Demon Kingdom

Demon King

    Shibuya Yuuri
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/calendar2006_04.png
Voiced by Takahiro Sakurai (JPN, teen), Mika Kanai (JPN, child) and Yuri Lowenthal (ENG, teen), Sandy Fox (ENG, child)

A high school student who lived normally in Japan until a couple of bullies decided to flush his head in a toilet. Suddenly, he was transported to a different world where he was the Maoh. Although he took a while to get used to his new settings, he learns to rule this his kingdom, with the help of his friends.

Yuuri believes that everyone should be trusted, even if they've betrayed him already and that no life is beyond redemption.

  • Accidental Proposal: Early in the series, Yuuri slaps Wolfram across the left cheek for insulting his mother. What Yuuri doesn't know is that slapping someone across the left cheek is how at least the noble classes propose marriage in Demon Kingdom. When he finds out, Yuuri is horrified, but Wolfram takes the engagement very seriously.
  • Adoptive Peer Parent: Yuuri is fifteen when he adopts ten-year-old Greta.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Sometimes the members of his family will call him "Yu-chan".
  • All-Loving Hero: Yuuri has declared that he believes love and trust to be something you give to everyone and not just to a single person.
  • Always Save The Boy: Subverted and played straight. Yuri feels like Wolfram can take care of himself and he is the one that usually needs rescuing anyway. But the few times where Wolfram is in trouble, he won't hesitate to protect him. Special mention to when Wolf was kidnapped and he chased after the Originators on his own.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Yuuri repeatedly insists he's only into girls, although he seems terrified of most of them and his comments about the guys around him say otherwise:
"He has a great face and figure. His personality as well as his skills are great. I thought it is rare that someone is this perfect. So, I guessed he must have an extreme weakness somewhere."
  • Apologetic Attacker: Before delivering justice, his Moah side always says, "It is not my nature to kill, but..." Every damn time.
  • Badass Adorable: Yuuri looks like a cute teenage boy, but his magical ability, though he can't harness all of it, is terrifying.
  • Badass Normal: His human form has his moments, like when he uses his knowledge of baseball to disarm Wolfram in their first battle.
  • Battle Aura: His Maoh side has a dark blue aura when it activates to engage in battle.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Yuuri is one of the nicest rulers in existence. However, if you hit one of the above berserk buttons, well...
  • Can't Stay Normal: When Yuuri runs home after being betrayed by Sara, Bob sends him into an alternative universe where Yuuri and Shouri have normal, everyday lives, Murata doesn't exist, and no one else knows anything. Yuuri chooses toreturn to the demon world.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Yuuri is pretty much incapable of not helping people in need—even if they aren't in as much need as he thinks they are.
  • Curtains Match the Window: A sign that he's nobility in the demon world is having both black hair and black eyes, which are rare there.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Yuuri has black hair, black eyes, and his royal uniform is black, but he's got the personality of sunshine and is intent on peace.
  • Distressed Dude: Played straight and subverted. Yuuri spends the beginning of the series waiting to be rescued when he gets into trouble, but eventually realizes he needs to act for himself because there won't always be someone there to save him.
  • High Hopes, Zero Talent: Yuuri's passion is baseball, but he's only average at it in his own world and tries to make up for it with his leadership skills.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Yuuri trusts...well, literally anyone. Including a kid who tried to assassinate him, defending her so deeply he adopts her. But his trust in everyone usually turns out okay because people want to rise to his faith.
  • I Am Who?: He did not realize he'd been specifically selected by The Great One and given Julia's soul specifically to fulfill that task, until, well, he's told about it.
  • Improbable Age: He become the Demon King at 15 years old.
  • Making a Splash: The first magic Yuuri is able to harness is magic, thanks to a gift from one of the shrine maidens. It tends to be his most common use.
  • Maou the Demon King: After being literally flushed to another world, he's crowned Maoh, the Demon King. However, he strives to create a world in which demons and humans can live together in peace.
  • Mirror Character: Yuuri and Saralegui are both charismatic kings crowned as teenagers with the immense magic power that comes from one human parent intermixed with the magical blood from Yuuri's demon father and Sara's Saintsland mother. But Yuuri is the Demon King, and Saralegui is descended from Saintsland.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Because Wolfram is very possessive, he assumes literally anything is a sign of cheating.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: In Japan, Yuuri is just a high school student who loves baseball. After getting transported to a magical dimension, he becomes the Demon King.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Whenever he goes out, the people always shout he dyes his hair and put contacts in, but doesn't change any other part of his appearance. Justified, as most commoners don't see their king on a daily basis and only know that he has black hair and black eyes.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: His hair stays the same length when his demon side takes over in the manga, but in the anime it tends to flow down around his shoulders.
  • Protectorate: Everyone else is bound and determined to protect him, despite his badass abilities. Makes sense--he's their king, after all.
  • The Redeemer: Yuuri performs this on just about everyone. Yuuri wants everyone to be friends, war to never happen, and everyone to simply...stop hurting each other. And because of his genuine belief this can work, several people come to like him and follow him, including a man who defected from Yuuri's kingdom long before Yuuri was even born, and Sara, the Manipulative Bastard king of another kingdom. He even manages to redeem The Great One who had been corrupted as is basically God in the setting.
  • Reincarnated as the Opposite Sex: He's the reincarnation of Susanna Julia von Wincott, a noblewoman whose soul carried across worlds after her death to be reincarnated. He doesn't actually remember anything about his life as Julia, and for the most part they're treated as different people, except for a few people who were especially close to Julia and have strange feelings about the situation.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Yuuri often personally deals with his kingdoms more direct threats more often than not.
  • Split Personality: Near the beginning, Yuuri can't seem to remember what his demon side does, which might qualify it for this. However, near the end of season three, he begins to control his power.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Is it Yuri, or Yuuri?
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Yuuri's cheerful personality and determination to help has made him intensely popular with almost everyone who meets him, not only in his own kingdom but abroad in human countries that should be his enemy.
  • Unlucky Everydude: An Ordinary High-School Student, who is kinda dorky, not very popular with girls, and not as good at baseball as he'd like to be...becomes the friggin' king!
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: When Yuuri gets well and truly angry, his Maoh side tends to take over, who is generally much less forgiving than Yuuri usually is.

Demon Nobles

    In General
  • The Von Trope Family: Most of them bear "von" in their names as proof of their noble status. Conrad is an exception because his father was not a demon noble.

    Wolfram von Bielefeld
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wolfram_von_bielefeld.png
Voiced by Mitsuki Saiga (JPN) and Mona Marshall (ENG)

Wolfram is a demon who can manipulate fire. Near the beginning of the series, he is rather immature and arrogant, acting very spoiled and causing the Maoh's other attendants to give him nicknames like 'Little Lord Brat', but over the course of the series, he matures. He becomes Yuuri's fiancé due to Yuuri not knowing that slapping a demon noble is considered a marriage proposal. Although he did not approve of being engaged to Yuuri at first, he changes his mind when Yuuri's demon side kicks his butt in battle. He soon grows very protective over Yuuri, yelling at anyone who comes too close to him. He is especially jealous of Conrad.

Wolfram can be impulsive with his decisions, especially in battle and believes that being the strongest is the way to win. He is also very proud of his demon blood, convinced that it makes him superior to his brother Conrad or any other person with human blood in them.

  • Bishie Sparkle: Wolfram sparkles with good looks.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Nobody is allowed to touch Yuuri except him.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: His own mother teases him about his feminine looks, claiming that he looks so much like her that he'll inevitably have guys all over him.
  • Elemental Personalities: Wolfram's talents dwell in fire magic, and his hot temper matches the element.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Wolfram's mother insists he must be popular with men because of his good looks.
  • Fantastic Racism: He initially dislikes humans because of his demon pride. He does not like to admit that Conrad is his brother because he's half-human, even though he cares for him. His attitude towards humans improves throughout the series.
  • Good is Not Nice: Wolfram is fiercely loyal and deeply principled, but also just an ass sometimes.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's always itching for a fight.
  • In the Hood: He occasionally goes outside wearing a hood. Apparently, he would stand out too much if he didn't.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Wolfram tends to rush into battles head-first.
  • Love at First Punch: Ever since Yuuri slapped him and defeated him in a duel, Wolfram considers himself Yuuri's fiancé.
  • Playing with Fire: His magic is mostly based around fire.
  • Pretty Boy: Bishōnen is the first word out of Yuuri's mouth upon seeing Wolfram the first time. His beauty was enough to cause hospitalized patients to make a full recovery.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: A male example. A pink, frilly nightgown seems to be a major favorite of his. Before he starts trying to convince Yuuri to like him, and much later when he sleeps in his own bed again, he wears white pajamas. Perhaps he is attempting to imitate his mother, a great seductress.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He wear frilly pink pajamas.
  • Royal Brat: Wolfram was raised a prince and it shows. Gunter has made a habit of calling him "little lord brat" and even Gwendal can't find it in him to argue.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: He can summon lions made of fire to take down his opponents.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Bielfield or Bielefelt?
  • Stalker with a Crush: He follows Yuuri practically everywhere so he can keep an eye on him, and even sneaks into Yuuri's bedroom at night.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He bears a striking resemblance to his mother.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He becomes calmer and less prejudiced over time, and his affection for Yuuri becomes more genuine.
  • Tsundere: Harsh type. Wolfram is very mean, prideful, and haughty, but his softer side tends surface when he's alone with Yuri and they finally have a moment together. Murata even calls him one in the third OVA:
Even if Lord von Bielefeld is an incurable, tsundere, selfish brat, do you really think he would do all of this of his own will?
  • Weak-Willed: He ends to get mind-controlled a lot over the course of the anime.
  • The Worf Effect: He tends to lose battles against more powerful opponents, usually needing Yuuri to save him.

    Conrart (Conrad) Weller
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/weller_conrad.png
Voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa (JPN, adult), Ayumi Tsunematsu (JPN, child) and Doug Erholtz (ENG, adult), Barbara Goodson (ENG, child)

When Yuuri is found by Adalbert during his initial arrival to the demon world, Conrad jumps in to save him. Because he is kind, understanding and loyal, he gains Yuuri's trust very quickly and becomes quite close to him. Conrad is usually the one that Yuuri will talk to when a problem arises and Conrad will also be first person to save Yuuri if there is any chance of danger.

Although Conrad is rather mature, he sometimes forgets that other people care about him quite a lot and therefore runs off on his own to complete missions that might put him in danger. Usually, the rest of the group (or at least part of it) catches up to him and reminds him that there's no need to go on your own. In a way, this attitude of his contrasts Yuuri's, who would prefer to convince his friends to join him on missions. His actions also cause much confusion between Yuuri's subjects, however, he always believes that he is helping Yuuri in the best way that he can.

Yuuri will refer to Conrad as his godfather, as Conrad is the one that gave him his name.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He gets his arm lopped off while protecting Yuuri. He gets better.
  • Badass Normal: Not having magical powers hasn't stopped him from becoming The Great Demon Kingdom's best swordsman.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Conrad may seem like a sweetie most of the time, but fuck with Yuuri and you're in for a world of pain.
  • Birds of a Feather: Of Yuuri's various love interests, Conrad is the one most similar to him in both personality and interests. He makes an active effort to learn things that Yuuri likes, such as baseball.
  • Character Development: Pre-storyline. It's shown that he was a very different person before Yuuri's father made him change.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Brown eyes, and brown hair.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Conrart seems friend and normal, but he has a lot of angst from his half-breed heritage and being sent to go die in war.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: He was already likely bisexual given his history with Julia and present interactions with Yuuri and Jozak, but then it's also revealed in the manga that he once dated a woman who was a "reverse mermaid". Yuuri even lampshades this with a joke about how wide Conrad's "strike range" is.
  • Fantastic Racism: Although he was protected from the worst disadvantages of being half-demon as a child, twenty years ago when The Great Demon Kingdom was at war with their human neighbors, he and Jozak were sent on a suicide mission, leading a company of fellow half-breeds, in order to prove their loyalty. Conrad and Jozak were the only ones to make it back.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: His mother was a demon and his father was a human.
  • Heartbroken Badass: As a result of what happened to Julia.
  • Heelā€“Face Turn: In episode 40, when he takes several arrows to the chest protecting Yuuri in the most dramatic way possible.
  • Humble Hero: Often too humble, as he has a tendency to put his personal safety way too far down the line of his priorities.
  • Hyper-Awareness: In the manga and novels, Conrad is able to determine the country of origin, social standing, and main occupation of a man in disguise with just a quick glance. Too bad he doesn't use these mysterious powers all the time.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Yuuri outright calls him one.
  • The Lancer: To Yuuri, as he essentially follows the king wherever he goes and usually plays a key role in many of their adventures.
  • Mangst: Conrad has lots of Mangst concerning the death of Julia and the events of the war 20 years previous.
  • Master Swordsman: He has a reputation as The Demon Kingdom's greatest swordsman.
  • Meaningful Appearance: He has brown eyes to emphasize his human ancestry in a family of made up of mostly Demons.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: He does lack magical powers due to his human lineage, though he seems to have inherited the demon's longevity.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: Conrad is the captain of the Demon Kingdom's army and an upstanding gentleman.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His real name is Conrart, but Yuuri calls him Conrad. Everyone else does too, either to keep it consistent, or because it's easier to say.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Except in flashbacks and very rare Not So Stoic moments.
  • The Quiet One: Definitely the calmest and most understanding of the group, though be careful if you cross him.
  • Rebel Relaxation: Conrad's favorite past-time is leaning up walls. Yeah, those walls would have long fallen down without him holding them up.
  • Royal Blood: As a half-blood, he has no claim to any demonic lineage (also why he has no 'von' in his name unlike his brothers), in spite of being the son of the former Maoh. However, the Wellers were the original kings of the Big Shimaron before the Belal family dethroned them. He only threatens to lay claim to his lands in the third season as part of a political gambit, as he has very little interest in being anything besides Yuuri's bodyguard.
  • Ship Tease: With Yuuri especially. Even the other characters notice, as it's the main reason Wolfram is so jealous of Conrad. He also gets some with Josak.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: The Weller genes seem to all be dominant! And full of win.
  • Warrior Prince: His mother was the last Maoh and his father's side were the original rulers of Big Shimaron, but Conrad is content to be Yuuri's protector knight.

    Gwendal von Voltaire
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gwendal_von_voltaire.png
Voiced by Akio Ōtsuka (JPN) and Dan Woren (ENG)

The most aloof and mysterious of Yuuri's subjects, Gwendal first doubts Yuuri's ability to lead the kingdom. After Yuuri summons the Maoh's spirit and defeat's Wolfram, Gwendal realizes that Yuuri is the true king. He's more logical and less compassionate than the other members on Yuuri's team, which leads him to disagree with Yuuri on a lot of decisions. Still, Gwendal always respects Yuuri's authority, giving Yuuri advice when he asks for it and aiding Yuuri in plans he might not completely agree with. As a very professional and stiff man, Gwendal seems to have very little interest in useless conversations and relationships in general, making him initially difficult for Yuuri to get along with. However, they soon learn to get along with each other, although Gwendal will occasionally reprimand Yuuri for making naive or foolish mistakes.

Gwendal has a love for small, cute things. Usually, this refers to animals such as kittens, dolphins and Bearbees. His personal office is filled with stuffed animals that he knitted on his own. It's stated that Gwendal began knitting because his childhood friend Anissina gave him lots of stress.

  • Aloof Big Brother: Though he cares in his own way, Gwendal seems to more or less be this towards Conrad, and especially, Wolfram.
  • Bothering by the Book: Early on in the light novels, at one point he's seen to take out his frustration with Yuuri's inability to do his own paperwork by storming in late to a meeting and...addressing him in keigo, an ultra-formal speech register which is totally appropriate for a retainer addressing his king. It would be incredibly rude for Yuuri not to respond the same way... but as a fifteen year old boy, Yuuri isn't really good with keigo, and stammers his way awkwardly through both his response and his insistence that there's really no need to be so formal.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Though he tries to hide it, Gwendal adores anything small and cute. His blushing and attempts to pretend he doesn't care are made all the more priceless by how stoic and humorless he is in nearly every other situation.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Gwendal's magic lies in the earthen realm.
  • Face Palm: Sometimes you can't blame the guy. Other times, you're face palming with him.
  • Friend to All Children: Goes along with his love of cute things. For someone so gruff, he's always surprisingly gentle with Greta, and at the start of Season 2 after they rescue a group of kidnapped noble children from the surrounding human kingdoms, there's a brief scene of Gwendal patching up their cuts...and drawing cute faces on their bandages.
  • Only Sane Man: He's arguably this, especially when Yuuri's got a particularity reckless and naive idea.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Gwendal is always glaring or frowning at everyone. At the beginning of the series Yuuri usually wonders what happened to make him mad, but Conrad cheerfully assures him that Gwendal "was just born with that face."
  • Promotion to Parent: Subtly done, but in the episode where we learn about Conrad's father, Gwendal clearly considers himself the man of the house after his stepfather leaves (despite looking about the age that Yuuri is now), and it's often noted that their mother hardly acts like a parent herself most of the time.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He knits and loves cute animals.
  • The Comically Serious: Gwendal is a very serious, even dour, person, with a strong sense of duty and incredible devotion to his responsibilities. So naturally, when background events or sub-plots get zany, he's the one that gets targeted by them.
  • The Spymaster: He's the one who orders Josak around most of the time. If someones digging for information, chances are Gwendal told them to.
  • The Strategist: More so in the beginning, before Ken Murata gets involved.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Whenever he sees Anissina, he knows he's about to get used as a toy in some experiment.
  • With Friends Like These...: Him and Anissina, since she's his childhood friend he seems unable to escape from as much as he'd like to.

    Gunter von Christ
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/guenter_von_christ.png
Voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue (JPN) and Sam Riegel (ENG)

Gunter is the man in charge of teaching Yuuri while he's in the demon kingdom. In other words, he's Yuuri's private tutor, who Yuuri spends much of his time trying to avoid, for obvious reasons. Nevertheless, he's quite competent in his job, and is very determined to make sure that Yuuri is as educated as he could possibly be for the real world.

At first, Gunter seems a little like an idiot, or perhaps more like a teenager girl in love. He tends to be rather overprotective of Yuuri, fussing over every little thing and freaking out whenever he goes missing. Supposedly (at least in the manga), Gunter was actually quite the organized, professional man before he met Yuuri.

Outside the castle, Gunter is actually quite a good fighter. He is extremely good with a sword and being of demon blood, has his own magical abilities.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's actually a very accomplished swordsman. And despite his dramatics, he's very perceptive and adept when it comes to politics - he and Gwendal essentially hold the country together when Yuuri isn't around.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: As crazy as he can be, he's very competent in his job. He's also a very hard worker, as Yuuri learns when Gunter takes a break.

    Cecilie von Spitzweg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cecilie_von_spitzberg.png
Voiced by Masako Katsuki (JPN) and Karen Strassman (credited as Kirsty Pape) (ENG)

The previous Demon Queen and the mother of Gwendal, Conrad and Wolfram. All three of them have different fathers and Cecilie always seems to be on a 'search for love'.

    Anissina von Karbelnikof
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anissina_von_karbelnikoff.png
Voiced by Minami Takayama (JPN) and Michelle Ruff (ENG)

A head-strong woman filled with lots of ideas for inventions that are usually ridiculous, or have a ridiculous way of being powered. Anissina seems to think women are the future of the kingdom, with men being too reckless and incompetent to do anything well. Regardless of this, she is rather fond of Yuuri and does her best to help him... whether that is good or bad.

Whenever she has a new invention, she tends to force Gwendal to try it, or if she is unable to find him (as he usually hides from her), she has Gunter try it. Her inventions never seem to work out the way she wants them to. It's revealed that she and Gwendal grew up together, and that she was the one to teach Gwendal how to knit, although she doesn't believe that Gwendal has any talent in the field.

Greta is very fond of Anissina and seems to look up to her like an older sister.

  • Arranged Marriage: Her brother sets her up in one, believing that she is unhappy. Of course, Anissina doesn't want this at all and tries to get Gwendal to fake a double suicide with her. He refuses. She then has Darcos play the role, but of course, Gwendal interrupts at the last minute and rides away with her. They have a moment by sunlit water... and then proceed to yell at each other. Her brother (and everyone else) mistakes this act for love.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's got red hair to match her passionate, aggressive personality.
  • Running Gag: Her inventions will work... but are either require a ridiculous amount of power or don't work the way she wants them to.
  • With Friends Like These...: Gwendal is her childhood friend, but he really seems to rather want nothing to do with her as adults, as her favorite guinea pig.

    Adalbert von Grants
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adalbert_wiki_image_9091.jpg
Voiced by Masaki Terasoma (JPN) and Kirk Thornton (ENG)

Adalbert shows up in the very first episode, where he rescues a clueless Yuuri from being stoned to death by frightened human villagers, and uses his magic powers to awaken Yuuri's ability to speak the local language...after which Yuuri is promptly rescued from Adalbert by Conrad. A man of mysterious motives, he defected from the demon kingdom in favor of the human nations, believing them fools for blindly following the will of their ancient king. Despite his anger toward the demon kingdom in general, and Conrad in particular, he's about equally likely to be on their side as that of their enemies when he shows up.

  • Defector from Decadence: He couldn't stand what the demon kingdom had become after following The Great One's will even to the point of Julia sacrificing herself, so he left and apparently doesn't ever intend to return.
  • The Extremist Was Right: In a way. Turns out The Great One had been corrupted long ago, and although most of his plans were for the ultimate benefit of the demon kingdom, a little more mistrust of his motives might have been warranted, especially near the end.
  • Heartbroken Badass: He really did love Julia, and her death was the catalyst for his departure from the kingdom, as well as the source of his continued animosity.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Bitter, cynical, and ultimately wants peace and safety for the people he's decided to regard as his own.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: His engagement to Susanna Julia von Wincott was apparently arranged, but they're shown to have been very much in love.
  • Reincarnation Romance: With Yuuri, for the same reasons as Conrad: Yuuri is Julia's reincarnation, and the show goes out of its way to highlight their similarities more than once.
  • Screw Destiny: Doesn't care for The Great One's millennia-long reign of control over all the major decisions of the demon kingdom.

    Stoffel von Spitzweg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stoffel_von_spitzweg_wiki_image_5178.jpg
Voiced by Unshō Ishizuka (JPN, adult), Ayumi Tsunematsu (JPN, young) and Terrance Stone (ENG, adult) (credited as Terry Roberts), Jessica Gee-George (ENG, young)

Cecilie's older brother, the poisonous advisor who took advantage of his sister's position as Maou and did most of the running of the kingdom on her behalf, leading to a great deal of unpleasantness and tragedy twenty years ago. He seems eager to repeat the process by ingratiating himself with the new Maou, but his nephews and Gunter are adamant about blocking his way, and even on the rare occasions he manages to get Yuuri alone, Yuuri proves Too Dumb to Fool, which has the effect of turning Stoffel's political machinations into comically, pathetically sycophantic attempts to win Yuuri's approval any way he can. (It helps that his and Cecilie's childhood friend Raven is clearly the brains of the operation, too.)

  • Affably Evil: Stoffel is a nobleman through and through, quite charming when he wants to be, and always a refined, dignified fellow. Well, he tries at the 'dignified' part, anyway.
  • The Chew Toy: Filler episodes love to curse him with horribly slapstick luck whenever he's plotting or scheming something (getting peed on when he volunteers to change a baby's diaper, falling into holes), which is most of the time. Even his first, more serious arc has his plot comically unravel when Jozak sneaks Yuuri out by putting both of them in maid uniforms, followed by him mistaking Gunter for a vulnerable noncombatant and utterly failing at taking him hostage. It's always ultimately his fault that he's in these situations, so it's always Played for Laughs.
  • Evil Chancellor: Moreso in the backstory, but he keeps on trying to become this for Yuuri, too.
  • Harmless Villain: At least as long as Yuuri's retainers are keeping an eye on him and Yuuri won't give him the time of day. Also, without Hypercompetent Sidekick Raven helping him, he's shown to be pretty useless and not all that bright.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: Most of the reason he's useless without Raven.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Stoffel/Stuffel von Spitzweig/Spitzweg/Spitzberg
  • Villain Decay: The first-season arc where he shows up has him kidnapping Yuuri and nearly starting a civil war. After that, he quickly decays into harmless comedy, since his only real power is political and no one's trusting him with anything after that.

    Lord Geiganhuber Grisela
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gegenhuber_griesela.png
Voiced by Hiroaki Hirata (JPN) and Richard Cansino (credited as Edward Villa) (ENG)

A minor noble and a cousin of Gwendal's. He was involved in some kind of tragedy involving Conrad and Adalbert twenty years ago, that no one seems to want to talk about with Yuuri. When it was over, Hube was exiled (officially 'sent on a mission to recover lost artifacts'), and went willingly after having failed to protect the country that he had loved, however misguidedly. While in exile, he fell in love with a human woman, Nikola, who we first meet some time later, after they've been separated, only to discover that she's bearing his child.

They encounter Hube himself not long afterward, acting as the bodyguard to a corrupt businessman. He forces a confrontation with Conrad, which results in his being injured and brought back to The Great Demon Kingdom, where more drama ensues, ending in the obviously-reformed and regretful Hube being forgiven by all parties, after which he remains utterly loyal to Yuuri.

  • The Atoner: By the time he was exiled, he was too shaken by the understanding of his own misdeeds to protest, and certainly by the time we meet him he agrees that he deserved no better.
  • Cool Mask: When we first meet him again, it's not clear who he is because of the mask he wears.
  • Death Seeker: The reason that he chose to become the bodyguard of a corrupt businessman was because he wanted a job where strong opponents would try to kill him, figuring eventually one would succeed. Eventually he got tired of waiting and went out looking for fights, challenging anyone who seemed worthwhile. Finally he saw Conrad, realized it must be fate, and attacked the kid Conrad was protecting to force Conrad to fight hard enough to kill him. ...Too bad he didn't realize that kid was the new Maou.
  • Dub Name Change: Probably accidental: his first and last names are reversed in the dub, into Lord Grisela Geiganhuber.
  • Eye Scream: His eye was gouged out in an attempt to open one of the four boxes. It didn't work, since the key is Gwendal's eye, not his.
  • Fantastic Racism: Geiganhuber honestly and truly did believe that the half-demon living among them held more loyalty to humans than to the country they lived in, and were thus passing information. The reason he believed this was that there was of course no other way that the superior demons could be faring so badly in a war against mere humans.
  • Foreshadowing: The patch over his left eye. He reveals that the damage was done when he was captured in Svelera and they tried to use his eye as the key to open a Forbidden Box. The keys to the Boxes run in families: it's actually his cousin Gwendal's left eye they needed.
  • Humiliation Conga: The stuff up to his exile, he deserved...
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: A noble can't really be exiled, per se, so they sent him on a 'mission to regain his honor' by looking for lost artifacts in human lands that they didn't really think he'd ever find.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Gegenhuber? Geiganhuber?
  • Trauma Conga Line: ...but even after he understood how wrong he'd been and regretted his actions, fate definitely decided to keep kicking him in the ribs for a while.

    Susanna Julia von Wincott

Voiced by Risa Mizuno (JPN) and Joan-Carol O'Connell (ENG)

One of the Three Great Witches, along with Cecilie and Anissina. She was known as "Julia the White". She was engaged to Adalbert and was good friends with Conrad. During the war, she overspent her magic by healing too many people, which resulted in her death. Gisela was one who remained by Julia's side during the latter's final moments. After her death, Julia's soul was reincarnated as Yuuri.

  • Action Girl: She was a top class martial artist.
  • Combat Medic: She excelled in martial arts and healing magic.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her hair and eyes were light blue.
  • Handicapped Badass: Julia was blind since birth, but that didn't stop her from mastering martial arts.
  • The Lost Lenore: Adalbert and Conrad still mourn her death in the present day, which influences their interactions with Yuuri due to him being her reincarnation.
  • Posthumous Character: She's long dead by the start of the series, since the protagonist is her reincarnation.

Other Residents

    Josak Gurrier
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/josak_gurrier.png
Voiced by Masanori Takeda (JPN, adult), Kimiko Saito (JPN, child) and Tom Fahn (credited as Marvin Lee) (ENG, adult), Cindy Robinson (ENG, child)

Josak is a spy in the Demon Kingdom army who is half-demon, half-human. Conrad's father rescued him from the human lands when he was little, and since then Josak and Conrad have been close friends and faced many dangers together. He is a master of disguise and has been known to pose as a woman on various missions. He even carries a dress along with him at all times for good luck.

Josak is very comical and expressive, facing every situation with light-heartedness and funny quips. He often does this to hide his own feelings, particularly anger and resentment at the treatment of half-humans such as him. While he is close friends with Conrad, they often don't see eye to eye which can lead to arguments or even physical violence. However, in the end, he tends to go along with whatever Conrad wants, since he is the superior officer.

At first, he seems a little skeptical of Yuuri's ability, and his harsh commentary causes Yuuri to become less confident in his abilities. However, Yuuri decides to trust him with the jewel that powers Morgif, believing that Josak will do with it whatever is best for the kingdom as a whole, and this gesture earns him Josak's loyalty.

  • Childhood Friends: He has been close friends with Conrad since childhood.
  • Disguised in Drag: He crossdresses as part of his job as a spy, but the biceps give him away instantly.
  • Fantastic Racism: Suffers from this as a result of being half-demon, and a great deal more so than Conrad, who was protected by his father and by his mother's noble status; Jozak was raised by his human mother (until she died of malnutrition) in a tiny, run-down village where half-demon and their families were sent to live away from everyone else.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: His mother was a human and his father a demon.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Him and Conrad. Well, most of the time... and the "heterosexual" part is suspect.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Like Conrad, he also has half-human ancestry and lacks magical powers as a result, but considers The Great Demon Kingdom his home.
  • Naked on Arrival: First encountered naked, in a public bath.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He crossdresses. This does not stop him from being a badass spy and soldier.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: Jozak prefers sleeveless tunics to show off his biceps.
  • Son of a Whore: He was born from a traveling demon and a human prostitute.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Jozak or Yozak or Josak? Gurrier or Grier or Grillet?
  • Stepford Smiler: He starts out extremely bitter and cynical underneath his flippant, lighthearted demeanor, and while he does grow to trust and like Yuuri, the leftover emotional scarring from the abuse and discrimination suffered by half-demon is still evident.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: He has disguised himself as a woman more than a few times. A rather flirtatious woman at that.

    Greta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/greta_maou.png
Voiced by Motoko Kumai (JPN) and Rebecca Forstadt (ENG)

The adopted daughter of Yuuri and Wolfram.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her birth parents (or at least the people who claimed to be her birth parents) were just awful. Her actual mom had a very good reason for abandoning Greta and she has shown deep remorse for leaving her daughter behind. She wanted to take Greta back but felt like it would be better if she was raised by Yuuri who would never abandon her.
  • Happily Adopted: Yuuri adopts her and she loves her new father as much as she loves the memories of her now-dead parents.

Earth

    Ken Murata
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/murata_ken.png
Voiced by Kōki Miyata (JPN) and Grant George (ENG)

Murata makes an appearance in the first episode, as a boy being bullied. Yuuri, being a fighter for justice interrupts them - giving Murata the chance to run away. He doesn't forget this act of kindness, however, as he and Yuuri are good friends from that point onward.

Murata cannot travel between Earth and the Demon world on his own, so he must travel with Yuuri.

  • Amplifier Artifact: Just his presence makes Yuuri's magic stronger.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Just like Yuuri and Shori, he's marked as The Great Sage by being a "Double black" demon with black hair and black eyes. Except that time that he dyed his hair blond. He dyed it back. Or it faded out. It's never specified.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He evolves into this as he stops playing stupidity.
  • Distressed Dude: In the human world, he has no means of defending himself and often relies on Yuuri to save his ass. It's pretty much the same in the Demon World, which is why he stays on the sidelines to avoid this. Most of the time, this is an intentional example.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: Implied in the novel. The reason he seems to only hang out with Yuuri is because he doesn't have any friends that will talk to him. It would explain why he's always bullied in the first place.
  • Karma Houdini: Near the end of season 2, he basically jeopardizes Yuuri's life by pushing him into The Great One who needs him as a vessel and almost destroys the whole world with a gamble that could defeat the Originators. While he never turned on anyone, it's to be noted that he's never punished for putting everyone at risk and when Yuuri brings it up at the end, Murata just replies, "I knew you wouldn't give up. If you did, we'd all be dead.
  • Meaningful Background Event: Watch Murata closely if he's in the background of a scene. If you can't see his eyes, he's plotting or hiding something.
  • Muggle Best Friend: Subverted. Murata seems to be the normal kid on the on Earth, but he turns out to be just as famous as Yuuri...
  • Non-Action Guy: Except that one incident where he is shown capable of doing martial arts...but he never does again.
  • Past-Life Memories: He's the reincarnation of the Great Sage and he retains all the memories of his previous incarnations as well. They actually caused him some distress as a child, since he had trouble telling the difference between past and present, and it's occasionally hinted that he still has trouble defining his own identity separate from his previous incarnations, especially the Sage.
  • Reincarnation: Of the Great Sage.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Now and then. It happens every single time he's plotting something or hiding something...even if the camera isn't focused on him. Keep an eye on him when he's in the background of a scene: if you can't see his eyes, something is guaranteed to be up.
  • She-Fu: A rare male example however, he has only shown to fight with martial arts once during one arc and is never brought up again as he stays on the sidelines.
  • The Strategist: Murata carries thousands of years of memories from different lives, and he was known as The Great Sage before that. His speciality is in strategy and tactics and is Yuuri's top consultant.
  • There Are No Therapists: Averted! We find out he was in therapy as a kid to help him deal with the memories of all his past lives, and teach him to assert his own personal identity over theirs.

    Shori Shibuya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shibuya_shouri.png
Voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi (JPN), D.C. Douglas (ENG, 1st) and Patrick Seitz (ENG, 2nd)

Yuuri's older brother.

  • Drunk with Power: When Shori first learns to use magic this happens to him and his desire to protect Yuuri increases.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Shouri decided to be Yuuri's protector when they were both quite young. He...doesn't take it well when he winds up in the demon world and Yuuri doesn't really need his protection.
  • Making a Splash: Once he makes a pact with the elements.
  • Security Cling: He gives one to Yuuri in the fifth ova.
  • Skewed Priorities: When he and Yuuri switched bodies in episode 92 his only concern was that he'd never be able to embrace his beloved "Yu-chan" again.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Particularly compared to his little brother, Shori is a very serious individual...
  • Not So Stoic: ...but he winds up breaking through that stoicism a lot, especially when Yuuri is in danger.
