    Takumi Inui

Takumi Inui/Kamen Rider Faiz/Wolf Orphnoch/Kamen Rider Next Faiz

Portrayed by: Kento Handa (live), Seiji Takaiwa (suit)

Characters in Kamen Rider 555
WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS
A snarky delinquent whom Mari came across by chance while chased by Orphnochs. He becomes the primary user of the Faiz Gear, and the one best-suited to using its multiple functions.

Tropes that apply to him in general

  • The Aloner: At first he doesn't enjoy Mari and Keitaro, preferring to act alone. Over time, he starts to accept their company and appreciate his friends.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: His haircut is a style commonly referred to as a wolf cut. Which makes it an excellent portent of Takumi's Wolf Orphnoch form.
  • Blood Knight: Mild example, he grew to enjoy being Faiz.
  • Boomerang Bigot: He had a time of wanting to kill all Orphnochs despite being one himself. This can be justified, every Orphnoch he met has either killed everyone around him, or was in their human form the entire time. Not to mention the fact that he hated his Orphnoch transformation due to misunderstandings.
  • Breakout Character: Of the early Heisei Riders, Takumi is by far one of the most prominent and would make several complete returns (meaning not just suit or voice only but Kento Handa returning in a major capacity) down the line. He played a major role in Kamen Rider Taisen, a big supporting role in Super Hero Taisen GP and was the Decoy Protagonist of Kamen Rider 4, despite it being a special based off Kamen Rider Drive. He also goes on to appear in Zi-O and is the first Heisei Phase 1 Rider to have an anniversary special. He also constantly ranks in the top 5 Riders of any era on official polls.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: Refused to have anything to do with the Mari in the beginning, but after several unintended encounters with Orphnochs and the belt being stolen and used by someone else, he finally decides to assume the role of Faiz after seeing just how important that duty was, swearing to prevent it from being stolen.
  • Catchphrase: Not in the series, but his speech showing just how serious he is about protecting people has become iconic to him, having him declare it in many crossovers and game appearances.
I don't have dreams. But you know, I can protect them.
  • Character Tic: His wrist flick, which he uses to either taunt opponents, start a battle or signal that he's about to do something awesome. He also kneels before every kick finishernote , and only uses Flying Side Kicks (The iconic Rider Kick style) for his kick finishers. These allow the viewers to know that it's Takumi wearing the suit and not anyone else.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: The first major example in the franchise. While Yusuke, Shoichi (the previous Rider protagonist made by Toshiki Inoue) and Shinji are all traditionally heroic types, Takumi is an abrasive Ineffectual Loner and Jerk with a Heart of Gold who even briefly turns to the dark side at one point.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He even says it in his nature to be sarcastic.
  • Deal with the Devil: He joins Lucky Clover to get Smart Brain to save Mari.
  • Death Seeker:
    • When he was tricked into thinking he attacked the Ryusei School reunion, he actively tries to get Kiba to kill him.
    • Played straight in the alternate continuity, Kamen Rider Taisen, where due to not being able to save Kusaka and his friends, he wonders if he deserves to live.
    • Completely inverted in Kamen Rider Yongou, where he ACTUALLY died during his series' ending. Due to being revived again, he wants some way to have everyone live, thus creating the time loops. In the end, even if he doesn't want to die again, Takumi destroys the time alteration machine.
    • In Paradise Regained, he's ashamed of having been revived by Smart Brain and briefly turns on his old friends in the hopes of being killed. When Mari is transformed into the Wildcat Orphnoch though, this mindset changes.
  • Defrosting Ice King: At the beginning of the series, he was as rude as possible and tried to distance himself from Mari and Keitaro, only living at Keitaro's house as he was forced too. As the series goes on, he's noticeably less aggressive and more involved with his friends.
  • Face Death with Dignity: He knows that his day as an Orphnoch is numbered, but he's content with making full use of his remaining life. Reminding Kiba about this led to his decision to pull a Redemption Equals Death.
  • Face–Heel Turn: He's done this at least three times. In fact he is the first main rider to have fallen from grace (albeit temporarily), followed by Tsukasa Kadoya and Aruto Hiden.
    • During the show, Takumi has a Heroic BSoD after Mari is briefly killed. In desperation, he joins the Lucky Clover (and by extension, Smart Brain) in the hopes the company will honor their bargain and revive her; seemingly turning on Yuji. The company does follow through on their promise, but Takumi's simply too kind-hearted to really do their dirty work and he eventually comes to his senses.
    • The Alternate Timeline of Kamen Rider Yongou was caused by Takumi's will to live influencing the second iteration of the History Modifying Machine and enabling more time-loops. He has to be convinced by Kamen Rider X to actually destroy it and accept death.
    • Paradise Regained sees Faiz working for Smart Brain for reasons unknown to his friends. He was revived by the company before he could properly die and he's hoping to be destroyed; prevented thanks to Rena's injections.
  • Fake Memories: In the movie, he sustained a head injury that lead to him becoming amnesiac, so the former Smart Brain scientist who saved him, renamed him Takeshi and gave him false memories in hoping he could take care of Mina.
  • Female Feline, Male Mutt: In Paradise Regained he serves as the Male Mutt to Mari's Female Feline, his Wolf Orphnoch form contrasting with her Wildcat Orphnoch.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Takumi has a documented history of going rogue when his worldview is defied, people he knows are hurt or his mortality is threatened, more often than not the latter. He tries to join the Lucky Clover during the TV show when his Orphnoch nature is made public and Mari is briefly killed. In Paradise Regained, he starts off working for Smart Brain in the hopes it will get him killed in a Suicide by Cop, despite Rena's life-extending injections. Even the Kamen Rider Yongou incident was caused by him indirectly; his Mortality Phobia influencing the time-loops created by the History Modifying Machine. None of these moments really take and he remains a hero despite these lapses in judgement.
Naoya: We're here for you, Mari! And you too, Mr. "Who Knows What Freakin' Side I'm On" Inui!
  • Heel–Face Turn: After he finally get over from his own crisis, he resolves to become the main wearer of the Faiz Gear once again and returns to his allies for good.
  • The Hero Dies: Not in the main series, but it's heavily implied at the end that Takumi's days are highly numbered as a result of his Orphnoch body breaking down. Though he's content with what he has learned, what's valuable in life isn't its length, but what's inside it, something he explained to Kiba to get him back to his senses. The Kamen Rider 4 miniseries implied that he passes away sometime after the final episode, but the events of Paradise Regained finally subverts this, as he was given enough therapy after he secretly sided with the re-emerged Smart Brain at the moment he was picked up upon his near death prior to the events of the movie.
  • Heroic BSoD: Twice, once when he is rescued by Yuka. After he finds out that she is an Orphnoch, he questions if other Orphnoch aren't complete monsters, making him unable to fight. He gets over it, as he realizes that he should only attack those attacking humans. The second time is when he couldn't protect Mari from Sawada, causing her death. This is only further enforced when he is forced to transform in front of his friends and have them be scared of him for a few episodes. It got worse again when he was tricked into thinking he attacked the Ryusei School reunion, causing him to be a Death Seeker. Then, it happened a third time in Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai via Retcon to have Kusaka die in Takumi's arms, leading to him suffering a ten year BSOD that ends up getting snapped out with thanks to Kensuke Jin, Kamen Rider X.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Played Literally. Takumi himself is the Wolf Orphnoch.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: It is later revealed he acts the way he does because he is scared of himself and attempts to isolate himself from people so he can't hurt them.
  • Hot Food Hurts: Mari calls him "nekojita" (lit. cat-tongue) due to his inability to eat hot food; he tends to blow on food before eating it to do so.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Takumi is actually the wolf Orphnoch.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Tries several times to get away from Mari and the rest throughout the first arcs and throughout the series out of both being very antisocial and due to a misguided sense of protecting others, but it doesn't work. As it turns out, this is because he was afraid of hurting people and himself when their relationship inevitably ends.
  • The Kirk: He's not too keen on friendship as his friends are, but he tries to be the mediator to his more stoic and emotional friends.
  • Leitmotif: "Double Standard", which describes his situation before the series and thanks to Mari, how much it's changed since he now has something to live for.
  • Meaningful Name: "Inui" contains the character for "dog" (Takumi is the Wolf Orphnoch.)
  • Mortality Phobia: Zig-Zagged. A Recurring Element with Takumi throughout the franchise, not just 555, is his paradoxical view of death: Takumi flip-flops between scattered Face Heel turns for the sake of being destroyed only to be talked down and/or regaining his senses and instances where he comes to terms with Living on Borrowed Time; even becoming disillusioned with the idea of self-sacrifice in the Alternate Timeline of Kamen Rider Yongou. Paradise Regained outright makes this indecision a plot-point: Smart Brain brings him back to life and he joins them, once more taking on a psuedo-suicidal streak by accepting their life-extending injections while secretly hoping he gets killed, declaring that Orphnochs have no future. Mari is then kidnapped by Smart Brain and forcibly transformed into the Wildcat Orphnoch, causing Takumi to switch stances again and espouse on the value of life and holding on to optimism. He's called out on his hypocrisy and he's forced to finally acknowledge his feelings and come to terms. His answer? Don't worry about it.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: He's the Wolf Orphnoch, who died as a human and came back as a wolf man, with all the power that comes with it.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Gets together with Mari by the end of ''Paradise Regained.
  • Running Gag: Despite his Animal Motif being canines, he is called a Nekojita (Cat-Tongue) by Mari as he has trouble eating hot food.
  • The Slacker: He notes he has no dream and just wants to travel around. After ten episodes worth of Character Development, he takes this slacker attitude in a very positive direction.
Takumi: You know, I don't have dreams. But I can protect the dreams of others.
  • The Snark Knight: Very heavily. He's very apathetic towards everyone on the surface, but he's afraid of becoming close to people. When the time comes, despite his cynicism, he'll always do what he thinks is right.
  • Tsundere: A good case can be made for him. He is pretty snarky to everyone, but it's only a facade to hide a Hidden Heart of Gold because he's scared of hurting people. He grows nicer to his friends as the series goes on.
  • Wolf Man: A humanoid wolf as the Wolf Orphnoch.
  • Vocal Evolution: His voice gets deeper with each returning appearance after the series due to his actor ageing, with his performance in Paradise Regained sounding completely different from the series.

Tropes exclusive to him as Kamen Rider Faiz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krfaiz.png
Standing By...COMPLETE!
  • 555: Obviously. It's a pun on "Phi", "Fives" and "Faiz." Hilariously enough, 555 is a possible emergency number for Japan, meaning that every time he transforms he's literally dialing an emergency phone number for help... from himself.
  • Artificial Stupidity: Due to the fact that it's only priority is "Protect Mari" Auto Vajin initially doesn't do a very good job at protecting TAKUMI. It eventually becomes a reliable ally to him even performing a Heroic Sacrifice in the finale of both the series and the movie.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": It's noticeably the Greek Letter Phi.
  • Cool Bike: Auto Vajin's Vehicle Mode is Faiz's personal motorcycle. It can drive by itself and has armor made from a similar material as the Rider Gears.
  • Finishing Move: Whenever Faiz inserts a Mission Memory into his gear and presses Enter on the Faiz Driver, he executes an "Exceed Charge" finisher.
    • Crimson Smash: A Rider Kick that manifests as a red drill piercing the Orphnoch.
      • Axel Crimson Smash: A variant augmented by the Super-Speed of Axel form.
      • Blaster Crimson Smash: Another variant with increased power from Blaster form.
    • Grand Impact: A Rider Punch with the Faiz Shot.
      • Axel Grand Impact: A variant augmented with Super-Speed.
    • Sparkle Cut: A Rider Slash that powers up the Faiz Edge, traps the enemy with a Sword Beam and finishes it off with a powerful slice.
    • Faiz Blaster Sword Mode: "Photon Breaker", which coats the Faiz Blaster in Photon Blood energy for a powerful slash.
    • Faiz Blaster Gun Mode: "Photon Buster", which shoots out a massive beam from the Faiz Blaster.
  • Gatling Good: Auto Vajin's Buster Wheel in Battle Mode is this. It can fire bullets rapidly from its front wheel.
  • Hour of Power: Axel Form only lasts for ten seconds before Faiz reverts to normal.
  • Jack of All Stats: Faiz Form. Also this among the three Rider Gears, as the Faiz gear is the least powerful, but has multiple functions plus is the least taxing towards its Orphnoch users, if still will eventually kill them through continued usage.
  • Laser Blade: Faiz Edge is basically a Lightsaber like weapon whose blade is made of Sol Glass. It damages its opponents not caused by the blade's sharpness alone and the energy it discharges once in contact with the target.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: Not only is he the main Rider with Red as a notable secondary color, his Super Mode Blaster Form drives it home by flooding his suit with red Photon Blood.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Axel Form increases Faiz's power, speed, and defense, allowing Faiz to move at the speed of sound. The form can easily overpower high speed Orphnoch, with the power to destroy several at once, and can tank damage from almost any Orphnoch except Dragon. The drawback, like most forms that fit this mold, is that it has a 10-second time limit.
  • Logical Weakness: As Paradise Regained demonstrates, Faiz Axel does not come with increased traction for Required Secondary Powers. Consequently, a mere bottle of vitamin drink is enough to save a few Orphnochs from being hit with an Axel Crimson Smash when it falls to the ground and Takumi slips on the resulting stain.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Midway through the season (episode 21: Accelerating Spirits), Kaixa gives Takumi the gadget that allows him to transform into Axel Form, his Lightning Bruiser form for the series and his strongest powerup until he gets Blaster Form.
  • Mini-Mecha: Auto Vajin when transformed into Battle Mode.
  • Power Fist: The SB-555C Faiz Shot was designed for specific compatibility with the Faiz Mission Memory, transforming into an energy powered knuckle-duster Faiz can use for his Grand Impact Rider Punch attack. With Axel Form, he can use his enhanced speed to punch multiple enemies while running through them.
  • Protagonist Power-Up Privileges: The reason he got Axel form was because Kusaka gave him the device, for some reason. He only gained access to Blaster Form because he was mailed the Faiz Blaster.
  • Shoulder Cannon: Faiz in Blaster Form has this, the Bloody Cannons.
  • Super Mode: Blaster Form is his final ultimate form in the series, first seen in the movie before appearing in the show during episode thirty-nine.
  • Super-Speed: Axel Form gives him the speed of sound, but only for 10 seconds.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: Faiz Blaster, which has the Blade and Blaster Modes aside from being the briefcase which commands every other function of the Faiz Blaster form.
  • Threatening Shark: Aside from the Phi and Wolf motifs, Faiz has this as a secondary motif. This is revealed in the Kamen Rider Decade Net Movies, and can be seen in the little fangs on his mouthplate.
  • Transforming Mecha: Auto-Vajin, his Cool Bike which not only looks cool and goes fast, but also houses all of his gear and can even transform into a Mini-Mecha in a pinch.

    Mari Sonoda

Mari Sonoda/Wildcat Orphnoch

Portrayed by: Yuria Haga, Aoi Yūki (young)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mari_sonoda.png
A member of the Ryusei School entrusted with the Faiz Gear by her foster father, which she gives to Takumi after finding she is unable to use it herself.
  • Back from the Dead: She dies twice but gets brought back both times.
  • Cat/Dog Dichotomy: She and Takumi have that dynamic, Especially after Paradise Regained.
  • Determinator: She has her moments. Like trying to transform into Faiz, despite knowing it won't work on her.
  • Dude Magnet: She has three people after her. Kusaka and Sawada have loved her since childhood. While Kaido gets a crush on her as well. She ends up with the one guy who isn't really pursuing her, Takumi.
  • Female Feline, Male Mutt: In Paradise Regained she serves as the Female Feline to Takumi's Male Mutt, his Wolf Orphnoch form contrasting with her Wildcat Orphnoch.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: It actually cost her life once. Later zigzagged when Sawada has a change of heart
  • Leitmotif: "Kaban" (Bag), which is about her entrusting her future to Takumi.
  • Oblivious to Love: She never knew Kusaka and Sawada liked her since childhood, despite what everyone else seemed to know.
  • Rebel Leader: In Paradise Lost, she's one of the leaders of the human resistance to the Orphnochs, who have succeeded in wiping out most of humanity.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Gets together with Takumi in Paradise Regained.
  • Say My Name: Shouts "Takumi" quite often.
  • Tsundere: She and Takumi share a lot of Belligerent Sexual Tension.

    Keitaro Kikuchi

Keitaro Kikuchi

Portrayed by: Ken Mizorogi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/keitaro_kikuchi.png
His family runs a dry cleaning service and he houses some of the crew.
  • Allergic to Evil: Well, not quite "evil", per se. The instances where he sneezes and says he's allergic to people with "bad hearts"? There's an Orphnoch nearby. Yes, that applied to Takumi the first time they met as well.
  • Butt-Monkey: In episode 41 at least. The fact it's presented as a comedy moment makes it even worse.
  • For Happiness: The philosophy behind why he cleans clothes, and everything else he does, is because he wants to make the world happy.
  • Nice Guy: He's this through and through, compared to Takumi's Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Non-Action Guy: Since he can't use the Faiz belt, he's relegated to the sidelines.
  • Refused by the Call: Tried to use the Faiz belt once. Since he's a normal human, it rejected him.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Yuka. Due to a lack of communication and her also being enamoured with Kaido, they spend most of the series unaware they're each other's online pen pals. And when they finally do get together, it isn't long before Yuka gets killed, leaving Keitaro with no idea what happened to her and the belief she left him.
  • Token Good Teammate: Is the nicest out of the main trio of protagonists, compared to Anti-Hero Takumi and Deadpan Snarker Mari.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the movie where he gets a chance to transform into Kaixa and defeat an Orphnoch, and manages to live afterwards.

    Masato Kusaka

Masato Kusaka/Kamen Rider Kaixa

Portrayed by: Kohei Murakami (live), Makoto Ito (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/masato_kusaka.png
A man whose one purpose in life is Mari's love, and he'll do anything to have it. Since all our heroes are quite close to Mari, this causes... problems, not helped by the fact that even without that he's an unrepentant jerkass. The primary user of the Kaixa Gear.

Tropes that apply to him in general

  • Adaptational Villainy: Kusaka was never a good guy in the first place in the series, but his counterpart from the non-canon novels is far worse and crosses lines he never would, namely, violently raping Mari at one point.
    • He's also this in the SIC story Lost World, where he leaves Shuji to be killed by Murakami since he believed that he sent Mari flowers, and kills a little girl simply because she was an Orphnoch.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: He was in love with Mari since childhood, she never knew till he flat out told her. And at the end she seemed more interested in Kiba and later Takumi. This doesn't end well for him.
  • Asshole Victim: His death at Kiba's hands is quite brutal, but it's hard to say he didn't deserve it given how much he had done to sabotage his and Takumi's lives out of selfish possessiveness.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: When he was a child, Mari defended him from a group of bullies. This led to him developing a lifelong obsession with her.
  • Breakout Character: Despite his abhorrent behaviour (and in many ways because of it), Kusaka has proven to be quite the popular character with fans, having made multiple appearances in crossovers over the years despite his death in the original series.
  • The Bully: Despite being a bully victim himself as a child, Kusaka himself is a literal bully to anyone who he doesn't like. He intimidates Takumi behind closed doors either for getting in the way between him and Mari, or just seeing him as an eyesore.
  • Character Tic:
    • Wiping his hands with hand wipes when out of Gear, or wiping his hands when in Gear. Takumi lampshades it and snarks if Kusaka is a germaphobe. It's a compulsion Kusaka developed after he imagined he had spilled blood on the night of the Ryusei School reunion.
    • Occasionally, he'll adjust his collar while transformed.
    • All his Rider Kicks are double dropkicks.
  • The Charmer: As nasty as he is underneath, Kusaka is really good at getting others to like him and view him as a Nice Guy. For a time he had everyone around his thumb. Even at his death, Keitaro and Mari didn't completely understand how much of a bastard he was.
  • Dead All Along: The Kusaka in Paradise Regained turned out to be an android copy of the real Kusaka, who remains dead to this day, thus rendering the time alterations in Zi-O that involved Kusaka's appearances moot. Though it's also possible the Kusaka in Geiz Majesty was simply the android in the first place.
  • Declaration of Protection: Towards Mari, and he reacts with extreme violence if he thinks you are planning to do anything to her. Or be next to be.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the usual secondary Rider tropes. Unlike his predecessors, and successors, who are either straight-up heroes like the main riders or started off as anti-heroes who later Took a Level in Kindness via Character Development, Kusaka is voided of these traits and is a Nominal Hero at best, from the start till the end.
  • Demoted to Extra: He gets very little to do in Paradise Lost and is dead before the climax, with Keitaro becoming the one who uses the Kaixa Gear after. It's especially glaring since the film features a character with a very similar personality to him named Mizuhara, whose role Kusaka could have easily filled.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Kusaka in the alternate version of his death in Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai on Takumi's arms, asking him why he has to die when someone like Takumi with nothing to protect lives on.
  • Evil Hero: His duty as a Rider is to protect humans from Orphnochs, but Kusaka is ruthless to anyone he dislikes, especially an Orphnoch. However, he does show some concern towards innocent civilians, and felt grief upon watching Hanagata succumb to his condition as an Orphnoch.
  • Evil Versus Evil: His backstabbing, scheming tendencies causing SO MANY problems, he might as well be a Kaijin himself. He refuses to see the human side of Orphnochs even when some are genuinely good people, including Takumi himself. Even after he's killed before the last few episodes, it's pretty clear that the heroes are now mostly dealing with the fallout of his constant sabotage of their efforts to unite, most notably Kiba's turn to the dark side, which makes his death by hands of the man he more or less psychologically tortured EXTREMELY karmic.
  • Fantastic Racism: He does not respect, care, or treat Orphnoch as normal human beings. While most of them were either a Monster of the Week, he sees the innocent ones as lesser beings that deserve to be murdered.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Kusaka looks like a decent guy on the surface when he's anything but. He doesn't hesitate to drop the act if you come between him and Mari, as Takumi learned firsthand. He wants all Orphnochs eliminated completely, and even looks down on both Takumi and Kiba for being Orphnochs.
  • Final Solution: He may be willing to work with other Orphnochs like Kiba or Takumi, but in the end he plans to kill every single one if it's ever within his reach to do so.
  • Foil: To Takumi. Takumi is rough around the edges and is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, while Kusaka is superficially charming but is a Jerk with a Heart of Jerk.
  • Freudian Excuse: Was bullied heavily in an orphanage, with only Mari standing up for him. Likewise, Kusaka's horrific past with the Dragon Orphnoch did not do him any favors.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: At least in regards to his "allies" that actually know he's a Manipulative Bastard.
  • Hate Sink: He is a generally unlikeable person who manipulates others into thinking he's a charming Anti-Hero, and will try to execute any who stand in his way. Slightly zigzagged though, at least when seeing his concern for innocent bystanders, as well as care for his orphanage classmates.
  • The Heavy: One of the reasons the conflict takes so long to resolve is because of Kusaka worsening the relations between humans and Orphnochs.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: He is self-entitled, petty, and spiteful.
  • Hypocrite: Proclaims that Orphnochs are inherently inhuman inside and out, yet is more than capable of cruelty.
  • It's All About Me: THE defining aspect of his character, to the point of it being a meme.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: While his predecessors and many successors in the Secondary Rider line are more of Jerk with a Heart of Gold, he's so far the first of said category to be a full blown Jerkass. It wouldn't be until Mitsuzane Kureshima that we'd get another like him (the latter is more of a Tertiary Rider). Curiously, Mitsuzane shared many traits with him.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: No matter the continuity, he never completely gets away with what he does. Sooner or later, his luck finally runs out. Even in Kamen Rider Zi-O, where he is less vicious, he comes dangerously close to getting his neck snapped again.
  • Karmic Death: Throughout most of the show, he'd been sabotaging the potential friendship of Takumi and Kiba, and subsequently, any chance of a united front against Smart Brain, just for his own ends, also torturing both about their supposed inherent inhumanity. Ultimately, Kusaka is murdered by Kiba, who ended up snapping from being treated cruelly by other people like Kusaka. And Kiba does the deed with the Kaixa Gear as well. Moreover, he dies alone, forced to watch Mari from afar
    • In the Faiz novel, his stalkerish behavior towards and rape of Mari gets paid back by Kiba literally ripping him limb-from-limb and his getting "taken in" by his own Stalker with a Crush, Saya Kimura, very much in the fashion of Misery.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: His unhinged obsession towards Mari, which borders onto an Oedipus complex.
  • Manipulative Bastard: A very excellent social manipulator, capable of getting others to like him and keeping them oblivious from his machinations as he does everything in his power to break apart Takumi and Kiba's friendship and keep humans and Orphnochs hostile to each other.
  • Neck Snap: He gets dealt this in his in-series death before being left to die
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Gave Takumi the Axel Watch for absolutely no reason stated, though it's likely that he didn't care either.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He fights with the heroes merely out of his prejudice towards Orphnochs and twisted love towards Mari rather than a moral principle.
  • Slasher Smile: He is frequently seen with a devilish smile when no one else is looking, particularly when he sees an opportunity for a new scheme or when one such scheme is going his way.
  • Smug Snake: Firmly convinced of his own superiority over the people around him.
  • The Sociopath: Possibly. Kusaka is incredibly skilled at charming others and keeping his true nature under wraps, while keeping the ones who do know of his true colors isolated. He has an attachment to Mari, but it is an obsession of sorts. He also revels at the chance to fight and kill Orphnochs. However, he does show some concern to innocent bystanders and people he trusts, such as Keitaro and former members of the Ryusei Orphanage.
  • The Spock: He's a cold pragmatist.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Condescending towards Takumi, though he's charismatic enough to keep his true nature eclipsed from Mari and Keitaro.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He might be fighting against Smart Brain, but he is still one messed up dude.
  • The Unfettered: His only two goals are to protect and be with Mari and to stop the Orphnoch and Smart Brain. He'll only consider giving one of these up if he sees them as having become mutually exclusive, such as when he has to choose between giving the belts to Smart Brain or not reviving Mari; he chooses the latter since he has no guarantee Smart Brain will keep their word. Not that he didn't feel grief in doing so.
  • Yandere: He gets violently jealous of anyone close to Mari. One of his main goals is taking Takumi's place in Mari's heart, or really ANYONE'S place in Mari's heart.

Tropes exclusive to him as Kamen Rider Kaixa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krkaixa.png
STANDING BY...COMPLETE!
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": The Greek letter Χ (Chi), which is part of Kaixa's motif as seen in his chest, his Memory Mission, and his insignia.
  • Cool Sidecar: SB-913V Side Basshar, as the name would suggest. In vehicle mode, the Side Basshar can travel through rough terrain safely and the side car can move on its own. The tires are made of Sol Rubber, similar metallic properties to the Rider Gears. In Battle Mode, it transforms into a walking battle mecha as its stronger aspect. The sidecar has a pincered heat point capable of generating temperatures up to 2000 degrees celsius during grappling attacks, and the machine can fire eight to forty eight misiles with a range of 2400 meters.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: The Kaixa Phone's voice is lower-pitched in comparison to the Faiz Phone's voice, fitting Kusaka's status as a jerkass anti-hero.
  • Finishing Move:
    • ''Gold Smash'': Kaixa jumps in the air and the Kaixa Pointer produces a pair of overlapping yellow energy drills around his foot while executing the deathblow with a double dropkick.
    • ''Grand Impact'': Using the Kaixa Shot, the rider uses an energy powered knuckle-duster to deliver a punch.
    • ''Xeno Crash'': Kaixa shoots a constricting energy net from the gun section of the Kaixa Blaygun as the sword section is overcharged. Kaixa’s speed increases to slash the enemy with a dashing strike from the energy it discharges with the target.
  • Flawed Prototype: Will instantly kill any users that cannot handle it properly, whereas the Faiz Gear will simply reject unqualified users.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kaixa" is pronounced the same way "Kaiser" (German for "emperor") would be. It suits both Kusaka's personality and the fact he's the best of the riders when it comes to utilizing his abilities. His attacks having the name "Xeno" is appropriate because of Kusaka's xenophobia against Orphnochs
  • Power Fist: Kaixa Shot.
  • Reverse Grip: Wields the Kaixa Blaygun this way. Justified, as the blade is uni-directional and the gun barrel is away from the traditional sword edge.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: Kaixa Blaygun.
  • Transforming Mecha: Side Basshar.

Renegade Orphnochs

    Yuji Kiba

Standing By...COMPLETE!
The unofficial leader of the Renegade Orphnochs.

Tropes that apply to him in general

  • All Up to You: At the end of Paradise Lost a dying Yuji entrusts Takumi to fulfill his dream of peace between humans and Orphnochs.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: To a lesser extent compared to Yuka, but he's also willing to kill if he's pushed too far despite being generally helpful to others, most notably Chie.
  • Character Tics: Several, if he's wearing a Rider Gear. Outside of the series, this is to set him apart from other Riders with signature tics:
    • He puts the Rider Gear's phone onto the belt with his left hand when transforming. He only uses his right hand if he transforms as Orga.
    • As Kaixa, he fights similarly when he was briefly using the Faiz Gear (Performing a flying side kick for the Gold Smash and wielding the Kaixa Blaygun like a traditional sword when doing the Xeno Clash).
  • Despair Event Horizon: Yuka's death apparently at the hands of human police sends him over the edge and causes him to abandon his ideals. In Paradise Lost, this also happens when Murakami and Smart Lady trick Kiba into thinking Mari betrayed him in order to turn him against humanity so he can become Kamen Rider Orga.
  • Deuteragonist: Yuji is the secondary protagonist of the series, with almost enough focus and Character Development as Takumi and even became Faiz as the main hero for a while. He's also the first main deuteragonist to not be a Secondary Rider (even though he ends up using two three counting Paradise Lost Rider gears).
  • Fallen Hero: By the end, he ends up as an Anti-Villain after losing his humanity in Yuka's supposed death by the police and becoming the Chairman of Smart Brain.
  • Henshin Hero: Has briefly had time as both Faiz and Kaixa. Notably, he's the only non-protagonist in the history of the franchise, who has taken on the role of the protagonist Rider for more than two episodes (Yuji was Kamen Rider Faiz for four episodes). Then there's him becoming Orga in the movie.
  • Informed Ability: According to official stats, Orga has higher punching and kicking power than Faiz even in Blaster Form. However, once Faiz transforms into said form, he tanks all of Orga's punches like nothing, resulting in a very one-sided battle.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Kusaka sabotages his attempts to become friends with Takumi. In addition to how he can be more confused about whether he's more human or Orphnoch, whether protecting either side is just, or whether either side is just at all, this results in Kiba developing an enmity against Faiz and frequently fighting him, despite building a friendship with Takumi in their human form, and at one point, both still fight for real after knowing their identities.
  • Mighty Glacier: As Orga, Kiba has the best defensive and offensive output of all the five Rider gears and even Faiz Axel. He has more power than Kaixa, more physical power and produces more Photon Blood than Psyga, and has more variety in his attack capabilities than Delta. It can also tank attacks from the Elasmotherium Orphnoch, the biggest and most dangerous, who killed Yuka, ate Kaidou, and smashed the Auto Vajin in one hit. The downside is that it is extremely slow, being unable to keep up with any of Faiz's forms, it's much slower than Kaixa and it's powerful armor is more weighted than the rest.
  • Nice Guy: Yuji is a nice character that wants to protect humans and help Takumi in spite of his horrendous backstory. The only problem is that Kusaka has a nasty habit of tricking Yuji in fighting Faiz.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: Yes, he's the Horse Orphnoch, but his powered-up form does resemble a centaur more than anything else.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: In his villainous stint, he ended up killing Kusaka who murdered innocent people, played friends like chess, and was overall a horrible person.
  • Pre-Final Boss: Right before Takumi goes to stop the Orphnoch King, he has a one-on-one duel with Kiba. They start off doing battle as Faiz and Kaixa, before switching to their Orphnoch forms once they knock each other out of their Rider transformations.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After performing a Face–Heel Turn, Kiba comes back around and sacrifices himself in the Final Battle so Faiz can defeat the Arch Orphonoch. For bonus points, his Orphnoch form reverted back into its original state, likely as a symbol of sorts
  • Trauma Conga Line: Holy. The first episode alone has him getting into a car accident putting him in a coma for 2 years. Then dying and reviving as an Orphnoch. He then finds, one his parents are dead, two he's homeless as his uncle sold his house, and that his uncle is corrupt. Three his girlfriend moved on and is dating his cousin, and his cousin tells him this in the most jackass way possible. Then he finds out his girlfriend was a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing the whole time, namely without knowing Yuji killed his cousin she sells him out to the police right in front of him just to save herself.
  • Villains Never Lie: After he does his Face–Heel Turn, he's completely honest about only wanting a future for Orphnoch kind and not caring about humanity anymore.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Once he's convinced that peace between humans and Orphnochs is inevitable, he begins working to ensure the Orphnochs' future at the expense of humanity.

    Yuka Osada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuka_osada.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crane_orphnoch.png
A bullied schoolgirl who became an Orphnoch. She's a nice, shy girl even if she has... issues.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's the nicest and most soft spoken of the Renegade Orphnochs, but push her too far and you'll find she's also the most willing to kill.
  • Break the Cutie: The reason for her eventually snapping and killing her sister and basketball teammates.
  • Broken Bird: Obviously, what with being the Crane Orphnoch and all.
  • Jerkass Ball: In #41, she acted uncharacteristically rude against Keitaro while they're at the amusement park, pushing him to the ground simply because he tried reaching for her hand.
  • Joshikousei: She was a high school student before turning into an Orphnoch.
  • Loophole Abuse: This is the reason why she isn’t targeted by Smart Brain. Though she's part of the Renegade Orphnoch, she kills humans who are abusive or cruel. Because she is technically attacking humans, she is sometimes spared from the wrath of Smart Brain.
  • Morality Chain: Proves to be one for Kiba, who goes off the deep end when she's killed, seemingly at the hands of humans.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: That's the thing with her: everyone she kills tends to be a gigantic jerk.
  • The Scapegoat: Her sister blamed her for pushing her down the hill and giving her a broken ankle when it wasn't her.
  • Show Some Leg: Stops Teruo beating up Keitaro by lifting her skirt.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Keitaro. Even when they finally do hook up she gets killed not longer after, having just enough time to leave him a farewell message before passing on.
  • Token Good Teammate: She's far and away the nicest of the Orphnochs along with Kiba and among the Renegades, though she had a good body count consisting of Asshole Victims, she's the only one who never turns outright evil.
  • The Un-Favorite: Her parents prefer her sister over her.

    Naoya Kaido

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/snake_orphnoch_edited.png
An eccentric former musician who also becomes an Orphnoch.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He's eccentric to the point of insanity.
  • Death by Adaptation: In the Paradise Lost movie he gets eaten by the Elasmotherium Orphnoch.
  • Death Seeker: Inverted in Kamen Rider Yongou where after having spent 10 years without his dead friends, he decides that death is completely meaningless and full of sadness, and is willing to protect Takumi's life at any cost... even if that's the whole world being under the reign of Shocker.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: Had to abandon his ambitions to become a professional guitarist due to an injury to his hand.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: In addition to being eccentric he often has mood swings that cause him to get angry.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Acts aloof towards Kiba and Yuka but he does genuinely care for them.
  • Oblivious to Love: Remains cheerfully unaware that Yuka has feelings for him.
  • Sole Survivor: He is the last good Orphnoch alive of his own series following the conclusion of Kamen Rider Yongou. Kaido, however, wonders if Takumi is still walking on the face of Earth.
  • Wild Card: Kaido goes back and forth on whether he wants to help humanity.

Standing by... Complete!

The primary user of the Delta Gear. Despite being rather cowardly, he's loyal to all of his friends, willing to help them in the face of danger, something that protects him from the Delta Gear's side effects.

  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": The Delta Gear has its own Delta symbol on it.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: After getting the Delta gear, Smart Brain starts tracking his movements to get the belt back.
  • Character Tic: All his Rider Kicks are Bicycle Kicks.
  • Finishing Move: Lucifer's Hammer
  • Friend to All Children: Having been an orphan once, he and Rina work at an orphanage, wanting to care for the children with no parents.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Which is why he is the perfect user for the Delta belt: he is one of the few that it's power didn't corrupt.
  • Killed Offscreen: He doesn't show up in The Movie for this reason. The explanation comes in the prequel story Lost World (from S.I.C. Hero Saga), where Kusaka throws him to the Rose Orphnoch because he's (wrongly) convinced that Mihara was putting the moves on Mari.
  • Lovable Coward: At first he doesn't really care about fighting the Orphnochs and just wants to go back to living a normal life. He got better.
  • The McCoy: The most angsty of the three Riders.
  • Refusal of the Call: Even before he got the Delta belt, he actively tried to ignore the weirdness going around him. Subverted later on, when he finally realizes that he has the responsibility to fight for others.
  • Ship Tease: He has some with Rina.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: As the Delta user, he has the most power. But has no idea how to fight, nor does he want to.

    Rina Abe

Rina Abe

Portrayed by: Rie Kasai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rina_abe.png

  • Faux Action Girl: Became Delta for a short period of time in episode 39 but was unsuccesful at combat.
  • Friend to All Children: Having been an orphan once, she and Mihara work at an orphanage, wanting to care for the children with no parents.
  • Ship Tease: Has some with Mihara.

    Hanagata

Hanagata/Goat Orphnoch

Portrayed by: Koji Naka (live), Makoto Ito (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hanagata.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goat_orphnoch.png
The foster father of Ryusel School, former chief of Smart Brain, and the creator of the three Rider belts.
  • Big Good: Helped contributed kickstarting some of the events while also being a social father figure to most of the main cast, wanting to prepare them for the final battle.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Easily defeats Kitazaki after the latter has just delivered this to Kusaka and Mihara. Even after Kitazaki transforms into Dragon-Human form, previously shown capable of overwhelming Faiz Axel, Hanagata swiftly avoids his attacks and overpowers him.
  • Honest Corporate Executive: Founded Smart Brain in purpose to further evolve the mankind for the better.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Assigned Kiba to be the new chief of Smart Brain, unaware of the latter's personality change at the time.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: He doesn't see much of combat in the series proper, but he's one of the strongest Orphnoch while also being the founder and the former chief of Smart Brain. Once we see him fighting someone else, it's him easily handling Kitazaki.
  • Super-Power Meltdown: Died due to the rapid evolution in his body.
  • Team Dad: For the Ryusel School members, even attempting to stop Masato from transforming to save him.
  • Token Good Teammate: For all of Smart Brain.

    Saya Kimura

Saya Kimura/Kamen Rider Delta (I)

Portrayed by: Mai Saito

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saya_kimura.png
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Quite a gentle person, yet was the Delta user who instilled fear onto Takuma.
  • Faux Action Girl: Zig-zagged. Saya was quite a capable fighter as Delta and didn't get corrupted by its power as two of her other schoolmates had, but due to falling ill because of the strain of suppressing the belt's influence and Orphnoch DNA, she was easily killed by Sawada before she could transform.
  • Secret Test of Character: Waited to see what kind of person Takumi was before deciding to hand over the Delta Gear to him.

Orphnochs

    Orphnochs in general
A race of monsters who are the next evolutionary stage for humankind, created from humans who possess a specific gene which allows them to revive after dying.
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Each Orphnoch is based on a monstrous humanoid version of an existing creature. Usually an animal, but some have been plants or fungi. Nearly all Orphnochs are usually referred to either by their human name or the creature they represent (Horse Orphnoch, Wolf Orphnoch, ect).
  • Came Back Strong: All Orphnochs were once normal humans who transformed after death to gain their power.
  • Color Motif: Orphnochs are characterized by being uniformly gray in color. This represents their semi-undead status and gives them the appearance of living statues.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To the Monsters of the Week of all previous Kamen Rider Shows. Unlike previous monsters who were all evil (with some exceptions like the Mole Beastman and the Whale Mutant), some of the Orphnochs are heroic characters who wish for peace between their race and humanity, and even Takumi himself is one.
  • Death-Activated Superpower: A person with latent Orphnoch genes will only gain their powers after death. Others can become Orphnochs if they are "sired" by another Orphnoch killing them.
  • Human Subspecies: Stated to be the next evolution of humanity, yet such an evolution can only be triggered if someone with the Orphnoch gene either dies or is sired by another Orphnoch. It's eventually revealed that transforming into an Orphnoch is such a rapid "evolution" that all Orphnochs will die soon after their revival.
  • Living Shadow: The Orphnochs' shadows tend to shape themselves into the image of their human selves. It becomes a Rule of Symbolism in the final episodes to reference an Orphnoch's lingering humanity.
  • Monster of the Week: Most episodes see a new Orphnoch showing up to either target Mari for the Faiz Belt, kill humans on order of Smart Brain or just use their powers for mischief.
  • Mutant: Each was once a human before having their Orphnoch genes awakened.
  • Not Always Evil: It's established at many points that a lot of Orphnochs are still people who would be happy to carry on with their daily lives. Several heroic characters, including the main protagonist, are Orphnochs.
  • Reduced to Dust: Orphnochs collapse into piles of dust upon death, whether in human or Orphnoch form at the time.
  • Shirtless Scene: Whenever an Orphnoch speaks in their Orphnoch form, a silhouette of their naked human form is shown in the background, even though Magic Pants applies whenever they transform.
  • Technically Living Zombie: An Orphnoch can only be born when a human with the Orphnoch gene rises from death in a monstrous form. They're considered living, but in a fundamentally different way than the traditional definition of "life".
  • Transhuman Treachery: Quite a few reject their humanity upon becoming Orphnochs and turn their powers against the species they were once a part of.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Orphochs can shift between human and monster form at will, leading to much in-universe paranoia that any random person on the street could be an Orphnoch in disguise waiting to strike.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: An Orphnoch's second chance at life is only temporary. Due to a flaw in their genes caused by their rapid mutation, all Orphnochs are doomed to die shortly after their initial revival. The exact time they can live varies based on circumstances, particularly depending on if they revived naturally or were "sired" by another. In either case, they seem to have a few years to live at absolute best. One of the main goals of the lead Orphnochs is to find a way to fix this genetic flaw.

Smart Brain

    General Tropes

Smart Brain

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smart_brain.png
Life is frail. Life is limited. So, why don't you think about true life? Be smart! True life is your start!
The company that manufactures the Rider Gears, secretly they are a front for a large coordinated-group of Orphnochs seeking to increase the number of Orphnochs by wiping out humanity.
  • Back from the Dead: In spite of being defunct after the Orphnoch King was left under stasis by Saeko Kageyama after he was critically injured by Faiz, Kamen Rider Genms -Smart Brain and the 1000% Crisis- shows that they're still up-and-running in the 2020s.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In the Bad Future of Kamen Rider 555: Paradise Lost, Smart Brain has managed to topple humanity and is weeding out the survivors gradually. While Takumi and Mari reach the end of their personal story, their efforts don't really damage the company.
  • Consummate Professional: While Smart Brain is a hostile corporation trying to Take Over the World, it usually honors its agreements and is perfectly fine to do business with its enemies as long as they get something out of it. Whether said enemies are around to work with them again is another matter.
  • Create Your Own Hero: The Faiz, Kaixa and Delta belts were all made by them, yet wind up being used to fight against them instead of for their original purpose to protect the Orphnoch King. By Paradise Regained, the company has been attempting to invoke this in a literal sense by creating android duplicates of established people, like Kitazaki and Kusaka.
  • Expy: They're basically a MegaCorp version of Shocker, being a Nebulous Evil Organisation dedicated to creating a new transhuman race to supplant humankind.
  • Fantastic Racism: The company's ultimate agenda is to supplant humanity with the Orphnoch race. By Paradise Regained, this racism has transferred to Orphnochs instead.
  • Final Solution: Their goal is the eradication of humanity so Orphnochs can thrive. In Paradise Regained, they're trying to eradicate Orphnoch-kind instead.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Even Kyouji answers to the so-called "Wire Pullers" of Smart Brain, at least in Paradise Lost (it's not clear if they were also in the main series continuity). We never see them besides some projected images on screens, but their voices are provided by voice actors who have voiced other Big Bad roles in Toei's toku series for years, including Seizō Katō and Gorō Naya, which could imply that Smart Brain might just be another attempt by the Great Leader.
  • Irony: By Paradise Regained, the MegaCorp that wanted to destroy humanity to replace them with Orphnochs has flipped its stance completely to killing all Orphnochs, while still being an enemy to the heroes.
  • Kill All Humans: Their end goal is the elimination of humanity, through awakening the ones who can become Orphnochs and killing the ones who can't. Then it gets inverted in Paradise Regained with the Orphnochs being targeted for death by Smart Brain.
  • MegaCorp: They're one of the leading manufacturers of electronics in the world of Kamen Rider 555, and they have branches in plenty of other industries too.
  • N.G.O. Superpower: They have enough resources to form their own private police and in Paradise Lost they've effectively become the world government.
  • One Nation Under Copyright: In the Bad Future of Paradise Lost they seem to have become the ones in charge of the new order put in place following the Orphnoch revolution.
  • Robot Me: By the time of Paradise Regained, Smart Brain has been dabbling in the creation of android duplicates of named characters like Kusaka. One of them even becomes the new President.
  • Sigil Spam: They love to plaster their company name and logo on their products.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Smart Brain is an established, well-trusted brand in the World of 555, being the forefront of advances in food and home-care products. They're also trying to eradicate humanity in secret and have done a great job hiding this from the rest of the world.

    Kyouji Murakami

Kyouji Murakami/Rose Orphnoch

Portrayed by: Katsuyuki Murai (live), Jiro Okamoto (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kyouji_murakami.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rose_orphnoch.png
The president of Smart Brain. A well-mannered, but incredibly dangerous man who holds a bad reputation within his corporation.
  • 0% Approval Rating: Everyone appears to dislike him to some degree, and he once suffered an assassination attempt at hands of his own employees for using dirty methods to gain his position at Smart Brain. When Hanagata returns he has little effort convincing Smart Brain's board to vote him out.
  • Affably Evil: He may be the one behind Lucky Clover, but he's a cordial and well spoken person in all of his interactions with others.
  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: Threatens Jay's dog Chaco to get him to go out after Faiz when he's on his last life.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Although he dies, he's able to ensure the Orphnoch King remains stable and allow Kiba to later awaken it, giving Orphnochs a chance to correct their genetic instability.
  • Big Bad: He is the chief of Smart Brain for most of the series and driving force behind the attacks from Orphnochs towards humanity.
  • Brain in a Jar: In the Paradise Lost movie he's been reduced to a head in a glass tank for some reason. It later gets an explanation in the SIC Hero Saga story Kamen Rider 555: Lost World.
  • Catchphrase: "Best of the best", and occasionally the inverse, "worst of the worst".
  • The Chessmaster: An expert when it comes to having multiple plans at once and taking advantage of opportunities as they arise in order to further his agenda.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: The chief of Smart Brain and secretly an Orphnoch who plans the genocide of the human population.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: He doesn't give any details, but in #44 he alludes to something that convinced him that peace between humans and Orphnochs was impossible.
  • Devour the Dragon: Voluntarily on his behalf. He offers himself up to the Orphnoch King to correct its genetic instability.
  • Diabolical Mastermind: Runs Smart Brain and uses their resources to gather Orphnochs into a covert front against humanity, whilst employing an elite team of assassins to hunt down any threats to his plans.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: He's relieved from his spot as Smart Brain's president in favor of Kiba after Hanagata returns and shortly after that is defeated by Faiz, Kaixa and Delta, leaving Kiba and the Arch Orphnoch as the final bosses.
  • Homage: The Rose Orphnoch's glass dome-like head is a nod to Hakaider.
  • Knight Templar: Believes humans will always act hostile to Orphnochs, and that the only way to ensure a future for Orphnochs is to wipe them all out before they wipe Orphnochs out.
  • Leitmotif: A track of Ominous Latin Chanting can be heard whenever he's plotting. He even keeps a music player at his desk to play it.
  • Manipulative Bastard: In Paradise Lost he has Smart Lady trick Yuji into thinking Mari betrayed him in order to break his spirits and get him to turn against humanity.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: He's the chief of Smart Brain and shows himself to be one of the toughest Orphnochs in the series whenever he takes to the field, even managing to outmatch two of the Riders at once.
  • Something about a Rose: His Orphnoch form is the Rose Orphnoch.
  • The Usurper: Seized power in Smart Brain after Hanagata mysteriously vanished.
  • Wicked Cultured: He is always well-dressed, likes exquisite cuisine and appreciates art.

    Smart Lady

Smart Lady (I)

Portrayed by: Hitomi Kurihara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smart_lady.png
The mascot of Smart Brain, who acts Murakami's assistant and helps recently sired Orphnochs.
  • Affably Evil: She may be the mascot for an evil MegaCorp, but she's very upbeat and friendly, if excessively so.
  • Ambiguously Human: She's working for a company controlled by Orphnochs, yet never displays anything that would suggest she's an Orphnoch herself or anything apart from a normal human. She is, however, associated with blue morpho butterflies.
  • Genki Girl: Always acts super cheerful, to the point where it annoys her co-workers.
  • Gold Digger: After Murakami gets ousted as CEO, she implies the reason she was so close to him was for his money.
  • The Heavy: During the first arc before Murakami is introduced, she's the one who recruits Kiba, Yuka and Naoya into Smart Brain and sends the other employees after the Faiz gear.
  • Mascot: She's the living mascot of Smart Brain.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: While she has affections for certain people like Murakami, she's ultimately loyal to whoever sits in the president's chair.
  • The Scrappy: In-universe. She is seen as this by Smart Brain's employees for her overly-cheery personality.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Her fate after the series is a mystery, but she is likely replaced by Smart Queen in Outsiders and a second Smart Lady in Paradise Regained.

    Riotroopers

Riotroopers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/riotrooper.png
Smart Brain's own private military force. They make their debut in the Non-Serial Movie Paradise Lost but appear later on in the regular series.
  • Canon Immigrant: Created for a Non-Serial Movie but ended up being incorporated in the series itself.
  • Evil Knockoff: Riotroopers use modified and re-colored versions of the Faiz Gear, and, as such, their Rider forms are very similar to Kamen Rider Faiz. However, they are overall weaker in power compared to the real deal.
  • The Men in Black: When not transformed, they invoke the look - wearing all-black ensembles and black shades.
  • Mooks: In Paradise Lost they're the main henchmen used by Smart Brain.
  • Private Military Contractors: They're Smart Brain's own private military.
  • The Psycho Rangers: They resemble less detailed versions of each of the three main Riders.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: Their weapons are the Axel Ray Gun, a short blade that can bend at the hilt to use it's blaster mode.
  • Zerg Rush: Since they're weaker than the main Riders in terms of power, they are shown to fight together in teams.

Lucky Clover

    General Tropes

Lucky Clover

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bar_clover.png
A team of four elite Orphnochs who work as assassins for the Smart Brain corporation.
  • Artifact Title: The name "Lucky Clover" becomes this when they lose one of their members, resulting in them having the same number of members as a normal clover rather than a lucky one.
  • Bad Guy Bar: They run their own bar, the Clover Bar.
  • Elite Four: They're four of the strongest Orphnochs around. They wind up as an Elite Three for a portion of the series though thanks to the death of Jay.
  • Four Is Death: There's four of them and they're all skilled assassins.
  • Homage: Each of their Orphnoch forms shares a motif with a different member of the Hakaider Squad.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: They're stronger than the regular Orphnochs and each member has their own eccentricities, although for the most part they're deadly and dangerous rather than "quirky".

    Jay

Jay/Crocodile Orphnoch

Portrayed by: Kenneth Duria (live), Jiro Okamoto (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mr_j.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crocodile_orphnoch.png
The first member of Lucky Clover to be sent out after Faiz, Jay is an Orphnoch with the power to regenerate himself after suffering fatal wounds, though it only works twice.
  • Back from the Dead: He can revive himself twice, meaning he has to be killed three times in order to fully defeat him.
  • Black Dude Dies First: He's the first of the Lucky Clover to go down.
  • The Brute: He seems to be Murakami's go-to-guy for missions that require assassination and brute force.
  • Forced into Evil: After getting killed twice Jay was reluctant to continue to pursue Faiz, until Murakami threatens Chaco.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: He's the Crocodile Orphnoch.
  • Pet the Dog: Literally when it comes to his pet dog Chaco. The only reason he continues going after Faiz is because Murakami threatens it.
  • Scary Black Man: He's a black man which, in a cast of mostly Japanese actors, certainly makes him stand out.

    Itsuro Takuma

Itsuro Takuma/Centipede Orphnoch

Portrayed by: Jun Yamasaki (live), Seiji Takaiwa (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/itsuro_takuma.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/centipede_orphnoch.png
A member of the Lucky Clover with a taste for poetry and massive crush on Saeko Kageyama.
  • Butt-Monkey: Once Kitazaki appears, Takuma often gets bullied by the former and is on the receiving end of a few comical moments. Not even the end of the series spared him from this, as in his new life as a construction worker, he tumbles down and accidentally spills his wheelbarrow, prompting his boss to pinch his cheeks and makes him get back to work.
  • Creepy Centipedes: He's the Centipede Orphnoch.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Towards Kitazaki twice. #41 has him gently sending down Kitazaki down the stairs while he was injured, claiming that "his hand slipped" and still snickered even as the latter retaliated. Then in #49, after Kitazaki was weakened from the fight, Takuma gleefully took the opportunity to whip him right before Teruo arrives to finish the deed.
  • Evil Genius: He's much more cunning in comparison to the other members of Lucky Clover, preferring to analyze the situation and strategize rather than rush into battle.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In the end, he abandons Smart Brain's cause upon seeing the Arch Orphnoch evolve Saeko and instead starts a new life in human society as a construction worker.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Upon seeing Teruo become the Arch Orphnoch and devour Kitazaki, he became scared and stuttered while attempting to tell Saeko about it.
  • Poisonous Person: In his Orphnoch form, he's capable of emitting toxic substances that cause pain.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!: The Arch Orphnoch evolving Saeko horrified him so much that he fled the scene in fear and decided to spend his remaining days as a human.
  • Smug Snake: He seems like a competent villain at first and manages to lay down a Curb-Stomp Battle to the heroes several times. Getting his ass kicked by Faiz's Axel Form takes him down a few pegs.
  • Villain Decay: Starts off as a formidable-enough threat but by the end of the series he's become little more than Kitazaki's whipping boy.
  • Weapon Specialization: Wields a whip in battle.
  • Wicked Cultured: He can wax poetical whilst kicking ass.

    Saeko Kageyama

Saeko Kageyama/Lobster Orphnoch

Portrayed by: Waka (live), Takeshi Mizutani (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lobster_orphnoch.png
The Lucky Clover member who runs their bar and acts as something of a Team Mom to the other members.
  • Dark Action Girl: The seductive but ruthless female member of Lucky Clover, as well as the who runs the Lucky Clover's Clover Bar.
  • Determinator: Is wholly devoted to the Orphnochs' cause, intends on surviving, and her final scene has her awaiting her king's recovery.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Downplayed. When Kitazaki decided to kill Teruo in hopes of being the new king, Saeko and Takuma turn on him to protect their king, though she also did this out of the intent to survive.
  • Evil Feels Good: Her conversation with Takumi in #37 inferences that she enjoys being an Orphnoch because it lets her harm others.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She acts comforting to her victims, though its often while she's in the process of killing them.
  • Karma Houdini: Killed Yuka and thus set off Kiba's Face–Heel Turn, yet she managed to survive the end of the series, albeit insane and trapped in her Orphnoch form. Also, if one were to take OOO, Den-O, All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Riders into account, then it's subverted when Faiz voids the Lobster Orphonoch's warranty.
  • Kick the Dog: She really didn't have any reason to kill Yuka. Even by Smart Brain's own standards, she wasn't a target for them because of all the Asshole Victims she killed. Yet she murders her anyway solely out of spite.
  • One Last Smoke: Invoked by her. She always sends her targets a bottle of wine before she kills them.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Unless she's in battle or furious (the latter of which is extremely rare), she's always smiling. This isn't benevolent at all; it just shows how unhinged she is.
  • Pet the Dog: Occasionally comforts Takuma from any of his distresses such as his conflicts with Kitazaki.
  • Sadist: Really seems to enjoy watching her victims suffer.
  • Team Mom: While she has difficulty caring for anyone, she does at least try to mitigate the tensions between Kitazaki and Takuma, if only to keep them working as a team.
  • Transhuman Treachery: More so than the other Orphnochs, she allowed the Arch Orphnoch to destroy the vestiages of her humanity to be a perfected Orphnoch.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Has been seen in numerous outfits, ranging from her proprietor uniform to anything that's conservatively casual, and alternates between tying her hair and letting it loose.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Became interested with Takumi during the latter's short tenure with the Lucky Clover up until he made a challenge to fight her, Takuma, and Kitazaki.
  • Villainous Friendship: She's at the very least close enough with Murakami to speak to him more casually and personally.

    Kitazaki

Kitazaki/Dragon Orphnoch/Kamen Rider Delta (II)

Portrayed by: Ray Fujita (live), Jun Watanabe (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kitazaki.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dragon_orphnoch.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dragon_orphnoch_0.png
Lucky Clover's youngest member and the most ruthless Orphnoch to work for Smart Brain. Kitazaki is a socially-withdrawn teenager with one thing in mind: to have fun at the expense of others.
  • Ax-Crazy: Kitazaki is clearly the most unhinged Orphnoch among Smart Brain's elite.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Kitazaki desires to be the strongest Orphnoch, but the awakened Arch-Orphnoch is on another level and his refusal to accept that gets his face ripped off.
  • Blood Knight: Kitazaki likes a good fight just as he likes killing, considering "fighting" and "playing" to be the same thing.
  • The Bully: What he really is at his core, an obnoxious, disrespectful teenager who torments everyone around him and still thinks he is the best.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Takeshi Asakura, each being a murderous Blood Knight who ends up a Big Bad Wannabe. But while Asakura is actually shown to be dangerously intelligent, Kitazaki has a self-inflated ego and nearly got himself killed when facing an opponent vastly stronger than himself.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Kitazaki got his face ripped off by the Arch Orphnoch, not that he didn't deserve it. Becomes a double subversion during the events of Paradise Regained as a robot duplicate of Kitazaki is made.
  • The Dragon: The Lucky Clover's strongest member and the one who gets sent in when they really mean business. Rather appropriate considering his dragon motif. Ends up a subverted Dragon Ascendant by "Paradise Regained", being the only remaining member of the old Smart Brain regime to have a robot created in his likeness to lead current Smart Brain while answering only to the government.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: He cares little for the Orphnochs' cause, but works under Murakami solely to have his fun.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: The only person to show respect for him is Saeko Kageyama, and that's because she's the Team Mom. The moment Kitazaki decides to despose the Arch Orphnoch, Saeko loses her respect for him and conspired with Takuma to betray him.
  • Good Hair, Evil Hair: His hair is always messy and unkempt, and so are his signature clothes, reflecting on how he ignores his own appearance to give more importance to things he considers to be fun.
  • Hate Sink: Not to the same level as Kusaka, but from his arrogant attitude to his treatment of Takuma, it's hard not to hate him.
  • Jerkass: Aside from his love of violence, he displays an extreme amount of arrogance and disregard for others.
  • Lack of Empathy: As far as he's concerned, other people are nothing more than toys to be broken and thrown away.
  • Narcissist: Thinks he is better than his king, and tries to kill him just to prove it. He soon learns that trying it wasn't a good idea.
  • Psycho for Hire: It's pretty clear that he is just following Murakami's orders to satisfy his boredom.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Kitazaki tends to act childish and treats his killings like a game.
  • Serial Killer: All Orphnochs working for Smart Brain qualify to a degree, but Kitazaki comes the closest to being the most accurate depiction of one in the series.
  • Shed Armor, Gain Speed: Kitazaki has armored appearance in his Demon-Human mode. Once he sheds his armor into Dragon-Human mode, he gains Super-Speed, enough to even overwhelm Faiz in Axel Form.
  • The Sociopath: What Kusaka has in charisma, Kitazaki has in cruelty. Unlike Kusaka, Kitazaki makes no attempt to hide this, and shows that he's a heartless person even if he's not in battle.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He rarely raises his voice, and it's rare for him not to smile or laugh while killing someone.
  • Stupid Evil: Tries to kill the Orphnoch King, even though doing so would have doomed the entire Orphnoch race, including himself.
  • Teens Are Monsters: The worst Lucky Clover has to offer, and not even an adult.
  • Touch of Death: Even outside of his Orphnoch form, he has the ability to cause organic matter he touches to disintegrate into ash.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • In #40, after barely surviving the fight against Faiz Blaster Form, Kitazaki went on a madness rant and screamed in anger.
    • Kitazaki did not take Saeko and Takuma's betrayal very well, attacking both in retaliation and led to him being barely taken down by Faiz and Delta. Afterwards, Takuma took the opportunity to whip Kitazaki, with Teruo showing up after to chase and petrify a disillusioned Kitazaki.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • At the beginning, he seems to be on the giving end a lot:
      • When he first appears, he's delivering this to almost everyone, including Takuma, which also contributes to the latter's Villain Decay
      • He also gives this a lot to the heroes as Kamen Rider Delta, showing how dangerous the Delta Gear is in the hands of a very competent user. In fact, he seems to be the most capable Delta Gear user in the series proper.
      • When Faiz tries to fight him in Axel Form, he transforms into Dragon-Human mode, and becomes the first opponent to actually overwhelm Faiz in said form.
    • However, as the series progresses, he starts being on the receiving end:
      • The aforementioned Dragon-Human mode that's capable of overwhelming Faiz Axel Form? Hanagata/Goat Orphnoch handles him easily.
      • Once Faiz gains Blaster Form, it's clear that he cannot keep up, starting his Villainous Breakdown.
      • Then there's the Orphnoch King. Already suffering from breakdowns and in complete delusion about being the strongest, Kitazaki tries to avoid this trope by running away from the Orphnoch King. Let's just say that he fails.

    Aki Sawada

Aki Sawada/Spider Orphnoch

Portrayed by: Gō Ayano (live), Naoki Nagase (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aki_sawada.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spider_orphnoch.png
A former member of the Ryusei School who joins Lucky Clover as a replacement member for Mr. J. Also a severe victim of Love Makes You Crazy for Mari.
  • Easily Forgiven: Even after Mari nearly died because of him, she and Takumi still came to check up on Sawada during his final moments.
  • Enigmatic Minion: Seems to have his own agenda apart from the rest of Lucky Clover.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Gives the Delta Belt to the surviving Ryusei students, leading him to be kicked out of Lucky Clover and branded a traitor.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: In love with Mari, but seeks to kill her to destroy what's left of his humanity.
  • The Rival: To Kaixa. Both are in love with Mari, but Sawada seeks to kill her while Kusaka wants to have her all to his own.
  • Sixth Ranger: Joins the Lucky Clover to replace Mr. J.
  • Spiders Are Scary: The Spider Orphnoch.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Mari remembers him as being a kind kid, a start contrast from the cruel assassin he is now.

Other Orphnochs

    The Orphnoch King (MAJOR SPOILERS!)

Teruo Suzuki/Arch Orphnoch

Portrayed by: Kayako Watanabe (child), Shun Kobayashi (shadow), Hiroshi Yanaka (Arch Orphnoch's voice), Jun Watanabe (suit)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/teruo_suzuki.png
WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS
An orphaned boy rescued by Kaido who, unbeknownst to everyone, is the Arch Orphnoch, the most powerful Orphnoch in the series.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: For what is worth, Teruo was once just a normal child who lost his parents, was placed in an institution where other kids bullied him and it's ambiguous if he's aware of being the Arch Orphnoch.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: While it's never commented on by the other characters, in a nod to the franchise's roots, he's themed after a humanoid grasshopper.
  • The Bus Came Back: While the Arch Orphnoch monster suit appears among many a Legion of Doom's forces in plenty of crossovers, he doesn't come back as an actual character after the end of the series until Kamen Rider Outsiders.
  • Creepy Child: When we first meet him, he's not more than an emotionless, anti-social child with no personality. Then we find out he's the Arch Orphnoch, the Final Boss of the series and he starts acting bizarre.
  • Dark Messiah: The literal savior of the Orphnoch race, as only he can correct their genetic instability.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The Orphnoch King is dormant and out of the picture for most of the series, but finding and awakening him is Smart Brain's ultimate goal.
  • Internal Homage: A grasshopper man with a scarf? Hmmmm...
  • The Juggernaut: He proves all but unstoppable once he's fully awakened. It takes Kiba holding him in place to give the Riders a chance to defeat him.
  • Last of His Kind: He's implied to be one of if not the only Orphnochs to survive beyond his series.
  • Literal Split Personality: The Arch Orphnoch operates as a being separate from Teruo who surfaces whenever he wants to kill people, though he always returns to him.
  • Not Quite Dead: Got defeated by both Takumi and Kiba, the latter sacrificed his life as a result. He got gravely wounded and placed under stasis under Smart Brain.
  • One-Winged Angel: As the Arch Orphnoch, he's an overpowered nearly unstoppable nightmare with its host having no proper control and letting the Orphnoch take over.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: His barely-alive body has been kept in stasis by Smart Brain since his defeat at the end of Faiz.
  • True Final Boss: While Murakami and the Lucky Clovers are the main antagonists for most of the series, Teruo's eventual awakening as the Arch Orphnoch makes him the last threat the Riders have to face in the end.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite having appeared in Kamen Rider Outsiders with an updated suit, the Arch Orphnoch is never to be seen in Paradise Regained. While Outsiders is still ongoing at the time of the film's release, his whereabouts remains unknown while Smart Brain began hunting down Orphnochs using androids.

  • Accidental Truth: When Soeno and Sawamura pursues her for the interrogation of Kazuaki's murder, she quickly accuses Kiba of killing him. While it's actually the truth since Kiba does indeed kill Kazuaki in a fit of rage, Chie has no idea about the murder, and only accuses Kiba to save her own skin.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: As she had previously dated him before his accident, Kiba had thought Chie cared for him. Upon being pursued by Soeno and Sawamura for the interrogation, upon seeing Kiba, Chie, out of pressure, then shifted the blame onto him for Kazuaki's murder without realizing that he actually did the deed just to save herself. Then Kiba decided to off her in their next encounter as Chie was about to explain what she did.
  • Killed Off for Real: At the hands of Kiba, though the beginning of episode 3 has Chie swiftly approaching him and Smart Lady before reverting to dust.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Chie's death ended up being a plot point in #16-17 where her brother Yoshimasa tried to find out who murdered her while being unaware that it was Kiba, only for the incident with the Flyingfish Orphnoch result in him becoming the Armadillo Orphnoch, driven by madness into attacking people in an attempt to avenge his sister, which ended up with Takumi breaking out of his Heroic BSoD to become Faiz and protect people.
  • Too Dumb to Live: By throwing her ex under the bus, Chie sealed her own fate as Kiba loses all the fond memories he had with her in his mind and decided to kill her on their next encounter.

  • Dirty Coward: His only priority upon being attacked by Kiba is to run away and let everyone else die to keep Kiba away.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: He is working with Smart Brain, but wants to purge all Orphnochs instead of helping them.
  • Fantastic Racism: Minami is a xenophobic man who despises the Orphnochs simply for not being human. Rivaling even Kusaka in this department.
  • Hate Sink: There is nothing redeemable about Minami, even less than Kusaka; he exists solely to show that Humans Are the Real Monsters.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Far more monstrous and cruel than almost any of the Orphnochs (or even Kusaka) in the setting.
  • Laughing Mad: Spends his last few moments laughing in Kiba's face as he is dying and gloating that the Orphnochs will never succeed.
  • Mad Scientist: Seeks to study the Orphnochs and revert them back to human form.
  • Torture Technician: When he has Yuka captured he tortures her with electric shocks.
