Jotaro Kujo is the grandson of Joseph Joestar. A perpetually angry youth, Jotaro's first appearance has him sitting in a jail cell which he willingly put himself in to keep the people around him from getting hurt by his Stand, Star Platinum, which he had no clue about, had minimal control over, and believed to be an evil spirit. After Joseph assures him he's not cursed and the Stand is under his control, he is recruited by his grandfather and Muhammad Avdol to search out and kill DIO before the vampire takes over the world.

He next appeared in Diamond is Unbreakable with a degree in marine biology, where he sought out his grandfather's illegitimate son, Josuke Higashikata. He made a few appearances after that but was relegated to a supportive role for most of that adventure.

He sent Koichi Hirose to find Giorno Giovanna in Golden Wind, but aside from that had nothing to do with the plot.

His final appearance was in Stone Ocean with his daughter Jolyne Cujoh, wherein he spent most of the arc in an almost vegetative state brought on by Enrico Pucci's Whitesnake Stand.

His Stand, Star Platinum, is incredibly fast and accurate, to the point of being able to catch a bullet fired 3 inches away from Jotaro's head between his index and thumb. He also has diamond-hard fists, capable of punching through walls and bending steel bars. Later on in the story, it's revealed that Jotaro has the same type of ability as DIO; the ability to stop time. Though unlike DIO, who can maintain it for 10 seconds at his peak, Jotaro can only last 5 seconds at best.

• 11th-Hour Ranger: He spends most of Part 6 in a coma due to Pucci stealing his Stand and Memory discs, and doesn't rejoin the cast until much later as a result.
• 11th-Hour Superpower: Near the end of Part 3, he learns that Star Platinum, like The World, can stop time, hence the name "Star Platinum: The World".
• '90s Anti-Hero: Subverted. He has the appearance and attitude of an anti-hero, but he has high moral standards, and he acts more like a Pragmatic Hero than anything else really.
  Jotaro: Look, no one ever said Jotaro Kujo was a nice guy. I beat the crap out of people, more than I have to. Some are even still in the hospital. I've had idiot teachers who like to talk big, so I taught them a lesson, and they never came back to class. If I go to a restaurant and the food's bad, I make it a policy to stiff 'em with the bill. But, even a bastard like me... can spot true evil when he sees it!
• Absurdly Youthful Father: After twenty-three years and a teenage daughter, Jotaro has apparently managed to age several years in reverse.
• Abusive Offspring: Downplayed and eventually subverted. Initially, Jotaro has no regard for his mother's authority or kindness, and curses at her, among other displays of disrespect. Only occasionally does he show concern for her. The subversion kicks in when Jotaro accepts to go on a journey to save her life, without any hesitation.
• The Ace: Post-part 3. Jotaro is good at anything and everyone views him highly.
• Actor Allusion: In the English dub of the TV anime, Jotaro says "If this were the wild west, the hero would say 'It's high noon'," in his final confrontation with DIO in the last episode. In addition to evoking the spaghetti western heroes that Jotaro was inspired by, this is in turn a reference to Matt Mercer's role as the voice of Cole Cassidy in Overwatch, who was similarly inspired by westerns. In that game, Cassidy says "It's high noon" when preparing his ultimate ability.
• Adaptation Dye-Job:
  • In the anime and manga, Jotaro has teal eyes (depending on whether you're watching Stardust Crusaders or Diamond is Unbreakable). In the live-action adaptation, he has brown eyes.
  • His coat and hat are dark blue in the manga and OVA, with the OVA adding pink elements. They're black in the anime, while his shirt is purple in the manga, red in the OVA or green like in the anime. This only applies to Part 3, as he has a white outfit in pretty much every Part 4 adaptation.
  • Star Platinum has many color schemes: in the manga, it's purple, the OVA and anime add some blue, while Heritage For The Future and All-Star Battle make it green.
• Adaptational Badass: Downplayed in the OVA. Jotaro and Star Platinum are very powerful in most adaptations, but in the OVA, Jotaro is able to fight hand-to-hand with DIO on his own, and Star Platinum even throws the entire minaret tower of a mosque as a thrown projectile. However...
• Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed in the 2000s Adventure OVA's third episode, he's sealed inside and nearly crushed to death inside an improvised steel container, which lets Polnareff's Silver Chariot kill Forever to cement his Heel–Face Turn in the adaptation. Jotaro himself is also noticeably more unnerved by DIO and his Stand in their final battle together, but gradually loses the fear as he gains the upper hand.
• Affectionate Nickname: Whereas Jonathan got the nickname from his father and Joseph gave himself the nickname, Jotaro is called "JoJo" by people in his school who really like him, especially girls who fawn over him. Of the Joestar Group, only Kakyoin refers to him as JoJo.
• All Girls Want Bad Boys: Something he is not happy with.
  Jotaro: Shut up! You're freakin' annoying!
  Girl: He totally talked to me!
• Anime Hair: His hair and his hat seem to seamlessly merge into each other.
• Anti-Hero: In Part 3, which Jotaro himself lampshades. He notes that he's a huge troublemaker for authority figures, stiffs restaurants with the bill if he doesn't like the food, and is generally a complete jerk to everyone (including his family and friends). However, as the man himself notes, "even a bastard like me can spot true evil when he sees it!"
• Anyone Can Die: His death at the end of Stone Ocean serves as a reminder that even an iconic and recurring character like him is not safe.
• Arch-Enemy: DIO Brando, albeit DIO personally considers his archenemy and equal to be Jotaro's ancestor, Jonathan Joestar.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Jotaro has fessed up to putting people in hospitals when he gets into fights, attacking teachers who abuse their power and scaring them into never coming back and skipping out on restaurant bills when he doesn't like the food.
• Artistic Age: Thanks to Araki's evolving art style, Jotaro looks like a 40-year-old man when he's 17, and a 17-year-old man when he's 40.
• Back for the Dead: Gets killed off by Pucci shortly after recovering from his coma.
• Back from the Dead: Is brought back to life (albeit his life alternated to an ambiguous extent) with Pucci's death and DIO's heaven plan undone. He at least implied to have a better relationship with his daughter.
• Badass Adorable: Alessi de-aged him into a seven-year-old, but despite being a child facing an axe-wielding maniac, Jotaro still kicked his ass.
• Badass Biker: A few chapters of part three.
• Badass Boast: DIO gets amused when he sees Jotaro coming up, commenting that after witnessing his power, Jotaro in his right mind should be running away in fear.
  • Jotaro's response? "I won't be able to beat the shit out of you if I don't get close enough."
  • Also this gem:
    Jotaro: You lost for a reason, DIO. One single, simple reason. You really pissed me off.
• Badass Bookworm: Can be seen in his jail cell, in the beginning, trying to study the mystery of his Stand with books subconsciously retrieved by Star Platinum. By the time Part 4 comes in, he is a marine biologist.^note An interest he shares, coincidentally or not, with the late Emperor Hirohito.
• Badass Family: It's rather prominent with him, since he's with his grandfather in Part 3, his grandfather and uncle in Part 4, and his daughter in Part 6.
• Badass in Distress: He spends much of Part 6 comatose, and recovering his Stand and Memory discs is one of Jolyne's main goals.
• Badass Longcoat: In Part 3, it's technically a school outfit, but still looks cool. Revised to a Badass Labcoat of Science and Medicine to go along with his new identity as a renowned marine biologist for part 4.
• Baritone of Strength: He's a muscular and gruff teenager with a lot of strength packed into him. He has a deep, imposing voice to match his attitude
• Battle Aura: In the anime, where it starts out with a purple-colored aura for Part 3 before unexplainably assuming a golden-yellowish color for the fight against DIO. said newfound color maintains its way onto the Part 4 anime.
  • In the live-action Diamond is Unbreakable, movie, Jotaro's aura manifests itself as white wispy smoke.
• Battle Cry: "ORA!"
• Big Brother Mentor: To Josuke (his uncle) and Koichi.
• Big Damn Heroes: In Stone Ocean. After having spent months in a coma, the moment he awakens, he races to Florida's space center to rescue Jolyne from getting shot by Pucci.
• Big Good: Post-Part 3, after he's mellowed out, Jotaro takes the leadership role and serves as a connection to the Speedwagon Foundation on any kind of supernatural or Stand-related incidents, as well as serving as a mentor and behind the scenes force for the heroes of Part 4, 5, and 6.
• Big "SHUT UP!": To his mother at the start of Part 3, as part of his Establishing Character Moment.
• Big Ol' Eyebrows: Initially, like his hat (and his grandfather's), the edges of his eyebrows tend to blend and/or join up with his hair... because that's how big they are. They became less ridiculous in Araki's current artstyle.
• Birthmark of Destiny: The idea that everyone born into the Joestar family has a star-shaped birthmark on the back of their left shoulder was first introduced with Jotaro.
• Blood Knight: He is a calmer version of this but Jotaro himself is shown to be very aggressive due to his many fights he's gotten in and even as a child which may reflect on Star Platinum's attitude and why he's more savagely stronger than most Stands. This and while giving off a crazy little grin whenever he gets to fight showing that Jotaro relishes fighting just as much as his own Stand.
• Book Ends: In both his first and last fights in Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro is initially outmatched until his Unstoppable Rage gives him the resolve to overcome his foe's tactical advantage.
• Boring, but Practical: Most other Stands in the series have some strange gimmick or bizarre capability going for it. Star Platinum's claim to fame? It's a humanoid who's very strong, very fast, and very precise. Besides the curveball Star Finger, there's no more to it, befitting The Comically Serious no-bullshit Jotaro. This doesn't stop it from being widely regarded, in-universe and out, as one of the strongest Stands in Stardust Crusaders, if not the whole series, because it's just that good at what it does. It can overpower and outspeed most other Stands, spot tiny things from miles away, and throw things with pin-point accuracy and bullet-like power. Its only real short-comings are its modest range and its own straight-forwardness, forcing Jotaro to make or wait for an opening when fighting more outlandish Stands before unleashing its ORA rush and ending the fight. Once he has the ability to stop time, this lessens a bit, but even then it's mostly an extension of Star Platinum's extreme speed.
• Breaking Old Trends: Jotaro is the first protagonist in the series whose last name isn't Joestar.
• Breaking the Fourth Wall: When ZZ supposedly burned Jotaro to death, the surviving Jotaro comes out of a hole he safely hid in, and then comments that if he got killed at that point, who would be the main character of the current series?
  • In addition, at least twice in the series, he anticipates opportunities to Quip to Black and instructs his teammates to say something cool before it cuts to commercial.
• Breakout Character: Thanks to a nice combination of epic badassery, charm and cool design, Jotaro has become the most popular Joestar in Japan, and appeared in not one but four arcs of the series (Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable, Golden Wind and Stone Ocean), being a major character in three of the aforementioned four, practically making the overall main protagonist of the series. Seriously, it's up to the point where this guy is one of the first things that comes to mind when thinking of JJBA, and because of his massive popularity and overall appearances, this also overlaps with Wolverine Publicity below.
• Broken Ace: It's learned in Stone Ocean his marriage and family life crashed and burned because of his social inadequacies and two full-time jobs.
• Brought Down to Badass: When he gets de-aged by Alessi, he loses the use of his Stand, since he only obtained this ability recently and didn't have it as a child. But even as a Standless seven-year-old, he's still badass enough to beat the tar out of Alessi with his own two little kid fists.
• Brought to You by the Letter "S": The first and second versions of his Part 4 outfit have "JO" inscribed on his cap, in Part 5, his collar is tipped with golden pieces shaped to resemble the letter J, and in Part 6, two lines of "JO"s start at the shoulder of his sleeves and end at his cuffs.
• But Not Too Foreign: The best example in the series, which is saying something considering how weird the Joestar family tree gets. He's one quarter British and one quarter Italian from his mother's side (all the Joestars up to that point, including Lisa Lisa, were British, and Suzi Q is Italian) and half Japanese from his father's.
• Calling Your Attacks:
  "STAR FINGER!"
  • Jotaro also has an odd, recursive version of this thanks to video game appearances. Normally, when using Star Platinum's Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs, he simply shouts "ORA ORA ORA!. However, games like All-Star Battle have actually dubbed this move "Ora Ora Ora".
• Captain Obvious: Has some moments. From Part 4:
  Jotaro: (stopping in front of a shoe store) This appears to be a shoe store.
• Chained by Fashion: Part of his outfit in Part 3. Mainly his black jacket.
• Character Catchphrase: "Yare yare daze." Means either "Well, well, well," "Good (freakin') grief," or "Give me a break", depending on the context.
  • A literal translation to English is nigh impossible, but it's a combination of an interjection like "oh" or "well" with an expression of disgust or displeasure, like "tsk" or "jeez". "Oh, bother", "For crying out loud" and the aforementioned examples capture the essence pretty well. The phrase is used to express annoyance, exasperation or sometimes mild surprise, and varies based on context and tone.
  • The dub uses "good grief" for the most part, though "good freakin' grief" is used to fit the lip sync if need be. The OVA dub goes with "what a pain."
• Character Development: He's quick to get into a fight in Stardust Crusaders, and is generally reserved, but does come to obviously enjoy the company of his comrades. For reference, note his pained, furious facial expression upon being told Avdol and Iggy have died, compared to how he first felt upon meeting them. By Diamond is Unbreakable, he's wised up significantly, showing a greater amount of patience along with being more social with other people.
• Character Tic: Just before decimating his opponent with Star Platinum, Jotaro is likely to draw his right index finger across the brim of his hat.
• Cheated Angle: A small, subtle case: in the Stardust Crusaders anime, Jotaro's hair has a small loose strand that switches sides depending on where he's turning his head.
• Chekhov's Skill: Star Platinum was mainly used to beat the crap out of anything and anyone with his diamond-hard fists of fury and later to freeze time. In the beginning of Part 3, Star Platinum had the ability to make things appear out of nowhere, and soon Jotaro's once empty jail cell was filled with random items ranging from small furniture, electronics, books, and other things, even a freakin' exercise bike. Many chapters later during his poker game duel against Daniel J. D'Arby, Jotaro used this skill again in order to throw D'arby off, first making a lit cigarette appear in his mouth then a glass of juice on the table, tricking him into thinking he was cheating with his Stand.
• Chick Magnet: Throughout his travels in Part 3, he has women throwing themselves at him left and right. After the party grows a bit, they're usually distracted afterward by Kakyoin or Polnareff.
• Chronic Hero Syndrome: Ironic for someone who initially refused to be part of the quest to stop DIO, Jotaro spends a majority of his life from Part 4 onwards trying to fix every problem he ends up coming across, even if he has nothing to do with it. A flashback from Polnareff reveals that he and Jotaro looked into the market for Stand Arrows and sought to confiscate them from everywhere they had been peddled to, he acts as Joseph's ambassador to inform Josuke that he'll be inheriting part of his fortune, he prolongs his trip to Morioh to erase Kira from the equation, he catches sight of DIO's son in the form of Giorno and immediately sends Koichi as a liaison to investigate him, he partners with the Speedwagon Foundation to break Jolyne out of prison the first chance he gets, and he stays in Florida after the fact to stop Pucci from enacting DIO's master plan.
• Closet Geek: Hardass delinquent he may be, Jotaro's officially listed hobbies skew very nerdy. Not only did he acquire his deductive abilities by obsessively watching Columbo, but he reads technical books about boats and planes for fun, and his favorite movie is a nature film about wolves and caribou. Star Platinum steals an RC car for him, and he reads Shonen Jump He even goes on to become a marine biologist.
• Cold Ham: He manages to chew the scenery while still being stoic as possible.
• The Comically Serious: Some of the funniest moments in the series result from Jotaro's deadpan reactions to the bizarre things happening around him.
• Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Continuing the tradition from Part 2. Both Joseph and Jotaro are muscular heroes who, despite this, use every trick in the book. However, Joseph is more Hot-Blooded and is essentially a Nice Guy while Jotaro is The Stoic who doesn't even bother with niceties.
• Cool Uncle: Inverted and Played With, he's Josuke's cool nephew, but because he is over a decade older, he comes across as this trope.
• Costume Evolution: Starts off with his iconic black Badass Longcoat before changing it into a marine biologist suit for Part 4-5. Then in Stone Ocean, he wears a purple suit that's almost identical to his original longcoat.
• Custom Uniform: Jotaro's school uniform is less a uniform than it is a Badass Longcoat and Signature Headgear ensemble that vaguely resembles one.
• Cute Bruiser: If Holly's memories are to be taken at face value, then Alessi's arc implies this about his younger self. Well-behaved, sweet to his mother, and capable of utterly trouncing a grown man. However, this is quite a big "if".
• Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Jotaro didn't want Jolyne getting mixed up in the supernatural troubles that he's frequently a part of. That and his people skills led to Jolyne resenting him.
• Dark Is Not Evil:
  • His uniform is black in the Stardust Crusaders anime and he has the appearance of a delinquent, but he is actually a good person despite his rough exterior who will move mountains and travel to far off places to protect his loved ones.
  • Jotaro even believed that Star Platinum was an evil spirit because of its dark, menacing appearance, but Star Platinum has helped him fight against other Stand users who use their Stands for more malicious purposes and Star Platinum even has its user’s best interests at heart.
• Deadpan Snarker: A subtler case, but you can detect some sarcasm in a few of his lines, particularly when he's one-upped a villain.
  Jotaro: (to Telence T. D'Arby) If you want to know if we'll forgive you, why don't you read our souls? (Telence does so) NO! NO! NO! NO!
• Death by Irony: The hero who uses a time-stopping Stand is killed when Pucci gains an even stronger time-based ability.
• Death Glare: Jotaro is generally good at hiding his rage, but if you manage to break his stoic demeanor, this◊ is what you'll find staring back at you while Star Platinum mercilessly beats you into the dirt.
• Decon-Recon Switch: Between Stardust Crusaders and Golden Wind, Jotaro's stoicism is never viewed as a bad thing, as it always gives him an advantage in a battle since nobody can read him, and the only person who could be negatively affected by it, Holly, is a Pushover Parent who doesn't see Jotaro's behavior as problematic. In Stone Ocean, however, his stoic nature is finally seen in a problematic light, as it prevented him from properly showing affection towards his daughter, Jolyne, which adversely caused her to see Jotaro as neglectful. By the end of the Part, Jotaro learns to actually be open with his daughter, and directly says to Jolyne that he's always cared about her no matter how closed-off he seemed.
• Defeat Means Friendship: Noriaki Kakyoin. Justified in that he risked his life to remove the mind control bud from Kakyoin's brain after putting him down.
• Demoted to Extra: In Golden Wind, he only has a brief cameo near the beginning of the part and towards the end thanks to a flashback. He becomes more important to the story once more in Stone Ocean.
• Diagonal Cut: In Stone Ocean, Pucci unleashes a Flechette Storm of knives in Jolyne's direction. Jotaro, determined to save his daughter, pushes her out of the way, while leaves him open to an attack from Made In Heaven, who slices his face apart diagonally, killing him on the spot. This also happens to be a Call-Back to Stardust Crusaders, in which Boingo's Thoth predicted that Jotaro would die from his face being torn in half (albeit by a bomb hidden in a tangerine).
• The Dreaded: He was already feared enough in Part 3. And later, everybody metaphorically shits themselves due to his fearsome intellect and mastery of one of the most powerful Stands in the setting. Becomes something of a plot point in Part 4; the main antagonist, after a brief skirmish with Jotaro, dreads running into him so much that the full potential of his Stand was designed around not wanting to encounter him, or so he says.
• Duality Motif: Whenever Jotaro is The Protagonist, he's dressed in black; whenever he's Out of Focus as a side character, he's dressed in white.
• Dying Declaration of Love: When Whitesnake steals his Stand and Memory discs, his last words to his daughter Jolyne before falling into a coma are "I've always cherished you."

• Early Installment Character-Design Difference: In his debut appearance, his hat is smaller, especially the crown section of the hat. It gets increasingly angular as time goes on, which also affected his hairstyle and his hat eventually appears to blend with his hair.
• Empowered Badass Normal: Jotaro Kujo was kicking ass even since he was a young child without a Stand, as Alessi finds out the hard way.
• Enraged by Idiocy: Jotaro is easily annoyed by people doing silly things, especially cracking bad jokes. Joseph is frequently responsible for grinding down his patience for acting so goofy half the time.
• Establishing Character Moment: The moment he discovers his Stand, he decides to stay in jail so he can safely research it in case his power turns out to be too dangerous. This establishes that he's a Badass Bookworm and that he's a good person despite being a delinquent.
• Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas:
  • While not a bad person at all, he's still callous and generally kind of a jerk, but is willing to go to the depths of Cairo to stop DIO from indirectly killing his mother. He does lash out and even insult her because she coddles him like a 5 year old, but he still cares about her.
  • Extends to his grandmother, Suzi Q. When she calls while the crusaders are in a leaking sub, Jotaro calmly makes a point to answer, and to do everything he can to calm her, assuring her that Joseph will be fine because he's with him, and that they will call her back really soon. All this without mentioning that Joseph was just knocked unconscious and that the sub they are in is leaking. Jotaro's interaction with his grandmother is also completely lacking the usual impatience he has for people who get antsy and begin questioning him.
• Everyone Has Standards:
  • Even though he has no qualms beating his enemies senseless, Jotaro seems to draw a line at killing his opponents needlessly. When he comes within moments of attempting to stab Avdol, he stops the second the man turns his back to him.
  • Jotaro casually admits without angst that while he doesn't see himself as a nice guy, even he has lines he won't cross in his first battle with Kakyoin:
    Jotaro: Look. No one ever said Jotaro Kujo was a nice guy. I beat the crap out of people, more than I have to; some of them are still in the hospital. I've had idiot teachers who liked to talk big, so I taught them a lesson... and they never came back to class. If I go to a restaurant and the food's bad, I make it a policy to stiff 'em with the bill. But... even a bastard like me can spot true evil when he sees it! True evil are those who use the weak for their own gain, and crush them with their foot when they're through! Especially an innocent woman! And that is exactly what you've done, isn't it?! And your Stand gets to hide from the victim, the law, and the consequences! That's why... I will judge you myself!
  • He does not hide the fact that he thinks very lowly of Joseph cheating on his wife and having an illegitimate child in Part 4, though he seems to look past it despite the occasional comment.
  • Played for Laughs. In Eyes of Heaven, he calls out Part 2 Joseph for cheating and... crossdressing.
    Jotaro: You cross-dress, and you cheat on your wife. I've really had it with you, old man...
• Experienced Protagonist: By Part 4 through 6, Jotaro has a lot more experience as a Stand User. And that experience also allows him to mentor the rookie Stand users of Morioh.
• Expy: Jotaro's capless◊ scenes◊ are reminiscent of Kenshiro. May be intentional or not, but if it's any help, Araki himself has stated in interviews that he's a North Star fan.
• The Expy With No Name: He is directly inspired by the Man With No Name. A stoic, Terse Talker whose longcoat and school uniform hat bring to mind the Man With No Name's poncho and cowboy hat, and who travels to desert land of Egypt during the course of Stardust Crusaders. Word of God further confirms this by saying that Jotaro's personality is based off of Clint Eastwood and the many Western movie characters he plays. This is slightly referenced in the final battle against DIO at the very end.
• Failed a Spot Check: Interestingly, despite Jotaro's observational skills against enemies, he seems to be ignorant of very clear and obvious signs something is amiss, such as when "Kakyoin" very brazenly acts as suspiciously as possible, Jotaro needs several hints to notice something's off, likewise, he fails to notice Josuke taking a pen from him when controlled by Surface and the subsequent murder attempt, and brushes off the rain sounding like Josuke without attempting to listen for a second more.
• Failure Hero: This ends up being Jotaro's fate in Stone Ocean. In Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro was The Ace who never lost a single battle he took part in, and while he lost a few times in Diamond is Unbreakable, he was still a very successful fighter who ultimately saved the day in the end. In Stone Ocean, however, he's beaten by just a single swipe from Whitesnake while trying to protect Jolyne, leaving him comatose for the majority of the part, and when he returns for the final battle, he pushes Jolyne out of the way of Pucci's Flechette Storm, causing him to unceremoniously die while seeing Jolyne get critically injured, leaving him to die with the knowledge that he couldn't save his daughter, who ends up dying along with him not too long after.
  • On a lighter note, choosing to save his daughter over killing Pucci did end up helping in the long run. Before dying, she injured Pucci in the eye, which helped Emporio trick Pucci into putting Weather Report's Stand disc on his head, ultimately leading to Emporio killing Pucci for good. In a way, one could say that Jotaro, Jolyne, Weather Report and Emporio were the ones who killed Pucci, even if the former three didn't live to see it happen.
• First-Name Basis: Jotaro is almost always referred to by his given name, which is especially notable in Part 3, as all the other members of the Joestar Group (sans Iggy the dog) are referred to by their family names. This also applies in later parts.
• Flower Motifs: An exhibition picture◊ has Jotaro alongside a lone dandelion, which symbolizes sunlight and overcoming obstacles, both of which align with his hero status. It is also a hardy flower which alludes to Jotaro's delinquent background.
• Foil: To Kakyoin, who's much more calm, analytical and kind, while Jotaro is the foul-mouthed bruiser. The JoJonium interviews go into detail that even the way they wear their gakuran is supposed to represent their differences, with Jotaro, the delinquent, having it wide open and accessorized, and Kakyoin, the honour student, having it tidily buttoned up. Their Stands also contrast, with Star Platinum being short-range and Hierophant Green being long-range.
• Former Teen Rebel: By Part 4, Jotaro dropped much of his delinquency, has matured, and become successful marine biologist. He's also a Big Brother Mentor to Josuke and most of his friends in Part 4, and works closely with the Speedwagon Foundation.
• Foreshadowing: Jotaro's hat has an emblem with a "halt" or "stop" hand sign. His Stand shows the ability to stop time at the end of Stardust Crusaders.
• Freudian Slip: During the English dub of his fight against Daniel J. D'Arby, Jotaro accidentally slips up at one point and demands that D'Arby "call his bluff" when he clearly meant "bet." Though, by this point, D'Arby is too busy bugging out from the high stakes of their poker match that he doesn't even notice. Turns out Jotaro was in fact bluffing, and his hand was worthless.
• Friend to All Children: Implied. For a person who is prone to outbursts towards people he doesn't like, Jotaro is shown to be surprisingly patient with children. He dives after Anne to save her from a shark and Dark Blue Moon both times without hesitation, and never yells at her in spite of her disruptive antics. During the Yellow Temperance battle, he promises to buy a boy a new ice cream after taking one from him despite being in the middle of a fight.
• Genius Bruiser: He eventually earns a Ph.D. in marine biology, but even in his later years, he's capable of dishing out a beating.
  • Hell, the guy wrote his dissertation while he was hunting down a Stand using serial killer. He became a doctor on his down time.
• Good is Not Nice: He later becomes kinder, but ultimately he's still a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
• Good Wears White: In Diamond Is Unbreakable, Jotaro has evolved into the Big Good and wears a white variant of his signature outfit.
• Gratuitous English: He drops the occasional Engrish word now and then.
  • Averted in the live-action film, where he speaks fluent English with his grandfather Joseph on the phone. One can infer that Joseph can't speak Japanese.
• Gonk: It's downplayed, but his reset counterpart in the climax of Part 6 is noticeably more...lumpy-looking than usual.
• Greater-Scope Paragon: Jotaro is this in Part 5, as he plays a minor role in this part, while Bruno Bucciarati takes up the Big Good position in Part 5.
• Guile Hero: Big time. Jotaro doesn't defeat the bad guys by beating the shit out of them, he does it by outsmarting them. He beats the shit out of them after they're defeated.
• The Hero: Arguably the most active hero in the canon, alongside Joseph - he plays a significant role in three of the stories.
• Heroic Build: Star Platinum is ripped and built much like Jonathan or Joseph in Part 2, but Jotaro himself downplays by wearing his school uniform jacket as it doesn't show off his impressive physique, unlike grandfather and great-great grandfather who show off their muscular bodies.
• Hidden Depths: Contrary to what one would expect, he is very intelligent despite being a delinquent, though he admits some of his detective skills come from watching a lot of Columbo. When the group meets her, Enya is hesitant to confront him directly because she knows he might be intelligent enough to see through her deceptions.
  • His favorite film is Never Cry Wolf, which speaks volumes about him.
  • David Production is fond of adding little moments like having Jotaro read a Marine Life magazine while waiting for Polnareff's haircut to finish. At least as far the anime is concerned, Jotaro's always been interested in marine life and the sea.
  • Despite acting outwardly as if Holly's goodbye kisses annoy him, the day that she doesn't do so, he immediately takes note and goes to check on her.
• Hoist by His Own Petard: Barely averted, though he mentally acknowledges it wouldn't even be funny if he ends up killing himself from stopping his own heart with Star Platinum in order to sell pretending to be dead to DIO's senses.
• Hot-Blooded: Subverted. Unlike both his grandfather and great-grandfather, but he often shows shades of this when something annoys him greatly and will often let his temper go. He also demonstrates to be passionately driven when as he delivers certain speeches that represent his determined willpower.
• How Do I Shot Web?: When he first gains Star Platinum, he doesn't know what abilities it has and mainly relies on its close-range prowess. When he learns DIO's The World can stop time, he figures out how to do so too.
• Hunk: He's a [JoJo] hero after all. In fact, he gets the most attention from women than any of his relatives because of this.
• Iconic Outfit: Jotaro's chain collared uniform and hat combo. He also retained this style of hat and trench in the next parts.
• Identical Grandson: To Joseph apparently; so much so that Josuke's mother leapt onto Jotaro with a flying embrace, telling him how much she has missed him. Made odd by the fact that while Jotaro does resemble Joseph when he was 20 years old, Old Joseph in Stardust Crusaders (a mere 5 years after he slept with Miss Higashikata) looks nothing like his younger self.
  Jotaro: My apologies, Miss Higashikata. I am Mr. Joestar's grandson.
• I Never Told You My Name: Jotaro does this to expose Enya as a servant of DIO. He had already gotten suspicious of her when she addressed Joseph by name (she quickly claimed she heard Polnareff address Joseph), then was confirmed at how she knew his own name as it was never uttered by any of the rest of the group nor did he tell her. Enya quickly claims she knew Jotaro's name because she saw him sign his name in the guest book. Jotaro would've slightly believed it, if he didn't sign himself in as "Qtaro", thus exposing her lie.
• Innocently Insensitive: He sets off Josuke after telling the latter's admirers to have their stupid talk about hair later, not knowing that talking shit about his hair is an easy way to ask for a beatdown.
• Insistent Appellation: Even upon revealing to him that he's Josuke's older nephew, Josuke insists on referring to Jotaro as Jotaro-san/Mr. Jotaro. Subverted slightly in that while all of Josuke's friends pick up this tic from him, they're not familial with Jotaro like Josuke is, so referring to him formally is more understandable.
• In-Series Nickname: Again, JoJo, this time derived from his name, Jotaro Kujo.
• Internal Homage: Star Platinum looks like an amalgamation of Bruford and the Pillar Men. Additionally, the pattern on his belts is similar to that on Caesar's headband.
• In the End, You Are on Your Own: In the final battle of Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro is the only one left to take on DIO after Kakyoin and Joseph have been killed and Polnareff gets knocked down once his sneak attack on DIO failed.
• Invulnerable Knuckles: Jotaro can deal overwhelming damage to his opponents with his Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs without any drawbacks, but in Diamond is Unbreakable, against damage-resistance Stands like Kira's Sheer Heart Attack shows his fists will start to bleed out after enough hits.
• Japanese Delinquents: Interestingly enough, the only time that he apparently went to prison was when he voluntarily walked into a cell.
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
  • Jotaro initially seems very aloof and self-involved, but it's eventually brought to light that he puts the well-being of others before his own. His journey to Egypt cements him as such.
  • He may seem like a crass, aggressive thug at first glance, but he's ultimately a genuinely kind-hearted man who fights valiantly for his loved ones and innocents, which goes into Gentle Giant territory when he runs into Josuke's mother when looking for him, despite Tomoko confusing him for Joseph and squeals with tears in his arms, the kind of thing that sends him into anger. He instead calmly breaks that he is not Joseph but is here in place of him, and upon leaving, sincerely offers condolences for the trauma she has recently been through.
• Kansas City Shuffle: He pulls one on DIO with, of all things, a couple of small magnets. During a Time Stop, DIO discovers a magnet planted on his bracelets that matches one on Jotaro's cuff buttons. He interprets this as a sign that Jotaro really couldn't move during stopped time and that the movement he saw earlier was just magnetic attraction, so he winds up for a swooping blow... only for Jotaro to very definitely move by punching Star Platinum's fist straight through The World's abdomen. In DIO's words:
  DIO: The magnet wasn't there to make me think he could move... it was there to make me think he couldn't!
• Kick Them While They Are Down: In Stardust Crusaders he admits that he hates to kick someone down on their luck. But for scum like Steely Dan and DIO, he doesn't give a damn about it.
• Labcoat of Science and Medicine: In Parts 4 and 5, he trades out his old school uniform for a long white coat befitting his profession as a marine biologist.
• Large and in Charge: For Part 3, due to being a mix of both The Hero and The Big Guy. He's obviously The Hero, but he's also The Big Guy, standing 6'5 (195 cm) with only Joseph Joestar being just as tall, and the fact that he's the one who relies on his Stand's brute force more than anything else.
• Legacy Character: The last of the Joestars to answer to the nickname JoJo with the abbreviation becoming a Mythology Gag of sorts in later chapters.
• Leitmotif: During the anime, you just know a beatdown is to come when you hear the song "Stardust Crusaders" playing as Steely Dan found out the hard way. He even retains this in Part 4.
• Like Father, Like Son: A tragic example. Jotaro's father has been absent throughout most of his life due to his father's commitment to his job. Jotaro likewise ends up being too caught up in his work in the Speedwagon Foundation that he remained absent throughout Jolyne's life.
• Lotus Position: In Stone Ocean, after receiving his stolen Star Platinum, his unconscious body arose into a stance like an aesthetic monk while still being in deep-sleep as Star Platinum acts as a instinctive defense.
• Ludicrous Mêlée Accuracy: Star Platinum is not only strong and fast, it has the Super-Senses and motor precision to do things like surgically remove a brain-infesting parasite with no medical training, master the timing in a baseball video game in minutes, and stop and start a human heart by hand.
• Lured into a Trap: The incident that got Jolyne sent to Green Dolphin Prison at the start of Stone Ocean was masterminded to lure Jotaro close enough for Enrico Pucci to use his Stand to attack Jotaro at his most vulnerable and steal his memories containing the details of DIO's Evil Plan.
• Made of Iron: He sometimes sustains heavy damage in his battles against evil Stand users such as DIO or Kira (DIO stabbed him with multiple knives, broke his bones and punched him across a city with The World before trying to slam a road roller on him; granted none of the injuries were fatal because he had stuffed magazines under his clothes and timely summoned Star Platinum within his body to absorb some of the shock from impacting the pavement at high speeds like an artillery shell, but still. As for Kira, he blew Jotaro up with Sheer Heart Attack, causing him multiple injuries, Kira himself remarking he could almost see through the holes in Jotaro's body). Despite that, he has been able to keep on fighting.
• Meaningful Name: Jotaro's name written in kanji is 承太郎. The last two characters 太郎 (Taro) represent a generic first name, but the first one 承 means "to inherit", befitting the original title of Stardust Crusaders as "Heritage for the Future" and representative of his being the latest in the Joestar lineage to take the fight to Dio Brando.
• Mr. Fanservice: Downplayed, but he is considered very good-looking; to boot, after he comes out from under the ground to avoid being burned to death by Wheel of Fortune, we're treated to the sight of him in a tank top, showing off his beefy arms.
• Mum Looks Like a Sister: Or rather, Dad Looks Like A Brother. By the time of Stone Ocean, he looks a couple of years older than Jolyne at most, despite the 21 year age gap. Thanks to the changing art style between parts, he appears to age backwards, looking older at 17 than he does at 29, and older at 29 than he does at 42. This is largely averted in the anime for Stone Ocean; while he's still aged very well, he does appear distinctively older and more seasoned than both Jolyne and his previous selves.

• Nerves of Steel:
  • Jotaro is convinced that everyone can read his motives like a book, so he never bothers to display much emotion or explain himself.
  • He's able to bluff Daniel J. D'Arby into folding a game of poker for the souls of himself and everyone he loves through his sheer confidence, when Daniel had the entire adventuring-party dead to all rights holding Four Kings while JoJo didn't even have a hand period. Though he does admit after the fact that if he had bothered to glance at his hand and realized how shit it was, it would have been a lot harder for him to keep the bluff going since he'd know for sure how bad things would get if he screwed this up.
• No Celebrities Were Harmed: His design and moves have a bit of a Michael Jackson influence to it. Word of God says he's also based on Clint Eastwood. In Part 4, he also bears some resemblence to Humphrey Bogart.
• No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: He killed DIO to rescue his mother from dying, but this would lead to his own death at the hands of Pucci, DIO's best friend.
• Nominal Hero: Has shades of it early on, where he's given something of a foul-mouthed, misogynistic streak. It's pretty much forgotten after the first few episodes, but was an unusual aspect of his character nonetheless.
• Non-Indicative Name: There's Magician Red, Silver Chariot, Hierophant Green, Hermit Purple, in every media, Star Platinum has been coloured green, blue and even purple! Not a single trace of being colored silver or white, although the wispy white aura his Stand gives off in the live-action film might be a way of explaining his Stand's name.
• No Social Skills: Even after he stops swearing at people, he has trouble picking up social cues and understanding what he's supposed to do in social interaction. Koichi comments that attempting small talk with Jotaro is even more uncomfortable than hanging out with Rohan.
• Not So Stoic:
  • He freaks out when his mother tries to get out of bed after she's affected by DIO's curse and laughs with Kakyoin and Polnareff when they find out Arabia Fats's weakness. Later, he gets furious when he sees Joseph killed in front of him, and when DIO drains his blood.
  • The Part 3 finale where Jotaro is just as tearful as his companions when they have to say goodbye.
  • The face he pulls when Jolyne is wounded before his eyes in the fight against Johngalli A. could best be described as pure homicidal rage. Yes, even Jotaro can be a Papa Wolf.
  • When he sees Pucci launch a Flechette Storm in Jolyne's direction, Jotaro screams at the top of his lungs in abject terror, when few things have been shown to scare him before.
• Oh, Crap!: Noticing that Pucci can see inside his stopped time is shown to visibly disconcert him.
• Older and Wiser: When he returns in Diamond is Unbreakable, he's more level-headed and less explosive than during his younger days.
• Older Than They Look: He appears to get younger later in the series for Part 4, Part 5, and the Part 6 manga, in spite of having a teenage daughter, thanks in part to Araki's Art Evolution. Having the power of a Stand slows aging and apparently makes you younger in Jotaro's case.
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
  • If Jotaro stops caring about looking "cool" during a fight (e.g. losing The Stoic attitude and his one-liners), it probably means his opponent has REALLY pissed him off and he's done holding back for the sake of style. For example, towards the end of Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro has an uncharacteristic moment of It's Personal right before he prepares to make his opponent a Man on Fire:
    "You know, normally, I hate to kick a guy when he's down on his luck, but with you, I don't give a damn. You killed my friends and countless innocent bystanders, so don't expect any mercy."
  • Even in the direst situations, Jotaro manages to maintain a serious face, even when Joseph is killed by DIO in Part 3; the only time he's seen in total despair is during his battle with Pucci, when he notices Pucci had attacked Jolyne with several knives in the same way DIO had done several years ago to him. He screams while realizing he won't be able to both defeat him and save her during the Time Stop.
  • Played for laughs (or Played for Drama, depending on how you look at it) when he battles Yoshikage Kira in Diamond is Unbreakable. His Big Brother Mentor characterization completely disappears and he returns to his Stardust Crusaders love of cheesy quips and adjusting his hat before beating down his opponents. It's Bathos, but if you interpret the scene's parallels with DIO^note blond-haired villain who just gave Jotaro's green school-uniform-wearing friend a Torso with a View, counting down his remaining seconds and calling something "useless" as the cause, Jotaro's regression starts to take on a much darker meaning.
    Jotaro: Nice watch. Go ahead and take one last look at it, because I'm about to bust it up. To be clear: by it, I mean your face.
    Jotaro: Good freaking grief. I take it back... Up close, that watch is tacky as hell. Although, to be fair, I'd say that's the least of your worries now. There's something that's going to look a lot worse than that piece of junk... And that, my friend, is your putrid face.
  • In the OVA adaptation of Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro keeps a — mostly — cool head on the surface throughout, so him being visibly frightened by DIO and The World in their final fight speaks volumes for how dire a threat the evil duo pose.
• Papa Wolf: One of the few times his stoicism breaks and he shows any emotion is when his daughter is attacked. He also tried to keep her away from the insanity that is the Joestar lifestyle at the cost of their relationship. He also treats his younger comrades as such, including his own uncle who's younger than him. Tragically, this is used against him in Stone Ocean as Pucci no less than twice uses Jotaro's love for his daughter into a Sadistic Choice of protecting his daughter or defeating the enemy, and both times Jotaro chooses Jolyne. This leads to his coma, and then his death.
• Pay Evil unto Evil: Jotaro has no pity for evildoers and mercilessly pummels anyone he deems as deserving it, regardless of their current condition.
• Perpetual Frowner: He has two main settings: impassive and angry.
• Playing Possum: In his battle with DIO, Jotaro plays dead to get DIO close enough to deliver a critical blow, having to resort to using Star Platinum to temporarily stop his heart knowing how incredibly risky it is.
• Power Degeneration: Time stopping proves to have this effect. Due to not finding a reason to use the ability for an entire decade after his climatic battle with DIO, it's like a muscle, and lack of use has led it to weaken significantly. This is why he goes from a mere half second in Diamond Is Unbreakable at the beginning of the part to two seconds from using it more frequently.. By the time of Stone Ocean, he had just gotten out of a coma and Star Platinum's durability sank from a perfect "A" rank down to the minimum "E" rank.
• Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: One of the few cracks in his extremely stoic personality is his love of delivering hammy and downright cheesy one-liners to people he's intent on beating up. Because of this, some fans have guessed that the reason he's so silent is due to thinking up new one-liners all the time.
• The Promise: When Steely Dan takes Joseph hostage with his Stand, preventing Jotaro from attacking him. Steely Dan takes horrible advantage of this by abusing and humiliating Jotaro, knowing he can't attack him since he'd injure Joseph in the process. Jotaro promises that once Kakyoin and Polnareff rid Joseph of the Lovers Stand, he will beat the shit out of Dan for all the crap he pulled. Jotaro even went as far as to record every offense Dan inflicted upon him in order to pay him back. Once Steely Dan gets incapacitated, Jotaro delivers on his promise that he'd pay, with interest, and pummels him to death via Star Platinum's Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs.
• Purple Is the New Black: His outfit in Stone Ocean consists of a purple longcoat and purple hat.
• Rage Breaking Point: DIO, we know you were desperate, but you really shouldn't have drained Joseph.
• Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: His iconic move with Star Platinum.
  "ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA!!!!"
• Reincarnation:
  • In the OVA, Jotaro is implied to be a reincarnated Jonathan.
  • Jotaro's post-Pucci Stone Ocean reincarnation is mentioned, but never seen. While only mentioned once or twice in interviews and the manga itself, he is implied to be more fatherly, understanding, and generally just a much less flawed person after being "reincarnated" by Made in Heaven's snapback.
• Real Men Hate Affection: Deconstructed in Stone Ocean. It shows that if you persist on being an emotionally-lacking fencepost who doesn't smile, cry, hug your children, and tell them that you love them, they will grow up to HATE you. In other words, emotionless and cynical '90s Anti-Heroes grow up to be loser-fathers if they remain emotionless and cynical '90s Anti-Heroes into adulthood.
• Refusal of the Call: In the first episode of the anime, Joseph tries to recruit Jotaro to fight against DIO. Jotaro's reaction to the story pretty much sold it, especially when he found out that his own mother was ill.
  Jotaro: What do you want me to say? "Okay, gramps, let's go find this DIO!" Who would believe such an absurd story?!
• Ret-Gone: Twice over in Stone Ocean. The first time occurs when he's killed by having his face sliced open by Pucci's Flechette Storm, causing a duplicate to take his place in the new universe. Then, once Emporio causes the snapback by killing Pucci, another Jotaro is mentioned in the old universe, implied to have a better relationship with Irene than the original did with Jolyne, though because he's never shown on-screen, it's unknown how much of his original memories or personality are actually retained.

• Say My Name: In the anime, Jotaro manages to utter Jolyne's name right before he falls over dead from having his face cut open.
• School Uniforms are the New Black:
  • Lampshaded when asked why he and Kakyoin are still wearing theirs on a road trip to Egypt:
    Jotaro: We're students, so we should look like students.
  • It comes up again shortly after the heroes defeat ZZ. Jotaro had sacrificed his jacket to make ZZ think an attack had succeeded. As they're headed through Pakistan, Joseph expresses amazement that Jotaro was able to get a Japanese student jacket there. Jotaro simply replies, "100% sheep wool" - he had one woven.
• Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The rough and edgy Manly Man to Kakyoin's polite and artistic Sensitive Guy.
• Series Mascot: Out of all the JoJos, he has the most appearances, having appeared in every part since his introduction, he's usually in a major supporting role. America-wise, he's the first character that is brought up when people think of the series and is recognized by most fans as the absolute most badass protagonist of the series.
• Shared Family Quirks: Jotaro's stoicism, and ability to bluff enemies with his extreme poker face, and his penchant for cigarettes, calls to mind his great-grandmother Lisa Lisa. Like her, he also pushed his child away from him at an early age for fear of drawing them into his dangerous life, only for them to come back into it anyway. Also like her, when a close loved one dies, George II for Lisa Lisa, Joseph for Jotaro, instead of showing fear or crying, they rush ahead immediately to avenge their murder.
• Sherlock Scan: Showing that the hyper-awareness isn't limited to his Stand, he shows this in Part 4, making a series of accurate guesses (age range, height, income, profession type, being unmarried) about Kira just from the jacket he saw hanging on a coat rack.
• Showy Invincible Hero: He is rarely hurt seriously in most of his battles and tends to have the most stylish or impressive finishers.
• Signature Headgear: Although just a school boy's cap, Jotaro's fashioned a few charms to it. However, the main reason why it's cool is because of how it's missing the back. Then again, over the course of the series, the exact place the hat ends and hair begins becomes so blurred, it eventually becomes a part of his head.
  • Exaggerated in the anime adaptation, where it almost seems to be literally that. Not only Jotaro doesn't lose his hat while he was drowning in a whirlpool, he later congratulates N'Doul for managing to knock it off with a claw made of water, even Lampshading the previous run-in with water.
    • When he recovers his hat after his battle with N'Doul, we can see that only the rearmost part of the hat is actually ripped off, making this property all the stranger.
    • Araki himself said in an interview that Jotaro's hat is a part of himself, which is why he never intentionally takes it off. It also makes him easy to recognize even when viewed from behind.
• Signature Sound Effect: Two for Star Platinum. When he simply closes his fist, the sound of a pretty nasty punch plays. When he's actually beating the shit out of you, it sounds like automatic shotgun fire.
• Sir Swears-a-Lot: Does not exactly have the cleanest mouth in his teen years — not even his own mother is safe.
  Joseph: (furiously) HEY! How dare you address your mother that way?! And what kind of language is that?! And stop smiling, Holly! You'll only encourage it!
• Small Parent, Huge Child: At 17, Jotaro is built like a bodybuilder and positively dwarfs his mother Holly.
• Smoking Is Cool: Cool enough to drive an opponent into insanity, even. Later on, however, he's no longer shown smoking, so he probably quit.
• So Proud of You: During the final fight in Part 4 against Kira that had the tables turned around thanks to Koichi, he comments that he grew so much since he had first met him.
• Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The first JoJo people think about in this series is Jotaro. Especially so in America, as Part 3 and the Capcom game based on it were the only things from the series officially translated into English for a long time.
• Static Character: Downplayed, as Jotaro does develop, it is not within the context of Part 3 itself, but rather the subsequent parts he's in, such as Part 4 and 6, but even then, his character remains static rather than dynamic.
• The Stoic:
  • He doesn't think showing emotions is necessary because he assumes people can tell what he feels by looking at him. Understandably, this causes misunderstandings with people, including with his own daughter, who assumed he didn't care about her.
  • When playing an incredibly high stakes poker game, his opponent, a skilled gambler and cheater, is completely unable to get a bead on Jotaro's poker face, which just so happens to be his default expression that he wears all day.
• Strong and Skilled: He's exceptionally clever, has one of the strongest, fastest Stands in the series, and can manifest it within his own body to give himself Super-Strength, Super-Toughness, and Master of Your Domain abilities. He can be thought of as a combination of the previous JoJos: whereas Jonathan was clever in his own right, he mainly powered through his fights and Joseph tended to win through strategy more than power, Jotaro finishes his fights by first outsmarting his opponents, then hauling out Star Platinum to deliver a beating. While Stands with A-rank in both power and speed become more common later in the series, Star Platinum is one of the few with A-rank in precision too, making the Stand a lot more versatile than it looks even before it can stop time.
• Superior Successor: Jonathan tried, and failed, to end DIO's evil. Joseph barely managed to inconvenience DIO. Jotaro, however, finished his ancestor's work.
• Talk to the Fist: Jotaro uses Star Platinum to do this on defeated mooks begging for mercy, but the most notable was against Alessi. After de-aging Jotaro into a kid, Alessi began taunting how he's now a helpless child since he doesn't have Star Platinum before coming in for what he thought would be an easy kill. Cue kid Jotaro punching a surprised Alessi in the face hard enough to knock out a tooth.
• Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Being a 6'5'' muscle-bound hunk with raven hair and a massive Chick Magnet, this is part and parcel.
• Tarot Motifs: The Star card has many positive connotations associated with heroism, such as hope, good omens, and peace after the storm. This tells the audience that despite Jotaro's angry outward appearance, he is still the virtuous hero of the story. Also, Jotaro is the "star" of Stardust Crusaders.
• Tearful Smile: Of all people, Jotaro smiles with tears in his eyes along side both Joseph and Polnareff as the three embrace and share a heartfelt goodbye at the airport in the finale of Part 3.
• There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Star Platinum is so powerful that a dozen or so blows from it is enough to make an enemy go down for the count. Jotaro never throws anything less than hundreds of blows.
• Too Many Belts: Downplayed. Each of his outfits up to Stone Ocean wears two belts.
• Trademark Favorite Food: According to official materials, his mother's cooking. Not that he'll admit it.
• Tranquil Fury: This is his defining character trait in Part 3. Underneath his near permanent stoic exterior, Jotaro is very easily pissed off. DIO's assassins constantly trying to kill him and his allies doesn't help much in this department. During his battle with DIO, Jotaro often monologued about how pissed off he was and even credits his victory to that, yet the entire time he looked fairly cold and calculated as usual, to the point he lets the battle end in a honourable Quick Draw. Even when he mellows out in Part 4, he falls back into this several times, most famously during his beatdown of Kira after Killer Queen almost blew him to pieces and punched a hole in Koichi's chest. Jotaro may have a cold front, but he is burning with white hot rage underneath.
• Triple Shifter: Not only is Jotaro a research professor, he's also heavily involved with the Speedwagon Foundation's work and investigations. His family life has suffered for it.
• Took a Level in Kindness: Jotaro softens up considerably by the time the Egypt arc starts, but he’s still very much the Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Diamond is Unbreakable shows him with much improved anger management skills, such as praising Koichi for holding down the fort, and not flying into a rage with Tomoko Higashikata when she mistakes him for Joseph and starts hugging him and nuzzling his chest; both of which being things that really would have set him off back in the days of Stardust Crusaders. Golden Wind features him being reasonable with Koichi's claims that Giorno wasn't a threat, despite Jotaro having clear concerns about what the spawn of DIO might do.
• Traveling at the Speed of Plot: In Stone Ocean, he was able to make it from a Speedwagon Foundation facility to Florida's space center after regaining consciousness. He arrived in time to save Jolyne from Pucci after utilizing a harpoon fired combined with Ermes' stickers.
• Undignified Death: Just barely averted. He nearly ends up killing himself by stopping his heart to fool DIO into believing he really was dead. Jotaro lampshades it, acknowledging that if he died from his own stunt that it wouldn't even be funny.
• Unskilled, but Strong: Most enemy Stands have some special power that ends up being the basis of their users' fighting styles. Jotaro, however, never discovers Star Platinum's until the end, and, until then, relies on Star Platinum's ability to punch really hard, really fast when he needs to fight. Subverted aside from his Stand abilities, though, as he just as aptly employs tactics and strategy to defeat his opponents.
• Unstoppable Rage: After drinking Joseph's blood, DIO essentially was unbeatable... Or rather, he would have been, if this hadn't been Jotaro's final straw. Up until that point in the fight, Star Platinum had demonstrated that in a head-on clash, The World's fists would begin to break against its own. At the battle's end, Jotaro's at the point where he can barely focus any longer, and looses a final blow with such incredible force that it puts fissures in his own fist, but ruptures The World and causes it to explode.
• Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Reading the contents of DIO's diary before destroying it leads to most of the conflict in Part 6, as Pucci targets Jotaro to steal his memories and learn of its contents. This ultimately leads to the deaths of most of the cast, himself included, and the entire universe being remade, when Pucci uses the Heaven plan contained within the diary to evolve his Stand.
• Used to Be a Sweet Kid:
  • Or so Holly would like to think. She seems to be viewing memories of her son's childhood through rose-colored glasses. However, when Alessi de-aged him to about seven years old, Jotaro was still capable of seriously pounding him, and still had his not-accepting-any-nonsense mentality. Which, given the way Sethan works, means he must have had these traits when he was a little kid. It's possible that he was always a mix of sweet and uncompromising, and the "uncompromising" part just worked its way to prominence without Holly taking notice of it. Either that or Holly is simply in denial or a big case of being an Open-Minded Parent.
  • We see pictures of a younger Jotaro smiling next to his mother, which lends support to the theory that this trope is played straight. Considering that we don't know the role Sadao played in Jotaro's childhood and prominent theories that he's a When You Coming Home, Dad?, a lot of fans like to connect the dots and say Jotaro grew up pissed off at his dad for being absent all the time and it drove him to delinquency.
  • If Suzi Q's words are anything to go off of, Jotaro's delinquent behavior is relatively recent (as in from the last time she and Joseph were able to visit him and his mother to the events of Stardust Crusaders), and she believes that deep down, he is still a sweet child who cares for his family above everything else.
• Villain Killer: Of the Big Bad variety: Jotaro killed DIO, finished off Kira, and even Pucci with Made In Heaven would've fallen to him had he not thrown knives towards Jolyne.
• Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Compare him with his mom and especially his grandfather. Inverted when it comes to his daughter, that being said.
• Weirdness Magnet: On top of being subject to the "Stand users attract other Stand users" rule, Jotaro also painted a bullseye on himself when he killed a highly charismatic vampire with many devoted followers. This eventually became enough of an issue that he divorced from his wife.
• When You Coming Home, Dad?: His own father wasn't around often, due to being a jazz musician that was frequently on tour. Not that he seems to resent him for this, but he clearly didn't understand most people need a dad while growing up. This affects his and Jolyne's relationship in Stone Ocean, as he just sort of assumed that his daughter would inherently know that his almost constant absence was to keep her and her mother out of the Stand-related trouble he regularly dealt with.
• Wolverine Publicity: Oh, hell yes. Given his Breakout Character infamy, in any material that covers multiple stories of the series, he is given top billing as the JoJo.
• Worthy Opponent: Out of DIO's followers, the only ones Jotaro ended up gaining the most respect for as worthy adversaries were N'Doul and Daniel J. D'Arby.
• Would Hit a Girl: Jotaro badmouthing almost every woman who tries to talk to him is one thing, but he's also shown to not hesitate in beating them up if necessary, such as shoving two plane stewardesses out of the way, breaking all of Midler's teeth through High Priestess, socking Nukesaku's human disguise in the face, and even punching Jolyne, his own daughter. (Though, with the latter two, he saw right through Nukesaku's disguise and needed a way to get him and Jolyne out of the visitor's room)
• You Can't Fight Fate: During the Egypt Arc in Stardust Crusaders, Boingo makes a prediction using Thoth that Jotaro would die by having his face split in two. However, Oingo is seemingly the true victim of Thoth's prediction whilst disguised as Jotaro. Then as shown later on in Diamond is Unbreakable (due to Bites the Dust) and Stone Ocean, Jotaro dies with the same split in his face from Thoth's initial prediction, meaning that Jotaro was always destined to die that way, it just took longer than Boingo expected.
• You Don't Look Like You: In the prequel OVAs made in 2000. Seriously, if it weren't for his outfit, Jotaro would look like a completely different character◊.
• You Won't Like Me When I'm Angry: Holy shit. Most people would be wise not to do anything to piss him off.
• Younger Than They Look: He doesn't look at all 17 in Part 3, and could easily be mistaken for a grizzled army general in his 40s. This makes his appearance in the original manga for Part 6 ironic, as he does actually look like as old as he should have been in Part 3.
  • In sharp contrast to his anime/manga appearances in Part 4, where he looks younger than he does in Part 3, in he live-action movie he is played by the then 41-year-old Yusuke Iseya, and definitely looks the part, despite being canonically only 29.

The first Stand seen in the entire series, and one of the most powerful. Named after the Star card of the tarot, Star Platinum is a short-ranged Stand with extreme precision, speed and strength. Very few foes can dodge its near light-speed punches or endure its fearsome Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs, earning it a reputation as the greatest of all Stands. Upon its sudden awakening, Jotaro came to believe he was possessed by an evil spirit and surrendered himself to local jail before his grandfather taught him about Stands. Although it is not known to be a sentient Stand, Star Platinum will occasionally be subconsciously activated to keep Jotaro safe.

Eventually, Jotaro also discovers that Star Platinum has an additional ability, allowing it to briefly freeze time. This ability has been dubbed "Star Platinum: The World".

• The Ace: Widely considered among the best Stands around, to the point many antagonists from Part 3 and Part 4 are afraid to go near Jotaro due to Star Platinum. Kira outright states that he created Bites the Dust so he wouldn't run into Jotaro and Akira stated that he didn't want to deal with Jotaro's ability to stop time as it would make Star Platinum more than a match for Red Hot Chili Pepper. It's very telling that the only Stands in the original universe that have feats surpassing it were born out of extremely miraculous means, such as Golden Experience Requiem and Made In Heaven.
• Adaptation Personality Change: A downplayed example, considering that it is not a sentient Stand, but in the manga, it shows a wide variety of expressions, including evil smiles. In the anime, Star Platinum is portrayed mostly as serious just as its user besides the occasional Slasher Smile Played for Laughs.
• Awesomeness by Analysis: It can make a perfect photocopy of a microscopically sized fly in a photograph, that no other Stand or technology could find. That plus the fact that it was able to find said fly within all the ambient darkness in the first place.
• Barbarian Long Hair: Star Platinum has it, more noticeably in the OVAs.
• Blood Knight: It seems to be this, keeping an emotionless face, but when he's punching the daylights out of something, his expression shows he is having an absolute blast. This is mostly in the manga, whereas in the anime, he continues to show no clear emotion. Though if his Slasher Smile before beating the daylights out of Steely Dan and Alessi is any indication, he's just hiding it more than his manga counterpart.
• Boring, but Practical: In a series full of Stands that can shoot fire, shoot water-propelled emeralds, and so on, for the most part, Star Platinum's schtick is that it can punch really hard, really fast. That said, it can punch really hard, really fast using fists as strong as diamonds. Gets more awesomeness later on, when Jotaro discovers that he, like DIO, can stop time. Star Platinum also has good precision, which helped remove a flesh bud from Kakyoin and Polnareff, something that Joseph and Avdol previously thought was impossible, and has incredibly good eyesight which is a boon in long-range encounters or helping to figure out where DIO was hiding out.
• Bullet Catch: It has such lighting-fast reflexes that it can catch a bullet fired at point-blank range. This is shown early when Jotaro, to prove his claim of having an evil spirit inside of him and not yet aware that it's his Stand, tries to shoot himself in the head with a stolen gun and is saved in exactly this fashion.
• Close-Range Combatant: Its major real weakness is that despite its strength, it's a short-range Stand that can only move 2 meters away from Jotaro before it rapidly starts losing power. A lot of enemies fighting Star Platinum resort to either attacking at range and/or restricting Jotaro's movement so he can't close the distance. While Jotaro learns a few techniques like Star Finger and time stop to alleviate the range disadvantage, he never manages to fully resolve his vulnerability to ranged attackers.
• The Dreaded: Not for no reason do most villains in Stardust Crusaders and especially Diamond is Unbreakable fear a direct confrontation with Star Platinum so much that they do everything they can to actively avoid it; it's one of the most powerful Stands around, with a lot of strengths and no actual weaknesses to speak of aside from its short range, which is further compounded by the fact that its Stand user is a Badass Normal with a sharp cunning mind, a coldly pragmatic approach to combat, and lots of experience.
• Extendable Arms: One of its earlier abilities is Star Finger, where Jotaro focuses all his power into Star Platinum's hand to extend its fingers.
• Fighting Spirit: Star Platinum, or at least its arm, the first Stand shown in the series. It goes on to act as the representative of Stands as a whole in the franchise.
• Flight: By virtue of being a ghostly entity, it is capable of floating around and even flying in the air with impunity.
• Flying Brick: It passively hovers in midair, and has superhuman speed, strength, durability, senses, and breathing power and capacity.
• Good Counterpart: To DIO's The World. Same abilities, but Star Platinum is the emotional Stand of a hero, The World is the near-emotionless Stand of a villain. This reflects on how Jotaro is actually a caring and emotional man under his stoic exterior while DIO is The Sociopath under a charismatic veneer, unable to truly love and empathize.
• Heroic Build: It is ripped, and he has the strength to prove it. Even throughout Araki's Art Evolution when his drawings had his characters become progressively skinnier, Star Platinum managed to stay ripped.
• How the Mighty Have Fallen: To a lesser extent than Joseph Joestar. While it is considered The Ace in Stardust Crusaders and Diamond is Unbreakable, by Stone Ocean, Jotaro's age made it generally weaker, with its Persistence dropping from A to E.
• Improbable Aiming Skills: With its superhuman eyesight, Jotaro can make some really good long distance throws.
• In a Single Bound: Star Platinum himself can more or less fly, but like other Stand users, Jotaro can only channel his strength in bursts that allow him to leap.
• "Instant Death" Radius: Star Platinum's speed, strength, and precision means that Jotaro tends to instantly win fights with a single punch as soon as an enemy comes within its range.
• Intangibility: It is usually a ghostly presence, but can be become rock solid whenever Jotaro feels like it. It's not really useful for anything other than making him portable, until Jotaro is able to channel Star Platinum within his body. At which point, Jotaro can use it to manipulate his insides or to defend from internal damage.
• Kiai: "ORA ORA ORA ORA!"
• Large Ham: In stark constrast to Jotaro.
• Lightning Bruiser: It hits really hard, can take as much as it dishes out, and is among the fastest Stands in the series even without factoring in the Time-Stop ability.
• Logical Weakness:
  • It is so absurdly powerful that Hirohiko Araki has gone on record saying that Star Platinum is essentially the strongest Stand is unbeatable one-on-one. However, just as Jotaro was able to defeat the supposedly invincible The World with his own time-stopping power, Araki notes that it is theoretically possible for Jotaro to also be defeated by a comparable time-manipulating power, suggesting that it may manifest in one of his descendants. This statement would be proven true as he ends up being defeated by a Stand that functions near identically but in reverse: Star Platinum is so fast that it can overwhelm and halt time whereas Made in Heaven uses gravity to accelerate time so that it functionally stops time in its user's perspective.
  • Downplayed against Pucci using C-Moon. While Pucci is still immobile and largely defenseless against Jotaro's actions, gravity and time are very closely correlated, and Pucci's control over gravity would enable him to move, if only barely, and react to what happens during that stopped time.
  • As powerful as Star Platinum is, it's not Automatic and has a very limited range. Typically when Jotaro takes a beating, it's because he didn't expect what he was up against like DIO, or because the enemy significantly out-ranges Star Platinum even with his Time Stop in mind, like Bug Eaten.
• Magic Skirt: Star Platinum's loincloth never reveals anything, no matter how fast it moves.
• Megaton Punch: While it usually relies on Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs, it's capable of single strong punches as well. At one point, it punches a hole through The World, a Stand with a similar level of durability.
• Necessary Drawback: After Stardust Crusaders, Star Platinum's main power had to be toned down as it would otherwise close the distance against other Stands with relative ease and crush its opponents with its A-tier speed and strength. In Diamond is Unbreakable, Star Platinum's time stop was cut down to a second in duration. Stone Ocean restores the time stop's limit back to five seconds but prevents Star Platinum from spamming said ability.
• New Powers as the Plot Demands: Star Platinum gets new abilities out of absolutely nowhere. It's established as fairly straight forward yet powerful stand that is both highly durable, quick, and very strong. Then against Captain Tennille it is shown that it can extend its body parts at will, specifically the fingers. Later, suddenly gets a Vacuum Mouth to defeat Justice and then gains the ability to stop time against DIO.
• No Indoor Voice: Even for a Stand, he still manages to be extremely loud while shouting out his Kiai. It's a miracle on how any of his voice actors, somehow managed to not damage his vocal chords while voicing him.
• Personality Powers:
  • Star Platinum's extreme strength is matched by its extreme precision. While Jotaro may be a brusque man with an unshakeable resolve, he is unfailingly gentle with those he perceives to be innocent and unable to defend themselves.
  • On a more general level, Star Platinum is represents Jotaro's repressed emotions. Jotaro is said to be very passionate despite his stony facade, but almost never displays his feelings visibly. Star Platinum is effectively a physical embodiment of those emotions shown as a large, barbarian-looking warrior that expresses itself with loud cries. If an enemy angers Jotaro enough, he'll be standing there with his usual stern expression as Star Platinum savagely beats them within an inch of their lives while screaming at the top of its lungs.
• Power Echoes: In the anime, its voice is dipped in a rich reverb/delay to give it an ethereal feel.
• Purple Is Powerful: Although the coloring is inconsistent, certain depictions of Star Platinum, such as in the anime and manga, have lots of purple in its color scheme. Fitting enough for what is possibly the most powerful of all Stands through conventional means.
• Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Its definite and iconic way of finishing off villains.
  "ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAAAAAAAAAA!!!"
• Reflexive Response: At the beginning of Stardust Crusaders, before Jotaro fully controlled it, it instinctively defended Jotaro from a gang of delinquents and brought him various stuff while he kept himself in a cell. It would later continue as this in Stone Ocean, defending Jotaro's unconscious body after returning to him.
• Roar Before Beating: Its Kiai doubles as this; it'll shout ORA! to psych itself up for a beatdown or when throwing the first punch.
• Skyward Scream: Star Platinum surely isn't averse to it.
• Slasher Smile: Displays an impressive example◊ before he beats up Alessi.
• Super-Reflexes: In its debut, it showed itself to be capable of catching a bullet that was fired from a gun at merely a few centimeters away from Jotaro's head. It is neither an automatic Stand nor a sentient one, and at that point Jotaro was not consciously controlling it like an experienced Stand User would, therefore it was operating solely on raw reaction speed to active threats rather than anticipated ones. It continued to demonstrate similarly prodigious reflexes in later battles with other Stand users.
• Super-Senses: It has really good eyesight, so much that it can spot a minuscule fly in a photograph despite it being practically invisible to the naked human eye not only due to its nigh-microscopic size in the image, but also the atrocious lighting conditions of the environment it was photographed in.
• Super-Speed: Can move almost instantaneously; for instance, he can retrieve items fast enough to make it seem like they teleported into Jotaro's hand to the naked eye which is part of his Batman Gambit bluff to make Daniel J. D'Arby believe he successfully cheated the poker game and can match Silver Chariot strike-for-strike. According to its Stone Ocean profile, Star Platinum moves faster than light.
• Super-Strength: It destroyed High Priestess's teeth, which were said to be as hard as diamonds, and, in the OVA, lifted and threw a small building after ripping it off the tower it was standing on. It's worth noting that although diamond is exceptionally hard, it's also relatively brittle, making the feat less impressive than it sounds on paper.
• Super-Toughness: Its strength allows it to withstand incredible force from enemy attacks, making it a very terrifying Stand to face. Also, Jotaro is eventually able to activate Star Platinum inside of him, which gives him a generous buffer against damage. The same effect is otherwise achieved by reflexively summoning the Stand right between him and whatever is about to hit him.
• Tarot Motifs: The Star, which symbolises renewed hope and a blessing of luck from the universe. Fittingly, the reveal Star Platinum can Move in the Frozen Time is what lets Jotaro start turning the seemingly hopeless battle against DIO in his favour.
• Time Stands Still: While fighting DIO in the final arc of Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro discovers that Star Platinum has the power to stop time for a few seconds, just like DIO's Stand, The World.
• Vacuum Mouth: In order to defeat Justice, the seemingly invincible Stand of Enya the Hag, Star Platinum inhales in huge amounts of air in the process of literally vacuuming Justice into its lungs and then trapping it there. As Justice had been practically filling the entire room, that amounts to a volume of air far above the ability of a human to inhale, implying SP's lungs (or its analogue for such) have an unambiguously superhuman capacity for compressing inhaled air.
• Victorious Roar: When Star Platinum punched out N'Doul, it bellowed out at the top of its lungs in a Skyward Scream.
• Vocal Evolution: Daisuke Ono's original voice for Star Platinum in All-Star Battle had a slightly deeper and more subdued pitch than his anime version, where it's more like he's yelling in his lowest pitch and sounds more like Jotaro.
• When All You Have Is a Hammer…: Star Platinum is very durable, can be channeled within and around Jotaro for protection, and is otherwise just a Lightning Bruiser with limited range and no other abilities until he learns to stop time. Applying Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs tactically is the key to his success in his final battle of Part 3 against DIO.

  • In Diamond is Unbreakable, in spite of commencing three consecutive Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs, one set being more than enough to defeat an enemy in Stardust Crusaders, it is unable to significantly damage Sheer Heart Attack, causing Koichi to evolve his Stand in order to defeat the Sub-Stand in a more unconventional manner.
• Worf Had the Flu:
  • In Diamond is Unbreakable, Star Platinum could only maintain Time Stop for only two seconds instead of the normal five, due to Jotaro's lack of usage of it over the years. This prevents the Time Stop from being too much of a Story-Breaker Power. He regains its maximum time limit by the end of Stone Ocean when it achieves its full potential.
  • It's implied that in addition to being older in Stone Ocean, Jotaro's recent recovery from being comatose for almost the entirety of the part and only recently being able to move again, caused Star Platinum's durability to take a significant drop from A to E, due to not being at full health.
• World's Best Warrior: Throughout Part 3 and even after, Star Platinum is considered by various enemies to be an incredibly dangerous stand that only a fool would take head on. In fact, most antagonists do whatever they can to eliminate direct threats without ever having to confront the terrifying strength of Star Platinum directly.
• World's Strongest Man: Star Platinum is reputed to be one of the strongest Stands around, and that's without taking its Time Stop into account. Only DIO, Josuke, Okuyasu, Akira Otoishi, Bruno Bucciarati, Ermes Costello and Diavolo have Stands that can match it in pure physical strength. And only four individuals, being Giorno, Pucci, Johnny Joestar, and JoJolion's Josuke Higashikata, have Stands with feats that make Star Platinum inferior, having achieved them through miraculous and convoluted means.
