    Sombra
"You're under the impression that I care."

  • Aloof Ally: Sombra started off as this towards Cadance.
  • Anti-Hero: Sombra is a self-serving individual, to say the least. When he does work with anyone or do anything that is decidedly good, either it is because it aligns with his interests or for the sake of someone he cares about.
  • Angst Nuke: He has multiple moments of this, most notably in Chapter 15 of Tomb of Magic.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Much of how Sombra evaluates situations, others, and investigates the world around him cements this as a frequent trope for him.
  • Badass Bookworm: Sombra is a scholar, avid reader, and can absolutely destroy you.
  • Berserk Button: Sombra has a whole keyboard of these.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: of the You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry! sort.
  • Born as an Adult: Sort of. Sombra was created from [[spoilerdark magic and first manifested at fourteen years old, but grew from there]].
  • Born of Magic: Like all demons, Sombra was born from dark magic.
  • The Charmer: He can be incredibly charismatic insincerely and earnestly, despite all his moodiness.
  • Crossdresser: Sombra is comfortable in clothing for both males and females, as well as makeup.
  • Cuddle Bug: with Luna.It gets to the point where he has many adorable moments with her, and takes comfort in affection.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Sombra may not be the King of the Crystal Empire, but he is the king of this.
  • Did You Think I Can't Feel?: He is most certainly an incredibly emotional individual, but is widely despised and thought as heartless. This is reputation he resents and he repeatedly asks this of others.
  • Dispense with the Pleasantries: He finds them obnoxious.
  • The Drifter: This is how he lives most of his life between Crystalline: Her Destiny and before he marries Luna.
  • The Dreaded: He is by far one of the most dangerous characters, and is widely feared by multiple countries for centuries. He becomes even more frightening/dangerous as a god.
  • Drowning Their Sorrows: Sombra used to do this in the Crystal Empire, leading him to become an Addled Addict. He's much better now, though these years didn't leave him unscathed.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: He is usually alone out of choice and a general dislike of ponies. There's also a literal example Sombra does not like to eat around other ponies.
  • Exact Words: He often speaks this way, and uses it as a methods to trick others with honesty.
  • Friendless Background: Sombra's early life circumstances prevented him from making any friends. He wasn't very interested in friends before Cadance either.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He initially comes across as having one, and though that's not quite the case, he's still capable of flying into murderous outbursts very quickly.
  • HappilyMarried: To Luna.
  • Healing Factor: Averted. As a demon, Sombra has none and has to make do with many injuries because he has no ability to heal himself.
  • The Hermit
  • Hidden Depths: Sombra has this in spades.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: If you didn't pick up on it in the first four stories, Favorable Alignment will smack you over the head with this. Another example would be that despite being an omnivore, he refuses to eat meat, finding it both repulsive and because he doesn't want to harm other creatures by hunting and eating them.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: Sombra is brutally honest, incredibly intelligent, and mentally unstable. This was bound to happen, not that he really minds.
  • InterspeciesRomance: Luna is an Alicorn and Sombra is a demon.
  • I'm Not Here to Make Friends: He is nicer and somewhat playful to Cadance as time goes on, but he still values a significant other more than her and tells her this. He does not actively seek friendships or appear to want more than he already has, though he has no problems with having and hanging out with friends.
  • It's All About Me: Self-motivated, self-confident, self-sufficient, and mostly self-centered behavior makes Sombra qualify for this. He's a big drama queen bursting with arrogance and self-love and easily ranks himself above everpony around him with little to no exception. Oh, and he also admits to being physically and romantically attracted to himself on top of it all.
  • I Work Alone: Sombra does not like company if said company isn't Luna.
  • Jerkass Victim: He may have a cruel streak, but nothing that happened to Sombra should have.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Personal beliefs, past traumas, and more have made Sombra staunchly one of these.
  • Lovable Rogue: He's a quirky, adventure-loving, charming fellow... who just might murder you if you irritate him enough!
  • Magnificent Bastard: His many clever and devious schemes and general quirkiness warrant this, and doubly so because of his general disregard for common morality. As both the king of the Crystal Empire, and semi-antagonistic figure in general he maintains the status, as well as that of a Manipulative Bastard.
  • Secret Legacy: Sombra is the product of an eldritch spell book that was instrumental in ending the world.
  • Scary Teeth: Many ponies are scared of Sombra's fangs, and even he dislikes them.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: He's not an actual veteran, but Sombra was a living weapon used to further a genocidal agenda while being trapped in an abusive (though non-romantic/sexual) relationship with his summoner and went through varying degrees of Mind Rape on a daily basis. It's a miracle he can function at all.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Luna is the only one who Sombra has really loved and felt any kind of attraction towards.
  • Smug Snake: This is especially true in his colder moments, but there is a softer, more teasing side to this part of him.
  • Stepford Snarker: He uses this to disguise just how much things can hurt him, and has rare moments of self-deprecation when he's upset when this will be played straight.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Sombra certainly thinks he is. He isn't always wrong about it, either.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Above the height of a pony, gray in color, and is unabling to refrain from sassing pretty much anyone. Yep, Sombra's this.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He adores pizza, especially if there's pineapple on it.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Later stories show that because Sombra is a genderless demon and doesn't understand gender norms, he likes to crossdress. He's also convinced he'll look good in anything.
  • Younger Than They Look: Banishment and divinity have set this in stone. The latter stopped Sombra from aging past twenty-four.Though, Sombra is really over one thousand years old in Arc One.

    Luna
"I promise I will be here for you. Asleep or awake; night or day; mirth or misery, and much more. I'm not going to abandon you to your panic."

  • Action Girl: Luna is this in spades. She's willing to go on far-flung adventures across the globe simply because no one else will. She's also a powerful magic user that has mastered weaponry and has her own armory.
  • Adaptational Badass: Even as a filly, Luna was already fighting dragons with broken swords in a post-apocalyptic world.
  • Anti-Hero: Luna is by no means a traditional hero, but still seeks to do what is just, even if it breaks a few rules.
  • Berserk Button: Don't mess with her family, her spouse, or harm children. She will end you.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Luna is a very playful and mischievous. When her happiness fades, be prepared to face a wrathful goddess.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Two words: Nightmare Moon.
  • Break the Cutie: Her fall to becoming Nightmare Moon was this. She's still pretty cute in the present and has rebounded from this considerably. Having an emotionally abusive sister, living through terrible periods of history, and cruel caretaker in name only took a toll on what was once a very happy, introverted, and imaginative filly.
  • Chaste Hero: Luna is a rare female example for most of Favorable Alignment's first few chapters, and still has difficulty understanding love even while in a budding relationship. She does have shades of Celibate Hero too.
  • The Dreaded: As Nightmare Moon.
  • Happily Married: By Enemy of Mine, Luna is married to Sombra and delighted to be his wife, even if it is a struggle.
  • The Hermit: Luna loves solitude and the thought of adventuring on her own, and is the introvert to Celestia's extrovert. Even as a filly, she wanted to wander off into the world and live on her own.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Luna is capable of great compassion, wisdom, and love. She only shows this to a few ponies and comes across as aloof to most others. Getting to know her reveals that she is a very imaginative and adventure-loving mare that wants to share a journey with somepony.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: Luna is a very charming, but quiet and clever mare. Ponies tend to ignore and underestimate her because of her more eccentric habits. In ancient times, she was shunned for her connection with the night and being thought of as a monster.
  • I'm Not Here to Make Friends: Luna is very asocial and not very interested in making friends, but delights in the ones she does have. This worries Celestia considerably.
  • I Work Alone: Luna is a kinder example of this. While asocial and not fond of ponies, she doesn't hate them. Instead, she just wants to accomplish things by herself, especially since ponies can still annoy her very easily.
  • Lady of War: Luna is indirectly shown to be this. She helped lead the war against Discord, and before that was a child soldier. She also spied in the Crystal Empire before it vanished.
  • Morality Chain: To Sombra, who she helps with his struggles, traumas, and calming his temper.
  • Scary Teeth: Luna can magic some into existence from her time as Nightmare Moon, though they aren't as notable as Sombra's.
  • Secret Legacy: Luna is the last Alicorn to be born before the Collapse of the Old World.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Averted. Luna fought the war against Discord and before that was made to fight in wars between the pony Tribes for Starswirl's profit when she was only a teen. She came out of this surprisingly well.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Luna is only (romantically) attracted to Sombra.
  • Stepford Smiler: Averted. Luna is prone to hiding her problems and bottling up her feelings in both these stories and the show itself, but she never hides them with a smile.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: To her average subject, Luna is asocial and eccentric and doesn't seem to really care for them. To Sombra, Cadance, and ponies who need help, she's warm, funny, thoughtful, and extremely loving. Her 'ice' is to non-friends and family, but she's playful and sugary when you get to know her.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Butterscotch and pineapple.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Early in Favorable Alignment Luna couldn't recognize Sombra's interactions with her as romantic desire and assumed he hated her.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Luna is a very hopeful and creative mare who has been through a lot and still sees wonder in the world. She is willing to give most other characters at least one chance.
