     Grainne mac Conor

Grainne mac Conor

Ruler of the Dalriada in the Phedre and Imriel trilogies.

Tropes applying to Grainne:

  • Action Girl: Like all Alban and Eiran women, Grainne is capable of defending herself in battle. In fact, as Phedre points out, Grainne is the most magnificent (and famous) Action Girl of them all, as she leads her people to war and slays a lot of enemies during the battles of Bryn Gorrydum and Troyes-le-Mont.
  • Adult Fear: Her younger son Eamonn ends up trapped in a Caerdiccan city, forced into fighting in its army against the enemy Valpetra, with the strong possibility of him being killed in battle there. Though it's unknown if Grainne actually hears of Eamonn's plight (and what her reaction would be, given Dalriada culture) it's still scary to think of her reaction if Eamonn had died in Lucca.
  • Amicable Exes: With Fergus, Conor's father. They're still friendly toward one another even years after they ended their affair.
  • Badass Bisexual: Grainne is the ruler of the Dalriada who can send her people to war with just a word, and who fights like a demon on the battlefield. As Phedre finds out, she is also attracted to women as well as men, happily sleeping with Phedre during the latter's stay in Innisclan in Kushiel's Dart.
  • BadassInCharge: She's the warrior queen of the Dalriada.
  • Big Good: Is this throughout the series. In Kushiel's Justice it's more prominent, as she uses her authority as the Lady of Innisclan to summon the Maghuin Dhonn and try to negotiate with them about releasing Imriel from Morwen's charm.
  • Blood Knight: Grainne is as bloodthirsty as anyone in Alba— she loves the thought of riding into battle to retake Bryn Gorrydum, and snaps at Eamonn's reluctance to send Innisclan to war (Eamonn being the more cautious of the two).
  • Blue Blood: Her family rule the Dalriada from Innisclan.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Grainne is very imposing— her very appearance makes it obvious that she's a very capable fighter. She has a very bloodthirsty, excitable personality as well, especially when Phedre first meets her. This is later toned down a bit in the Imriel trilogy, emphasizing the maturity she has gained in the years since her brother's death.
  • Fiery Redhead: Grainne has flaming red hair, and a temperament to match it.
  • Hot-Blooded: Compared to her brother, very. While Eamonn is reluctant to charge into battle in a moment's notice, Grainne is, and snaps at her brother when he disagrees with her about sending their clan to war in Kushiel's Dart.
  • Nice Girl: Despite her fierce appearance and her blunt, Blood Knight culture, Grainne is a kind and generous woman at heart. Even when the Cullach Gorrym shun the Maghuin Dhonn, Grainne does not, treating fairly with their people and welcoming them in Dalriada territory. She realises, unlike the Cullach Gorrym, that not all of the Maghuin Dhonn are mischievous and dangerous and that the race should not be persecuted as a whole for something which happened centuries ago (which is also something that is shrouded in myth).
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Grainne is hot-headed and confrontational; Eamonn is more cautious and level-headed.
  • Pregnant Badass: Goes into battle at Bryn Gorrydum and later in Terre D'Ange while pregnant with her son Eamonn. The knowledge of it shocks Ysandre, who is not accustomed to the fighting culture of Alba and Eire.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Is one of the most fair and level-headed leaders in the series. She is the only leader in Alba to treat willingly with the Maghuin Dhonn and maintains that they are not as terrible as they are rumoured to be.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Hot tempered Grainne is the red oni while the calmer more rational Eamonn is the blue oni.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Eamonn and Grainne are the exact opposite of each other, which causes a lot of bickering between them. However, they work incredibly well as a team once the right balance is found between them, and for all their bickering they truly care for one another.

     Eamonn mac Conor

Eamonn mac Conor

Ruler of the Dalriada alongside his sister in Kushiel's Dart. He is killed during the battle outside Troyes-le-Monte. Eamonn mac Grainne is named after him.

Tropes applying to Eamonn:

  • Pride: Has a lot of it. He can't bear to not have anything which Grainne has, and is easily offended if anyone insults his courage or implies that he is a coward.

     Brennan mac Grainne
Grainne's eldest son.

     Eamonn mac Grainne

Tropes applying to Eamonn:

  • Adult Fear: He is trapped in Lucca during the siege there and forced into fighting in Gallus' Red Scourge, all the while knowing that he could die in the battle. He almost is killed during the final battle; Imriel manages to save his life by distracting the Valpetran soldiers who are attacking him.
  • Badass Bookworm: For all his 'barbarian' ways, Eamonn is deeply intrigued by the cultures of other nations, as well as philosophical questions and puzzles. He wants to know why things happen the way they do, why people act the way they do, and is determined to find the answers he seeks someday. He is especially fascinated by Tiberium, which has a scholarly reputation, and sets out to study at the University in Tiberium after his stay in Terre D'Ange. Much later, Eamonn returns to Dalriada a more well-educated and knowledgeable person, and resolves to begin an academy in Innisclan dedicated to scholarly pursuits.
  • Badass in Charge: Eamonn is made the leader of his and Imriel's band of soldiers during the siege of Lucca.
  • Babies Ever After: By the time they attend Imriel and Sidonie's wedding at the end of Imriel's trilogy, Eamonn and Brigitta have an infant son who is already learning to crawl.
  • The Big Guy: Is very tall and muscled, and also very easy-going.
  • Blue Blood: His family rules Dalriada from Innisclan.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Eamonn is tall and muscled, and very excitable at times.
  • Dead Guy Junior: He is named after his uncle Eamonn mac Conor, who was killed in battle against the Skaldi at Troyes-le-Mont.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father is Quintilius Rousse, Admiral of the D'Angeline Royal Fleet. Eamonn knows this very well, and even seeks to meet him himself and get to know him.
  • Happily Married: To Brigitta, after the events of Kushiel's Justice.
  • I Will Find You: Falls in love with Brigitta, a Skaldic woman, in Imriel's trilogy, and after she leaves for Skaldia with her brother Eamonn vows to find her.
  • Love at First Punch: Brigitta is extremely prickly and ill-tempered, even toward Eamonn, but somehow Eamonn manages to fall in love with her, something which is eventually reciprocated.
  • Mixed Ancestry: He is half-D'Angeline, half-Eiran.
  • Nice Guy: He is extremely easy-going, open-minded and fair.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Eamonn is a perfect example of this trope, and proud of it.

     Conor mac Grainne

Conor mac Grainne

Son of Grainne with an unamed lover, later revealed to be of the Maghuin Dhonn. The third trilogy reveals that he later married Alais de la Courcel.

Tropes applying to Conor:

  • Disappeared Dad: His father takes no part in his life at all. No one even knows who he is until Grainne admits that she had an affair with one of the Maghuin Dhonn, with Conor being the result of it.
  • Happily Married: To Alais, sometime after the end of Imriel's trilogy.
  • Mixed Ancestry: He is half-Eiran, half-Maghuin Dhonn.
