A scientist, university professor at the Kyou'ou Science University and an expert on cryptids (aka Unidentified Mysterious Animals), he investigates areas in Japan where UMA attacks are reported in order to find the truth. He has grayish hair and a scar on the left temple.
  • Absent-Minded Professor: His biggest problem is cutting classes and not giving lectures in his schedule. His assistant calls him out on this.
    Assistant: Banba-sensei, where are you?\\
Banba: Oh... I had a little errand to run.
Assistant: Your students are waiting.
Banba: Why don't you do the lecture for me?
Assistant: You know I can't do that!
  • Achey Scars: Has one on the left temple, which resonates if an area has the presence of a UMA as shown in "Doba".
  • Agent Mulder: Genuinely believes in the existence of UMAs. This is the reason he's an expert on them.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: His reputation as a cryptid expert while being a university professor. He ditches classes if he gets word of a cryptid event.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Wears a black suit and blue necktie, even if he's doing cryptid hunting himself.
  • The Professor: Banba is currently employed by KSU, but he's known to be a genius. Articles in "Doba" showed that he was able to create new drugs to cure untraceable diseases and synthesize cures from creatures. However...

Voiced by: Ryōtarō Okiayu

A scientist who has taken an interest in hunting down UMAs throughout Japan, he is greatly familiar with Professor Banba and his work in investigating and hunting down UMAs.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Banba and the kids in the sewers by leading a HAZMAT team to kill the pursuing UMA with flamethrowers.
    • He also saves a shoplifter and a convenience store employee with the same method.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: A possibility in the show. His actions suggest that he wants to secure the UMAs to make money.
  • Foil: Acts as this to Sousuke. While both men are interested in investigating UMAs, Banba's objective is to figure out the truth why they're attacking civilians while Kimura's objective is to secure them for research and for money.
  • For Science!: The reason why he led a team in the sewers to secure the UMA's remains.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Kimura appears to act as such since he wants the UMAs secured for research. He has nothing against Banba and knows him pretty well.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Like Banba, he also wears a suit and tie. Said clothes happen to be colored white.

    UMA # 1

A UMA sighed by Takeru and his crew on an uninhabited island sealed off by the Japanese government throughout "Doba". Takeru and his crew used its myth to shoot a faux documentary for his online show on the internet. It was responsible for killing Takeru and his crew. The end of "Doba" suggests that it tossed the ruined camera outside the chain link fence surrounding the lake.

  • Expy: Appears to based on Kusshii & Issie, Japanese cryptids which lurks in Lake Kussharo and in Lake Ikeda.
  • Fangs Are Evil: The UMA shows them off to scare the crap out of Takeru before it kills him.
  • Mighty Roar: Gives at least one roar before it attacked Takeru and killed him.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: It has monochromatic white eyes.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Constantly lurks in the forest to sneak up on Takeru and his two-man crew. "Doba" implies that it's the one who hurled Takeru's camera outside the chain link fence as a warning to anyone not to enter the area.

A UMA found by villagers from the sea, it had been responsible for the abduction of a known teenage diver named Minato Haruka. It turns out that the latest UMA is the missing Minato Haruka, who had somehow been turned into the same UMA.

  • Determinator: The UMA found by the villagers was able to escape from the bonfire despite being wounded. The Minato Haruka!UMA also caught Kenta despite him stabbing it to turn him into a UMA.
  • Expy: Appears to be influenced by giant squids that were once believed to be cryptids.
  • Hybrid Monster: The UMA survives by capturing and turning its victims into itself. The process is unknown, but it has something to do with the black liquid Banba is familiar with.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: It lurks in the oceans and captures unsuspecting victims and turns them into its likeness.
  • Together in Death: The UMA found by the villagers is Minato Haruka, which had been turned. And "Return" implies that the Minato Haruka!UMA died with the Kenta!UMA.
  • Walking Spoiler: Talking about this particular UMA would ruin some details about it in relations with the village.
  • Wham Episode: In the middle of "Return", Banba was shown the X-ray of the dead UMA, which had a human skeleton embedded in its body structure.

    UMA # 4
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uma_4.jpg
A UMA found prowling in the sewers of a local town. It had a hand in killing a sewer worker before it was discovered by Banba and Kimura, the latter having its remains and egg secured for research purposes.

  • Expy: Appears to be based on the Beast of Busco, a giant snapping turtle reported to be in existence since 1949.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Has two sets of sharp fangs on the upper and lower parts of its mouth.
  • Kill It with Fire: Seemingly the only way to get rid of it, as demonstrated by Kimura's HAZMAT teams.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: "Double Bow" doesn't offer a lot of details regarding this particular UMA and its existence.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Cute?: The UMA's snapping turtle-like appearance is not cute at all. In fact, the animation work done on the show makes it terrifying and dangerous.

    UMA # 5
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uma_05.jpg
A toad-like UMA that was found in a rural convenience store, it was responsible for killing a person by eating it before Kimura's HAZMAT teams took it out with flamethrowers.

  • Chameleon Camouflage: Has the ability to turn invisible similar to a chameleon.
  • Expy: Appears to be possibly inspired by the Loveland frog, a humanlike cryptid from Ohio in the United States.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Has two sets of very sharp teeth.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Ate a convenience store employee.
  • Kill It with Fire: Another UMA that can be killed with fire, courtesy of Kimura's personal team.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: It has the ability to turn invisible in order to blend in with the surroundings.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: "Strange Color" doesn't offer much details aside from the fact that it can turn invisible.

    UMA # 6
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uma_06.jpg
A UMA found in the South Pole by Professor Banba, it initially attacked a submersible underwater before it was able to escape.

  • Expy: Its design resembles the Gill-Man from the Creature of the Black Lagoon movie. It may also be inspired by ningen, giant aquatic humanoid creatures rumored to live in Antarctic waters.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Its mere presence scares the heck out of the couple in the submersible. Not only that, its long arms was able to grab it within seconds of being in the area.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The submersible's sonar is used to drive the UMA away from it after Banba tells the man to use it at once, saving the couple and the unconscious pilot inside by making it go away.

Click here  to see its entire body (Somewhat).
A UMA discovered by an elementary school teacher and her two students, it has the ability of attacking anything or anyone by tracking down sound vibrations made from the surface. According to "Shin'nen", the UMA appears to be a descendant of the original UMA, which had an angler fish-like appearance.

  • Determinator: Once it finds a target making sounds on the surface, it won't stop until it catches the target or it flees to another area where it cannot go to.
  • Expy: Its design is based from the Graboids in the Tremors franchise.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Takes out chickens in a chicken coop with the sounds it was making from the cages, establishing it to be one of the most dangerous UMAs in Japan.

    UMA # 8
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uma_08.jpg
A UMA that resembles a giant spider. Banba encountered it when a cave-in occurs in a highway tunnel. It appears to be killed when a Sarugaku mercenary fighter jet launches an air strike to destroy the caved tunnel.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: It is a huge giant insect-type UMA.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: It resembles a very big spider, but appears to act like a flea when it used its tongue to suck the nutrients out of its lone prey.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Causes the highway tunnel cave-in by busting into it from out of nowhere, scaring the crap out of the people driving through it. It has the natural ability to be invisible to the naked eye and use it to fool anyone by shaping itself to blend into the landscape. The episode it appeared in implied that part of the highway tunnel collapse was done by illusion to fool Banba to come out of hiding and ambush him.
  • Would Hit a Girl: It did such the life out of a hapless female civilian trapped in her car.
