.

Other Characters

    Nancy
Played by: Yati Surachman
An old woman who turns out to be a retired boxer. Nancy's daughter hears that Bambang has taken care of an old person before and pays him to take care of Nancy for a few days in episode 13. She returns in episode 53 to say goodbye as she is going to move to Netherlands, conveniently allowing her house to be bought by Alexi.
  • Cool Old Lady: Even though she can be rough and forcing, Nancy is also a fun person, especially in Bambang's third day with her, and gives Bambang and his friends a free washing machine. When Nancy returns, she defends Alan from Saodah's badmouthing when Saodah doesn't know Alan's full situation.
  • Never Mess with Granny: A retired boxer who still trains her body today. While downplayed as she needs to be in a wheelchair sometimes, she is still fit enough to force Bambang to sit in her wheelchair and push him around.
    Yola

Yola

A friend of Niken (Topan's friend in the university) who pays Prima to be her boyfriend at the graduation. But it turns out, she wants something more serious than just a boyfriend.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Since she is convinced that no man would want her because of her unattractiveness, Yola willingly becomes this trope, spending a whole day waiting for Prima in front of his dorm even though it is obvious that Prima doesn't like her. Mami Bibir and Melani tells Yola that No Guy Wants to Be Chased, she just makes Prima more afraid of her and she should try to attract man with a good personality instead.
    Rike

Rike

Played by: Maya Wulan
A watchwoman and the instructor for Bambang and Alan's watchmen training.
  • Actor Allusion: Her name is likely one to Maya Wulan's role in another NET.—Limelight Pictures sitcom, Kelas Internasional, where she played Rika.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Downplayed. She yells at the watchmen-in-training a lot, insists that she is always right, and increases punishment for those who talk back. She does have a heart as shown when Bambang needs to visit his father and calls out Bobby and Bedu for laughing at Alan's punishment.
