Main Characters

    General
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Several objects in the Owl House have been brought to life via animation magic in addition to Brucy and Rocky, including Luz's mini-fridge.
  • Badass Family: The Clawthornes definitely act as one, which includes Amity to a small degree since she's Lilith's goddaughter. This also extends to both Camila and Cross, the latter being a Clawthorne by blood.
  • Cast Full of Gay: Aside from King, Camila, Jerbo, Barcus, and Cross, every main character so far (excluding the supporting ones) are queer; Luz, Lilith, Skara, Viney, and Donna are all bisexual, Amity, Emily, and Nina are lesbians and Hunter is gay, Eda (who has several exes of different genders, including the non-binary Raine) remains ambiguous, Willow and Boscha are both pansexual, and Gus is an aromantic.
  • Childhood Friends:
    • Luz, Willow and Gus have known each other for 4 years when the series began. Hunter has been a casual acquaintance of the trio for that timeframe.
    • Subverted for Amity, Boscha, and Skara. Amity didn't bother getting to know the other two, Boscha treated them like henchgirls, and Skara assumed things were fine between them and didn't think that Amity was forced to hang out with her and Boscha.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: As of "Back to Hexside", the main kid trio is this (Luz is red, Willow is green, and Gus is blue), reflected by the tracks they study in school and thus, their uniforms.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Many characters have a signature color, most of which remain the same as canon:
    • Luz: Purple (Black and Red are her secondary colors)
    • Amity: Pink (Purple remains a secondary color)
    • Eda, Skara, and Maya: Red
    • Willow and Cross: Green
    • Gus and Donna: Blue
    • Boscha: Yellow
    • Hunter and Emily: Gold
    • Nina: Orange
  • Commonality Connection: Between two supposed social outcasts, three over-studious nerds, two Alpha Bitches (one with a Hidden Heart of Gold, another a former Arc Villainess) and a Nice Girl who initially started out as a Beta Bitch, there isn't much to get all of them to hang out together, much less with an outlaw witch, her pet, her house demon, and eventually her older sister. So what binds them all together? Luz, the teen rebel who's friends with each of the kids and family to Eda, King, Hooty, and Lilith.
  • Ensemble Cast: To date, there's been a total of 27 main characters in the series. With Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus being removed from the main cast as of Chapter 93, Nina and Donna taking their places, and Emily and Cross being added after Chapter 120, there's now 24 characters, 18 should one not count Owlbert, Brucy, Rocky, Kay, Sam, and Acorn, who play supporting roles.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Of the original kid trio plus Amity; Gus is Sanguine, Luz is Choleric, Amity is Melancholic and Willow is Phlegmatic.
    • Of the troublemakers; Viney is Sanguine, Jerbo is Melancholic, Barcus is Phlematic and Luz remains Choleric.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: The kids initially composed of three males (Gus, Jerbo and Barcus) and three females (Luz, Willow and Viney). Amity, Boscha, and Skara's inclusions put it out of balance on the girls' side. Before then, Hunter created a "two guys, two girls" group with the original trio whenever he hung out with them.
  • Handshake Substitute: All of Luz's friends tend to exchange fist bumps; what makes it special is that it's unique to the Demon Realm inhabitants. Luz typically teaches them to a witch to officially symbolize her friendship with them, as she did with Amity and Skara.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: The residents of the Owl House have done a lot of good and are seen as heroes among most of the citizens of Bonesborough, but they're branded outlaws by the Emperor's Coven and treated with contempt by the rest of the Isles. It's slowly averted as several citizens see how useless the Emperor's Coven has been in solving problems that Luz and Amity have taken care of, with it being exploited in Eda's case after she leads the charge against the Tarot Guild. Lilith's reputation sinks lower during Book 2 as her deal with Amity, cursing Eda, and being exposed for having an affair with Odalia makes her a hated pariah to the rest of the Isles (though only her family knows that last one was caused by a succubus demon.)
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Luz's entire friend group is ranged from 14-16 (12 for Gus) and has one with Eda, her mother who's in her mid-40's.
  • Limited Social Circle: In the beginning Luz only spent time with Willow and Gus after befriending them, then befriended the troublemakers a few months before the start of the series. Both groupings solely hung out with each other but this was averted when Luz and Willow respectively befriended Amity and Skara: it went on to being subverted when that led to everyone becoming friends with Amelia, Cat, the Blight twins, Mattholomule and several other people. The original trio even lampshade how they've outgrown this in "Chapter 67: After the War".
  • Party Scattering: As of "Chapter 71: The Hunting Witch", Amity, Willow, and Gus have all been sent to different locations on Earth with no way to return back home to the Boiling Isles, cutting Luz off from her closest friends. They were eventually found and brought home in "Chapter 86: Closing the Gates".
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The original trio and the troublemakers each fell into this, and eventually combined together as a single group.
  • True Companions

"I learned a long time ago that if I want to prove to these people that I can be a witch, I'll show them that a human can do magic."

A 14-year-old human girl who was found by Eda and raised in the Boiling Isles after being orphaned as an infant. Having grown up with the Demon Realm practically against her, Luz's dream is to be the greatest witch of both worlds.

  • Accidental Kidnapping: In "That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles", Camila reveals to everyone that Abigail Gates is Luz's godmother, which means that Eda took her in without thinking to check if she had any living family in the Human Realm. Considering how Luz would've turned out had she been raised by the Gates family, as "What If... Abigail raised Luz?" shows, it's a mixed bag.
  • Accidental Murder: In "Chapter 106: Highway to Mel", she ends up gaining the same kind of sonic scream ability as King which she uses on Trini, killing her as a result. This makes her feel even more guilty than when she accidentally destroyed Maya.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Having lived on the Boiling Isles all her life, Luz's been subjected to discrimination at the hands of its residents. The worst example being when a mob of people threatened to beat her to death the second they saw her ears.
    • In Book 2, Luz develops Post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of all her near-death adventures along with developing a fear of sharp objects from being stabbed and cut by two of her enemies in the Glandus War. Because of this, she's given medication to treat this. She later ends up killing somebody which leaves her with immense guilt.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Luz was found and adopted by Eda as a baby in this fic after her mother, Camila, died in a car crash. Additionally since Eda is still legally married to Stan Pines, who's Dipper's guardian, this makes them (and Mabel) her family too.
  • Adaptational Badass: Luz has more combat experience than in canon, she's a talented graffiti artist and can take down anyone or anything that makes the mistake of challenging her. She wouldn't call herself a future badass witch if it wasn't true.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: While Luz was a major bookworm in canon who even planned out a novel with King, this Luz was initially nowhere near as literate, with her poor handwriting baffling Amity before she started to improve her grades.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: But while the above trope holds true, Luz learning glyph magic earlier allows her to experiment with creating new spells, and she learns lightning and animation magic prior to the series' events.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: She's a lot more disrespectful to authority and less tolerant of people who bully her friends, being more than happy to shut them up with either her fists or her pranks... at least, at first.
  • Adaptational Hairstyle Change: Luz's hair is now much longer than in canon and has an orange streak dyed into it, referencing Eda's original hair color. She later has it trimmed down to a bobcut with more orange streaks.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Initially she was Luz Noceda, but being adopted by Eda made her an official Clawthorne.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Because of her altered upbringing, Luz has different interactions with everyone (It's better to list the less important ones in their respective categories.)
    • The parent work sees Luz form a student-teacher bond with Eda and close friendships with King and to a lesser extent Hooty, which grows to the point of all of them seeing her as family. Here, Eda adopted her as an infant and Luz adamantly acknowledges her as her mother, King as her brother and she treats Hooty with a little more respect.
    • In the show, Luz and Amity started off as rivals with Luz realizing she was nicer than she let on, becoming her friend, and helping her with her problems which led to Amity developing a crush on her. Here, they've been enemies for years and only start spending time together during their tutoring sessions. After Amity learns of Luz's hardships, she becomes more sympathetic with her which causes Luz to gain feelings for her that later become mutual. They also hook up faster than in canon.
    • Her friendship with Willow and Gus hits some bumps at certain points: in Book 1, Willow stops talking to her since she keeps messing with people and passes it off as defending her friends which causes Luz to think on that and eventually apologize to Willow; in Book 2, Luz is put off by Gus maintaining a grudge against Amity after learning of her spy status and his resulting anger leads to them not talking for a time until he sees sense and apologizes for it.
    • She may have been able to accept Lilith as her surrogate aunt after forgiving her for everything in the show, but here she struggles to see Lilith as her actual family at first. Things between them worsen after Lilith confesses to killing Camila, but Luz is able to move past it and forgive Lilith.
    • There's also the matter of her relationship with Camila: while Camila slowly accepted how Luz had grown on the Boiling Isles in Season 3, here she struggles to accept her life and ends up saying Luz isn't "normal" which puts a strain on their relationship.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Luz is still human, but she starts turning into a black-scaled, winged, reptilian creature with black eyes containing glowing blue irises. Emperor Belos claims she's evolved into a cambion (a human infused with magic) due to her body adapting to the environment of the Boiling Isles, just like him. It becomes debunked in "Chapter 106: Highway to Mel", as her yellow eyes and use of a Super-Scream strongly implies that she's really a Titan, with Chapter 130: "Everything Changes After This" confirming she's part-Titan due to being connected with the Titan of the Boiling Isles.
  • Adoptive Name Change: As previously stated Eda adopted Luz, thus giving her the Clawthorne name.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Eda always calls her her "little owl pellet". Viney and Brucy tend to call her "Boss", and Jake and Randy start calling her "LC Hammer" in Chapter 113.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: After transforming for the first time and nearly mauling Boscha in their duel, Luz becomes terrified by what's happening to her. Early in Book 2, she decides to overcome this fear and start taking control of her condition.
  • Alternate Self: Quite a few.
    • The first What If? chapter, "What If... Lilith raised Luz?" shows Luz having grown up with Lilith as her mother and having been Childhood Friends with Hunter and the Blight siblings.
    • The second "What If..." chapter depicts a variant of Luz who had been left in the orphanage by Eda and adopted by Abigail. This version grew up discontent with life in Gatesfield and its two-faced citizens.
    • In Chapter 86: "Closing the Gates", Luz sees a dozen alternate counterparts of herself after the dimensional portal under the Mystery Shack activates.
    • Since The Owl and The Frog is an Alternate Universe to the LCU, its version of Luz is this Luz's counterpart in that universe, as confirmed in the fourth sidetrack.
  • Ambiguously Human: She started out as human, but became infused with magic growing up in the Boiling Isles resulted in her evolution into a cambion. This is later debunked when she uses the same kind of scream power as King, showing that she's becoming part-Titan.
  • AM/FM Characterization: Luz is a rebellious, tough-as-nails girl who enjoys listening to rock music: she namedrops several classic rock bands throughout the series, "King and Lil' Luz's Day Out" even showing that Eda played Slipknot for her while she was still an infant. However, she enjoys artists such as Prince and Phil Collins, both of whom were known for pop as well as R&B and soft rock, respectively. Word of God also confirms she likes punk rock, namely Linkin Park.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Luz tends to mess with her older brother King for a number of reasons, more frequently when he gets a girlfriend. She later extends this to her cousin Cross, declaring that learning of their relation grants her the right to butt in on his life.
  • Anti-Hero: She firmly sees herself as one of these, as she limits her heroic acts to just protecting her loved ones unless circumstances say otherwise and will not hesitate to get violent when someone does so.
  • Batter Up!: Luz's signature weapon is a black metal baseball bat she initially claims is a support stick needed to ward off the dangers of the isles. In "Exams to Survive" she brings it to life with her new animation spell and names him "Brucy".
  • Battle Couple: She and Amity become an effective one after facing Grom together.
  • The Beastmaster: When she finally decides to multi-track in Book 2, she chooses to join Skara in Beast Keeping, seeing it as a chance to further learn to control her cambion form.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Ever since "The Rescue", Luz has been declaring that she'll kick Belos's ass for all that he's done. She finally gets her chance in "Let's Dip Into the Time Pool Again!" when she beats up Philip Clawthorne after learning he's Belos in the past, only to realize she influenced his actions towards her, her family and her friends.
  • Befriending the Enemy: She unknowingly does this with Hunter after they first met, but he rarely changes much in the four years they know each other until their friendship is damaged.
  • Berserk Button: Luz doesn't tolerate anyone who messes with or even insults her, her friends, her adoptive family and especially Amity. She also Hates Being Touched and being called/hearing other people be called some "thing".
  • Big Little Sister: Luz is 6 years younger than King, but she grew taller while he stayed the same size as when Eda found her.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She's very protective of Dipper and Gus, not wanting them to date girls she believes will take advantage of them. On the inverted side, she won't let anyone mess with King, her older brother.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Living on the Boiling Isles has made Luz accustomed to eating the local cuisine, even ordering off-menu food whenever she visits Gravity Falls. It turns out to be a hint to her body evolving.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Her cambion state has black sclera and when she's starting out in using it, she does act more violently than she already did.
  • Book Dumb: At first; since she didn't take her schoolwork seriously, she had poor grades and couldn't even write her own name without it looking like gibberish, but her usage of glyph magic, fighting prowess and street smarts more than prove she's not completely dense. Tutoring with Amity turned this around, and Luz is able to recall history facts off the top of her head.
  • Boots of Toughness: She usually sports black steel-toed boots. She wears other kinds with different outfits
  • Break the Cutie: Initially, Luz was as optimistic as her canon self as a kid. Then the slayground incident happened, and she learned just how prejudiced citizens of the Boiling Isles were towards humans.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: In the beginning, Luz started off as such due to not being interested in school and getting thrown into the Detention track, yet having some knowledge in a number of different areas of magic along with learning the glyphs, making her like Eda in her youth. This trait would be shed as she took her studies more seriously.
  • Broken Bird: Having suffered a lot as a kid and going through even more suffering as a teen has made her a very cynical badass.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Oh, definitely. Luz is a heavy hitter with a habit of fighting first, but she still has a hidden sweet center.
  • Bully Hunter: Luz's delinquent behavior is often directed towards anyone who picks on her friends, which is inherently destructive; while she tries to make her pranks karmic in nature, the ensuing fallout tends to harm people uninvolved. Half the time, like with Boscha, this results in a Cycle of Revenge creating an escalating war between them that causes Luz's friends to be caught in the crossfire. In both cases, Luz trying to make it about defending her friends jeopardizes her friendship with Willow because it comes across as her being Secretly Selfish and hoisting moral responsibility for her actions onto her friends.
  • Challenging the Bully: She regularly did this by defending Gus from Horace since they met. After she got into Hexside, Luz would repeatedly butt heads with Amity and Boscha to keep them from targeting Willow.
  • Character Development:
    • When the story began, Luz acted rash whenever she tried to defend those she cares about, treated school like a big, unnecessary waste of time (even more so than Eda did) and only wanted to learn as much as possible and leave just as fast. However as time goes on, she begins to ease up, accepting the consequences of her actions and taking responsibility for the trouble she caused while learning how to be a better person and a better friend. She also decides to take things slowly and pace herself, which ultimately leads to her decision of studying just one track the following semester instead of multiple tracks at a time.
    • Luz's initial attitude towards Amity stemmed from said protective nature towards her friends, especially Willow, and her resolve to defend them by messing with her first. It doesn't help that she scammed Amity out of her allowance when they first met as kids. When Amity begins tutoring her and they find common ground, Luz owns up to causing the incident that affected Amity's grades and they stopped seeing themselves as the jerks they've only ever known. By the end of "Heart to Heart", Luz realizes she's developed a crush on Amity and gradually eases into it before she goes on a date with her, sharing their first kiss and entering a relationship.
    • In Book 2, she attempts to come to terms on whether she's human or not while trying to control her cambion form and after taking a serious loss against Emperor Belos, she decides to start using her head more often instead of blindly rushing into a situation headfirst.
  • Child of Two Worlds: Luz is a human-turned-Titan raised by a witch who'd later reconnect with her human roots. She outright declares herself a witch of two worlds, one family in Chapter 129.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: In the beginning, Luz was brash, hot-headed, short-tempered, couldn't care less about school, and had no respect for authority on top of acting out against people who messed with her or her loved ones. As the story goes on, she works to overcome all of these flaws (or at least tone them down) in order to become a better person.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: When she started attending Hexside, she sported the blue uniform of the Healing track. Then she had the gray of the Detention track after she was thrown in it. Midway through Book 1, she gains the red of the Bard track and as of Chapter 53, her sleeves have the orange of the Beast Keeping track.
  • Companion Cube: Luz's bat, which she later brings to life.
  • Costume Evolution:
    • After joining the Bard track, Luz's uniform sleeves and leggings became red. When she later joined Beast Keeping in "Whatever Happened to Anu Bist?", her sleeves became orange.
    • Following the "Glandus War" arc, she starts wearing Angel's leather jacket with her usual outfit instead of her green one. She also adds it with her uniform or other casual wear.
    • Downplayed in Chapter 109, when she takes to wearing Amity's eclipse necklace after their mock wedding.
  • Create Your Own Villain:
    • It's her own fault Boscha actively targets her all the time: she threatened Boscha to keep her from bullying Willow when she first started attending Hexside, which led to the triclops severly injuring her in the semester duels.
    • She also gave Asi a reason to hate her the moment she forced Ms. Torigore into retirement, which led to her Cruel and Unusual Death. Since then, Asi rose to become Glandus' top healer so he could vivisect her alive during the Glandus War in vengeance.
  • Crush Blush: Luz starts having these upon realizing she's developed a crush on Amity.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Anyone who faces her in a battle always loses, even when they initially have the upper hand. Emperor Belos and Emily Tricks are currently the only exceptions to the rule, though Emily does lose to her in their third battle and she delivers this to Belos back when he was still Philip Clawthorne in the past.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When she was 5 years old, Luz snuck away from Eda while running errands and went to the slayground. While playing on the swings, she flew off and her hood fell: once everyone saw her ears, they proceeded to beat her until Eda came to help. By then, Luz had suffered serious injuries that left her traumatized.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Just try to stop her from talking back or making some kind of crack at someone when she gets the chance.
  • Deal with the Devil:
    • "Chapter 60: Prelude to War: Part 1" has her forced into one with Belos after catching her trying to break the BAT's out of the Conformatorium: don't try it again, and he won't harm them or imprison Amity for helping the Thians family smuggle wild witches off the Isles. Luz agrees, but the deal's pointless since Belos petrifies members of the rebel group behind closed doors.
    • In "Chapter 82: Shaping Up or Nothing", she makes one with Baron Samedi to acquire a soul for them in order to save Lilith's. "Chapter 107: Resolutions" reveals that they want the Inner Demon's soul, and Luz now has until the Day of Unity to complete her end of the bargain.
  • Death Glare: Will often shoot one at anyone idiotic enough to mess with her, her friends and her family. It works on everybody except Baron Samedi.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At the start of the series, Luz often acted out causing trouble and antagonizing anybody who got on her bad side, having a very limited group of friends and an extensive list of enemies. Over time, she's slowly established to be a Broken Bird/Knight in Sour Armor who's gone through a lot of hardship growing up in a place where people thought very little of her, and when she sees how her actions affect her friends when she defends them along with developing a crush on Amity, Luz endeavors to better herself and not only becomes Amity's girlfriend while making up with Willow, but she gains the friendships of several of her peers at Hexside while earning the respect of a few of her enemies.
  • Delinquent: Well, of course she starts off as one of these. Otherwise, what reason would the first book be called "Hexside's Number One Delinquent Witch"?
  • Delinquent Hair: Downplayed example. She dies a streak of her hair the standard Clawthorne orange.
  • The Dreaded: Luz is seen as this to both the students and staff of Hexside and the people (mostly the adults) of Gravity Falls.
  • Duality Motif: Whenever Maya shares her body, one of Luz's eyes turns red while the other remains brown. It wears off when Maya retreats into the mindscape.
  • Dumbass No More: Thanks in part to Amity's tutoring and taking her studies more seriously, Luz sheds off her initial ignorance by the semester exams.
  • Elemental Powers: She's already discovered the four primary glyphs by the start of the series, and learns the wind, water, snow, and invisibility combos. When she gains her bile sac, she starts using her innate magic and in order learns the Light spell first, then Fire, Ice, and finally Plants.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Luz's prank on Boscha in "The Owl Lady's Daughter" shows how this version of the character is someone who isn't one to let bullies mock her, and the fact that the prank involved her tricking Boscha into pepper spraying her eyes and finding ways to make the pain worse shows that she's very resourceful.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Eda raised her to never resort to mugging. She also doesn't approve of plagiarism.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Because she grew up in the Demon Realm facing its dangers and learning about the glyphs, Luz has more combat and magic-using experience than she did at the beginning of The Owl House.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In "Escape", she allows Cat to give her a new hairstyle. Once Cat's finished, Luz sports a flip-style bobcut with long bangs (partially styled into 2 "L" shapes) and orange streaks in the tips of her upper strands.
  • Eye Color Change: Several.
    • Her eyes start to turn blue when her cambion powers begins to activate.
    • When absorbing palisman essence, they turn green just like Belos's.
    • Under Maya's possession, they turn orange, later red.
    • While she and Maya were attacking Hunter, they glow yellow. It occurs again when she uses her Super-Scream against Trini in "Chapter 106: Highway to Mel".
    • Upon unlocking her ice magic, her pupils turn white.
  • Eye Scream: She received a black eye in the aftermath of the slayground incident. She later gets these from her battles with Boscha and Emily Tricks.
  • Familiar: In Chapter 129: "The Clawthorne Family Reunion", Luz completes her palisman and reveals it to her family and the extended Clawthorne Clan: a purple mockingbird named Atticus. However, she doesn't require him be her staff since she has wings, so she creates him to serve as a Morph Weapon who can give her magic (whether natural or glyphs) a power boost.
  • Female Rockers Play Bass: Luz is skilled in playing guitar and since Rocky is an Acoustic Bass, she fits into this category.
  • Foil: She acts as one to Emily Tricks.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: A variant. While Luz is already out as bisexual, she worries about telling Camila she likes girls at the séance and how she'll react to her liking Amity. The decision is ripped out of her hands when Amity introduces herself as Luz's girlfriend, but luckily Camila's more than okay with Luz's orientation and their relationship.
  • Freudian Excuse: Luz resented teachers under the belief that they simply push students like her around for fun. This mindset stemmed from her early days at Hexside, when she overheard the Healing track teacher, Ms. Torigore, admit she was only acting like she cared about her and would kick her out if she had the chance. In retaliation, Luz sicced the escaped Choosy Hat on her, which forced Ms. Torigore to retire and landed Luz in Detention.
  • Ghost Memory: In Book 2, Luz somehow starts reliving Belos's memories as Philip Clawthorne at certain times when she's asleep.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: The first signs of Luz's condition are that her eyes glow blue when she's having an episode.
  • Goth: Chapter 49 shows she had a goth phase when she was 12, her skull earrings being a remnant of that time.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Inverted. Luz regularly wears purple but since she's a Tomboy Action Girl, she's anything but graceful.
  • Graceful Loser: After being tricked by Malphas into doing his chores to get revenge for the past chaos she caused at the library, Luz takes it in stride.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: A bad habit for Luz is that it's really easy to provoke her by pressing her Berserk Buttons or just making her mad.
  • Hammerspace Hair: Like Eda, Luz is able to store several objects in her massive hair. She's no longer able to do this after getting her hair cut, at least until it grows back.
  • Happily Adopted: Obviously, Luz is Eda's daughter by adoption. "Back to Hexside" reveals Eda has the papers to prove it.
  • Hates Being Alone: After dealing with the Inner Demon for herself, she becomes afraid he'll come after her again if she's by herself.
  • Healing Factor: After taking a knife to her back, she discovers she has this ability after the wound heals instantly. It doesn't work as effectively in Book 2 due to a mental block until the "Glandus War" arc.
  • Hearing Voices: In "Deserve Nothing", she begins to hear a voice ordering her to devour palisman souls.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: She wears Angel's leather jacket for the school war after Eda gives it to her and continues wearing it afterward.
  • Her Boyfriend's Jacket: The subtle female-female example that comes with her owning Amity's eclipse amulet becomes more important as it's the equivalent of a promise/wedding ring that Amity gives to her in Chapter 109.
  • Hereditary Hairstyle: Invoked and Justified. In Book 1 and the first 6 chapters of Book 2, Luz's hair is grown out to resemble Eda's since her witch mother was her idol throughout her life. Once she's encouraged to start being her own witch, she eventually has it cut shorter.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Even before finding Rocky, Luz knew how to play the guitar, as revealed in "Regretful Decisions".
    • Although she's a comic fan, she's been implied a few times in Book 2 to enjoy fine literature, such as Stephen King and Mark Twain.
  • High-School Hustler: Luz initially embodies this perfectly, selling human junk at Hexside.
  • Hot-Blooded: Her (initially) agressive personality and habit of rushing into things makes her this.
  • Iconic Item: Luz has two; her metal bat and her deck of glyph spell cards. She had a third one in her bracelet.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: This happens to signify her cambion powers beginning to grow.
  • Idiot Hero: For lack of better words, Luz pretty much can be an idiot as she acts on impulse and charges in without a plan without considering the potential consequences. This is best shown in her poorly though-out attempt to break the Bards Against the Throne out of prison only to have her butt handed to her by Belos.
  • Important Haircut: In "Escape", Luz allows Cat to cut her hair and it's restyled with a few more streaks of orange dye. Luz confesses that her hair was styled like Eda's since she idolized her mother, but the new look is meant to symbolize her becoming her own witch rather than aspiring to be just like Eda.
  • Interspecies Romance: She falls in love with Amity earlier than in canon.
  • I Work Alone: She (and Gus) refers to herself as a "lone wolf", a fact she holds up whenever she tries to solve problems by herself. She sheds this trait after losing a fight against Emperor Belos and getting grounded for it.
  • Jerkass: Because of the Slayground incident, Luz invokes this by acting tough and messing with anyone who gets on her bad side which inevitably garners their fury. Willow openly calls her out on her behavior during the moonlight conjuring, straining the friendship between the two and leading to her growing out of it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her bad girl attitude, she just cares about keeping her friends and adopted family safe. She also has a secret love of Otabin.
  • Karmic Thief: She used to justify scamming Amity out of her allowance when they were 9 for how she treated Willow.
  • Karmic Trickster: Luz attempts to be this whenever she tries getting back at anyone who picks on her friends, but ends up coming off as a Bully Hunter.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: This girl's endured numerous kinds of pain, heartache, and even torture, and she still keeps fighting the good fight.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She often runs headfirst into a dangerous situation without a plan or thinking of her own safety. Boscha uses this against her in "Exams to Survive", creating a strategy that was based on Luz attacking first. Emperor Belos later uses this against her in "Prelude to War (Part 1)", fully expecting she'd come alone to break the Bards Against the Throne out of prison: it's the ensuing loss, being grounded and learning about Belos' plans for her that she sheds this trait along with her I Work Alone tendencies for good.
  • Little Miss Con Artist: As Eda's daughter, she naturally grew up being one of these.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Being a natural Deadpan Snarker at the age of 14 will also breed one of these.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Amity and for good reason; Luz had always tried to comfort her after they begin dating and she learns about all the hell Amity's been through. So when Luz dumped her after learning she was spying on her family for Lilith, Amity shut down and begged to die. ""Chapter 67: After the War" reveals it's now mutual since Luz relies on her to keep her grounded due to her PTSD.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: After the Slayground Incident, Luz closed herself off from making friends outside of her family for five years until she met Gus and Willow. Even though they didn't get off to a good start, they became very close and Luz slowly began opening up to kids her age.
  • Loser Protagonist: Due to being a human, Luz is treated like an outcast by the population of Bonesborough for most of her life and it doesn't change when she begins going to Hexside. It is slowly averted however, when she starts proving her worth.
  • Loss of Identity: In Book 2, Luz tries to figure out what makes her who she is and whether she's human, a cambion, or something else.
  • Magic Music: She may have joined the Bard track for its artistic side, but Luz soon begins learning about the musical side and she takes to using Rocky after finding him. In "Prelude to War (Part 3)", she starts learning to play the lute.
  • Matchmaker Failure: In "Regretful Decisions", Luz attempts to be The Matchmaker and set up Cat with Hunter so she doesn't try to date Gus. This ends up failing as Cat isn't interested and Hunter claims he's already seeing someone, but the revelation that Hunter had a boyfriend meant her plan was doomed to fail from the start.
  • Meet My Good Friends Lefty and Righty: In a flashback in "Friendship Dynamics", Luz tells Gus that if his bullies come after him again, she'll show them the fear of the Titan with her fists: she names her left fist "Hellraiser" and her right "Bone S. Crusher".
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Luz utilizing a bat as her signature weapon likens her a bit to her beta design. In "Chapter 7: Double Double Tutor and Trouble", Luz wears the outfit of said design minus the beanie.
    • Luz being able to play the guitar and the lute on top of using Bard magic to create lightning spells originated from MoringMark comics.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: The slayground incident opened Luz's eyes to how hated humans are on the Boiling Isles and affected her to the point that she swore off making friends because she refuses to experience that pain again, which is why she toughened up, learned magic and messed with other people before they had a chance to mess with her.
  • The Nicknamer: Luz will often give nicknames to everyone, ranging from affectionate to humiliating to even the occasional Insult of Endearment.
  • Noodle Incident: Because of her troublemaking, she's accumulated too many to list here.
  • Official Couple: As of "Maternal Aspiration", she starts dating Amity after they clear things up between them regarding their first kiss. They break up in "Everything's Gone Wrong" and get back together in "Stranger Danger".
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Downplayed. Even though Luz lost her both of her parents when she was merely an infant, Eda gave her as much of a happy childhood as she could with an older brother and eventually friends who love her for the person she is, not her species.
  • Partial Transformation: In conjunction to her Voluntary Shapeshifting, Luz learns how to summon her cambion claws and wings without fully transforming.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: During the moonlight conjuring, Luz's attempt to launch a salmon at Boscha via slingshot, then actually using it to pelt the Demon Hunters with eggs results in arguments between her and Willow about how Luz always goes too far with getting revenge causing more harm than good, all while she tries to justify it as defending her friends. As a result, their friendship becomes strained and they stop hanging out together for several chapters with Luz using that time to think about how she can be a better friend. They eventually make peace and renew their friendship.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: After their first kiss, Luz and Amity stare at each other before they realize what they did and completely freeze up. As a result, Owlbert flies under Luz and takes her home.
  • Power Nullifier: Her spiked bracelet is meant to control her scales, but Belos eventually reveals it does nothing and is only a placebo.
  • Protagonist Title: The whole series is named after her.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Her outfits besides her uniform typically have purple on them and it's already been established that she's tougher than everyone who underestimates her assumes she is.
  • Power Gives You Wings: In "Good from the Bad", she gains a set of wings in her cambion form.
  • Rebellious Spirit: As Eda's daughter, she was taught to oppose the Coven system and strives to learn every type of magic while standing up for her beliefs.
  • Red Baron: According to Kitsuni's little sister Mai, Luz is known as the "Hellish Baseball Bat Girl" in the Yokai Realm due to her and Amity killing the Coachman.
  • Red Is Heroic: She's the main protagonist and she wears red sleeves and leggings with her uniform after joining the Bard track.
  • Red Mage: Initially she refused to multi-track until she knew she was ready for it. Now she's specializing in Bard (where she can express her creative side) and Beast-Keeping (where she can hopefully learn how to control her cambion form.)
  • Reformed Bully: She qualifies, as she tried to pass herself off as a Bully Hunter but ended up being a jerkass bully instead which is why she aspired to change for the better.
  • Scaled Up: Downplayed; her cambion form has reptilian scales, which is why Bill calls her "Lizard Bat".
  • Secret-Keeper: When she was 7 years old, Eda told her about how she really found King and asked Luz not to say anything to him because he was happy believing the lie. Luz convinced Eda to tell the truth in "The Book of King", only to find that King had always known.
  • Secret Relationship: Near the end of "Maternal Aspiration", Amity requested that she and Luz kept their relationship private so her parents wouldn't hear about it, and Luz agreed. It later became public in "Grom: The Musical (Part 2)".
  • Security Blanket: Otabin, as she kept her own book ever since Eda read it to her after the slayground incident. Before she met Willow and Gus, she made the main character her imaginary friend.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Like Eda, she keeps things stored in her hair (at first) and wears a fake fang.
  • Shipper on Deck: She supports Willow's feelings for Skara, gave Viney encouragement to seek out her own admirer without knowing who it was, and repeatedly makes herself a known fan of what King's got going with Laura. In a downplayed example, she encourages Donna to ask out Cross just to get some experience in the dating game.
  • Shock and Awe: Luz can use glyph cards that emit electric attacks. It's later revealed to be a combo between light and fire magic. When she develops her own innate magic, she starts creating her own electric attacks which she channels through her instruments.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Played With. During visits in the Human Realm starting from "Fairly God-Witches", she alternates her outfits.
  • Spin Attack: In "The Book of King", she starts utilizing these in her cambion form.
  • Sticky Fingers: Being Eda's daughter has given her a talent for pickpocketing, being able to steal a wallet without her target noticing.
  • Suddenly Bilingual: When Luz met Camila for the first time, she greets her in Spanish despite never learning the language before. She would later begin learning Spanish in Book 2.
  • Super-Scream: In Chapter 106, Luz accidentaly uncovers the same kind of scream ability as King and ends up killing Trini with it.
  • Swapped Roles: In a reversal of canon, Luz develops feelings for Amity and kisses her first.
  • Taught by Experience: Willow telling her off for picking fights with people just to defend her friends caused Luz to rethink the kind of friend she is in order to be better. Losing her first duel against Emperor Belos after taking him on alone led her to stop jumping head-first into a battle and to start planning things out.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In the "Underworld" arc, Luz had to work alongside Hunter to rescue Mel's victims but Hunter's betrayal and her & Maya ripping off his arm are still fresh in their minds. They never end up alone until after the rescue is a success, at which point Boscha forces them to apologize to each other. From then on, they agree to work with one another to protect their loved ones.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: She believed she was cursed when she started transforming until Belos told her during their first meeting that she evolved into the same being as he did.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Luz puts her hair into a spiky one for the séance in Chapter 27 and Grom in Chapter 33.
  • Took a Level in: Almost everything since the slayground incident;
    • Badass: All those years of magic and combat training along with her fearless nature makes her a force to be reckoned with;
    • Cynic: She became closed off towards people outside of her family after the event;
    • Idealism: Her cynicism began to fade after befriending Willow and Gus and by the time of the semester exams, she's more open to school and making more friends besides the aforementioned two, the troublemakers and Amity;
    • Jerkass: She invoked being a more aggressive, mean-spirited, abrasive troublemaker to keep people from hurting her in any way;
    • Kindness: But eventually, after putting a strain on her friendship with Willow due to her desire to seek revenge, Luz started to work towards bettering herself, stopped being a jerk and started being nicer to people who deserve it so she could move on from her past;
    • Smartass: Although that doesn't mean she's ever gonna lose her edge at being a constant Deadpan Snarker.
  • Trauma Button: She won't take to being held captive as it reminds her of when she was restrained during the Slayground incident.
  • Trauma Conga Line: The slayground incident only marked the beginning of Luz's suffering: ever since gaining her 'cambion' form, she's been seriously put through the wringer. In order, she got trapped in the Forest of Fear, imprisoned by Belos, nearly petrified, witnessed Puck dying in front of her eyes, nearly killed by the Coachman, absorbed Maya's soul, got injured by Emily and Asi on top of Meteora trying to kill her and Amity during the school war, mauled Hunter thinking he made Amity disappear, encountered the Horned King who tried to steal Maya from her, had to cope with Amity, Willow, and Gus being sent to the Human Realm, and learned that a member of her godfamily is trying to kill her and all of witchkind. And she still doesn't know that Belos plans on possessing her to fight the enemies he made on the Day of Unity.
  • The Unapologetic: An unintended variant. By "Chapter 74: Hexing Out for a Hero", she realizes after her duel against Nina that she never apologized to Boscha for the pepper spray incident. She does so in "How to Save a Life".
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She describes herself before the Slayground Incident as an "optimistic, wide-eyed, naïve, spunky little dreamer."
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: In Book 2, Luz realizes that she always transforms in times of stress, so she begins learning how to control her cambion form. Now she can summon her wings and claws at will.
  • Weapon Specialization: Her bat. Even after bringing it to life, she uses it specifically.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Luz finds herself repeatedly asking this question when it becomes clear that she isn't human anymore. At first she's told that she's a cambion, but this is debunked after Trini's death.
  • Winged Humanoid: During her second cambionic transformation, Luz gains a pair of bat wings, giving her the power of flight. It becomes more in line with the trope when she learns how to summon her wings without fully transforming.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: Has this with Emily, as Luz wears purple with her main outfit while Emily is associated with gold, be it through her uniform or while acting as the Golden Guard.
  • You Killed My Mother: Asi blames Luz for Ms. Torigore's (his mother's) death, as her act of vengeance led to Torigore getting a Cruel and Unusual Death.

    Amity Goodfellow

Amity Goodfellownote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_amity_blight_book_1_4.png
As of Chapter 52

A gifted witch who's the top student in the Abominations Track. She started out as an enemy to Luz and her friends, but befriended them while tutoring the human rebel. She later begins dating Luz and at the end of Book 1, she takes up residence in the Owl House after helping to free the Clawthornes from custody, being labeled a wild witch as a result.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Besides having the same abusive parents from canon, she's mugged by criminals early on, leaving her traumatized. Later, she's not only attacked by said criminals again, but it's revealed she's also being influenced by a demon feeding off her misery and nearly succeeds in destroying her mind. All of this results in her being put in counseling.
    • Because of all the stress from the above and that which comes from looking after her unofficial godsister and girlfriend, Amity has to be given anxiety medication alongside Luz after the Glandus War in Book 2.
  • Adaptational Hairstyle Change: Rather than cutting her hair short after dying it lavender, she leaves it the same length.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: She lacks all of her negative traits (Aesop Amnesia, No Social Skills, No Listening Skills, ect.) that caused her to disregard other people's feelings and opinions before befriending Luz, so she's more understanding to how insensitive she can be. She also doesn't suffer from Love Makes You Dumb syndrome, as she's more withdrawn from Luz after she first develops a crush on her.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: She shows a lot more regret for hurting Willow by ending their friendship, even apologizing to Willow earlier than she does in the parent series. She's also much nicer to Amelia, Cat, and Skara, deciding to be a better friend to them rather than stop hanging out with them altogether.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Technically speaking, Amity falls into this when her eyes change from gold to pink in universe.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • In the show, she and Luz were initially rivals with Luz realizing she was nicer than she let on, becoming her friend, and helping her with her problems which led to Amity developing a crush on her. Here, they've been enemies for years and only start spending time together due to their tutoring sessions. After Amity learns of Luz's hardships, she becomes more sympathetic with her which causes Luz to develop feelings for her that later become mutual. They also hook up faster than in canon.
    • Unlike canon where they had a student-mentor up until the witch's duel that resulted in a loss of respect due to cheating, Amity and Lilith maintain said relationship because the duel didn't happen here. It becomes more heartwarming when it's later revealed that Lilith is Amity's godmother and she starts spending more time with her. Their relationship still takes a hit when Lilith's actions here causes Amity to lose all respect for her, but while they put in the work on repairing their relationship, it sours again when she learns Lilith's the unintentional murderer of her girlfriend's mother.
    • In canon, Amity considered Skara mean and didn't enjoy spending time with her. But here, she decides to give her, along with Amelia and Cat, a fair chance as part of her becoming a better person and comes to see them as true friends.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Thanks to a deal made with Puck Goodfellow, she's become part-Fae, though she had been unaware of it until Bigfoot informed her of this while she was stuck in the Human World.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She has three: Luz calls her "Ams", Puck "Pixie Dust", and Lilith uses "Starlight".
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: Leveling the original Blight Industries without trying is certainly enough to scare her, as she doesn't know what it could mean or how powerful her magic's become after becoming nameless. Manipulating Darius in his abomination state doesn't help matters, nor does nearly killing Hunter during their fight at Eclipse Lake.
  • All There in the Manual: Her middle name is "Mittens" because Odalia was on pain medication when she chose it.
  • Aliens Love Human Food: After her first visit to Earth, Amity slowly takes to human food, with cola becoming a Trademark Favorite Drink.
  • Alternate Self:
    • Has one in the "What If... Lilith raised Luz?" timeline. That counterpart has been friends with Luz since they were babies, but that friendship is challenged after Amity fails to defend Luz from Boscha and lets the Hexside students and staff wail on her.
    • Because of [[The Owl and the Frog]] being an AU to the LCU timeline, Amity has two variants; her witch counterpart, and her Amphibian counterpart, Amara Light.
  • Ancestral Weapon: "Chapter 78: Let's Dip Into the Time Pool Again!" shows that the Sword of Adam belonged to her ancestor from the Deadwardian Era, Adam Blight, who was also a user of abomination magic. This also applies to Ghost, who was Adam's palisman.
  • Ascended Extra: Despite already being a major character in canon, she basically becomes the secondary protagonist here as her life is expanded upon and she appears at points where she didn't in the show. It becomes official in Book 2.
  • Aura Vision: Becoming part-Fae gives her this power, but so far she can only see rainbow aruas, which are unfortunate indicators to couples who've gotten 'hot and heavy'.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Amity shows several times that she knows how to identify illusions from real people or objects based on whether or not they cast shadows.
  • Badass Biker: In "The Ballad of Eda (Part 2)", Amity creates a motorbike from abomination goo after reading a book she got from Gus on human motor travel, which she starts using to travel around Bonesborough. In the aforementioned chapter, she sports an outfit that completely fits the trope.
  • Battle Couple: She and Luz become an effective one after facing Grom together.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: In Chapter 70, Amity admits she's tired of how stressful her life's become and wants to return to the Human Realm as she found it peaceful, dreaming of building a life there with Luz in the future. Unfortunately, the Shapeshifter sends her there using his own portal with no way of returning, separating her from her family.
  • Big Sister Instinct: On top of playing into the "Little Sister" aspect when someone messes with her older siblings, Amity leans into the first one with Levi's sister Kay, who she begins watching over when her brother and father are imprisoned, declaring herself Kay's godsister.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Her now half-cyan uniform and overall personality puts her in this category.
  • But Now I Must Go: Thanks to Mel outing her as half-Fae during the Bonesborough Brawl, Amity is forced to leave the Demon Realm and stay with Dipper at the Ramirez home in Gravity Falls in "Resolutions".
  • Character Development: She carries her canon development of bettering herself after her Heel Realization, rebuilding her friendship with Willow once it becomes clear why it ended in the past, standing up to her parents in order to grow into the witch she wants to be, and becoming a rebellious young witch willing to defy the Emperor for the sake of keeping those closest to her safe and all before the events of Season 1 have passed. However, there's a lot of development she undergoes in the story.
    • Amity never saw any reason to be friends with Skara, Amelia and Cat after years of being forced to spend time with them but rather than permanently cutting ties with them once she stands up to Boscha, she decides to give them another chance as part of her becoming a better person since they befriended Luz's friends. She grows to care for them exponentially and after becoming nameless and seeing them offer their support, she comes to appreciate them being there for her.
    • Going nameless and staying with the Clawthornes caused her to distance herself from her former family, which gave all of them more problems. It isn't until she's forced to go into hiding on Earth that she figures out if she hadn't avoided her problems, none of that would have happened. As such, Amity vows to make amends with the Blights when she can return home.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Her Awesomeness by Analysis with illusions has come in handy a few times: she used it to dissipate Belos's illusions during the Book 1 finale and during the Glandus War, she realizes Bangles, Zepher, and Brian were just illusions due to their lack of shadows.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: As per canon, her uniform was orchid for the abomination track. When she decides to dual-track, her sleeves take the light blue color of the illusion track.
  • Cool Bike: Since Chapter 59, she has learned to conjure a motorbike made from her abomination matter as a way to travel, making her a Badass Biker.
  • Cool Sword: She can turn her abomination goop into many kinds, such as a machete. She later uses the Sword of Adam to take down Meteora and keeps it for herself.
  • Costume Evolution:
    • In Chapter 22, Amity's uniform sleeves go from orchid to cyan to signify her placement in the Illusion track.
    • Downplayed in Chapter 109 when she receives Luz's skull earrings during their mock wedding.
  • Crush Blush: As per canon, she sports these upon realizing her feelings for Luz.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • The B-plot of "Chapter 13: The Talk" focuses on her and her siblings working out their issues with each other.
    • "Chapter 20: Blighted by the Light" shows how she's been feeling helpless since her mugging and working to overcome it, all while coming to terms with her feelings for Luz.
    • Chapters 75 & 77 focus on her hanging out in Echo Creek before setting off to Gravity Falls in order to take shelter at the Mystery Shack.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: After declaring herself nameless and leaving the Blight family, Amity finds herself trying to choose her own future and considers becoming a wild witch or traveling back and forth between realms with Luz once she built a new portal door. After talking with Eda, Amity decides not to pick something out right away and to just pace herself for now.
  • Emancipated Child: Being nameless effectively makes her this.
  • Embarrassing Middle Name: Her canon, already Embarrassing Nickname, "Mittens", is confirmed by Word of God to be this in universe.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: She had two from Luz early on, "Minty" and "Little Miss Perfect". After Luz causes the Abomination track's ghost infestation in the first chapter, she's blamed for it and dubbed "Haunted Amity"/"Amity Horror" for a little while.
  • Emotional Powers: In "Chapter 112: Road to Redwood Highway", Sly mentioms that Amity's Fae powers are linked to her emotions: the stronger they are, the more powerful they can be.
  • The Empath: Because she gains Puck's power, she gains his ability to calm down beasts by sensing their feelings.
  • Evil Stole My Faith: Belos' actions and her meeting several kinds of gods and deities has led Amity to stop believing in the Titan in and becoming an atheist, which gives her common ground with Nina.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In "Escape" Amity, with Amelia's help, dyes her hair lilac purple with brown strands and decides to keep it down. In Chapter 75, Jackie trims down it for her so it's shorter and comes with bangs, as per canon.
  • Eye Color Change: Beginning with Chapter 20, her eyes tend to flash purple, which symbolizes her growing magical power. In Chapter 50, they change from gold to pink to represent her severed connection to the Blight family's magic.
  • Fallen Princess: People consider this after the events of Book 1, since she helped save the Clawthornes from petrification and later disowned the Blight family which means she's no longer wealthy and is seen as a traitor to the empire.
  • First Kiss: As Emira reveals, Amity's first kiss with Luz in "Good from the Bad" doubled as Amity's first kiss in general.
  • Flight: In "Back to the Falls", she discovers that she now has this ability due to her Fae powers.
  • Given Name Reveal: Her middle name was revealed to be "Mittens" in "To Serve".
  • Guilt Complex: After Edric calls her out for always having their parents attention and running away from home while leaving him and Emira behind to deal with them, Amity starts to feel like she single-handedly put her family on the path to destruction.
  • Guilt-Ridden Accomplice: During the second half of Book 1, Amity starts to feel guilty about spying on Luz for Lilith after they start dating and eventually decides to confess.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She was originally a witch, but her deal with Puck led to her becoming half-Fae.
  • Handicapped Badass: Due to witnessing her abomination Phil showing sentience before being petrified in the Season 1 finale, Amity finds herself unable to make a proper abomination in Book 2 so far. However, that leads her to use her sludge in more adaptable ways.
  • Her Boyfriend's Jacket: A female-female example occurs in Chapter 109. After giving Luz her eclipse necklace for the exchanging of personal items in their mock wedding, she receives Luz's skull earrings.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Downplayed. Her mother Odalia is bisexual and previously dated Lilith in her youth, and she's a lesbian dating a girl.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Amity has a penchant for creating swords out of her abomination goo. At the end of the "Glandus War" arc, she claims the Sword of Adam from Emily.
  • An Ice Person: She's shown to have access to ice magic in "Road to Redwood Highway".
  • Important Haircut: Downplayed. In "Escape", Amity has her hair dyed lilac like in canon to symbolize becoming her own witch, but keeps it down rather than getting it cut.
  • Innocence Lost: Up until "Chapter 96: Blight vs. Blight", Amity avoided the topic of sex as a result of how Emira gave her The Talk in the past. At that point, it's destroyed due to the combined efforts of walking in on Edric and Mel and assuming they were going to bone, learning from Nina that Emira and Viney have already done so, and seeing the photos of Lilith and Odalia's affair at the trial between Odalia and her grandparents.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While Amity had a right be upset with Lilith over all of her actions, her repeatedly pushing her godmother away caused her self-loathing to worsen until she gave up her life.
  • Interspecies Romance: Since Chapter 27, she's maintained one with Luz the Human as per canon even with their brief break-up.
  • Irony: Her ancestor Adam made his sword out of iron, her main weakness now that she's half-Fae.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: She spends the majority of Book 1 trying to hide her mugging from her family, then had to accept spying on Luz on Lilith's orders to secure her future. It all eventually blows up in her face and she decides to start being more honest, especially with Luz.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: She does it while facing Grom. She decides to keep it down after dying it lilac.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: After having Luz as hers for so long, she becomes Luz's in "Chapter 67: After the War" since Luz relies on her to keep her grounded due to her PTSD.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: When she was mugged, Bangles stole one of her boots. Later on, one of her boots falls off her foot before the Shapeshifter throws her into the Human Realm.
  • Loss of Identity: Book 2 shows Amity (after losing the ability to summon full abominations and declaring herself nameless) working to create her own path forward and work around all the obstacles that come her way.
  • Love-Interest Traitor: Averted big-time. Amity genuinely loves Luz and didn't want to hurt her, a promise that became difficult to keep the longer she spied on her girlfriend for Lilith. When Boscha outed her, Luz, Gus and several other people believed her to be this but eventually came to forgive her when she made up for her actions.
  • Made Out to Be a Jerkass: She's put in this position after Boscha rats her out as Lilith's spy, causing everyone to believe she was stringing Luz along.
  • Magic Knight: Using the Sword of Adam, which belonged to her ancestor, Amity is granted a suit of abomination armor making her an "Abomi-Knight" just like he was.
  • Master of Illusion: She shows a proficiency in illusion magic after being placed in the track following the Abomination track's ghost infestation. So much so that when Principal Bump offers her the chance to study both that type of magic along with Abominations, she accepts.
  • Meaningful Name: Puck's nickname for her is "Pixie Dust" because she reminds him of Tinker Bell; also doubles as a Shout-Out.
  • Meaningful Rename: After being nameless for a time, Amity decides to take the name "Goodfellow", to honor Puck for all he did for her and Luz.
  • The Mole: She is convinced by Lilith to spy on Luz and Eda so she can learn more about her niece. She eventually decided to tell Luz the truth, but Boscha beats her to it.
  • Morph Weapon: Using her abomination goo, she can create an entire arsenal of different weapons: the most common ones are spiked gauntlets.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In "Resolutions", she comes to see that had she just taken the time to talk to her parents about her problems, her family wouldn't have splintered apart and Alador wouldn't be stuck under Arthur and Destiny's control. There's also heavy implications that she feels remorseful for pushing Lilith away until she gave up her life.
  • The Nameless: She becomes this after renouncing the Blight family name. Subverted after taking Puck's name.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown:
    • After being betrayed twice by Hunter in "Chapter 70: Tragedy at Eclipse Lake", Amity summons several abomination hands to beat him up and comes close to killing him before seeing what she would've done.
    • She later inflicts one on Trini in their Bonesborough Brawl match in "Brawl Night: Part 2" as payback for severely injuring Luz.
  • Official Couple: After clearing things up between her and Luz following their first date, they start dating in "Maternal Aspiration". They break up in "Everything's Gone Wrong" and get back together in "Stranger Danger".
  • Only One Name: From Chapters 50 to 53, she didn't have a last name.
  • Power Fist: Her go-to weapon when using her abomination slime are spiked gauntlets on each hand.
  • Power Incontinence: Becoming part Fae causes problems for her: she's no longer able to summon full abominations (which is also a result of Phil showing sentience prior to his petrification) and when she gets angry enough, she can summon abomination matter without performing a spell circle or even trying.
  • Rebellious Spirit: Once she sees how unjust the Coven system is, she develops the same drive as the Clawthornes to oppose the Emperor and his followers as best they can.
  • Red Baron: She's been labeled the "Pink Hellcat" in the Yokai Realm for defeating the Coachman with Luz.
  • Red Mage: Along with her talent in abominations, she takes to illusions so well, she decides to study both.
  • Romantic Wingman: Gender-inverted in Chapter 112 when she helps Vee practice talking to girls so she asks out Star next time she sees her while giving Clara an opportunity to spend time with Masha.
  • Running Gag: Amity currently has four;
    • Anyone who hadn't met her for themselves refers to her as "the minty-haired girl" (exclusive to Book 1).
    • Amity calling one of the Clawthorne sisters "mom", due to seeing them as Parental Substitutes.
    • Having to remind people that she renamed herself to "Amity Goodfellow" in Book 2.
    • Her Aura Vision causing her to know when people have had sex.
  • Secret Relationship: Near the end of "Maternal Aspiration", Amity requested that she and Luz kept their relationship private so her parents wouldn't hear about it. It later became public in "Grom: The Musical (Part 2)".
  • Self-Imposed Exile: Book 1 ends with her taking up residency in the Owl House after her public attempt to free the Clawthornes from petrification brands her a criminal. Later, Book 2's "Underworld" arc ends with her having to retreat to the Human Realm with Ghost and Acorn until things calm down in the Isles regarding her exposed Fae status.
  • Shed the Family Name: Disgusted by both Arthur & Destiny refusing to swallow their pride in order to get help for their children and Odalia attempting to control her life again while also using people to get her way, Amity disowns herself from the Blight family name, making her nameless.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: In Chapter 75, Amity got a new outfit following a shopping spree with Jackie, wearing an all-purple outfit composed of a shirt with fishnet arm-sleeves, a pink waist belt over her white belt with a purple buckle, ripped jeans and platform shoes. She also sports a red and white striped witch hat, a blue sleeveless right-glove and two wrist rings on her left arm for the majority of her stay in the human realm.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: As per canon, she initially acts superior but hides her true kinder personality. Nonetheless, she grows more rebellious after standing up to Belos and Odalia, gains a significant power boost, and becomes a biker.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Her Fae powers grant her this skill, allowing her to speak with Ghost and the Slitherbeast, as well as animals from Earth and even Acorn, a pixie.
  • Taking It Well: After becoming nameless, Amity finds herself accepting lowered grades for making mistakes and not letting people judge her as she no longer has to do so to satisfy her former parents.
  • Tattoo as Character Type: Of the "Personal Emblem" variety. After Boris gives her the offer, she gets a tattoo of a pink butterfly (representing the changes she's going through) with a dagger in the middle (which serves as a symbol of protection, sacrifice and bravery and a nod to the one Puck used) located on her right shoulder.
  • Taught by Experience: She learned from her mistake of never regarding Skara, Amelia and Cat as her friends being because she never tried reaching out to befriend them.
  • Teleportation: In her encounter with Ms. Heinous during the Glandus War, she somehow does this while her back is turned. Later in "Closing the Gates", she utilizes this while fighting the government agents, having gained some control over it at some point.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: At first she thought her increased magical output was a power boost but when she met Bigfoot in the Human World, he told her she had actually become part-Fae.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: After visiting the Human Realm, she develops a liking of cola.
  • Trapped in Another World: "Tragedy at Eclipse Lake" ends with her stuck in the Human World with Ghost by Puck under the Inner Demon's control, unable to return to the Boiling Isles. She eventually reunites with her friends and returns home.
  • Trauma Button: If Amity gets restrained in any way, she'll flash back to her mugging at Bangles and Zepher's hands.
  • True Blue Femininity: Joining the Illusion track results in her uniform sleeves being colored light blue.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: A twofer case.
    • Declaring herself nameless as a result of learning Lilith cursed Eda at Odalia's suggestion ends up snowballing into her whole family dividing which culminates in Odalia being publicly shamed for her actions, Mel turning Edric against his family, and her being outed as a Fae to the Isles.
    • Her repeatedly pushing Lilith away for not telling her that she ended the everlasting oath keeping Amity from telling Luz she was spying on her, discovering she killed Camila, and being mentally scarred by her affair with Odalia would eventually be the majority of reasons why Lilith decides to give up her soul under the belief that Amity was better off without her.
  • Xenafication: Early in Book 1, Amity becomes traumatized and has a few Damsel in Distress moments that resulted in Luz rushing to protecting her. Although she retains her trauma, she does start working harder so she can face whatever else comes her way.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: For helping to free Luz and Eda and "turning on the Emperor", Amity is branded a wild witch at the end of Book 1, preventing her from returning home to her family. Thus, she's welcomed to stay at the Owl House. Nearly subverted when Odalia tries to bring her home, but becomes inverted when Amity becomes nameless and declares the Owl House her home now, not wanting to return to Blight Manor now that she knows her parents will do anything to remain on Belos' good side.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: Despite her initial hesitance and Belos' attempted manipulation to stop her, Amity willingly sacrifices her home life and public status to save Luz and her family in the Book 1 finale, even though it brands her as a wild witch.

    Eda Clawthorne

Edalyn "Eda" Clawthorne, the Owl Lady

The infamous Owl Lady and Luz's adopted mother known for being a con artist. She has complete faith that her daughter will make it as a witch, no matter what.

  • Accidental Child-Killer Backstory: While the Owl Beast was in control, Eda accidentally murdered her first human friend, Angel Sinclair, moments after bringing her back to the Human Realm and being jumped by Abigail Gates, her father Isaac, and his Department A soldiers trying to kill her. Eda lived with the guilt to this day, and it worsened when she learned that Angel was brought back to life and became Director Gates herself.
  • Accidental Kidnapping: Aside from King as per canon, Chapter 69 reveals that she technically kidnapped Luz as Eda never checked to see if she had any livong family members on Earth.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In addition to the burdens her curse already gave her in The Owl House, Eda also killed a human teenage girl she befriended in her youth when she lost control of her curse.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: As a result of having to raise a human child for fourteen years and spending more time in the human realm, Eda here is far more knowledgeable of the Human Realm than in canon. For example, here she actually knows that possums are real.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Compared to the student-teacher relationship with Mama Bear subtleties they have in canon, Eda being Luz's mother here means she's even more protective and affectionate towards her and truly will do anything for her.
    • Unlike in canon where things between her and Amity start off frosty but grow into acceptance and mutual respect, Eda immediately starts off on friendly terms with Amity when she starts tutoring Luz, acting as a support system for Amity voicing her troubles and accepting the girls entering a relationship. She even allows Amity to stay in her home after the events of the Book 1 finale.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: She proves herself as one early in the series, being overly affectionate toward Luz in public and not realizing how Luz felt when she told Amity a few embarrassing details about her childhood.
  • Amicable Exes:
    • With Stan Pines. Despite the way they left things before meeting again and after unwillingly taking on the responsibilities of parenthood, they often exchange techniques to help their kids and advice to deal with their current issues. It's also strongly implied the two are still attracted to each other.
    • While the level of amicability isn't mentioned, Eda seems to be on good terms with many of her exes such as Raine, Witch Rick, and Blitzo.
  • Badass Longcoat: She wears a red overcoat while tracking down the Tarot Guild in "Chapter 80: Understanding Hunter".
  • Berserk Button: Her canonical one of hurting anyone who messes with Luz remains and since Luz is her daughter, it's taken up a notch.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Four examples:
    • Nicole Hieron was already implied to be a villain but after Eda played a Potty Failure prank on her, Nicole (whose family is known for holding a grudge) starts messing with Luz as payback.
    • An actual villain creation is Emily Tricks: she was an Innocent Bystander Eda cursed with boiling zits at the slayground 9 years ago, which supposedly led to her parents abandoning her. Ever since then, Emily's held a grudge against her and all wild witches and wants to make Eda suffer by taking Luz's life.
    • Abigail Gates is a zig-zagged case: Abigail's responsible for trying to get Eda killed when she was a teenager but it was when she attacked Angel that led to Eda transforming into the Owl Beast and accidentally killing Angel. Abigail has blamed her for the incident ever since, but didn't become a villain as a result of it. However, she indirectly serves as the reason behind Angel being molded into the present day Director Gates.
    • She also caused the rise of the Huntsman in this timeline, although this was another indirect example.
  • Crossover Couple: She previously dated Stan Pines of Gravity Falls, a variant of Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty, and Blitzo of Helluva Boss.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Like in canon, she was cursed as a child. Unlike in canon, she killed a human teenager she befriended who saved her from being raped while in her Owl Beast form.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "The Ballad of Eda" two-parter, "Glandus War: Turning Point", and "For the HECK of It" expand on her backstory in this timeline.
    • "Chapter 79: The Long, the Witch, and the Ninja" has a Flashback B-Plot which shows how she befriended Susan Long as a teenager and would be the reason behind both her relationship with her husband Jonathan and the rise of the Huntsman.
    • "Chapter 80: Understanding Hunter" shows her working with LOWTH to find and rescue Bo after the Tarot Guild kidnaps her.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • In defending Luz from the mob attacking her, Eda cursed several innocent civilians which also included Emily, putting her on the path to villainy.
    • Back in 1986, Eda took Susan's confession letter so she could make sure Jonathan would read it. When he reacted poorly to learning his girlfriend's family were dragons and dumped her, she tried to ease him into it by revealing she was a witch to him; he reacted even worse to this.
    • She admits to Abigail in Chapter 109 that she could've tracked down any living family members Luz might've had before taking her to the Demon Realm: that way, Luz would possibly have had a safer childhood in the Human Realm instead of the mayhem she endured all her life.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: Of sorts. Long before Eda loses her arm, she loses her right eye due to bomb shrapnel.
  • Domino Mask: Wears a black one over her face in "Understanding Hunter".
  • Establishing Character Moment: In "Won't Get Away", Eda initially brushes off Principal Bump's concerns about Luz after she gets in trouble for her prank on Boscha, but when Bump brings up the idea of Boscha's parents getting Luz sent to the Conformatorium, she immediately starts taking things more seriously. Bump proposes a deal where Luz will work to improve her grades while she gets a job as a groundskeeper at Hexside, and even though violating the contract would lead to her and Luz coughing up birds for the rest of their lives, Eda still makes Luz sign it because as her mother, she wants to make sure Luz has the best possible future.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Word of God states that while Eda is a lot of things, she's not irresponsible enough to teach Luz how to use one of the many guns she has in the house.
  • Eyepatch of Power: In response to the following trope, she wears an eyepatch over her right eye beginning in "Chapter 88: The Return of the Witches".
  • Eye Scream: In "Chapter 85: Fallen Angel", Eda loses her right eye as a result of Angel setting off a bomb to kill her.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: She plays herself up as this in "Have a Little Hex with my Friends", calling herself a single mother of two kids who can both be a handful, an independent business woman, and a successful criminal.
  • Glamour: In "Chapter 113: A Long Overdue Reunion", Eda uses a concealment stone that makes her appearance resemble what she'd look like if she weren't cursed (orange hair and both her eyes being gold on top of having both her eyes again and hiding the eyepatch) to avoid drawing attention to herself while in public in New York City.
  • Hidden Supplies: Thanks to Blitzo, she has a secret weapons supply in the Owl House in case somebody's stupid enough to attack her home, as seen during the Glandus War.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Eda's a witch, and she adopted Luz, a human. She still adopts King, a demon, later on.
  • Interspecies Friendship: She befriended three humans throughout her life: Stan Pines (who she also married), Angel Sinclair, and Susan Long, and Blitzo, a Helldemon imp. The former and latter two ended up becoming parents like her.
  • Interspecies Romance: Among all her partners, Eda has dated a human (Stan), a vampire (Lady Clawdea), and a helldemon (Blitzo).
  • Let's Just Be Friends: She had a one night stand with Sandra Storms after the Glandus War and after talking things out, they agree to remain friends since neither of them were looking for a relationship.
  • Like a Daughter to Me: She comes to see Amity in this light because of how close she and Luz become. Once Amity confesses to seeing her as a mother figure, Eda begins calling her her foster daughter in "Chapter 101: Helluva Dad".
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: In "Chapter 16: Mischief Gathering", Eda began keeping the news of her curse worsening from Luz and asked King to do the same so she wouldn't worry about her. When she finally told Luz in "Everything's Gone Wrong" and explained her plan to send her to stay with the Pines to protect her from Belos, it just causes Luz's condition to flare up.
  • Mama Bear: She carries this over from canon, being very aggressive should anything happen to Luz and King. The same goes for Luz's friends with Amity getting more of this since Eda comes to see her as a third child.
  • Mentor Archetype: She becomes a mentor to Amity regarding educating her on how living like a wild witch isn't necessarily a good thing and encourages her to pace herself in deciding her life's dream.
  • Mentor in Queerness: When giving Luz "The Talk" in Chapter 13, the advice she gives Luz is noted to be applicable to guys and girls, on account of knowing her daughter's orientation.
  • Odd Friendship: She's old friends with a coven guard named Larry, and he helps her with both parenting and being able to provide for her family.
  • Open-Minded Parent: She has no problem with Luz dating Amity or her being friends with Puck since she trusts Luz's judgment.
  • Parental Substitute: Book 2 has her becoming a parental figure to Amity, especially after Amity renounces the Blight family name and has a falling out with Odalia.
  • Parents as People: Eda struggled a lot to give Luz a good life and while she was far from perfect, she tries to learn from her mistakes and do right by her kids. In Ms. Traveler's words, Eda's an idiot but very commendable.
  • Platonic Co-Parenting: In Book 2, she takes to raising the kids in her home alongside Lilith, her sister, and Luz's resurrected mother Camila.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Contrary to what Lilith assumed, Eda doesn't blame Amity at all for spying on her and Luz for Lilith since she was scared, vulnerable and desperate to earn Lilith's approval, knowing that Amity truly cares about Luz and would never intentionally hurt her.
  • Replacement Pedestal: After Amity stops seeing Lilith as a Parental Substitute, she begins seeing Eda as such, which she accepts.
  • Save the Villain: In Chapter 101, she agrees to let Cross and Lindsay accompany the rescue team going to the Underworld for the sake of rescuing Emily, taking responsibility for Emily becoming a villain to begin with.
  • Secret-Keeper: In "Resolutions", she and Hunter would both learn that Cross' family were made up of witch-dragon hybrids and keep that to themselves.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She was the only women between the main trio's parents, which is what led her to try becoming friends with Sandra.
  • The Stool Pigeon: At the suggestion of Larry, Eda becomes an anonymous source for the Emperor's Coven and tips them off to criminal activity to make money to support her family.
  • Struggling Single Mother: She starts struggling financially thanks to losing her magic and all her business associates cutting ties with her, not to mention Amity, Lilith, Camila and Kay moving into the Owl House. She is able to make extra money thanks to Larry.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Adopting Luz brought out a softer side in Eda, and she would slowly become more courteous to people, notably her daughter's friends.
  • Tragic Keepsake: "The Ballad of Eda (Part 2)" reveals she's kept Angel's leather jacket ever since her death 30 years ago. She passes it down to Luz in "Prelude to War (Part 3)".

    King Clawthorne

King Clawthorne

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_king_clawthorne_6.png

The tiny, egotistical demon with a high self-opinion, he's also Luz's surrogate older brother who will do anything to protect her.

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Naturally, his bond with Luz is double its canonical strength as he's known her her whole life and being her big brother, King works to help her through her issues whenever they rise with Luz doing the same. Even when it's revealed that King overheard Eda telling Luz the truth about his origins, King doesn't hold it against Luz, having been glad that he'll always be someone important to her.
  • Age Lift: The series started long before "Echoes of the Past" aired, so King's at least 6 years older now as he's living at the Owl House and able to speak fluently by the time Eda brings baby Luz home. Chapter 47 confirms this; Eda found him 6 years before she found Luz, making King 20.
  • Big Brother Instinct: As established above, King has known Luz since she was an infant, so he's quick to try to protect and keep her out of harm's way especially after the Slayground incident.
  • Big Damn Kiss: In "Brooken Home", Laura takes him by surprise and kisses him before returning home to Zootopia.
  • Childhood Friends: It's mentioned in "Closing the Gates" that King's known Jake Long since they were babies due to Eda bringing him with her the last time she visited the Long family.
  • Dark Secret: He does something in Eda's closet that only Luz knows about.
  • Drunk with Power: While in Eda's body in "Swap or Not", he wasted no time causing chaos in the marketplace using her magic. It takes Luz threatening to expose one of his secrets to get him to stop.
  • Everybody Knew Already: He always knew how Eda really found him; he just kept playing along with it because of how much Luz admired him even after she was told the truth.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: Whenever he wants to have his own adventures without the Clawthornes, King apparently spends time with Morton and Tiny Nose.
  • In Spite of a Nail: He starts digging into what he really is and tracking down his father after remembering his past. A bit later, he gets adopted by Eda and takes the Clawthorne name for himself.
  • NEET: For a large majority of the series and before, King had gone the entirety of his life not having to do anything but lounge around the house napping or going on adventures with his family and friends. This comes to an end in Chapter 110: "For the HECK of It" when Eda decides that he needs to get a job so he can start pulling his weight around the house. He protests at first, but lands a job as a pizza delivery guy by the end of the day.
  • Noodle Incident: His Dark Secret of whatever he does in Eda's closet.
  • Older Sidekick: As Luz got older, she started taking the lead in their scams together: of course this is King we're talking about so he thinks she's the sidekick.
  • Older Than They Look: King is 12 years older than in canon, but is still the same size.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: 7 years prior to the series, he overheard Eda telling Luz how she found him on his island. Hearing Luz say he'll always be a king to her made King happy, so he continued playing into the lie.
  • Ship Tease: During the "Underworld" Arc, he gets along with a girl named Laura, who's an otter hailing from the world of Zootopia, and Luz immediately jumps on board that ship. The next story arc shows he's excited to spend more time with her but constantly tamps down his excitement in front of evwrybody else.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: In "Prelude to War: Part 3 ", he takes to wearing purple overalls from Luz's childhood, saying it was time he started wearing clothes now that he's an official Clawthorne.

    Hooty

Hooty

The Owl House himself, a sentient house demon Eda uses as a mobile home and living security system. Granted, he's pretty annoying and gets the least respect from everyone, but he's still part of the family nonetheless.

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: He always does this, from talking to the reader to interrupting the chapter's opening statements. He even once refers to himself as the "greatest character in the story".
  • The Gadfly: In "Brooken Home", he teams up with Luz to rib King about his relationship status with Laura, congratulating him for finally getting a partner after everyone else in the Owl House did.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: A trait he carries over from canon, Hooty tends to irritate people who meet him for the first time by getting invasive with them.
  • Odd Friendship: He manages to gain a friend in Puck Goodfellow, who isn't put-off by him at all. He also retains his canon friendship with Lilith.

    Owlbert

Owlbert

Eda's palisman, a small, wooden owl that forms the head of Eda's staff.

  • Demoted to Extra: He barely appears in Book 1, just matching up the bare minimum of his canon appearances. It gets worse in Book 2 when he hardly shows up at all, his last major role being "The Ballad of Eda" and the last appearance of his staff being "The Hunting Witch". He appeared again in "Closing the Gates".
  • Flat Character: He doesn't really have anything that makes him different from his canon counterpart.
  • Flight of Romance: In "Human Date", he tags along in Luz's purse so she can use his staff to give Amity a flyaround beyond Gravity Falls, which she does the following chapter.
  • I'm Not Afraid of You: Contrary to what Luz believes, Owlbert doesn't fear her for causing Maya's destruction.
  • In Spite of a Nail: In spite of his reduced role, Owlbert is still the first palisman to appear in the series and a major factor in Luz ending up in the Demon Realm.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's the one who found Luz in the car crash, which led to Eda adopting her. This goes two ways: on the one hand, he's responsible for Eda accidentally kidnapping Luz without trying to find any living family members. On the other hand, he prevented Luz having to grow up miserable in Gatesfield.

    Brucy

Brucy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_brucy.png
"Let's bash some heads!"

Luz's black metal bat and signature weapon. After being brought to life, he shows himself to be always eager to knock some heads around.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: He was an ordinary bat until Luz brought him to life using animation magic.
  • Blood Knight: He lives to hurt someone.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He may be made black, but he's not evil: just a little unhinged.
  • Give Me a Sword: A living example. Luz lets Amity wield him against Grom, and she uses him again in "The Rescue" against Warden Wrath.
  • Mythology Gag: A living one, since Luz's beta design utilizes a bat for a weapon.
  • Put on a Bus: After the Glandus War, he joins all the other living household objects in not moving or talking. He doesn't return until "Chapter 104: Friends in Lower Places", when Camila uses him against Yui.
  • Weapon Specialization: He's a living example, as he's Luz's go-to weapon before and after he's brought to life.

    Rocky

Rocky

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_rocky.png
"I'm considered one of the greatest guitars ever played!"

A magic guitar that's gone through several owners. He was stuck in the Owl House basement until he was accidentally brought to life.

  • All There in the Manual: Word of God has confirmed that he's an acoustic bass guitar.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Again, normal guitar brought to life by accident.
  • Blue Is Heroic: His body is colored blue and he's on Luz's side.
  • Master of Illusion: "No Big Deal" reveals he can cast illusions, as he was able to project one of a swamp in Amphibia during the performance between the Bard Beast Girls and Anne and Marcy.
  • Meaningful Name: Rocky's full name is "Ragnarock", which is the event of Norse mythology detailing the end of the world.
  • Not Quite Flight: He can grant his user the ability of levitation while they're playing him.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Rocky is short for "Ragnorock".
  • The Power of Rock: He's a guitar who can channel his magic through people's emotions.
  • Put on a Bus: He falls out of significance after the Glandus War due to acting like a non-sentient household object and Luz continuing to master the lute. He shows up again in "Thank Titan It's Frieday" when King stumbles across him while showing Laura around the Owl House.
  • Stealth Pun: He's a guitar Luz considers using as a weapon from time to time - an axe, if you will.
  • Super-Empowering

    Maya

Maya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maya_18.png

A crab Palisman formerly under the Bat Queen's care. After being damaged and unintentionally destroyed by Luz who devours her essence, Maya's soul lives on in her forcing them to share Luz's body.

  • Ascended Extra: As a major step up from the two brief appearances she makes, she plays a bigger part in this series that makes her a part of the main cast.
  • Blood Knight: She's more of one than Brucy, taking down 30 Glandus students in brutal ways and wanting to kill Emily and Kikimora only for Luz to restrain her.
  • Demonic Possession: While Luz is being tortured by Asi in "Glandus War: Turning Point", Maya takes control of Luz's body and gets them free.
  • Enemy Within: Parodied. Maya initially starts off as antagonistic towards Luz, but begins to work with her instead of against her to find a compromise to their situation.
  • Heroic BSoD: After ripping off Hunter's arm and learning what he really is, Maya falls into a state of shock and silence, refusing to tell Luz what she knows.
  • Jerkass Realization: An offscreen realization. After ripping off Hunter's arm and nearly being taken by the Horned King only for Luz to protect her, Maya goes into radio silence for a while. During that time, she comes to see how much of a psycho she acted like and how she unfairly misjudged and treated Luz. After seeing how hard Luz has been trying to make the "body-sharing" work out for both of them, Maya made peace with her "death" and forgave Luz, advocating to the Bat Queen to forgive Luz as well, which leads to Luz regaining her palistrom wood.
  • Mirror Character: Let's not mince words; she's essentially Luz and Boscha before their Character Development along with Boscha's counterpart in the series. Maya describes herself as competitive, headstrong and tough, all traits that both girls share. However, she's even more stubborn that either of them, has a tendency to go ballistic in order to win a fight (not caring who she hurts as a result) and shows a complete Lack of Empathy and understanding, unable to even comprehend why Luz would forgive Lilith for anything she's done.
  • The Mirror Shows Your True Self: Whenever Luz has to talk to her in private without letting Maya take control of her body or a mental conversation, she uses mirrors which show Maya's reflection.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Chapter 71: The Hunting Witch", she gleefully rips off Hunter's right arm only to discover he's a grimwalker when she catches his scent, being shocked by the discovery and regretting it.
  • Split Personality: Again parodied, as she takes control of Luz's body every time she wants to make her presence known to everyone.
  • Suddenly Speaking: She becomes able to communicate with people without bonding with someone upon possessing Luz.

    The Young Houseguest

Kay Thians

A baby fish demon, Captain Goonla's daughter and Levi's sister who Amity takes responsibility for when the former two are arrested. She hatches from her egg in "After the War".
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Whether one includes all the animated household appliances or not, Kay is the youngest resident in the Owl House.
  • Everyone's Baby Sister: Everyone in the Owl House is very protective of her and will defend her with their lives as Amity would. When Kitsuni's sister Yui comes to kidnap her in Chapter 104 on Oberon's orders so he can use her as a bargaining chip against Amity, Camila, Brucy, Acorn, and Ghost swiftly kick her ass to protect the baby demon.
  • Shout-Out: Kay's name is based off of Kay Lawrence, the character from Creature from the Black Lagoon. Her appearance, as stated by Word of God, looks like a green Koromon with fins and big red eyes.

    Ghost

Ghost

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ghost_7.png

A white Cat Palisman living among the Bat Queen's refugees. She eventually becomes Amity's palisman following the trip to Eclipse Lake.

  • Ancestral Weapon: In staff form, she acts as one since Adam was once her owner and she bonded with Amity, his father's descendant.
  • Ascended Extra: Between her Suddenly Speaking and her past connections to Flapjack, Belos (back when he was Philip Clawthorne), and his boyfriend Adam, Ghost has a far more important role in the Luz Clawthorne Saga than she ever did in The Owl House.
  • But Now I Must Go: At the end of the "Human Realm" arc, Ghost leaves Amity because she doesn't have a set Goal in Life and she doesn't want to repeat what happened with Adam and Philip through Amity and Luz. It's subverted two chapters later when Amity states her greatest desire and the Bat Queen encourages Ghost to officially become Amity's partner.
  • Familiar: As per canon, she serves as Amity's palisman after bonding with her in "Tragedy at Eclipse Lake".
  • Running Gag: She repeatedly desires to eat sentient creatures, first wanting to eat Jackie Lyyn Thomas, who's half-mermaid, and Acorn the Pixie.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Aside from speaking with other palismen and the Bat Queen, Ghost can be heard by Amity even before bonding with her.
  • Thought They Knew Already: She already knew about Amity's Living Shadow and had assumed she already knew about it by the time she was informed about it.
  • Undying Loyalty: Though this is true for palismen in general, Ghost becomes loyal to Amity after bonding with her to the point she joined her in her temporary exile to the Human Realm in "Resolutions".

    Sam (UNMARKED SPOILERS

Sam the Shadow

Amity's Living Shadow, created as a result of her deal with Puck.

  • Evil Counterpart: Discussed and deconstructed. When naming Sam, Amity refuses to call them "Shadow Amity" because it makes her sound like one of these straight out of a crystal ball game. Sam isn't malevolent in any way and is as heroic as Amity.
  • It Can Think: Amity recognizes her shadow as a sentient being since it can talk and is pretty much alive, hence why she gives them a name.
  • It's All My Fault: Sam blames themself for Amity being exposed as a Fae, only for Amity to remind them that Mel was responsible for that.
  • Meaningful Name: Sam's name can alternatively stand for "Shadow Amity", which is ironic considering Amity named her shadow Sam to avoid using this very name and the Evil Counterpart scenario.
  • Significant Monogram: Sam's name comes from the "S" in "shadow" and the first two letters in Amity's name.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Sam admits to Amity upon being revealed to her that they didn't announce their existence to her because she'd been through enough crap already and didn't need learning she's now part fae on top of being stranded in the Human realm.
  • The Voice: Ever since "Stranger Danger", they had been talking to Amity and giving her warning without revealing themself to her. Amity had briefly believed she'd just been hearing Barcus's voice until learning the truth from Sam.
  • Walking Spoiler: She's the living confirmation that Amity's now part Fae.

    Acorn the Pixie

Acorn

A pixie from the Gravity Falls forest who quickly becomes interested in Amity once she learns the witchling's half-Fae.

  • Fugitive Arc: Implied when "Chapter 87: A Tale of Two Palisman" ends with the reveal that pixies on Earth are looking for Acorn.
  • The Runaway: She leaves for the Demon Realm as a manhunt for her occurs on Earth. Chapter 108 reveals she's just a runaway princess who was tired of her mother's strict upbringing.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Word of God has said that she's meant to be Amity's "Tinker Bell".

Luz's Friends

    Willow Park

Willow Park

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_willow.png

A shy, awkward and sweet student at Hexside who's been best friends with Luz for years. She initially studied abominations, but later gained the opportunity to study plant magic.

  • Adaptational Badass: Willow was already a powerhouse in her own right, but now she's taken on all kinds of villains and proves herself to be far stronger than Terra Snapdragon once she gains a Next Tier Power-Up.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Her friendship with Luz changes since they've been friends for 4 years, but hits a bump in early Book 1 when an argument over Luz's Bully Hunter ways causes them to stop talking for a time until them make up.
    • In canon, Skara looked down on Willow just like Amity (was forced to) and Boscha did. Here, they slowly become friends and develop feelings for each other, later becoming a couple.
    • Willow doesn't have a romantic interest in Hunter here; instead they're old friends and while everyone ends their friendship with him after his bugging her friends' homes on Belos' orders, she's the first to give him a chance to earn her forgiveness.
    • The Owl House ended with Willow and Boscha remaining at odds with each other since Boscha refuses to acknowledge Wilow's power, but LC has Boscha eventually accept Willow as being a strong witch after her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Adaptation Species Change: In canon, Willow was originally just an incredibly powerful prodigy in plant magic. Here, she's a demigoddess whose power was gifted to her by her godmother Samshin Halmang, the Korean Goddess of Life.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She has a total of six; "Willow-Wisp" by Luz, "Wise Witch Willow" by Simon, "Flower Girl" by Hunter, "Tulip" by Gilbert, and "Sunflower" by Skara. Keeping in touch with canon, Hunter also starts calling her "captain" after she forms her flyer derby team, but it's downplayed as he also uses it for Skara.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • Zig-zagged with Cross. Both witches specialize in plant magic, but Willow exceeds Cross in magical power. However, that's the only sort of magic she knows, while he's capable of using different kinds of elemental magic.
    • She falls into this against the far more experienced Terra Snapdragon. The Alchemist discovers during his examination of her that Willow's magical aura gives off higher readings than Terra, which may make her more powerful. Sure enough when the two fight each other, Willow unlocks a magical form that makes her far stronger than a Galdorstone-boosted Terra is. Unfortunately, this makes her the perfect replacement for Terra after Belos kills the crone.
  • Ascended Extra: Receives much more prominence in the events of the fic, especially in Book Two when compared to how she was Out of Focus in the first half of Season 2.
  • Berserk Button: Never, ever call Willow a vegan because she loves plant life and will not hold punches when serving retribution.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Mess with her friends or her Skara and she won't be merciful. Just ask Dolly and Nina.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: "Breaking Ties" has Willow airing her opinion of the Blight parents for forcing Amity to end their friendship.
  • Closet Key: In Chapter 48, Amity reveals that Willow was her first crush and thus, how she learned she was attracted to girls.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • In "The Pride Special", Willow is shown to have been Happily Adopted, something she unknowingly shares with Luz.
    • She finds common ground with Gus G. over their shared histories of being bullied in "Closing the Gates".
  • Crush Blush: After the semester exams, Willow begins having these around Skara after being complimented by her.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "Have a Little Hex with my Friends" gives her a B-plot where she spends the day hanging out with Skara and some of her friends at the bazaar.
    • Chapter 79 shows how she's been trying to find a way home with the Gatesfield teens in New York City before meeting Team Dragon in order to do so.
  • Everyone Can See It: Luz admits to her in "Chapter 41: Recovering" that despite all her drama, she picked up on Willow's growing attraction to Skara.
  • Fertile Feet: After Willow gains her new magical form and defeats Terra, Alador sees that grass is growing from every step she takes.
  • Foreshadowing: In Chapter 79, Sara warns Willow that Belos will have plans for her on the Day of Unity just as he does for Luz. Chapter 127 shows that he plans to make her the new Head Witch of the Plant Coven following Terra' execution due to her newfound abilities.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Every time her magic goes off the charts, this happens.
  • Happily Adopted: "The Pride Special: A Skarlow Date to Remember" reveals that Willow's dads found her as a baby in a willow tree and when they couldn't find any parents, they adopted her.
  • The Heart: Between herself, Luz and Gus, she's the wisest and more gentle of the trio.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Her two fathers and pansexuality are more notable in LC than canon since she gets a girlfriend.
  • Homosexual Reproduction: Just like in canon, she has two dads named Gilbert and Sully. Okay, maybe not exactly like canon.
  • It's Personal: She volunteers to help take down Terra because she had been responsible for all of Amity, Gus, and Skara's hardships throughout the series (Amity being mugged and her parents getting divorced, Perry disappearing, and Slasher being outed as a werewolf, thus exposing Skara by proxy) as much as the Inner Demon.
  • The Lancer: She typically acts as Luz's Number Two and later shares the role with Amity.
  • The Leader: She assumes the role of General to Hexside's students in the Glandus War because she's the most qualified person for the position.
  • Magical Girl: While fighting Terra, Willow undergoes a transformation that gives her longer green hair, Glowing Eyes, a Battle Aura, and a green robe with flowers growing in her hair.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: Chapter 128: "What Now?" shows that due to her new magic form, Willow's sclera is now mint green instead of white.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • "The Pride Special" shows that Willow went ballistic as a kid and attacked a slayground of kids, which led to her fathers extracting and locking away said memory from her. This was inspired by the MoringMark comic "Plant Track".
    • In "A Long Overdue Reunion", she wears the same human outfit she wore after the Time-Passes Montage in "Thanks to Them" (green jacket, yellow shirt with bitten leaf icon, and brown pants) while visiting the Long Family on Earth.
  • Next Tier Power-Up
  • Official Couple: In Chapter 45, she asks Skara to be her girlfriend and she accepts, thus making them one.
  • Out of Focus: Compared to Amity and Gus, Willow has the least amount of focus in the "Human Realm" Arc.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Her Next Tier Power-Up causes Willow to gain a new longer hairstyle. Her dads approve of the change.
  • Ship Tease: She and Skara have plenty of moments, especially since they went to Grom together (insisting it was just as friends.)
  • Token Super: Before Jake and Randy joined her party in New York, Willow was the only magical being among the Gatesfieldians helping her, all of whom were human.
  • Trapped in Another World: In "The Hunting Witch", Puck sends her to the Human realm and she's captured by Director Gates' troops outside of Gatesfield.
  • Worthy Opponent: Simon declares her one after their witch's duel due to her strength.

    Gus Porter

Augustus "Gus" Porter

Click to see him in the "Human Realm" arc.
Click to see him as of "The Grim Goblin Strikes"

A young student at Hexside who studies illusion magic, and the president of the Human Appreciation Society. Fascinated by humans, he befriended Luz after she saved him from bullies and is always eager to learn more about humans from her.

  • Adaptational Sexuality: Gus showed himself to be straight since he was attracted to Bria in canon. He doesn't have any sort of feelings towards any girls he attracts in LC, showing that he's aromantic.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: He and Luz met four years earlier and face some turmoil in Book 2 that contrasts their friendship in Season 2; due to Gus' refusal to forgive Amity, he becomes more antagonistic to her as a result which drives a wedge between him and Luz. Luckily, it lasts about half the time it took Willow to make peace with Luz.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Luz typically calls him "G-Man", and Hunter occasionally calls him "Gossamer".
  • Aliens Love Human Food: When he first goes to Gravity Falls, the first thing he does is try pancakes: he naturally enjoys them.
  • Audience Surrogate: Gus joins Luz, Eda and King on their vacation to Gravity Falls in Chapters 18 and 19, allowing him to see Earth and meet the Pines family.
  • Berserk Button: If you mock his mother, he will not let it slide.
  • Break the Cutie: Learning that his human friend Vaggie was killed by Department A agent Michael, his mother Jenny had been in the Human Realm in the five years since she abandoned him, and accidentally killing Michael in cold vengeance, Gus loses all his remaining innocence at the end of the "Human Realm" arc.
  • Butt-Monkey: Throughout Book 2, Gus experiences something that traumatizes him, even less than a week following his reunion Perry.
  • The Casanova: Inverted and Played for Laughs: some characters joke about how Gus often hangs out with several girls they believe he's dating, Eda even refering to him as a young Don Juan.
  • Celibate Hero: He's friends with Mabel, Cat and Amelia but shows no romantic interest in them. In fact he's one of the only main characters not in a relationship or to have had a love interest, the other being Jerbo. Or at least he was, now that Amelia has feelings for him. With the reveal that he's aromantic, it would seem none of them would've had a chance.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Mabel and Amelia both developed an attraction to him, but he didn't notice.
  • Coming-Out Story: After sharing a kiss with Amelia that he doesn't feel anything from along with never feeling romantic attraction to girls or any other gender, Gus gives it some thought and accepts that he's aromantic in "After the War". In "Back to the Falls", Aphrodite helps him feel comfortable about his orientation by telling him he can have queerplatonic relationships with others like him.
  • Costume Evolution: After going goth, he styles his hair in locks with blue and purple ends, dyes his uniform black with white sleeves, and wears new boots and a silver moth belt buckle.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "Have a Little Hex with my Friends" shows him heading off to the Human Realm on his own to interview Dipper for his journalism class, and he meets Vee in the process.
    • "Chapter 52: No Dancing Around" has his anger toward Amity boil to a head as he comes to see how it's affecting his friendship with Luz.
    • "Chapter 73: Viva Last Vegans" has him meet two humans named Vaggie and Fazio when he arrives in Las Vegas who offer to help him get to Gravity Falls.
    • "Chapter 112: Road to Redwood Highway" features him and Eve returning to Las Vegas in order to conduct a séance so Gus can see Vaggie again.
  • Goth: In "Chapter 95: The Grim Goblin Strikes", Gus gets some tips from Eve about being a goth to cope with his lingering guilt from Vaggie and Michael's deaths and embraces an "urban/metal" look.
  • I Miss Mom: Gus spent a long time trying to subvert this by finding other problems to fix, but eventually caves to Luz and Willow and admits he misses Jenny and needs to talk about her with his dad. Subverted when he learns the truth and doubts she even loved him, believing she saw him as an excuse to keep Perry from leaving her.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Besides the ones he had with Eda and Camila, he also befriends Vaggie and Fazio, two human adults who save him from Dr. Frakes.
  • Jerkass Realization: It's thanks to Mattholomule that Gus realized how his grudge against Amity strained his friendship with Luz in Chapter 52.
  • Missing Mom: Jenny Porter, Gus' mom, left him and his father five years prior to the present day.
  • Must Make Amends: Per the advice of Ms. Traveler, he begins apologizing to everyone he ignored and acted agressive to in Chapter 53, starting with the Human Appreciation Society when he rejoins.
  • Oblivious to Love: He was completely unaware that Amelia has a crush on him now. Heck, he hadn't even considered it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After learning Amity's been spying on Luz's family for Lilith, Gus becomes furious with her and is the only one of their friends who wouldn't forgiven her. This bleeds into Book 2, as it starts bordering on spite. And after discovering what happened to his mother, Jenny, he starts to close himself off going as far as to canceling an H.A.S. meeting.
  • One-Steve Limit: He was the only known Gus in the series until Chapter 72, in which Gus Gordon, a human boy, was introduced. Since then, two more "Guses" were either seen or mentioned.
  • Stepford Smiler: Gus has been brushing off his mother walking out on him and his dad for ages until Luz and Willow got him to open up about it. Later, he feels guilty that Vaggie died trying to protect him from Michael and that he killed the Archangel in retribution, which results in his goth phase.
  • Trapped in Another World: He got stranded in the Human world like Amity and Willow in "The Hunting Witch". The following chapter reveals he was sent to the Arizona desert and got picked up by college students.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Gus is dark-skinned and eventually comes out as aromantic in Book 2.

    Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus

Viney Potts, Jerbo Jeepers, and Barcus Barkowski

Three former troublemakers from Hexside and the first batch of students who accepted Luz when she was enrolled in the Detention track. All of them shared the hope of getting to mix their favorite types of magic and would become the first students under the multi-track system.

See here for tropes regarding the three of them.

    Boscha Hieron

Boscha Hieronnote

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_boscha_book_1.png
some caption text
Click to see her in the Detention Track
Click to see her during the "Glandus War" arc

A Potions student who was formerly an enforcer of the "strong rules over the weak" creed at Hexside and was captain of the Banshees. She was one of Luz's main enemies at Hexside, ever since Luz warned her not to mess with her friends resulting in Boscha trying to find a way to put the human in her place. Her attempt to get even ultimately resulted in her mother, Nicole, having her transferred to Glandus High for a time.

  • Adaptational Nice Girl: Following her descent into villainy and subsequent Heel–Face Turn, Boscha starts to become far nicer than she had ever been seen as in The Owl House.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Boscha was Ambiguously Bi in the parent work; here she's confirmed to be pansexual.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Being a more active bully, Boscha targets Luz much more often going as far as to break some of her limbs in their semester duel, slandering humans as witch hunters so Hexside's student body turns on her and outing Amity as a spy so Luz will dump her. Subverted after it costs her everything, thus she starts to go through a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: The Owl House ended with Boscha remaining convinced that Willow was nothing but a "half-a-witch" and refuses to acknowledge Willow's power, but LC has Boscha eventually come to see that Willow's powerful in her own way.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Both of her parents call her "Pink-Eyes"...for some reason.
  • Alpha Bitch: She was this until she loses her status at Hexside at the end of Book One when she is removed from the grudgby team.
  • Alternate Self: Her variant in the "What If... Lilith raised Luz?" timeline is worse than her; that Boscha was more antagonistic toward Luz and outed her as human to Hexside, leading the students in attacking her because she was convinced that Luz would steal her position on the grudgby team. The authors said she'd get worse and declare the school war against Glandus High, not paying for her misdeeds until after the war.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Luz at first. Her rivalry with Luz is a major driving factory in Book One, but by Book Two she has fallen out of this role, especially after realizing how much her grudge against Luz cost her.
  • Arc Villainess: Boscha acts as the overall primary villain of Book 1 as her rivalry with Luz caused a great deal of trouble. She temporarily steps down during the second half and her mother Nicole takes over before forcing her back into it at the end of the book.
  • Ascended Extra: Compared to the fic's parent series and her irrelevance there, Boscha's role is greatly expanded since her rivalry with Luz ends up being the cause of so many events (the Eye Scream moments in Chapter 1, the severity of their exam duel, Boscha causing Luz and Amity to break up which led to Luz and Eda nearly being petrified and by extention, Puck's death). By "Going Through Changes", JP realized and admits she's pretty much been a main character since the beginning.
  • Audience Surrogate: Boscha acts as such for the "Glandus War" arc, during which she sees for herself how things at Glandus work from the inside and so the school and its students can have more screentime.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Boscha's the Alpha Bitch of Hexside and captain of the Banshees with a lot of unchecked power, largely thanks to her mothers never setting any rules or teaching her that actions have consequences. When she eventually gets in serious trouble because of this, she slowly grows out of it.
  • Break the Haughty: In pulling off her revenge scheme to break up Luz and Amity to pay them back for the injury Puck caused, Boscha ends up losing her status and everyone's respect, which caused her to take a good, long look at herself.
  • Closet Geek: "The Ballad of Eda: Part 1" highly implies that she's secretly into the "Good Witch Azura". "Chapter 92: The Gold Hexperience" has her come out and admit it to Luz and Amity, leading to Boscha joining their Azura book club after returning to Hexside.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: In Book 1, she had the yellow sleeves and leggings of the potions track. After her little revenge scheme gets her thrown in the detention track, they're changed to gray. They're turned back to yellow after she is transferred to Glandus.
  • Crossover Couple: She begins dating Tom Lucitor of Star Vs. The Forces of Evil in Chapter 67.
  • Crush Blush: She gets these whenever her crush on Skara is mentioned and has a few when she becomes interested in Tom.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: Not only did she drive her friends away and ruined her chances at getting them back thanks to her revenge plot against Luz and Amity, she also loses whatever chances she had of getting Skara to be her girlfriend since she hooks up with Willow.
  • Disowned Parent: After coming to see how self-destructive following her mother Nicole's philosophy of revenge is, not to mention how she got her other mother and her boyfriend incarcerated, Boscha tells Nicole she's done with her pettiness and never wants to see her again.
  • Everyone Has Standards: For all of her Alpha Bitch traits, Boscha can't stand liars or anyone pretending to be something they're not and refuses to be a snitch. Hypocritically subverted when she herself strays into said territory.
    • Played straight when she is shocked to hear that Luz and Eda have been sentenced to execution, unlike her mother Nicole who is delighted by the news.
  • Fallen Princess: Book 1 shows her in the same social standing as Amity and their posse due to their parents' wealth and status. As the series progresses, she loses her status due to her need for revenge, then her home due to Nicole forcing Tom into a position where he blew it up. Honestly, like Amity she's fine with it.
  • Familiar: Instead of Maya, Boscha is given Athena's boar palisman, Hogarth since she couldn't attend Palisman Adoption Day.
  • Foil: To Emily Tricks.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Her original friends consider her to be very hostile and cruel because of her attitude.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Thanks to Puck messing with her during the first grudgby game of the season, Boscha gets cut across her face by a spike. When it heals, the resulting scar goes from the side of her chin to close to her right eye.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: As it turns out, the reason Boscha told Skara to end her friendship with Bo was because Boscha has feelings for Skara and was jealous and afraid that she'd go out with Bo over her.
  • Hated by All: Everyone at Hexside, even Skara, comes to be disgusted by her for making Luz and Amity break up. It leads to her...
  • Heel–Face Turn: As she realizes how spiteful her behavior was, she slowly begins to undergo one in Book 2.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Though her two mothers' sexualities are unspecified, she is listed as pansexual.
  • Homosexual Reproduction: As mentioned in "Won't Get Away" and shown in "Changes", Boscha has two mothers named Nicole and Athena.
  • Hopeless Suitor: After learning that Skara didn't share her feelings for her, Boscha tried to get over them but realized they still existed when she has Skara end her friendship with Bo. Even when Skara started dating Willow, Boscha retains these feelings despite knowing there's no chance that they're ever goning to get together.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: She gets gutted by Nina when the latter was in her feral state.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: For exposing Amity's deal with Lilith to Luz and the rest of Hexside, Boscha loses whatever hope she had of winning back Skara and her friends, gets suspended from school for a week, removed from the grudgby team, prohibited from playing sports on school grounds and is placed in the detention track once she returns.
  • Magic Staff: She gains hers in "Deserve Nothing" when she bonds with Hogarth.
  • Official Couple: As of "After the War", she's begun dating Tom after coming to see how much he's done for her.
  • Only Friend: After losing all her friends, Book 1's epilogue shows her befriending someone who was just as alone as her: Tom Lucitor. Later subverted when she later befriends Angmar when he returns the kindness she showed in sparing him and bonds with Gavin, Ukla and Hunter (that one initially lasts two days before she learns how he betrayed Luz's trust, but they begin hanging out after he admits who he is to her and her friends.)
  • Out of Focus: She falls into this during the "Human Realm" arc as she gets paralyzed by Demon-Puck in "That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles" and has to stay in the Healing Coven until she recovers in "Shaping Up or Nothing".
  • Shed the Family Name: As of Chapter 113, she's officially stopped using "Hieron" as her last name since she cut Nicole out of her life, instead going by "Saltstar".
  • Shipping Torpedo: A more active one than she was in the show. Not only does she prevent any potential relationships for Skara to develop, she destroys Luz and Amity's relationship near the end of Book 1 after being provoked by Dolly and Nicole.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Her sleeves and leggings become gray after she's put in the Detention track, only for her to gain a Glandus High potions uniform after switching schools. She goes back to her Hexside uniform in Chapter 92.
  • Starter Villain: She was the first antagonist of the series to appear, as Amity was put in a more sympathetic light and Warden Wrath hadn't debuted yet.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: This is her Story Arc in the first half of Book 2; after driving away all her friends over her own tendency to get revenge and becoming a social pariah, she's encouraged by Tom to break free from the Hieron family's creed and standards to become a good person.
  • True Companions: As of "Chapter 99: Brawl Night, Part 1", Amity and Luz have buried any lingering doubts Boscha had about them considering her a friend and being angry about her role in their breakup, Amity especially wanting them to have a fresh start which Boscha agrees to.

    Skara Brooke

Skara Brooke

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_skara.png
Click to see her alternate form.

A Bard tracker and Boscha's former right hand witch, Skara is more friendly to her peers and genuinely cares about all of her friends. Skara is also close with Bo and Willow, the latter of whom she has feelings for. In Book 2, she becomes a multi-tracker studying Beast Keeping.

  • Adaptational Sexuality: She went to Grom with Bat Boy (Raptor as he's known here) in the show with hints of something between her and Viney. Here she's officially bisexual, dating Raptor in the past before becoming interested in Willow.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • While Amity ceased talking to her after cutting ties with Boscha, here they make a fresh start and become much closer friends.
    • In a reversal to never interacting with Luz, Skara slowly warms up to her when she joins the Bard track and by the time they join the Beast Keeping track, Luz has accepted Skara as a friend.
    • After being antagonistic towards Willow in canon before joining her flyer derby team, here Skara slowly grows to see her as a friend and develops a crush on her, later becoming her girlfriend.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Chapter 47 reveals that while she's still a witch, she's also a werewolf as she inherited lycanthropy from her father, Slasher.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Cat calls her "Ska" in Chapter 31 and Luz reuses the name almost 50 chapters later in "Understanding Hunter".
    • Building off of it, Willow calls her "Ska-Love" in "The Gold Hexperience"; said chapter also has Hunter beginning to call her "Captain" like he does with Willow since they're co-captains of the Emerald Entrails.
    • After Nina comes to see Skara's family as her own, she takes to calling Skara "kitkat", which means sister in werecat culture.
  • Ascended Extra: She's much more prominent here than in canon thanks to her own character development, relationships with other characters being explored further, and her family life being expanded on; as a result, she was confirmed to be a main character during Book 2.
  • The Beastmaster: She joins the Beast Keeping track alongside Luz in Book 2 in order to learn to work with her inner wolf.
  • Beta Bitch: Starts out as this, but eventually outgrows it by the end of Book 1.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Skara may be one of the nicest characters in the cast, but that niceness has its limits. She lays into Boscha for causing Luz and Amity's breakup and hypocritically justifying it as exposing a pair of liars near the end of Book 1, comes close to attacking Boscha in her wolf state in "I was a Teenage Adult Witch", and ruthlessly tears into Donna for trying to make Nina jealous after rejecting her feelings in "Thank Titan It's Frieday".
  • Character Development: While she starts out as Boscha's lapdog and submissive Beta Bitch like she was in canon, over the course of Book 1 she learns to be more assertive and is able to stand up to Boscha's Toxic Friend Influence while taking responsibility for her own actions, apologizing to both Bo and Willow. This also causes her to start thinking about who she wants to be friends with rather than who she is just expected to be friends with, which eventually results in her expanding her usual social circle by hanging out with Willow's friends more and ending her friendship with Boscha after she exposes Amity's deal with Lilith to the entire school.
    • Book 2 has Skara dealing with inheriting her father's lycanthropy, forcing her to live with the inner wolf inside of her.)
  • Costume Evolution: After joining the Beast Keeping track in Chapter 53, Skara's uniform leggings became orange instead of red.
  • A Day in the Limelight: She has her first starring role in "Blindsided", leading all of her friends in revoking Nicole's suspending Luz, Amity, Willow and Gus from Hexside.
  • Daddy's Girl: Skara's father Slasher cares deeply about her as she does him, Slasher even obtaining a log of palistrom wood so they can carve her palisman together.
  • Familiar: She finishes carving her palisman, a cricket named Jimmy, with her father by "The Ballad of Eda (Part 1)".
  • First Kiss: She became Willow's in "The Pride Special" at the end of their first date. A flashback reveals that Boscha stole hers.
  • Foil: To Nina Fangs.
  • Former Friend of Alpha Bitch: She and Boscha stopped talking after Skara tells her to accept her friendship with Bo. Skara completely cuts ties with Boscha after she destroys Luz and Amity's relationship.
  • Grew a Spine: At the beginning of Book 1, she was submissive to Boscha and didn't step out of line, which is what resulted in her ending her friendship with Bo in the first half of Book 1. By the end of the book, she is able to stand up against Boscha and later Nicole in Book 2.
  • In the Hood: She wears a red hoodie as part of her human attire while visiting the Longs.
  • Magic Staff: Unlike the rest of her friends, Skara carves her palisman in order to obtain her witch's staff.
  • Meaningful Name: Her occasional nicknames are a nod to ska music, which holds meaning due to her being a bard.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Skara doesn't have a last name in canon, and her palisman doesn't have any name.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She's well known for having a rather morbid imagination. For example when being attacked by a giant carnivorous plant, she cries out that it's not how her death fantasies turn out.
  • The Nose Knows: "The Glandus War: Turning Point" shows that her werewolf side comes with this ability, allowing her to sense which Glandus illusionists are real or illusions and directing everyone so they can defeat them.
  • Oblivious to Love: She never had any idea that Boscha was into her. The Pride Special implies and Chapter 66 confirms this isn't the case.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: If Skara is ever mad, you know the gravity of a situation is heavy.
  • Official Couple: As of Chapter 45, she's finally become one with Willow.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: Although having little interaction with Willow in canon, she becomes this to her here.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her lycan form has red eyes; she was very aggressive when she first transformed.
  • Red Mage: She initially only studied in the Bard track, but after her first transformation into her wolf form, she enrolled in Beast Keeping in order to learn how to control it.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Coming from an upper-class family, her father spared no expense for her 15th birthday and later buys her some palistrom wood (which is said to be very expensive due to its rarity) so they could carve her own palisman together. Yet despite her privilege, Skara is a Nice Girl who isn't actively mean like Boscha.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Skara has a small case of this as her ending her friendship with Bo coupled with a talk from Willow has her evolving out of her Beta Bitch disposition to become nicer to people.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Skara's a dark-skinned witch and a bisexual girl.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: She was an unintentional helper in the Inner Demon's plans twice:
    • In Chapter 29, she aids the Inner Amity in extracting memories not knowing she plans to destroy the one symbolizing Amity's feelings for Luz. Skara does try to stop her, but fails and Inner Amity burns up all of the memories by mistake, putting Amity at risk of being mentally destroyed.
    • Skara's actions in the above example allowed Dolly to acquire the memory of Amity's deal with Lilith to spy on Luz and Eda, which she gives to Boscha, who exposes the secret to the entire school including Luz, causing her to dump Amity and ultimately end up alone in the Forest of Fear and at the Inner Demon's mercy.
  • White Wolves Are Special: Her werewolf state is depicted with white fur.

Others

    Lilith Clawthorne

Lilith Clawthorne

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_lilith.png

Eda's older sister, Luz's adopted aunt and Amity's mentor (as well as her godmother), Lilith had been known as the head of the Emperor's Coven for years. During the events of Book 1, she begins looking into why Emperor Belos has taken an interest in Luz while using Amity to spy on her and Eda. By the end of Book 1, she betrays the coven to save her family and joins them in exile.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: She had been responsible for Camila's death and thus Luz growing up on the Boiling Isles and eventually becoming a target for Belos. She eventually become a hated figure in the Isles for cursing Eda among other things.
  • Adaptational Badass: Lilith eventually bonds with the Raven Beast within her to gain a harpy form like Eda faster than she did in canon, making her stronger in battle. Both forms also allow her to use lightning magic, and she later develops a Flash Step ability.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: Several of Lilith's worst moments in canon aren't present here such as tricking Amity into cheating during her duel with Luz, trying to brand Luz while she was stuck in Eda's body, and trying to kill Luz in order to force Eda to exert her power.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Long before Lilith was revealed to be an aromantic asexual in canon, she was shown to be bi here, having previously dated both Odalia and Stanford Pines in the past.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair gains white streaks from being brought back to life in addition to the grey from splitting Eda's curse. In "Chapter 82: Shaping Up or Nothing", she's dyed her hair back to red while keeping some streaks of dark navy, making her hair four different colors.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Rather than the student-mentor relationship that went south due to a loss of respect by cheating, Amity and Lilith maintain said relationship because the duel didn't happen. It's later revealed that Odalia named Lilith as Amity's godmother and she starts spending more time with her after learning about Luz. Their relationship still takes a hit when Lilith's actions here causes Amity to lose all respect for her, but while they put in the work on repairing their relationship, it sours again when some of Lilith's more unintentional misdeeds saw the light of day.
    • In the show, Lilith hardly acknowledged Luz during the first season and when she did, she belittled her and didn't think she was capable of much due to her humanity. Here that's how it starts, but as time goes on, Lilith begins looking into why Luz's existence was kept secret from her wanting to protect her, seeing the human as family.
    • The Season 2 premiere hints that Lilith resented Hunter because he got special treatment from Belos. While she still holds contempt for the Golden Guard, Lilith respects Hunter before learning he's the Emperor's right-hand man and later comes to bond with him and act as a Parental Substitute for the boy.
  • Amicable Exes:
    • Lilith and Odalia were this. Despite their break-up, they remained professional and stayed on good terms with each other afterward, at least until Odalia learned that Lilith was using her daughter to spy on Eda and Luz without her knowledge. They eventually got back on good terms after Amity went missing.
    • She also has an averted case with Ford Pines: Ford left the Boiling Isles due to distrust in Emperor Belos' motives and asked Lilith to join him. She refused due to believing Belos won't cure Eda if she abandons him, thus Ford knocks her out with a potion before escaping.
  • Ascended Extra: While a major character in canon, Lilith gets promoted to main character here, especially in Book Two when she decides to stay at the Owl House rather than leave with Gwendolyn at first.
  • Broken Pedestal: Amity thought the world of Lilith's opinion of her, all her support and words of encouragement, and Lilith cherished it. Sadly, she turned Amity against her when Amity learned she had canceled out the Everlasting Oath keeping her from telling Luz about her spying on her for Lilith. While Amity would slowly re-accept Lilith in Book 2, she no longer saw Lilith as a surrogate mother. The pedestal was shattered even more when Amity discovers Lilith killed Camila, agreeing that Lilith should leave the Owl House.
  • Character Tic: She seems to have had a habit of brushing her hair when nervous since her teenage years.
  • Commonality Connection: Lilith seems to have a habit of bonding with other intellectuals over various subjects such as Ford (who she dated for a brief period), Marcy Wu and Hunter.
  • Condescending Compassion: While Lilith cares about her family, her lack of empathy and headstrong way of thinking causes her to either look down on them or not understand their feelings. Along with her trying to get Eda to join the Emperor's Coven and believing she can't take care of Luz properly, she drives Luz away by telling her she can't be a witch, which causes Amity to alienate her in addition to resenting her for making her believe she was still under the effects of the everlasting oath.
  • Dark Secret: She was responsible for the car crash that led to Camila's death and Luz being adopted by Eda. She confesses to Luz in "Going Through Changes" and everyone else in the Owl House finds out in "That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles".
  • A Day in the Limelight
  • Deal with the Devil: Her canon deal with the Emperor to cure her sister's curse aside, she's now been forced to accept one from the Baron as a result of him saving her life.
  • Flash Step: Similar to Hunter, she develops the ability to do this when in her harpy form. She later finds she can cut down enemies if she uses this in conjunction with her lightning powers.
  • Forgiveness: She gains Eda's for cursing her in "I Was a Teenage Adult Witch" and Luz's for causing Camila's death in "Going Through Changes". She doesn't gain Amity's as their relationship worsens due to several events beyond their control. That changes in "Resolutions" when Amity forgives her for everything after learning she's under Baron Samedi's thumb and tells Lilith she doesn't want her to cut herself out of her life.
  • Hated by All: No doy after everything she did in Book 1 and a few moments afterward: using Amity to spy on Luz was considered disgraceful to everyone, telling Luz she couldn't be a witch and Luz learning she cursed Eda lost her her respect, not telling Amity when she released her from the Everlasting Oath along with her condescension towards Luz cost her Amity and Odalia's respect too, her deal being revealed at Hexside has made the students suspicious of her, the Bat Queen and Maya loathe her for following the Emperor's orders to confiscate every recruit's palisman and overharvesting the palistrom trees, Tres considers her the bane of his existence for not helping the basilisks making him vow to end her life, and the entirety of the Isles demand her blood after her cursing Eda is revealed by Kikimora during the trial against Odalia. While everyone in the Owl House forgives her for her transgressions, everyone else sees her as a controversial figure.
  • It's All My Fault: Once Lilith learns that she murdered Camila, she takes responsibility for all of Luz's suffering, blaming herself for making Luz a target for Belos. She would later take responsibility for Angel's death as well due to giving Eda her curse.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: She spent 30 years keeping the truth about cursing Eda buried. In Book 2, she has to keep the truth about causing Camila's death under wraps out of fear of Luz's retribution.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Along with the grey streak from splitting Eda's curse between them, her hair also gets a few white streaks due to Dr. Bride using electricity to bring her back to life.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: Lilith foregoes telling Amity that Odalia suggested she curse Eda because she didn't want to make their relationship worse.
  • Mama Bear: "Godmama" Bear, regarding Amity. Still, Lilith is fiercely protective of Amity and won't let anyone harm her. She later develops the same protectiveness towards Luz and King.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Lilith's raven palisman is named "Edgar" in the story.
  • Parental Substitute: In Book 1, Amity saw her as a surrogate mother when she started getting closer to her. Due to Lilith's actions, Amity replaces her with Eda in this position in Book 2. She would later become one to Hunter in order to give him a positive role model.
  • Platonic Co-Parenting: After moving into the Owl House, Lilith helps with raising the kids in alongside her sister Eda. She later has to begrudgingly do the same with Camila when she's resurrected until her confession, at which point she leaves to stay with her parents.
  • Secret-Keeper: In "The Errands in the Willows", she becomes one for Cross after discovering that his mother's a Clawthorne.
  • Shock and Awe: Lilith is able to shoot lightning bolts through the streaks in her hair while she is in her raven beast state.
  • Super Mode: In "Understanding Hunter", she managed to gain a harpy form after bonding with the Raven Beast, giving her the power to fight back against the Inner Demon.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Being an Adaptational Nice Girl, her causing Camila's death portrays her in a far more sympathetic light than in canon.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: With everything Lilith had been dealt in "Blight vs. Blight" (having all of her dirty laundry aired during the Blight trial) and "Way Down to Mel's Town" (being mentally tortured until she allowed Baron Samedi to claim her soul), Lilith gets a massive one in "Resolutions" when Amity forgives her for her actions after seeing what pushing her away for them did to her.
  • You Killed My Mother: The Book 1 epilogue reveals she was the one who killed Camila, which led to Luz being adopted by Eda.

    The Golden Guard/Hunter

Hunter/The Golden Guard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_hunter.png

The nephew of Belos, a member of the Emperor's Coven of high ranking who was entrusted by his uncle to keep an eye on the Owl House and its occupants, specifically Luz.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Hunter actually has more baggage than he already did in the show: his dedication to Belos leads him to attempt taking Lilith's life, betray Luz by capturing her and Eda, losing his friends and boyfriend when he bugs the Owl House, and getting his arm ripped off by Luz in a fit of fury.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: "Any Sport in a Storm" reveals that Hunter has No Social Skills due to rarely interacting with people his own age. Here, he befriended Luz when he was 12 due to regularly sneaking out of the castle, meeting with her and her friends to hang out over the years and entering a relationship with Edric a few months prior to the series.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: First appears during the fic's version of "Something Ventured, Someone Framed", long before his canon debut in "Agony of a Witch".
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Hunter is gay and dating Edric at the start of the story instead of bisexual and getting Ship Tease with Willow.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • While he met and befriended Luz, Willow and Gus in the present day, things have changed in that he's got four years of friendship and history between them. Hunter met Luz four years ago when Hunter came to Eda's stand, insulted the both of them and was chased off by Luz attempting to attack him with a golf club. They ended up getting on Tibbles' bad side, were chased by his bodyguard and Luz had to save Hunter due to his lack of magic. Out of sympathy, Luz sells Hunter martial arts books and some free glyph cards to defend himself. Since then, they've been close friends, but she had yet to learn about his status as the Golden Guard. Until "Deserve Nothing", that is.
      • What's more, Hunter and Willow don't show an attraction in one another since they have different love interests here.
    • His relationship with Lilith was hinted to be a one-sided case of jealousy on her side due to the special treatment Belos gave him. In LC, he's respectful to her while in his civilian identity, on account of almost killing her and feeling immense guilt over it.
  • Ambiguously Related: In "Deserve Nothing" he believes that his father was the previous Golden Guard and his mother was Vina Charmspell, the previous head of the Emperor's Coven. Whether that was true or not is eventually answered with the revelation that he's a grimwalker, so it's false.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Maya tears off his entire right arm while she and Luz are maiming him in "The Hunting Witch".
  • Artificial Limbs: Thanks to Dr. Bride, he's given a robot arm to replace the one Maya torn off, making him a Cyborg.
  • Ascended Extra: Plays a significant role in the events of season one and becomes a main character by the time of the "Glandus War" arc.
  • But Now I Must Go: He stayed with Lilith and her parents starting in "Chapter 82: Shaping Up or Nothing" after he recovered from his coma and would eventually return to the castle in Chapter 107 to begin spying on Belos for the Clawthornes.
  • Childhood Friend: He met Luz a month after she met Willow and Gus, so they've been friends for 4 years.
  • Cool Board: He acquired a skateboard from Eda's human junk stand and often uses it to get around when off-duty.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Zig-Zagged. At first he's completely loyal to Belos and befriending Luz doesn't do much to make him doubt that what his uncle does to people is wrong. Even after he loses all of his friends, his belief is unbreakable. After he starts staying with Lilith and her parents, he slowly starts to become loyal to them, and when Abel finds him in Chapter 92 and tells him that Belos wants him to return to the castle whenever he's ready, it seems like he's going to take the opportunity to go back to his uncle. This is subverted in "Blight vs. Blight" when he turns out to have told Lilith about the offer, and he flat-out rejects returning to the castle after the humiliation Lilith was dealt in the trial, refusing to leave her in her time of need. In "Resolutions", Hunter swears his loyalty to the residents of the Owl House, becoming their spy so they have someone in the castle looking into Belos' ties to the Horned King, the Day of Unity, and to ferret out any remaining Tarot Guild members within the Emperor's Coven.
  • Cyborg: Becomes one in "Understanding Hunter" when Dr. Bride replaces his lost right arm with a robot arm.
  • A Day in the Limelight
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: Unlike in canon, Hunter loses his right arm which may spare him from the Day of Unity now that he lacks an arm with a coven sigil.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Because of the odd scent he gives off, Nina takes to calling him "Smelly" in "The Gold Hexperience".
  • Evil Former Friend: The revelation of his dual identity results in his friends cutting ties with him now that they see him as a backstabber.
  • Glamour: He's given a concealment stone to hide his appearance in public while staying with Lilith and her parents, which gives him dark skin and blue eyes.
  • The Mole: Belos uses his friendship with Luz as a way to monitor her growing cambion form. She's naturally pissed off when she learns what Hunter's doing.
  • Morality Pet: He continues to be one for Darius, and unlike canon, he earnestly acts as this for Belos.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: Between all three Golden Guards, he't the In-Between to Cross's Nice and Emily's Mean due to being allied with Belos (at first) and wanting to help Luz as best he can.
  • Official Couple: Chapters 33 and 34 reveal he's been dating Edric in secret for months. Edric dumps him in Chapter 56 when he learns Hunter is the Golden Guard.
  • Properly Paranoid: Upon meeting Ms. Traveler, Hunter sees something fishy about them due to their similarities with Abel. As such he begins to wonder if Abel's a far greater threat than Belos.
  • Reverse Mole: To start making up for spying on his friends, Hunter decides to spy on Belos for them in order to learn about his plans for the Day of Unity and the Horned King.
  • Secret-Keeper: In "Resolutions", he and Eda become one for Cross after learning of the Drakescale family's Dragon Ancestry.
  • Signature Scent: During the Glandus War, Nina notices that Hunter doesn't smell like an ordinary witch, instead having an odor she can't identify. In "The Hunting Witch", Maya figures out what it is after tearing off his arm: palistrom essence, foreshadowing the Internal Reveal that Hunter is actually a grimwalker.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • Averted in "The Gold Hexperience"; at first, all of the Emerald Entrails but Willow are hesitant to include him on the team because of his actions, but he works well with all of them in both of their flyer derby matches that it no longer acts as an issue.
    • The "Underworld" arc shows that he and Luz can barely stand to be around each other due to Hunter's betrayal and in light of Luz/Maya ripping off his arm. They never interact with each other alone until Boscha forces them to clear the air with one another, at which point they apologize for what happened between them and agree to work with one another to protect their loved ones.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He have this sort of friendship with Luz, often trading insults but otherwise having a great deal of respect for each other. At least until she learns how he's connected to Belos.
  • We Used to Be Friends: This happens to Hunter and Luz after the events of "Deserve Nothing", where she learns his dual identity and develops a hatred towards him for lying to her about his loyalty to Belos and nearly killing Lilith. This extends to all of Luz's friends too, as they're shocked that he was lying to them all that time. It's slowly being subverted after Willow and Gus start giving him a second chance and while Luz isn't as accepting to the idea, they agree to be allies against Belos.

    The Resurrected One (UNMARKED SPOILERS

This character is a Walking Spoiler. Therefore, all spoilers will be unmarked here. You Have Been Warned.

Camila Noceda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_camila_comes_back_chapter_27.png
"I regret being unable to see her grow up myself, but it is more than enough to know that my little girl is alive and loved."
Click here to see her after her resurrection

"I'm not really sure what I am, but I'm here now and I've been given a chance to see you again, to hold you again, and to love you again."

Luz's human mother, who was a heathcare worker in Minnesota. She perished in a car crash but is briefly summoned in a séance to reunite with her teenage daughter. In Book 2, Baron Samedi brings her back to life and she stays with her daughter to make up for lost time.

  • Accidental Murder: The Book 1 epilogue reveals her death was one.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Her relationship with Luz suffers from poor word choices in this series, as she isn't able to accept her daughter's life in the Demon Realm after living in the Owl House for a short amount of time and calling Luz "not normal" as a result, straining things between them.
    • Camila doesn't meet any of Luz's friends until Season 3: here, she meets them all midway through the events of Season 1 and grows closer to all of them, Amity especially.
    • Camila also doesn't meet the Clawthornes until the final moments of the series but in the LCU, she meets them earlier as well. She develops envy towards Eda for getting to see Luz grow up and comes to hate Lilith for killing her.
  • Age Lift: Regression; Camila is 14 years younger than in the parent work. Justified as according to Dr. Bride she looks like she did when she died because she's basically a living memory, that it's how her mind is coping with her resurrection.
  • Back from the Dead: Through necromancy on the Baron's end, Camila is brought back to the world of the living in "A Surprising Visitor".
  • Barred from the Afterlife: After her death, her spirit stayed in a waiting room (which represents limbo) where souls end up if they're either unable to move on to the "good place". She stayed there until the séance, and ended up right back there until her resurrection.
  • But Now I Must Go: Between Chapters 109 & 110, Camila makes the decision of leaving for the Human Realm as Luz is in good hands with her witch family and friends and Camila needs to be her own person. Since Luz will be staying on Earth once she completes her remaining business in the Boiling Isles, Camila takes a head start to prep for when she comes and to spend time with Abigail and Clara in the interim.
  • Casts No Shadow: Camila is a shadow, so she doesn't have one of her own.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror
  • Connected All Along: She reveals in "Chapter 69: That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles" that she was friends with Abigail Gates before she died and even asked her to be Luz's godmother.
  • Death by Adaptation: In this universe, she died in a car crash when Luz was just a baby.
  • Living Shadow. Camila literally is one, as Puck's shadow was used as a vessel for her soul to take form from.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: While Camila was told not to mess with the elixirs in Chapter 52, she wasn't informed of the Clawthorne sisters' curses until 17 chapters later.
  • Open-Minded Parent:
    • Upon meeting Amity, she gives her blessing and support for her dating Luz.
    • Zigzagged with Luz's life in the Boiling Isles. Camila initially goes along with the chaotic way of life in the Demon Realm, but later refuses to accept the idea that it's practical for Luz to have been raised there and it puts a strain on their relationship.
  • Platonic Co-Parenting: After coming back to life Book 2, she does her best to adjust to help Eda and Lilith with looking after Luz, Amity, King, and Kay.
  • Posthumous Character: She was already dead when Eda found the crash.
  • Unfinished Business: At first, Camila thought her spirit couldn't rest until she made sure Luz was taken care of. Following the séance, however, she realizes something else is stopping her.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is very difficult to mention anything about her after she comes back to life in Chapter 50.

    Emily Tricks

Emily Tricks

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_emily_tricks.png

A Senior and the "Queen of Glandus High", being the strongest student in her school and the top of its food chain. She has a grudge against wild witches because she was a victim of the Boiling Zit incident.

  • Affectionate Nickname: In "Chapter 115: Thank Titan It's Frieday", Zee is shown to have dubbed her "Mily".
  • Alpha Bitch: She couldn't embody this better if she tried: she's the top student of Glandus High, she has gold sleeves and leggings as part of her uniform and follows the school's "strong rules the weak" rule to the letter. She's even known as the "Queen of Glandus".
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She has black hair and is worshipped and respected by the entire student body of Glandus (at least until they learn she duped all of them by lying about being an illusionist.)
  • Alternate Self: She's confirmed to have one in the universe where where Lilith is Luz's mother. Said alternate self is a Nice Girl who proudly embraces her illusion magic since she never went through the boiling zit incident, even becoming one of Luz's best friends.
  • Always Second Best: "Chapter 98: Rings of Fire" shows she felt this way towards Riley Strange for beating her in a flyer derby match in the past with their illusions, and they still runs circles around her in the present. The same chapter has her develop this kind of mentality towards Cross thanks to Adrian planting the idea that the boy would upstage her into her head.
  • Always Someone Better: Emily proves herself to be far more combat-capable in human fighting techniques than Luz had ever been, having trained herself in Chinese Martial Arts and spending their whole duel in "Prelude to War, Part 2" mopping the floor with Luz who only lands a single hit.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: She has green skin, a trait she was shown to have inherited from her mother.
  • Amazon Chaser: Emily shows that she's attracted to girls who have alternate forms, blushing hard when she sees Lindsay turn into Madstream or Zee as a dragon for the first time.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It is unknown how much of Emily's story about her parents abandoning her after she was cursed with boiling zits is accurate. There's also no hints as to what track she's in. "Glandus War: Turning Point" reveals that she is secretly an illusionist.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Her initial drive to succeed came from years of being groomed to be the strongest witch, and her determination not be a burden to her surrogate family causes Emily to ignore how her actions affect people. She wouldn't stop until she accomplished her goals.
  • Amicable Exes: Subverted with Glinda. After they're separated and Glinda starts to see just how abusive Emily was to her and how toxic their relationship was, Glinda breaks up with Emily, which leaves the illusionist speechless.
  • The Apprentice: At the end of "After the War", she agrees to become Adrian Graye's on the condition so she can get out of the Conformatorium. "A Coven Day Disaster" shows it's official as she's now in the Illusion Coven.
  • Arc Villainess: She's the main villain of the "Glandus War" arc, intending to conquer Hexside to take back its grounds for her school while also making several plays to kill Luz during the war in vengeance for Eda cursing her as a child.
  • Arch-Enemy: She shares the role of Luz's with Belos after Boscha falls out of it, though Emily is more actively antagonistic against Luz than Belos currently is.
  • Ascended Extra: Following the "Glandus War" arc, Emily would continue to play a major role serving as the Golden Guard on Graye's orders while Hunter is recovering before she starts going through a Heel–Face Revolving Door to become a better person. As a result of this character arc, she gets placed on the main cast during the "Tarot Guild" arc later in Book 2.
  • Atrocious Alias: In "Coming Off a Little Shystream", she calls herself "Mildred Tracks" when introducing herself to Bloom and Colt's friend Mrs. Crissy in her glamour disguise. She keeps it for the duration of its use.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: She manages to win the Gland Prix, but only because Amity and King were forced to forfeit when Owlbert took off to find Eda. She uses her interview to announce war on Hexside.
  • The Berserker
  • Breakout Villain: She wasn't meant to return after the "Glandus War" arc, but she was spared, was made Graye's apprentice, and her backstory would eventually be revealed.
  • Break Them by Talking: Her signature tactic, she often attempts to undermine people's confidence in themselves and those close to them while trying to turn them against Luz and her family. However, the people she applies it to are too loyal to Luz to even consider listening.
    • In "The Ballad of Eda, Part 2", she taunts Amity during the Gland Prix by bringing up how she disowned her family.
    • In "Prelude to War, Part 3", she meets Willow and Gus on their way to school to discourage and insult both of them, Willow because she thinks she isn't fit to lead and Gus for being an illusionist.
    • In "Glandus War: Turning Point", she tells Gus that she knows his father hasn't been home for a while and he's been staying with the Parks with the intent of "sympathizing" with Gus as she believes Perry abandoned him and is no better than her parents or the Clawthornes and telling him Luz is probably dead thanks to Asi. She ends up triggering Gus' Power Incontinence and getting severely traumatized.
    • In "What is it Good For?", she ironically fell for one of these from Luz, as she taunted Emily for going along with the prejudice towards illusionists that Glandus had instead of changing their minds, which aided in her defeat.
  • Color Character: The new Golden Guard in Chapter 90. In Chapter 119: "The Alchemist's Mutant Mayhem", she becomes the Silver Sentry.
  • Color Motif: Her gold uniform symbolizes her standing as Glandus' Queen, her being the best and strongest student. It ends up foreshadowing her replacing Hunter as the Golden Guard.
  • Combat Pragmatist
  • Commonality Connection: In Chapter 121, Emily bonds with Zee Drakescale, Tabrella Diamanto, and Lindsay's older brother Hendrick over their feelings of uncertainty over their futures and Tabrella's feelings of abandonment from someone she loved.
  • Contagious Heroism: Hanging out with Lindsay for a week helps to bring out her nicer side.
  • Crush Blush: She had a few back when she first began dating Stella and starts to have these when she develops feelings for Lindsay Shystream.
  • Custom Uniform: Emily's school uniform is unique because it has gold sleeves and leggings and instead of standard boots, hers are black.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was abandoned by her parents because they couldn't afford to cure her boiling pox. She was soon adopted by the Boss and inducted into the Tarot Guild, where Lupe trained her to murder wild witches so she could kill Eda for unintentionally causing her to suffer.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • She actually serves as one of the main characters in Chapter 92: "The Gold Hexperience", as she is shown on duty as the Golden Guard, having to deal with EC recruitment and fighting the Grim Goblin.
    • Chapter 98: "Rings of Fire" goes and makes her the star as her past, how she evolved into the power-hungry revenge seeker, is revealed.
    • Chapter 121: "Coming Off a Little Shystream", her first bit of Character Focus after joining the main cast, shows Emily adjusting to life with the Shystream family as she eases into a more stable lifestyle where she begins to see her flaws and work to improve them while making friends before asking Lindsay out on a date.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Despite being the Arc Villainess of the "Glandus War" arc, she's actually the last opponent faced before Meteora.
  • Domestic Abuser: To Stella in both cases of this; she keeps Stella in a toxic relationship, never letting her out of her sight, which leaves her dependent on Emily, and Stella accepts being beaten by Emily with barely any complaints.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She and Stella appear in "The Book of King" before they're introduced and their roles are explained nine chapters later.
  • Enemy to All Living Things: Emily has repeatedly proven herself to be willing to harm palismen if it means she'll get her way. In chronological order, she threatened Principal Acne's squirrel palisman so he'd publicly remove Glandus' illusion track, accidentally destroyed Riley's beagle palisman Buster and refused to feel guilty for it, and even threatened her own palisman just to keep Maya from attacking her. Is it really all that surprising that Baum would eventually abandon her?
  • Entitled to Have You: She refuses to let anyone take Stella away from her. After the school war, she becomes determined to find Stella and get her back, only holding off on it when Sonya mentions how it's not a smart move at the moment.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: "Glandus War: The Invasion" reveals that Emily has a foster sister named Sonya that she has a good relationship with.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Emily does not force Gavin to fight in the school war against Hexside while he is still mourning the death of his father.
  • Expy:
    • Confirmed to be one to the Wicked Witch of the West, more accurately Elphaba Throppe: she has green skin, likes wearing black clothing, is capable of flying a broomstick, and even describes herself as "wicked".
    • Also one to Cassandra from Tangled: The Series: both characters are black-haired women who had been abandoned as young girls and grew up longing for recognition (though Emily's parents were murdered and it was covered up so that she believed they abandoned her.) Both women also utilize swords as their initial signature weapon, and have ended up been thrown into a Heel–Face Revolving Door.
  • Fair-Play Villain: Emily had just enough decency to give Luz a chance to forfeit in their duel after she transforms out of her cambion form, but charges in when she refuses.
  • Familiar:
    • She had a flying monkey palisman named Baum, who abandoned her in "What is it Good For?" after she threatened to destroy him so Maya wouldn't attack her in "Masks Off".
    • In Chapter 123: "Caught Up", Emily bonds with Sonya's lion palisman Pretty due to her desire to avenge her adopted sister.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her need for revenge. Emily would not be satisfied until her plans succeed and should things go wrong, she becomes angry and lashes out at anyone who opposes her. This causes her to stab Nina with the Sword of Adam when she suggests retreating when Hexside starts making a comeback in the school war. Emily does come to see that this makes her narrow-minded to those who haven't wronged her to suffer by indirection, such as when she discovered that the siege could've led to Kay's death.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Instead of being left to rot in the Conformatorium, she becomes Adrian Gray's apprentice, which Word of God confirms to be this. Then in "Brawl Night, Part 2", Melinoe has her dragged into the Underworld and sent to her own personal hell to experience her worst nightmares for all of eternity.
  • Foil: To Luz and Boscha in different ways.
  • Freudian Excuse: The reason for Emily's grudge against the Clawthornes and wild witches in general is because she was one of the victims Eda gave the boiling zit curse to nine years ago. While she was suffering from the curse, her parents abandoned her.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: But while Emily has a good reason to be angry for the above events, it doesn't change the fact that her decision to start a school war isn't right.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Getting cursed and abandoned put her on the path to becoming a serious threat skilled in Chinese Martial Arts and powerful enough to take out thirty of her fellow Juniors at once.
  • Glamour: While hanging out with Lindsay in "Rings of Power", Emily uses an illusion disguise while out in public, consisting of blue skin, yellow eyes, and white hair. She starts using it again when in public with the Shystreams in Chapter 121.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: The fact that she wears gold represents how powerful she is through both her magic and her command over the student body. As the new Golden Guard, it pronounces her (fake/temporary) status as the head of the Emperor's Coven.
  • Good Feels Good: Downplayed. Emily enjoys the attention, the approval, and the praise that comes with being the Golden Guard, who is seen by St. Epiderm as a hero.
  • Green and Mean: Emily's a green-skinned witch and didn't take long to become one of Book 2's most dangerous villains after she was properly introduced.
  • Handicapped Badass: Emily is only skilled in illusion magic: she used Glinda's construction magic to give them form and learned martial arts to become a hand-to-hand fighter. She later learns how to use Hunter's Golden Guard staff and the ice glyph.
  • Has a Type: Emily tends to become attracted to girls with the following traits: kindness, blue hair, and having a powerful alternate form. She was attracted to Glinda for the first two, Lindsay for the former and the latter, and Zee for showing all three. As a matter of fact, the latter two girls also happen to be Beast Keepers.
  • Hypocrite: She mocks Gus for being an illusionist and doesn't take him seriously despite secretly being an illusionist herself.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: After asking out Lindsay, both girls strove to make their first date one the other deserved. At the end of it, Emily (having made the decision to not pursue her feelings for Lindsay any further) puts the cyclop's happiness before her own and pushes her to win over Cross.
  • An Ice Person: Because of Luz messing with her, Emily learns how to use ice magic via the ice glyph.
  • Innocent Bystander: She was only observing the mob beat Luz at the slayground when Eda cursed all of them and her with them. She even thought about doing something before Eda stepped in.
  • Irrational Hatred: In Chapter 98: "Rings of Power", Lindsay admits that while Emily has a justified reason for hating Eda, her hatred towards Luz falls into this as Luz didn't even know who Emily was until the Gland Prix. What's more, Emily didn't start hating Luz until a few years after the slayground incident. Emily refused to concede because she wanted to justify her actions.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: She starts paying for her crimes in Chapter 64: Turning Point" when she takes a Mind Rape from Gus and relives her more traumatic memories after her parents disappeared. Two chapters later, she loses her third duel against Luz and is arrested for her collaborations with the Tarot Guild, having a Villainous Breakdown. Chapter 67: "After the War" reveals that all her awards have been revoked due the implications that she used her illusions and Glinda's magic to cheat, she's barred from joining the Emperor's Coven, and locked away in the Conformatorium. Soon after, Graye makes her his apprentice which serves as a Fate Worse than Death.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: She's a witch with years of self-taught Martial Arts training under her belt.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: While interviewing Donna as the Golden Guard in "The Gold Hexperience", Emily planted doubt about Nina in Donna's head by revealing what the werecat did on her orders at Glandus, putting their friendship and romantic feelings in peril. In "Coming Off a Little Shystream", Gavin ruins Emily's chances with Lindsay by bringing up all the horrible things Emily had done that Nina told LOWTH about. While Lindsay chases Gavin off and tells Emily it hasn't stopped her from helping her, it leads to Emily accepting that a relationship between them would be doomed to fail.
  • Light Is Not Good: Just because she has gold sleeves on her uniform doesn't mean she's any kind of good.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: It turns out she gets her magical prowess from her true father, Adrian Graye Vernworth.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Chapter 105: "Way Down to Mel's Town" shows that Emily had a tail as a child which is a hint to Adrian Graye being her father. Chapter 121 reveals she ate it to avoid starving to death.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: There's a lot of things she doesn't know about, like how the Tarot Guild is still active following the arrest of several of their members in "Understanding Hunter", how she doesn't know Terra's the Producer, and how she's the daughter of the Illusion Coven Head.
  • Love Triangle: She ends up in one between Cross and Lindsay since she starts to develop feelings for the latter. The triangle is brought to a close in Chapter 121 when Emily comes to the conclusion that she and Lindsay won't work out.
  • Master of Illusion: "The Glandus War: Turning Point" reveals she's actually a secret illusionist, having hidden her true magical power for years so she wouldn't be looked down upon in Glandus, who don't respect illusionists. She's so powerful, she can create illusions that cover her whole school.
  • Mind Rape: Emily's illusions entrance people and mess with their senses, thus changing their perceptions. This was how she was able to eliminate every top student at Glandus before her and her allies along with manipulating Bela into cursing Cana.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Emily discovers in Chapter 121 that Kay was in the Owl House during Craig's siege, she deduces that had Craig succeeded in eliminating everyone there, Kay either would've been abandoned again or killed alongside Luz's family. Holding Kay causes Emily to shed Tears of Remorse for putting an at-the-time unhatched infant in harm's way.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: Between the three Golden Guards, she's the obvious Mean to Cross's Nice and Hunter's In-Between on account of her criminal history and vendetta against the Clawthornes.
  • Nightmare Weaver: She created illusions of Bangles, Zepher and Brian in order to mess with Amity after getting her alone by seperating her from Luz. In a case of Laser-Guided Karma, Gus subjects her to reliving her having to eat rats after being abandoned by her parents when she was a kid.
  • Orphan's Ordeal
  • Parental Abandonment: Emily claims that her parents, who were wild witches, abandoned her shortly after the Boiling Zit incident, leaving her to suffer. It seems that this is legitimately true until it's subverted in Chapter 126: "Heartless Whisper", where it turns out they were murdered for stealing medicine to cure her boiling pox.
  • Psycho Ex-Girlfriend: While she doesn't take it well when Glinda breaks up with her, it's ultimately defied since she soon moves on and becomes attracted to Lindsay.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes and yeah, the second part really applies with her.
  • Secret Identity: Chapter 90 reveals that she's the new Golden Guard following Hunter's disappearance and being taken in by Lilith. Chapter 92 shows she's one of them; she's alternating the role with Cross Drakescale on Graye's orders.
  • Shipper on Deck: Once Emily sees that she can't date Lindsay due to her lingering issues and fear of hurting her should they go long-term, Emily tells her to hook up with Cross, wanting them to be happy after everything they've done for her.
  • Shipping Torpedo: She sinks Donna and Nina's chances out of pure spite, telling Donna about Nina's full criminal history in order to turn her against the werecat. Ironically, she ends up on the receiving end of this when Gavin intrudes on her date with Lindsay and makes her see that she isn't ready for a romantic relationship due to how things between her and Glinda ended.
  • Ship Tease:
    • At first, Emily begins to develop feelings for Lindsay due to her kindness and compassion towards the illusionist, wanting to help her heal from her past trauma. While they do go on a date in Chapter 121, the ship ends up sinking when Emily comes to fear hurting Lindsay if they date while Emily's still recovering.
    • Chapter 121 ends up planting seeds of Emily possibly falling for Zee since she shows support and understanding toward Emily's situation. Two chapters later, they spend more time together and open up more about who they see as family, both casually labeling their day out as a "first date".
  • Shout-Out:
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She's only dated Stella in all the time she's been seen and after the war, she refuses to give up on getting her back no matter what. Subverted when she gets Ship Tease moments with Lindsay.
  • Technicolor Fire: Emily can cast light-blue flames which are how she can create illusions that mess with peoples' heads. When she gets her new powers in "Caught Up", she finds that she can now conjure up red fire at will.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: This becomes her character arc in the "Tarot Guild" arc, as she starts to open up more and interact with people in healthy environments.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Flashbacks show that Emily was not always the Alpha Bitch she is when we first meet her.
  • Viler New Villain: After Boscha gets dropped from the Big Bad Ensemble and undergoes a Heel–Face Turn in Book Two, Emily steps up to replace her as Luz's Arch-Enemy and proves to be far worse than Boscha ever was, on top of being more dangerous.
  • Villainous Breakdown
  • Villain Protagonist: She's one of the main protagonists in "The Gold Hexperience", as she performs a mission as the new Golden Guard. She is also one of the main characters in "Rings of Fire".
  • Villain Reveals the Secret: She has done this quite a lot.
    • In "The Ballad of Eda, Part 2", she announces to the Isles during her victory interview that she was one of Eda's victims in the Boiling Zit incident because Eda was protecting Luz from the mob.
    • In "The Gold Hexperience", she tells Donna during her recruitment interview everything Nina did while working under her at Glandus. This shakes up Donna's trust in Nina, but it also helps confirm to LOWTH that she's now the Golden Guard.
    • A non-villanious example happens in "Coming Off a Little Shystream", where Emily tells Lindsay that Cross is crushing on her to give her a confidence boost and convince Lindsay that she still has a chance to date him.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: As the Golden Guard, she's this. She regains it after becoming the Silver Sentry and being pardoned by Belos but by that point, she doesn't act like a villain anymore.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her gold sleeves gives away that she's one of the girls who vandalized the Owl House in "The Book of King".
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Her motivation for winning the school war is to earn the Boss's praise and impress the Emperor's Coven so she can join it. She fails to accomplish either goal when she loses.
  • Yellow/Purple Contrast: Actually Gold/Purple Contrast, as Luz's signature color is purple while Emily wear gold on her Glandus and Golden Guard uniforms.
  • You Are Worth Hell: A ziz-zagged example between platonic and romantic. Cross and Lindsay risk their lives going to the Underworld to bring Emily back to the Boiling Isles. Cross (who was trying to look out for Emily due to their tenures as the Golden Guard) falls into the platonic side while Lindsay (who was confused about her feelings for Emily) falls into the romantic side.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: As part of her "Reason You Suck" Speech towards Emily in "What is it Good For?", Luz points out how Emily could have proven Glandus wrong about illusion magic being useless with her talents and inspired other kids to try their hands in it. Instead, she reinforced the school's prejudice on it and built a record of lies with Stella aiding her by giving her illusions form.

    Nina Fangs

Nina Fangs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lc_nina_fangs_9.png

A werecat witch who was formerly a student at Glandus High, she was one of the school's top three Juniors and the best of their Beast Keepers, until the school war when she was forced to attend Hexside, as part of her parole.

  • The Ace: She was the top student of the Glandus Beast Keeping track.
  • Affectionate Nickname: "Kitten" by Tito, "Nini" by both of her twin siblings, and Donna when they were younger.
  • Alternate Self: She has one in the "What If... Lilith raised Luz?" timeline. That version of her is the Queen of Glandus High instead of Emily.
  • The Beastmaster: As previously mentioned she's a Beast Keeper, but rather than summoning beasts, she prefers transforming herself into them, to the point that she allows Sonya to modify her body to allow for more natural transformations.
  • Best Friend: Donna used to be hers when they were young girls. In the present, Skara is the most likely candidate for this position to Nina.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest
  • Cat Girl: She's a werecat witch, a witch with lycanthropic traits making her part cat.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: As a Beast Keeper, both of her uniforms have the color orange.
  • Color Motifs: Orange; her hair, a few portions of her fur, and her school uniforms bear it.
  • Cool Big Sis: After a month living with the Brookes, Nina comes to serve as a surrogate older sister to Skara and Scabrina, with Boscha actually calling her this when she forgives Nina for her actions in Chapter 135: "Kneecapped".
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Chapter 93, titled, "Nina on the Couch", puts focus on Nina for a change: how she became an atheist, losing control of her instincts, how she got enrolled in Glandus High, and how she's been adjusting to Hexside.
    • "Chapter 114: House Brooken" shows how things have been for her since her last appointment with Ms. Traveler, divulging how she's beginning to see the Brookes as her family.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: Word of God confirms she has dreadlocks and she's both a Cat Girl and Beast Keeper with multiple transformations.
  • Everybody Has Standards: According to Emily, Nina never attacked any of Glandus's healers due to her preference towards them.
  • Evil Redhead: As a student of Glandus, she fit this perfectly. She begins to grow out of it in the "Return to the Boiling Isles" arc.
  • Expy: She's meant to be one to Catra. Both are Cat Girls who work for a villain and have complex feelings for a girl they've been crushing on since childhood. Her nickname "Kitten" is also what Double Trouble calls Catra.
  • Familiar: Ms. Traveler gifts her with a shishi palisman in "Nina on the Couch", which she dubs Tugs.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's a redhead (actually her hair's orange) who can get really intense.
  • Foil: She eventually turns into one for Skara.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: She has a right to be angry with how the werecat population is being oppressed by Belos' rule, but it doesn't excuse all the cruel things she willingly did under Emily's orders, a fact that she realizes and accepts.
  • Goal in Life: She had hoped to become the first lycan head witch who could make life better for werecats. Once she takes her second chance more seriously, she changes her goal to becoming a better person striving to gain her independence.
  • Has a Type: Nina admits she tends to be attracted to Healers, which is shown between her attraction to Donna and Lambi. Emily even says in "Coming Off a Little Shystream" that Nina never harmed a single healer at Glandus High.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: At first, Nina goes along with her parole for the sake of getting her freedom and pretends to make nice with Luz while keeping in touch with Sonya. It ends up being subverted when she starts to change for real and become a better person, turning into a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Hidden Depths: Would anybody believe the savage-acting werecat is a skilled drummer unless they see it for themselves?
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: In "Glandus War: Masks Off", Emily stabs her in the stomach for suggesting they surrender the war. This injury would end up having serious consequenses for Nina.
  • Jerk Justifications
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: For how much Nina acts like a huge pain who acts aggressive towards everyone around her, she does have a soft spot for West and Winter, her younger siblings.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She impales Boscha in "Turning Point" (a move she earnestly regrets) and is impaled herself by Emily near the end of the following chapter.
  • Love Triangle: She likes Donna and Donna seems to like her, but hearing about Nina's bullying and illegal activity during her time in Glandus leads to Donna rejecting the werecat. Following this, Nina attempts to move on and becomes interested in Lambi, but when Donna asks Cross out, Nina seems to be saddened by the news.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: She has several siblings as shown in "Prelude to War: Part 2", with her mother currently pregnant with more babies. All of them are named Ralph, Buttons, the twins West and Winter, Itchy, Max, and her elder sister Cally.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: She's the In-Between to Cain's Nice and Tito's Mean, as while she threatens or mauls anybody she's ordered to, she's got a soft spot for both her younger twin siblings and her crush Donna.
  • Not-So-Final Confession: In "What is it Good For?", Nina sent Donna a text admitting her feelings for her as Glandus High collapsed from Meteora's dragon transformation. Before Nina was going to die, Donna flies her out on her staff.
  • Odd Friendship:
    • With Tito, who treated her like any other witch and always gossiped with her about Donna.
    • Also with Skara, but not as immediate. She's initially dismissive towards Skara when she starts staying with the Brookes, but came around to the werewolf due to her kindness and support.
  • Red Is Violent: She has red fur and has proven herself to be very aggressive in a fight to the point of losing control to her instincts.
  • Rip Tailoring: Her uniform has several rips in it, which clues you in on her savage nature. She even maintains this with her Hexside uniform.
  • Running Gag: Two.
    • The more common one is that Felicia Fox and Andrea Pinkjoy tend to Jump Scare her, causing her Shock Collar to electrocute her even though the werecat doesn't get angry.
    • The less common one is that a member of the Brookes family walks in on Nina whenever she's doing something embarrassing in her room.
  • Secret-Keeper: Chapter 74 reveals her to be one of the few people that were in on Emily being an illusionist.
  • Shock Collar: Per the terms of her parole, she must wear one that electrocutes her if she gets very angry. It later starts shocking her when she gets spooked by Felicia or Andrea.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: After being transfered, Nina has to wear Hexside's Beast Keeping uniform. She modifies it to have torn sleeves and her claws can stick out of her boots.
  • Tsundere
  • Twice Shy: After confessing to Donna, Nina becomes afraid of how she'll respond. After they reconcile following the adventure through Wonderland, they start talking again but are still awkward around each other.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension
  • Villainous Friendship: Seems to be friends with Tito, who she hangs out with outside of school and who knows about her crush on Donna Masterskull. She also has no problem with his Affectionate Nickname for her.
  • We Used to Be Friends: She used to be friends with Emily, but that is no longer the case after Emily stabbed her and left her for dead.
  • Womb Horror: During a checkup in Chapter 93, Hail Whisphers tells Nina that due to her stab wound from Emily, her womb was damaged which made her infertile. This means Nina can never have kids of her own by natural birth.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Because of her parole, Nina is forbidden from returning home to her family and must stay with the Brookes under Calypso's watch. She later comes to find her parents don't want her to come home.

    Donna Masterskull

Donna Masterskull/Karona

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1000003770_1.png

A top student at St. Epiderm who is part of the Healing Track. She is also the crush of Nina Fangs and the leader of LOWTH, a superhero team known as "The League of Witches That Helps".

  • The Ace: She's the top student of St. Epiderm's Healing track.
  • Atrocious Alias: According to Felicia, fans of Donna's team who don't know her name call her "Burlesque Savior", much to her indignation.
  • Best Friend: She and Nina were these as kids; in the present, Beocrow is this for her.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Donna is a nice person but not towards anyone who pisses her off enough. When Larry Coppers insults Amity to Luz's face and declares he'll hunt her down in Chapter 111, Donna decks the prick so hard, she knocks them out.
  • Bisexual Love Triangle: Donna's bi and seems to have feelings for Nina, which she represses. To get her mind off of Nina dating Lambi, she decides to ask out one of her male classmates, that being Cross Drakescale.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Being a healer and a part-time superhero, Donna certainly acts as such.
  • Chest Insignia: As Wonder Witch, her symbol is a white star within a heart.
  • Childhood Friends:
    • She was friends with Nina when they were kids, but they fell out of touch because they went to different schools.
    • "Prelude to War, Part 3" reveals that she also knew Amber and Derwin since they all grew up at Scooter Crane's Orphanage.
  • Code Name: While on duty with LOWTH, she uses the name "Wonder Witch".
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Healer blue on her uniform.
  • Crush Blush: She has one when Tina asks if Nina is important to her.
  • Combat Medic: She's a healer and can kick ass thanks to her family butler Auggie giving her combat training since she was young.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents were killed by a werewolf (who turned out to be Lupe) and her uncle Draco, she was separated from her twin brother and she spent most of her childhood at Scooter Crane's orphanage. As a teenager, she befriended Serpentina and Eustace Curry and went to wild teen parties with them but drug abuse and consumption of alcohol led to her having a seizure, so she cut ties with them.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "Chapter 94: A Very Special Donna" goes out of its way to show her past and how she dedicated herself to helping people.
    • "Chapter 115: Thank Titan It's Frieday" goes about showing Donna prepping for her date with Cross and planning out how she'll win back Nina's interest.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Emily (while working as the Golden Guard) informs Donna of Nina's criminal past in "The Gold Hexperience" during an interview at St. Epiderm's EC recruitment drive. Donna ends up rejecting Nina based on this only to admit 10 chapters later in "Witches in Wonderland" that she shouldn't have taken Emily's word for it and she should have asked for Nina's side of the story.
    • In "Thank Titan It's Frieday", Felicia helps her hijack Nina and Lambi's date so she can get Nina interested in her again. This bombs because A) she brings up Nina injuring her older sister Cally, which angers her enough to storm out of the restaurant, B) Skara calls her out for intruding on Nina's date and attempting to steal her from Lambi, and C) she took advantage of Cross in the process and ruined the night for him. She becomes incredibly guilt-ridden over her actions, moreso when Veronica tells her Felicia has no dating experience that warrants giving people advice.
  • Expy: She is one to Adora: both are altruistic teenage girls who help people, wield swords, and has an aggressive Cat Girl who acts as a villain for a villainous faction for a Love Interest.
  • Familiar: Her palisman is an alicorn named Whirlwind, whom she carved from palistrom wood.
  • Foil: To both Bangles and Asi. All three of them are healers, but that's all they have in common. Donna does her best to help people in any way possible while the two Glandus students had no issues with harming kids younger than them, Bangles trying to cut Amity and Asi succeeding in cutting Luz.
  • Given Name Reveal: Her real name, Karona, was revealed to her by her hybrid uncle Draco in Chapter 117: "Starcrossed".
  • Goal in Life: After what's happened to her in the past, Donna's made it her dream to pay that good will forward by helping people by means of her healing skills or as a superhero.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She starts to feel jealous of Lambi after Nina shows interest in her, hinting at her feelings for Nina and regret toward rejecting her feelings. It gets to the point that she asks Cross out in "So IFWOT?", likely her following Felicia's suggestion to use him to make Nina jealous.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: It's her Dark Secret and biggest regret from her past friendship with Serpentina and Eustace. The first party she went with them to, she started drinking apple blood and it led to her stroke, with Kyle's father saying it nearly did severe damage to her liver and lungs.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Her dress in Chapter 115 gets both Cross and Nina's attention which was just what she was aiming for with the latter.
  • Healing Hands: Her blue sleeves and leggings signifies she's in the Healing Track.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: She's a firm believer in this, saying it's just as important as loyalty, strength and smarts. It's the reason she wants Kyle to join her superhero group despite her friends disagreeing with his recruitment.
  • Heart Symbol: She has one as part of her Chest Insignia.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: She has two mothers and being bi, shows interest in a girl.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • She's on her school's gymnastics team and is a cheerleader, as stated in "Hexing Out for a Hero".
    • In "A Very Special Donna", she admits to her therapist, Dr. Midnight, that she sometimes feels out of place in the Demon Realm and wonders if she's meant to be someplace else.
    • In "So IFWOT?", she tells Luz, Zee, and Felicia that she's never tried dating anybody because she always fears getting hurt or hurting the other person.
  • Iconic Item: She always carries around a key she found as a kid, which is revealed to be a keyblade in "After the War".
  • Leg Focus: Played for Laughs. People tend to comment on how Wonder Witch's costume is inappropriate because she wears a leotard which would show off her legs. However, Donna wears pink tights that cover them.
  • Love Triangle: She and Nina have somewhat mutual feelings for each other, but Donna rejects Nina after Emily informs her of her criminal past, which leads to Nina trying to move on from Donna and date Lambi instead. In response, Donna chooses to go out with Cross, which interferes with the Cross/Lindsay/Emily love triangle, turning both into a Love Dodecahedron.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She doesn't realize how insensitive she's been towards Nina until Skara calls her out for intruding on Nina & Lambi's date and behaving like a floozy to catch Nina's eye when she rejected her and didn't help the werecat with her problems. She soon feels even more guilty for taking advantage of Cross just to win Nina back.
  • Official Couple: After talking things out in Chapter 130, Donna officially becomes part of an open relationship with Cross, allowing him to alternate between dating her and Lindsay.
  • Rebel Leader: She puts together and leads the League of Witches That Helps (LOWTH) with her friends to combat the muggings turned kidnappings since the Emperor's Coven has failed to do so.
  • Running Gag: People tend to call her supersuit risqué due to how it shows off her legs, much to her repeated annoyance.
  • Save the Villain: In "What is it Good For?", she receives a text from Nina and races to the collapsing Glandus building in order rescue the injured werecat before it comes down.
  • Shout-Out: Her superhero identity is called "Wonder Witch", which is a reference to Wonder Woman.
  • Silver Has Mystic Powers: She has silver hair, and she's been entrusted with Queen Mab's keyblade for some reason.
  • Something Person: Her superhero name is "Wonder Witch".
  • Spanner in the Works: By asking Cross out, Donna keeps him from hooking up with Lindsay: he ends up lampshading it after he learns Donna was using him to make Nina jealous.
  • Twice Shy: After Nina reveals how she really felt about her, Donna actively begins avoiding talking to her about this, which would imply that she isn't sure how she feels about Nina.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension
  • Wake Up, Go to School & Save the World: She and her team juggle their heroics with their academics, and this leads to them missing classes from time to time.

    Cross Drakescale

Cross Drakescale

A witch who is part of the Plant track at St. Epiderm and whose skills have led to Emperor Belos himself taking an interest in the boy.

  • Ability Mixing: In his dragon form, Cross' fire-breathing ability can be combined with his ice magic to produce fire so cold, it freezes his opponents.
  • The Ace: Along with Veronica and Beel, Cross is one of the three Top Students in the Plant track; in his case, it's due to his strategic mind. His practicing wild magic enables him to use different kinds of elemental magic, and so far he has yet to be defeated in combat because of his adaptability.
  • Alliterative Name: If he were to ever have to go by his mother's birth name, that is. If he did, he'd be known as Cross Clawthorne.
  • Always Someone Better: Zig-zagged with both Willow and Veronica. All three of them specialize in plant magic, but Willow and Veronica exceed Cross in magical power. However, that's the only sort of magic they know (until Veronica starts branching out), while Cross is capable of using different kinds of elemental magic.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Cross seems to have a habit of not being around each time the new Golden Guard is. At first, it seems as if he actually is the Golden Guard but it turns out he's not, yet what he's really up to is unclear. It's later revealed in Chapter 92 that he and Emily Tricks are working in tandem as the Guard for Graye, but why he was chosen isn't stated.
  • Ascended Extra: When Cross was introduced, he was little more than a background character. Slowly he gained more prominence through his role in Emily's character arc, his romantic tension with Lindsay, and his getting roped into Donna and Nina's own romance. All of this plus his unwilling team-ups with Luz's family ultimately earns him a spot among the main cast, making him the first male character to do so since Hunter was added and Jerbo & Barcus were removednote .
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's constantly stated to be a Nice Guy. Nevertheless, if anyone he cares about is threatened, he won't hesitate to go after whoever makes the threat to keep them safe.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: If eating coal is anything to go by, it would seem so. "Chapter 116: Brooken Home" reveals he's been doing it since he was a kid.
  • Blow You Away: Chapter 106 shows that he can use wind magic while fighting off the fake Glandus students within Emily's personal Hell.
  • Blue Is Heroic: His dragon form has a blue underbelly, claws, tail spikes and wing stripes, and he won't turn his back on someone who needs help.
  • Breath Weapon: He can breathe fire, which he uses while fighting the Grim Goblin. In his dragon form, the flames become as cold as ice.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His uniform has Plant track green on it.
  • Combat Tentacles: Like Willow, he often conjures vines to ensnare his opponents.
  • Commonality Connection: He finds people who understand his issues regarding being the Last of Their Kind: the escaped basilisks. It's Vee in particular that helps him believe people will accept his dragon side if he gives them the chance.
  • Connected All Along: "Chapter 108: The Errands in the Willows" reveals that through his mother, he's a Clawthorne; because of this, he's Luz, King, Beo, and Felix's cousin.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Chapter 92 gives him some focus for the first time as he's revealed to work part-time in filling in for Hunter as the Golden Guard on Graye's orders.
    • Chapter 115 revolves around him going on his first date with Donna, and he receives his palisman in the process.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Donna uses him to make Nina jealous, ruining the first date experience for both of them. Donna sees her mistake and offers to make it up to him, which he accepts.
  • Emerald Power: If his wearing green wasn't enough, he can produce green flames when entering his dragon form.
  • Everyone Can See It: Zee and Emily can see he's got a thing for Lindsay.
  • Everyone Has Standards
  • Expy: Played With. While Cross has no official basis, JP sees him as the Peter Parker of the LCU, being a teenage boy who works as a masked hero and has to maintain his Secret Identity, being The Ace, and having an asocial personality.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Cross is first introduced while he's eating coal.
  • Familiar: In "Chapter 115: Thank Titan It's Frieday", Damien passes down his phoenix palisman, Elio, to Cross as a reward for all the good he'd done recently.
  • Foil:
    • To Beocrow. Both guys are members of the extended Clawthorne family but while Beocrow told Luz of their relation the moment he met her, Cross keeps his hidden until he deems it safe for him to tell her. Plus, Beocrow has a solid friend group while being acquainted with other witches; Cross, being as reserved as he is, initially only had Beo (and even then, they only occasionally hung out) and Teri, but starts to grow out of his shell.
    • To Gus G. They were both introduced in the "Human Realm" arc, yet while Cross wasn't of much importance when he was introduced, Gus G. was a major supporting player in helping Willow return home. Afterward, the boys Swapped Roles; Gus's prominece would decrease and put him a bit more Out of Focus as Book 2 continued on while Cross would end up getting sucked into everyone's drama and receiving some of his own, joining the main cast as a result.
  • Friendless Background: "Brooken Home" reveals he didn't have any friends growing up as kids considered him weird for his Bizarre Taste in Food. His noted acquaintance with Beocrow since childhood at least keeps him out of being completely devoid of them.
  • Genre Savvy: Since Luz and Eda get the attention of the Emperor's Coven on a regular basis, he refuses to tell them his mother's a Clawthorne because his family would have the coven's attention as a result. That's why he refuses to inform them of their relation until he's gotten the EC off his family's backs.
  • Goal in Life: Cross desires to re-establish peace between witches and dragons and keep his generation from developing the hatred of dragons from past generations. Deep down, he wishes to protect his loved ones and make friends who'll accept him for who and what he is. All of this gets Elio to bond with him.
  • Green Thumb: He's a member of the Plant Track, able to summon vines and roots to restrain people along with being able to bring things such as trees to life.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: In the "Underworld Arc", he and Lindsay join the Clawthornes, Amity, Willow, Gus, Boscha, and Hunter on their rescue mission to the Underworld in order to save Emily along with King, Edric, Cups & Mugs from Mel.
  • Hidden Depths: He reveals to Lindsay in Chapter 105 that he's been studying wild magic in secret.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: His Goal in Life is to be friends with people who will have his back as he'll have theirs.
  • An Ice Person: Chapter 106 shows he's also able to use this magic. While in his dragon form, his fire breath becomes so cold, it can freeze his targets.
  • Irony: The guy practically breathes it;
    • A guy studying in the Plant track is proficient in fire magic. Additionally, he's a natural with fire, but can balance it out with both water and ice magic.
    • Cross grew up in a Non-Heteronormative Society, and yet he's the only confirmed character in the main cast who is straight.
    • While some of the other Drakescales pride themselves on being attractive, he's an Insecure Love Interest who manages to hook up with two girls at once.
  • Little Bit Beastly: He has scales on a few parts of his body in his witch state.
  • Living a Double Life: He got forced into this when Adrian Graye got him to start substituting for the Golden Guard.
  • Love Triangle: He ends up in one with Lindsay (who he has mutual feelings for) and Emily (who also likes Lindsay). He later gets caught up in another when Donna asks him out to get her mind off of Nina and Lambi, effectively ending up in a Love Hexagon.
  • Making a Splash: As previously stated, he can use water magic.
  • Nice Guy: While Cross often keeps to himself, he's repeatedly stated to be one of these: he just needs to open up more often.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: Between the Golden Guards, he's definitely the Nice to Emily's Mean and Hunter's In-Between.
  • Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid: Cross is revealed to be half-witch, half-dragon in "Chapter 107: Resolutions".
  • Odd Friendship:
    • He's friends with local goth boy and Helldemon Teri Oscorne and to a lesser extent the equally goth Beocrow, his cousin.
    • "Chapter 111: So IFWOT?" has him form something of one with Danny, as they hang out together during the IFWOT.
  • Official Couple: In "Everything Changes After This", he came close to breaking up with Donna after all that they went through only to make their relationship status official when Lindsay suggests they have an open relationship so he can date both girls at once.
  • The One Guy: He's the sole male Love Interest in the previously established Love Dodecahedron, plus the initial makeshift teams composed of Lilith, Donna, Star, and Vee in "Starcrossed" and Luz, Willow, Nina, and Donna again in "The Alchemist's Mutant Mayhem".
  • Out of Focus: Started off as this when he was introduced in the "Human Realm" arc, having two appearances and only speaking in one of them. Later subverts this to the point of becoming an Ascended Extra.
  • Playing with Fire: He has fire breath and can conjure up fireballs in his fists, making him an effective combatant.
  • Red Herring: He seems to be the man behind the new Golden Guard, and Lindsay is convinced he is, but it turns out to be Emily. It ends up being subverted upon the reveal that they're both the Golden Guard.
  • Red Herring Shirt: He didn't have much prominence at first, but he later plays a major role in Emily's character arc as well as Donna and Nina's relationship.
  • The Redeemer
  • Refusal of the Call: Chapter 82 reveals that he rejected Danny's offer to join the student council to represent the Plant track, which led to Beel taking the position. In the same chapter, both he and Teri reject Donna's offer to join LOWTH.
  • Save the Villain: In Chapter 101, he and Lindsay make the call to rescue Emily from the Underworld by joining Team Hell-and-Back on their journey there to save King, Edric, and the Holder brothers.
  • Secret Identity: He's the other identity of the new Golden Guard.
  • Ship Tease: He starts to show feelings for Lindsay Shystream, thinking she's nice and pretty but doesn't make a move because he doesn't want her getting caught up in his "Golden Guard" issues. He also acts protective of her when he sees her in danger, such as when Emily was hanging around her or when the fake Cain and Nina within Emily's personal Hell came close to injuring her.
  • Shout-Out:
    • His name and casual clothing come from Ash's rival of the same name from Pokémon: I Choose You!.
    • In terms of abilities and backstory, he takes some inspiration from Duncan Rosenblatt of Firebreather due to having Dragon Ancestry on his father's side.
  • The Strategist: The reason Cross is a top student is because he's one of these.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Played with. Cross's eyes are colored amber, the undertones of which makes them look golden.
  • Technicolor Fire: When he shifts into his dragon form, Cross produces green flames. When using his fire breath in said form, they're blue due to their freezing properties.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Cross is not happy with the thought of getting roped into Luz's misadventures on a regular basis, as it counteracts his mission to keep his family out of harm's way when the girl is a walking danger magnet.
  • Vine Tentacles
  • We ARE Struggling Together: He tells Emily that they need to have each other's backs while they're working as the new Golden Guard because there's no other options for them.
Whether we like it or not, we're in this together... since neither of us have much of a choice in the matter.
  • Weredragon: "Chapter 106: Highway to Mel" claims that he's a dragon lycan, of which Belos supposedly exterminated because they were practitioners of Wild Magic. The next chapter clarifies that he's really a dragon, and were-dragons aren't real.
  • Wind Is Green: His signature color is green, and he shows himself to be a user of wind magic.
