    Mayans - Santo Padre Charter

Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes

Portrayed By: J. D. Pardo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/45462851_4e37_4706_878c_1d1b55f47a6c.jpeg

Once a "golden boy" with a bright future ahead of him, he loses it all when he accidentally murders a cop while chasing his mother's murderer. Years later, he gets out of jail due to a deal with the DEA and seeks a membership among the Mayans MC.

  • Accidental Murder: The truth of the crime he was imprisoned for and it’s constantly a reminder of how his old life is gone.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Is called Boy Scout by Coco and Angel.
  • Anti-Hero: He's working to bring down the Galindo Cartel, but to remain undercover, he has to do very unsavoury things. The entire reason he's involved in the first place is due to his own criminal behavior.
  • Badass Biker: It's a Given, let's face it.
  • Becoming the Mask: He joined the Mayans in order to fulfill his role in the DEA deal, but being a prospect grew on him and he ended up wanting the full patch. At the end of Season Two he gets it.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: To Emily pre-series when he's in prison, which he regrets immediately.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Besides being the antiheroic protagonist with a beard, being in a vigilante biker gang and their devotion to their family. EZ and Jax Teller come from drastically different backgrounds. Jax was the heir to SAMCRO’s legacy and had devoted his entire life to the club. Meanwhile EZ at first only joined the club as part of his role as an informant for the DEA and had a prospective life. Jax was a mostly non-academic bad boy who "only knew outlaw", whereas EZ was a promising athlete attending university with a bright future. We're introduced to Jax as the Vice-President of the Sons and a vital member integral to most of their actions. We're introduced to EZ as a Mayans prospect far from the Experienced Protagonist Jax was and definitely not as privy to the MC's actions.
  • Cop Killer: He ended up in prison for accidentally killing a police officer whilst chasing his mother’s killer and Potter particularly enjoys reminding EZ of his status as one by blackmailing him into doing it again.
  • Cultured Badass: EZ might be an ex-con biker, but he also went to Stanford and enjoys books of poetry, he also knows Latin.
  • Genius Bruiser: His athleticism gives him an edge despite him being far from as experienced a fighter as other members of the club are, and he has quite a high I.Q.
  • My Greatest Failure: How EZ views his Accidental Murder as stated above. This lead to him losing almost everything: his girlfriend, his future, a potential child and his freedom.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: Gives one to Angel to justify why he deserves to patch into the Mayans and why he asked Bishop to be his sponsor instead of him.
  • Photographic Memory: A vital character trait; his ability to spot and retain information comes in handy multiple times: in his role as an informant, when the club needs information and in uncovering clues on his mother’s murder.
  • Rank Up:He gets his full patch at the end of Season 2.
  • The Mole: For the DEA.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Just like Jax.

El Presidente of Mayans MC’s Santo Padre Charter and Marcus Alvarez’s cousin.
  • The Leader: Runs the Santo Padre Charter with much loyalty from his men.
  • The Mentor: To EZ in Season Two.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While he would punch EZ for speaking when he's not allowed to and berates him for being impulsive (even though he's actually proud of him), he also became EZ's sponsor instead of Angel and counsels him to make amends to Angel if he's to get an unanimous vote for his full patch.
  • Revenge Before Reason: He was torn at first about having to make a decision between retaliate or not against the Vatos Malditos. After some council from Alvarez and some pressure from the other two kings, he eventually chooses to retaliate covertly.
  • You Are in Command Now: Subverted. When Alvarez left the Mayans, he split his power between the charters of Santo Padre, Stockton and Yuma, making Bishop one of the "Three Kings". However Alvarez states that he is head of the table between the three.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: He patched the Vatos Malditos in the past, but was forced to leave them and flee to the US after Palo took over as the VM president.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Downplayed. He did kill Riz, but not because he changed his alliance to another club, but to make the retaliation against the Vatos Malditos possible, and presumably because an undisclosed personal reason that involves Palo and the VM.
  • Gayngster: He is revealed to be gay but very few people know about it because he has been chaste since the love of his life was murdered many years ago.

  • Butt-Monkey: He gets a lot of punishment, even before being shot by the Vatos Malditos and his subsequent death at the hands of Taza.
  • Character Death: Taza smothers him to death in the hospital.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Lampshaded by Taza and Bishop.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: A variant. He was around for almost two seasons, but his lack of characterization aside from his tunnel to make some side money made him basically a generic Mayan member, not so different from Quinn and West from the Sons of Anarchy.

Neron ”Creeper” Vargas

  • Faux Affably Evil: He makes a show of being polite and soft-spoken, but still slips in a nasty joke as he coldly has an enemy dismembered.
  • Hated by All: Miguel doesn't have much in the way of friends in Season One. Marcus Alvarez, who he considers a friend, has little respect for him. The rest of the Mayans thoroughly despise him because they feel disrespected, and an entire criminal organization has been built for the sole purpose of destroying his cartel...and several of the Mayans he uses as muscle are in on it.
  • Love Is a Weakness: Is encouraged to think this way by his own mother, who tells him the horrifying story that his infant brother was kidnapped by a rival cartel and his father chose to let the child die rather than give in. A few months later, they were pregnant with Miguel. She tells him this to persuade him not to save his own son who's been kidnapped by rebels.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Refers to the Mexicans suffering under the cartel's thumb as "greasy fucking peasants". In Season Two after developing a partnership with Los Olvidados he begins to change this.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: His immaculate dress sense makes him stand out as a man of power among the Mayans.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After striking a deal with Adelita in order to gain an alliance between the Galindo Cartel and Los Olvidados.

  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: She believes Cristobal's kidnapping is her punishment for having an abortion to spite EZ.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: She's the first to understand the rebels' tactics and present a way to dismantle their favorable public image. Unfortunately, she underestimates the ruthlessness of the cartel's own methods.

    Reyes Family

Felipe Reyes

Portrayed By: Edward James Olmos

The once strong Mexican patriarch of the Reyes family as well as Angel and EZ's father.

  • Badass Decay: In-Universe. Dita points out that, while Ignacio Cortina could kill her, Felipe Reyes couldn't.
  • Cool Old Guy: Largely due to being played by Edward James Olmos.
  • Dirty Cop: Subverted. He wasn't dirty for personal gain, but it was safer to be in Jose Galindo's payroll.
  • Papa Wolf: Subtly threatens Jimenez by mentioning the rips he spines out of cows.
  • Retired Badass/Retired Monster: Was once a Mexican Federale and describes compares his past self to an animal..
