Future Foundation:

     Takumi Hijirihara

Takumi Hijirihara / Killer Killer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drgkk_takumi_hijirihara.png
"Things like murderers, these types of odd crimes... from the bottom of my heart, I love them more than anything."
The series main protagonist, a lazy, unmotivated investigator with a habit of sleeping in odd places who is partnered with Asano. He was the Sole Survivor of a massacre in middle school, which led to him developing an insane obsession with murder. To this effect, he grades culprits before murdering them himself under the alias of "Killer Killer".
  • Anti-Hero: About as anti as you can get, being an immoral killer who takes his obsession out on other murderers.
  • Ax-Crazy: Played with. He's got a frightening obsession with murder, but to his co-workers that doesn't show at all.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Ordinary morality does not in any way matter to Hijirihara. He happily kills, but feels insulted by culprits who have no regard for human life.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: A proud Hikikomori, but he's actually shown to be pretty intelligent when pressed.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: An eccentric, sleepy, and lazy young man who also happens to be one of Future Foundation's special case investigators. His co-workers admits his work ethic is abhorrent, but he's so good at his job that he can get away with it. Not to mention the whole Serial-Killer Killer thing.
  • Catchphrase: "This is how you do... a real [murder]", said before finishing off his victims.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: His Establishing Character Moment is him sleeping in Asano's locker, he has a habit of feeling up corpses, and falling in love is apparently so stressful for him that he suffers a heart attack. This is without getting into his attitude about murder...
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: About as contrasting as one can get, being a lazy, conceited young man who doubles as murderous psychopath Anti-Hero.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He might not look like it, but Hijirihara is frighteningly skilled in battle, to the point of being able to fight Chikatilo with his eyes closed.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Was caught up in a massacre during middle school and only survived because he hid in a closet. The incident had an… interesting effect on him.
  • Hikikomori: He's a shut-in who we first meet sleeping in a locker, and has a habit of doing so in other small, dark spaces.
  • Idiot Hair: Sixth main character in the franchise to sport one.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: It was the way the mass murderer slaughtered his classmates during the Giboura school killing spree that caused Hijirihara to see killing as an art. In fact, it was the primary reason for his crush on Mukuro.
    • He is deeply offended by the army of Mukuro clones not only because he sees them as cheap imitations, but in his eyes, their killings miss the love and passion the real Mukuro projected.
  • Invincible Hero: Effortlessly kills every serial killer he meets. The only opponent to give him trouble is Fujigawa, but that's partially because of a time-limit.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Implied. While he won't kill Asano to deactivate the bombs, he does promise to eventually kill her as his great "passion killing".
  • Mistaken Identity: Investigators seem to believe both him and Fujigawa are the same person as Killer Killer.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The author has said Hijirihara was based on Pedro Rodrigues Filho, a real-life Serial-Killer Killer.
  • One Degree of Separation: That murderer he's obsessed with? It's Mukuro Ikusaba.
  • Poetic Serial Killer: His victims die in over-the-top, exaggerated versions of how they killed their own victims.
  • Serial-Killer Killer: His shtick in a nutshell.
  • Serious Business: Murder, to the point where he offs those who don't put enough passion into their kills.
  • Ship Tease: With Asano—she seems unusually quick to interpret his actions in Chapter 7 as a sign of him having a crush on her, as well as quite fond of the idea. Chapter 11 amps it up by having him promise to kill her in a "passion killing", then downright confirms it by him calling running away with Asano at the end a "super lover's suicide".
  • Slasher Smile: A downright terrifying one when he kills people. It even mimics Monokuma in expression at one point.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He bares a striking resemblance to one of Hajime Hinata's beta designs.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He was a fairly normal child before he witnessed Mukuro Ikusaba committing mass murder.
  • Younger Than They Look: Was in middle school during Danganronpa 3 - Side:Despair episode 5, implying he is about Komaru's age.

     Misaki Asano

Misaki Asano

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/misaki_asano.png

The series heroine, a newcomer to the 6th Branch who is partnered with Hijirihara.

  • Apocalypse Maiden: Downplayed, but Shuuji attached the remote for the hundreds of bombs scattered across cities around her neck as a pendant. The only way to remove it is to kill her. If she doesn't die, they'll all go off.
  • Break the Cutie: Between learning Hijirihara is one of the Killer Killers, being stabbed, and learning that thousands of people will die if she doesn't, she breaks down in Chapter 11 and begs Hijirihara to kill her.
  • Broken Tears: After spending two chapters denying it, she sees undeniable proof that Hijirihara is Killer Killer. The result is these.
  • Driven to Suicide: Her Trauma Conga Line leads her to beg Hijirihara to kill her. After thinking he refused, she tries to do the job herself but it's stopped by him.
  • Fangirl: Chapter 6 reveals she's one to Kirigiri.
  • Go-Getter Girl: Hard-working, sweet, and with a determined attitude to make the world a better place.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Thus far, it seems she's the only major character unaware that Hijirihara and Killer Killer are one and the same. Though as of Chapter 8, she's been clued in.
  • Morality Pet: For Hijirihara. He genuinely has a soft spot for her, and goes out of his way to protect her from both getting hurt and from the truth of his identity as Killer Killer several times.
  • Nice Girl: Despite being frustrated by Hijirihara in the first chapter, she did put effort into understanding him, and generally has a sweet and bubbly personality.
  • Off with Her Head!: Takumi decapitates her to remove a Bomb Collar. She gets better.
  • Only Sane Man: For the most part.
  • Ship Tease: With Hijirihara—she seems unusually quick to interpret his actions in Chapter 7 as a sign of him having a crush on her, as well as quite fond of the idea. Chapter 11 amps it up by having him promise to kill her in a "passion killing".
  • Younger Than They Look: Says in the first chapter that she was about the same age as the Gibo-ura victims, placing her in the same age as Hijirihara and Fujigawa.

     Mekuru Katsuragi

Mekuru Katsuragi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mekuru.png

A junior investigator always seen wearing a jacket. In spite of her age, she's highly skilled. Has a history with Hijirihara.

     Ikue Dogami

Ikue Dogami

The 6th branch's Special Case Bureau Section Chief.

     Juzo Sakakura

Juzo Sakakura

Head of the 6th branch. See here for tropes relating to him in Danganronpa 3.

  • Bad Boss: He leads the 6th branch through fear and intimidation. Case in point, he kidnaps Hijirihara's friends just so he can use them for bait. Then when Hijirihara actually arrives, he beats the shit out of him and prepares to beat him up in front of a crowd. A bit later on, when Hijirihara confronts Tsuruhashi over his murder of the Secretary of Defense with the intent of framing Sakakura, Tsuruhashi says he did it because of how Sakakura's treated him. Subverted on the first point, Chapter 6 reveals that Sakakura was trying to gain confirmation that Hijirihara was Killer Killer and was working with Mekuru to do so. Once he does so, Sakakura actually keeps Hijirihara around on the basis that Hijirihara is on their side.

     Kyosuke Munakata

Kyosuke Munakata

The head of the 2nd branch and vice-chairman of the Future Foundation. See here for tropes relating to him in Danganronpa 3.

Serial Killers:

    Momomichi Ito

Momomichi Ito

  • Faux Affably Evil: He seems like a very friendly, sociable person, but once Takumi identifies him as a killer, he shows his true colors.
  • The Power of Blood: He believes that drinking human blood will let him stay young forever.

    Rei Shimizu

Rei Shimizu

  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She seems to be this initially.
  • Deadly Doctor: She is a doctor who kills her patients and grows parasites in them.
  • Fan Disservice: Once Rei takes off the top of her nurse uniform, there's a prominent view of her breasts with parasites crawling all over them.
  • Hospital Hottie: She is so beautiful that Takumi passes out from Love at First Sight upon meeting her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: While calling her parasites cute implies she cares for them, it turns out to be morbid fetishism as her Lack of Empathy towards one of them being stabbed proves.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She is obsessed with her parasites to a crazy level.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What exactly did her parasites do to her patients in the entire year they spent inside them, and were the patients suffering due to this?
  • The Symbiote: She views all parasites like this, inserting them into her patients and herself in order to help them grow. The chapter she appears in is also called "Symbiotic Hospital."

    Eiichiro Saiyama

Eiichiro Saiyama

  • Glory Seeker: He has a massive complex for being praised. The first time anyone praised his work was when he was in elementary school. Until he became a Mangaka at age 32, nobody else had ever praised him.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He's impaled by his own giant pen.
  • Jack the Ripoff: Many of his victims are arranged similarly to the victims of the Killing School Life. One is crucified by ropes like Chihiro, another had a knife in their stomach and lay slumped on the floor like Sayaka. Takumi ends up killing him by impaling him with his own giant pen, similarly to how Mukuro was killed.

    Ted Chikatilo

Ted Chikatilo

Former Ultimate Pyrotechnic

  • Grenade Tag: Chapter 3 starts with him seemingly having killed multiple Future Foundation agents and finishing by ramming a bomb down his last victim's throat and tossing them into the air like a live firecracker.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: His name seems to be a combination of the names of serial killers Ted Bundy and Andrei Chikatilo
  • Rain of Blood: Ted lays down to enjoy the one he creates after the bomb he sets off explodes like "beautiful fireworks" (as he calls it).
  • Sadist

    Shuuji Fujigawa

Shuuji Fujigawa / Killer Killer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fujigawaprofile.jpg

Takumi Hijirihara's best friend, and the only other survivor of the Giboura Middle School massacre. He is also a Killer Killer, but one with completely different motivations.

  • Affably Evil: He is a very polite young man who wants to exterminate the entire human race.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: He chooses to kill himself via explosion rather than let Takumi kill him.
  • Big Bad: His plan to Kill All Humans drives the story and makes him the biggest enemy of Takumi, his best friend.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Holds this belief that everyone has the potential to be a murderer, and that anyone could at any moment.
  • Hypocrite: He talks about how horrible murder is and how much he hates killing, all while brutally butchering people.
  • Idiot Hair: Sports one of the most ridiculous seen in the franchise yet, being an arched crescent that spreads over his head.
  • Knight Templar: Wants to rid the world of murder by murdering all murderers (except Hijirihara). In addition, he tried to show Hijirihara how awful killing really is by nearly killing Asano to see if he'd react. Chapter 11 reveals he's even more extreme: he wants to kill all of humanity to get rid of all potential murderers.
  • Mistaken Identity: Investigators seem to believe both him and Hijirihara are the same person as Killer Killer.
  • My Greatest Failure: How he views his failure to prevent Hijirihara from becoming Killer Killer.
  • Serial-Killer Killer: He even held the title before getting it mixed with Hijirihara.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Chapter 6 spells his name consistently as Fujikawa, 7 alternates Fujikawa and Fujigawa, and 8 onwards consistently uses Fujigawa.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Sports a very clean head of white hair and a filthy record of serial murder.
  • Younger Than They Look: Was in middle school during Danganronpa 3 - Side:Despair episode 5, implying he is about Komaru's age.
