An independent military unit composed of Xin and his True Companions. The Fei Xin Unit was formed from the survivors of the Xingyang Campaign following Xin's promotion to 100-Man Commander, and has since proven decisive to Qin's victory in countless campaigns and has taken the heads of numerous renowned generals. Given special privileges in the hopes of becoming one of Qin's key armies in the future, it has shown abilities beyond that of average armies, and currently stands as a 15000-Man Unit.

     General Tropes
  • Badass Army: A highly personalized unit consisting of veterans and elite soldiers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The Fei Xin love to show up at just the right moment to turn the tide. As an independent unit, this is what they are designed for, to put it plainly: to show up where the fight is at its thickest and make the situation advantageous to Qin.
  • Boring, but Practical: The Yu Feng and Le Hua Units are both units of elite noblemen trained to the battlefield from birth. The Fei Xin Unit is composed of ordinary people that left their farms to join the fight. And they're arguably the most effective of the three.
  • Determinator: Despite not having the pedigree of the other special units, the Fei Xin more than makes up for it in sheer guts. Unlike the other elite units that are composed of mainly highly-trained noblemen, every single member of the Fei Xin Unit started as a foot soldier, and climbed their way to the top through sheer skill.
  • Elite Mooks: Besides being this for the Qin military as a whole, the Fei Xin receives elite transfers from other armies that like and respect his way of fighting.
  • Good-Looking Privates: Is subject to this due to their renown at the battlefield, with many of the soldiers gaining wives after the campaigns.
  • Nonindicative Name: They are classified as an 5000-man unit... that is 8000 soldiers strong. Long Guo even lampshades it. This is mainly due to Qiang Lei's refusal to leave them even after being promoted to 3000-Man Commander. High command leaves them be because of how effective they are. The same dynamic persists when Xin is made General and Qiang Lei 5000-Man Commander.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: A majority of the early fighters that started the Fei Xin Unit with Xin were basically a bunch of nobodies. Down the line, the unit gains more powerful recruits that have barely any similarity to one another; making the army a huge mixture of awesomeness. The unit is also the only one shown actively recruiting from the peasantry. It is truly remarkable that a group of untrained commoners like them managed to stand shoulder to shoulder to the children of some of the realm's oldest military families, and, in many cases, outdo them - and not that long after they were formed.
  • Speed, Smarts and Strength: The three main leaders of the unit, Qiang Lei, He Liao Diao, and Xin, mainly fall in line with each trait respectively in battle, though Qiang Lei and Xin possess the other's virtues as well.
  • True Companions: The Fei Xin Unit is all friendly with one another, and will fight to the death for each other, and their commander, Xin, as if they were family. Their cohesion and loyalty to one another is arguably their greatest strength.

The protagonist of the story, Xin is a war orphan who strove to become the world's greatest general alongside his childhood friend Piao in the hopes of escaping slavery. After Piao is fatally wounded while acting as a body double for the current king during a coup, he leads Xin to King Ying Zheng, whom he helps regain the throne and strikes a firm friendship with. Joining the military soon after, Xin rapidly climbs through the ranks through his strength and accomplishments, forming the formidable Fei Xin Unit and playing a key role in Qin's expansion. He's currently the General of a 15000-Man Unit.

  • Abandoned War Child: Lost his parents during one of China's constant wars along with Piao. He went from being a war orphan to a virtual slave when having to serve the Mayor of Chenghu/Jyouto Village.
  • Accidental Kiss: Xin ends up falling on Diao, and they lock lips, much to Duke Biao's amusement.
  • Adaptational Wealth: The historical Xin was the privileged son of a governor, but a From Zero to Hero story is probably more heroic.
  • Almighty Janitor: Despite being a 5000-Man Commander, Lord Changping states his accomplishments and abilities exceeded that of most generals. In fact, Xin's fighting abilities were on a general's level even back when he was a mere foot soldier. This can be seen as a Justified Trope as Xin's lack of strategic ability and youth are strong reasons against promoting him further. No longer the cast now that he has finally been made General.
  • Arch-Enemy: An interesting case where he has two.
    • Pang Nuan: For his murders of Wang Yi, his comrades and soldiers, and Duke Biao, Xin came to truly hate him on a personal level. It is shared, as Pang Nuan came to see Xin as the same type of being as those two. In the climax of the Battle of Zhu Hai Plains, Xin put him down once for all.
    • Li Mu: As Qin's nemesis, he's also one for Xin, who sees him as a mixture of this, of a Worthy Opponent and someone he wants to personally put down. For the longest time, Xin was nothing more than a child for the man, and someone who could become a threat down the line - meaning it wouldn't be a problem to dispose of him at all. However, since the Coalition War, the Siege of Zui and much later the Battle of Zhu Hai Plains, where Xin managed to awaken his unit, fight against legends like Yao Yun and Zhao E Long, defeat Pang Nuan in a duel, and reach the rank of General, Li Mu takes him now extremely seriously and makes killing him a high priority.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: One of the most prominent examples in a series filled with the trope, Xin has gotten promotions based on his martial prowess and the sheer number of generals and commanders slain by his own hands.
  • Badass Normal: He lacks professional and formal training in either combat or warfare, but is still remarkably deadly on the battlefield, having claimed the heads of many powerful opponents. His martial skill is the primary motivation for most of his promotions.
  • Berserk Button: Xin can fly off the handle because of multiple things.
    • Do not kill civilians needlessly in front of him, he doesn't care if you're an enemy or an allied commander with a higher position on his own side, he will cut you down without mercy. Deconstructed in the Heiyang arc; despite having had his button pressed by the Huan Yi Army until he snapped, there was nothing he could do then, and his fury only damaged his position: Xin's confrontation with Huan Yi ended up costing him his promotion.
    • Pang Nuan is one for him. The Wushen earned Xin's ire because of his murder of Wang Yi, Duke Biao, and several of his own men, Qu Hai included. Sending Qiang Lei flying after defeating her and severely hurting her didn't help either.
    • Played for laughs with Wang Ben. Anytime Wang Ben does something great in battle or reaches a personal milestone, Xin will get angry or extremely annoyed. case in point
  • Beyond the Impossible: After fifteen days of grueling fights, Xin defeated Pang Nuan while being literally half-dead.
  • Big Fancy House: Subverted. He and He Liao Diao expect one of these after supporting Zheng in retaking his throne but is met instead by a dilapidated shack, though he personally doesn't mind as he grew up a slave without property of his own.
    • Upgrades to one of these in full after the initial Zhao invasion.
  • Book Dumb: Justified. Growing up as a war orphan meant he was never educated in such matters.
  • Chaste Hero: Played With. He gets flustered when the topic of romance is brought up but wouldn't mind "climbing the mountain" with Qiang Lei if she offers. There is more than a little Ship Tease between them to confirm this.
  • Determinator: The greatest example of the manga. He's greatly determined to one day become a Great General of Qin and will go to any length to kill any noteworthy enemy to reach it. His tenacity is capable of bringing even the likes of Pang Nuan into a standstill. The greatest example of this is the Siege of Zui: Xin held the southern wall, the worst battlefield in the city, to the very end. Odds, numbers, provisions, as long as Xin is concerned, all this be damned - if he has to do something, he will do it. Xin is as stubborn as a mule.
  • Four-Star Badass: Wants to become one, but compared to his superiors, he has a long way to go. The story revolves around his journey to achieve this.
  • Freudian Trio: With Meng Tian and Wang Ben. Being a Hot-Blooded Idiot Hero firmly cements him as the Id.
  • Gut Feeling: Xin is developing into an instinctual general, who can read the ebb and flow of battle without formal tactics and structural thinking. Greatly showcased during the Battle of Zhu Hai Plains, when he takes over with tactics similar to those Duke Biao used to great effect (at least for a while).
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Subverted; he started out with swords, but eventually took up glaives after he inherited Wang Yi's glaive, though he still keeps Piao's sword with him as a sidearm.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Has a near-endless supply of this and can even share it with others. Any time he is beaten to exhaustion he finds strength to get back stronger than before.
  • Historical Domain Character: He's based on a well-known Qin general of the warring states era.
  • Hot-Blooded: Tends to yell and argue with others. Has drawn his blade towards superiors more than once.
  • Idiot Hero: Was called his home village's number two/one idiot during his time as a servant to the landowner. Even after maturity and considerable war experience, Xin's strategic abilities are lacking to the point the unit was on the verge of collapse before He Liao Diao joined as the team strategist. Justified as he never received the military education that helped the likes of Wang Ben and Meng Tian (or even Diao, for the matter); and even if he had, it probably wouldn't be put to use much, as he's an instinctual general rather than a strategic one.
    • It takes him a year, 29 volumes, before his charisma/leadership capability finally surpasses his old friend. His intelligence is still below par by standards of the series.
  • The Leader: Of the entire Fei Xin Unit as a 5,000-Man Commander (and then as a General). Can be seen as this in his Freudian Trio combination with Wang Ben and Meng Tian, at times.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Deconstructed Trope. After Qiang Lei leaves the unit, his gung-ho battle behavior leads to a series of defeats. He was on the verge of getting demoted if not for Meng Tian's intervention and Diao becoming his strategist.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Zheng, of all people. A couple of important characters realize how important Xin is to Zheng. It's Chengjiao who put it best.
Chengjiao: Though you may serve Zheng as his "sword", do not forget that you're also his "shield." I am sure that in the future, your existence itself will become a support for him...
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Does not realize Diao is female. Until he performs a Crotch-Grab Sex Check on her.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Sees this for Li Mu, which is why he becomes worried when it's said that Li Mu will soon be executed.
  • Only One Name: Justified as he was a former war orphan turned slave, so possessing a family name would be the oddity rather than the norm in the period.
    • Subverted after the Battle of Zhu Hai Plains, where he decided upon the name "Li" which was used by Piao before his death. It's actually the name of the historical Qin general he's based on.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Downplayed, as Xin isn't small, it's his opponents that are huge.
  • Passed-Over Promotion: Is subject to this after assaulting and having Qiang Lei nearly kill Huan Yi for his atrocities.
  • Rousing Speech: Is prone to these throughout the story which raises morale within the Fei Xin Unit to its apex every time.
  • Screaming Warrior: Whether he fights or is giving orders, Xin will shout a lot.
  • Ship Tease: With Qiang Lei. He has a number of moments together, especially whenever they are alone and blushes heavily whenever he sees how pretty she is. Chapter 768 fully cements his affections for her when he asks her to marry him upon the unification of China is over.
  • Signature Laugh: "Ka ka ka ka!"
  • Sketchy Successor: Accused of this by Yao Yun, who thinks Xin didn't deserve to inherit Wang Yi's glaive. Later in their duel, Xin proves him wrong.
  • Spanner in the Works: Every time an enemy army thinks they have an upper hand, Xin just so happens to be in the best spot to turn the situation into a victory for Qin.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: Despite the series being a Seinen, Xin is a textbook example. He's a Hot-Blooded Idiot Hero who starts out as Unskilled, but Strong and goes through Training from Hell To Be a Master.
  • Taught by Experience: His swordsmanship is self-taught, with well over a thousand sparring matches against Piao supplementing firsthand battlefield experience.
  • To Be a Master: His goal is to surpass everyone and become the greatest general under the heavens.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Just about every battle has him taking at least one. It's one of the key aspects of the series.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Piao's sword, Wang Yi's glaive, Lun Hu's sword, and Duke Biao's shield. Xin has a knack for collecting these.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: What he lacks in technique compared to Meng Tian and Wang Ben he makes up for in brute strength. This applies to his warfare as well - Xin's lack of tactical understanding means his unit relies on his sheer destructive ability more than his rivals until he begins using his instincts for tactical maneuvers during the Battle of Zhu Hai Plains. And boy, is it effective.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Lord Changping has dubbed him the most valuable piece to obtain. Xin doesn't know his value but he is more focused on becoming a general. Fortunately, Lord Changping defects to Zheng's faction before he can make use of either him or Diao.
    • He becomes this for Huan Yi in Heiyang, who intentionally leaves him in an irresistibly vulnerable position to lure Qing She from his unbreakable web.
  • Up Through the Ranks: Starts off as a lowly soldier, but after his first campaign is instantly promoted to 100-Man Commander due to his actions significantly influencing the battle as a whole.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Wang Ben. Subverted at first, with how hostile Wang Ben was to him. Played straight later on, they still love to hate each other, but when they work together, they're unstoppable.

Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa (Japanese), Francesca Monet Calo (season 3) (English), Amandine Longeac (French)

The heir of the legendary Chiyou assassin clan. With her special sword named Lu Sui, Qiang Lei is out to get revenge on the assassin from said clan who killed her sister, Xiang. Her special ability allows her to harbor a 'war god' by doing a 'priestess dance' that draws the war god's power into her. Further down the line, she decides to help Xin and the Fei Xin Unit by becoming a Great General herself, and serves as one of the unit's lieutenants. She's currently the commander of her own 3,000-man unit that fights with the Fei Xin Unit for a grand total of 8,000 soldiers. She is later promoted to 5000-Man Commander after Xin has made General.

Stats: Strength |94+a| note , Leadership |80|, Knowledge |87|, Weakness: Low stamina.
Stats (Qin Invasion): Strength |95+a|, Leadership |80|, Knowledge |87|, Weakness: Low stamina.

  • Almighty Janitor: She's actually stronger than Xin and has superior strategic abilities. In fact, going by stats she is currently the strongest combatant in Qin besides Meng Wu, and that is without counting her Alpha stat.
    • Her general abilities are no less than Xin's, Wang Ben's, and Meng Tian's, but she chooses to remain Xin's subordinate despite stating her intention to become a great general as well, in a similar relationship Teng had with Wang Yi (complete with possible romantic subtext).
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She always had a cool and aloof aura around her.
  • Badass Adorable: A beautiful woman no matter how much she fights.
  • Big Eater: Her appetite won't lose to the guys.
  • Cast from Lifespan: Her qi skills allows to give energy to another person, but it comes with risks. She performs a Heroic Sacrifice to rescue Xin from Afterlife Antechamber, but spirits of Xin's officers reduced the cost to half of her lifespan and some abilities.
  • Cool Sword: Her unique named sword Lu Sui, meaning “Green Tassel”. Like all Chiyou she treats it as a companion and converses with it.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Always kept to herself and disliked talking to others but after a talk with Xin and Diao she warms up a bit.
  • Gender Flip: Was presumably historically a man.
  • Gender Reveal: Reveals herself to be a woman later in the story.
  • Glass Cannon: Is ultimately one of the strongest fighters when battling in bursts, but is shown to be less capable of taking hits than other generals.
  • Heroic RRoD: Her Priestess Dance drains her heavily, and extended use is both physically draining as well as potentially fatal.
    • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: She goes beyond the limit of her Priestess Dance to defeat You Lian in an attempt to pull this, but memories of the Fei Xin Unit pull her back.
  • Lady of War: Kills and fights just as good as anyone.
  • The Lancer: Is essentially Xin's Number Two.
  • The Leader: As a 3,000-Man and later 5000-Man Commander that fights alongside the Fei Xin Unit.
  • Little Miss Badass: Despite being one of the shorter fighters, she's still one of the greatest fighters in the story.
  • Miss Conception: She thinks that climbing a mountain with a strong guy will cause something to explode, resulting in a baby.
  • One-Woman Army: Similar to Pang Nuan, she has achieved a level of martial skill where she can match an army single handed, something which Lord Changping considers defies the concept of an army itself. In Shanyang, she single-handedly kills five hundred heavy cavalry, albeit at nearly the cost of her own life.
  • Put on a Bus: After the Wei invasion campaign, she leaves in search of her sister's killer.
  • Revenge: Out to get her sister's killer. She eventually succeeds some time around the Qin invasion.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Believed to be a boy. Turns out to be a girl.
  • Ship Tease: She sometimes makes subtle jokes to Xin. She admits it was Love at First Sight, but since Chiyou can't have partners, it took her a few years to realize it. She even admits she would want to bare his child in the future but was embarrassed after learning how children are made and couldn't see him for a while. Chapter 768 has Xin even asking her to marry him once the unification of China was done. She doesn't have an answer for him, but it's clear she very much wants to say yes but is too scared to answer.
  • The Smurfette Principle: For the Fei Xin Unit initially, and still is in her own unit.
  • The Strategist: Is revealed to have been this for the Fei Xin force and they face failure after failure after she leaves, because calling Xin a terrible strategist would be an understatement.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: Her original appearance when Xin first meets her is quite manly.
  • Thanks for the Mammaries: How Xin found out she was a girl.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Twice.
    • She initially believes Pang Nuan to be stronger than Wang Yi as she is unaware of the concept of a general's weight. She is shocked at the full extent of Wang Yi's might.
    • Because she was more talented than You Lian in her youth, she underestimated her, not expecting her to have mastered the priestess dance far beyond her level.
  • Verbal Tic: Has a tendency to end her sentences with "probably", or "I think" despite being completely right on the mark every time.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: She has an extremely short stamina and when that runs out, she is all but taken out of the current fight until she's finished what amounts to napping.
    • Her Praetorian Guard is built around countering this deficiency, being made of burly men who can take a beating while she quickly recovers through meditation.

He Liao Diao is the last descendant of a mountain tribe who chanced upon Xin and Zheng as they were fleeing from Chengjiao's forces. After they defeat the coup, He Liao Diao lives with Xin before enlisting into Lord Changping's strategist academy and eventually becoming the Fei Xin Unit's strategist.

Stats (Qin Invasion War): Strength |60|, Leadership |85|, Knowledge |88| Cooking |99!|

  • Accidental Kiss: Xin ends up falling on her, and they lock lips.
  • Achilles' Heel: She has trouble reading commanders who rely on instinct like Yao Yun.
  • Blow Gun: Her choice of weapon after taking it from Muta.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Initially when hiding her gender, but later grows it out.
  • The Chains of Commanding: With more men under Xin, she has increasingly harder time to arrange their movements and often stresses herself. She also guilt-trips herself about larger casualties, though she manages to pull it together quickly.
  • Cool Mask: Used to wear one as a kid and occasionally during her first years in the Fei Xin Unit, but it slowly fell into disuse as time went on. It's more like a hood now.
  • Damsel in Distress: Is subject to this during the Zhuyong Campaign when Xun Zao/Jun Sou captures her upon realizing her as a threat. Her overall composure during capture, however, impresseses Kai Meng, and she is eventually returned for Xun Zao during a parley.
  • Fatal Flaw: She is said to be poor at fortifications, being one of Lord Changping's lowest ranking students involving structural defenses.
  • Gender Reveal: Diao was believed to be a boy in the early stages of the story.
  • Last of His Kind: Is one of the only, if not the sole, survivor of a tribe hailing to the west.
  • The Load: Her initial status before learning strategy and tactics from Lord Changping.
  • Non-Action Guy: Besides using blow darts as a kid, she can't fight at all, which is obviously a problem whenever the fighting gets close.
  • Off to Boarding School: Takes Qiang Lei's place at Lord Changping's academy to learn strategy and separates from Xin for a time, though she occasionally visited and ultimately left after joining the Fei Xin Unit.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Is vastly taller and developed upon joining the Fei Xin Unit, though Xin still fails to recognize she's a female.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She was the only female of the group before Qiang Lei.
  • The Strategist: Is the Fei Xin Unit's strategist, and extremely capable for her age.
  • Straw Vulcan: Instinctual generals appear to be her more alarming weakness as they do not use logic or strategy in their tactics; Xin does a much better job at countering them than her.
  • Supreme Chef: Her stats confirm it!
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: Masquerades as a boy when accompanying Xin, Ying Zheng, and their ragtag group. While others such as Bi find out soon after, Xin doesn't discover it until four years later down the line - even requiring a... definitive answer to confirm this - much to his shock.
  • Tagalong Kid: As a child. Especially apparent when she basically follows Xin to deal with Lu Buwei's assassins, despite being in no real position to contribute anything.
  • Team Mom: Besides being a strategist, she is also in charge of the unit's provisions.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Goes from being a street-smart kid embarrassed about her own gender, to a far more mature and capable strategist.

  • Nice Guy: Easily one of the nicest people in the story.
  • Number Three: He will always serve as one of Xin's most trusted officers.
  • The Reliable One: It is because of this he is chosen to lead the Fei Xin Unit across a dangerous river despite his lack of outstanding qualities. More specifically, Diao and Xin site that his greatest trait is his "sense of responsibility", since he's been with the Fei Xin Unit for so long, and has served directly under Xin himself the longest out of anyone in the unit, he'd put in the most effort out of anyone in a situation where everyone else, Xin especially, is counting on him to deliver.
  • Older Sidekick: To Xin.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Starts off as a normal soldier that was tasked to simply look after Xin, but then becomes one of the primary lieutenants within the Fei Xin Unit after he supports Xin in subjugating the lawless region.

  • Chick Magnet: Is shown to be this much to his embarrassment.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: One through his left eye.

  • Jack of All Trades : He's decent at several fields, be it at close combat, battle tactics, frontline leadership, and others while not being the best at any one of them among the Fei Xin Unit. Xin often moves him wherever they need extra help for this reason.
  • The Leader: Of the Guo Bei Troops within the Fei Xin Unit.
  • Out of Focus: Outside his introduction, he's had the least amount of noteworthy appearances amongst those that lead the Fei Xin Unit.

  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has quite a few on his face.
