Characters / Marenian Tavern Story: Patty and the Hungry God

Go To

The Leads

    Patricia "Patty" Maggioni
The game's main character. A kind, driven, and surprisingly fearless young woman with a serious knack for cooking. After her father loses his legendary restaurant to the God of Poverty's curse, she decides to open her own restaurant to earn enough money to buy it back.

As a combatant, she uses short swords and bows, and does a little bit of everything. She gets access to a wide range of low-level elemental spells, several healing skills, and some of the best support skills in the game.

  • Action Girl: An unusual case. She herself doesn't really think of herself as a combatant, and when she goes adventuring to collect ingredients, it's framed as her more powerful friends acting as her bodyguards while she gets what she needs. However, she's perfectly capable of defending herself, and she can hold her own in a fight.
  • Almighty Janitor: Despite being just a simple tavern keeper, she ends up carving a mighty swathe through the world's most dangerous monsters all in the name of getting ingredients for her inn. Lampshaded by the chief of the dwarves, who wonders what the heck a girl like her is doing working as a cook of all things.
  • All-Loving Hero: A big part of her characterization is that she helps others see the good in their own lives. She's also the only one of the main characters to really tolerate Coco. She argues that he doesn't mean to cause them harm with his blessings, he just can't do anything else for them.
  • The Bartender: Whenever her friends come to her with a problem while she's working, she lends them a friendly ear and offers them advice while she serves them.
  • Daddy's Girl: Loves her father dearly, and she's determined to save his tavern and find out what happened to him.
  • Does Not Like Spam: The item description for Octopus notes that she doesn't like it and finds it unpleasantly squishy. However, she still happily uses it in her dishes for the tavern.
  • Even the Girls Want Her:
    • She gets hit on by a female sailor in Casanavi, who asks her to go get a few drinks with her. After Patty's flustered reaction tells her she's barking up the wrong tree, she apologizes and gives you the recipe for lassi (treating Patty to a drink in a different fashion).
    • Later, a drunken Bellatina demands Patty give her a kiss. She goes in for it before falling fast asleep at Patty's feet, because she Can't Hold Her Liquor.
  • The Heart: Patty sees the absolute best in everyone, Coco included, and is very good at pointing out to others why they're special and valuable. She also never thinks less of anyone for going against the grain, like Varl and his love of sweets, or Bellatina and her departure from her species' norms. She helps the others keep their spirits up, and is well-loved by others for it.
  • Healer Signs On Early: Her first abilities are healing skills.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Either Dante, Elias, or Varl will start developing feelings for her after she picks one to be her fake boyfriend. When they bring her flowers, she asks why in perfect innocence, and their heart is broken when they realize how Oblivious to Love she is.
  • Jack of All Stats: She has average stats all across the board, as befitting your first party member, and learns a spread of basic-but-useful physical abilities, magic spells, and healing abilities.
  • Lady of War: She becomes quite competent in battle, but never drops her kind and hospitable image.
  • Nice Girl: She's sweet and friendly to everyone. Given that she works in hospitality, being nice is part of the job description.
  • Oblivious to Love: After picking a tavern employee to be her fake boyfriend, the person she chooses is implied to develop feelings for her. They present her with a bouquet of flowers, but she doesn't understand why and innocently breaks their heart.
  • Plucky Girl: As soon as her family loses all their fortunes, she comes up with a plan to get them back, and she works at it tirelessly.
  • Signature Move: Two of them. The first, God of Poverty's Power, is a field move that increases the encounter rate. The second, Punishment!, is a powerful single-hit physical attack.
  • Support Party Member: Though she learns all kinds of skills, she gets several of the best support skills in the game, and is able to increase the entire party's defensive stats, physical attack, and speed.
  • Supreme Chef: Her father was an excellent chef before her, and she's picked up his skills. The game's dishes cover a huge range of types, from salads to roasts to stews to desserts, and she prepares them all with ease.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pudding, according to its description. She shares this favorite food with her brother, Gino.

    Coco
The titular Hungry God. Coco is a God of Poverty who decides to "bless" Patty's little brother Gino after he gives him food. He's a gluttonous, self-centered deity who simply loves to eat. However, he's always open to chat with people, and who is happy to think of himself as Patty's tavern's mascot.
  • Adorable Abomination: He's a God of Poverty and states he's kin to a lot of other horrifying-sounding goods, like Ngunesis, God of Misery. But he's a cute little mouse-like creature.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He decided to bless Patty's family because Gino kindly gave him food, even after he accidentally broke Coco's shrine. Too bad his "blessings" are mostly awful.
  • Big Eater: He can pack away hundreds of dishes in a single sitting. Stuffing him full of food is crucial to advancing the game's plot, as it weakens his powers and lets the tavern improve.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Given that he's responsible for Patty's current situation, nobody likes him very much, but he hangs around anyway because he's not allowed to leave the people he's blessing.
  • I Choose to Stay: After he's freed from blessing Gino, he decides to stay with Patty's family anyway, having come to care about them during his time spent with them. He doesn't bless them any more, though.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Greedy, lazy, and "blesses" people by making them lose all their good fortunes... but if Patty feeds him lots of food, he'll still reward her with tons of items to say thanks, and he enjoys chatting up Patty's friends and patrons.
  • Lady Luck: He and Toto together are a God of Luck. Patty even specifically notes that "luck" doesn't mean just "good luck," but all kinds of chance experiences. She also notes that bad luck can still be turned around.
  • Loser Deity: He gets mocked a lot by Patty's friends, and is outright called a "worthless god" at a few points.
  • Odd Job Gods: He's a God of Poverty. And he did have worshippers prior to him blessing Patty's family, if only those who worshiped him so he'd leave them alone.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: A sort of mouse-gerbil creature with a gem in his tail. Don't be fooled.
  • Sidekick Creature Nuisance: He's so cute and cuddly! ...And everyone hates him because he bankrupted Patty's family! It doesn't help that he's quite self-centered, too.
  • Special Person, Normal Name: He's an Adorable Abomination who robs people of their fortunes named "Coco."
  • Split-Personality Merge: In the ending, he and Toto reunite, causing them to join bodies and regain their true abilities as the God of Luck.
  • Split-Personality Team: When he and Toto become one, Toto remains fully conscious inside their combined body, and he and Coco work together.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Being a fickle creature, his favorite food changes from week to week. Feeding him his favorite-of-the-moment will fill his belly more than other foods.

    Gino Maggioni
Patty's younger brother. A sweet and intelligent little boy who will do anything to help his sister. Technically, Coco is blessing him specifically, and he isn't at all happy about it.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: He's very intelligent, and he helps out a lot in the tavern, despite his tender young age. He also loves books.
  • Bookworm: His love of reading makes him quite smart for his age, and it helps him and Elias bond.
  • Cheerful Child: Despite his father going missing, he still does his best to help Patty run the tavern with a smile on his face.
  • Intergenerational Friendship:
    • With Elias. Since he likes books, and is capable of reading ones way above his age level, they can have genuinely good conversations about their favorite reading material. Elias explicitly notes that, as a youngest child himself, Gino is sort of like the younger brother he never had.
    • With Coco, by the end. Coco is an ageless god and Gino is a child, but it's pretty clear they think of themselves as friends by the end. Even if Gino might initially deny it.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: He gets a bruise on his arm when he accidentally knocks over Coco's statue, and it refuses to go away as long as Coco is blessing him.
  • Mouthy Kid: Despite his intelligence, he's still prone to childlike Brutal Honesty, especially with regards to how annoying Coco is.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Pudding, according to its item description. He shares this love with his older sister.

Party Members

    Erika Gusko
The shopkeeper of Cookoro Village, and one of Patty's first friends there. She's a chipper young woman who loves being helpful. She and Patty bond very closely, and end up having a sister-like relationship. She's been friends with Dante since they were kids.

As a combatant, she uses short swords and hammers. She's a Fragile Speedster who gets mostly physical skills, and very few magical spells. She's one of two characters who can steal from enemies.

  • Action Girl: She's a skilled fighter and the first to offer to protect Patty as she goes ingredient hunting.
  • Fragile Speedster: Very fast, and also very light-fingered, but not so good at taking hits.
  • Friendly Shopkeeper: When she first meets Patty, she's eager to welcome her to their little village, and she offers to be her protector. She also runs her shop with great cheerfulness.
  • The Generic Guy: Lampshaded. While most of the other employees have fancy histories or mysterious powers, she's just an ordinary shopkeeper with no special abilities or hidden backstory to speak of. She starts feeling self-conscious about how "generic" she is compared to others, though Patty reassures her.
  • Genki Girl: She's cheerful and always up for adventure.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: In one scene, she starts to feel self-conscious about the fact that all of her friends have crazy backstories and incredible powers, and she's just an ordinary shopkeeper. Patty reassures her that her friendly attitude is special enough for her.
  • Item Amplifier: One of her skills increases the power of items she uses, making them about 30% more powerful when used by her.
  • Item Caddy: Befitting her job as a shopkeeper, she gains a passive ability that makes any items used by her much more powerful. She also increases your drop rate and your gathering rate just by being in your party.
  • Signature Move: First Aid, a healing move that also increases Erika's own Agility. She's the only party member without an "ultimate" signature move.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Dante. They've known each other from childhood and are very comfortable arguing as a result. But beneath their sniping lies a rock-solid and very old friendship.

     Dante Savarnie
The son of the Mayor of Cookoro and Erika's lifelong friend. He's an outwardly dour and grouchy young man, but this belies his kind and thoughtful heart. He hopes Patty's restaurant will help revitalize his home village.

As a combatant, he uses longswords and spears. He's a physically-oriented fighter who gets almost no magic, but who gets a wide range of physical skills. He's also good at bracing himself and forcing enemies to target him.

     Elias
A researcher from the city of Casanavi. When he learns that Patty's family is being blessed by a living, breathing god, he becomes intrigued and decides to join their tavern crew to study him. He's very intelligent, and he has a direct, blunt way of speaking that gets right to the truth.

As a combatant, he uses rods and spears, and can focus more on magic or physical attacks depending on which of the two he uses (though he's better at magic). He gets a wide range of magic spells, and specializes in spells that can attack multiple enemies at once.

  • Admiring the Abomination: He joins the team because Coco fascinates him and he wants to study him.
  • Bookworm: As a researcher, he loves to read, and he and Gino develop a brotherly bond over their shared love of books.
  • Brutal Honesty: He has a tendency to speak his mind, with little filter. It's actually portrayed as a positive trait, as he has a tendency to say what people need to hear instead of what they expect to hear.
  • Casual Kink: He freely admits that he has a thing for watching women eat.
  • Hero of Another Story: This isn't the first time Elias gave his services to a failing restaurant as he previously assisted Siela in the first game.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Gino. He sees Gino as like the little brother he never had, and the two love to talk about the books they've been reading. It helps that Gino likes books that are normally way above his age level.
  • Magic Knight: He can use both rods (a sorcerer's weapon) and spears (a physical weapon), which can make his stats trend toward magic or physical skills. He also learns a very wide range of skills, which includes both offensive physical abilities and offensive spells.
  • Signature Move: By default, he's the only party member to passively learn the "Research" skill that lets you view enemy stats. He also has his final skill, Meteor, a strong Non-Elemental spell that attacks all enemies.
  • Squishy Wizard: Despite his Magic Knight leanings, he's still not great when it comes to physical defense, and he has low HP. (He has decent MDEF, though.)
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Salt-grilled mackerel, which he teaches you how to make in one event. He also admits that he likes watching women eat it.

     Varl
A roughshod man who, once upon a time, worked as a thief. However, he's since settled down to live an honest life, and he's happy to work in Patty's tavern. His formerly difficult life has made him wise and helped him appreciate the simple things, and he gives good advice to the other, younger members of the tavern.

As a combatant, he uses bows and short swords. His physical skills allow him to mess with his enemies, applying status effects. Like Erika, he can also steal items from enemies. He gets little magic, but what little he does get is mostly status-effect based.

  • Age-Gap Romance: Downplayed. He can potentially develop an Age Gap Crush on Patty, if you choose him to be her fake boyfriend in one event, but she's too Oblivious to Love to accept.
  • Face of a Thug: His hard life has left him scarred, and he knows he looks scary. But he's actually a very fatherly individual.
  • Real Men Hate Sugar: His favorite food is strawberry parfait, but he doesn't like to tell people this because everyone makes fun of him for having childish taste.
  • Reformed Criminal: He's a former thief who's changed his ways, and now does honest work.
  • Signature Move: He has two. His first, Stealth, is a field move that decreases the encounter rate. His second, Assassin Arts, is a One-Hit Kill spell.
  • Street Smart: As a former crook, he has a lot of pragmatic life experience. It's made him quite clever.
  • Team Dad: He shares this role with Romano, who's also a bit of a Team Grandpa. But he offers sound advice and tries to help the other employees be sensible, while also offering them a kind ear.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Strawberry parfait, which he's very embarrassed by.
  • Unmanly Secret: He loves desserts, especially strawberry parfait, which he keeps secret because people make fun of him for it. Real Men Hate Sugar, after all.

    Bellatina
A rough-and-tumble warrior woman who loves working out, steak, and everything "tough." She decides to come work at the tavern after Patty and co. help her out. Despite appearing to be nothing but Dumb Muscle, she's actually best friends with the reserved and intellectual Stella.

As a combatant, she uses hammers and longswords. She's extremely physically oriented, and focuses on dealing as much physical damage as possible. Surprisingly, she gets a number of high-level magic spells, both offensively and healing-oriented, but isn't skilled at using them.

  • Action Girl: She's a female barbarian without fear.
  • Ambiguously Gay: In addition to how close she is with Stella, when she gets drunk in one event, she demands that Patty kiss her before she falls down, fast asleep.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Loud, outgoing, and the most physically powerful member of the party.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: She gets stumbling drunk off only a small amount of alcohol, causing her to vacillate between being rowdy, being weepy, and finally demanding kisses before falling dead asleep.
  • Cool Big Sis: Rough, tumble, and always willing to look out for the younger women in the tavern.
  • Foreshadowing: She can learn several mid-level attack spells despite having low magic stats. Why? Because she's actually one of the magically gifted Amiella.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Stella found her when she was alone and hungry, and helped pick her up. The two are extremely close as a result.
  • I Owe You My Life: She became dedicated to Stella after Stella rescued her when she was stranded in the wilderness. However, it's clear that their friendship quickly became genuine.
  • Mighty Glacier: She has the highest physical stats of anyone in the party, but is pretty bad when it comes to magic, and is extremely slow.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: She's an Amiella, and is very different from the rest of her species, which is why she set out on her own. By the time she goes back to see them, however, they've mellowed out considerably and welcome her back happily.
  • Odd Couple: She, a physically oriented, loud and outgoing Mighty Glacier, is best friends with a shy and timid Squishy Wizard.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: She loves working out and getting stronger, and she's even come up with exercises she can do while waiting tables.
  • Signature Move: Her signature move is Muscle Dance, which allows her to attack repeatedly.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The strength-obsesseed, jock Tomboy to Stella's dainty Girly Girl.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Steak, and mountains of it!

     Stella
A very quiet and withdrawn young woman who practices all kinds of magic, from combat spells to fortune-telling. She was once an attendee of a very prestigious magic university, but couldn't pay her tuition and dropped out in shame. She comes to work at Patty's tavern to repay her debts, and she brings along her outgoing friend Bellatina when she does so.

As a combatant, she uses rods and bows. She's a magical powerhouse who specializes in the strongest offensive spells around. Her skillset is focused almost entirely on kicking out lots of elemental damage, to the detriment of physical skills, support abilities, and most kinds of healing (with a few notable exceptions).

  • Cute Witch: She's an adorable little witch girl with a perpetually melancholy expression.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: She loves tea and is excellent at preparing it, in fitting with her calm and collected demeanor. It also fits with her skills as a Fortune Teller.
  • Emotionless Girl: She very rarely emotes openly, and when she does, it tends to be much more subtle than the emotions of her friends.
  • Fortune Teller: She operates a fortune-telling business out of the tavern while it's closed. Patty encourages this, since she hopes the people Stella gets fortunes from will remember to come back and get food from the tavern later.
  • Friendship Denial: In one event, she claims she only lets Bellatina hang around her because she's a useful tea-tester. Considering that when she does so, it's one of the only times in the game she grins, it's pretty clear she's teasing.
  • Glass Cannon: Her MATK stat is the highest natural attack stat in the game, but her MDEF is smaller than Elias's and her DEF and HP are the lowest in the game.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: She helped nurse Bellatina back to health, and the two have been inseparable ever since.
  • Odd Couple: She's a shy and timid Squishy Wizard who is best friends with a brash and outgoing Mighty Glacier.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The dainty, tea-loving Girly Girl to Bellatina's workout-obsessed Tomboy.
  • Signature Move: Tea Party, a spell that completely restores all party members' HP and cures all their status effects. Despite her lack of healing moves otherwise, it's the most powerful healing spell in the game. She also gets Vanish, a Non-Elemental attack with a potential to be a One-Hit Kill.
  • Squishy Wizard: About as squishy as it gets, having very low defensive stats and low HP.
  • Tea Is Classy: She's intelligent and reserved, and she absolutely loves tea.
  • Tragic Dropout: She dropped out of the world's most prestigous Wizarding School due to running out of money and being unable to pay her tuition. She wants to make enough money to return there. In fact, it's later revealed that she fell prey to the same loan shark/fraudster who defrauded Patty's father... and Elias eventually convinces her that she's such a good wizard, she doesn't need to return to school because she already knows more than they could ever teach her.

Other Important Characters

    Romano
The Maggiola family butler, who's been serving the Maggiolas for around 60 years. He's a kind and patient man who loves Patty and Gino as though they were his own grandchildren. While he's a terrible cook, he's great all sorts of other managerial tasks, like waiting tables and serving customers.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's full of wise advice, and he looks out for Patty and Gino.
  • Lethal Chef: Despite being an excellent servant in most other respects, he can't cook. But having worked for a Supreme Chef most of his life, he didn't need to.
  • Old Retainer: He's been serving Patty's family for around 60 years. Unless he started serving them when his age was in the single digits, that makes him 70 at least. But he adores Patty and Gino as if they were his own grandchildren.
  • Team Dad: He looks after all the employees of the Tavern, and helps keep them in line.

     Antonio Maggioni (SPOILERS)
Patty and Gino's father and the former owner of the Silver Spoon Inn. He put all of his fortune into what he thought was a ranch that had domesticated dragons. However, it turned out to be a scam, and he lost everything. Ever since, he's been trying to make up the money to buy his restaurant back, all while hiding from his family in shame.
  • Broken Pedestal: It's revealed that him losing the tavern wasn't entirely Coco's fault, as he fell for a particularly vicious scam from a huckster who claimed to have domesticated dragons. Though Patty tries to blame Coco, she's pretty clearly shaken by her father's failure, and he's deeply ashamed as well.
  • Self-Imposed Exile: It turns out, he went missing of his own free will—he was so ashamed of losing his restaurant to an obvious scam that he couldn't bring himself to face his family until he got the money to buy it back.
  • Supreme Chef: Like his daughter after him, he's a fantastic cook, though he acknowledges by the end of the game that she has surpassed his skills.
  • Walking the Earth: He's been wandering around Marenia, trying to make the money back to reclaim his tavern.
