Main characters

Michio Yuki

The protagonist of the series. He is a man with two lives: a banker and a depraved criminal.

  • Ax-Crazy: He tries to murder literally everyone for his own amusement, for one.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Everyone in-universe think he's such a charming guy, but he is anything but
  • Broken Ace: Michio seems like a competent, attractive respectful banker at first sight, but he's secretly a severely ill, mass-murdering sociopath bent on destroying all of mankind.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Zig-Zagged. While he's aware that his actions are monstrous to the majority of people, he's so deranged that he's beyond a coherent concept of morality.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: He frequently betrays the people he works with when they outlived their usefulness to him
  • Depraved Bisexual: He enjoys sleeping with men and raping women.
    • Subverted in that his depravity is not a result of his bisexuality, and he likely would have grown up as such with a normal life.
  • Destructive Romance: His romance with Garai falls into this trope with Garai being his rapist that he fall in love with and him continuously torment Garai's conscience by having sex with him (thus violate his vow of chastity) and told him all the murderous things he did.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • While he doesn't have any regards for humans except Garai, he really loves his dog. This is harshly subverted when he's strongly implied to be raping her.
    • Garai is the only human he has even a shred of positive feeling for. Even when Garai finally standing up to him by talking to the reporter and contemplating leaving the priesthood which made Michio recognize that Garai might be a serious opponent, Michio never even entertain the thought of killing Garai (something that is incredibly easy since Garai has no protection). Michio's plan is to threatening Garai and smear his priestly reputation despite the ease that he murder other people in the manga.
  • Evil Plan: Steal the remaining canisters of MW and use them to poison the entire world to death For the Lulz.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: He's a very good-looking man, and a complete psychopath.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Behaves in a friendly and polite manner towards people, though this is just facade he uses to distract people from the fact he's a twisted serial killer. He does seem to be genuinely affable when interacting with Garai, but that's it.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Almost always wears thick wireframe glasses unless he's impersonating someone else.
  • For the Evulz: His motivation is this, as well as a desire to make others suffer in the same way that he did.
  • Freudian Excuse: Was raped as a child and exposure to the MW gas warped him into the sadistic psychopath he is today.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: He often seems to attempt to show mercy in his plans, only to subvert it at the last minute.
  • Karma Houdini: Implied through the use of his older brother, depending on which of them was killed. Ultimately downplayed either way as he's still suffering from MW poisoning and it's very likely that he'll die before he's able to restart his plan.
  • Kill All Humans: His master plan.
  • Laughably Evil: Downplayed. He's very giddy at times to the point of almost resembling a Keet, and spends about half of his screen time trolling Garai, but his actions are not Played for Laughs.
  • Mask of Sanity: He appears to be polite and well-adjusted in public, but in reality he's a sadistic criminal.
  • Master of Disguise: He goes through numerous disguises from both genders throughout the series, such as a man with a beard, a woman he killed, a nun and his brother. Probably.
  • No One Could Survive That!: Michio survives from the explosion of his jet. Probably.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: His actions cause MW and its tests to be unveiled to the greater public, prompting the families affected to be able to seek justice, although he had no noble motive for doing so.
  • Practically Joker: He's a physically frail chessmaster who went insane due to being exposed to chemicals, enjoys brutally murdering people for the sake of spreading chaos, finds his crimes hilarious, and has a Ho Yay relationship with his opponent. However, The Joker has more autonomy since his brain wasn't actually physically damaged by the chemicals and he is instead a Straw Nihilist, and Yuki has a clearly defined past.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Subverted. Garai initially thinks that he's doing what he's doing in an attempt to punish the creators of MW, but it turns out he doesn't give a damn either way, and just wants to see everyone die before he does.
  • Sadist: He really enjoys raping and murdering people.
  • '70s Hair: He's got some rather serious sideburns going on.
  • Sissy Villain: He is noticeably effeminate, since he often crossdresses.
  • The Sociopath: Selfish, manipulative, lacking in empathy, sadistic and has nothing in the way of morals. He very much fits the criteria of one.
    • To be more specific medically, he betters fits the profile of psychopath. Sociopaths are generally born without empathy, while psychopaths develop their condition as a result of living situations or exposure to toxic elements. He has the surface-level charm of a sociopath, but unlike them, he has the compulsive need for violence of psychopaths. It's possible MW gave him a neurological condition worse than both.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Believe it or not, he was once used to be a sweet and shy kid before he got affected by the MW. After the timeskip 15 years later, he's not that person anymore.
  • Twin Switch: It turns out that in the end, he may have survived, and that it was his older brother who got shot by the hostage, if not the other way around.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid:: Before inhaling the MW gas which turned him into the man he is today.
  • Villain Protagonist: He is the lead character, and an utterly vile human being.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He rapes poor Sumiko twice
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: A rather unsympathetic example, but one regardless. In spite of everything he's done, the reason that he's a sociopathic, mass-murdering rapist is entirely a result of circumstances outside of his control, and he's slowly and immensely painfully dying as a result of exposure to the chemicals that caused him to become what he is in the first place. That said, his crimes are so evil and disturbing that it's hard to feel too bad for him.

Father Garai

The antagonist of the series. He is a priest who reluctantly helps Michio Yuki.

  • Anti-Hero: Both a Classical Anti-Hero and an Unscrupulous Hero. He's clearly out of his depth, and has no idea how to handle the situation despite trying his best, and he also is pressured into working with Michio. He was also a child rapist, although he regrets it dearly.
  • Armoured Closet Gay: Or bisexual. He eventually gets over his hatred of his sexuality, although he has good reason to not be in a relationship with Yuki.
  • The Atoner: He's largely responsible for making Yuki what he is, and he's sorry from the bottom of his heart.
  • Badass Preacher: And a Japanese one at that.
  • Character Development: After spending years allowing Michio to walk over him, he gradually takes an active role in ensuring his defeat when he sees the sheer scale of the horrors Michio is attempting to commit.
  • Destructive Romance: His romance with Yuki falls into this trope with him being Yuki's rapist that the latter fall in love with and Yuki continuously torment his conscience by having sex with him (thus violate his vow of chastity) and told Garai all the murderous things he did.
  • Heel–Faith Turn: Once used to be a gang member and rapist before finding God and reforming his ways.
  • Hero Antagonist: Although the story is in large part based from his perspective.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He throws himself into the ocean with the tanks of MW to save the world.
  • Hunk: Most certainly, and Michio takes note.
  • Morality Pet: He tries to pushes into becoming Michio's Morality Chain, but ends up becoming this role.
    • While Michio never once stop his plan because of Garai's objection or influence, Michio keeps associating with Garai even when that is extremely disadvantageous to do so and never even entertain the thought of just simply killing him.
    • At the climax, Garai is fully determined to stop Michio, he goes to great length to take Garai on his escape and make a We Can Rule Together offer.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Downplayed in that he's the hero, but he's a rapist and redeems himself by jumping off a plane with MW into the ocean.
  • Straight Gay: In a relationship with Michio, and quite masculine.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While Michio is the main character, the story takes place mainly from Garai’s perspective, likely because Michio is too unsympathetic to focus an entire story on.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He used to be a thug and child rapist., but he's reformed himself into a priest.

Meguro

A prosecutor in charge of apprehending the Serial Kidnapper.

Tamanojo Kawamoto

Michio Yuki's lookalike older brother.

  • Bishōnen: Unlike his brother, he’s as pretty inside as he is outside.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Michio's Cain. He ends up taking Michio's fall. Probably.
  • Camp Straight: Unlike Michio, there's no indication that he is gay or bisexual, but he still crossdresses often in his plays.
  • Evil All Along: Assuming it is him at the end, where it is implied by the evil looking smirk on his face that he is secretly an insane monster just like his brother, but it's otherwise left up in the air.
  • Happily Married: He’s married to his loving wife. Regardless of whether he’s going insane like his brother, or if he’s been replaced by Michio, it’s not going to last.
  • Nice Guy: In sharp contrast to his brother, Tamanojo shows what Michio would be like if he hadn't been exposed to the MW. Assuming that Michio didn't swap him out, it's implied he's going to go just as crazy as Michio.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Part of his job description as a Kabuki actor, completely unlike his brother.
