Carlson Family

    Rachel Carlson

Rachel Carlson

Played By: Robin Weigert

"My whole life all I ever wanted was to have a baby. And now because of you I can."

Juliet's sister.

  • Baldness Means Sickness: She's bald because she's recovering from cancer. She later grows back all of her hair.
  • Guinea Pig Family: Juliet's experimenting on her (with Rachel's consent) to try and get results.
  • The Topic of Cancer: She's struggled with cancer for a good long time.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Rachel is never seen again in the outside world apart from the video Ben shows Juliet, despite presumably having quite an interesting story to tell. Her sister disappeared without a trace working for a company that doesn't exist.

    Mr & Mrs Carlson

Mr & Mrs Carlson

Played By: Michael Trisler & Amy Stewart

Juliet and Rachel's parents.

  • Amicably Divorced: They were heading toward one, considering how well they got along when breaking the news to Juliet and Rachel.

Others

    Edmund Burke

Edmund Burke

Played By: Željko Ivanek

"Look, Jules, there's two ways this plays out. One is your research is potentially genius. And the other — it raises some very serious ethical questions. Maybe even criminal concerns. But if you collaborate with me, based on my reputation, all this is viewed as cutting edge science. And we will win prizes and drink champagne. And do a lot of good for people."

Juliet's ex-husband, and was also her boss when she worked at the Miami Central University Medical Research Laboratory‎.

  • Asshole Victim: He was such an unrepentant asshole that it's more funny than anything when he gets his due.
  • Bald of Evil: As per usual for Željko Ivanek; Burke is bald and as amoral as they come.
  • Blackmail: Ed threatens Juliet in a subtle way, raising the issue of her research's possible 'criminal concerns'.
  • The Bully: He treats Juliet like a doormat, lording his new young girlfriend over her.
  • Character Death: In one of the more memorable and sudden deaths in the series, Burke walks out into the street and struck by a bus.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He's very successful but certainly not above blackmail.
  • Dirty Old Man: He's enjoying an affair with an assistant young enough to be his daughter, and there's also an age gap between Juliet and himself.
  • Jerkass: Ed is a smug jerk who likes lording his power over Juliet.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: By a bus.
Juliet: No! I'm not interested in publishing, Ed. It's my sister.
Edmund: Fine, then, if you're not interested why are you concerned—BUS
  • Laughably Evil: Ed is an unrepentant bastard with no redeeming qualities, but he's pretty funny in his short appearance due to his Mommy Issues, blatant self-involvement and his spectacular exit.
  • Look Both Ways: His failure to do so results in being splattered by a bus.
  • Meaningful Name: The historical Edmund Burke is regarded as one of the fathers of modern conservatism, although he has been influential on other political ideologies as well.
  • Mommy Issues: Ed does not have a good relationship with his mother, as evidenced by his phone call to her.
  • Only in It for the Money: The entire reason he's in his field is to make cash and get respect. In his little speech to Juliet, he only mentions 'doing good for people' in an off-handed way at the end to try and convince Juliet to work with him.
  • Posthumous Character: Dead prior to the current timeline of the series.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Right as he's talking to Juliet, he's abruptly hit by a bus.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: When he was married to Juliet. The man must have a silver tongue to get her to agree to marry him in the first place.
  • Working with the Ex: With Juliet, at the same lab.
