Michiko Malandro
Michiko Malandro
Voiced by: Yoko Maki, Rina Hidaka (young) (Japanese), Monica Rial (English)
A convict who fled from prison in search for Hatchin. Her motives as to why she abducted Hana are connected to her father Hiroshi Morenos.
- Action Girl: She can kick butt either with her fists or scooter.
- Alliterative Name: Michiko Malandro.
- Amusing Injuries: When dealing against the police force, Michiko holds her own really well. Against her foster mother, she loses, even if she's already a grown-up.
- Angry Collar Grab: Does this with Elis after finding out that Hiroshi had been sleeping with her.
- Badass Biker: In a world where the the police tend to be crooked and most towns are ruled by the cartel, it is fitting that the heroine would be able to save the day on her scooter. Michiko even kicks off the series by pulling Hatchin out of her hellish foster family by crashing through the window with her damn scooter. As the series goes on, it's shown that this isn't a one-time thing as Michiko continues to take out mobsters, high-end hitmen, and dirty cops with the tricks she can pull on her scooter.
- Barehanded Blade Block: In the bullfight episode, against The Mafiya leader.
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Subverted as Michiko is often shown battered, with bruises, cuts, and scrapes from her fights.
- Berserk Button:
- The song the little kids at her orphanage made of her due to a Potty Failure incident.
- Finding out that Hiroshi had other relationships sends her into a rage.
- Beware the Silly Ones: As childish as she can be, Michiko is not someone to underestimate; she's a gun-toting woman who managed to escape from prison, even destroying a helicopter with just a gun.
- Book Dumb: She's not really sharp when it comes to doubting fantasy stuff, struggles with simple subtraction, and (judging by a note she wrote to her former caretaker) never learned to properly read and write. All that being said, Michiko is a highly tactical fighter who can swiftly take out a squad of armed officers without a weapon.
- Bratty Half-Pint: As a child, she was always a huge pain in the butt to her foster mother and once tried to make off with the money gotten from selling children.
- Character Development: Her growing bond with Hatchin allows her to gradually lose a lot of the selfishness and recklessness she had at the beginning.
- Childhood Friends: With Atsuko as they grew up in the same poor orphanage.
- Combat Pragmatist: As one would expect from a woman with the determination to break out of the country's most secure prison, Michiko will do anything it takes to win. This can be seen frequently with the amount of Groin Attacks she uses against enemies and is while she won't physically harm bystanders, she's not above taking hostages as leverage.
- Combat Stilettos: Even high heels don't stop her from being a Kick Chick.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Immature and flighty, but someone who can take a massive amount of punishment and still kick ass.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Raised in an orphanage by an abusive caretaker got involved in organized crime, and was sent to jail after having a child young, with a man who's no longer around.
- Determinator:
- When trying to save Hatchin from a corrupt circus which sells children into slavery, Michiko pursues them even as they attempt to escape in a hot air balloon in a coastal rainstorm. Michiko is so devoted to getting Hatchin back that she climbs the rope in the storm, shrugging off multiple tranquilizer bullets and still refusing to let go. It's not until Hatchin has subdued her kidnappers that Michiko finally lets go.
- She nearly fell off from the end of an iron beam multiple stories high by being completely bound and tied to Nei Feng-Yi. She hangs onto the edge of the beam and uses her teeth to hold him from falling down to his death. Even the guys who had kidnapped her were utterly speechless when she managed to pull Nei back in time.
- Even getting shot at by the cops in a commandeered car doesn't stop her, as she just plows right through their barricade to get to Hatchin after she gets taken by Satoshi.
- Dude Magnet: Many men have noted Michiko's good looks; she's frequently hit on, often in the middle of her trying to accomplish something else. There have been times where she enjoys the attention. Other times, however, she seems to be annoyed.
- Even the Girls Want Her: The first time they meet, Elis gives Michiko a huge kiss and gropes her. There's also the implications that Atsuko has romantic feelings for her.
- Everyone Has Standards: In spite of her negative traits, she's pissed when Hatchin's foster father tries to murder his foster daughter just to get the money from her death.
- Groin Attack: Used rather liberally whenever male law officials are taking her on (i.e. pretty much every officer who's not Atsuko). She only tends to use it as a pragmatic defense tactic, which it is, rather than just to be malicious.
- Hair-Contrast Duo: She, the rebellious ne'er do-well, has dark hair, while her law-abiding, Morality Pet daughter Hatchin has dirty blonde hair.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: Not only is she ready to throw punches and yell at people over the slightest upset, it's anyone's guess what will set her off on any given day.
- Horrible Judge of Character: Despite several clues that Hiroshi is not the thoughtful and good person she thinks he is, Michiko still believes he's still in love with her. Most of the other characters see right through him.
- Hot-Blooded: Takes a very impulsive approach to just about everything she does. Before knowing anything about Hatchin's foster family she decides the best way to enter would be by crashing her scooter through the window.
- Hypocrite: Goes into a ballistic rage when she finds out that Hiroshi had been in a relationship with Elis, but tried to justify her having an affair with a married man.
- I Shall Return: She willingly turns herself to the police after delivering Hatchin to Hiroshi, but she promises that they will meet again someday. In the end, they do.
- The Illegible: Everything handwritten by Michiko is messy and full of spelling mistakes, which may be because, what with being an orphan, she never got a real education.
- It's All About Me: She is accused by several side characters of only taking Hatchin with her as a device to get close to Hiroshi, which she angrily denies. Eventually, she accepts that part of her wants to be with Hiroshi, but that she is also reuniting the daughter and father for the girl's sake. In the finale, she subverts this and goes back to prison, letting Hiroshi and Hatchin fly off to their new life together.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's violent and can be emotionally abusive, but she really does love Hatchin.
- Kick The Son Of A Bitch:
- Instead of shooting Hatchin's Jerkass foster father, she humiliates him by making him run away and crash down on a pool table.
- Even when she suffered from a fever and couldn't tell all the crap she put Hatchin through, she literally kicked the unlicensed doctor that had supposedly cursed her before Hatchin could beat him with a pipe.
- Love at First Sight: With Hiroshi when they were teenagers. She was so dazzled by his good looks that she forgot about being held at gunpoint and topless.
- Mama Bear: In spite of her frequent angry outbursts at Hatchin, Michiko genuinely cares for the young girl and will do anything to ensure her safety. In the finale, when the duo are faced down with an squad of armed officers, she decimates the enemy with nothing but her body to defend Hatchin, as soon as the threat of bringing harm to her young companion is brought up.
- Manchild: Michiko's childish ways of handling things is one of the main reasons she and Hatchin don't initially get along. Her behavior throughout the series often leaves Hatchin in the lurch, and resentful that her mother-figure doesn't do a better job taking care of her. By the end of the series, she's matured somewhat, even willingly going back to finish her prison sentence once she believes Hatchin is safe under Hiroshi's care.
- Meaningful Name: A common translation for Michiko's name is "child of the road." She and Hatchin spend the series on the run. Her last name, "Malandro", is Spanish and Portuguese for "rascal" or "scoundrel". Accordingly, she grew up a delinquent who has now racked up enough legal trouble to be marked a felon and chased by cops across the country.
- Missing Mom: It's somewhat hinted that Michiko is Hana's missing mother, with Michiko actually referring to her as her daughter when she goes to get her from her foster family, but this is never brought up again (and ultimately, the truth about Hana's mother never comes to light).
- Mistaken for Prostitute: In episode 15, a man believes that Michiko is a prostitute because of her skimpy clothing. He then asks her how much she wants. Michiko simply ignores him.
- Ms. Fanservice: She's tall, thin, and curvy. Even with an Unlimited Wardrobe, her outfits often bare her cleavage, navel and legs, or barely cover her butt. There are even scenes of her topless (with Scenery Censor).
- Mugged for Disguise: In one episode, Michiko mugs a matador for his outfit in order to rescue Hatchin.
- Mushroom Samba: The fever she was suffering from, combined with the healthy diet of cigarettes and alcohol she fed herself while sick, ended up putting her into a hallucinogenic trance.
- Navel-Deep Neckline: Her skimpy clothing frequently features plunging necklines. As such, she's constantly hit on by men.
- Now That's Using Your Teeth!: Michiko does this in order to save Nei's life.
- Parent-Child Team: Whether Hatchin is Michiko's blood daughter or just found family, they operate like this.
- Parental Abandonment: Grew up in an orphanage/group home alongside Atsuko; her parents are never mentioned and viewers never learn how she ended up there.
- Parental Substitute: Michiko becomes a mother/Cool Aunt figure for Hatchin. Even after being reunited with her birth father, Hatchin prefers to be with Michiko.
- Parents as People: Michiko is now taking care of a child, and she still lacks emotional maturity, as well as being selfish and reckless because that's how she always was.
- Pinky Swear: Offers one to Hatchin in the last episode to promise her surrendering herself to the cops isn't goodbye forever.
- Potty Failure: One of Michiko's worst Berserk Buttons is a little song that kids at the orphanage made up after she had an accident.
- Sassy Black Woman: In the dub at least. Because she's in a fictional interpretation of Latin America, this isn't too out of place.
- Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Zigzagged. She is deeply in love with Hiroshi who she claims a "good man", however, the ending reveals Hiroshi is a Jerk with a Heart of Jerk. Lovestruck Michiko genuinely believes Hiroshi is a good man, and loves him because she doesn't see his faults.
- Snark-to-Snark Combat: Notably with Atsuko, but Michiko is ready to whip out the snark with just about anyone, even her maybe-daughter, Hatchin.
- Spicy Latina: Michiko takes the roll of the sexy Latina character with a headstrong, impulsive attitude and a tough-seeming but ultimately sweet lady in this series. This can be seen from the outfits she wears, the amount of ass she kicks, and the way she treats Hatchin.
- Stripperiffic: Most anything Michiko wears, which might not be the smartest move when you're on the run and want to avert attention.
- Take My Hand!: Michiko does this to Hatchin several times in the series.
- Terrible Artist: Just like Luffy, she doesn't even realize she can't draw at all.
- Tranquillizer Dart: Subverted. Michiko appears to be very resilient when hit by a dart from a tranquilizer gun. Twice.
- Tsundere: It's pretty hard to tell how much she likes Hatchin. Michiko vows that she will always keep her safe. Outside of that, the two always clash when Michiko's polarizing behavior comes to light.
- The Unreveal: Although she intimidates Hatchin's foster family by saying she is Hatchin's mother, it is never given any more attention and ultimately left ambiguous as to who Hatchin's birth mother is.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Because of her actions against Fantasma, Satoshi was able to launch his assault on Monstro Preto, eventually taking control and becoming the Big Bad.
- Villain Protagonist: To Atsuko's Hero Antagonist; not to imply that she's evil or that her story arc isn't sympathetic, but she is a wanted criminal actively evading her capture by the police, and chaotically tearing her way through every obstacle standing between her and her happiness.
- Volleying Insults: Has an exchange like this with Atsuko in episode 2 when surrounded by cops. When Atsuko hits an old nerve, Michiko almost tanks herself, but she still manages to get the better of Atsuko in the end.
- Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Plays the older but less responsible character, trying to steal whenever she needs and throwing violent temper tantrums, to Hatchin's younger but more rational and clear-minded approach to problem solving.
- With My Hands Tied: Michiko is able to rescue Nei while they're tied up with her teeth.

A young nine (later ten) year old girl living with a hellish foster family until her life changes (for better or worse) once Michiko comes into the picture. Her father is Hiroshi Morenos, a thief whom Michiko apparently dated and was loyal to.
- Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Often feels this way about Michiko, especially when Michiko is being particularly crass, ditzy, or talking about sex and romance.
- Attractive Bent-Gender: A young girl name Rita once referred to Hatchin as her boyfriend, and almost kissed Hatchin, whose short hair and boyish clothes made Rita mistake her for a boy.
- Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: In the finale, after Michiko leaves Hatchin with Hiroshi and goes off to complete her prison time lawfully, Hatchin breaks down in tears, screaming for Michiko to come back. Despite all her irritation with her often immature and thoughtless mother-figure, Hatchin has truly grown to love her and doesn't want to be without her.
- Babies Ever After: In the Distant Finale, she had a baby with someone who ditched them after three months.
- Badass Adorable: At least after being taken by Michiko, Hatchin is a pretty good example. While she can often be overshadowed by Michiko in terms of badassness, Hatchin is nothing to sneeze at. Case in point, she knocked two adults unconscious by kicking the fat circus lady in her face.
- Barefoot Poverty: Hatchin briefly does a self-imposed version of this in "Like a Frantic Pinball," when she refuses to wear a pair of stolen shoes until she can properly pay for them.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Despite her mature and generally kindhearted personality, if you do push Hatchin too far, prepare for a tongue-lashing of epic proportions.
- Born Unlucky: A lot of bad things happen to her, even outside her foster home. She gets injured, emotionally scarred, conned, threatened with death, almost sold through child slavery, mistreated by adults with rotten personalities, kidnapped, yelled at and slapped by Michiko on one of her many bad days, left at a car repair shop to massage an old man's back...
- Boyish Short Hair: So much after she cuts it short that she's often mistaken for a boy. In the Distant Finale, she has even shorter hair.
- Brain Bleach: Hatchin's reaction whenever Michiko starts talking about sex.
- Broken Pedestal: Done rather subtly, but over the course of the series, Hatchin goes from having a desire to meet her father to slowly losing all interest as she starts to put the pieces together over what type of man he really is. She ends up becoming confused why both Michiko and later Satoshi hold him in such high regard. And by the end, after finally being reunited with Hiroshi, she's more devastated that it came at the price of Michiko getting sent back to jail. Then he flat-out abandons her to run off with a new girlfriend.
- Character Development: She becomes braver and more outspoken thanks to Michiko's influence.
- The Cynic: Doesn't really believe in tales like the Virgin Mary statue crying blood, or the claims of the fortune-teller that Michiko employs in episode 3.
- Damsel in Distress: Gets kidnapped once by Fantasma's henchmen, though she easily makes a getaway out of sheer luck. Later on, Satoshi takes her away in order to find Hiroshi.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Spent the first ten years of her life being emotionally and physically abused by her foster family.
- Did You Think I Can't Feel?: Hatchin does this to Maria when she finally snaps at her.
- Do Not Call Me "Paul": Prefers to not be referred to by her birth name, "Hana"—unless she's been fighting with Michiko, and then she'll asked to be called Hana rather than her nickname, Hatchin.
- Drunk on Milk: One episode shows her getting completely smashed on juice. Michiko lampshades it:Michiko: Are you actually getting drunk off of orange juice?
- Embarrassing Tattoo: The tattoo on her belly is something she doesn't like to talk about, though it's proof that she's Hiroshi's daughter.
- Extreme Doormat: To her abusive foster family, until she beats up her siblings in defiance.
- Foil: The youthful, mature, realistic Hatchin is in direct contrast with her childish, feckless adult mother Michiko.
- Freak Out: In Episode 7, combined shortly after with Took a Level in Badass.
- Free-Range Children: Michiko often sends Hatchin out to do errands, or simply runs off to chase a thread, leaving Hatchin alone in the middle of a city. When Michiko gets sick, Hatchin—a ten-year-old girl—goes out and gets a job working security on a farm to try to make money for a doctor.
- Gender Reveal: When Rita goes in for a kiss, Hatchin jerks back and explains that she's not the boy Rita mistook her for, but a girl. Rita shrugs it off and they become friends anyway.
- Good Parents: Becomes this to her baby in the Distant Finale; she would spend her off days with them.
- Grew a Spine: A lot of Hatchin's character development revolves around her becoming more self-confident and assertive with how she feels. The first episode shows the start of this when she physically fights back against Maria after years of abuse from her foster family.

- I Am Not My Father: Unlike Hiroshi, who vanishes out of Hatchin's life again a few months after their reunion, Hatchin is determined to be a good mother to her baby.
- I Choose to Stay: She wanted to live her life with the Circus de Chocolate, until the point where she realized her superiors wanted to sell the talent-less circus children for money.
- Important Haircut: She cuts her pigtails in episode 3 to look a little tougher.
- Ironic Name: Her surname, Morenos, means "dark-skinned ones" or "dark-haired ones" in Portuguese and Spanish, contrasting with Hatchin's pale skin and blonde hair.
- Lady Looks Like a Dude: Is mistaken for a boy by several characters throughout the series, due to her androgynous appearance once she cuts off her pigtails and ditches her dress.
- Like Parent, Unlike Child: Hatchin, aside from her strong physical resemblance to Hiroshi, is not very much like either of her parents. She has none of Michiko's gung-ho, It's All About Me attitude, and certainly none of her father's Jerkass tendencies. Rather, she appears to have gotten Michiko's determination and made up the rest herself.
- Little Miss Badass: Hatchin evolves over the story into a more mundane-than-average version of this. At one point near the climax, she faced off with a former gang lord; throwing rocks at the guy with a high-powered handgun.
- Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: A rare gender swapped version. There's little doubt that Hiroshi is Hatchin's father, what with their physical resemblance, and the fact that she bears the same stomach tattoo as Hiroshi's baby, but the series leaves it ambiguous about whether Michiko is really Hatchin's mother, or if she's picked up one of Hiroshi's kids by another woman. There's also the question of whether or not the dates of Hatchin's birth and Michiko's prison time match up to allow that Michiko could be her mother.
- Meaningful Rename: Given how her birth name was a reminder of her abusive home life, she wanted to change it. Michiko (impulsively) gives her iconic nickname.
- Memento MacGuffin: Hatchin's tattoo on her stomach, which is the same as Michiko's.
- Morality Pet: Constantly arguing against Michiko's illegal and/or immoral actions, which Michiko views as necessary to survive. Hana would rather put herself through more hardship or inconvenience than put it on others to make her life easier. Case and point: Going barefoot until she earns the money to pay for stolen shoes.
- Nice Girl: She's more polite and level-headed than Michiko and often thinks about the feelings of other people.
- Orphanage of Fear: Everyone in her foster family was a huge asshole to her.
- Orphan's Plot Trinket: The tattoo on Hatchin's stomach that marks her as Hiroshi's daughter.
- Parent-Child Team: Whether Hatchin is Michiko's blood daughter or just found family, they operate like this.
- Perpetual Frowner: Is rarely seen smiling. Michiko lampshades it by saying that she has dreamed where the two of them and Hiroshi will live happily together, with Hatchin continuing to be somewhat grumpy but saying that's just in her nature.
- Rich Sibling, Poor Sibling: Her foster siblings were treated well, while she was not.
- She Is All Grown Up: In the Distant Finale. She even had a baby who looks just like her except with black skin.
- Shorter Means Smarter: The short, child-aged Hatchin is considerably more rational and observant than the hot-headed, impulsive Michiko, who is a tall adult.
- Step Servant: Hatchin's situation in the first episode is awful. Her foster family, who primarily took her in for the money, treat her as a servant rather than as a daughter and bully her constantly, and when Michiko kidnaps her, the father tries to collect on the insurance money and shoot her.
- Strong Family Resemblance: After she cuts her pigtails, she greatly resembled Hiroshi in his youth, except he had a more boyish nose. One of Hiroshi's crime companions even recognizes her because she looks so much like him. Elis also figures out that Hatchin is Hiroshi's daughter just by looking at her.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Zigzagged. She's the quiet, polite, cooking Girly Girl who often wears boyish clothing to Michiko's gun-toting, punching, vulgar Tomboy who often wears feminine clothing.
- Took a Level in Badass: Hana becomes more of a badass after going on the run with Michiko. Case in point, she eventually even gets willing to tussle with the police despite their guns, just like Michiko. And when She Is All Grown Up in the finale, she handily demonstrates that she's both a great single parent and even uses great analysis and topography skills to figure out Michiko was coming to meet her and where at. She even gets a trucker she hitchhikes with to let her borrow his truck just for the occasion, seemingly through kind words alone.
- Took a Level in Cheerfulness: She becomes more open and happy when traveling with Michiko.
- Tsundere:
- Extremely tsun-tsun whenever Lenine tries to do some romantic advances on her, though Hatchin's reactions are not because she returns his feelings, but because she really doesn't know how she's supposed to respond.
- She can get this way when Michiko is trying to mother her, but that may be partly because Michiko's attempts at motherly behavior come off so unnaturally.
- Wacky Parent, Serious Child: The serious child to Michiko's wacky parent. Hatchin is often the one to point out that Michiko's plans make no sense, or that someone's trying to swindle them, while Michiko is far more gullible and doesn't think things through very far.

The Belenbauza Yamada family, who "raised" Hatchin for eight or so years. Father: Pedro, Mother: Joanna, Sister: Maria, Brother: Gabriel.
- Abusive Parents: Pedro and Joanna make Hatchin do all the housework in their home, and openly discuss that the government stipend they get for her child care is the only reason they care for her.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Maria and Gabriel are nothing but snot-nosed brats who relish in tormenting their adoptive sister. Gabriel throws rocks at Hatchin and rides her like a pony, tying a rope around her neck to choke her when she slows down. They also tried to burn her with an iron, which proves to be the final straw for her.
- Dirty Coward: They enjoy picking on the defenseless Hatchin but easily cower and piss themselves when stood up to, with Maria and Pedro being the prime examples.
- Fostering for Profit: As aforementioned, this was the reason Hatchin lived with them.
- Four Eyes, Zero Soul: All of them are nasty, awful people who wear glasses.
- Jerkass: The entire family. Maria and Gabriel are straight-up abusive to Hatchin, while the parents do nothing, and work Hatchin like a slave, making her cook and clean for the entire family.
- Hate Sink: Both Pedro and Joanna are shown to be horrible parents, and Hatchin's adoptive siblings are no better in their treatment of her.
- Kick the Dog: All of them do petty, spiteful things to Hatchin just because they want to:
- Maria steals Hatchin's clothes while she's in the shower and then cuts off the water, sprays her with cleaning fluid, and kicks her down the stairs.
- Gabriel taunts and throws things at her regularly.
- During the breakfast scene, after Joanna discovers that Hatchin had burned the underside of the omelette she had cooked for her, her response is to dump her entire plate, omelette and all, right onto the floor before then ordering the poor girl to not only cook her another omelette, but also clean up the mess that Joanna has just made.
- Once Michiko has abducted Hatchin, and Pedro realizes he's going to lose her child support, he decides to collect on her life insurance and tries to shoot her.
- Parental Favoritism: Pedro and Joanna dote on their biological kids, while treating Hatchin like a servant.
- Pet the Dog: Briefly. The nicest thing Pedro does for Hatchin is give her a notebook to draw in after one of his sermons.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Pedro sees himself as a holy man handpicked by God when he's really a prick hiding behind a religion he doesn't actually believe in. He claims to have reformed a notorious local criminal into a man who wouldn't hurt a fly—which is true mainly because the man took a bullet to the brain and is now in a vegetative state—and he naturally assumes that Michiko took Hatchin as an attack on him.
- Spoiled Brat: Maria and Gabriel are spoiled to the core and get away with bullying Hatchin.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Their fates after episode 2 is unknown.
- Would Hurt a Child: Pedro was willing to kill Hatchin for the insurance money.

A detective who's been hot on Michiko's trail since some time ago.
- Action Girl: Only female cop on the force from what is shown, and definitely not afraid to get her hands dirty chasing down Michiko or taking down other suspects.
- Ambiguously Gay: It's heavily implied that Atsuko may have romantic feelings for Michiko, despite being tasked with bringing her in. In one particular episode, Michiko implies that as a child, Atsuko would become aroused whenever Michiko would beat her up.

- Butt-Monkey: She has shades of this in her pursuit of Michiko. Despite supposedly being a competent officer, Michiko defeats and humiliates Atsuko every chance she gets, ultimately going back to prison only because she turns herself in.

- Dirty Cop: Is striking deals with the Monstro Preto gang on the side.
- Double Agent: She has been known for working for the police and striking deals with Monstro Preto from behind the scenes, though she's ultimately working for the police.

- Hero Antagonist: She opposes Michiko and seeks to bring her to justice, but she only does it out of a sense of duty to uphold the law and protect the people. On a personal level, she also bears Michiko no ill will and just does her job.
- Inelegant Blubbering: Played for drama. After Hatchin is kidnapped by Satoshi, Atsuko breaks down in tears once her feelings for Michiko reach a boiling point when she lets Michiko escape to pursue him, after declaring "From now on, we're strangers".
- Noodle Incident: Just as how she has embarrassing childhood memories of Michiko, Michiko has some about her.
- Parental Abandonment: Grew up in an orphanage/group home alongside Michiko; her parents are never mentioned and viewers never learn how she ended up there.
- Snark-to-Snark Combat: Notably with Michiko. The way they trade insults suggests they used to be Vitriolic Best Buds before life took them down opposing paths.
- Sympathetic Inspector Antagonist: For the most part, Atsuko's just trying to do her job—and Michiko's been on these escapes before. She knows her quarry well and that helps her in figuring out Michiko's logic. She even allows Michiko to go free in one instance, in order for Michiko to rescue Hatchin from Satoshi.
- Volleying Insults: Has an exchange like this with Michiko in episode 2 when she has the latter surrounded by cops. When Atsuko hits an old nerve, Michiko almost tanks herself, but she still manages to get the better of Atsuko in the end.
Hiroshi Morenos

A renowned criminal whom Michiko apparently dated and respected a lot. He is the assumed father of Hatchin.
- Disappeared Dad: Believed to have died in a truck explosion accident, but Michiko thinks otherwise. Upon finally meeting Hatchin and promising to bond with her, he runs off again with a new girlfriend.
- Flashback: He appears only in flashbacks until the end of the series.
- Gangbangers: Was Satoshi's second-in-command for an unspecified amount of time before quitting the gang—directly after which Satoshi sent him on a fool's errand and he, shockingly, ended up dead by bus explosion. Supposedly, but Michiko is sure he is alive, and he is.
- Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Lots of people have lots of good things to say about Hiroshi throughout the course of the series, and when we finally see him in the last episode, he claims to be enthusiastic about taking care of Hatchin after Michiko leaves her in his custody. He runs off with another woman soon after and leaves his daughter to fend for herself.
- Parental Abandonment: When he and Hatchin finally reunite and he promises that their bond will be repaired, he leaves her for the next woman he met.
- Parents as People: Deconstructed. Yes, he may have promised to rebuild the bond between him and Hatchin, but he's also prone to ditching people on the fly. Which comes up again after he leaves his daughter to fend for herself to chase after another woman.
- Posthumous Character: He's missing and presumed dead, but Michiko insists he's alive. She's right.
- Really Gets Around: It's been hinted many times that Hiroshi liked women and had sex a lot after he met Michiko. And then he ditches Hana for another woman in the finale.
- Strong Family Resemblance: Hatchin is the small, female version of her dad, Hiroshi.
- Train-Station Goodbye: Participates in one during the last episode.
Satoshi Batista

The main antagonist, a former friend of Hiroshi who took over his crime syndicate Monstro Preto. He blames Michiko for Hiroshi's betrayal and wants to kill her.
- Affably Evil: Shows a friendlier side to those close to him, like Hiroshi, whom he speaks of like a brother and later to Hatchin when they briefly travel together and whose safety he watches out for, despite finding her irritant.
- Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Satoshi got to be where he is now by ruthlessly removing any obstacle to him taking power. Shinsuke learns this the hard way when he brings a group of Mooks to kill Satoshi, whose combat abilities allow him to decimate Shinsuke's forces and easily execute his former subordinate.
- Berserk Button: Any real or perceived slights to his authority are liable to set Satoshi off. When Shinsuke protests against being given "grunt work", Satsoshi snaps back "I'm the boss!" And when a bartender reveals drugs are being sold on Monstro's turf by someone else, Satoshi abruptly smashes his mug, mutilates the man's face, and shoots him dead after interrogating him.
- Big Bad: Although the plot is driven by Michiko and Hatchin's struggle to find Hiroshi, Satoshi is the leader of the biggest gang that opposes them. His obsession with killing Michiko, combined with his vast connections, establishes him as their biggest obstacle.
- Bring Me My Brown Pants: As a child, a crime boss threatening to shoot him unless Satoshi could make him laugh led to the young boy wetting himself in fear. This humiliation leads Satoshi to take revenge on the (later reformed) criminal and his family.
- Defiant to the End: Vows that he is going to kill the gangsters who are about to shoot him right before he dies.
- The Dreaded: His reputation has grown so much that messing with his crew means certain death. His faker learns this the hard way.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Or, had loved ones. He genuinely valued his friendship with Hiroshi when they were younger, and continues to think fondly of him long after the latter disappears. He also used to be much closer to Shinsuke, and still expresses some remorse upon killing him.
- Even Evil Has Standards: When Satoshi makes a deal with Hatchin to take her with him if she brings him to Hiroshi, she makes him promise not to try to kill Michiko and Satoshi forgoes a chance to shoot his hated enemy dead to keep his word.
- Four Eyes, Zero Soul: A brutal, pitiless crime lord who wears Cool Shades.
- From Nobody to Nightmare: As a thuggish kid, he was often on the wrong end and nearly died, if it weren't for Hiroshi. Once grown up, he has become the most dangerous person in South America.
- Gangbangers: Leader of the gang Monstro Preto, which he took over after killing all previous higher-ups.
- Horrible Judge of Character: Satoshi, just like Michiko, is guilty of this concerning Hiroshi. Even Hatchin, who's never met Hiroshi up to that point, is able to get his personality better than his former best friend.
- Irony: For all his talks of despising Michiko and wanting to kill her, he acts a lot like her. During the brief period he kidnaps Hatchin, their dynamic is very similar to how antagonistic Hatchin's dynamic used to be with Michiko. He even remembers Hiroshi fondly just like Michiko does; and treats Hatchin like a Replacement Goldfish.
- Karmic Death: Gets tortured and killed by a mobster that he previous tormented but gave Cruel Mercy. This is similar to what he did with Manabe.
- Manipulative Bastard: He tracks down Manabe, a former thug who tortured him as a child, and finds out that he has raised a family. Satoshi then threatens Manabe, his wife, and his young son to listen to his demands to bring Michiko to him. By the time all is over, Satoshi kills the wife and the kid, and humiliates Manabe by watching him lose it before shooting him.
- Noble Demon: Satoshi is a monstrous crime lord who will even kill the families of people who have wronged him, but he values loyalty and the friendships he's made and despite his rage with Shinsuke for going against him, ultimately feels remorse for killing him.
- Pay Evil unto Evil: He pays back Manabe, who brutally mistreated him as a child, by doing the exact same things to him as an adult. However, while he had some right to pay back to Manabe, Satoshi goes the extra mile and murders his innocent family. Satoshi himself falls victim to this from a mobster he tortured.
- Pet the Dog: As monstrous as he may be, he could have treated Hatchin a lot worse than he did during the brief time they were together. Even when she refuses to tell him where Hiroshi is, he doesn't even get upset.
- Politically Incorrect Villain: In addition to being a ruthless crime lord, he also refers to a group of Asian gangsters he's about to engage in combat with as, "Goddamn Peking Ducks".
- Scary Black Man: Less tall than most examples, but still rather big, and definitely imposing, seeing as how he rules the biggest, most dangerous gang in the country.
- Slasher Smile: Sports one at times, such as just after running over Shinsuke with his car.
- Taking the Bullet: When Hatchin gets herself in the line of sight of a sniper firing at her and Satoshi to call to Michiko, Satoshi jumps in the path of the bullet, saving her life.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Flashbacks reveal that this extremely dangerous, ruthless, and cunning man was once a scared, all-talk-no-bark thug.
- Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Major one in episode 19, after his drink was spiked with an unknown drug.
- Would Hit a Girl: Besides trying numerous times to kill Michiko, Satoshi also murdered Manabe's wife.
- Would Hurt a Child: Zigzagged. He murders Manabe's young son without any issue. Later on, he is very rough with Hatchin, pushes her around, points a gun at her and kicks her in the stomach when he gets annoyed by her. She probably would have gotten worse if she didn't remind Satoshi of Hiroshi.
Shinsuke Saci Rodriguez

Satoshi's general right-hand man within Monstro Preto, and a sadistic nut who likes to toy with people.
- Big Bad Wannabe: He really wants to take over the gang from Satoshi, and basically does near the end, but he is still no match for Satoshi, who kills all his men before executing him via drowning him in a bucket.
- Dirty Coward:
- He happily betrays Satoshi, hoping Michiko will kill him. However, as soon as it backfires, he freaks out when Satoshi makes it clear he's coming for him, going so far as to try and meet his former boss for a simple apology, as though it will fix everything.
- His ambition once again gets the better of him and he gives another crack at killing Satoshi, but his men are consistently taken out and Satoshi eventually gets Shinsuke himself at gun point, where Shinsuke once again tries pleading for mercy.
- The Dragon: He acted as one to Satoshi in the past, leading much of his forces during their village massacre and even stands by him, making (insane) suggestions on how to kill a target. This doesn't last long in the present day, as Shinsuke's ambitions lead him to betray his boss in his very first episode and they spend the rest of the series at odds with each other.
- Faux Affably Evil: Shinsuke remains sickeningly gleeful even while announcing his cruel game to Michiko to kill off the members of the fake Satoshi's gang if they fail to follow his instructions and jovially suggests to Satoshi they "test" a rival gangster by sticking his head in a bucket of water for 10 minutes rather than just shooting him.
- Gangbangers: Works for Satoshi and the gang Monstro Preto.
- Gonk: He looks pretty freaky in comparison to many other characters, as can be seen above. Being hit by a car only makes it worse.
- Karmic Death: Some time ago, he and Satoshi killed a guy by restraining him and making him go without air for ten minutes. Years later, Satoshi kills Shinsuke in the same manner. This is especially ironic because, while they were watching the man die, he'd claimed that he could have gone the whole ten minutes, and Satoshi even agreed. Turns out they were both wrong.
- Laughably Evil: Monstrous as he may be, Shinsuke is so hilariously out of his depths and childishly ecstatic about being evil that he comes across as funny. A highlight is when he cowardly avoids talking to Satoshi after trying to have him killed and claims he couldn't come to the phone because he was taking a shit.
- Looks Like Cesare: Due to his design.
- More Despicable Minion: He is a vicious gangster under Satoshi but lacks any of his boss' nobility, charm, or intelligence while being even more violent, always coming up with sadistic games to execute his targets. After betraying Satoshi, Shinsuke spends the rest of the series cowardly running for his life and when finally drawn out by Satoshi, has his men easily dispatched and pathetically dies crying and begging for his life.
- Non-Standard Character Design: As aforementioned, he's downright weird looking compared to the other characters, probably more so than the other Gonks we did see.
- Psycho for Hire: He's a gangster for profit but the cruelty he takes to his job shows his real passion is the chance to hurt people.
- Sadist: Shinsuke delights in seeing other's suffer, as demonstrated by his suggestion to Satoshi to execute a captive by suffocating him, saying they'll let him go if he can survive for ten minutes, as opposed to just shooting the poor bastard.
- The Starscream: He wants to kill Satoshi and take control of Monstro. It doesn't work...
- Villains Want Mercy: For all of his atrocious acts, Shinsuke cries and begs for Satoshi to spare him for his treason.

Pepe does everything she can to take them both out of poverty, including getting Lulu to steal Michiko's ID so they can afford to leave town. When this fails, Pepe desperately attempts to steal money from her boss...
- Acrofatic: Lulu can dance and jump high just like her older sister.
- Big Sister Instinct: Everything Pepe does is to provide Lulu with a better life.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Pepe tries to run over Michiko just because she made fun of Pepe's job while drunk.
- Face Death with Dignity: When Pepe is cornered by three of Rico's children henchmen, she accepts her fate, steps out of the taxi to allow the driver to escape and stands with her head high in front of the children, who promptly shot her to death.
- Fallen Princess: Both sisters, as they started off wealthy but then their dad died and people came to collect what was owed for any debts during his life, landing the two in poverty and leading for Pepe to strip, along with being entangled up with Rico.
- Freudian Excuse: Pepe and Lulu lost their family and home and were forced to live in the favela with very little money and no one to care about them other than each other, which made them quite ruthless and have to resort to steal in order to survive.
- Inferiority Superiority Complex: Pepe acts invincible and carries herself with a self-important air, but when the crap hits the fan, she breaks down begging for help, and accuses people of being too good for a woman of her standing.
- Justified Criminal: Pepe and Lulu dine-and-dash to survive and try to steal IDs from Michiko to leave the favela but they can't as Pepe has little to no money due to Rico keeping nearly all of her earnings.
- Killed Off for Real: Pepe unfortunately meets her demise when she tries to go back for Lulu at the hideout, only to be shot by Rico's children henchmen on the way there.
- Killed Offscreen: It isn't shown what happened to her, but Lulu was presumably killed by Rico's children henchmen after she tries to go back for her picture needed for a fake ID passport.
- Never My Fault: When she realizes Lulu is not coming back after trying to retrieve a photo Pepe prefers to blame Michiko for not having any I.D.s rather than take responsibility for ther own actions.
- Promoted to Parent: Pepe, after her father's death and their mother abandoning them.
- Riches to Rags: They used to be part of the upper class until their father died and both were tossed out to the streets.
- Single Mom Stripper: Pepe works as an exotic dancer to support herself and her kid sister.
- The Unreveal: Pepe claims that she knew Hiroshi, but never provides any specifics. The audience never learns if she was telling the truth, although she was most likely lying in order to lure Michiko to Rumba's and steal her IDs.

- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She tends to masquerade as a caring orphanage matron, but she is the opposite.
- Child Hater: She states that she never did like running the orphanage too much.
- Fostering for Profit: Sells the kids in the orphanage off for money; Michiko comes close to figuring this out as a child and tries to call her on it.
- It's All About Me: She has some shades of this.
- Karma Houdini: It's unclear if she had got any retribution for selling the kids.
- Lady Drunk: She loves her booze and her cigarettes.
- May–December Romance: She is in love with a local bullfighter who is much younger than her.
- Never Mess with Granny: Michiko may be a grown up now, but Zelia can still kick her ass around in defense.
- Orphanage of Fear: Not entirely fear per se, however, the orphanage she runs does sell kids that they find to be no longer useful.

A bar owner and friend to Michiko. He eventually helps Michiko rescue Hatchin.
- Camp Gay: The way he dresses and his overall demeanor, as well as his friend that seems to be his lover, all indicate that he is this.
- Nice Guy: Probably one of the overall kindest and most helpful characters in the show, being not only willing to keep quiet about Michiko being in town, but helping to sneak her into the base of one of her enemies to rescue Hatchin after Michiko merely apologizes to him.
Rita Ozzetti

A ten year old traveling circus performer who quickly develops a true bond with Hatchin. She is really infatuated with her adult circus partner Gino and wishes to grow up soon enough to tie the knot with him, though her love for him is sadly one-sided.
- Berserk Button: In Episode 9 she could get furious if someone even implied that she could never get Gino to fall in love with her. She gets over it though.
- Bratty Half-Pint: She could be quite bratty when Gino didn't do as she said, got boys to fall in love with them (to make Gino jealous) and then dumped them, not caring that she broke Massan's heart, or if someone told her she cannot be with him but she's a Nice Girl very much, especially when Gino is not then topic of any conversation and after she gets over the fact that was going to leave and cannot be with her.
- Circus Brat: She's an acrobat by trade, doing aerial stunts while Gino and his motorcycle serve as her counterweight.
- Foil: Hatchin and Rita make a healthy friendship bond at a young age, contrast the abusive one between Michiko and Atsuko, and somewhat in contrast to Michiko's own relationship with Hatchin. Additionally, Rita is very feminine while Hatchin is a tomboy.
- Doorstop Baby: She was abandoned at the circus' Big Top's entrance upon birth.
- Everything's Sparkly with Jewelry: She always wears a lot of jewelry. Even when performing she still wears earrings and at least two bracelets.
- The Fashionista: Has a strong sense of fashion.
- Green-Eyed Monster: A lot of the tension between the two is how Gino is in love with someone his age, which makes Rita act harsh around him. She also tries to hopelessly hook up with other men to make Gino jealous to no avail.
- Hollywood Kiss: Tries to pull this off with Hatchin, until Hatchin backs off and reveals to the oblivious Rita that she was not a boy.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Thanks to Hatchin, Rita finally learns that she should just enjoy her free life and wait for her true love to appear when she's older.
- The Idealist: Genuinely seems to believe that she and Gino, a grown man, can have a happy romance, despite his obvious interest in women his own age.
- Locked Out of the Loop: She didn't seem to know that her circus troupe secretly sold children, though this may have started once Gino disbanded to be with his girlfriend. She was also not chosen to be sold due to her circus talent.
- Parental Abandonment: She was left at the circus' steps when she was born, and since then she was picked up by the circus troupe.
- Precocious Crush: Rita's crush on the adult Gino.
- Put on a Bus: After the Circo de Chocolate gets closed down for selling children, Rita seemingly disappears to unknown places, though not without saying good bye to Hatchin.

- Crazy Jealous Guy: If he sees Rita showing interest in a boy, Massan will insult them and later threaten them with violence if they don't leave Rita alone as seen when he tried this on Hatchin until she revealed that she was actually a girl.
- Knight in Shining Armor: He believes himself to be this and that he has to rescue Rita.
- Put on a Bus: It is unknown what became of Massan after the Circo de Chocolate gets closed down for selling children and Rita is presumably taken away by the police with the other children.
- Stalker with a Crush: He ran away from home to follow the Circo De Chocolate, tries to follow Rita everywhere she goes and kept tabs on Gino, Rita's crush, Gino's girlfriend, and tries to scare away any boys Rita shows interest in.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: It is unknown what happened to him after the circus closed down and Rita left.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He was one of the boys Rita flirted with to get Gino's attention, when it didn't work she dumped him and avoids him unless she needs something such as his bike.

- Fan Disservice: Even after her weight gain, she continues to dress in skimpy outfits even though she clearly doesn't have the body or age for it.
- The Fashionista: Like Rita, she has a strong sense of fashion.
- Fat Bastard: She is so obese she barely fits into her trailer and has no qualms on selling children into slavery or killing people.
- I Was Quite a Looker: She was a really beautiful woman until she became morbidly obese.
- Manipulative Bitch: She acts nice and caring to the children she plans to sell in order to earn their trust and sell them.

- Determinator: To a suicidal degree. She is absolutely hell-bent on finding the ancient artifact her father had been searching for, even when she and Atsuko are lost in an underground temple full of noxious fumes. Atsuko has to knock her unconscious to get her out.
- Identical Stranger: Except for the bob haircut and lighter skin, Vanessa is a near carbon copy of Michiko.
- Ms. Fanservice: She's just barely old enough to pull this off. Most of her intimate scenes have her topless.
- Two First Names: Either "Vanessa" or "Lee" can be used as a first name.

- Adorably Precocious Child: Lenine is quite mature for his age.

- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The name Lenine is this, but it's because of his amnesia induced by being struck hard on the head by debris.
- Hopeless Suitor: Hatchin recognizes that Lenine is a good guy, but she's not emotionally ready to be in love.
- Love at First Sight: He believes Hatchin is an angel waiting to love him.
- Nice Guy: A kind, thoughtful young man.
- Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Lenine is not even his real name. It was just a name people called him after he lost his memories by being struck on the head by debris during an explosion in an old building.

- Have I Mentioned I Am Sexually Active Today?: Her introduction is almost comprised of her acting really sexually with flashbacks of Hiroshi up to meeting Michiko. She then kisses Michiko in an intimate way.
- Pet the Dog: Michiko comes in essentially prepared to fight Elis over Hiroshi, but instead Elis tells her what she can, and helps Michiko and Hatchin escape when Atsuko and the cops catch up to them. She goes as far as sabotaging police efforts to capture Michiko by messing with the building's electronic systems.

A cross-dressing widower whom Hatchin meets.
- Alcoholic Parent: What he was before his wife died. Afterwards, he straightened up to take care of their son.
- Ambiguously Gay: Averted. He's a famous dan (actor known for playing women), but his son Bebel exclaims he's not gay.
- Foil: To Hiroshi. They both were irresponsible fathers to their only child, with the mother of their child being gone for some reason (the identity of Hatchin's birth mother is left a mystery and Bebel's mother died). However, Nei completely changes after his wife's death to take care of Bebel; Hiroshi leaves Hatchin to chase another woman, forcing her to fend for herself, even though he initially claimed he was happy to be a father.
- Friend to All Children: He was willing to help Hatchin even though he just met her.
- Good Parents: He is completely devoted to Bebel.
- Nice Guy: Nei is one the nicest guys in the entire series.
- Open-Minded Parent: He shows no problem with his son crossdressing.
- Papa Wolf: Since his wife left the two of them, Nei stopped being a hopeless drunk and started to pull his weight around to raise Bebel. He also tried to make sure Hatchin wasn't wandering around a really sketchy neighborhood.
- Real Men Wear Pink: Nei is a famous crossdresser.
- Wholesome Crossdresser: And a famous one at that. He's a Chinese dan performer whose skill is admired even by other men. And he goes far out of his way to try to rescue Michiko and get her back to Hatchin, even putting his own life on the line.
Bebel Feng-Yi

Son of Nei Feng-Yi. He looks up to his father so much that he's not shy about being a cross-dresser at a very young age.
- Dude Looks Like a Lady: His father loosely looks like a man in a drag, but Bebel sure is more convincing in this aspect at first glance.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: His real attitude is almost as bad as Hatchin's foster siblings. Unfortunately for him, Hatchin already became a Badass Adorable and easily subdues him after putting up with his behavior. The "heart of gold" aspect comes from Bebel's admiration of his father and his encouragement and reassurance to Hatchin when Nei goes out to look for the kidnapped Michiko.
- Real Men Wear Pink: Bebel has no qualms about crossdressing in a frilly, pink dress.
- Sweet Polly Oliver: His Establishing Character Moment involved acting like a very sweet girl. It's not until Nei leaves the house when Hatchin discovers how much of a Jerkass he really is and even gets to see his family jewels.
- Wholesome Crossdresser: He has no problem with it because his father is one as well.

An old business associate and famous soap opera actor who knew Hiroshi.
- Foil: To Hiroshi, interestingly enough, as Hiroshi is rather subdued, while Feliciano is pretty hammy, on top of the fact that, from what we've seen Hiroshi is something of a jerkass, while this guy is pretty nice and mindful of other people.
- Identical Stranger: Looks a hell lot like a slightly younger version of Hiroshi.
- Large Ham: He is so into his acting that he pulls out all the stops to be this.
- Nice Character, Mean Actor: What he comes across to Hatchin, until she subdues him.
- Nice Guy: After being confronted by Hatchin, it turns out that he's this. He even willingly helps her by cheering Michiko up. And this is after Hatchin broke through his window, tackled him, and slapped him after chasing him through the city.
