    Young Planes

Jay Jay

Voiced by: Mary Kay Bergman (TLC era); Debi Derryberry (PBS Kids era and website; as "Dee Dee Green"); Donna Cherry ("Jay Jay's Mysteries")

The 6-year old, titular jet plane; Jay Jay is the main character who loves flying and having fun with his friends.

  • Art Evolution: Jay Jay has had two different paint jobs: In the TLC era, he was dark colored and had metallic highlights; in the PBS Kids era, his paint got lighter with no highlights.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Jay Jay is blue, which shows he's friendly, outgoing and adventurous. This also lampshades he's the main protagonist.
  • Cheerful Child
  • Child Prodigy: Is learning so many things as a child.
  • Color Motif: Naturally, Jay Jay's blue paint job hints he loves flying.
  • Curtains Match the Window: In a way, his eye color and paint colors match.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He is this to Snuffy in "Upside Down Waterfall".
  • Heroic BSoD: Has a rather huge sad moment in "Catch The Buzz" when he jumps the gun and thinks Big Jake no longer likes him.
  • "I Am Great!" Song: "I'm a Speedy Guy" from "Jay Jay's Speedy Delivery".
  • Innocent Blue Eyes
  • "I Want" Song: "A Special Something" from "Something Special".
  • The Leader: He acts as this to the young planes.
  • Meaningful Name: Jay Jay's name comes from that of a blue jay, indicating he loves to fly like one.
  • Odd Name Out: Jay Jay's name is the only one that doesn't have a long e sound for the second syllable.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: When voiced by Derryberry, Jay Jay's singing voice is a bit more strained than his speaking voice. But when Bergman voices him, it altered constantly; sometimes it's a bit more strained and higher pitched, sometimes it's less strained without the rasp, and sometimes it's a little lower pitched, but still gains the rasp.
  • Super-Speed: Tries at this in "Super Sonic Jay Jay", but ends up flying uncontrollably.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Jay Jay's voice gained a slight rasp when Bergman voiced him, but gets a higher-pitched voice without the rasp when Derryberry voiced him.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: He's learning so much despite being only 6 years old.
  • Youthful Freckles

Voiced by: Gina Ribisi (TLC era); Sandy Fox (PBS Kids era and website)

  • The Baby of the Bunch: Is the youngest of the gang, even stated to be a very little plane by Big Jake.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Implied to be the case as he suffers from hay fever. He sounds stuffed up and sniffles every now and then, with an implied never ending cold.
  • Meaningful Name: He is named "Snuffy" because of his nasal sounding voice. As well, as his sniffles every now and then. He sounds like he has a never ending cold.
  • Shrinking Violet: He is this around visitors, most notably Grumpy O'Malley when first meeting him.
  • Temporarily a Villain: In "Three Little Planes", he plays the Big Bad Plane, the Big Bad of the titular story.

  • Affectionate Nickname: He is often called "Herk" by his friends.
  • I Can't Dance: "Herky Jerky" reveals that he never learned to dance like the others, but he learns how to with help from the lightning bugs.
  • Leitmotif: Most of the background music that plays whenever Herky is seen is accompanied with a xylophone.
  • Midair Bobbing: He does this all the time, hence being a helicopter.
