    Arrah

The heroine of the story. Arrah is the 16-year-old daughter to Oshhe and Arti, a powerful witchdoctor and the current Ka-Priestess respectively. Frustrated by her lack of magic, Arrah struggles to live up to her parents' legacies. When the children of Tamar begin vanishing, Arrah enacts a dangerous ritual to gain the power to find them.

  • Action Girl: Even before she does the ritual, Arrah can kick plenty of ass. She fends off some magically-enpowered bullies with only a staff and the help of her friends. Later, she participates directly in the fight against Efiya's demon army, both with a weapon and her newfound magic abilities.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Treated with disdain by her Aatiri relatives for being half-Mulani and not having magic.
  • Amnesiac God: Arrah is the latest incarnation of the Unnamed orisha, Dimmah. She can only recall her true identity when she dies.
  • Anti-Magic: Possesses an unusual resistance to Arti's magic, which gives Arrah a little wiggle room around the curse.
  • The Archmage: Becomes the only edam and possibly the most powerful witchdoctor in the world.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Spends her whole life wishing for magic. She eventually gets her own magic, but at the cost of her grandma's life and the lives of all the other edam.
  • Big Sister Instinct: When Kofi disappears, Arrah enacts the ritual that will trade away years of her lifespan for magic.
  • Calling the Old Woman Out: Shows her defiance against her mother's curse by speaking up against Arti's plan to resurrect the Demon King.
  • Cast from Lifespan: Sacrifices years of her life for magic so that she can track down whoever is stealing children. She sacrifices even more years in order to break her mother's curse.
  • Childhood Friends: With Rudjek. She'd very much like for it to turn into a Childhood Friend Romance though.
  • Cool Big Sis: Acts as a surrogate older sister to Kofi, a fishmonger's kid that she befriended. She tries to be this to Efiya, but can't overcome Arti's influence or the influence of Efiya's demon blood.
  • Curse: Arti curses Arrah so that Arrah is unable to speak or act against her mother.
  • Daddy's Girl: Adores her father, Oshhe. She loves helping him around his shop and just spending time with him.
  • Determinator: No matter how bad things get and no matter the personal cost, Arrah will continue to fight. Even when she's trapped by Arti's curse, Arrah still tries to find ways to fight back.
  • I Am Who?: Daho, the Demon King, tries to get Arrah to remember her true identity as Dimmah. Arrah refuses to believe it.
  • Spirit Advisor: Gains the abilities and the knowledge of the edam after Efiya kills them. Arrah can hear their voices and know their thoughts.
  • Spoiled Sweet: She's the daughter of a powerful political and religious figure, as well as a renowned witchdoctor. Despite this, Arrah hates using her mother's status to intimidate others and is generally a kind, friendly young woman.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Rudjek. Asides from the fact that she's the daughter of the Ka-Priestess and he's the son of the Vizier, two mortal enemies, there's also the fact that Rudjek has anti-magic and Arrah gains the magic of the edam. They can't even touch for long before both begin to weaken.
  • Tongue-Tied: Can't say anything that might jeopardize her mother's plan. It's difficult for Arrah to even speak in a roundabout way, since the curse can sense her intentions.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Desperately wishes for her mother's approval, who views Arrah as a disappointment for not possessing magic.

    Arti

Arrah's mother and the current Ka-Priestess. Emotionally distant, Arti has never hidden the fact that she finds Arrah a disappointment. She is often away from home, seeing to her duties at the Temple.

  • Abusive Parents: Doesn't even try to hide her contempt of those without magic, including her own daughter. She's a crappy mom to Efiya too, who does actually possess magic.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Dies at the hands of her own daughter, right as she's about to make amends.
  • The Archmage: She would've been chosen as the next Mulani edam if she hadn't left for the Kingdom. As is, she's able to overpower pretty much anyone with ease.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Underwent months of Mind Rape at the hands of Ren-Eke. The only reason that she didn't break was because the Demon King hid a part of her mind from his reach.
  • The Dragon: To the Demon King. She's his primary agent in the mortal world and the driver behind the plan to free him.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Gets more than she bargained for in summoning a demon and creating a half-demon hybrid child.
  • Freudian Excuse: The torture that she went through as a young girl scarred her deeply.
  • Gone Horribly Right: She wanted a child with enough magic to track down the Demon King's ka. Well, she got that in Efiya. Unfortunately, she also got a willful, immature, extremely powerful and unpredictable girl that refused to be controlled.
  • High Priest: Holds the title of Ka-Priestess, the head of religious matters in the Kingdom.
  • Pet the Dog: Places a curse on Arrah instead of killing her, even when doing so would put her plan in danger. Later, Arti protects Arrah from Efiya.
    • She's also affectionate (or as affectionate as she gets, anyways) towards her husband, even after placing him under a curse.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Willing to go to any lengths to get revenge against the Almight One and the Vizier, even if it means summoning demons and freeing the Demon King.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Does this at times.

    Efiya - Major spoilers ahead!

The half-demon hybrid conceived through a ritual. Possessing both the blood of demons and the magic of Heka, Efiya quickly becomes the biggest threat Tamar has seen since the Demon King.

  • A God Am I: Declares herself a goddess and tries to take over the world with a demon army.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Arrah feels pity for her younger sister, who never had a chance of a normal life. It's implied that Efiya feels pain and guilt for killing her parents and trying to kill Arrah.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: Insanely powerful, but has the mentality of a little kid. She doesn't understand such things as morality or responsibility.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Almost literally! She has green eyes and it's also hinted that she's jealous of her older sister. Why else would she pretend to be Arrah and seduce Rudjek?
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Her mother is human and her father is a demon possessing a human body.
  • Younger Than They Look: Thanks to the way time works (or doesn't, in this case) in Kefu, Efiya quickly grows from an infant to a young woman in the matter of days.

    Oshhe

Arrah's father and Arti's husband. Oshhe is a kind, patient man originally hailing from the Aatiri tribe. He left the tribal lands to marry Arti and now resides in Tamar, running a shop.

  • The Archmage: Considered a honorary edam, which are only chosen from the most powerful of witchdoctors.
  • Curse: Put under a powerful curse by Arti. His ka is bound to Arti's, who controls his every action.
  • Dying as Yourself: Regains his mental faculties right before Efiya takes his ka.
  • Good Parents: Arrah has nothing but fond memories of Oshhe. He never treats his daughter as lesser for not having magic and prioritizes her well-being above all else.

    Rudjek

The youngest son of the Vizier and Arrah's childhood friend.

  • A Family Affair: Sleeps with Efiya, who is disguised as Arrah at the time. Rudjek is appalled and horrified when he finds out.
  • Childhood Friends: Met Arrah when they were both children. He shows signs of wanting a Childhood Friend Romance though.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: He's part-craven, which naturally gives him anti-magic and a healing factor.
  • Healing Factor: After he discovers his craven heritage, Rudjek can recover from nigh on anything.
  • Spoiled Sweet: His father is the second-most powerful person in the Kingdom and a huge asshole to boot. Thankfully, Rudjek doesn't take after his dad in personality at all. Rudjek is brash and headstrong, but he's also a easygoing, nice young man.
