List of characters from Life With Kurami.

Ana Kirkland

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ana_46.jpg
The main character of the series. Pre-reboot, she was a (literal) plus-sized fashion designer, and Kurami's cousin; post-reboot, she's Kurami's mother and works at her aunt's bakery. At times she struggles to deal with her work, her infant daughter, and her cat, but her love for all three keeps her going.

  • Berserk Button: Ana has two: people insulting her parenting skills, and people upsetting Kurami. Even Bree isn't immune from Ana's wrath in the latter case.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: The biggest in the cast.
  • Butt-Monkey: Has shades of this, as caring for Kurami doesn't always go smoothly for her, yet she perseveres regardless.
  • D-Cup Distress: Downplayed. The strip makes an occasional Running Gag out of the fact that she is unable to find bras and swimsuits that fit properly, but generally she doesn't seem to mind her shape.
  • The Fashionista: Pre-reboot, Ana was an unconventional example. She's a lot larger than most fictional fashionistas, but was undeniably passionate about fashion (in one pre-reboot strip, she excitedly rambled on to Bree about the contents of her latest fashion magazine). While she doesn't often dress like a fashionista, it's implied that this is because she struggles to find outfits that fit her (and this may have been what inspired her to want to become a fashion designer in the first place).
    • Downplayed in the reboot, as while she's no longer vocally passionate about fashion, her varied wardrobe shows she still cares about it.
  • Glamorous Single Mother: Averted. Raising Kurami is consistently depicted as tiring and stressful for Ana, but her love for her infant daughter keeps her going.
  • Lethal Chef: In the pre-reboot comic. Memorably, she once burned a cake without even putting it in the oven. Amusingly, it's averted entirely in the reboot, as she now works at a bakery.
  • Mama Bear: In one pre-reboot strip, Bree scares Kurami onto the ceiling as a joke, and Ana goes berserk.
    • This post-reboot strip contains a literal example, although it's more Ana defending her own parenting skills than defending Kurami.
  • Sanity Slippage: The stress of looking after Kurami does occasionally get to Ana, though it rarely lasts for long and is usually Played for Laughs.
  • Sweet Baker: Very, very much so. Just look at the reveal image for Ana-Thing's Possible!
  • Tragic Dropout: In the pre-reboot comic, at least, Ana had to drop out of college (where she was presumably studying fashion design) in order to raise Kurami full-time. It's unknown whether this is also the case in the reboot.

Kurami

The series' title character, Ana's adorable young infant daughter (previously cousin). She speaks exclusively in Baby Language.

  • Baby Language: "Gek gek!" Subverted in that nobody can understand what she's saying.
  • Brainy Baby: Downplayed somewhat in the original, but played straight for laughs in the reboot. Her idea of a bedtime story, for example, is War and Peace, and at one point she's seen randomly reading a book on quantum physics.
  • Idiot Hair: Sports a fairly prominent cowlick that in one strip even pokes through the top of a hat.
  • Informed Flaw: Kurami's blindness in the original strip, which was why it was eventually Ret Conned out.

Bree Kay

Ana's best friend, and an endless bundle of self-confidence.

  • Back for the Finale: Was a major recurring character prior to the reboot, but after that, she didn't appear at all until the last month of the comic's run. Word of God is that she was meant to show up sooner, but Dee simply couldn't think of a way to write her in until it was time to wrap up the series.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: And she knows it.
Bree: I put the "fat" in "infatuation".
  • Big Eater: And how. Once apparently ate at least five pizzas in one sitting, although it did make her sick.
  • Breakout Character: To the extent that some people thought she was the main character, forcing Dee to cut her out of the reboot almost entirely. When the strip was Un-Cancelled, Dee was quick to confirm that Bree would be appearing more often.
  • Height Angst: In one pre-reboot comic, she expresses annoyance that Kurami's stuffed rabbit is taller than her. Given her high confidence level, it comes across as Early Instalment Weirdness.
  • Put on a Bus: She didn't appear in the reboot until the very end.
    • The Bus Came Back: As well as said finale appearance, it's been confirmed that she'll be appearing more often in the revived strip.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her new design for the reboot makes her resemble her mother even more than she already did.
  • Southern Belle: While it didn't become apparent until she gained a Funetik Aksent in September 2015, Word of God is that she's been one the whole time.

Zane

Ana's pet cat, and Kurami's best friend.

Aunt Chicago

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chicago.jpg
Ana's aunt and co-worker, introduced in July 2016.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: On the surface, she's as kind and cheerful as the rest of the main cast, but if you upset her, she's not above putting laxatives in your muffins or even just straight-up suplexing you.
  • Foil: To Ana. While Ana is a Big Beautiful Woman, Chicago is short and slim; her baking style is the complete opposite of Ana's; and while Ana is generally meek and mild, Chicago can and will stand up for herself.
  • Lethal Chef: Subverted; she's actually an excellent baker, but loves to experiment, and those experiments don't always turn out for the best. Her Establishing Character Moment is her standing in the bakery kitchen surrounded by flames, having apparently tried to flambé a cheesecake.
  • Sweet Baker: Downplayed compared to Ana, but she's still a warm person provided you don't get on her bad side.

Martha Kay

Bree's mother, introduced in December 2015.

  • Ms. Exposition: In the pre-reboot strip, she was responsible for the long-awaited reveal of what happened to Kurami's parents, and how Ana came to raise her (and this was within three strips of her debut).
  • Put on a Bus: While her daughter was Demoted to Extra in the reboot, Martha didn't appear at all.
  • Southern Belle: Just like her daughter.
