Imperial Family
Xue Hu
The daughter of the Ch'in Emperor who is believed to have been possessed by a supernatural creature. If she sees her reflection in anything she goes on a killing spree. On the day of her wedding to a Ch'in nobleman she went on a rampage and killed her betrothed and most of his party. Since then she has been locked away in her quarters by her father in the hope of keeping her violent sprees under control.
Tropes applying to Xue Hu:
- Demonic Possession: What everyone thinks happened to her. This is only half right, she was possessed by a mythical dragon.
- Girl in the Tower: She is kept imprisoned in her quarters after tearing her husband to pieces on their wedding night.
- Lady of War: She is normally very elegant and composed and is very skilled with a sword.
- She Is the King: Was raised as a son due to her father's lack of a male heir & will rule Ch'in after his death.
- Super-Strength: While possessed by the dragon, she is strong enough to bend steel bars.
- Unstoppable Rage / With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: When the dragon inside her cannot see its reflection, it goes into an unstoppable rage. This is very useful in a fight, but it's much harder to get the dragon to calm down afterward.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: Was this before getting possessed by the Celestial Dragon.
Bao
The apprentice to Master Lo Feng and a former slave. He and Moirin do not get along at first and he spends the first book being a Jerkass. Later on readers learn his tragic backstory and he becomes more sympathetic. Serves as Moirin's protector and later her lover throughout the Naamah trilogy.
Tropes applying to Bao:
- Back from the Dead: He is resurrected using Master Lo Feng's life force and Moirin's diadh-anam at the end of Kiss. He's not very pleased about it.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Moirin. This starts to diminish once they're forced to spend more time together on the long voyage to Ch'in.
- Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: He comes to feel this way about Moirin.
- Child by Rape: His father was a Tatar warlord who raped his mother during a raid into Ch'in.
- Chinese Boy
- Dark and Troubled Past: Was sold into a circus by his parents when he was 3.
- Distressed Dude: In Curse, when he is held in Kurugiri by Jagrati.
- Happily Married: To Moirin at the end of Curse.
- Jerkass: He acts like a jerk to Moirin early on. Later he develops into a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
- My Girl Is a Slut: Bao accepts Moirin's nature & doesn't expect her to be completely faithful to him once they're married.
- Psychic Link: With Moirin after his resurrection.
- The Quiet One: Hardly says a word in Kiss. He begins to talk more from Curse onwards.
- Recovered Addict: In Curse. He becomes addicted to opium while being held captive in Kurugiri, but is able to overcome his addiction after being rescued.
- Sex for Services: Offered himself as a sex slave to a man in the circus in exchange for stick fighting lessons.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: With Moirin during Curse.
- Unwanted Revival: Is none too happy about being brought back from death, but eventually comes to accept it.
Master Lo Feng Tzu
An old master from Ch'in who travels to Terre d'Ange and becomes Moirin's teacher.
Tropes applying to Lo Feng:
- Cool Old Guy
- Mentor Occupational Hazard: Dies at the end of Kiss, sacrificing his life to bring back Bao.
- Old Master: He is widely respected for his knowledge and is rumored to be over a hundred years old.
- Really 700 Years Old: Is said to be over 150 years old. We never find out if this is actually true, but the Emperor does say that Master Lo Feng was old even when he was young.
- Shipper on Deck: He gives Moirin & Bao a tonic made from snowdrop bulbs, knowing it was likely an aphrodisiac. Later, he resurrects Bao using Moirin's diadh-anam, essentially bonding their souls together.
