Royal Court of Aragon

    The Queen

Queen Doña Isabella

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d4dfa2c2_ba75_4bdd_a775_22ed6a8bc6ca.jpeg
An actress portraying the Queen.

The current protagonist since 2018.

    The King

The King of Aragon

The protagonist up until 2018.
  • Adaptation Name Change: His name varies through the eras.
    • In 2000, his name was Alfonso.
    • In 2006, his name was Phillipe.
    • In 2012, his name was Don Carlos.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a usually friendly king, but he doesn't back down from declaring the villain shall be broken upon the wheel, if it's decided they will be executed.
  • Bus Crash: Queen Isabella states in the beginning of the 2018 show that she inherited the crown from her late father.
  • The Good King: He's known to be this.
  • Red Is Heroic: The color of his tunic is mahogany.

    The Princess

The Princess of Aragon

The daughter of the king/queen.
  • Adapted Out: Safe to assume her role is replaced with the queen in the 2018 era.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Her official name changes with eras.
    • In 2000, her name was Esperanza.
    • In 2006, her name was Leonore.
    • In 2012, her name was Catalina.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: The 2006 show is the only instance where she is not blood-related to the king. Instead, she is his daughter-in-law (being married to the prince).
  • Damsel in Distress: The victor knight fights the Herald to keep him from taking the princess to the North Kingdom to marry his king.
  • Happily Married: With Prince Tristan, the 2006 incarnation of the prince.
  • The Heart: Her role was to represent the "romance" of the medieval era.
  • Meaningful Name: "Esperanza", her name in the 2000 era, means "hope".
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Wears an elegant one, often with a cape. The color changes with each era.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Was the only female main character.

    The Prince

The Prince of Aragon

The son of the king.

    Lord Chancellor

Lord Chancellor

One of the crown's loyal subjects and the main narrator.
  • Character Narrator: He acts as the MC of the show.
  • No Name Given: He's never given a proper name.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: His tunics don't represent any of the flags of the Realm. His 2006 design, on the other hand, combines all the symbols and colors of the knights together.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Judging by his similar costume and the sword holstered into his belt, the Chancellor is also a knight. But we never see him partake in the battles.

    The Black Knight

Lord Marshall

One of the crown's loyal knights.
  • Adapted Out: Has been absent since the implementation of the 2006 show.
  • Evil Counterpart: To the Red Knight; they're first cousins, wear the same colors, and are both hotblooded right-hand men to the King.
  • Hidden Villain: He was the one who killed the king's brother, assuming he'd be the King's natural choice for next-in-line.
  • No Name Given: Like the Lord Chancellor, he's only ever referred to by his title.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Although he's a knight, he does not participate in the battles except for the final battle, which he fights against the champion knight.

Knights of the Realm

    General
The six champion knights loyal to the king of Aragon.
  • Animal Motifs: Some tunics of the knights incorporate these.
  • Badass Cape: They wear capes in their colors and patterns. They're taken off during the fights for convenience.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: What happens to the losing knights after they leave the stage is not known except that they come home with honor lost.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: The knights of the West are Red, Black and White, and Yellow. The knights of the East are Green, Red and Yellow, and Blue.
  • Flanderization: 2012 show onwards, the knights' distinct traits become less apparent. The backstories boast their skills and battle feats more, and there's less focus on their distinct traits (ex: Black and White Knight’s distanced personality, Green Knight's cockiness).
  • Foil: The personalities of the knights contrast with their rival. Yellow rivals Blue, Black and White rivals Red and Yellow, and Red rivals Green.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Anytime the knights are together and are doing anything but dueling.
  • Good Versus Good: The knights — all unambiguously good (except the Green Knight in the 2006 show and the traitor in Sovereign) — compete against one another over the course of The Tourney.
  • Headbutting Heroes: The knights are always seen fighting each other, however in some backstories of the shows they have fought alongside each other.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Downplayed; they use all sorts of weapons when fighting on foot, but most often use swords.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: The reason the Red Knight and the Red and Yellow Knight are the most featured in advertisements is because Red Is Heroic.
  • Mr. Fanservice: The actors playing the knights are handsome, and they toss flowers to a couple of women in the audience during the show.
  • Sir Verb-a-Lot: Notably averted. The knights' names are derived from names of European origin, primarily Spanish. The knight titles are "Don", "Lord" and "Baron", but never "Sir".
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The queen/king is the main protagonist, but the knights and their duels are heavily advertised.
  • The Squire: Each knight is accompanied by a group of squires, who act as stage hands. Two squires help the winning knight in the final battle against the show’s villain.

    The Yellow Knight of Navarre

Don Eduardo del Rey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0f618d57_7bed_44db_b501_9c848a9a99f9.jpeg
An actor portraying the Yellow Knight in the 2012 era.
"In defense of Navarre, Don Eduardo del Rey is the rock. Nay, he is the legend. He is well-versed in the arts of chivalry, yet in attack, he is the lion uncaged! Let the ring of steel herald his arrival and the smoke of battle linger in his wake, for a legend of the Realm walks among us."

The defender of Navarre. The captain of the knights and described to be "very Spanish".

  • Animal Motifs: His symbol changes with each era.
    • 2000 show: Lions.
    • 2006 show: Horses.
    • 2012 show: Wolves.
    • 2018 show: Bulls.
  • Foil: He is the captain of the knights, which contrasts with the young Blue Knight, his rival.
  • The Leader: Of the knights. His 2000 era theme is even titled “The Captain”. However in recent shows he has been phased out of this position.
  • Meaningful Name: The captain of the knights' last name translates to "Of the King".
  • Warrior Poet: In the 2000 era, he's described as "a troubadour at heart".

    The Blue Knight of Valiente

Don Alberto del Mau

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/28e0451c_397f_43a5_83a9_9fc0bed9756b.jpeg
An actor portraying the Blue Knight in the 2012 era.
"As a young squire, Don Alberto del Mau earned his place among the Knights of the Realm in a desperate battle. He struck the enemy and rallied the faithful. Renowned as a champion of the defenseless, his blood will not be cooled, nor his vengeance postponed, for those who bring war and unquiet to Valiente."

The defender of Valiente. The youngest knight.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: He's the youngest of the knights, and in some shows the youngest/newest of all knights in service to the crown.
  • Color Contrast: In advertising he’s sometimes featured with the Red Knight.
  • Fleur-de-lis: His symbol, which stands out in the medieval Spain setting.
  • Foil:
    • He's the youngest (and in some cases a squire), and his rival is the Yellow Knight, the Captain.
    • In an old educational workbook from a pre-2000 era, he's described as the newly-promoted former squire of the Yellow Knight himself — which exacerbates their rivalry.
  • Hot-Blooded: It's said that hot blood runs in his veins.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Some sources call him a squire. This would make him equal to the Valiente squires who accompany him in the show, but he’s as respected as the other Knights of the Realm. He’s also competent enough to participate in the tournament.
    • In the 2000 era, he's described as a squire who was knighted on the field of the battle that serves as the tournament's prologue - he's only just recently become a knight, chronologically.
    • The 2012 era details in his backstory he was a squire who championed his way into becoming a knight.
  • Meaningful Name: "Mau" is also a nickname derived from "Mao", which can mean "young boy".
  • The Squire: He's sometimes referred to as a squire.

The Black and White Knight of Santiago de Compostela

Don Iofre Santa Creu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/28415d43_f961_4a0b_ae1c_f723944a8e2c.jpeg
An actor portraying the Black and White Knight in the 2012 era.
"Behold! Don Iofre Santa Creu — defender of the ancient shrine at Santiago de Compostela. Adorned in Black and White, he is mightiest in skill among an order of warrior priests whose arrival upon the field brings despair to the impure of heart. In prayer, humble. In service, loyal. In battle, invincible!"

The defender of Santiago de Compostela. A warrior priest.

The Red and Yellow Knight of Perelada

Lord del Font

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f288831d_9e64_463a_9f4b_95f05dc09e13.jpeg
An actor portraying the Red and Yellow Knight in the 2012 era.
"Lord del Font — champion to the Count of Perelada! Undefeated, unleashed and unafraid. The sword of this invincible soldier has raised him to fame. Defeat and regret have been the reward of the countless challengers who have offered their honor and their shields to the point of his lance."

The defender of Perelada. The Count of Perelada's champion knight who’s a bit full of himself.

  • Animal Motifs: Eagles.
  • Foil: He's fun, confident, and his rival is the warrior priest Black and White Knight.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Like the Black and White Knight, he's themed after two colors.
  • Only One Name: "Del Font", which is likely to be his surname, is the only given part of his name.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He's got quite the confidence.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Out of all the knights, he is the most featured in promotions alongside the Red Knight. He even appears in some versions of the logo. The Perelada colors also get copious amounts of attention, to the point the Crown of Aragon’s actual colors gets overshadowed.
  • World's Best Warrior: He's the Count of Perelada's personal champion and is the best jouster.

    The Red Knight of Castilla

Baron Ruiz de Roig

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d2f86af0_4660_4901_9331_0c3451cf1f48.jpeg
An actor portraying the Red Knight in the 2012 era.
"Truest son of mighty Castilla, Baron Ruiz de Roche has been called the "lion's heart" in many a battle. Set him at liberty, and he'll paralyze the enemy! With little pleasure will the ambitious look upon the banner of Castilla hanging in the list. The lion roars in victory and reigns supreme."

The defender of Castilla. The "lion's heart" and a hot-blooded warrior.

  • Animal Motifs: Lions. He's even called the "lion's heart".
  • Color Contrast: In advertising he’s sometimes featured with the Blue Knight.
  • Foil: He's far more fitting of the archetypal hero traits than his rival, the Green Knight.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's vigorous and tempestuous as well.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • "De Roig" means "of red".
    • "De Roche" means "of stone".
  • Red Is Heroic: Plays this straight.
  • Spell My Name With An S: His real surname in official material is written inconsistently. Some write it as "de Roig" or "de Roche".
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Out of all the knights, he is the most featured in promotions alongside the Red and Yellow Knight.

    The Green Knight of León

Don Temple

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eab4ce15_008d_41ed_a1c4_b7a2db8910cf.jpeg
An actor portraying the Green Knight in the 2012 era.
"A monument stands upon a hill in Leone honoring one man. It bears his name, carved in stone. No warrior of that mighty realm shall ever die deedless thanks to him. The bravest of the brave. The Champion of Leone."

The defender of León. A mercenary loyal to whoever pays him, and has the temper of a "dragon's claw".

Cedric the Sorcerer

The wise sorcerer.
