  • Beware the Nice Ones: When his mother-in-law makes one too many anti-Semitic cracks, Stuart knocks over an entire cabinet full of dishes.
  • Nice Jewish Boy: Generally polite and genial to most.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Becomes far more short-tempered and unpleasant after his heart attack, to the point of treating a friendly paintball game between the partners like a vicious dogfight. He eventually gets over it.

  • Baldness Angst: Douglas overhears a store clerk refer to him as "the old bald guy." Stung, he buys a toupee, but the other partners collapse in laughter the first time they see him wearing it.
  • Butt-Monkey: If something embarrassing has to happen to one of the characters, bet on it being Douglas. He gets a boil on his ass, his marriage falls apart when he gets caught cheating, he once got arrested for prostitution while trying to order sushi, he once fell for the old exploding cigar trick, etc. etc.

  • Ambiguously Bi: She loves men but doesn't seem much unfazed when she is kissed by C.J. Twice.
  • Bait-and-Switch Lesbians: She and C.J.were close but when they kissed, nothing more came out of it.
  • Better as Friends: After the kiss, Abby turns C.J down, declares her attraction to men and decides they're better off staying friends.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: C.J. plants a kiss on her, leading to a very awkward exchange between Abby and C.J.
  • Hide Your Lesbians: When Abby was kissed by her friend C.J., there were some half-hearted attempts to establish a relationship between the two but both actresses were gone by the end of the following season.
  • Incompatible Orientation: She attracts the attention of C.J., a bisexual lawyer, and Abby turns her down because she is straight.

  • Better as Friends: After kissing Abby, she is turned down by Abby, reveals she herself is also attracted to men and she and Abby decide to stay better off as friends.
